    • Thursday's Diamond Notes
      May 3, 2018

Hottest team: Yankees (11-1 last 12)

New York tries to close out this tough road trip on a high note with a victory at Houston. The Yankees entered the swing on a six-game winning streak, and remained on fire by pulling out a three-game sweep of the Angels in Anaheim. New York had its nine-game hot streak snapped in Monday’s 2-1 setback at Houston, but rebounded with consecutive 4-0 shutouts. Luis Severino tossed a complete-game shutout on Wednesday, while striking out 10 batters to avenge a pair of losses to the Astros in last season’s ALCS.

Masahiro Tanaka takes the mound in Thursday’s matinee as the Yankees’ right-hander is coming off a pair of dominating performances in his last two starts. Tanaka scattered a total of five hits and two earned runs in 12 innings in victories over the Twins and Angels, while the Yankees are 3-0 in his three road outings.

Coldest team: Orioles (2-8 last 10)

Baltimore’s abysmal season continues as the Orioles dropped their eighth consecutive road game on Wednesday, 10-7 to the Angels. The final score is misleading as Baltimore scored five runs in the ninth inning, while Dylan Bundy allowed seven runs in 4.1 innings of work in his second straight poor outing.

The Orioles not only try to avoid getting swept on the road for the fourth time this season, but also seek their first win away from Camden Yards since April 8. Chris Tillman was knocked around in his first four starts this season, but the Baltimore right-hander is coming off one of his best outings ever by tossing seven scoreless innings and giving up one hit in a 6-0 victory against Detroit his last time out.

Hottest pitcher: Trevor Williams, Pirates (4-1, 2.29 ERA)

Pittsburgh looks to avoid the sweep against Washington after getting blasted by the Nationals on Wednesday, 12-3. Williams has tossed six innings in five of six starts this season, as Pittsburgh owns a 4-2 record in those outings. The right-hander has yielded four hits or fewer in four straight starts, while also giving up seven earned runs in this stretch. The Pirates finished 1-6 in Williams’ final seven road starts in 2017, but Pittsburgh has won two of his three road outings this season.

Coldest pitcher: Alex Wood, Dodgers (0-3, 4.11 ERA)

Los Angeles has dug themselves a substantial hole in the NL West standings behind Arizona to start the season. The Dodgers picked up only their second win over the Diamondbacks in nine tries in Wednesday’s 2-1 triumph at Chase Field as Wood squares off opposite Arizona’s Patrick Corbin for the second time this season. In the first meeting April 4, the D-backs blanked the Dodgers, 3-0 as Wood allowed three runs in six innings. Wood owns a solid 30/3 strikeout to walk ratio this season, but yielded four earned runs in six innings of an 8-3 setback at San Francisco his last time out after getting staked an early 2-0 lead.

Biggest OVER run: Rangers (7-2-1 last 10)

Texas returns home following a 3-3 road swing at Toronto and Cleveland, but the Rangers’ pitching staff allowed 32 runs in the final four games. The offense showed signs of life in the three wins by plating 21 runs, but dug themselves an early 9-1 hole in Wednesday’s 12-4 drubbing to the Indians. The task doesn’t get easier as the Red Sox visit Arlington for a four-game set starting Thursday. Mike Minor has received at least five runs of support in three of his last four outings for Texas, but the Rangers are 2-1 to the UNDER in his three home starts.

Biggest UNDER run: White Sox (6-1-1 last eight)

Chicago started its rare five-game series at Kansas City with three consecutive victories, but lost the final two contests, followed by a pair of one-run setbacks at St. Louis. The pitching staff held the Cardinals’ lineup in check in a pair of 3-2 losses, but the offense has scored two runs in three of the past four contests. The White Sox return home to host the struggling Twins, as right-hander Reynaldo Lopez brings his 1.78 ERA to the mound for Chicago. The Sox have turned into a solid OVER play in home series openers this season with a 4-0 mark.

Matchup to watch: Athletics vs. Mariners

Oakland and Seattle conclude their three-game series at Safeco Field after the two AL West squads split the first two contests. The Mariners pulled away for a 6-3 victory on Tuesday, but the A’s rebounded with a 3-2 triumph as +160 underdogs on Wednesday by rallying for three runs in the final two innings.

The A’s send out the red-hot Sean Manaea looking for the series victory, coming off three straight wins. Manaea tossed the first no-hitter of the season in a 3-0 shutout of the Red Sox as a +150 underdog on April 21 and followed that performance up with an 8-1 win over the Astros as a +165 road ‘dog. The southpaw started this hot stretch by yielding two hits and one earned run in seven innings of a 2-1 victory at Seattle on April 15.

The Mariners counter with another left-hander in Wade Leblanc, who is making his first start of the season after five relief appearances. Since starting the season at 4-1 as a home underdog, Seattle has dropped four of its past five in this role, while losing five of its previous seven games at Safeco Field overall.

Betcha didn’t know: The Braves are turning into a factor in the NL East race, at least early on this season. Atlanta owns an 18-11 record and sits in first place of the division after shutting out the Mets on Wednesday. The Braves seek the series sweep on Thursday afternoon as Atlanta has compiled a perfect 8-0 record in Game 3’s of a series this season.

Biggest public favorite: Red Sox (-145) at Rangers

Biggest public underdog: Dodgers (+110) at Diamondbacks

Biggest line move: Mariners (+115 to +110) vs. Athletics

        • Yankees rally past Astros for wild 6-5 win
          May 3, 2018

ANAHEIM, Calif. (AP) Albert Pujols had a two-run double for his 2,999th career hit, and Luis Valbuena and Andrelton Simmons drove in three runs apiece in the Los Angeles Angels' 12-3 victory over the Baltimore Orioles on Thursday night.

Pujols did not get a hit in his final three plate appearances after moving to the brink of the 3,000-hit club in the second inning. He gets another chance Friday in Seattle.

Angels rookie right-hander Jaime Barria (2-1) took a no-hitter into the sixth inning of his third career start, finishing with six innings of four-hit ball.

Manny Machado drove in two runs for the last-place Orioles, who have lost 15 of 18. Chris Tillman (1-5) recorded just three outs and was charged with seven runs.

          MARINERS 4, ATHLETICS 1

SEATTLE (AP) - Dee Gordon had a big night on the bases, Nelson Cruz hit a two-run homer and the Mariners won their first game since Ichiro Suzuki was moved from the roster to the front office.

Hours after the Mariners announced Suzuki's new role for the rest of 2018, Gordon gave the longtime Japanese star a fitting tribute. With ''Thanks 51'' written on his cap, Gordon went 3 for 4, stole two bases and scored twice.

Chasen Bradford (3-0) pitched 2 1/3 innings for the win, and Edwin Diaz handled the ninth for his major league-leading 13th save.

Oakland ace Sean Manaea (4-3) gave up four runs and six hits in six innings.

          YANKEES 6, ASTROS 5

HOUSTON (AP) - Aroldis Chapman struck out AL MVP Jose Altuve on three straight 101 mph fastballs with two on to end the game, and the Yankees got a key hit from rookie Gleyber Torres during a three-run rally in the ninth inning.

The Yankees won a wild one to take three of four from the team that beat them in Game 7 of the AL Championship Series last October.

New York took a 3-0 lead into the seventh, trailed 5-3 going into the ninth and let a bounced third strike give the Astros their final chance.

Evan Gattis fanned but reached on Chapman's two-out wild pitch, and George Springer followed with a single. Altuve went down swinging, giving Chapman his seventh save.

Chasen Shreve (1-0) got the last two outs of the eighth for the win. Will Harris (1-2) got the loss.

          NATIONALS 3, PIRATES 1

WASHINGTON (AP) - Trea Turner and Ryan Zimmerman homered in the sixth inning, helping Washington complete a four-game series sweep.

Jeremy Hellickson and four relievers combined on a five-hitter for Washington, which has won a season-high five in a row.

Sammy Solis (1-1) retired the only batter he faced, ending the sixth to keep the game scoreless. Sean Doolittle recorded the last five outs for his sixth save.

Pittsburgh's Trevor Williams (4-2) allowed only two runners over the first five innings. Wilmer Difo led off with a single, and after Bryce Harper flied out, Turner hit his second home run of the season.

Two batters later, Zimmerman connected for his fifth homer.

          BRAVES 11, METS 0

NEW YORK (AP) - Julio Teheran took a no-hit bid into the seventh inning, 20-year-old Ronald Acuna Jr. hit his second big league home run and Atlanta finished a three-game sweep that vaulted the young Braves into the NL East lead.

Kurt Suzuki, Acuna and Nick Markakis homered as Atlanta built a 6-0 lead against Jason Vargas (0-2), and 21-year-old Ozzie Albies went deep off an equally shaky Matt Harvey.

The Braves opened a 1 1/2-game division lead, the latest in a season they have been in first place since July 20, 2014.

Teheran (2-1) was virtually untouchable until Asdrubal Cabrera doubled down the right field line with two outs in the seventh.

          DODGERS 5, DIAMONDBACKS 2

PHOENIX (AP) - Arizona reliever Jorge De La Rosa threw a pair of run-scoring wild pitches during an eighth-inning rally that sent the Dodgers to the victory.

The Dodgers scored four times in the eighth and handed Arizona its first two-game losing streak this year. The four-game split ended the Diamondbacks' string of nine straight series victories to start the season.

J.T. Chargois (1-0) pitched a scoreless seventh to get the victory. Kenley Jansen earned his fifth save with a perfect ninth.

Fernando Salas (3-2) got the loss.

          BLUE JAYS 13, INDIANS 11, 11 INNINGS, GAME 1

          INDIANS 13, BLUE JAYS 4, GAME 2

CLEVELAND (AP) - Jose Ramirez hit a two-run homer and Adam Plutko won his first major league start as Cleveland split an extra-long doubleheader with Toronto.

The victory in the second game was No. 1,500 for Terry Francona, who became the 24th manager to reach the milestone.

Erik Gonzalez had four RBIs for Cleveland. Plutko (1-0) allowing three runs - all on homers - and six hits in 7 1/3 innings.

Blue Jays right-hander Joe Biagini (0-1) was tagged for 10 hits and six runs in 4 1/3 innings.

In the opener, Toronto's Yangervis Solarte hit his first career grand slam with two outs in the 11th inning. Solarte went 8 for 10 with seven RBIs in the doubleheader.

Tim Mayza (1-0), Toronto's sixth reliever, pitched one inning for the win.

Francisco Lindor homered twice for the Indians. Tyler Olson (0-1) got the loss.

          RANGERS 11, RED SOX 5

ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) - Nomar Mazara drove in five runs while homering in his third straight game, and the Rangers handed former AL Cy Young Award winner David Price his third loss in a row.

Mazara hit a two-run double off Price (2-4) in the third. He belted a towering three-run homer in the fourth as the first batter after Price was pulled from the game. Mazara's sixth homer gave Texas a 10-3 lead.

Mookie Betts connected again for Boston in the third, his major league-leading 12th homer coming a day after he went deep three times at Fenway Park against Kansas City. Betts also had a two-run double and a sacrifice fly.

Mike Minor (3-1) worked six innings for the win.

          WHITE SOX 6, TWINS 5

CHICAGO (AP) - Trayce Thompson homered with two out in the ninth, and the White Sox stopped a four-game slide.

Thompson connected against former White Sox reliever Addison Reed (0-2), driving a 3-1 pitch 403 feet to left. It was Thompson's third homer in 43 at-bats this season and third game-ending shot of his career.

Chicago trailed 5-1 in the fourth inning. Nate Jones (2-0) got the win, retiring his only batter.

Logan Morrison went deep in his first three-hit game for the Twins.

          ROYALS 10, TIGERS 6

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) - Lucas Duda had three hits and drove in four runs, leading Kansas City to the victory.

Salvador Perez, Jorge Soler and Alex Gordon homered for the Royals, who have quietly gotten on track offensively after a miserable start.

Kansas City pounded out 13 hits in all against Mike Fiers and the Tigers' bullpen. Reliever Chad Bell (0-1) allowed five runs and five hits in 1 2/3 innings.

Eric Skoglund wasn't much better on the mound for Kansas City, but Kyle McCarthy (3-0) wiggled out of a key sixth-inning jam before pitching a clean seventh to earn the victory in relief.

Detroit slugger Miguel Cabrera left with a strained hamstring in the sixth inning. He planned to test it on Friday.

Friday’s List of 13: Questions, questions, always questions……..

              13) Why do baseball teams in New York City, Boston, Philly and Washington all have new managers this year, none of whom ever managed in the majors before?

Its like all of a sudden the over-educated geniuses in the front office decided that a manager is an overrated thing. There is a human element in sports that should never be discounted, even though it can’t really be quantified.

              12) Why does an NFL prospect jump up the draft charts so far, from the time the college season ends to the draft? Games should count more than workouts.

If the NFL Draft had been held on February 1st, I don’t think Baker Mayfield is the #1 pick.

              11) Why didn’t the Twins put a retractable dome on their ballpark? If you look at attendance in Milwaukee, Twins are losing out on 300-400,000 paid admissions a year by not having a roof.

              10) Shouldn’t high school basketball players be able to go pro right from high school, the way baseball players can?

              9) If baseball expands to 32 teams, would they dare expand to Montreal and Monterrey, MX in the same year. Seems like Portland, OR wants a team; wonder if the A’s would go there?

              8) Why are the NHL’s Las Vegas Golden Knights so good? They’re the most successful expansion team in the history of the four major sports.

              7) Why do some teams bat their pitchers 8th? It makes no sense. No one has done it in a playoff game, which tells me it is a gimmick no one truly believes in.

              6) Should a convicted felon be allowed to hold political office in this country?

              5) Shouldn’t baseball writers be able to come up with more interesting stories on April 30 than their annual speculation on which big-money teams will poach good players from small market teams at the trade deadline, which is July 31?

              4) Shouldn’t the NBA move its draft around the country, like the NHL and NFL do? Seems to generate lot of interest in the host city.

              3) Why does only one league have the DH? Who thought that was a good idea?

              2) Why doesn’t every college student take a money management course? Wouldn’t that be a good thing to be well-versed in when you get out in the real world? Managing your time and your money are very important.

              1) Why did the Red Sox fire Terry Francona as their manager? Guy won them two World Series after a drought of almost 100 years, and they get rid of the guy after 89-73/90-72 seasons.

              • LEADING OFF: Dodgers-Padres in Mexico, Kingham pitches again
                May 3, 2018

A look at what's happening all around the majors Friday:

                MEXICAN FLAVOR

Major League Baseball returns to Mexico in the regular season for the first time in nearly two decades when the Los Angeles Dodgers and San Diego play a three-game series in Monterrey. It'll be a matchup of promising rookies when Joey Lucchesi starts for the Padres against Walker Buehler at Estadio de Beisbol Monterrey.

The previous visit was opening day in 1999 when Mexican native Vinny Castilla helped Colorado top the Padres. The first trip was in 1996, with Mexican star Fernando Valenzuela leading San Diego over the Mets to begin a three-game series.

                ENCORE, ENCORE

Pirates rookie Nick Kingham makes his second career start. His first one went pretty well - in his major league debut last weekend, he took a perfect game into the seventh inning against St. Louis before it was broken up. The 26-year-old right pitches vs. the Brewers at Miller Park.

                LOOKING GOOD

The Atlanta Braves - the NL East-leading Atlanta Braves - return to SunTrust Park to host San Francisco. Fueled by Ronald Acuna Jr., Ozzie Albies and Mike Soroka, the three youngest players in the majors, Atlanta has won five in a row.

This is the latest in a season the Braves have been in first place since July 20, 2014. Mike Foltynewicz starts against the Giants.

                WELCOME BACK

Kris Medlen is set to start for Arizona at Minute Maid Park against the Astros. The 32-year-old righty last pitched in the majors in 2016 with Kansas City. He's been beset by injuries, including a pair of Tommy John surgeries, since coming up with Atlanta in 2009. Gerrit Cole (2-1, 1.73 ERA) starts for Houston. Cole set the AL record for strikeouts in April with 61.

                MISSING MIGGY

Tigers slugger Miguel Cabrera's return to the lineup was brief. After missing three games with spasms in his biceps, he made an early exit Thursday because of a strained hamstring. He'll test it before Detroit plays again in Kansas City.

                • Friday's Diamond Notes
                  May 3, 2018

Hottest team: Yankees (12-1 last 13)

New York finished off an incredible road trip by posting a 6-1 record against the Angels and Astros. The Yankees had their nine-game winning streak snapped in Monday’s 2-1 defeat at Houston, but rebounded with consecutive shutouts and wrapped up the series by rallying for a 6-5 triumph on Thursday. The Bronx Bombers overcame a 5-3 ninth inning deficit to pick up the series victory and pull within 1 ½ games of first-place Boston in the AL East.

The Yankees return home to face the Indians in an AL Wild Card rematch as New York erased a 2-0 series deficit to advance to the American League Championship Series last October. CC Sabathia squares off against his former team in the series opener as the veteran southpaw is fresh off victories against Twins and Angels. In Sabathia’s last eight home starts dating back to last August, the Yankees own a 7-1 record.

Coldest team: Padres (4-11 last 15)

Since taking three of four from the Giants in mid-April, the Padres has lost five consecutive series. San Francisco picked up revenge on San Diego by capturing two of three matchups at AT&T Park this week, including Wednesday’s 9-4 victory by the Giants in the series finale. The Padres travel to Monterrey, Mexico to battle the Dodgers, who swept San Diego at Chavez Ravine last month, while Los Angeles racked up 30 runs.

San Diego sends out its best pitcher as Joey Lucchesi seeks his fourth victory. The left-hander owns a 3-1 record in his last four starts, including home blowout wins over the Mets and Giants. The Padres will look to turn around an 0-5 record in home series openers in 2018, while scoring three runs or less four times in this span.

Hottest pitcher: J.A. Happ, Blue Jays (4-1, 3.50 ERA)

Since losing his season opening start to the Yankees, Happ has performed well on the mound with Toronto posting a 5-0 record in his last five starts. The southpaw has struck out at least nine batters in four of his past five outings, while allowing a total of three earned runs in his last two starts against the Red Sox and Rangers. Toronto travels to Tampa Bay on Friday as Happ didn’t face the Rays last season, but the left-hander struggled in 2016 against their division rivals as the Jays went 2-3 in those games.

Coldest pitcher: Jose Berrios, Twins (2-3, 3.63 ERA)

Berrios turned in two terrific outings against the White Sox and Indians in mid-April by tossing identical lines of seven scoreless innings and allowing three hits. However, the Minnesota right-hander has been knocked around in his last two starts against the Yankees and Reds by yielding nine earned runs in 11 hits in a pair of losses. Berrios gets another crack at the White Sox on Friday, who he beat 4-0 on April 12 and struck out a season-high 11 batters.

Biggest OVER run: Indians (8-0 last eight)

Cleveland began the season by cashing six consecutive home UNDERS, but the Indians have hit the OVER in nine of the past 10 games at Progressive Field. The Indians lost the front end of a make-up double-header with the Blue Jays on Thursday, 13-11 in 11 innings as Cleveland has allowed at least 10 runs four times on its homestand. Josh Tomlin has sailed OVER the total in three of four starts for the Indians this season as the right-hander has given up at least five earned runs three times.

Biggest UNDER run: Tigers (6-2 last eight)

Although Detroit and Kansas City easily cashed the OVER on Thursday, the Tigers have put together a solid UNDER run. Prior to allowing 10 runs to the Royals in the series opener, Detroit pitching had given up six runs in the previous three games against the Rays. Francisco Liriano is making his third start against the Royals this season, as the southpaw has allowed four earned runs in 12 innings of work.

Matchup to watch: Cubs vs. Cardinals

The NL Central race is tight through one month as four teams are separated by two games. The Brewers are the leaders by one-half game over the Cardinals and a one-game edge over the Cubs in spite of losing seven of eight matchups to Chicago.

The Cardinals bounced back from getting swept by the Pirates last weekend to grab a pair of one-run victories over the White Sox. St. Louis continues its homestand against the other Chicago squad as the two teams split a pair of matchups at Wrigley Field in mid-April, while two other contests were postponed due to bad weather.

Miles Mikolas takes the mound for the Cardinals as the right-hander has been a hidden gem for St. Louis. Mikolas owns a 27/2 strikeout to walk ratio, while he has tossed seven innings in three straight outings. Unfortunately, Mikolas was staked to a 5-0 lead against the Pirates last Friday before the bullpen melted down and Pittsburgh rallied for a 6-5 win in extra innings.

The Cubs began their seven-game homestand with five consecutive victories before dropping the final two games to the Rockies. Jose Quintana turned in his best start of the season against Milwaukee last Saturday in a 3-0 home win by scattering two hits in seven scoreless innings. The Cubs own a 4-1 record in Quintana’s five starts this season, while Chicago beat St. Louis in both of the southpaw’s starts last season.

Betcha didn’t know: The Diamondbacks and Astros hook up for an intriguing interleague series in Phoenix this weekend. It’s premature to call this a World Series preview although both squads have reached the 20-win plateau along with the Red Sox and Yankees. Arizona has done most of its damage in series openers by putting together a remarkable 9-1 record in Game 1’s, although the D-backs are huge underdogs against Astros' ace Gerrit Cole.

Biggest public favorite: Astros (-190) at Diamondbacks

Biggest public underdog: Rockies (+115) at Mets

Biggest line move: Mariners (+120 to +112) vs. Angels

“Honestly, and this is maybe not something I should say, but my gut tells me that the best decision might be to move the team. I say that only because I look at the example of the Miami Marlins, and (a new stadium) didn’t really solve their attendance issues. So from purely an attendance standpoint, somewhere else might be better.”

Sunday’s List of 13: Nobody asked me, but…….

                        13) Just who was Wally Pipp? You hear his name invoked even today, anytime a guy takes a day off due to injury and his replacement has a big day.

Back in 1925, 32-year old Pipp was the regular 1B in New York; he missed a game one day and a guy named Lou Gehrig took his place and never gave the job back. That winter, Cincinnati paid $7,500 for Pipp’s contract; he played three years for the Reds, then retired.

                        12) In a 15-year career, Pipp hit .281 with a .341 OB%; he never made an All-Star team, but led the AL in home runs twice, in 1916-17, with 12 and 9 homers. Seriously.

                        11) There was a kerfuffle on Twitter this week when FOX cancelled a TV show called Brooklyn Nine-Nine, which I’ve never seen. Show had been on FOX for five years. So much fuss was made that Brooklyn Nine-Nine was later picked up by NBC, which made the people who complained very happy.

Happy is good. We need more happy.

                        10) Then there is Lions’ coach Matt Patricia and his 1996 arrest that never went to trial.

According to the Detroit Free Press, the prosecution had a witness list that included a nurse, a doctor, a police detective, a police officer and a college friend of the alleged victim- there apparently was medical evidence, but the case never went to trial.

The Lions are standing by Patricia for now, but the NFL is still investigating.

                        9) 262 players made their major league debuts last season.

                        8) Coming into Saturday’s game, Aaron Judge had a .312 career batting average at home, compared to .239 on the road.

This season, he has 10 HR’s, 30 RBI at home, one homer, four RBI on the road.

                        7) Pretty good weekend to go to the ballpark if you’re a fan of the Rancho Cucamonga Quakes in the California League; Logan Forsythe batted 2nd, Justin Turner 3rd for the Quakes as they rehab from injuries. Not often you see major leaguers in the California League.

                        6) A man in Texas turned 112 years old Saturday; Richard Overton, America’s oldest living WWII combat veteran, celebrated his birthday. Congrats to him.

                        5) Shohei Ohtani has DH’d in 17 games this season, but when he pitches, he doesn’t bat.

                        4) Baseball stuff:
                        — San Diego Padres DFA’d 3B Chase Headley, brought Cory Spangenberg up from AAA.
                        — Brewers’ ace Chase Anderson (illness) was scratched from his start in Denver.
                        — Nationals put 1B Ryan Zimmerman on the DL.

By the way, the genius who runs the Padres took on $13M of Chase Headley’s salary to also acquire P Bryan Mitchell, who is 0-3, 6.21 in eight games (7 starts) this year. Brilliant.

                        3) Webb Simpson leads by seven shots. No player in the history of the PGA Tour has ever lost with a 54-hole lead of seven shots or more.

                        2) Former NBA player Kwame Brown is suing Merrill Lynch, saying the brokerage stole $17.4 million of his investments.

Brown, who made $63,992,852 in salary as a player in the NBA, claims that his signature was forged on various authorization forms and agreements, allowing his financial adviser to make investments and stock trades without his consent.

                        1) Dick Vitale’s annual event to fight cancer raised $3.7M Friday night; this event has now raised a total of $25.7M over the years to fight cancer, mostly pediatric cancer. Good for him.

                        • LEADING OFF: Zobrist told to change spikes; Nats seek sweep
                          May 12, 2018

                          YIKES, SPIKES!

Ben Zobrist of the Chicago Cubs and Major League Baseball are at odds over his spikes. Zobrist says he's worn black cleats in day games at Wrigley Field for the past two years to honor the sport's past. But the traditional look drew a letter from MLB, saying his cleats must be at least 51 percent blue - the Cubs' color - and warned he could be fined and disciplined if he doesn't comply.

Fans at Wrigley will see what Zobrist wears when the Cubs host the White Sox.

                          SWEPT AWAY?

The Diamondbacks hadn't lost a series all season before the surging Nationals arrived in Arizona. Now the D'Backs are seeking to avoid a four-game sweep after scoring just one run in each of their first three games against Washington. The Nationals have won 12 of 14 to get close to first-place Atlanta in the NL East, while Arizona continues to lead the NL Central. Jeremy Hellickson (1-0, 2.28 ERA), Washington's fifth starter who allowed just two hits in his previous outing, starts in the Sunday night game against Arizona's Zack Godley (4-2, 3.83), whose last win came on April 27 against the Nationals.

                          HE'S BACK

Adam Wainwright returns to the St. Louis rotation when he starts at San Diego. The longtime Cardinals ace hasn't pitched since April 17. He's been out with inflammation in his right elbow, which underwent surgery in the offseason. The 36-year-old Wainwright is 1-2 with a 3.45 ERA this season.

                          RIVALS IN FRONT

As they have since Thursday, the Red Sox and Yankees share baseball's best record. Both teams are 27-12 and will go for series wins on Sunday, with Boston at Toronto and New York hosting Oakland.
