  • Friday’s 6-pack

Odds on SEC QB to pass for the most yards this season:

    2-1- Drew Lock, Missouri

    3-1- Jordan Ta’amu, Ole Miss

    6-1- Jake Bentley, South Carolina

8-1- Jake Fromm, Georgia and Jarrett Stidham, Auburn

12-1- Nick Fitzgerald, Miss State, Tua Tagovailia, Alabama

20-1- Kyle Shurmur, Vanderbilt, Nick Starkel, Texas A&M

    Quote of the Day
“You’ve lost three games, he’s hit three home runs. You’ve got to hit him.”
Keith Hernandez, applying old-school baseball logic to Ronald Acuna’s battering the Marlins this week- they drilled him with the first pitch Wednesday, and all hell broke loose.

    Friday’s quiz
Besides Bill Belichick (18 years), which NFL head coach has been in his job the longest?

    Thursday’s quiz
Eldrick Woods won the 1997 Masters and his first PGA Tour money title; Tom Lehman won the money title the year before, in 1996.

    Wednesday’s quiz
Mets’ OF Austin Jackson is the only current major leaguer whose first name and last name are both state capitals.

    ************************

Friday’s List of 13: Random stuff with the weekend here……

    13) 14 of 32 NFL teams have a new offensive coordinator this season; 10 teams have new defensive coordinators.

Two offensive coordinators are coming in from the college ranks, and that should be interesting; former Oregon coach Mark Helfrich is the Bears’ new OC and Brian Daboll comes in from Alabama to run the Buffalo Bills’ offense.

    12) When the AAF debuts next spring, the 8-team football league will have well-known head coaches: Steve Spurrier, Mike Martz, Dennis Erickson, but the most interesting coach might be Michael Vick, who will be an offensive coordinator in the new league next spring.

    11) There are eight special teams coaches in the NFL who have been with their current team longer than the head coach of that team. Thats 25% of the league.

    10) Tampa Bay 3, New York 1— Spunky Rays are 62-59, and 8-7 against their divisional rivals from the Bronx.

Hitters 6-9 in the New York lineup Thursday are hitting: .218, .211, .170, .129

    9) Last I checked, the Westgate NFL handicapping SuperContest had 911 entries. Contest had around 2,800 entries last year- they think it will wind up with around 3,300-3,500 entrants at $1,500 a pop— first prize will over $1M, all for picking five NFL games a week and doing it better than anyone else.

    8) Duke and Kentucky had the best basketball recruiting classes this year, because they always do— who else gets their summer tour games shown on ESPN? Sports Illustrated was suggesting this week that Oregon may have the third-best recruiting class in the country this season, so that will be interesting to follow.

    7) One of the better scenes in Hard Knocks so far was QB Tyrod Taylor telling coach Hue Jackson to call out players who aren’t hustling in practice, while showing film of them not hustling. Easy to visualize Taylor being a coach someday.

    6) When the Mets went from Baltimore to Philadelphia after Wednesday night’s game, they flew the 90-mile trip instead of taking a bus or the train. The flight took 19 minutes.

    5) Dodgers 2B Brian Dozier blamed some allergy medicine for making him dizzy; pitcher Ross Stripling blamed a soft hotel bed at the Ritz-Carlton for his sore back. No wonder football players get annoyed that they don’t have guaranteed contracts but baseball players do.

    4) Miami Dolphins coach Adam Gase started a program this offseason to bring high school and youth teams to see the Dolphins practice. More than 1,800 kids have taken advantage of this and have seen Miami practice/work out. Good for the Dolphins. Good for the kids.

    3) WHIP is a baseball stat that measures baserunners a pitcher allowed (Walks + Hits divided by Innings Pitched). Whats weird about the stat is that hit batters are not included, and they should be, moreso than an intentional walk, which isn’t the pitcher’s fault.

    2) Cardinals’ 1B Matt Carpenter hurt his hand Wednesday; x-rays were negative. Carpenter proved to the Cardinals’ trainer that his hand was OK by opening a jar of salsa in the clubhouse.

    1) Colorado State football coach Mike Bobo, 44, is being treated for peripheral neuropathy.

According to the Mayo Clinic’s website, peripheral neuropathy is “a result of damage to your peripheral nerves, often causes weakness, numbness and pain, usually in your hands and feet. It can also affect other areas of your body. … Peripheral neuropathy can result from traumatic injuries, infections, metabolic problems, inherited causes and exposure to toxins.”

We wish Coach Bobo well in his recovery.

          • Friday's Diamond Notes
            Kevin Rogers

Hottest team: Indians (10-2 last 12)

There are two teams that opened as favorites of -360 or higher on Friday. One of them is Washington against Miami with Max Scherzer on the mound. The other is the AL Central-leading Indians, who have pulled away in the division to lead the Twins by 12 ½ games after pulling off a three-game sweep of in-state rival Cincinnati. Cleveland has pretty much sewed up a playoff berth for the third straight season as the Tribe is coming off their sixth consecutive victory – all against teams sitting below the .500 mark.

Cleveland welcomes in the team owning the worst record in baseball, the 36-85 Baltimore Orioles. The Wynn sportsbook in Las Vegas had the Tribe as high as -400 favorites on Thursday night with Carlos Carrasco getting the ball. Carrasco is seeking his 15th victory of the season, while Cleveland has won six of his past seven starts (all as a favorite of -170 or higher). Carrasco beat the Orioles earlier this season at Camden Yards, 2-1 as he limited Baltimore to six hits and one run in 7.1 innings of work in April.

Coldest team: Pirates (1-5 last six)

The NL Central race has tightened up with five games separating the Cubs, Brewers, and Cardinals for the top spot. The Pirates were hanging around but have gone backwards at the wrong time by losing five of six since a brief three-game winning streak on their recent road trip at Colorado and San Francisco. After getting swept in a two-game set at Minnesota, the Bucs dropped the opener of their home series with the Cubs last night, 1-0 to fall to 61-61 on the season and 6 ½ games out of the second Wild Card spot in the National League.

The Pirates have lost six of their last seven Game 2’s of a series at home as they try to turn around that trend with Trevor Williams on the mound. Williams has won four of his past five starts, while not allowing a run in the four victories. The former Arizona State standout defeated the Cubs at Wrigley Field earlier this season, 6-1 as a +170 underdog by allowing one earned run in six innings of work.

Hottest pitcher: Cole Hamels, Cubs (2-0, 1.00 ERA)

In his final start as a member of the Rangers, Hamels was tagged for seven runs in five innings of a 15-3 home defeat to the Athletics on July 23. Since getting dealt to the Cubs at the trade deadline, the southpaw has yielded three runs in three starts, while Chicago has won all three of Hamels’ outings. The first victory came at PNC Park over the Pirates, as Hamels will look to beat Pittsburgh again on Friday night. Hamels received a no-decision in his previous outing against Washington on Sunday as the Cubs hit a walk-off grand slam in the ninth inning to edge the Nationals, 4-3.

Coldest pitcher: Robbie Ray, Diamondbacks (3-2, 4.83 ERA)

Arizona continues its series with San Diego at Petco Park as the Diamondbacks are stuck in a logjam for the top spot in the NL West. The D-backs are winless in Ray’s last six starts dating back to July 12, while his last victory came on June 27 at home against the Marlins. Although Ray has allowed two earned runs or less in each of his last two starts, he has failed to pitch past the sixth inning in three straight outings. Since 2017, the D-backs own a perfect 5-0 record when Ray starts against San Diego, while Arizona has scored at least nine runs in four of those wins.

Biggest OVER run: Mets (6-2-1 last nine)

New York was showcased in a horrible light on July 31 when the Mets were drubbed by the Nationals, 25-4. However, the Mets’ offense has woken up the last few days as they scored 16 runs in Wednesday’s blowout of the Orioles. New York topped that mark less than 24 hours later by dropping a 24-spot on the Phillies in the opening game of a double-header on Thursday. The Mets scored six more runs in the second game last night, but fell to the Phillies, 9-6 to cash a third straight OVER. Tonight, runs should be at a premium as the Mets send out Noah Syndergaard opposite Philadelphia ace Aaron Nola, who has seen the UNDER cash in three starts against New York this season.

Biggest UNDER run: Rays (6-0 last six)

Tampa Bay picked up its third consecutive series victory as the Rays took the final two games over the Yankees in the Bronx. The Rays’ pitching staff has been terrific of late by allowing two runs or less in five of the past six games, including yielding two runs in the last two wins at New York. Tampa Bay plays the third leg of its AL East road trip at Boston this weekend as the Rays have limited the high-powered Red Sox to four runs or less in four straight meetings. The Rays are riding a six-game UNDER streak in road series openers dating back to the start of July.

Matchup to watch: Astros vs. Athletics

By the end of the weekend, the Oakland A’s can be in first place of the AL West. Yes, that is a true statement, assuming the A’s pull off a home sweep of the defending champion Astros. Although Oakland lost the finale of its home series to Seattle in 12 innings, the A’s still took two of three from the Mariners to improve to 17-4 in the last 21 games at the Coliseum.

The Astros ended a five-game losing streak in Wednesday’s 12-1 blowout of the Rockies, while also picking up their first home win since July 14. Houston is one of the rare teams to possess a better record on the road than at home as it owns a magnificent 41-18 mark away from Minute Maid Park this season. Charlie Morton is coming off four straight quality starts for Houston, while the Astros have won six of his 10 road outings this season.

The A’s have yet to beat the Astros in six meetings at the Coliseum as they try to break through with veteran Edwin Jackson on the mound. Jackson has turned into a valuable pickup for this Oakland rotation as the right-hander has yielded one run in his past three starts, while the A’s are 3-0 in this stretch. In spite of Oakland’s struggles against Houston at home, the A’s did capture three of four from the Astros in their previous series at Minute Maid Park prior to the All-Star break.

            Betcha didn’t know:
The other big matchup out west this weekend highlights the lone interleague matchup as the Dodgers travel to Seattle to face the Mariners. Wade LeBlanc takes the hill for the M’s in Friday’s opener as Seattle has won nine of his 10 starts at Safeco Field this season. However, the Mariners have struggled at home recently by going 3-6 in their last nine at Safeco, while compiling a 2-6 record in their past nine interleague contests.

            Biggest public favorite:
            Indians (-380) vs. Orioles

            Biggest public underdog:
            Brewers (+115) at Cardinals

            Biggest line move:
Astros (-137 to -147) at Athletics

                • Cubs turn record-tying 7 double plays, beat Pirates 1-0
                  August 18, 2018

NEW YORK (AP) The Chicago Cubs tied a major league record by turning seven double plays Friday night, including a game-ending effort by rookie third baseman David Bote on a grounder by David Freese to finish off a 1-0 win over the Pittsburgh Pirates.

The Cubs got six double plays on grounders - five with Cole Hamels pitching - and one on a line drive. The Elias Sports Bureau said the Cubs became the third team in big league history to turn seven DPs in a nine-inning game.

Pittsburgh put runners on first and second in the ninth before Jesse Chavez got Freese to ground to Bote. Having hit a game-ending grand slam last Sunday night to beat Washington 4-3, Bote again was in the right place to cap off a win. Bote stepped on third and threw to first base to end it.

Hamels (8-9) pitched seven solid innings. Kyle Schwarber hit a home run in the second off Trevor Williams (10-9). Chavez got his second save as the Pirates lost their fifth in a row.

The Cubs beat the Pirates by a 1-0 score for the second straight game.

                  CARDINALS 5, BREWERS 2

ST. LOUIS (AP) - Kolten Wong and Marcell Ozuna drove in two runs apiece, Jack Flaherty pitched six shutout innings and St. Louis beat Milwaukee.

The Cardinals won for the ninth time in 10 games and pulled within a half-game of the Brewers for the NL's second wild-card spot.

Milwaukee has dropped three of four.

Flaherty (7-6) gave up three hits, walked three and struck out seven. The Brewers had only two runners reach second base against the rookie, who has allowed two earned runs in his past 19 innings pitched.

Bud Norris earned his 24th save in 28 opportunities.

Freddy Peralta (5-4) went six innings, giving up three earned runs.

                  DODGERS 11, MARINERS 1

SEATTLE (AP) - Manny Machado hit two of Los Angeles' five home runs and Walker Buehler allowed one run in six innings in the win over Seattle.

The Dodgers won consecutive games for just the third time since July 28, using the long ball to knock around Seattle starter Wade LeBlanc and for a night take the pressure off their shaky bullpen. Machado's first homer led off the fourth inning and was his third since being acquired in a trade with Baltimore. He added a two-run shot in the seventh inning.

Machado has 28 homers overall this season.

LeBlanc (7-3) allowed seven runs, five earned, and lasted just 4 1/3 innings.

Buehler (6-4) allowed just Ryon Healy's home run leading off the fourth inning. The young right-hander struck out eight and gave up three hits.

                  ROCKIES 11, BRAVES 5

ATLANTA (AP) - Ian Desmond tripled and drove in five runs, Kyle Freeland pitched six strong innings and Colorado beat Atlanta.

The Rockies have won six of seven, and they're 28-14 since June 28, tops in the NL over that span. And they've done it without the benefit of many blowouts: Friday's game snapped a franchise-long, 25-game streak in which the Rockies scored six runs or fewer.

Sean Newcomb (10-6) struggled for his second straight start as Atlanta's NL East lead dropped to one-half game over Philadelphia. Colorado began the night 1+ games out of the West lead.

Ronald Acuna Jr. reached on an infield single in the first against Freeland and scored on a sacrifice fly, but that was all Atlanta could muster against him.

Freeland (11-7) gave up three hits and four walks and struck out four, improving to 5-1 with a 2.20 ERA over 12 starts since June 16.

                  PHILLIES 4, METS 2

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Aaron Nola struck out 11 in seven impressive innings to stay unbeaten at Citizens Bank Park, pitching Philadelphia past New York.

Asdrubal Cabrera hit an RBI double off former teammate Noah Syndergaard during a three-run first inning, and Nola made the early lead stand up.

Nola (14-3) allowed one run on three hits with one walk while lowering his ERA in 2.24. The All-Star is even better at home, improving to 9-0 with a 2.00 mark in 12 starts in Philadelphia this season.

Pat Neshek pitched a scoreless ninth for his third save in as many chances.

Syndergaard (8-3) allowed four runs on eight hits with five strikeouts and two walks in 5 2/3 innings.

                  YANKEES 7, BLUE JAYS 5, 7 INNINGS

NEW YORK (AP) - Neil Walker hit a three-run homer, Giancarlo Stanton added an impressive opposite-field blast and New York rallied for a rain-shortened victory over Toronto.

Stanton hit his 31st homer of the season into a party deck behind the home bullpen in the bottom of the seventh, and a batter later, umpires pulled the teams off the field amid rain at Yankee Stadium. The game was called with one out in the seventh after a delay of 1 hour, 25 minutes.

Chad Green (6-2) pitched two scoreless innings for the win. In a scoring oddity, David Robertson got his third save despite not recording the final out of the game.

Rookie Gleyber Torres drove in the go-ahead run with a fielder's choice off Joe Biagini (1-7) in the fifth.

Toronto jumped on starter Lance Lynn for four runs in the first inning.

                  NATIONALS 8, MARLINS 2

WASHINGTON (AP) - Max Scherzer pitched six scoreless innings for his major league-leading 16th win, and Ryan Zimmerman and Matt Wieters homered as Washington beat Miami.

After throwing seven shutout innings against the Cubs Sunday only to watch Chicago win on a walk-off grand slam, Scherzer (16-5) left with a 5-0 lead and watched as the Nationals thwarted a Marlins rally.

Scherzer allowed at least one baserunner in four of six innings but worked out of trouble as Washington opened a six-game homestand with little margin for error as it seeks to get back into playoff contention.

Bryce Harper and Adam Eaton had three hits each for Washington, which has won two straight after losing seven of its previous nine.

Austin Dean homered for his first career hit for the Marlins, who have lost six straight.

Miami's Dan Straily (4-6) allowed five runs on nine hits in six innings.

                  RED SOX 7, RAYS 3

BOSTON (AP) - Xander Bogaerts hit a two-run triple and added a pair of doubles, and Boston scored seven straight runs after allowing three in the first to beat Tampa Bay.

Jackie Bradley Jr. had two hits, including an RBI double in the sixth, and the Red Sox improved on the best record in the majors with their 87th victory.

Brian Johnson recovered after getting roughed up in the first with three runs on four hits and a walk. Johnson (4-3) didn't allow another run and pitched 5 2/3 innings before leaving after Joey Wendle's two-out double in the sixth - Tampa Bay's first hit since the first inning.

Wendle drove in two runs with a double in the first and Carlos Gomez had an RBI single for the Rays.

Yonny Chirinos (1-5) took over for Ryne Stanek in the second inning and allowed five runs on nine hits over six innings.

                  REDS 2, GIANTS 1, 11 INNINGS

CINCINNATI (AP) - Phillip Ervin led off the 11th inning with a home run over the center field fence, lifting Cincinnati over San Francisco.

Ervin's third homer of the season and first career walk-off drive came on a 1-1 pitch from Ray Black (2-2).

David Hernandez (5-0) struck out two in a perfect 11th inning as the Reds ended a four-game losing streak.

Scooter Gennett had three hits for the Reds. Andrew McCutchen had three of San Francisco's eight hits.

Cincinnati starter Anthony DeSclafani pitched a season-high 7 2/3 innings, giving up six hits and one run with one walk and five strikeouts. He retired 11 consecutive batters from the fifth into the eighth.

Casey Kelly, making his 10th major league start and first since May 22, 2016, for Atlanta, pitched around giving up nine hits and a walk to allow just one run in 4 1/3 innings.

                  INDIANS 2, ORIOLES 1

CLEVELAND (AP) - Carlos Carrasco pitched seven scoreless innings and moved into a tie for the AL lead with his 15th win, Jose Ramirez hit his 37th home run and Cleveland beat Baltimore.

Carrasco (15-6) allowed three hits, struck out six and retired his final 10 hitters.

Ramirez's first-inning homer tied him with Boston's J.D. Martinez, who entered Friday with the major league lead.

Cleveland has won six straight and is a season-high 19 games over .500 (70-51).

David Hess (2-7) allowed two runs in six innings for the Orioles. Trey Mancinci's RBI single in the eighth scored the only run for Baltimore, which has lost 11 of 13.

Cody Allen walked Renato Nunez with one out in the ninth. Pinch-runner Craig Gentry stole second before Tim Beckham flied out. Allen struck Joey Rickard for his 24th save in 27 chances.

                  TWINS 5, TIGERS 4

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) - Pinch-hitter Joe Mauer hit a go-ahead, three-run homer in the seventh inning, and Minnesota beat Detroit.

Eddie Rosario and Tyler Austin added solo home runs for Minnesota, which finally broke through against Detroit starter Matt Boyd to win its fourth straight game.

Kyle Gibson (7-9) allowed three runs and eight hits and struck out five in seven innings for the Twins. Taylor Rogers earned his first major league save by striking out Jeimer Candelario with two runners on in the ninth.

Boyd (7-11) beat Minnesota on Sunday and had not allowed a hit over the previous nine innings until Austin singled to start the fifth on Friday. Boyd stranded Austin, but the Twins finally broke through an inning later.

Rosario homered to break the scoreless streak against Boyd. Austin started a four-run seventh with his second home run in five games for Minnesota, a towering shot that reached the second deck in left-center field.

                  RANGERS 6, ANGELS 4

ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) - Rougned Odor drove in three runs with a single and a sacrifice fly, Joey Gallo ripped a two-run double and Texas beat pitching-depleted Los Angeles.

Odor's two-run single capped a five-run outburst in the second inning off recently acquired Odrisamer Despaigne (2-1), the 14th starting pitcher used by the Angels this season.

Drew Hutchison (2-2) struck out six and allowed two runs over five innings in his third start for the Rangers. Jose Leclerc struck out the side in the ninth for his fourth save.

Gallo's double into the right-field corner made it 2-0 before he scored on a groundout by Isiah Kiner-Falefa. Odor's two-run single was the fourth consecutive Rangers hit after that, and he added a sac fly in the seventh inning.

                  WHITE SOX 9, ROYALS 3

CHICAGO (AP) - Jose Abreu and Nicky Delmonico hit three-run homers in a seven-run, seventh-inning outburst, lifting Chicago past Kansas City.

Delmonico went 2 for 4 and had a career-high five RBIs. Tim Anderson went 3 for 3 with a walk and two stolen bases for Chicago, which has won eight of 14.

Abreu's homer was his 22nd. The White Sox have homered in a season-high nine straight games, totaling 13 during that stretch.

James Shields (5-14) allowed three runs on six hits in seven innings to snap a five-start winless streak.

Yoan Moncada started the rally in the seventh with a walk. Yolmer Sanchez then followed with a slow grounder to shortstop that Alcides Escobar booted for an error - snapping the Royals' 16-game errorless streak.

Right-hander Jason Adam came on to replace Tim Hill (1-4) and Abreu hit the first pitch into the left-center bleachers to give the White Sox a 5-3 lead.

Average home attendance for college hoop teams in California last year:

                    10) Cal-Santa Barbara 2,123

                    **********

Armadillo: Saturday's List of 13: Clearing out a cluttered mind…….

                    13) Never give up on your dreams: In 1976, Cornell fired its football coach. When an Ivy League coach gets the boot, it is often a career-killer. Especially when your record was 3-15.

But this guy went back to coach in college, coached DB’s at Stanford for three years, got hired by the 49ers as a DB’s coach, was promoted to defensive coordinator in 1983, then was named head coach of the 49ers in 1989.

13 years after being fired by a freakin’ Ivy League school, George Seifert won the Super Bowl as head coach of the 49ers. Never give up on your dreams.

                    12) After practice the other day, Steelers’ WR Antonio Brown caught 129 passes on the JUGS machine, the last 50 with a defender trapping one arm so he had to catch balls one-handed.

Much like Steph Curry shooting 3’s, you become great at your craft by working at it.

                    11) George Kottaras played seven years in the major leagues, caught 246 games; I remember him best from helping the A’s win their division in 2012.

Kottaras is the last catcher to hit for the cycle, which he did for Milwaukee in 2011. His triple that night was one of only three career triples that he hit.

                    10) Speaking of cycles, 2B Aaron Hill hit for the cycle twice in 12 days for Arizona in 2012; Hill hit .266 in a 13-year career, but he did hit over .300 in both 2011, 2012. Hitting for the cycle twice in 12 days is a hell of an accomplishment.

                    9) Alex, I’d like Stupid Decisions for $100, please:

Back in 1979, when the Big East was founded as a basketball-only league, two teams turned the new league down; Holy Cross and Rutgers. Whoops.

Holy Cross wound up joining the Patriot League, had a nice run with Ralph Willard as coach 12-15 years ago, but they could’ve been in the freakin’ Big East!!!

Colleges use sports as a way to raise big money for the entire school, via wealthy boosters; if Holy Cross had been just a decent Big East team (their program was very good in the late 70’s), they’d probably be D-I in football now, too. One decision sent their school in a totally different direction.

                    8) Remind me not to ask Jalen Ramsey of the Jaguars for help evaluating NFL QB’s for fantasy football. His analysis this week of both Aaron Rodgers and Tom Brady: “Doesn’t suck”

                    7) Marlins’ pitcher Jose Ureña got a six-game suspension for drilling Ronald Acuña in the first inning Wednesday; lot of outraged people on Twitter about the incident.

Our society has gotten very soft; when I was a little kid, stuff like that was normal. Hitters knew how to protect themselves, how to get out of the way.

Last time a starting pitcher hit his first batter of the game and got ejected: John Lackey on May 16, 2009, when he drilled Ian Kinsler after Kinsler had homered twice the day before.

Don Drysdale hit 154 batters in his Hall of Fame career, one because he was told to walk him intentionally, so he plunked him with the first pitch instead, to save time.

                    6) Kid named Trey Quinn is a WR who played for SMU; he was the last player taken in the NFL Draft last spring, but has had a strong training camp and may make the Redskins’ squad.

Ten years ago. Quinn threw a no-hitter in the Little League World Series; his team from St Charles, LA lost the US Championship game, finished 4th in the World Series.

                    5) What was up in Green Bay Thursday? 9:35 left in 3rd quarter, Packers led Pittsburgh 48-22; they went on to win, 51-34. A wide receiver named Kumerow caught a long TD pass, wound up with three catches for 114 yards; he played college ball at Wisconsin-Whitewater, a long way from Lambeau Field.

                    4) Oakland pitcher Brett Anderson’s last two home starts:
                    — A 1-0 win over Detroit in 13 innings
                    — A 2-0 loss to Seattle in 12 innings.

                    3) When I watch the Padres play late at night on the Extra Innings package, I wish they’d go back to their brown/gold uniforms that they wore when they first came into the major leagues.

San Diego’s best player back then was a first baseman named Nate Colbert; boy could he hit. On August 1, 1972, Colbert hit five homers, knocked in 12 runs in a doubleheader in Atlanta.

Colbert hit 38 homers that year, knocked in 111 runs; he wound up with 173 career homers, and one of the best single days in baseball history.

                    2) Mets beat Philly 24-4 in the first game of a doubleheader Thursday; teams can bring up a 26th player for twinbills, so it should be illegal for them to use a position player to pitch in a doubleheader. Teams have enough pitchers; they just coddle them so much, it is ridiculous.

More and more, teams are openly giving up in games, letting position players pitch, letting the regular pitchers stick to their normal schedules. God forbid anyone’s feelings get hurt.

                    1) People bet on the Little League World Series; I wish I was making that up.

Thursday, a kid from Puerto Rico was pitching a no-hitter in the last inning, leading 2-0, when his manager took him out— he had thrown 88 pitches, and was untouchable. But he was taken out of the game.

I was watching the game in a bar with no sound, so I’m assuming the guy removed his pitcher because if he hit 90 pitches, he was done pitching for several days.

What a gamble, and a losing one. The reliever quickly squandered the lead, and the Asian team won 3-2 in nine innings.

Good theater, but lot of stress for 11-13 year old kids. And the people who bet on them.

The Seattle Mariners have been red hot lately, but their dominance will be put to the test by the visiting Los Angeles Dodgers in interleague action. The Dodgers limped into Friday's game just 1-4 over their past five outings, but LHP Rich Hill could turn around their fortunes. The Dodgers are 4-1 over his past five starts, and 8-3 in his past 11 on the road against teams with a winning record. In addition, L.A. is 4-1 in his past five overall against winning teams, and 13-3 in his past 16 following a quality start last time out. The Dodgers are also 10-2 across his past 12 starts on a Saturday, for whatever that's worth. L.A. is also 11-5 in the past 16 interleague road games against a team with a winning overall record.

The M's will counter with RHP Erasmo Ramirez, but he has been mostly a disaster lately. Seattle is a dismal 3-14 across his past 17 starts against teams with a winning overall record, and 2-7 over his past nine outings overall. They're also 1-6 in his past seven at Safeco against teams with an overall winning mark. In addition, Seattle hasn't handled the NL West very well, winning just one of their past five heading into the series opener. They're also 1-4 in the past five at home against left-handed starting pitchers.

Total bettors might be pounding the 'under' on Saturday night. Heading into this series, the under was 4-0 in L.A.'s past four against right-handed starting pitchers, and 5-0-1 in their past six overall. The under has also cashed in eight of the past nine road outings, and 10 of their past 12 interleague battles. In addition, the under is 18-7-1 in L.A.'s past 26 against AL West opponents. However, the over is 11-5 in Hill's past 16 starts overall, and 7-3 in his past 10 against teams with a winning overall record. The under is also 4-0-1 in Seattle's past five interleague games at home against a left-handed starter, 4-0 in their past four against the NL West and 5-1 in their past six overall and against teams with a winning mark. The under is also 11-4 in their past 15 vs. LHP, and 3-0-1 in Ramirez's past four starts overall.

                            Looking Ahead

                            Saturday, Aug. 18

The A's will continue their crucial series against the visiting Astros, and they'll be up against LHP Dallas Keuchel. The Astros have won seven of Keuchel's past nine starts, and they're 20-8 over his past 28 on the road, while going 21-9 in his past 30 tries against AL West foes. The A's counter with RHP Trevor Cahill, who has been equally hot, as Oakland is 6-0 over his past six starts, and 8-2 in his past 10 games inside the division. The A's are also 6-2 in Cahill's past eight starts at home. In addition, Oakland has handled the bat well against southpaws, especially at the Coliseum, going 8-2 in their past 10 home games against a left-handed starter. The under is 26-9-4 in Cahill's past 39 starts at home, and 19-5-3 in his past 27 at home against winning teams. The under is 8-2-1 in Keuchel's past 11 on the road against winning sides, too.

After a righty-on-righty battle in Friday's game, the Marlins and Nationals turn to a pair of southpaws on Saturday. Marlins LHP Wei-Yin Chen has been horrific on the road, and he has the most stark contrast in splits in the majors. At home, he is 3-3 with a 2.05 ERA in 10 starts with a .194 opponent batting average. In nine road outings, he is 1-6 with an abysmal 10.27 ERA across 37 2/3 innings while the opposition is hitting .350 against him. It's no surprise 11 of his 16 homers allowed have come away from home, too.

Miami is 2-8 over Chen's past 10 on the road, and 1-8 in his past nine inside the division. In their past 19 tries against left-handed starting pitchers they have mustered just five wins, while going 1-7 in their past eight overall vs. LHP. Washington counters with LHP Tommy Milone, and the Nats are a respectable 7-2 across his past nine starts while going 6-1 in his past seven inside the division. They're also an impressive 6-0 over the past six against teams with a losing overall record. It's no surprise the Marlins are 1-4 in Chen's past five tries against the Nationals, either. The under is also 1-4 in his past five assignments vs. Washington.

                            Weather Report

The weather will move into the New York Metro area around the middle innings, so expect the Blue Jays and Yankees to dodge raindrops. There is a 45 percent or greater chance of thunderstorms from 2pm through the early-evening hours.

Winds will be the story in both Oakland and Cleveland, although the narrative will be the complete opposite. The Astros-A's game will feature winds blowing from 11-15 mph out to the right-center field power alley, while the O's-Indians will face a stuff 11-14 mph into the batter's face, coming in from right field.

In the Steel City, the Cubs-Pirates are likely to face a weather delay, and thunderstorms are forecasted through 10 pm ET. The Marlins-Nationals will see weather roll in around 8pm ET, but it's a 40 percent or less chance, so it's possible the tarpaulin never comes out.

The Rays and Red Sox will also be battling the weather, with thunderstorms forecast at 50 percent or great from first pitch through 10pm ET. The good news is that the weather seems to be confined to the east coast, as the Midwest and West Coast games look A-OK.

                            Sunday, Aug. 19

Reds RHP Luis Castillo will face the Giants, and the good news is he is at home. The Reds righty has posted a dismal 2-6 record and 6.18 ERA with a .290 opponent batting average in 13 starts away from Great American Ball Park over 62 2/3 innings, walking 23. At GBAP he is 4-4 with a 3.94 ERA over 64 innings, allowing just 17 walks while the opposition is hitting just .229. Giants LHP Andrew Suarez has posted a 2-4 record in both 10 starts at home, and a 2-4 record in 11 starts on the road. However, he has a 5.02 ERA in his 57 1/3 innings away from home, while posting a 3.79 ERA in 59 1/3 home frames.

Dodgers LHP Clayton Kershaw is starting to resemble his All-Star form after a trying and injury-marred first half. Since the break he is 2-1 with a 1.87 ERA across 33 2/3 innings with 30 strikeouts and just two walks across five outings. The pinpoint accuracy is there, and that's bad news for everyone else heading into the final six or seven weeks of the regular season. He'll also be making a daytime start in Seattle, and he is 1-1 with a 1.99 ERA over 31 2/3 innings across five outings under sunny skies.

In the Sunday evening game, Mets LHP Jason Vargas will square off against Phillies RHP Nick Pivetta. The under has cashed in Pivetta's past three outings, including three consecutive quality starts, and he has struck out six or more batters in each of his past six assignments. The under is also 3-1 in Pivetta's past four starts at Citizens Bank Park. Pivetta has held the opposition to a .239 batting average in 13 starts and one relief appearance at home, as opposed to a .282 average on the road across 52 1/3 innings in 11 starts. He has also had a higher strikeout rate at CBP, whiffing 93 over 73 1/3 innings at home, and just 60 punchouts on the road.

Vargas been terrible everywhere, regardless of venue. He is 2-8 with an 8.10 ERA and 1.78 WHIP in his 53 1/3 innings over 13 starts. It's a wonder he hasn't been designated for assignment yet, as most anyone can do better than these numbers. Until he is DFA'd, or at least bumped from the rotation, keep fading him. He is 1-4 with an 8.91 ERA over 33 1/3 innings across eight road starts, and the opposition is hitting a robust .331 against him with 16 walks, just 22 strikeouts and a whopping 10 homers allowed. Philly is going to tee off on him Sunday night in front of a national audience.

                            Weather Report

The Jays-Yankees and Rays-Red Sox games could be washed out with a steady chance of rain in the forecast for the entire afternoon. If the game in Boston does get underway, the winds will be blowing in from straightaway center field to home plate at a 13-16 mph clip, holding scores down.

The wind will also be blowing in at Progressive Field, anywhere from 10-13 mph into the face of the batters again.

In Atlanta, there is a 60 percent or great chance of thunderstorms from first pitch on through the early-evening hours, so it doesn't look good. The same holds true for the Marlins-Nationals game in D.C., with a 60 percent chance of thunderstorms early on, tailing off slightly to 50 percent by 6pm ET.

Winds will be the issue out west, the Angels and Rangers face a steady jetstream from 11-13 mph in from right field to home plate, while the winds will be blowing out for the Astros-A's, gusting 12-15 mph out to right field to aid left-handed hitting especially.

The Mets might be praying for rain based on Vargas' track record, but the weather is expected to pull out by mid-afternoon. There is still a 40 percent chance of rain for first pitch at 7pm ET, but it tails off as the evening progresses and this one should get in with minimal interruption. Sorry, Mets.

MLB Weekend Series Prices Best Bets

Although last week's plays in this piece split the board (Milwaukee lost, Oakland won), it was still a slightly profitable weekend given that both teams were underdogs in their respective matchups. At this time of year when there is a clear separation between contenders and teams left playing out the string, you can find some value in underdogs – especially when they are contenders themselves – although that might not be the case overall this weekend as there are some very large 'dogs in mismatches on paper.

This weekend we've got Tampa Bay, Baltimore, and Miami all catching +355 or more to win their respective series' on the road (vs Boston, Cleveland and Washington respectively). Those are not really worth considering either way because it's highly unlikely any of those 'dogs take two of three, but I'm not about to lay -400 or more with the overconfidence that it's basically “free money.” Losing just one of those -400 bets puts you back quite a few units with one big swoop and that's not something I'm looking to stress about at this time of the year.

Eliminating those matchups from consideration means there are just a few select series to break down, but there is still one underdog I'm backing this week, along with a road favorite trying to stay ahead of the pack in their division.

Houston Astros (-130) vs Oakland Athletics (+110)

This AL West series has huge playoff ramifications for both sides and you'd better believe the limping Houston Astros are going to try everything they can to stay ahead of both Oakland and Seattle in the AL West race. Houston visits both of those teams over the next week and in order to preserve their division lead (sits at two games), they'll need to grab at least two of three from the A's this weekend.

Although the Astros may not be the healthiest bunch offensively, their rotation sets up well for this weekend set with Charlie Morton, Dallas Keuchel, and Justin Verlander scheduled to start. Morton and the Astros are already laying -140 on Friday night and have even seen some slight reverse line movement in their favor. Keuchel and Verlander will likely open as sizeable road chalk as well, so having all three of those guys on your side and needing just two of them to come through at a -130 price isn't a bad option at all.

Secondly, the road team has dominated this matchup all year long between the two teams as the road side is 9-1 SU in their last 10 meetings, and that includes the Astros sweeping Oakland in their last two series here. Houston outscored Oakland 50-16 in those six games played in Oakland and while the A's are a much improved team since mid-June, they are still a young bunch that may not be completely ready for the intensity this series will likely bring.

While there is no denying just how sharp the A's have been the last 1.5 months or so, this is the time the defending champs go out and flex their muscles a bit – wounded or not – taking care of business and sending a message that the AL West still runs through them.

Best Bet: Houston to win the series (-130)

                              L.A Dodgers (-160) vs. Seattle Mariners (+135)

Speaking of AL West teams, the third party in that three-team race for a division crown are the Seattle Mariners and they host the Dodgers in an interleague matchup this weekend. Both teams are in chase mode in their respective divisions so wins mean plenty to both sides, and it's for that reason that this is a line that appears to be loaded with value on the home side.

I don't really see any legitimate reason why L.A should be laying -160 here other than the fact that on paper their pitching rotation appears to be better and are more well known. Having Clayton Kershaw pitch the finale probably has something to do with this inflated number, but the Dodgers are still a team searching for something as they've lost five of their last six overall. L.A hasn't scored more than four runs in any of those six contests, and given that the Mariners are a team that actually has a much better overall record than L.A this year (five more wins than the Dodgers), how can you not take the +135 price on the home side.

Similar to the Houston/Oakland series opener, Seattle has already seen some reverse line movement come in their favor for Friday's opener, and although it is that dreaded “first game back off a long road trip” for Seattle, they had Thursday off and they didn't exactly travel far in coming from Oakland. And while Seattle's interleague record (3-7 SU) may be another reason why oddsmakers have put all that chalk on the Dodgers backs this weekend, I still am not convinced it's worth 60 cents on the dollar. Seattle's got plenty to play for themselves being outside of both the AL West lead and the AL Wildcard race, and being 12 games over .500 at home, they are tough to ignore in this spot.

As far as the other series' are concerned this weekend, here's how I see them breaking down

*Number of games won in brackets

                              Miami (1) vs Washington (2)
San Francisco (1) vs Cincinnati (2)
Milwaukee (2) vs St Louis (1)
Toronto (1) vs NY Yankees (2)
Tampa Bay (1) vs Boston (2)
Kansas City (1) vs Chicago White Sox (2)
