    • Best and worst MLB starting pitchers to bet on in August
      Marc Lawrence

Since being traded away from Baltimore, this is the time of year Jake Arrieta is at his best. He might not throw as hard as he used to, but he still knows how to get hitter's out.

With the MLB trading deadline closed, and the NFL preseason whetting our pigskin palates, the month of August sets the table for the stretch run of the baseball season. The question is which pitchers can we count on to satisfy our tastes, and which ones figure to sour our stomachs? Take a look below.

Listed below are hurlers that have enjoyed a two-to-one or better success ratio in team-starts over the course of the last three seasons during the month of August. On the flip side, we've also listed pitchers that struggle in August, winning 33% percent or less of their team-start efforts. To qualify, pitchers must have made a minimum of 10 starts, with at least one start each August over the last three years. And for your convenience alongside each record we break down each pitcher’s greatest success or greatest failure rate either home (H) or away (A) within his good or bad month.

Note: * designates a categorical repeat appearance by this pitcher, maintaining status quo from last season’s August list.

I’ll be back next month with September’s Good Month Pitchers. Until then, make like legendary singer and songwriter Neil Diamond and enjoy the hot August nights.

      GOOD MONTH PITCHERS

      * Jake Arrieta, Philadelphia Phillies • 15-2 (8-1 A)

Since being traded away from Baltimore, this is the time of year Jake Arrieta is at his best. He might not throw as hard as he used to, but he still knows how to get hitter's out. He, along with Aaron Nola, will keep Philadelphia in the hunt for an NL East title. After giving up 23 homers last year, Arrieta has done a much better job keeping the ball in the yard with just 11 HRs allowed this season.

      Bartolo Colon, Texas Rangers • 13-5 (7-2 A)

Though Colon has enjoyed success in August, he was not 45 years old, playing in a small ballpark like Texas and on a bad team. It would be great to see him finish with a flourish, but the fact remains the Rangers are so pitching deficient, they have to depend on the veteran. Amazingly, Colon has played in the majors the same number of years the Braves Ronald Acuna Jr, has been alive (20).

      Danny Duffy, Kansas City Royals • 11-5 (7-1 H)

After a slow start, the K.C. lefthander had 2.89 ERA in May and June, But July rolled around and Duffy regressed and his ERA is approaching 5.00 again. His command has been awful, already with a career-high in walks for the season and on pace to match or surpass the 27 home runs he conceded two years ago. With this Royals team I do expect this month to be like those of the past for Duffy.

      * Corey Kluber, Cleveland Indians • 14-4 (8-1 H)

The Cleveland right-hander has been very good, but not quite as good as 2014 and 2017 when he won Cy Young's. The biggest reason why is a balky right knee, which has caused him to leave more pitches up than usual and is why he's already very close to a career-high in home runs allowed with two months remaining. Nevertheless, he is still one the best hurlers in baseball and with his experience and the Indians having a mostly favorable slate this month, the winning should continue.

      Rick Porcello, Boston Red Sox • 10-3 (6-1 H)

To this point, Rick Porcello's season has been a great deal like previous two. In 2016, Porcello won the Cy Young and was 22-4. Last year, the right-hander was completely the opposite and lost 17 games. This season he's 13-4 and often pitched like he did two seasons ago. But he's also left reminders of how bad he can be with a few incredibly bad performances this year. Expect Porcello to have a fine August, just keep in mind a stinker might also be included.

      BAD MONTH PITCHERS

      James Shields, Chicago White Sox • 5-12 (2-6 H)

It is really a shame to watch Shields end his career this way. The 36-year is on a team in the midst of rebuilding and at this point of his career he no longer has the needed separation in speed between his pitches to make his once feared change-up effective. Add in he's gone from 3-to-1 K/W ratio to 2-to-1 and it's not hard to imagine he and White Sox will keep losing games.

          Streaking and Slumping Starting Pitchers

          Streaking:
Jameson Taillon, Pittsburgh Pirates (7-8, 3.73 ERA, $100)

Hitting has made up a lot of the talk when it comes to the Pirates recent surge, but the pitching staff is doing their part as well. None more than big right-hander Jameson Taillon.

The 27-year-old has been dynamite over his last three starts, pitching to a 1.96 ERA and a 1.15 WHIP, while striking out 21 batters, compared to just four walks. Taillon hopes he can keep the Pirates rolling when they host the Cubs tonight. Pittsburgh is a slight -109 favorite.

          Slumping:
Steven Matz, New York Mets (5-8, 3.79 ERA, $202)

It's sounding like the Mets Big 3 starting pitchers aren't going anywhere today, in Matz case maybe it's because he's done nothing to help his trade value recently. Matz has a 6.23 ERA with a 1.44 WHIP over his last three starts. The lefty and the Mets are currently moderate +160 road underdogs for today's matchup against the Nationals.

          Big Sexy Consistency

Bartolo Colon takes the mound for Texas tonight and the ageless wonder has been the model of consistency this season, but that hasn’t meant good things for Rangers fans. The veteran right-hander has given three or more runs in 10 of his last 12 starts. In each those 12 starts he’s allowed at least five hits and seven or more in 10 of those 12 contests.

Take a hard look at the Diamondbacks Over 8.5 hits (-135) tonight.

          Birds Flying Over The Bay

The Blue Jays visit the A's in a matchup of teams taking an opposite approach to the deadline. The Jays are focusing on the future and unloading their tradeable assets, while the A's are making the push for the playoffs.

Besides a bit of a power outage in Colorado of all places the A's bats have been hot since the All-Star break and resumed that in Monday's 10-1 win in the series opener and get to face Sam Gaviglio in Game 2. The right-hander seems to be hitting a rookie wall according to his 7.13 ERA in his last four starts. Plus, the Jays bullpen is in shambles as they trade off their relievers and it could be worse by tonight. Toronto can also hit a bit. The Over 8.5 is worth a look.

          Full Nelson

The Phillies and Red Sox continue their battle of division leaders at Fenway Park tonight and starters Jake Arrieta and Drew Pomeranz may get a hand from the man behind the plate. That man is Jeff Nelson and the Under is 12-3 in the last 15 games he has been calling balls and strikes.

Nelson has seen a total of just 6.89 total runs scored per game and has a strike rate pf 62.9 percent in 2018. With at least one very good pitcher on the mound, the Under 10 has some value here.

MLB Preview - Milwaukee Brewers at Los Angeles Dodgers

The Milwaukee Brewers and Los Angeles Dodgers are both in the thick of a crowded National League playoff race. If they play well down the stretch, they should each qualify, but a lull could result in sitting home for the postseason. The stakes are high as the teams face off this week in Los Angeles.

While the teams have similar records, the Dodgers have the home field advantage and the more impressive roster, so they should enter this game as the favorite. Everyone expected Los Angeles to be here but Milwaukee has been a nice surprise thus far. It does not want to fall off down the stretch and a road win in this one would be another positive step.

However, it won’t be easy against a talented Dodgers team in MLB wagering.

The MLB Baseball game will be held at Dodger Stadium in Los Angeles, California at 10:10 p.m ET on Tuesday, July 31st.

We'll have MLB baseball odds at BookMaker.eu available for every game of the 2018 MLB season.

              Odds Analysis

The Brewers enter this matchup with a record of 61-47 on the season. Milwaukee is hot on the tail of the Cubs for first place in the National League Central. The Brewers have gone 28-26 on the road this season.

The Dodgers are 59-47 overall but their run-differential of plus-95 predicts good things ahead. Los Angeles has gone 28-24 at home and needs to improve on that mark down the stretch in order to hold off the Diamondbacks and Dodgers in the N.L. West.

Dodger Stadium is a pitcher’s park, which should be kept in mind when the run total is revealed in MLB odds.

              Probable Pitchers

The Brewers are expected to send veteran left-hander Wade Miley to the hill. He only has five starts on the season but has been very good with a 1-1 record and a 2.01 ERA. Miley has a career ERA of 4.35 and that is more indicative of his talent level than the job he has done this year in a small sample size. This is a tough matchup against a good Dodgers team.

Los Angeles will counter with Walker Buehler, who is 4-3 with a 3.90 ERA and a 1.10 WHIP. Buehler has given up five earned runs in two of his past three starts, but was previously impressive. It will be interesting to see what version of him is presented against the Brewers.

              Player To Watch

Manny Machado -- The Dodgers made one of the biggest midseason trades in the major leagues by adding the superstar infielder. Machado is a free agent at the end of the season so the Orioles dealt him, and Los Angeles is aiming to capitalize on the acquisition.

Machado is one of the best players in the majors. He is batting .314 this season with 25 homers, 69 RBIs and an OPS of .950. Machado has is hitting better than .300 with the Dodgers and figures to be a huge piece down the stretch as the Dodgers push for a long postseason run.

              Free MLB ATS Picks

The Brewers may have the better record but Los Angeles is the better team and gets this matchup at home. Take the Dodgers to come away with the win as they aim to finish atop the division. The Brewers are in good shape to grab a wild card but there are talented teams behind them so they can’t afford to let up down the stretch. Milwaukee will lose this one on the road in MLB odds.

MLB ATS Pick: Dodgers 4, Brewers 3

MLB Betting – Houston Astros at Seattle Mariners

The top two teams in the American League West continue their three-game series on Tuesday night, as the Houston Astros visit the Seattle Mariners in a game that can be seen on MLB Network. The Mariners have the second-best road record in the league, but the Mariners have been very good at home. The probable pitching matchup for Tuesday has Charlie Morton going against Mike Leake. Let’s look at the matchup and MLB picks.

                Houston Astros at Seattle Mariners
Date and Time: Tuesday, July 31, 2018, 10:10 p.m. ET
                Location: Safeco Field, Seattle, WA
                MLB Odds: Astros -150, O/U 8 over
Probable Pitchers: Charlie Morton vs. Mike Leake
                TV Coverage: MLB Network

The Astros have not played that well of late, and they are without one of their top players, as Jose Altuve is on the DL. The Astros have been good on the road, as they were 35-16 in their first 51 road games, with 22 games going over the total, 24 going under, with five pushes. They are averaging about 5 runs per game and giving up just over 3 runs per contest.

The Mariners were 34-19 in their first 53 home games, with 22 games going over the total, 29 going under, with two pushes. They are averaging 4.2 runs per game and giving up 4 runs per contest.

                Starting Pitchers

Morton is 11-2 on the season with a 2.89 ERA. He went six innings last time out against Colorado and gave up just one run and four hits. His previous two starts were not that great, as he allowed three runs against the A’s in just 4.1 innings and five runs against the White Sox in 5.2 innings. Even though Morton is 11-2 on the season, the Astros have lost his last two starts.

Leake is 8-6 with a 4.15 ERA. He went 6.1 innings last time out against San Francisco and gave up just two runs and four hits. Leake has been pretty good lately, as he has given up just three earned runs in his last 12.1 innings. He gave up seven hits and five runs in six innings earlier this season in a 7-1 loss to the Astros.

                Key Stats

The Astros were 8-1 in the last 9 meetings in Seattle before this series began. The Astros are 20-8 in their last 28 road games vs. a right-handed starter. The Astros are 39-18 in their last 57 vs. the American League West. The Astros are 0-4 in Morton’s last 4 starts vs. a team with a winning record. The Mariners are 20-7 in their last 27 home games vs. a right-handed starter. The Mariners are 5-2 in Leake’s last 7 home starts.

Looking at the total, the Under is 8-1-2 in the Astros last 11 road games. The Under is 4-1 in the Mariners last 5 home games. The Over is 4-1 in Leake’s last 5 starts vs. American League West. The Under is 7-2 in the last 9 meetings in Seattle.

                Astros vs. Mariners Picks

The Astros have been a really good road team this season and Morton has a gaudy record, but Houston has not played that well lately and Morton hasn’t been nearly as good as he was earlier this season. Leake has been solid for the Mariners this season and Seattle is a good home team. I lean a little bit to the Mariners in this contest. I also think the total is worth a strong look. The Astros are missing one of their top players in Altuve and I think they could struggle to score runs in this series against the Mariners.

Seattle is not a high scoring team to begin with, as they usually win low scoring games. It should be yet another close game and the Mariners have thrived this season in one run contests. I think the under is the best option for this game on Tuesday night and a parlay could also be worth a shot.

Astros vs. Mariners Pick: Mariners and Under
Astros vs. Mariners Score Prediction: Mariners 4, Astros 3

                  July 30, 2018

                  Week of July 30th

Last week I touched on the great streaky play of the Pittsburgh Pirates going into the week and how much value there was on them as visitors in Cleveland, and they went out and proved me right. The Pirates ended up extending that nine-game winning streak to 11 after beating Cleveland as +249 and +160 underdogs in Games 1 and 2, before dropping in the finale as +190 underdogs.

There was some nice units to be made if you kept riding Pittsburgh at least for one of those first two games, and it goes to show you how much current form can mean to teams at times.

This week it's back to a more macro look of the MLB betting markets and shining some light on some things bettors can hopefully use to their advantage during the final two months of the year.

                  Who's Hot

                  MLB 'Unders' Overall

There is obviously more than one way to dissect a title like that, but let's begin with this way. When you add up the O/U records from all 30 MLB teams this year and realize there have been 90+ more unders (numbers can vary based) then 'overs' overall, it's time to look a bit deeper. But when only eight of the 30 MLB teams in the league enter Monday's action with more 'over's than 'unders', you start to see that the league-wide epidemic of strikeout rates rising rapidly appears to have finally leaked into significant betting results as well.

The increased amount of strikeouts in today's game isn't the sole reason 2018 has been a great year for 'under' bettors, but they definitely don't hurt. Strikeouts are rally killers and can prevent really crooked numbers from getting posted. That's never what you want to see when you've got an 'over' bet in your pocket, especially when you get one runs or less from something like a bases loaded, nobody out situation. However, going even deeper into this league-wide trend, you'll see that umpires play a big part in all of these 'unders' as well.

Of the 89 MLB umpires that have been behind the dish for at least three games (the majority are in the 15-20 games behind the plate), 54 of them have negative units attached to their name for 'over' bettors. That's a 60% clip of umpires who don't churn out profit for you if you've got the 'over' for anyone one of their games, as only 36 of the 89 have actually seen the 'over' cash more times than the 'under' in games they've donned the umpire equipment behind the plate.

Strike zone size and consistency has long been a topic of conversation in baseball, but it looks as though it's starting to be an issue. Whether these umps are expanding the zone to help these pitchers out, calling games with a “floating,” inconsistent strike zone, or it's some combination of the two (plus other factors), these MLB totals continue to be in the formula of “look 'under' first and then breakdown the game from there.

And it goes to show you, that for all the handicappers out there that will endlessly break down starting pitching matchups, and their left/right splits etc, knowing who's calling the balls and strikes is probably more important to know.

                  Who's Not

MLB Division Leaders banking betting units

Coming into the 2018 season a lot of us had a pretty good idea on which teams would be playoff and ultimately championship contenders this year. There were the likes of Boston, New York, Cleveland, and Houston in the AL, while Washington, Chicago, and L.A. in the NL were expected to be among the top teams as well. And although there have been a few surprises in both leagues, lofty expectations combined with the expected result means that these division leaders – and all the wins they pile up – are far from the best bets in the league.

For example, if I had told you prior to the year starting that 10 days after the All-Star break we'd have Cleveland, Houston, and the L.A Dodgers all sitting with division leads there would be no surprise at all. Those teams were expected to dominate this year and compete for a championship and we may still be on that course. But if I added in the fact that Cleveland was -15.35 units, Houston was -6.4 units and L.A was -15.9 units at the same time as holding their respective division leads would you believe me?

Whether or not you would believe that, it's the reality we face entering this week as these teams have been some of the worst bets in the league based on price and value this entire season. The only team that's been worse than any of them that were expected to be good, are the struggling Washington Nationals who are -20.4 units on the year. The NL East is home to one (actually two) of those surprising stories with Philadelphia and Atlanta battling atop the division (both among the better + unit teams this year), so the Nationals units won/lost results aren't that surprising there.

Aside from those three division leaders and the surprise leaders in the NL East, we've got the Cubs leading the NL Central and at +0.4 units on the year and Boston by far and away leading the pack at +24.6 units this season. So outside of the Red Sox, betting on baseball's best teams blindly each night has actually been atrocious this year.

That speaks to the inflated numbers oddsmakers put out on these teams on a nightly basis – the Yankees just lost as a -405 favorite vs Kansas City on Friday, and Houston just got swept at home laying -200 or greater in every game vs Texas – and how many bettors will still back them on a nightly basis thinking it's free money. ML sports like baseball are all about finding the discrepancies in the price offered and it's just so rare to find any on baseball's top teams this late in the year.

These numbers on division leaders back that up, as these teams will continue to win and look like contenders in the “real” world of standings and playoff pictures. Just don't go betting your whole bankroll on one game thinking it's a guarantee, because you'll always be “overpaying” for wins when backing these teams and taking significant bankroll hits when they come up short.

                    • Nationals set team scoring record, rout Reyes, Mets 25-4
                      August 1, 2018

WASHINGTON (AP) In the highest-scoring game in franchise history, Daniel Murphy hit two early home runs and the Washington Nationals kept pouring it on against emergency reliever Jose Reyes and the New York Mets in a 25-4 rout Tuesday night.

Trea Turner, who apologized before the game to his teammates for homophobic and racially insensitive tweets he sent several years ago, had four of Washington's 26 hits. Pitcher Tanner Roark (5-12) hit a three-run double during a seven-run first inning.

The Nationals set the team scoring mark dating to their days as the Montreal Expos in 1969. It was the Mets' most-lopsided loss in their 57-season history, worse than a 26-7 pounding by Philadelphia in 1985.

Reyes made the first pitching appearance of his career, and the 35-year-old infielder got tagged for home runs by Matt Adams and Mark Reynolds in a six-run eighth. Throwing a fastball in the mid-80s mph and a curve in the upper 40s, Reyes gave up five hits and walked two.

Reyes also plunked Ryan Zimmerman with a soft toss. After getting hit in the leg, Zimmerman playfully faked a charge toward the mound, drawing a laugh from Reyes, who wore one of ace Jacob deGrom's gloves on the mound.

The game got so out of hand, Mets television announcers Keith Hernandez, Ron Darling and Gary Cohen took turns reading verbatim from the team's media guide in the late innings - the SNY network played the theme from ''Masterpiece Theatre'' in the background.

Steven Matz (5-9) got only two outs and allowed seven runs in the shortest start of his career.

                      PIRATES 5, CUBS 4

PITTSBURGH (AP) - Gregory Polanco hit his team-leading 19th home run, Francisco Cervelli added his 10th of the season and Pittsburgh finished off a frantic trade deadline day with a victory.

Hours after trading for Texas closer Keone Kela and Tampa Bay starter Chris Archer to give their postseason hopes a jolt, the Pirates won for the 16th time in 20 games by getting to Jon Lester (12-4) in the middle innings and holding on late.

Polanco's solo homer in the eighth gave Pittsburgh a two-run cushion. The Pirates needed it after closer Felipe Vazquez gave up a single to pinch-hitter David Bote leading off the top of the ninth and Addison Russell followed with a shot to the gap in right-center that scored Bote.

Russell sped to third on the play and was initially ruled safe, but the call was overturned upon review. Vazquez retired the next two batters to pick up his 24th save in 28 opportunities.

Jameson Taillon (8-8) allowed three runs on seven hits in 6 2/3 innings of work, his lone mistake an offspeed pitch to Javy Baez in the fourth that Baez turned into a three-run homer that tied the game.

                      YANKEES 6, ORIOLES 3

NEW YORK (AP) - Masahiro Tanaka pitched six scoreless innings to extend his unbeaten streak to 13 starts, Miguel Andujar hit a three-run homer and New York beat Baltimore after the veteran-shedding Orioles dealt away three more players.

Coming off a three-hit shutout of Tampa Bay, Tanaka found his command after a 31-pitch first inning and limited the Orioles to a pair of singles and a double. Tanaka (9-2) struck out eight and walked two, lowering his ERA to 2.00 over his last five starts. He is 7-0 in 13 starts since an April 17 loss against Miami.

Baltimore (32-75), coming off its first three-game winning streak since mid-May, traded infielder Jonathan Schoop to Milwaukee before the game for infielder Jonathan Villar and a pair of prospects, and dealt pitchers Kevin Gausman and Darren O'Day to Atlanta for four prospects and $2.5 million in international signing bonus allotment.

Yefry Ramirez (1-4), coming off his first big league win, allowed all six runs and lasted five innings.

Aroldis Chapman struck out the side for the second straight game and got his 29th save in 30 chances, his 21st in a row.

                      PHILLIES 3, RED SOX 1

BOSTON (AP) - Jake Arrieta struck out seven in seven strong innings and Philadelphia snapped a four-game slide.

The Phillies earned a split in a two-game visit to Boston despite leaving 13 on base and going 1 for 8 with runners in scoring position.

Arrieta (9-6) allowed only one run and six hits to finish July 4-0 in six starts. Tommy Hunter pitched a perfect eighth and Seranthony Dominguez closed it out for his 11th save, although he did make it interesting by walking J.D. Martinez and hitting Xander Bogaerts with a pitch to open the ninth.

Drew Pomeranz (1-5) threw five innings and held the Phillies to two runs and three hits, but hurt himself with four walks and two hit batters.

                      INDIANS 6, TWINS 2

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) - Jose Ramirez and Edwin Encarnacion combined to drive in five runs and Trevor Bauer earned his 10th win.

One day after hitting a pair of homers against the Twins, Ramirez's bat stayed hot at Target Field. He drove in a run with a double in the third inning and added an RBI single in the fifth as part of a three-hit night.

Bauer (10-6) went 6 1/3 innings for Cleveland and gave up two runs on four hits. It was the first time all season Bauer issued more walks (4) than strikeouts (3).

The Twins started Ehire Adrianza at second base after trading Brian Dozier earlier in the day to the Los Angeles Dodgers. Dozier had spent seven seasons in Minnesota. Adrianza was hitless in two at-bats before being pinch hit for in the ninth.

Kyle Gibson (5-8) gave up three runs on five hits in six innings to earn his second loss in his last three starts.

                      BRAVES 11, MARLINS 6

ATLANTA (AP) - Kolby Allard, supported by a 19-hit attack that included three home runs, won his major league debut.

Kurt Suzuki hit a three-run double in Atlanta's five-run fourth. Ronald Acuna Jr. drove in two runs with three hits, including a leadoff homer in the first. Nick Markakis added a two-run homer and Johan Camargo also homered.

Allard (1-0), a 2015 first-round draft pick, allowed five runs, four earned, on nine hits and two walks in five-plus innings. Luke Jackson pitched three perfect innings with four strikeouts.

Dan Straily (4-5) allowed eight runs, five earned, on 11 hits in 3 2/3 innings.

                      GIANTS 3, PADRES 2, 10 INNINGS

SAN DIEGO (AP) - Brandon Crawford singled in the go-ahead run with two outs in the 10th inning and San Francisco got seven strong innings from rookie right-hander Dereck Rodriguez to give San Diego its seventh straight loss.

Andrew McCutchen homered for the Giants, who swept the two-game series and won their third straight game.

Evan Longoria tripled leading off the 10th against Phil Maton (0-2) and scored on Crawford's single to right.

Tony Watson (4-4) pitched a perfect ninth for the win, and Will Smith pitched the 10th for his sixth save.

                      TIGERS 2, REDS 1

DETROIT (AP) - Matthew Boyd allowed four hits in eight scoreless innings, and Niko Goodrum homered in the fourth to lift Detroit.

Homer Bailey (1-8) retired his first 11 batters before Goodrum went deep for his 10th home run of the year. The Tigers never gave up the lead. Boyd struck out seven and walked one before being lifted after 105 pitches.

Shane Greene allowed a run in the ninth but held on for his 22nd save in 25 chances.

Boyd (6-9) won his second straight start after going seven in a row without a victory.

                      ROCKIES 6, CARDINALS 3

ST. LOUIS (AP) - Charlie Blackmon and Carlos Gonzalez each went deep, Jon Gray pitched into the eighth inning and Colorado beat St. Louis.

Gray (9-7) struck out five over 7 1/3 innings, helping Colorado finish the month 17-6. Gray allowed three runs, two earned, with four hits and two walks. Wade Davis got his 31st save in 35 opportunities with a 1-2-3 ninth inning.

Chasen Shreve, making his first appearance for St. Louis since coming over in a July 28 trade with the Yankees, gave up a double to Gerardo Parra.

                      Jack Flaherty (4-6) pitched 5 1/3 innings.

                      RAYS 10, ANGELS 6

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (AP) - After making a series of trades just before the non-waiver trade deadline, Tampa Bay broke through with a seven-run inning and beat Los Angeles despite Mike Trout's 30th home run.

Trout's homer, which came off Ryan Yarbrough in the seventh inning, made him the second major leaguer to hit 30 home runs and steal 20 bases in a season three times before the age of 26. The only other player to do it was Willie Mays.

Yarbrough (10-5) became the first rookie to win 10 games this season despite giving up six runs on nine hits in five innings. He took over in the second inning after Rays starter Ryne Stanek pitched the first.

Carlos Gomez had two of the Tampa Bay's six hits in a seven-run fourth inning off Angels starter Tyler Skaggs (8-7). That inning left the Rays with a 10-1 lead.

                      ROYALS 4, WHITE SOX 2

CHICAGO (AP) - Ryan O'Hearn hit a two-run homer in his major league debut, helping Danny Duffy and Kansas City beat Chicago.

Brett Phillips also hit a two-run shot for last-place Kansas City, which had dropped four of five. Duffy (7-9) pitched 5 2/3 scoreless innings, rebounding nicely from a rocky start against Detroit.

Matt Davidson hit a two-run shot in the seventh for his eighth homer against the Royals this season. But Tim Hill got one out, Jason Hammel worked a rocky eighth and Wily Peralta finished for his sixth save.

O'Hearn bounced to first in his first at-bat in the second. He came up again with one out and a runner on first in the fifth, and drove a 1-0 pitch from James Shields (4-13) over the wall in right.

                          Wednesday’s List of 13: Mid-week musings…….

                          13) Monday night was a weird baseball night; Brewers-Dodgers had a 23-minute power outage in Chavez Ravine, while in Phoenix, a haboob (dust storm) blew thru the desert and caused the lights to go out at Chase Field for a while at the Rangers-Diamondbacks game.

I had to look up this “haboob” thing; it is like a weather front going thru, except it is in a hot, dry area and it has a ton of wind/dust. You learn something every day.

                          12) During the delay at Dodger Stadium, Cowboys’ coach Jason Garrett was sitting with Tommy Lasorda- looked like they were talking about how different pitches are gripped. Garrett was holding a baseball while they talked.

                          11) NBA is the first major American sports league to sign an official betting sponsor.

Commissioner Adam Silver announced Tuesday that the league has a deal with MGM that will give the gaming company rights to use league highlights, names, logos and its direct data feed, as well as exclusively market itself as the official gaming partner of the NBA and WNBA.

People bet on the WNBA? Wow. If I could accurately predict how women will react to certain situations, I wouldn’t spend 80% of my life writing on index cards. (Its a joke!!!!)

                          10) Guy named Charles Robinson covers the NFL for Yahoo; he posted this on Twitter Monday:

“I’ve been very skeptical of Sean McVay supposedly having a photographic memory. When we were talking this week, he recalled our conversation from one year ago and exactly where we were standing when we had it. I’m not memorable. It was weird.”

The Rams’ head coach has a very good memory.

                          9) News Item of the Week: “Police are looking for a trio of thieves who stole a shark from the San Antonio Aquarium over the weekend by stuffing it into a stroller.”

Um, why would you steal a shark?

                          8) Cubs’ P Kyle Hendricks has allowed 10 first inning home runs this season; no one else has allowed more than eight.

                          7) Because of the Seattle Mariners’ trades this weekend/Monday, their AAA farm team in Tacoma had only nine position players available for Monday night’s game, and three of those were catchers. Managing in the minor leagues can be challenging.

                          6) Monday night in Boston, Aaron Nola and David Price both went 8 innings, only the 4th major league game this season (27th in last 3 years) where both starters went 8+ innings.

By way of contrast, in 1988, there were 169 such games.

                          5) Baseball doings- there were lot of trades Tuesday:
                          — Red Sox put Chris Sale (shoulder) on the DL
                          — JA Happ has hand, foot, mouth disease, the same viral infection Noah Syndergaard has.
                          — Cincinnati Reds traded Adam Duvall to Braves for P’s Lucas Sims, Matt Wisler and OF Preston Tucker.
                          — Red Sox traded for 2B Ian Kinsler, giving up their #19 and #23 prospects.
                          — Pirates acquired reliever Keone Kela from Texas in exchange for two players to be named later.
                          — Pirates acquired Chris Archer for prospects OF Meadows/P Glasnow.
                          — Toronto 2B Lourdes Gurriel is out 2-to-6 weeks. He has a high ankle sprain and a Grade 1 left knee sprain.

                          4) Detroit Tigers are only team that hasn’t made a trade this season.

                          3) Cubs’ 1B Anthony Rizzo got on base 34 times in his first 15 games batting leadoff.

                          2) Nationals 25, Mets 4— Washington led 10-0 in the 2nd inning. Wilmer Flores left early with dehydration and dizziness, thats how long he was out on the field.

                          1) NFL exhibition games actually start tonight; Ravens-Bears from Canton. Chicago is only team that hasn’t signed its first round draft pick (LB Roquan Smith).

                          • LEADING OFF: Dozier, Hamels, Archer settle in, Springer hurt
                            July 31, 2018

A look at what's happening around the majors Wednesday:

                            STARTING OUT

Brian Dozier could make his first start for the Los Angeles Dodgers when they host Milwaukee. The power-hitting Minnesota second baseman was traded Tuesday, shortly before the deadline for making deals without waivers. The defending NL champion Dodgers have revamped their infield in the last two weeks, also getting star Manny Machado.

                            MOVING DAY

Chris Archer, Jonathan Scoop and Wilson Ramos were part of the 15 trades made Tuesday as contenders prepped for the playoff race. Brandon Kintzler will celebrate his 34th birthday finishing the move from Washington to the Cubs - on his birthday last year, he was going from Minnesota to the Nationals.

                            HURTING

Astros center fielder George Springer will see how his sore left shoulder is feeling. The World Series MVP jarred himself making a diving try, hoping to cut off a ball Tuesday night at Seattle. Houston already has star infielders Jose Altuve and Carlos Correa on the disabled list.

                            WELCOME

Cole Hamels makes his first start for the Cubs when they play Pittsburgh at PNC Park. The 34-year-old lefty was 5-9 with a 4.72 ERA when Texas traded the four-time All-Star and former World Series MVP to Chicago last week. The Pirates have won 16 of 20.

                            CHECK HIM

The Yankees will monitor pitcher J.A. Happ, a day after the New York newcomer was diagnosed with hand, foot and mouth disease. The illness is an infection condition that often affects young children. General manager Brian Cashman said the team's doctors aren't certain how Happ caught it. The 35-year-old lefty was acquired from Toronto last week, and he won his Yankees debut on Sunday.

Happ is scheduled to start Saturday against the AL East-leading Red Sox at Fenway Park. If he can't pitch, newly acquired Lance Lynn or Luis Cessa could fill in.

                            FEELING BETTER

Mets star Noah Syndergaard is expected to come off the disabled list - he's been out while recovering from hand, foot and mouth disease. Syndergaard (6-1, 2.89 ERA) is set to pitch at Washington. The Nationals set a franchise scoring record and handed the Mets their most-lopsided loss with a 25-4 rout Tuesday night.

                            TRY AGAIN

Royals righty Jakob Junis (5-11, 5.06 ERA) faces the Chicago White Sox on the road. He is 0-8 with a 6.98 ERA in his past nine starts. In his last outing, he threw a fastball that hit Aaron Judge and broke the Yankees slugger's wrist, putting him out for three weeks.

                              * Jake Arrieta, Philadelphia Phillies • 15-2 (8-1 A)

                              * Corey Kluber, Cleveland Indians • 14-4 (8-1 H)

Remember the 3 G's Gambling, Golf, Girls not in any particular order.....
