      Bieber Fever

The Cleveland Indians have a strong pitching staff, including two-time Cy Young winner Corey Kluber, All-Star Trevor Bauer, fireballer Carlos Carrasco and up-and-comer Mike Clevinger. However, the city of Cleveland is starting to get Bieber Fever, but it's not the bubble gum pop singer that is the object of their affection. On the surface, Bieber's 4.80 ERA nad 1.44 WHIP isn't terribly impressive. However, those numbers are skewed dramatically from his most recent outing when he allowed seven earned runs while retiring just five batters against the Pirates on July 24. He entered that start 5-1 with a 3.53 ERA. He has registered 44 strikeouts over 45 innings across his eight appearances.

The Indians enter Monday's game at Target Field with an 8-2 record over their past 10 road games, and they're 4-1 in their past five on the road against teams with a winning overall mark. Better yet, they're 4-0 in Bieber's past four outings against American League Central foes, while going 4-0 in his past four against losing teams and 6-2 in his past eight outings overall. The Indians have built their huge division lead by picking on the weak, and many of those weaklings reside in the AL Central. They're 63-22 in their past 85 against losing sides, and 51-17 across their past 68 inside the division. Facing the Twinkies at Target will be a challenge, as Minnesota is 10-2 in their past 10 at home and 8-2 in the past 10 home games against a right-handed starting pitcher. However, the Twins have come up empty in 11 of their past 15 attempts against teams with a winning overall mark.

      Looking Ahead

      Monday, July 30

The Braves will welcome the Marlins to SunTrust Park for a new series, but Julio Teheran has had his issues against Miami this season. He is 0-1 with a 12.54 ERA across two outings vs. Miami, allowing 15 runs - 13 earned - and 14 hits with seven strikeouts over 9 1/3 innings while the Marlins are hitting .350 against him. Justin Bour has been particularly hard on him, going 7-for-17 (.412) with a double, a triple and a homer with five RBI and eight walks while posting a 1.365 OPS in hs career against Teheran. Derek Dietrich has launched a pair of homers with five RBI, posting a .296 (8-for-27) record with a .987 OPS. The good news for Teheran is that he is up against Wei-Yin Chen. Miami has won just twice over Chen's past nine on the road, and they're 1-6 in his past seven against the NL East. The 'over' has dominated in his series, going 5-0 in Teheran's past five at home against the Marlins, and 8-2 in his past 10 overall against them. The over is also a perfect 6-0 in Chen's past six starts against the Braves.

The Astros and Mariners will square off in a key AL West series, with Seattle lurking just four games behind Houston for first place. The M's received an unexpected gift from the cellar-dwelling Texas Rangers, who became the first team this season to sweep the Astros over the weekend. The Astros turn to Gerrit Cole to stop the slide. Houston is 17-4 over Cole's past 21 outings, and they're a perfect 7-0 in his past seven while working on five days of rest. The Astros are also 5-0 over his past five road starts against a team with a winning overall record, 9-2 in his past 11 on the road and 6-1 in his past seven against AL West foes.

The Brewers and Dodgers do battle in a potential postseason preview. The Brewers will use RHP Freddy Peralta against RHP Kenta Maeda. Milwaukee heads into the game with a stellar 20-8 mark in their past 28 attempts against NL West clubs, while posting an impressive 5-2 mark in the past seven overall. They haven't been terribly impressive on the road, however, going 3-7 in their past 10 against right-handed starting pitchers, while posting just four win in their past 14 on the road. They're also 3-9 in the past 12 road outings vs. RHP. L.A. is finally living up to expectations after a bumpy start, going 6-1 in their past seven at home, 5-1 in the past six against NL Central clubs and 6-0 in their past six at home vs. RHP.

      Weather Report

It's the summer in Georgia, so you can expect scattered thunderstorms to pop up with the daytime heating most every day. Monday will be no exception, as there is a 40 percent or greater chance of t-storms from 7pm-9pm ET, tapering off as the evening goes on. Expect to see the tarp at least once on Monday in the ATL. That's the only weather concern on an abbreviated night of action in MLB.

      Tuesday, July 31

The Giants head south to battle the Padres on Tuesday afternoon. San Fran enters the week with an ugly 2-6 mark over their past eight road outings, while going just 3-8 in the past 11 road starts against a left-handed starting pitcher. Rookie Dereck Rodriguez has been the stopper for the Giants lately, however, as San Francisco is 6-1 over his past seven outings, including a perfect 4-0 in his past four on four days of rest. The Padres have managed just three victories in their past 11 against a team with a losing overall record. San Diego is also a dismal 1-10 in the past 11 at home vs. RHP, and 0-4 in their past four overall against righties. They have posted victories in just three of their past 17 at Petco Park, while going 1-5 in Clayton Richard's past six overall. San Francisco has won four of the past five in this series, but they're just 1-5 in the past six trips to San Diego.

Two red-hot clubs meet in the Steel City when the Cubs and Pirates tangle on the banks of the Allegheny River. Chicago has won each of the past six on the road when Jon Lester starts, while going 52-22 over his past 74 starts overall. In addition, Chicago is 23-4 in his past 27 starts in Game 1 of a new series. They're also 5-1 in his past six against winning teams. The Bucs will not be pushovers, however, as they have won 13 of their past 16 and 12 of the past 14 against NL Central opponents. Pittsburgh has won eight in a row at home against teams with an overall record, too, while going 10-1 in their past 11 overall against winnings sides. Jameson Taillon hasn't been terribly dominant, however, as the Bucs are just 3-7 over his past 10 against winning teams, and 1-4 over his past five starts at PNC.

The Blue Jays take on the A's in Oakland, and Toronto hasn't been particularly good on the road this season. They're just 8-17 in the past 25 road outings while going just 4-11 in the past 15 contests against AL West foes. They have won just once in the past five against winning teams, while going 1-4 in Sam Gaviglio's past five assignments away from home. The A's have been on fire lately, going 27-10 in their past 37 overall, while winning eight of the past 10 at home. They're also 11-2 in the past 13 at home against losing teams, and they're 13-6 in the past 19 against AL East foes. Oakland has had success with Trevor Cahill on the mound, too, going 6-2 in his past eight against teams with a losing overall mark.

      Weather Report

The O's and Yankees will dodge the raindrops in the middle innings and on, as the weather forecast calls for a 40 percent of thunderstorms from 8pm ET through the overnight. The weather pulls out of Washington D.C. by the middle innings, so the Mets and Nationals could be delayed, but they'll definitely get their game in. When they do play, there will be a jetstream blowing 10-13 mph from home plate to left field.

The Cubs and Pirates will also face a pretty strong possibility of thunderstorms, with the weather clearing around 11pm ET. Since these are divisional foes, and a make-up game is easier to schedule, if the weather gets to be too much a postponement wouldn't be a surprise. Mother Nature is about the only thing that can cool these two clubs off.

In Motown, the Reds and Tigers are also staring a potential delay or postponement in the face. The rain chances are over 50 percent through 11pm ET. They'll also battle those summertime popcorn storms in Atlanta again, with chances over 40 percent all day long. Everyone else will be dry, but the Jays and A's face a 12-15 mph wind current from home plate to the right-center field power alley.

MLB Betting Report: Top Series of the Week

With the trade deadline landing on the final day of the month, we are sure to see some high drama play out over the next couple of days. We may see teams put themselves over the top in the race for the World Series by swinging a deal, while others will signal their intent to rebuild by conducting a fire sale of sorts.

It seems as though the schedule makers know what was coming, as the MLB calendar for the week is one that is front-loaded with some outstanding series. Monday and Tuesday are when these great tilts get started, and while those will be the meetings that we will focus on here, we will be back later in the week with some picks for the weekend.

Philadelphia Phillies vs Boston Red Sox

Every now and again we get an interleague series that is considered an absolute must watch, and that is exactly what we will get to kick off the week. It will only be a 2-game series, but it has all the makings of a beauty. You have the up and coming Philadelphia Phillies, who are currently riding a lead atop the NL East, heading into Boston to face a Red Sox team that is arguably the best in baseball right now. These two games will absolutely not settle the argument about whether the NL or the AL is better, but it will serve as an opportunity for each of these teams to make a strong case for their respective leagues.

            Houston Astros vs Seattle Mariners

The defending World Series champions have picked up where they left off last year, building a 5-game lead in the AL West. They look as though they are going to be tough to oust from the top of the division, but the Mariners can certainly make things interesting by winning this series. Seattle are on a little bit of a skid at the moment, a slump that has opened the door for the Oakland A’s in third. Not only do Seattle need something from this series to tighten up the race, they need some wins in order to keep those pesky A’s at bay.

            Milwaukee Brewers vs L.A. Dodgers

If you are a fan of division races that go right down to the wire, then the National league is the place to be right now. In the Central Division, the Milwaukee Brewers refuse to go away, as they are now sitting just a half game back of the Chicago Cubs for the lead. In the West, the big-spending Dodgers have a game and a half lead at the top, but just like last season, they have both the Diamondbacks and Rockies chasing them down for the lead. It goes without saying that both the Brewers and Dodgers need this series to continue keeping pace in their respective divisions.

New York Yankees vs Boston Red Sox

While most of the bigger series this week start at the beginning of the week, we do have a great one lined up starting on Thursday. The Boston Red Sox have forged ahead in the race for the AL East, but this is a battle that is far from over. There is still a lot of baseball to be played and the Yankees can once again make things interesting by getting some wins in this series. You hate to call a race over this early, but if the Red Sox can dominate this on, they might well be put of sight.

MLB Preview - Houston Astros at Seattle Mariners

The Houston Astros are clearly the best team in the American League West, but they have yet to shake the Mariners and A’s. Houston can stretch its lead in a series this week against Seattle. Houston may only be four games better in the standings but has the superior personnel by a longshot.

The Mariners have had great close-game luck this season, which has kept them in position for a playoff berth despite a negative run-differential on the season. Seattle is at home which should make this a competitive matchup but the Astros have the superior offense and will aim to ride those bats to the win.

Seattle isn’t nearly as talented as the Astros but is right in the mix for the division title and a win in this one would draw it closer in MLB wagering.

The MLB Baseball game will be held at Safeco Field in Seattle, Washington at 10:10 p.m ET on on Monday, July 30th.

We'll have MLB baseball odds at BookMaker.eu available for every game of the 2018 MLB season.

              Odds Analysis

The Astros are better overall but each side has an elite pitcher on the hill and Houston is on the road, which mitigates its advantage. This could have close odds but look for the Astros to be the favorite.

Houston is 67-40 overall with a record of 35-16 on the road. The Astros have shown the ability to win anywhere with their dominant roster. The Mariners are 62-43 overall and have gone 34-19 at home this season and will aim to keep that up in MLB odds.

              Probable Pitchers

The Astros are projected to send Gerrit Cole to the mound. He is 10-2 with a sparkling 2.54 ERA on the season and a WHIP of 0.98. Cole had to pitch at Coors Field in Colorado last time out but still performed well, giving up only two runs in 6.1 innings of work with nine strikeouts. Cole had 186 strikeouts in 134.2 innings pitched so his success has been no fluke. The Mariners could have a tough time against him.

The Mariners will counter with James Paxton, who is 8-4 with a 3.70 ERA on the year. Paxton has been on the disabled list with a back injury but is scheduled to come off for this game. He was expected to pitch last week but he showed discomfort while warming up and the return had to be delayed. If Paxton suffers a setback it would greatly affect the odds. Paxton has 155 strikeouts in 119.1 innings pitched this year so he also has elite stuff.

              Key Stat

              179. That’s the Astros’ positive run-differential, which is the best in the major leagues. It bodes well for the future as run-differential can often be a better predictor of success than win-loss record. Houston is the defending World Series champion and has everything needed to make another deep playoff run.

While the Mariners are within striking distance in the standings currently they are heavy underdogs to pass the Astros in large part because they have a negative-3 run-differential despite a solid record. Seattle should be more concerned with staying ahead of the Oakland A’s for the second wild card spot than catching the Astros in the division.

              Free MLB ATS Picks

The Mariners should be able to stick around because Paxton is a good pitcher and the team is at home, but the Astros are such a good team they are tough to bet against. Take Houston to capture a close one, putting a dent into Seattle’s year-long success in one-run games.

Consider the “over” as there could be more runs than expected late in MLB betting lines.

MLB ATS Pick: Astros 5, Mariners 4

MLB Betting – Philadelphia Phillies at Boston Red Sox

A matchup of division leaders is set for Monday night on ESPN, as the Philadelphia Phillies visit the Boston Red Sox. There is a real chance this could be a World Series preview, as the Phillies lead the National League East, while the Red Sox lead the American League East.

The Phillies are expected to send their top pitcher, Aaron Nola to the mound on Monday, while the Red Sox counter with David Price. Let’s look at the matchup and MLB picks.

Philadelphia Phillies at Boston Red Sox
Date and Time: Monday, July 30, 2018, 7:10 p.m. ET
                Location: Fenway Park, Boston, MA
MLB Odds: Red Sox -145, O/U 9 under
Probable Pitchers: Aaron Nola vs. David Price
                TV Coverage: ESPN

The Phillies have not been that great on the road this season, as they were 24-28 in their first 52 road games, with 22 games going over the total, 27 going under, with three pushes. They are averaging about 4.5 runs per game and giving up about 3.9 per contest.

The Red Sox were 36-14 in their first 50 home games, with 23 games going over, 24 going under the total, with three pushes. They are averaging 5.3 runs per game and giving up 3.5 per contest.

                Starting Pitchers

Nola is 12-3 on the season with a 2.42 ERA. He went just five innings last time out against the Dodgers and gave up three runs and five hits. That is about as bad as it gets for Nola. He has failed to complete six innings this season in just four of his 21 starts. Nola has an opposing batter average of .199 this season.

Price is 11-6 with a 4.17 ERA. He was really good in his last start, as he allowed no runs and five hits in 6.1 innings against Detroit. Keep in mind that he did throw 14 pitches against the Orioles last time out, but that game was called due to rain. Price is 2-0 with a 3.57 ERA in his last three starts.

                Key Stats

The Phillies are 3-14 in the last 17 meetings in Boston. The Phillies are 4-0 in their last 4 vs. American League East. The Phillies are 2-5 in their last 7 road games vs. a left-handed starter. The Phillies are 14-3 in Nola’s last 17 starts. The Red Sox are 41-11 in their last 52 interleague games vs. a right-handed starter. The Red Sox are 39-13 in their last 52 vs. the National League East. The Red Sox are 5-0 in Price’s last 5 home starts.

Looking at the total, the Under is 5-0-1 in the Phillies last 6 vs. the American League East. The Over is 5-2 in the Phillies last 7 games vs. a left-handed starter. The Under is 5-1 in Nola’s last 6 starts overall. The Under is 8-2 in Nola’s last 10 road starts. The Under is 10-2 in the Red Sox last 12 home games vs. a right-handed starter. The Under is 7-3 in the Red Sox last 10 overall. The Over is 3-1-1 in Price’s last 5 starts overall. The Under is 3-0-2 in the last 5 meetings between the Phillies and Red Sox.

                Phillies vs. Red Sox Picks

This is an interesting game on Monday night on ESPN, as you can make a case for taking either team. There is no question the Phillies have the pitching edge with Nola going against Price, but the Red Sox are an excellent home team and they have simply owned the Phillies in Boston. The concern for me in taking Boston would be that Price is not on his regular rotation. Pitchers are creatures of habit and Price is not on his normal schedule, as the rainout screwed things up for him. Perhaps he will be fine with the extra rest, but I think it could take him a start to get back on track. I will take the Phillies to get the road win on Monday night.

Phillies vs. Red Sox Pick: Philadelphia Phillies & Under
Phillies vs. Red Sox Score Prediction: Phillies 5, Red Sox 3

                  Monday MLB Best Bet
                  Milwaukee Brewers vs L.A. Dodgers

While some teams are using Monday as a day off in the MLB world, bettors have some solid games to break down from the nine-game slate. We've got a handful of late night contests as well with a lot of the league's West Coast teams back at home, and it's the return home of one of those squads that I'm interested in tonight.

The L.A. Dodgers have now had about 10 days with Manny Machado in the fold, and considering they are 6-4 SU in those 10 games, the results have been pleasant so far. But tonight is Machado's home debut as L.A. returns home after a 10-game road trip that began with them taking two of three from tonight's opponent: the Milwaukee Brewers.

Will L.A. continue those winning ways against the Brew Crew and give Machado his first home win?

Odds: Milwaukee (+135) vs L.A. (-145); Total set at 7.5

Neither of tonight's starting pitchers in Freddy Peralta (Milwaukee) or Kenta Maeda (L.A.) pitched in that series right out of the All-Star break a couple of weeks ago, but both have been on the wrong end of their one start since the break.

Peralta lasted six innings against the Nationals in a 7-3 Milwaukee loss, while Maeda had a much better day in Philadelphia after leaving in the 7th in a 4-4 tie, but L.A. ended up being on the losing side of that one when Philly walked it off in the 16th inning. So both guys would love to get a bounce back win, and with both teams in the thick of their respective division races, every win from here on in is quite critical for both clubs. However, in terms of the overall situation here, it's hard not to like one more than the other to get the job done tonight.

To start, there is a bit of a revenge angle in play for Milwaukee tonight as they haven't forgotten about those two home losses to this team out of the break and would love to get the season series back to even before Tuesday's Game 2. They just took three of four from San Francisco over the weekend, scoring 5+ runs in three of the four games, so it's not like good current form isn't there. Milwaukee has also won five of seven since losing that series to L.A. last week, so you'd better believe they've been waiting for another crack at the defending NL champs.

Secondly, Milwaukee catches the Dodgers in a really tough scheduling spot tonight with this being their first game back at home since before the All-Star break. Some guys came back during the break, but for all involved in the All-Star festivities, this is the first time they've been back for awhile and there are always non-baseball things to take care of off the field for guys in that situation. Add on top of that that the Dodgers definitely looked like a tired team as they were no-hit through 26 batters yesterday in Atlanta, and this sets up to be a great fade play of the home side tonight.

Manny Machado is going to be able to celebrate plenty of home victories during his time in L.A. the rest of the year. But I've got him waiting at least one more day to get that first, as the Brewers are still getting a lack of respect from the markets in terms of day-to-day price. Yet, we've already seen some reverse line movement in Milwaukee's favor this morning as VegasInsider.com has action coming in at a 75% clip on L.A., yet the Dodgers line has dropped after opening up in the -165 range.

That's the final piece of evidence I need to confirm a play on the Brewers tonight as they aim to make a statement that they won't be pushed over by L.A. in this four-game set of a potential playoff matchup.

                  Best Bet: Milwaukee (+135)

                    • Swihart wins it in 13th, then Red Sox get Kinsler from LAA
                      July 31, 2018

BOSTON (AP) Blake Swihart doubled into the Red Sox bullpen to score Eduardo Nunez in the 13th inning and Boston beat the Philadelphia Phillies 2-1 on Monday night to move a season-high six games ahead of the New York Yankees in the AL East.

Boston announced after the game it had acquired Ian Kinsler from the Angels to fill in for injured second baseman Dustin Pedroia.

Hector Velazquez (7-0) pitched a scoreless inning for the win and Austin Davis (1-1) took the loss after pitching a perfect 12th before allowing Nunez's leadoff single in the next inning. Luis Garcia, the 12th pitcher of the night, struck out Brock Holt but allowed Nunez to steal second.

Swihart lined the first pitch he saw toward the gap and into the bullpen on one hop for his first career walk-off RBI.

The Red Sox have won 19 of their last 23 games and matched their biggest lead in the division of the season. At 75-33, they have the best record in baseball and are 42 games above .500 for the first time since the end of the 1946 season. They have won 19 of their last 21 interleague games.

                      MARINERS 2, ASTROS 0

SEATTLE (AP) - James Paxton excelled in his return from the disabled list, Nelson Cruz had a two-run double in the sixth inning and Seattle beat Houston.

Astros starter Gerrit Cole (10-3) carried a no-hitter into the sixth, but Jean Segura ended it with a two-out infield single. Two batters later, Cruz lined his double down the left-field line.

Cole was perfect through four innings while locked in a duel with Paxton (9-4), who was making his first start since leaving a July 12 game in Anaheim because of lower back inflammation.

Cole retired the first 12 batters he faced, striking out six, until he hit Cruz with a pitch leading off the fifth. After Segura's single, Denard Span hit a clean single to right-center, and Cruz hit a first-pitch slider inside third base. Segura scored easily, and the ball caromed off the protruding side wall, allowing Span to narrowly beat catcher Max Stassi's tag after a strong throw by left fielder Marwin Gonzalez.

Paxton was brilliant for Seattle, scattering three hits - two of them infield singles - over seven innings. He struck out eight, did not walk a batter, and threw 59 of his 82 pitches for strikes.

                      TWINS 5, INDIANS 4

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) - Mitch Garver drove in the winning run with a one-out double in the ninth inning for Minnesota, capping a victory over Cleveland after the Twins traded away reliever Zach Duke and starter Lance Lynn.

Jose Ramirez hit two home runs to match Boston's J.D. Martinez for the most in the majors with 32, but the Indians couldn't hold a 3-2 lead.

Miguel Sano, who hit an RBI single earlier and went 2-for-3 for his first hits in the majors since June 12, drew a walk to start the ninth against Neil Ramirez (0-1). Jake Cave advanced pinch-runner Ehire Adrianza with a sacrifice bunt, and Garver delivered the deep drive to left-center field to trigger an infield celebration from a weary Twins team.

Fernando Rodney (3-2) pitched a scoreless ninth, striking out Yonder Alonso with runners at second and third.

                      BRAVES 5, MARLINS 3

ATLANTA (AP) - Freddie Freeman hit a go-ahead homer in the third inning, Ronald Acuna Jr. also went deep and Atlanta beat Miami.

Brian Anderson's two-run homer off Julio Teheran (8-7) in the first gave Miami a lead Wei-Yin Chen (3-8) couldn't hold. The Braves pulled even in the second when Tyler Flowers walked, moved to third on Johan Camargo's double and scored on Ender Inciarte's fly ball. Camargo scored on Teheran's two-out single up the middle.

Freeman's homer, his 18th, in the third gave Atlanta the lead. Flowers walked and scored from first on another double to left by Camargo.

A.J. Minter pitched the ninth for his sixth save in six chances.

                      CARDINALS 5, ROCKIES 4, 10 INNINGS

ST. LOUIS (AP) - Marcell Ozuna hit his first career game-ending homer in the 10th inning, and St. Louis snapped Colorado's four-game winning streak.

Ozuna connected against Jake McGee (1-4), sending a one-out drive deep to center for his 13th homer. The slugger also extended his homer streak to three straight games.

Dakota Hudson (1-0) got three outs for his first career win.

Colorado opened a 4-0 lead when Nolan Arenado hit his fifth career grand slam in the fifth inning off Daniel Poncedeleon, who replaced Carlos Martinez when the right-hander departed with a mild shoulder strain with two outs.

                        • LEADING OFF: Archer, Beltre, 'Cutch could go on deadline day
                          July 30, 2018

A look at what's happening around the majors Tuesday:

                          DEADLINE DAY

Teams have until 4 p.m. EDT to swing a trade without waivers, meaning it could be the last chance for contenders to land some top targets. Could Bryce Harper really be on the move? Will the Rays find a new home for Chris Archer? What about the Rangers and Adrian Beltre? Giants outfielder Andrew McCutchen, Twins second baseman Brian Dozier and Rays reliever Sergio Romo could go, too. Meanwhile, there hasn't been any movement from the Mets to trade Jacob deGrom or Noah Syndergaard, though Zach Wheeler could still wind up elsewhere.

                          THE CLOSER'S OPENER

Before Roberto Osuna steps onto the mound as Houston's new closer, the Astros want him to stand in the clubhouse and explain himself. The former Blue Jays closer was traded by Toronto to Houston on Monday, but he won't pitch until at least next week as he serves a 75-game suspension under Major League Baseball's domestic violence policy. Osuna was charged with one count of assault in Toronto in May, which remains pending. Astros pitchers Justin Verlander and Lance McCullers Jr. have been outspoken in their disdain for domestic abusers, and Verlander expects that Osuna will address the team before he makes his Astros debut.

''We don't know the whole story,'' Verlander said. ''Obviously I've said some pretty inflammatory things about stuff like this in the past and I stand by my words.

''But I think with an ongoing case as is this one, just see what happens. But it will be interesting. I think he plans to talk to us when he gets here and we'll go from there and see what happens.''

                          DEALIN' DIPOTO

Mariners GM Jerry Dipoto has given manager Scott Servais a whole new bullpen. Seattle acquired left-hander Zach Duke from the Twins and right-hander Adam Warren from the Yankees on Monday. Dipoto also acquired righty Sam Tuivailala from St. Louis last week. Dipoto said the additions combined with what Seattle already has in its bullpen should help Servais keep everyone fresh.

''Obviously a lot of teams are looking to add to the bullpen this time of year with the trade deadline coming up. I'm not surprised,'' Servais said. ''It may not be the last thing we do.''

                          BABY BRAVES

Kolby Allard is set to become the latest prospect to debut for Atlanta this season when the 20-year-old left-hander starts against Miami. Allard was a first-round pick in 2015 and has been at Triple-A all of this season, going 6-4 with a 2.80 ERA. Allard joins Ozzie Albies, Luiz Gohara, Ronald Acuna and Mike Soroka as Braves players to debut before their 22nd birthday since the start of 2017.

                          • Tuesday’s 6-pack

On May 17, 1979, Phillies beat the Cubs 23-22 at Wrigley Field:

                            — Both starting pitchers got KO’d after getting only one out.

                            — Bill Buckner had 7 RBI for the Cubs, seven years before his infamous World Series error.

                            — Dave Kingman hit three homers, knocked in six runs for Chicago.

                            — Pete Rose batted 3rd for Philly; he scored four runs, knocked in four.

                            — Reliever Rawly Eastwick got the win, shutting Cubs out in 8th/9th innings.

                            — Crowd that day in Chicago was only 14,952.

                            Tweet of the Day
“If you can’t spot the sucker in your first half hour at the table, then you’re the sucker.”
Mike McDermott, from the movie Rounders

                            Tuesday’s quiz
What team did Pete Rose finish his baseball career with?

                            Sunday’s quiz
Saturday night, Ryan Zimmerman tied Tim Wallach as the Expos/Nationals’ all-time franchise lead in hits.

                            ****************************

Tuesday’s List of 13: Nobody asked me, but…….

                            13) I always wonder about guys who get traded during the season; what happens to their stuff?

Manny Machado went from Orioles to LA last week; who moves his stuff to the west coast? If a player is married, the spouse gets stuck with all that work, but if not, then what?

Asdrubel Cabrera got traded to the Phillies but they were in Cincinnati over the weekend, are in Boston now. He hasn’t even been in Philadelphia since the trade. Where does he live when he gets there?

The better players are so wealthy they can pay people to help them out; does the agent do the logistics for the move?

                            12) I also wonder how Michael O’Keefe’s acting career would’ve turned out if he hadn’t played golf against Judge Smails in Caddyshack.

Think about it; he blew the clerkship because he played golf with Ty Webb against the judge; what is Danny Noonan doing now?

                            a) Golf pro, is on the Senior Tour.
                            b) Bartender in the clubhouse at Bushwood CC.
                            c) Went to law school anyway, became a judge
                            d) Owns a driving range like Roy McAvoy in Tin Cup

                            11) Jacob deGrom has started 21 games this season; six of them were 0-0 after the 5th inning. Mets lost five of those six games.

                            10) If I were advising Dez Bryant on how to get another NFL job, the first thing I’d tell him is to shut his bleeping mouth.

It doesn’t matter if what he says is right; what matters is that Bryant is perceived as a cancer in the locker room and for a marginal player to get signed, he has to fit in, not stand out.

                            9) Have been reading online how NFL players get messages on social media from fantasy football owners who have those players on their team and lose games.

A guy tweeted this to Odell Beckham: “this is my real life too. Remember that dropped pass on 4th down with under 5 to play? Want to refund me my league entry fee?”

There are thousands of fantasy leagues around the country; make/don’t make a big play, and ton of money changes hands. That doesn’t even take legalized gambling into effect.

                            8) On ESPN.com, an interesting piece by Jason Witten, geared towards players:

                            Jason Witten’s Social Media Commandments
                            1. Don’t read your mentions good or bad — the feedback that matters is from your coach and those you respect.
                            2. Don’t reply to a negative; keep your eye above the spectator line.
                            3. Negative social media is often not indicative of the real world.
                            4. Use social media as a way to stay informed and connect.
                            5. Don’t post anything that wouldn’t make your family proud.

                            7) Sound wagering advice from Todd Fuhrman (@toddfuhrman) on Twitter:

“if you plan to bet football this fall and want to make ONE simple change to your betting habits; make it a priority to give yourself multiple lines (outs) to bet into rather than placing all your wagers at just one shop”

                            6) We read lot of cruddy stuff about famous people; here is a good thing:

The LeBron James Family Foundation and the Akron Public Schools opened a new elementary school for at-risk children on Monday. James donated $50M of his own money to the program.

The I Promise School focuses on educating children from challenging situations or backgrounds. The school will begin with two grades, 3rd and 4th, with plans to expand in the coming years, until it is Grades 1-8.

The I Promise School has a longer school day and longer school year.

                            5) Jets finally signed rookie QB/savior Sam Darnold, which was the smart thing to do. Media at Jets’ camp wasn’t thrilled that Darnold was unavailable for interviews afterwards.

                            4) Lions’ coach Matt Patricia, on advice he got on being an NFL head coach:

“…….Be yourself, make sure the players see who you are, make sure they see the passion, the love for the game, make sure they understand the message.”

                            3) Broadcast of Monday’s Blue Jays-A’s game on Oakland radio was commercial-free, with the commercials replaced by memories of late announcer Bill King, a year after his enshrinement in the Baseball Hall of Fame.

                            2) There are rumors about that Adam Jones blocked a trade from Baltimore to the Phillies. When a player declines to go from a last-place team to a first-place team, it makes you wonder.

                            1) Rick Pitino has a book coming out in September that will “lay all his cards on the table” about his time coaching, both in the NBA and in college.

If you’ve seen Spike Lee’s excellent movie He Got Game, none of the Louisville stuff should be a big surprise. Some of the scenes in He Got Game were similar to the Louisville mess, and that movie was made in 1998!!!!

I’ll read the book at some point, but what we really need is Pitino on TV analyzing games, so I can learn from him. At least put him in the studio. Please?
