    • Betts lifts Red Sox past Twins in extras
      July 27, 2018

BOSTON (AP) Mookie Betts homered on the second pitch in the bottom of the 10th inning to give the Boston Red Sox a 4-3 victory over the Minnesota Twins on Friday night.

Betts' first career game-ending homer capped a wild last few innings. The Twins rallied from a 2-1 deficit to take a one-run lead in the top of the ninth. Rafael Devers hit a leadoff homer in the bottom of the inning to force extras. Betts drove Matt Belisle's first pitch of the night over the Green Monster setting off a celebration to end a hot, muggy night at Fenway Park.

Betts' teammates cooled him off by dousing him with a cooler full of ice water when the All-Start right fielder stepped out of the dugout for a curtain call.

Belisle (1-1) faced only Betts, who ended it with his 25th homer of the season. Tyler Thornburg (1-0) held the Twins scoreless in the 10th after Craig Kimbrel blew a shot at his 33rd save in the ninth.

Eddie Rosario hit a two-run double with two outs in the ninth to give Minnesota its first lead.

Jackie Bradley Jr. hit a two-run homer in the fifth for Boston and Chris Sale struck out 10 over six scoreless innings.

      DODGERS 4, BRAVES 1

ATLANTA (AP) - Clayton Kershaw pitched 7 2/3 strong innings, added a two-run single and reached four times, helping Los Angeles beat Atlanta.

Kershaw (4-5) allowed one run and six hits and striking out eight. The three-time Cy Young Award winner and 2014 NL MVP is 4-0 with a 1.43 ERA in 10 career starts against the Braves.

He surprised the capacity crowd at SunTrust Park by doubling down the left-field line to put Los Angeles up 4-1 in the fourth. The inside-out swing that scored Matt Kemp and Chris Taylor didn't draw too loud of a reaction from the fans, but they had seen enough in the eighth when Kershaw walked for the third time. Kenley Jansen got the last four outs to earn his 30th save

Los Angeles has won two straight, improving its NL-best road record to 30-22. The Dodgers are 32-16 overall since June 1, tops in the NL over that span.

Alex Verdugo and Yasmani Grandal homered off Mike Foltynewicz (7-7).

      PIRATES 5, METS 4

PITTSBURGH (AP) - David Freese drove in five runs, including an RBI single in the ninth inning that lifted Pittsburgh past New York.

Freese homered in going 3 for 3 with two walks, helping the Pirates win for the 12th time in 14 games.

The Mets had won three in a row. They beat the Pirates 12-6 on Thursday night behind Asdrubal Cabrera's homer and two doubles - and Cabrera was traded to Philadelphia on Friday.

Josh Harrison led off the Pittsburgh ninth with an infield single against rookie reliever Tim Peterson (2-2). A single by Gregory Polanco put runners at the corner and Elias Diaz was intentionally walked to load the bases. Freese hit a drive over center fielder Brandon Nimmo for the win.

Pirates closer Felipe Vazquez (4-2) got the win after striking out two in a scoreless ninth.

      RANGERS 11, ASTROS 2

HOUSTON (AP) - Robinson Chirinos hit a two-run homer, Isiah Kiner-Falefa and Jurickson Profar added solo shots and Texas routed Houston.

Texas snapped an eight-game losing streak to the Astros and ended a four-game skid overall.

Texas starter Yovani Gallardo (5-1) allowed two hits while walking four in 5 1-3 scoreless innings for his second straight win. Dallas Keuchel (8-9) was the loser.

Evan Gattis hit his 20th homer for Houston.

Houston played without reigning American League MVP Jose Altuve, who sat out after leaving Wednesday's game with a sore right knee.

      CARDINALS 5, CUBS 2

ST. LOUIS (AP) - Paul DeJong had three hits and three RBIs, Yadier Molina also had three hits and drove in a run, and St. Louis beat Chicago before a season-high crowd of 47,169 at Busch Stadium.

DeJong's RBI triple, just the sixth for the Cardinals this season, tied it at 1 in the third, and Jose Martinez followed with an RBI single to give St. Louis the lead.

DeJong added a two-run single in the fourth.

Cardinals starter Luke Weaver (6-9) gave up two runs in six innings. Mike Mayers and Jordan Hicks pitched perfect innings of relief and Bud Norris earned his 20th save.

Mike Montgomery (3-4) allowed five runs and 12 hits in five innings.

Anthony Rizzo's 427-foot homer gave the Cubs a 1-0 lead in the third. Javier Baez added another solo blast, reaching the 20-homer mark for the second consecutive season, in the sixth.

      NATIONALS 9, MARLINS 1

MIAMI (AP) - Max Scherzer allowed one unearned run and struck out 11 in eight innings on his 34th birthday, and Washington beat Miami.

Juan Soto homered, tripled and had three RBIs, Matt Adams had three hits and two RBIs and Bryce Harper drove in two. Washingtoin beat Florida for the 16th time in 17 games, including eight straight in Miami.

Scherzer (14-5) allowed three hits and did not walk a batter while throwing 74 of his 106 pitches for strikes. He lowered his ERA to 2.30 and reached the 200-strikeout mark for the seventh consecutive season, tying Roger Clemens and Walter Johnson for the second-longest streak in major league history.

Pablo Lopez (2-2) was the loser.

BLUE JAYS 10, WHITE SOX 5

CHICAGO (AP) - Lourdes Gurriel Jr. hit two of Toronto's five home runs, Curtis Granderson led off the game with a homer and the Blue Jays beat Chicago.

Gurriel followed Granderson's blast by hitting the next pitch into the left-field seats. He added another solo shot in the fourth and a double in the eighth and had his ninth straight multihit game.

Randal Grichuk added a two-run homer and Kendrys Morales also connected for the Blue Jays in the opener of a 10-game trip. The Blue Jays tagged White Sox starter Reynaldo Lopez (4-9) for all five homers.

The five home runs allowed by Lopez were one short of a modern day record.

Marcus Stroman (4-7) - who was also the starter when Jose Bautista and Josh Donaldson last started a Blue Jays game with back-to-back homers in 2016 - pitched 6 2/3 innings, allowing two runs on seven hits.

      REDS 6, PHILLIES 4

CINCINNATI (AP) - Mason Williams hit a three-run homer to snap a 2-2 tie in the fourth inning, and Cincinnati's bullpen made it stand up against Philadelphia.

Eugenio Suarez added a solo shot and right-hander David Hernandez (4-0) turned in 2 1/3 innings of scoreless emergency relief to help the Reds, the NL Central's last-place team, snap East Division-leading Philadelphia's three-game winning streak.

Suarez led off the second against Nick Piveta (6-9) with his 24th homer. Suarez has homered in five straight games, tying a franchise record.

Jared Hughes got two outs with a walk in the eighth, and Raisel Iglesias gave up an unearned run before getting Rhys Hoskins to ground into a fielder's choice for his 20th save.

      INDIANS 8, TIGERS 3

DETROIT (AP) - Francisco Lindor hit two of Cleveland's four home runs, and the Indians broke through in the final two innings to beat Detroit.

Yonder Alonso and Brandon Guyer also went deep to help AL Central-leading Indians improve to 29-13 against division opponents. Cleveland scored four runs in the eighth on a tiebreaking single by Alonso and a three-run homer by Guyer.

Victor Martinez hit a solo shot for the Tigers, but All-Star Joe Jimenez (4-2) couldn't hold off the Indians in the eighth. Cody Allen (3-4) won in relief.

      ORIOLES 15, RAYS 5

BALTIMORE (AP) - Adam Jones hit a three-run homer, Jonathan Schoop connected in a fifth consecutive game and Baltimore beat Chris Archer and Tampa Bay.

The rebuilding Orioles are looking to deal Jones before the July 31 non-waiver trade deadline, and he put on quite a show for any potential suitor. Jones hit an RBI single in the first inning, singled and scored in the fourth and homered off Austin Pruitt in an eight-run seventh.

Archer (3-5) allowed seven hits and three runs in six innings. Because Archer's name has cropped up in trade rumors, there was speculation this could be his final start with Tampa Bay.

Andrew Cashner (3-9) gave up two runs in six innings to earn his first win in 10 starts since May 21. It was his first victory in 13 career starts at Camden Yards, including 11 this season.

      ROCKIES 3, ATHLETICS 1

DENVER (AP) - Kyle Freeland threw six shutout innings, Nolan Arenado homered and Colorado cooled off Oakland.

Freeland (9-6) allowed five hits while striking out five, walking three and hitting a batter. Colorado's starting pitching is 6-0 with a 1.65 ERA at Coors Field in July.

Ian Desmond and Garrett Hampson also drove in runs to help the Rockies win for the 14th time in 19 this month. Adam Ottavino threw a spotless ninth for his fourth save of the year.

Sean Manaea (9-7) allowed three runs on nine hits for the A's. They had their season high-tying, six-game winning streak snapped.

Cincinnati Reds used to play their home games in Riverfront Stadium.

        Thursday’s quiz
Houston Astros used to play in the National League; JR Richard hit 10 homers, the most homers of any Astro pitcher while wearing a Houston uniform.

        ************************

Saturday’s List of 13: Random stuff with weekend here……

        13) Has to be brutal to be a manager/coach for a bad baseball team; you play 162 games in 182 days, and you lose the great majority of them. Not fun.

When you see the manager/pitching coach get tossed in the top of the first inning of a game, you know the frustration level has to be high. White Sox lost both last night, on a checked swing call.

Umpires who are respected don’t get barked at as much as other guys. The ump in this case, Fielden Culbreth gets barked at a lot.

        12) When Mets’ TV analyst Keith Hernandez isn’t bored, he can be very good; Friday night he was complaining that in between at-bats, hitters go to clubhouse and look at their at-bats on video with the assistant hitting coach, before they bat again.

Hernandez is an old-school guy; he thinks players should watch the actual game, talk about the opposing pitcher with teammates, and leave film study for after the game.

        11) Baseball stuff:
        — Mets traded IF Asdrubel Cabrera to the Phillies for Franklyn Kilome, a pitcher who was 4-6, 4.24 in the AA Eastern League.
        — Twins traded utility guy Eduardo Escobar to Arizona, for three Class A prospects. Escobar leads MLB with 37 doubles this season.
        — Cardinals traded P Sam Tuivailala to the Mariners for P Seth Elledge.
        — Late night trade; Brewers got Mike Moustakas from the Royals for Brett Phillips and a minor leaguer.

        10) Aaron Judge broke his wrist when he was hit by a pitch Thursday night; he is expected to be out at least three weeks.

        9) Movie admissions: I’ve never seen Jaws or Star Wars; just saw The Godfather for the first time earlier this month.

On the bright side, I’ve seen Rounders and Moneyball at least 50 times each.

        8) Mets’ OF Brandon Nimmo looks like he’ll be a good player, but it bugs me when he sprints to first base after a walk. False hustle stuff like that has always seemed like BS to me.

        7) Lamar Odom says he is going to play pro ball in China next season; hopefully he has his life back in order after a tumultuous couple of years.

        6) Tampa Bay (19-23) has played the most one-run games in the majors this season.

        5) There are seven new head coaches in the NFL this year; Seattle/Carolina are only two teams who have the same head coach as last year, but changed both coordinators.

        4) Chargers’ CB Jason Verrett tore his achilles, is out for the year.

        3) New Mexico State basketball coach Chris Jans makes $429,000 a year; he also gets an extra $5,000 every time he beats New Mexico or UTEP. Aggies were 4-0 vs those teams LY, but last year the bonus was “only” $2,500, so he banked an extra $10,000 for those wins.

        2) Nick Saban signed a new deal with Alabama that extends his contract by one year through 2025. His base salary in 2018 will increase to $7.5M plus a bonus of $800,000. The deal will increase $400,000 annually through 2025.

All he has to do to make people happy is win the national title every year.

        1) Cole Hamels’ home/road splits this year:
        Home: 1-7, 6.41 in 10 starts
        Road: 4-2, 2.93 in 10 starts.

There is no DH in the National League; he threw a no-hitter at Wrigley Field in 2015, so the Cubs figure his numbers should improve.

          • Brewers get 3B Mike Moustakas from Royals
            July 28, 2018

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) The Milwaukee Brewers have acquired third baseman Mike Moustakas from the Kansas City Royals, making their second deal in as many days as the club makes a push for its first playoff appearance since 2011.

The Brewers sent outfielder Brett Phillips and pitcher Jorge Lopez late Friday night to the Royals, who are in last place in the AL Central.

Milwaukee announced the trade late Friday night, when they beat San Francisco Giants on the road 3-1. Reliever Joakim Soria, who was acquired Thursday from the Chicago White Sox, made his Brewers debut by pitching a scoreless seventh inning.

The left-handed hitting Moustakas was hitting .249 with 20 homers and 62 RBIs for the Royals. His arrival could mean that the Brewers will shift their current third baseman, Travis Shaw, to second base.

MLB Betting – Chicago Cubs at St. Louis Cardinals

The Chicago Cubs and St. Louis Cardinals get the spotlight on Saturday afternoon on FS1. The Cardinals are probably already too far back in the NL Central to catch the Cubs, but this is still a huge series for St. Louis, as they are in danger of falling out of contention in the National League Wild Card race.

The probable pitching matchup for Saturday has Jose Quintana going for the Cubs, while the Cardinals counter with Miles Mikolas.

Let’s look at the matchup and MLB picks.

Chicago Cubs at St. Louis Cardinals
Date and Time: Saturday, July 28, 2018, 4:05 p.m. ET
Location: Busch Stadium, St. Louis, MO
MLB Odds: Cardinals -110, Cubs -110, Total 8.5 (Over -115)
Probable Pitchers: Jose Quintana vs. Miles Mikolas
Cubs vs. Cardinals TV Coverage: FS1

The Cubs were 27-23 in their first 50 road games, with 25 games going over the total, 24 going under, with one push. They are averaging just over 5 runs per game and giving up 3.7 per contest.

The Cardinals are simply a .500 team that really isn’t going anywhere. They haven’t even played that well at home, as they were just 24-24 in their first 48 home games. They went over the total 20 times in those games, under 26 times, with two pushes. They average 4.5 runs per game and give up about 3.9 runs per contest.

              Starting Pitchers

Quintana seems to be finding his groove for the Cubs. He is 9-6 with a 3.87 ERA. He has made 19 starts and thrown 104.2 innings, giving up 95 hits with 93 strikeouts and 49 walks. He gave up just two runs and six hits last time out against the Cardinals in seven innings. He has given up two runs or less in seven of his last nine starts and he is 3-0 with a 1.89 ERA in his last three starts. The only concern in backing Quintana is that he did throw 121 pitches in his last outing.

Mikolas is 10-3 with a 2.82 ERA. He has made 20 starts and thrown 124.1 innings, giving up 111 hits. He has stuck out 89 and walked just 22. He went five innings against the Cubs in his last start and gave up two runs and six hits. He threw only 74 pitches in that contest. He is 1-0 with a 4.20 ERA in his last three starts.

              Key Stats

Somewhat surprisingly, the Cubs have struggled on the road against right-handed pitchers of late, as they are just 2-7 in their last 9 road games vs. a right-handed starter. The Cardinals have had struggles of their own against lefties, as they are 5-11 in their last 16 games vs. a left-handed starter. St. Louis has also been playing poorly at home as they were just 1-6 in their last 7 home games before this series began.

Looking at the total, the Cubs had gone over in their last four road games before this series began. They had gone over in 11 of their last 12 vs. NL Central teams. St. Louis had gone over in their last five home games before this series began. The Cubs and Cardinals had gone over in their last meetings before this series started.

              Cubs vs. Cardinals Picks

Both Quintana and Mikolas have been pitching well for much of this season, but I am a bit concerned about how many pitches Quintana threw in his last start. There were some concerns about Quintana having arm fatigue heading into the All-Star break and then he threw a ton of pitches last time out. Mikolas has been a reliable starter all season for the Cardinals and I give St. Louis the pitching edge in this contest. The price on the Cardinals should be reasonable, as I expect this game to be near a pick. I also think there could be some value on taking the total to go under, but I am a bit concerned about Quintana. I think the best option on Saturday is simply to take the Cardinals.

Cubs vs. Cardinals Pick: St. Louis Cardinals & Under
Cubs vs. Cardinals Score Prediction: Cardinals 5, Cubs 2

                Hang A Left

As you might expect, the contenders dot the list of top teams against left-handed starting pitchers. The championship-caliber teams can bat against anyone. Some of these teams might even add more muscle at the July 31 non-waiver trade deadline to bolster their situational hitting or benches, too. It's a matter of the rich getting richer, and the poor teams selling off key assets because they simply cannot afford them.

Fade the losing sides, as those who have struggled against left-handed starting pitching this season have been really bad. By this point, the losing teams are who we thought they were, and they're not suddenly going to flick a switch and get better. In fact, they might even be a little worse down the stretch. Baltimore, Miami and N.Y. Mets are just off the list below, but they also turned in winning percentages under .400 vs. LHP.

                Looking Ahead

                Saturday, July 28

The Indians have dominated the Tigers this season, heading into Friday's series opener with 10 wins in 13 tries against Detroit this season. They'll look to keep it going on Saturday with Mike Clevinger on the hill against Blaine Hardy. The Indians RHP posted a quality start in his earlier appearance at Comerica Field on June 9, allowing two earned runs, four hits and three walks with five strikeouts over 6 2/3 innings. Facing the Tigers might be just what he needs to snap a personal three-start losing streak. Clevinger is 4-1 with a 2.36 ERA across 34 1/3 innings over six starts and one relief appearances against Detroit, and he has recorded 20 strikeouts over 20 2/3 innings in his career at Comerica.

For an American League pitcher, Kevin Gausman's 4.54 ERA and 1.37 WHIP is rather ordinary. It isn't terribly by any stretch, but his 4-8 record has been rough because of Baltimore's lack of run support. Gausman has won just once over his past 12 outings dating back to May 11, a win at home against the Rays. In that victory, Gausman allowed just two earned runs while scattering 11 hits over 7 1/3 innings, and he was 3-2 with a 3.18 ERA through eight outings. It's been mostly downhill ever since, but perhaps a familiar set of faces in the opposing dugout will get him going. Of course, the second time the Rays saw him on May 27 in St. Petersburg, they torched him for seven runs, six hits and two walks in just 2 2/3 innings, his shortest start of the season.

Felix Hernandez is no longer the ace who would dominate a team, or intimidate them just by showing up. He is a shell of himself, as is evidenced by his 8-8 record, 5.14 ERA and 1.37 WHIP. There is a lot of mileage on the 32-year-old's right arm. This will be just his second outing against the Angels this season, and he hopes it ends better than earlier. On May 6, the Halos touched him up for five earned runs, seven hits and four walks over 5 2/3 innings in a loss. Even when King Felix was humming along at an All-Star caliber, Mike Trout wasn't impressed. The slugger has owned him, going 30-for-81 (.370) with four doubles, two triples, seven homers and 19 RBI while turning in a 1.146 OPS. Ian Kinsler has also had some success, posting four doubles, four homers and a .785 OPS in 87 career at-bats. Of course, Trout has whiffed 27 times vs. Hernandez, and Felix has struck out Albert Pujols 15 times in 65 at-bats, too.

                Weather Report

The great news for Saturday's slate of games is that precipitation is unlikely in any of the venues. However, wind will play a factor next to San Francisco Bay, affecting the Brewers and Giants. Winds will be howling from 17-20 mph from home plate to the left-center field power alley, so watch the total in this one.

                Sunday, July 29

The Phillies head into Cincinnati to take on the Reds, and Zach Eflin will put his winning streak on the line. He has won each of his past six decisions, and hasn't lost since May 30 on the road against the Dodgers. Eflin has just one previous appearance in his career against the Reds, but that came in 2017 when he was absolutely atrocious. For the record, he allowed seven earned runs, nine hits and a career-high four homers to the Reds on May 28 last season at Citizens Bank Park. This will be his first-ever appearance at Great American Ball Park. The Reds enter Thursday's action at just 7-12 against the NL East this season.

Nathan Eovaldi will make his debut for the Boston Red Sox on Sunday afternoon. The Red Sox and the right-handed veteran hope it goes a little better than his outing at Target Field on July 13 as a member of the Tampa Bay Rays. Eovaldi was tuned up for eight earned runs, nine hits and a pair of walks over just 2 2/3 innings, his shortest outing of the season. In fact, Eovaldi had lasted at least five innings in each of his other nine starts this season. The Twins hitters do not have a long history against the righty, but collectively the current Minnesota roster is hitting .328 (21-for-64) with a double, two triples, four homers and 16 RBI with a .999 OPS against him.

The Cubs and Cardinals will do battle on Sunday Night Baseball at Busch Stadium II. Despite OK numbers with a 4.05 ERA and 1.26 WHIP, Kyle Hendricks of the Cubs has a subpar 6-9 record. He has a 3.53 ERA in 11 starts at home, and a poor 4.70 ERA in 10 outings on the road, as the opposition is hitting .282 against him away from the Friendly Confines. He has a victory in two previous outings this season against the Cardinals, going 1-0 with a 5.06 ERA over 10 2/3 innings, but the Cards are hitting .356 against him in the brief encounters. He did post a quality start in his only previous appearance this season at Busch, allowing three earned runs, seven hits and four waks over six innings. In fact, that was his second most recent win, and that came June 16. Since the start of the 2015 season, Hendricks is 3-1 with a 3.76 ERA in eight starts against St. Louis.

The Cardinals will run RHP John Gant out for the start. He was impressive in his most recent start on July 21, a game in Wrigley Field, allowing just four hits and three walks over five scoreless innings while racking up a pair of strikeouts. St. Louis entered the season just 1-6 in the past seven games at home, while going 1-5 in the past six at home against teams with a winning road record. The 'over' has hit in five consecutive meetings in this series heading into Friday's series opener.

                Weather Report

The weather will also be very fair across baseball, with a similar trouble spot on Sunday. The Brewers and Giants will again be dealing with a stiff jetstream from home plate to straightaway center field, blowing anywhere from 14-17 mph. Again, watch the totals.

For the Sunday night game, the Cubs and Cardinals could be dodging raindrops, as there is a 50 percent chance of thunderstorms in the forecast from 6pm CDT to 8pm CDT. That could mean a slight delay for the nationally televised NL Central battle, but a postponement doesn't appear likely, as the weather clears by the middle innings.

MLB Weekend Series Prices Best Bets

All good runs must come to an end and that's what happened with last week's plays on the Brewers and Orioles fell short. Baltimore was the more disappointing of the two as they were swept yet again by Toronto in a series where winning means next to nothing to Toronto as well.

It goes to show you that sometimes it's best to stay away from the worst of the worst in MLB from July onwards, because even though the worst teams in baseball still win about 40% of their games, there will be multiple six and seven-game losing streaks throughout the year for them as well.

So with a bounce back weekend in order, and very few series to breakdown with the bulk of them starting yesterday as four-game sets, let's get right to this week's play as there is only one that stands out.

                  Odds per - Bookmaker.eu

                  Seattle Mariners (+140) vs L.A Angels (-160)

Neither of these AL West rivals come into the weekend with phenomenal form, but the Angels might have claim to being the better of the two after beating the White Sox 11-3 and 12-8 on Wednesday and Thursday. The Angels are still just a .500 team for the year as their 2018 playoff hopes seem to be fading with each passing day, yet, they are still getting priced as an elite team at times. As a bettor there has to be a point where you cut ties with your preseason biases, and it looks as though the time is now for us to stop believing the Angels are going to go on a run and get back into the playoff picture.

L.A sits 15 games behind Houston for 1st in the AL West entering action on Friday, but more importantly, they've got two teams ahead of them to deal with. One of those is this Seattle squad who have limped around a bit the past few weeks and watched as a surging Oakland A's team have nearly caught them. Considering only one of the two is going to get a Wildcard spot (the other will go to the non-division winner in AL East), this Seattle/Oakland/Houston race in the AL West the final few months should be exciting. And what you don't see there: the L.A Angels included in the mix.

So while the Angels are the ones at home this weekend, pricing them at -160 to take two of three over Seattle is a little absurd. Seattle had a full day off on Thursday after earning a tough split with the San Francisco Giants this week, and have taken six of their last nine against the Angels this year. They've beaten Friday's Angels starter Andrew Heaney twice already this year (2-0 SU), and have gone 3-0 SU against Saturday's Angels starter Jaime Barria as well. Yet, here we are getting +140 on the Mariners for the weekend and even +130ish for Game 1 Friday night?

I simply don't buy it as this Seattle team is the one that's got to start playing with a bit more urgency to win when you think about it. For months it's been Seattle and Houston at the top of the division with both essentially knowing they'd have a playoff spot if the season ended that day, but with Oakland's six-week surge, it's the Mariners that have to pick up their play again. Helping hammer in those final nails in the coffin of L.A's 2018 campaign would be a happy consequence for Seattle victories this weekend, and although there is some potential concerns with a possible look-ahead (at least on Sunday) with Houston on deck for the Mariners, I'm not sure we will need the series finale to cash this wager.

                  Odds per - Bookmaker.eu

Best Bet: Seattle to win the series (+140)

As far as the other series' are concerned this weekend, here's how I see them breaking down

*Number of games won in brackets

                  Cleveland (2) vs Detroit (1)
                  Texas (1) vs Houston (2)
Toronto (1) vs Chicago White Sox (2)
Chicago Cubs (2) vs St Louis (1)
                  Oakland (2) vs Colorado (1)
Arizona (2) vs San Diego (1)

Sunday’s List of 13: Random thoughts on a summer night

                                13) Saturday was the great Vida Blue’s 69th birthday; damn, typing that made me feel old.

Blue was Dwight Gooden before Dwight Gooden; he was a lefty wunderkind who led the Oakland A’s to the 1971 AL West title, then struggled thru a lengthy contract squabble in ’72, but he saved the deciding game of the ’72 ALCS as the A’s won the first of three consecutive World Series.

I was 11 years old when he became the answer to a great trivia question, last switch-hitter to win MVP of the American League (AL pitchers still hit in ’71).

Vida Blue wound up with a career record of 209-161- he was underrated. Happy birthday!!!

                                12) How does Allen Trammell get into the Hall of Fame but not Lou Whitaker?

                                11) According to Baseball Prospectus, when teams have the bases loaded with no one out, they score at least one run 85% of the time.

                                10) Angels 11, Mariners 4— Francisco Arcia, a 28-year old rookie catcher, has 10 RBI in his first two major league games- thats an all-time record.

                                9) Nick Saban makes $7.5M a year coaching Alabama’s football team; Alabama governor Kay Ivey makes $119,500 a year running the state.

                                8) Kansas City 10, New York 2— This game was bet down late to NY -$450; depending on who you ask, this game or Astros (Verlander) against Detroit on July 15th was the highest betting line so far this season.

Please, if you don’t learn anything else from reading this space, never, ever lay more than -$200 on a regular season baseball game.

                                7) Coming into this weekend, the 7th inning ERA for the Colorado Rockies’ bullpen this season was 7.93, which explains why they traded for reliever Seunghwan Oh.

                                6) From the AP: Baker Mayfield is paying for the Browns’ QB’s to hang out in an RV at training camp.

As part of his initiation into the NFL, the #1 overall draft pick is funding a camper that the Browns QBs go to between practice sessions to relax. The recreational vehicle is parked just outside the training facility.

Backup QB Drew Stanton brought the idea of the camper from his time with the Detroit Lions, and says Mayfield initially thought he was kidding. Stanton says “it’s just someplace that you can go. You can get out of these four walls that start to close in on you after a period of time.”

                                5) In the first seven games after Manny Machado was traded, Orioles’ 2B Jonathon Schoop was 11-for-27 (.407) with six HR’s, 11 RBI.

                                4) Mason Williams is a rookie OF with the Reds; his grandfather is Walt (No Neck) Williams, who played for the White Sox a long time ago and actually had no neck. Good ballplayer; he hit .270 in ten major league seasons.

                                3) Last three years, when the home team is favored in Arizona Cardinal games, the Redbirds are 10-18 vs spread; 7-11 as a home favorite, 3-7 as a road underdog.

                                2) Over the last decade, Atlanta Falcons are 12-4 vs spread as a home underdog.

                                1) Last four years, Buffalo Bills are a combined 33-31; that surprised me a little, but they were +28 in turnovers in those games— you go +28 in turnovers, you should be over .500.
