  • A's rout Astros, move into first-place tie
    August 18, 2018

OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) Trevor Cahill pitched one-hit ball for seven shutout innings and the Oakland Athletics, far behind in the AL West standings earlier this summer, tied Houston for the division lead by beating the Astros 7-1 Saturday.

Khris Davis, Matt Olson, Josh Phegley and Stephen Piscotty each hit two of Oakland's team record-tying eight doubles as the A's won for the sixth time in seven games. The Athletics trailed the defending World Series champion Astros by 11 1/2 games on June 24 and were still 10 out on July 10.

Houston has lost seven of eight and dropped 12 of 19 since owning a six-game lead on July 24. The next day, reigning AL MVP Jose Altuve went on the disabled list, and the star second baseman is still out.

Cahill (5-2) struck out seven, walked one and retired 14 straight batters during one stretch.

Tony Kemp homered in the ninth for Houston's only other hit. Dallas Keuchel (9-10) gave up five runs in 5 2/3 innings.

    ROCKIES 5, BRAVES 3, 10 INNINGS

ATLANTA (AP) - Colorado struck for three runs with two outs in the ninth inning, and then DJ LeMahieu homered over the center field wall in the 10th to help beat Atlanta.

Fill-in closer A.J. Minter came in with a 3-0 lead to begin the ninth and retired the first two Colorado batters. But the Rockies followed with four straight hits off him, including a two-run double by Ian Desmond and a tying single by pinch-hitter Gerardo Parra.

LeMahieu hit his 10th homer with one out in the 10th off Luke Jackson (1-1). Carlos Gonzalez followed with a double and scored on Nolan Arenado's single.

The Braves stranded a runner at third base in the ninth when Adam Ottavino (5-2) struck out Dansby Swanson to end the inning. Wade Davis pitched the 10th for his 34th save.

The Rockies have won the first three games of the four-game series to stay close to NL West-leading Arizona. The NL East-leading Braves remained one-half game ahead of second-place Philadelphia.

    YANKEES 11, BLUE JAYS 6

NEW YORK (AP) - Giancarlo Stanton hit one of New York's four homers, and Luis Severino struck out eight while pitching into the sixth inning.

Didi Gregorius, Miguel Andujar and Greg Bird also connected as New York moved 31 games over .500, matching a season high. Andujar had three hits and three RBIs, and Gregorius also drove in three runs.

Toronto has lost three straight and four of six. Billy McKinney, who came over when the Blue Jays traded J.A. Happ to the Yankees last month, had two hits and two RBIs against his former team, but Sean Reid-Foley (0-2) was hit hard in his second major league start.

Severino (16-6) won for just the second time in his last seven starts. The All-Star right-hander allowed two runs and six hits in five-plus innings.

    CARDINALS 7, BREWERS 2

ST. LOUIS (AP) - Marcell Ozuna homered, Miles Mikolas tossed six effective innings and St. Louis beat Milwaukee to slide into position for the second NL wild card.

St. Louis moved a half-game ahead of Milwaukee and within four of the first-place Chicago Cubs in the NL Central.

The Cardinals, who are a half-game behind wild card-leading Philadelphia, have won 10 of their last 11 and captured their seventh straight series after winning the opener of the three-game set on Friday.

Travis Shaw and Christian Yelich homered for the Brewers, who have lost six of eight.

Ozuna hit his 15th homer of the season in the second off Wade Miley (2-2).

Mikolas (13-3) gave up one run on five hits. He struck out seven and did not walk a batter in winning his fifth consecutive decision.

    METS 3, PHILLIES 1

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Mets ace Jacob deGrom pitched his first complete game of the season and lowered his major league-leading ERA to 1.71.

DeGrom (8-7) allowed only an unearned run, the result of his own error. He struck out nine and walked none.

It appeared that deGrom's day might be cut short due to a 41-minute rain delay that began in the middle of the fourth. But the right-hander came back after the stoppage as strong as before it.

Philadelphia's Jake Arrieta (9-8) allowed one run and four hits in six strong innings.

Rhys Hoskins and Maikel Franco each doubled among their two hits for the Phillies, who began the day a half-game behind Atlanta in the NL East and leading the NL wild-card race.

    RED SOX 5, RAYS 2

BOSTON (AP) - David Price pitched seven solid innings, J.D. Martinez hit his major league-leading 38th homer, and Boston jumped to a quick lead to beat Tampa Bay for its 17th victory in 20 games.

Mitch Moreland added an RBI double during Boston's four-run first inning. The Red Sox improved to a season-high 52 games over .500 and maintained their 10+-game lead over the second-place New York Yankees in the AL East.

C.J. Cron hit a two-run homer for the Rays.

Price (13-6) gave up two runs on five hits, striking out eight, walking two and hitting a batter. He is 3-0 with a 1.35 ERA in his five starts since the All-Star break.

Tyler Glasnow (0-1), making his fourth start since being acquired from Pittsburgh at the non-waiver trading deadline, gave up five runs, four earned, and three hits. He walked three and struck out four in 6 2/3 innings.

Craig Kimbrel got the final three outs for his 37th save.

    MARLINS 7, NATIONALS 5, 10 INNINGS

WASHINGTON (AP) - Isaac Galloway hit a two-run single in the 10th inning, JT Riddle homered and drove in four runs and Miami beat Washington.

The Nationals intentionally walked Riddle to load the bases with two outs in the 10th. Galloway delivered with a hit to center off Koda Glover (0-2).

Both teams scored in the ninth. Riddle's drive into the right-field stands off Nationals reliever Justin Miller put Miami up 5-4. Washington's Adam Eaton tied it with a homer off Drew Steckenrider leading off the bottom of the inning.

Trea Turner homered and drove in three runs for the Nationals.

Steckenrider (4-2) blew the save but finished the ninth to pick up the win. Brett Graves recorded the final three outs for his first career save.

    ORIOLES 4, INDIANS 2

CLEVELAND (AP) - Alex Cobb pitched a five-hitter for his first complete game in five years, and Baltimore snapped Cleveland's six-game win streak.

Cobb (4-15), the major league leader in losses, struck out three and walked one in his fourth career complete game. The right-hander threw 100 pitches, 69 for strikes, while going the distance for the first time since Aug. 31, 2013, for Tampa Bay against Oakland.

Jonathan Villar hit a three-run homer in the third for Baltimore. Rookie Cedric Mullins hit his first major league home run in the eighth.

Cleveland right-hander Adam Plutko (4-3) allowed three hits in seven innings. He was called up from Triple-A Columbus to step into the rotation for Trevor Bauer, who is out with a stress fracture in his right leg.

The Indians retired Hall of Famer Jim Thome's No. 25 before the game, drawing a crowd of 35,003 for Cleveland's eighth sellout of the season.

    PIRATES 3, CUBS 1

PITTSBURGH (AP) - Joe Musgrove cruised through seven innings, and Pittsburgh beat Chicago to snap a five-game skid.

Musgrove (5-7) allowed one run on five hits with seven strikeouts. He has gone seven innings and surrendered two runs or fewer in four of his past five starts.

Pittsburgh won for the second time in eight games. The first-place Cubs had their three-game winning streak snapped.

Felipe Vazquez retired the side in order with two strikeouts in the ninth inning for his 27th save.

The Pirates' three runs came in the second inning, when Adam Frazier had an RBI double off Tyler Chatwood (4-6) after Josh Bell and Francisco Cervelli walked to start the inning. That ended Pittsburgh's streak of 24 innings without a run scored.

    PADRES 7, DIAMONDBACKS 6

SAN DIEGO (AP) - Christian Villanueva had a walk-off pinch-hit single in the ninth inning, and San Diego beat Arizona to end a five-game skid.

Travis Jankowski led off the ninth with a walk against Andrew Chafin (1-4) and advanced to second on a groundout by Eric Hosmer.

Villanueva hit for Craig Stammen (6-2) and drove a 2-2 pitch into left field to score Jankowski and give San Diego its first win against Arizona at Petco Park this season. Stammen worked two scoreless innings.

Paul Goldschmidt had four hits and drove in four runs while tying a Diamondbacks record by reaching base safely in nine straight plate appearances. Goldschmidt also extended his hitting streak to 11 games.

The Diamondbacks' three-game winning streak ended, and their NL West lead over the Colorado Rockies fell to one-half game.

    REDS 7, GIANTS 1

CINCINNATI (AP) - Matt Harvey took a no-hit try into the sixth inning, Jose Peraza and Dilson Herrera backed him with home runs and the Cincinnati dominated Madison Bumgarner and San Francisco.

Scooter Gennett had three hits for the second straight night and scored three runs, Peraza had two hits and scored twice and Brandon Dixon drove in two runs with a bases-loaded double. Cincinnati sent the Giants to their third straight loss after winning three in a row.

Harvey (6-7) didn't give up a hit until there were two outs in the sixth, when Joe Panik beat out a grounder that shortstop Peraza backhanded deep in the hole.

Harvey threw 6 1/3 shutout innings, allowing four hits and a walk with five strikeouts.

Bumgarner (4-5) turned in the worst of his 14 starts this season, setting season highs by allowing six runs and eight hits in six innings.

    ROYALS 3, WHITE SOX 1

CHICAGO (AP) - Alex Gordon homered, Jorge Bonifacio had a go-ahead RBI single in the decisive sixth inning, and Kansas City rallied past Chicago.

Rookie Brad Keller pitched five solid innings for the Royals, who won for the third time in their past nine games. The White Sox had their win streak stopped at three.

Nicky Delmonico homered in the second inning off Keller (6-5), driving a changeup over the right-center field fence. That was the only blemish against Keller, who allowed seven hits, struck out five and walked none.

Dylan Covey (4-10) returned to the form he had displayed the first 2+ months of the season but remained winless in five starts since July 21. The right-hander allowed two runs on four hits and three walks in 5 2/3 innings.

Five Royals relievers combined for four scoreless innings. The last, Wily Peralta, worked a perfect ninth for his eighth save in as many tries.

    TIGERS 7, TWINS 5

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) - Mikie Mahtook hit a tiebreaking three-run homer in the fifth inning, rookie Ryan Carpenter earned his first big league win and Detroit beat Minnesota.

Joe Mauer, Tyler Austin, Miguel Sano and Mitch Garver homered for the Twins, who had won four straight.

Mahtook's homer was his second of the year and came off reliever Tyler Duffey (1-2).

Carpenter (1-1) was making just his fifth major league start and first since May 31. The Twins had him on the ropes early, as the first three batters reached base, but Carpenter limited the damage and survived to pitch into the sixth.

Four relievers combined to close it out, with Shane Greene picking up the last four outs for his 26th save in 29 chances.

      • Sunday’s six-pack

        — Red Sox put Chris Sale (shoulder) back on the DL

        — A’s 7, Astros 1— These teams are tied for first in the AL West.

        — Denver punter Shane Tripucka is the nephew of former NBA star Kelly Tripucka.

        — Rockies 5, Braves 3 (10)— Atlanta led 3-0 in 9th inning.

        — High school football started in Las Vegas this week; has to be damn hot playing ball in the desert, in August.

        — Golfer Kevin Stadler broke his club in anger Saturday; the head of the club hit a fan, who needed six stitches. Whoops.

        Quote of the Day
“Hell, I’d have done the same damn thing if any of my coaches had done something. … My first reaction would have been: ‘Well, shoot, we’ve done something wrong, but we can’t make it right by letting the whole damned world know about it.’”
Former Ohio State football coach Woody Hayes, in 1976, talking about Richard Nixon, of all people

        Sunday’s quiz
When the Chargers started play in the AFL in 1960, what city did they call home?

        Saturday’s quiz
Phillies manager Gabe Kapler retired from playing in 2006, managed a minor league team in 2007, then un-retired and played for Milwaukee in 2008.

        Friday’s quiz
Besides Bill Belichick (18 years), Marvin Lewis of the Bengals is the NFL head coach who has been in his job the longest- this will be his 16th season in Cincinnati.

        *****************************

Sunday’s List of 13: Nobody asked me, but……

        13) I asked a few days ago why Ohio State never got rid of this assistant coach Zach Smith, despite multiple off-field screw-ups. Now I kind of know.

Turns out Smith is the grandson of former Ohio State coach Earle Bruce, the coach who succeeded the legendary Woody Hayes as Buckeyes’ coach.

Urban Meyer once called Bruce “his second father”; Smith was considered a good recruiter but not much of a football tactician/teacher.

Meyer tried to give an old friend’s grandson the benefit of the doubt, and the guy badly abused the privilege. Now it is a mess, but not many coaches with a 73-8 record get fired.

        12) It is unclear whether Eagles’ QB Carson Wentz will be available for Philly’s season opener against the Falcons. Super Bowl hero Nick Foles hurt his shoulder when he was sacked in the game Thursday night, which leaves open the possibility that Nate Sudfeld could be the #1 QB for the Iggles when they open this season in 19 days.

        11) Giants’ pitcher Dereck Rodriguez, who has been doing great for the last month, went on the DL with hamstring issues; he tweaked his hamstring jumping over the dugout fence to get on the field during the Nick Hundley/Yasiel Puig incident the other night.

        Not good.

        10) Bills’ QB AJ McCarron broke his collarbone Friday night, basically handing the starting job to rookie Josh Allen.

        9) I know it is preseason, but Chiefs’ QB Patrick Mahomes threw a TD pass to Tyreek Hill Friday night that traveled 68.6 yards in the air, longer than any TD thrown in any game all of last season.

        8) Friday night, Daniel Zamora became the 54th player to play for the Mets this season, tying their all-time franchise record for most players used in a season. Zamora was brought up from AA Binghamton, which is unusual.

        7) A reminder that in 1972, Steve Carlton went 27-10 pitching for a Phillies team that went 59-97. One of the greatest seasons ever for a pitcher.

        6) Another reminder: actor/pro wrestler Dwayne (The Rock) Johnson played college football at Miami, FL and in the CFL for the Calgary Stampeders, before he started his career as a pro wrestler. If I remember right, he backed up Warren Sapp at Miami.

        5) When he was 14, Mets’ 3B Todd Frazier worked as a carnival barker on the boardwalk at the Jersey Shore. At the basketball shooting booth, where the rim may not have been totally round.

        4) Red Sox’ AAA farm team is moving from Pawtucket, RI to Worcester, MA in 2021; they’ve been in Pawtucket since 1973. Worcester is much closer to Boston; they’ll build a new stadium that hopefully will revitalize the Worcester area.

        3) Pirates lost consecutive games 1-0 games Thursday/Friday for first time since May 9 (at Padres), 10 (at Dodgers), way back in 1985. Both Chicago runs came on home runs.

        2) White Sox put Yoan Moncada back in the leadoff spot Friday, despite fact that he was hitting .144 since the All-Star break, with 31 strikeouts in his last 60 plate appearances.

        1) Thanks to Ken Thomsen and Andrew Fain for having me on their excellent radio show Friday night. Good baseball talk from out in Las Vegas; you can listen weeknights from 10-12pm on sportsxradio.com. You’ll be smarter about sports if you do.

        • LEADING OFF: Mets-Phils in Little League game, Urena starts
          August 18, 2018

A look at what's happening around the majors Sunday:

          BIG-N-LITTLE

Todd Frazier, Michael Conforto and Scott Kingery will be back in familiar territory when the Mets and Phillies play under the lights in the Little League Classic at Williamsport, Pennsylvania. The game will be held at Bowman Field, which seats about 2,500 fans as the home of the Williamsport Crosscutters, a Philadelphia affiliate in the Class A New York-Penn League. Nearby is the field where Frazier, Conforto and Kingery all played in the Little League World Series.

          GONNA START SOMETHING?

Jose Urena is set to start for the Marlins vs. Washington at Nationals Park. Urena's previous outing lasted only one pitch - he hit dynamic rookie Ronald Acuna Jr. with a fastball, setting off a bench-clearing incident in Atlanta, and was ejected. Major League Baseball suspended Urena six games, but the right-hander has appealed and can continue to play. There's speculation Urena will drop his appeal after this game, meaning he would miss the Marlins' series next weekend at home against the Braves.

          MISS YOU

Astros second baseman Jose Altuve is scheduled to begin a rehab assignment for Triple-A Fresno in a game at Tacoma. The reigning AL MVP has been out since July 25 with knee trouble - Houston hopes he can rejoin the club next week in Seattle.

Minus Altuve, the World Series champs have dropped 12 of 19 and lost their six-game lead in the AL West. Oakland has tied the Astros atop the division and will try for a sweep at the Coliseum when Sean Manaea (11-8, 3.44 ERA) starts against Justin Verlander (11-8, 2.52 ERA).

          HIYA

Yankees lefty J.A. Happ starts against Toronto, the team that traded him late last month. The 35-year-old Happ (13-6, 3.86 ERA) has won all three of his starts for New York. Ryan Borucki (2-2, 3.29) pitches for the visiting Blue Jays.

          AVAILABLE

Royals reliever Blaine Boyer has cleared waivers and is a free agent. The 37-year-old right-hander had a 12.05 ERA in 21 games when he was released. He also was 2-1 with one save, making him the only pitcher on the Kansas City staff with a win-loss record over .500.

                  • Verlander wins 200th, Astros back ahead of A's with 9-4 win
                    August 19, 2018

OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) Justin Verlander pitched just well enough to earn his 200th career win and the Houston Astros hit five home runs, beating the Oakland Athletics 9-4 Sunday to avoid a sweep and retake sole possession of the AL West lead.

The surging A's had won the first two games at the Coliseum to tie shaky Houston atop the division. But Yuli Gurriel hit a three-run homer in the third inning and Evan Gattis, Alex Bergman, Marwin Gonzalez and Martin Maldonado later homered for the defending World Series champions. Maldonado also tripled and doubled.

Verlander (12-8) gave up four runs in 5 1/3 innings while becoming the 114th pitcher with at least 200 career wins.

Oakland's Sean Manaea (11-9) was charged with six runs and nine hits in four-plus innings.

                    DODGERS 12, MARINERS 1

SEATTLE (AP) - Clayton Kershaw pitched seven sharp innings for his 150th career win, Justin Turner homered and drove in five runs, and Los Angeles routed Seattle.

Kershaw (6-5) gave up four hits, struck out seven and walked one. The 30-year-old lefty with three NL Cy Young Awards improved to 150-69 in the majors.

Turner extended his hitting streak to 13 games with a season-high four hits, including a three-run homer in the ninth inning with position player Andrew Romine on the mound.

Kike Hernandez had an RBI single as part of the Dodgers' five-run first inning against Roenis Elias (2-1). He added his 18th home run and a bases-loaded walk as the Dodgers won for the third time in four games.

                    BREWERS 2, CARDINALS 1

ST. LOUIS (AP) - Mike Moustakas hit a two-run double, Jhoulys Chacin beat St. Louis for the first time in his career and Milwaukee edged the Cardinals.

Milwaukee (69-57) snapped a three-game losing streak and moved back ahead of St. Louis (68-57) for the second National League wild card. The Cardinals lost for just the second time in their last 12 games.

Chacin (13-4) entered the game 0-7 with a 6.90 ERA in nine career games against the Cardinals, but shut them out through six innings as the Brewers avoided their first three-game sweep at St. Louis since July 1-3, 2016.

John Gant (5-5) gave up two runs on six hits and two walks in 4 1/3 innings.

                    PIRATES 2, CUBS 1, 11 INNINGS

PITTSBURGH (AP) - Adam Frazier hit a game-ending homer in the 11th inning, and Pittsburgh beat Chicago for a split of their four-game series.

Josh Harrison grounded out and Adeiny Hechavarria struck out before Frazier drove a 3-0 pitch from Brandon Kintzler (1-3) deep to right. It was Frazier's fifth homer of the season.

The Cubs had a prime scoring chance against Richard Rodriguez (3-2) in the top half of the inning, but came up empty. Addison Russell was picked off third by catcher Elias Diaz, and Albert Almora Jr. struck out looking with the bases loaded with two out.

NL Central-leading Chicago managed just one run in each game of the series, but took the first two behind strong pitching performances by Jon Lester and Cole Hamels.

                    ROCKIES 4, BRAVES 2

ATLANTA (AP) - DJ LeMahieu homered, German Marquez pitched seven solid innings and the Rockies closed out their first four-game sweep in Atlanta.

Colorado improved to 30-16 since June 26, and each of those 46 games came against teams with winning records at the time.

LeMahieu put Colorado in front with his third-inning drive to left field. He has hit nine of his 11 homers on the road, including a tiebreaking solo shot in the 10th inning of Saturday night's 5-3 win.

Marquez (11-9) won his fourth straight road decision. He allowed two runs and five hits.

Johan Camargo had two hits and two RBIs for Atlanta. Anibal Sanchez (6-4) struck out eight in 6 2/3 innings.

CLEVELAND (AP) - Melky Cabrera hit a grand slam to cap a six-run fourth inning and Cleveland beat Baltimore for its AL-leading 13th shutout.

Cabrera, batting right-handed against reliever Sean Gilmartin, hit a 1-1 pitch into the bleachers in left-center for the Indians' ninth grand slam this season, moving them into a tie with Boston and Cincinnati for the major league lead.

Mike Clevinger (9-7) pitched six innings and is 4-0 in five career starts against Baltimore. The right-hander allowed seven hits and struck out seven.

Orioles starter Yefry Ramirez (1-5) allowed seven runs in three-plus innings. The rookie right-hander was removed after the first five hitters reached base in the fourth.

                    MARLINS 12, NATIONALS 1

WASHINGTON (AP) - Jose Urena made the most of his borrowed time, pitching a two-hitter for his first complete game in the majors and leading Miami over Washington.

Urena (4-12) was suspended for six games by Major League Baseball after hitting Atlanta rookie Ronald Acuna Jr. on Wednesday. Urena was ejected from that start after throwing only one pitch and appealed the penalty, keeping him eligible to play.

Urena, tied for the NL lead in hit batters, didn't plunk anyone on the Nationals. He struck out four, walked two and retired the last 16 batters. It was his first complete game in 74 big league starts.

                    YANKEES 10, BLUE JAYS 2

NEW YORK (AP) - J.A. Happ stayed unbeaten with New York by topping his former Toronto teammates, and Greg Bird hit a grand slam during a six-run first inning.

The Yankees completed a three-game sweep, but lost shortstop Didi Gregorius to an injured left heel. Gregorius was hurt when he collided with Toronto first baseman Kendrys Morales beating an infield hit in the first, and was taken to a hospital for evaluation.

Rookie Miguel Andujar drove in two runs and backup infielder Ronald Torreyes, who replaced Gregorius, added three hits.

Happ (14-6) was facing the Blue Jays for the first time since they traded him to the Yankees on July 26. The 35-year-old has won all four of his starts for New York.

The Yankees' first six batters each reached base against Ryan Borucki (2-3).

                    RAYS 2, RED SOX 0

BOSTON (AP) - Jalen Beeks pitched four strong innings against the team that traded him last month and Tampa Bay limited Boston to two singles.

Joey Wendle and C.J. Cron homered as the Rays topped the AL East leaders for just the fifth time in 16 games this season. Six of those Tampa Bay losses have been by one run.

Boston, which owns the majors' best record, lost for only the fourth in 21 games and was shut out for the fifth time this season.

Beeks (2-1) gave up one hit in relief, striking out three and walking two.

Boston starter Hector Velazquez (7-1) gave up a run and three hits in four innings.

                    RANGERS 4, ANGELS 2

ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) - Rougned Odor connected on a go-ahead, three-run homer with rain falling in the seventh inning, and Texas beat Los Angeles to wrap up a soggy weekend.

Odor's 15th home run of the season came minutes before the second rain delay of a game that started 13 hours after the previous night's game ended. The rain had just started for the third time in Sunday's regularly scheduled game when Odor pulled a pitch from reliever Noe Ramirez (4-4) into the seats above the Texas bullpen in right-center field.

Shohei Ohtani doubled and scored the run that put the Angels up 2-1 in the fourth inning.

Three Texas relievers retired all nine hitters, starting with Matt Moore (3-6) in the seventh.

                    DIAMONDBACKS 4, PADRES 3

SAN DIEGO (AP) - A.J. Pollock homered in the ninth inning, and Arizona beat San Diego to stay on top of the NL West.

Pollock drove a 1-2 pitch from Kirby Yates (4-2) over the wall in left for his 16th homer, sending Arizona to its fourth win in five games. San Diego had tied it at 3 on Daniel Descalso's solo homer off rookie Trey Wingenter in the eighth.

Archie Bradley (4-4) pitched a scoreless eighth for the win, and Brad Boxberger retired the side in the ninth for his 28th save. The Diamondbacks remained a half-game ahead of Colorado, which won 4-2 at Atlanta.

                    TWINS 5, TIGERS 4

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) - Eddie Rosario hit a tiebreaking homer in the eighth inning and Minnesota connected three times in all, beating Detroit.

Max Kepler and Jake Cave also homered as the Twins won for the fifth time in six games.

Behind in the count 0-2 after two swings-and-misses to lead off the inning, Rosario launched the third fastball he saw from Alex Wilson (1-4) into the right field seats for his 22nd home run.

Trevor Hildenberger (3-3) relieved Taylor Rogers in the eighth and got James McCann on a grounder with two on to end the inning. He worked a scoreless ninth despite pinch-hitter Victor Reyes' leadoff single and a walk to Jose Iglesias to complete the outing.

                    WHITE SOX 7, ROYALS 6

CHICAGO (AP) - Omar Narvaez homered and drove in the go-ahead run with a single off Brian Flynn (3-4), Chicago relievers tossed seven scoreless innings and the White Sox rallied from a six-run deficit.

Avisail Garcia and Tim Anderson also homered for Chicago, which has won four of five.

Hector Santiago (5-3) allowed just two hits in four innings of relief to get the win. Jace Fry, the last of six relievers, got the final two outs for his second save.

Ryan O'Hearn, Whit Merrifield and Alex Gordon homered for Kansas City, which dropped to 2-13 in the rubber game of series this season.

                    REDS 11, GIANTS 4

CINCINNATI (AP) - Eugenio Suarez hit a two-run homer during Cincinnati's seven-run third inning, and the Reds swept San Francisco.

Jose Peraza also hit a two-run homer for Cincinnati, which outscored San Francisco 18-5 in the last two games of the weekend set. Billy Hamilton tripled twice and drove in three runs.

Reds right-hander Luis Castillo (7-10) struck out nine in 6 2/3 innings. He was charged with three runs, one earned, and six hits.

San Francisco dropped its fourth consecutive game. Andrew Suarez (4-9) was tagged for seven runs, five earned, and seven hits in a season-low 2 2/3 innings.

                      • LEADING OFF: Gregorius hurt, Stanton in Miami, Felix starts
                        August 19, 2018

A look at what's happening around the majors Monday:

                        AILING

The Yankees will see how shortstop Didi Gregorius is feeling, a day after he bruised his left heel in a collision while beating out an infield hit. Gregorius was hurt when he tumbled over Toronto first baseman Kendrys Morales.

Gregorius is batting .270 with 22 home runs and 74 RBIs, and has 48 extra-base hits this season.

''It's something that we'll monitor over the next 24 hours, could potentially be a DL thing,'' manager Aaron Boone said.

                        CHECK HIM

Cubs pitcher Yu Darvish had another setback in his injury-interrupted year, increasing speculation he might be done for the season. Darvish lasted just one inning in his rehab start with Class A South Bend on Sunday.

Darvish has been sidelined by triceps and elbow injuries, and shook his right arm as he left the field. The 32-year-old is 1-3 with a 4.95 ERA for Chicago and has made just eight starts since signing a $126 million, six-year contract.

                        VICTORY LANE

Indians ace Corey Kluber and Boston right-hander Rick Porcello start when Cleveland visits Fenway Park to begin a four-game matchup between AL division leaders. If either Kluber (15-6, 2.68 ERA) or Porcello (15-5, 4.04) get the victory, they would tie Washington's Max Scherzer and the Yankees' Luis Severino for the major league wins lead.

                        REMEMBER ME?

Yankees slugger Giancarlo Stanton plays at Marlins Park for the first time since Miami traded the 2017 NL MVP in December. Stanton played his first eight seasons with the Marlins, and led the majors with 59 home runs last year. Stanton has hit 32 this year for New York, giving him a career total of 299.

''It's going to be weird for sure walking in, going to the visitors' side,'' Stanton said. ''But I am looking forward to it. It's a big part of my life, my time down there. It will be a cool experience.''

                        FIT FOR A KING

Felix Hernandez returns to Seattle's rotation, a week after the only relief appearance of his career. The longtime Mariners ace (8-11, 5.62 ERA) was recently bumped to the bullpen after a series of shaky starts. He threw 5 2/3 innings of relief last Tuesday after James Paxton was forced to leave when he was hit in the pitching arm by a line drive. Hernandez will start in Paxton's place when the M's host Gerrit Cole (11-5, 2.71) and the Astros.

                          **********

Armadillo: Monday's List of 13: Wrapping up a sports weekend……

                          13) Sunday the Cubs became the first team in major league history to score exactly one run in four straight games, with each run coming on a home run.

                          12) What does it say about Texans’ coach Bill O’Brien’s job security that the Houston Texans hired seven new assistant coaches this offseason? New strength coaches, new special teams coaches; not really sure what that says.

As long as Deshaun Watson stays healthy, O’Brien should stay employed.

                          11) Sportsbook at the Palms in Las Vegas took a $20,000 bet Saturday on the Texans +2.5; third-string QB Joe Webb led a 5-play, 75-yard TD drive for Houston in the last 2:00 of the game- they scored on a 41-yard TD pass with 0:27 left to win 16-13, when replay showed the receiver should’ve been down on the 3-yard line.

They probably would’ve scored anyway, but it was a pretty obvious error by the replay guys.

Imagine betting $20K on a freaking exhibition game and needing Joe Webb to pass well for you to win the bet? Webb is a 31-year old journeyman who has played special teams as much as he’s played QB in his career, but Webb came up big in this game and the bettor won his $20,000.

                          10) All of which reminds me of watching NFL games in the Westgate Theater a few years ago; if you love football and betting on football, you have to do this someday— great fun.

I’m watching games, and talking to a guy wearing an Arizona Cardinals’ jersey; we talked for an hour or so, football stuff, and all of a sudden the guy tells me he is betting $6,000 a game on the four 4:00 (ET) games.

$6,000 a game?!?!?! I’m queasy about my three $30 bets— hahaha, and this guy has $24,000 out there and is relaxed as you could be. Sometimes when I’m visiting Las Vegas it eludes me that I’m sitting on the fringes of the big leagues of gambling.

                          9) It also dawned on me the other day that Arizona State hired 64-year old Herm Edwards as its football coach and that is going to be fascinating to follow this season.

Edwards last coached in college in 1989, as an assistant at San Jose State; if he recruits well at ASU, and he is a former NFL head coach, then he should be alright, but Todd Graham just went 46-32 in six years with the Sun Devils and he got fired.

Put it this way; UCLA hired Chip Kelly as its coach; which hire do you think was better?

                          8) Mariners 5, Dodgers 4 (10)— The seldom-seen walk-off balk (balk-off?) gave Seattle this win late Saturday night; Mariners had the bases loaded with one out, so they probably would’ve scored anyway, but hell of a way to lose a game. If you have Kyle Seager on your fantasy team and you need RBI’s this week, you lost a big chance for an easy one there. He was batting when the balk happened.

                          7) Presented without opinion: Paul O’Neill said on TV this weekend that if he was up with three hits late in a game, and had a chance to hit for the cycle, he would rather hit a second homer than hit for the cycle. Apparently, media makes more out of hitting for cycles than lot of players do. Interesting.

                          6) Most games pitched this year allowing 0 or 1 earned runs, with 7+ IP:

                          Jacob deGrom: 11
                          Aaron Nola: 9
                          Corey Kluber: 8
                          Carlos Carrasco: 8

                          5) Mookie Betts has scored 100 runs in 103 games this season. Red Sox are 15-2 in David Price’s last 17 starts. Boston is getting ready for the playoffs already, I’m sure.

                          4) Best record in games where winning run scored from 7th inning on:
                          A’s 30-11, Cubs 23-10, Mariners 28-14, Red Sox 18-10

                          3) Worst record in games where winning run scored from 7th inning on:
                          Orioles 9-23, Royals 11-21, Indians 12-21, Nationals 14-20

                          2) Five college basketball teams with most experience returning this coming season:

                          1. Washington, 95.2% of minutes return
                          2. Wisconsin, 93.9%
                          3. Syracuse, 90.8%
                          4. Iowa, 90.5%
                          5. Kansas State, 89.0%

                          1) Damn, Robert Deniro turned 75 years old this week, Robert Redford turned 82. Not even sure what to say about this, other than time sure goes by quickly.

                                Going Klubbin'

The Cleveland Indians and Boston Red Sox will meet for the first time this season when the teams take the field at Fenway Park at 7:10 p.m. ET. It's a possible playoff preview, too, as these teams are on a collision course for the postseason. It's a primetime pitching matchup, too, as two-time Cy Young Award winner Corey Kluber takes the ball from manager Terry Francona against Rick Porcello, the 2016 Cy winner. These two pitchers have won the award in three of the past four seasons.

The Indians have won five straight road contests, and seven of their past eight games overall. They're also 20-7 in the past 27 games overall against a right-handed starter, and 12-2 in the past 14 on the road vs. RHP. In addition, the Indians are an impressive 22-8 over the past 30 road outings, and 11-4 in his past 15 assignments against American League East foes. While that's a great record, the Indians are 0-4 across his past four tries against teams with a winning overall record. The Red Sox enter this battle red hot, too, going 39-12 in the past 51 games overall. They're also an impressive 44-16 in the past 60 games at Fewnay Park. Boston has pushed aside nine of their past 11 opponents from the AL Central, and they're 6-1 in the past seven at home against teams with an overall winning record. The BoSox have won eight of Porcello's past 10 starts, and they're 8-3 in his past 11 at home. Boston is also 4-0 in his past four tries against teams with a winning overall record.

As mentioned, this is the first meeting this season between the contenders. Totals bettors will see the over is 3-1-2 in the past six meetings between these sides. However, the under is 4-1-2 in the past seven matchups at Fenway Park, and 4-1 in the past five starts by Kluber against the BoSox. The under is also 16-5 in Porcello's past 21 starts at the Fens against teams with a winning record, and 22-8-2 in their past 32 games overall at home. The under is also 4-0 in Cleveland's past four overall, and 4-0 in their past four vs. RHP. However, the over is an alarming 16-4-1 in Kluber's past 21 starts, and 4-0-1 in his past five inside the AL East. The over is a perfect 6-0 in his past six road outings, too.

                                Looking Ahead

                                Monday, Aug. 20

The Orioles and Blue Jays are going nowhere and just playing out the string for the final six weeks. However, there is still plenty of money to be made, regardless of teams' records. Baltimore has won just 20 of their past 73 overall, and they're 15-37 in the past 52 inside the American League East. They're also just 11-46 in the past 57 on the road vs. RHP, and 12-39 in their past 51 overall against righties. They'll roll out Andrew Cashner in Toronto, but they're just 1-5 in his past six against teams with a losing overall record, and 2-5 in his past seven on the road. Baltimore is also 0-5 in Cashner's past five road starts against a team with a losing overall mark. The Jays aren't much better, going 2-7 in their past nine at home, and 0-4 in the past four overall. However, they're 21-8 in the past 29 against teams with a winning percentage under .400. Marco Estrada might be the difference, too, as the Jays are a perfect 5-0 in his past five against teams with a losing record, and 5-1 in his past six at home against losing teams. Moreover, the O's are 0-7 in the past seven in this series, with Toronto a perfect 7-0 in the past seven starts at home by Estrada against Baltimore. They're also 5-1 in his past six overall against the O's. The under is 28-8-1 in the past 37 in this series, too, including 17-5 in the past 22 in Toronto. With Estrada face the O's, the under is an impressive 9-3 over the past 12, too.

Speaking of teams going nowhere, the White Sox and Twins hook up at Target Field in Minneapolis. The Twins just recalled LHP Stephen Gonsalves to start against RHP Lucas Giolito. The Pale Hose have been a little better lately, going 4-1 in the past five games overall, while posting victories in five of the past six starts with Giolito on the hill. They're also 5-1 in Giolito's past six outings on the road, and 4-0 in his past four against teams with a losing overall record. Chicago has also won five straight on the road with Giolito toeing the slab. The Twins haven't quite thrown in the towel on their season, winning five of the past six. They're also 22-8 over the past 30 at Target, while going 20-8 in their past 28 at home vs. RHP. Chicago has won just two of the past eight trips to Minnesota, however. Total bettors might pound the 'under', which is 5-0-1 in the past six meetings in the Twin Cities. The under is also 4-0 in Giolito's past four starts while going 6-1-1 in the past eight meetings overall in this series.

                                Weather Report
The weather looks great for Monday, as there is little to no precipitation in the forecast with variable winds at most venues, too. In addition, four of the 10 games will be played in games with domes or retractable roofs, too.

                                Tuesday, Aug. 21

The Phillies took it on the chin Sunday night in Williamsport, Penn. against the Mets at the Little League Classic, but that was a rare hiccup. They are streaking toward a potential postseason spot, but they cannot afford any costly losses. They'll face the fading Nationals, who still have a glimmer of hope for the playoffs, but time is running out. RHP Vince Velasquez takes the ball for Philly, but that hasn't been a good thing lately. Philadelphia is 0-5 in the right-hander's past five road starts, including a shocking 0-4 in his past four outings away from home against teams with a losing record. They're also just 3-8 in the past 11 overall on the road, and 1-5 in the past six road outings against teams with a losing record. They can ill-afford to lose games to teams they should be beating if they wish to make playoff plans. The Nats have won just twice in the past eight outings, and they're 1-4 in their past five against teams with a winning record. However, Washington is still 7-3 in the past 10 home games vs. RHP. Philly has owned this series, going 5-2 in the past seven meetings overall, but they're just 7-16 in the past 23 meetings in D.C.

The Padres will open a series with the red-hot Rockies at Coors Field in Denver on Tuesday night. San Diego has been awful, winning just 15 of their past 55 games overall. They can't seem to get out of their own way inside the division, either, going just 19-40 in the past 59 vs. NL West foes. LHP Robbie Erlin isn't offering much resistance lately, as San Diego is just 3-9 across his past 12 outings, and 2-5 over his past seven road starts. They're a dismal 1-6 in his past seven against division opponents, too. The Rockies are 5-0 in their past five at home vs. LHP, and 12-2 in their past 14 overall against southpaws. They have also won 20 of their past 27 at home while going 7-2 in the past nine vs. NL West clubs. San Diego hasn't had much luck at Coors, winning just six of their past 20 in Denver. The under is 4-1 in the past five at Coors, and five of the past seven meetings overall. The under is also 8-0 in Colorado's past eight at home vs. LHP, and 12-4 in the past 16 overall against southpaws.
