DETROIT (AP) Robinson Cano broke his right hand when hit by a pitch from left-hander Blaine Hardy in the third inning of the Seattle Mariners' 5-4 loss to the Detroit Tigers on Sunday.

The Seattle star, who has played in at least 150 in 11 straight years, said he might need surgery.

Jose Iglesias hit a game-ending single off Juan Nicasio (1-2), and Niko Goodrum homered and had three hits for the Tigers.

Shane Greene (2-2) pitched a scoreless ninth. Seattle lost a road series for the first time all season.

              Monday’s List of 13: Wrapping up a sports weekend…..

We start today with two examples of why baseball is a fascinating game:
              13) Baseball strategy, Exhibit A: Twins-Angels are tied in late innings; Angels have game-winning run on 3rd with two out. Minnesota walks Pujols/Simmons intentionally, to bring up Marte, putting lot of pressure on their pitcher to throw strikes. I’ve never seen a team walk two hitters intentionally to load the bases with two outs, especially with the batter coming up not being a pitcher.

Twins escape the jam, win the game 5-3 in 12 innings.

              12) Baseball strategy, Exhibit B: San Diego was tied with the Cardinals in late innings; Padres had men on first and second, no one out, and pinch-hit Spangenberg for Villanueva so he could bunt the runners over.

Spangenberg fouls off two bunts, count is 2-2, and then he fouls off another bunt and strikes out. What are you telling a position player when you have him bunt with two strikes? Especially on the day you brought him back from AAA.

Padres wound up with a walk-off win in the 13th inning, despite all that.

Two teams use unusual strategy, and both win their game.

              11) Charlotte Knights, AAA farm team of the White Sox, drew 10,512 fans Saturday, their 8th sellout this season. Would Charlotte be a good city for a major league team?

              10) Nick Markakis is hitting .346 this year, having a terrific year; he is 34 years old, has 2,105 career hits, but has never played in an All-Star Game. Hopefully that’ll change this year, and if it does, it’ll be the best moment at the All-Star Game, when he is introduced before the game.

              9) Bad news for the Seattle Mariners; Robinson Cano was hit by a pitch Sunday, broke a bone in his right hand.

              8) Odubel Herrera has reached base in 41 straight games; the all-time record is 84, held by Ted Williams.

              7) Phillies 4, Mets 2— Jacob deGrom threw 45 pitches in the first inning; Phillies fouled off 20 of the 45 pitches- they didn’t get a hit or score a run. A very unusual inning, and then deGrom was lifted from the game.

Mets said that deGrom wasn’t hurt; they just were cautious because of the rain delay before the game and the 45 pitches he threw in the first inning. Plus, it was his first start in 11 days.

              6) By way of reference, Angels’ Jaime Barria threw 49 pitches in a scoreless first inning against the Giants April 22; that was the night of the 21-pitch AB to Brandon Belt. Those two starts are the most pitches this season thrown in a scoreless inning.

              5) Atlanta Braves’ 3B prospect Austin Riley was 4-for-5 Sunday with three HR’s, 8 RBIs for AAA Gwinnett; he’ll be in Atlanta pretty soon.

              4) Richmond-Albany college lacrosse game drew 4,800 fans Saturday here in the capital city of New York State. Albany doesn’t draw crowds like that for football, but they’re ranked #2 in the country in lacrosse, so the bandwagon is pretty crowded these days. Good for the Great Danes.

              3) Texas Rangers brought up lefty reliever Brandon Mann from AAA Sunday; the 34-year old Mann was originally drafted in 2002, and has played both in Japan and in independent leagues. What a journey he must’ve had; congrats on making the big leagues.

              2) Major Leagues need to identify who the replay umpires are for each game; they make calls that change games, but they’re hunkered down in Manhattan and are fairly anonymous. It’d be interesting to know who is making a particular call, for better or worse.

              1) RIP Coach Chuck Knox, the man who won five straight division title for the Rams in the 70’s, and went to coach the Seahawks/Bills. Coach Knox was 186-147-1 in his NFL career; he won Coach of the Year for all three teams that he coached. RIP, sir.

              • B]LEADING OFF: Reds seek out of NL cellar, Manaea vs Red Sox
                May 13, 2018
                [/B]

A look at what's happening around the majors Monday:

                RED HOT, BUT STILL LAST

Cincinnati is the hottest team in baseball, taking a six-game winning streak into a series at San Francisco, and another win would finally get them out of the NL cellar. The Reds (14-27) still have the league's worst winning percentage, but they would pass idle Miami by beating the Giants. They have more work to do in the NL Central, though. Cincinnati trails the fourth-place Cubs by nine games, even after sweeping the Dodgers over four games this weekend.

                YOU AGAIN

Athletics left-hander Sean Manaea faces the Red Sox at Fenway Park about three weeks after no-hitting Boston at home. Manaea (4-4, 2.11 ERA) has been on a bit of a slide since, losing his past two starts while allowing four runs in each game. Red Sox right-hander Rick Porcello (5-0, 2.79) can match Corey Kluber and Luis Severino for the AL wins lead a start after allowing five runs in 5 1/3 innings at Yankee Stadium.

                ROBBED OF ROBINSON

Seattle heads to Minnesota to make up a postponed game from April 8, and they'll do it without Robinson Cano. The star second baseman left Sunday's game with a fracture in his right hand after being hit by a pitch. He's scheduled to see a specialist Tuesday, when he'll find out if surgery will be required. Either way, Cano is likely to miss significant time because the hand is ''broken bad,'' he said.

                YO ADRIAN

The Rangers expect to get a clearer diagnosis regarding Adrian Beltre's injured left hamstring. Beltre had been off the disabled list only a few days before aggravating his strained hamstring Sunday fielding a slow chopper at third base. He previously missed 12 games with the injury.

                WAIN-OH NO

Cardinals right-hander Adam Wainwright may go back on the disabled list after aggravating an elbow injury. Wainwright has already done one DL stint for the elbow, but he said after a rough start Sunday against San Diego he needs ''to pause and get it right.'' The 36-year-old is 1-3 with a 4.00 ERA in four starts this season, walking 14 over 18 innings.

                GETTING LOOSE

Madison Bumgarner is expected to throw off a mound Monday as he works his way back from a broken left hand. If his rehab goes well, he could be ready when he is eligible to return from the 60-day disabled list on May 25.

                        • Top AL teams setting bar high so far
                          May 14, 2018

The Seattle Mariners haven't made the postseason since 2001. This year, they've looked like contenders, and at the moment, they're on pace to win 91 games.

Yet if the season ended now, they wouldn't even receive a wild card.

The bar may end up being set awfully high for entry into the American League postseason this year - if you're in the AL East or West, at least. The Red Sox, Yankees, Astros and Angels all have winning percentages of at least .600, with Boston and New York up in the stratosphere at .700. If the Mariners are going to end their postseason drought, they'll either have to outlast the Astros and Angels for the division, or win enough games for a wild card. Both routes appear challenging.

''We knew when we left spring training, it was going to be a very competitive division,'' Seattle manager Scott Servais said. ''Up and down the division, the fact that you play those teams so much - I've said all along, the teams that'll be standing at the end, at the top or near the top, are the ones that can stay the healthiest.''

Not long after Servais said that Sunday, the Mariners lost second baseman Robinson Cano to a fractured hand .

Last year, Minnesota took the second wild card in the AL with 85 wins. In 2016, both wild cards won 89. The 2015 Astros went 86-76, and that was good enough for a wild card.

A record like that might be enough to win the AL Central this year - although Cleveland (20-19) has plenty of time to pull away - but the other two divisions look stronger. A sizeable gap has opened between the top of the league and the bottom. While the Red Sox and Yankees have been on a tear, the White Sox (10-27), Orioles (13-28) and Royals (13-27) have fallen way, way behind.

At this early point in the season, it's not a huge surprise to see some teams occupying the extremes, but two teams playing .700 baseball is unusual.

Of course, if Seattle wants a reason for optimism, it can look back to the 2002 season. On the morning of May 14, the top two teams in the AL were Boston at 25-9 and ... the Mariners at 26-11. Both those teams came back to the pack and missed the postseason. If there had been a second wild card that year, they'd have finished tied for it at 93-69.

As daunting as the American League terrain may seem at the moment, there's still a long way to go.

Some other developments from around the majors:

                          HANGING IN

Cleveland's underwhelming start has allowed the Twins a bit of a mulligan on their own 17-19 record. Minnesota is just 1 + games out of first place. The Twins rank in the bottom half of the AL in batting average, OPS and home runs. After improving from 59 wins to 85 last year, Minnesota got off to a poor start in 2018 but has won seven of its last nine.

                          HIGHLIGHT

It doesn't get much better than a defensive gem to preserve a no-hitter. Seattle's Kyle Seager made a diving stop at third base on Kevin Pillar's shot down the line, then he popped up quickly and threw Pillar out at first in the seventh inning Tuesday night at Toronto. James Paxton was able to finish the no-hitter .

                          LINE OF THE WEEK

Believe it or not, it's not Paxton's no-hitter. Instead, the honor goes to Houston's George Springer, who went 6 for 6 with a homer in a 16-2 win over Oakland on Monday night.

                            • A's hit 3 solo homers as Manaea beats Red Sox again, 6-5
                              May 14, 2018

BOSTON (AP) Sean Manaea beat the Boston Red Sox again in his first outing against them since pitching a no-hitter, and Khris Davis hit one of three solo homers by the Oakland Athletics in a 6-5 victory Monday night.

Matt Joyce and Matt Olson also went deep for the A's, who had lost five of six to the Astros and Yankees. Davis connected for his team-leading 12th home run as Oakland handed Rick Porcello his first loss of the season.

J.D. Martinez and Rafael Devers each hit a solo shot for the Red Sox.

Manaea (5-4) allowed four runs - three earned - and eight hits in six-plus innings, snapping his two-game skid. He threw the seventh no-hitter in Oakland history at home against the Red Sox on April 21.

Blake Treinen got three outs for his seventh save.

Porcello (5-1) gave up five runs and nine hits over six innings.

                              BRAVES 6, CUBS 5

CHICAGO (AP) - Ozzie Albies hit a leadoff drive for his 13th homer, Jose Bautista belted a three-run shot and Atlanta held off Chicago.

Julio Teheran (4-1) pitched six innings and Tyler Flowers hit his first homer this season as NL-leading Atlanta (25-15) won for the sixth time in seven games. The surprising Braves moved 10 games over .500 for the first time since July 28, 2014.

A.J. Minter worked a shaky ninth inning for his second save in the makeup of an April 15 rainout. Minter hit Ian Happ with a pitch to force in a run with two outs, but Kris Bryant lined out to left field to end the game.

Bryant and Albert Almora Jr. each hit a two-run homer, but Jose Quintana (4-3) struggled for the Cubs.

The 21-year-old Albies drove Quintana's second pitch the opposite way into the bleachers in right for his fourth career leadoff homer. The rookie second baseman also doubled and singled.

                              RAYS 2, ROYALS 1

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) - Tampa Bay's Adeiny Hechavarria danced around catcher Salvador Perez with an inventive slide at home plate to score the go-ahead run.

Hechavarria dashed home on Matt Duffy's single to right field in the sixth inning, sidestepped Perez to the right, then dove back toward the plate. Hechavarria faked toward the dish with his right hand, then jabbed his left hand just past Perez's outstretched glove to touch the plate. Umpire Rob Drake immediately signaled safe.

Ryan Yarbrough (3-2) allowed one run over five innings for the Rays, and Duffy had three hits and drove in both runs. Alex Colome got his seventh save.

Eric Skoglund (1-3) permitted two runs in 7 2/3 innings, his longest career outing. He tied a Royals record with six assists by a pitcher.

                              TIGERS 6, INDIANS 3

DETROIT (AP) - Niko Goodrum homered twice and drove in five runs as injury-plagued Detroit beat Carlos Carrasco and Cleveland.

For the second straight day, the Tigers won despite fielding a patchwork lineup. Miguel Cabrera is on the disabled list, and Detroit has also been without Nicholas Castellanos and Jeimer Candelario.

Jose Ramirez hit his 13th homer for the Indians, but the AL Central leaders fell back to .500 and are only two games ahead of Detroit. Carrasco (5-2) allowed three runs and six hits in 6 2/3 innings.

Mike Fiers (4-2) yielded a run and three hits in six innings for Detroit.
