    • MLB system turns profit for bettor “who couldn’t pick a game to save his life”
      Ashton Grewal

“I couldn’t pick a game to save my life,” user Cisco said. “If I pick a game, I lose.” So he uses a system where he fades bad teams coming off big wins instead.

Not all baseball players are born with the same gifts. For every home run hunter – like Adam Dunn – out there, there is another guy – think Ichiro – choking up on the bat and trying to slap a ball through a hole in the infield. Both methods can be productive when done right, and there’s room for both types of batters on a major league roster.

The same can be said about betting on baseball. There are those who read the local beat writers, monitor the weather or handicap the umpire calling balls and strikes to help inform their decisions when betting the daily baseball board.

And then there are those like longtime user Cisco.

“I couldn’t pick a game to save my life,” Cisco said. “If I pick a game, I lose.”

Cisco is one of the many bettors who employ trial and tested systems to help beat the sportsbooks. He uses many different systems for multiple sports and he shares his results with the tight-knitted community in the Systems and Strategies forum.

His favorite sport is baseball and one of his most successful MLB strategy is a chase system which involves fading bad (.470 or worse win percentage) teams coming off a five-run win. He uses Pinnacle’s World Series odds for the first month of the season when winning percentages are highly volatile to identify the 10 worst teams. Those teams were the Braves, White Sox, Reds, Tigers, Royals, Marlins, Athletics, Phillies, Pirates and Padres this year.

There are a few other rules to this system:

      1. This is a four-game chase system, which means the bettor must continue his wager until earning a one unit win.

      2. The first play doesn’t begin until two games following the five-run win by sub .470 win percentage club. This is rule was added to avoid getting burnt by a bad team enjoying a bit of momentum at the plate.

      3. If our future fade team wins again by five or more runs again, we must sit out an additional two games. This happened for the first chase of the system this season. The Detroit Tigers won 6-1 on April 2nd then won by the same score three games later.

      4. Players following Cisco’s system would have lost when the Tigers beat the Chicago White Sox on April 7th but then won on the continuation play on April 10th when the Cleveland Indians topped the Tigers 2-1.

      5. A team will be eliminated from the spot bet if they win during the sit period and go above .470 win percentage.

      6. The system calls on betting underdogs on the runline and favorites on the moneyline with an opportunity to middle when two sub .470 clubs coming off five-run wins meet up. In this case, Cisco bets the favorite on the moneyline, the underdog on the runline and hopes for a one-run win for the favored club.

The system is 10-1 after the first month of the regular season with seven of the wins coming in the Game 1 of the chase. No system, as Cisco says, is foolproof. The Oakland Athletics’ hot play at the end of April produced his first loss of the season. The chase ends after four kicks at the can. And that’s the downfall of the chase system; when you lose, you lose big.

Cisco says his system went 76-1 last season with 32.15 unit won. He has all the current season information available on a shared sheet and several other community members check in from time to time.

He started coming here at the beginning of the 2000s and there he found a community of bettors who used different strategies than just eyeballing the board. Cisco started developing his strategies with encouragement from other users around 2005.

On the sheet you’ll see strategies on other sports like NBA and NFL as well as another MLB chase system involving home favorites. They’ve all been developed over the years by a guy who loves betting on sports but who can’t pick a game to save his life.

“I made my first bet on the White Sox in 1987,” Cisco says. “They won and I was hooked.”

        • Pirates' Kingham takes perfect game into 7th in MLB debut
          April 29, 2018

PITTSBURGH (AP) Nick Kingham carried a perfect game into the seventh inning in his major league debut to lead the Pittsburgh Pirates to their fifth straight win, 5-0 over the St. Louis Cardinals on Sunday.

Kingham, a 26-year-old rookie right-hander, retired 20 straight before Paul DeJong singled down the left-field line with two outs in the seventh. He finished with one hit and nine strikeouts on 98 pitches (72 strikes) after being recalled from Triple-A Indianapolis earlier in the day.

He joined Johnny Cueto as the only pitchers in the last 100 years with one hit allowed, at least nine strikeouts and zero walks in a debut.

Luke Weaver (2-2) took the loss after allowing four runs and six hits with six strikeouts in 5 1/3 innings.

          RED SOX 4, RAYS 3

BOSTON (AP) - Sandy Leon hit a go-ahead RBI single with two outs in the eighth inning against Tampa Bay closer Alex Colome (2-3), helping the Red Sox snap the Rays' eight-game winning streak.

J.D. Martinez had four singles and drove in two runs for the Red Sox, but misplayed a fly ball into a double that put runners on second and third in the eighth before Craig Kimbrel (1-1) struck out Brad Miller to end the inning.

Denard Span hit a two-run homer and made a leaping catch in front of the Green Monster for the Rays, who had their third-longest winning streak in team history halted. Tampa Bay won nine straight in 2014 and 12 in `04.

Red Sox starter Rick Porcello gave up three runs and seven hits with six strikeouts and no walks over 7 2/3 innings.

          CUBS 2, BREWERS 0

CHICAGO (AP) - Tyler Chatwood pitched seven sparkling innings and helped himself with an RBI single, leading the Cubs to a sweep of the four-game series between NL Central rivals.

Chatwood (2-3) allowed two hits, struck out four and walked three in his second straight win. Carl Edwards Jr. worked the eighth and Brandon Morrow got three outs for his seventh save in seven chances, finishing Chicago's second straight shutout and its fifth just this month against Milwaukee.

Zach Davies (2-3) kept Milwaukee in the game for most of the day, but Chicago got to the right-hander for a run in the fifth and sixth.

          ORIOLES 5, TIGERS 3

BALTIMORE (AP) - Substitute starter Pedro Alvarez hit two home runs, Trey Mancini had a solo shot and the Orioles beat the Detroit Tigers for their first home series win of the season.

Kevin Gausman (2-2) allowed one run and five hits over 5 2/3 innings for the Orioles, who took two of three from Detroit following a five-game skid.

Mancini hit his first career leadoff homer on the third pitch from Daniel Norris (0-2) and Alvarez connected with a man on in the second inning for a 3-0 lead.

After the Tigers closed to 4-3, Alvarez hit a pitch from Joe Jimenez over the right-field scoreboard in the eighth. Alvarez was inserted into the lineup at third base just before the game after Danny Valencia was scratched.

          BLUE JAYS 7, RANGERS 2

TORONTO (AP) - Kevin Pillar homered for the third time in two games, J.A. Happ (4-1) pitched seven innings to win his fourth straight decision and the Blue Jays beat the Texas Rangers to avoid a three-game sweep.

Teoscar Hernandez and Yangervis Solarte added solo homers off Martin Perez (2-3) as the Blue Jays snapped a four-game home losing streak and won for the third time in their past 10.

Blue Jays outfielder Randal Grichuk made the defensive play of the game, an inning-ending double play in the first. A diving Grichuk managed to cradle Isiah Kiner-Falefa's sinking liner between his forearm and his chest, then threw to second base to double off Delino DeShields.

          MARINERS 10, INDIANS 4

CLEVELAND (AP) - Ryon Healy hit two home runs and had four RBIs, Robinson Cano and Mitch Haniger also homered, and the Seattle Mariners defeated the Indians.

Healy had an RBI double in the second inning, hit a solo homer in the sixth and added a two-run shot in the eighth. Cano hit a two-run homer during Seattle's five-run second. Haniger's solo shot in the ninth was his 10th, tied for the major league lead.

Cano's drive to right off Josh Tomlin (0-4), his third homer this year, finished off the big inning for the Mariners, who had four straight two-out RBI hits. Marco Gonzales (3-2) allowed two runs in six innings before four relievers finished up.

          MARLINS 3, ROCKIES 0

MIAMI (AP) - Caleb Smith allowed two hits in seven innings for his first career victory, and the Marlins took the rubber game of their low-scoring series against Colorado.

Smith (1-3), who entered the game with an ERA of 5.82, struck out nine and walked one in the longest outing of his career. The breakthrough victory came in his 15th career appearance, including eight starts. Drew Steckenrider struck out the side in the eighth, and Brad Ziegler pitched the ninth for his third save.

Chad Bettis (3-1) went seven innings and allowed two runs, including Miguel Rojas' solo homer.

The Marlins outscored Colorado 7-2 in the series, including Miami's 1-0 loss Friday. The Rockies had 15 hits in the series.

          BRAVES 10, PHILLIES 1

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Ronald Acuna Jr. doubled twice and reached base four times to cap a successful first week in the majors, and the Atlanta Braves cruised with a new lineup to a victory over the Phillies.

Acuna, at 20 the youngest player in the big leagues, hit second behind 21-year-old Ozzie Albies, the second-youngest major leaguer. Albies drilled the game's first pitch for a homer, added a two-run double and scored three runs. Acuna had an RBI double in the eighth, walked twice and stole his first base.

Johan Camargo hit a three-run homer and Ender Inciarte, dropped from first to ninth in the order, tripled in a five-run third inning off Vince Velasquez (1-4) in the Braves' fourth win in five games. Brandon McCarthy (4-0) allowed one run and five hits while striking out six in 5 1/3 innings for his third win over Philadelphia this season.

          NATIONALS 3, DIAMONDBACKS 1

WASHINGTON (AP) - Gio Gonzalez struck out eight over seven strong innings, Matt Wieters and Michael A. Taylor homered and the Nationals beat the Arizona Diamondbacks.

The Diamondbacks lost starter Robbie Ray to a strained oblique muscle in the second inning. He was replaced by T.J. McFarland, who surrendered a home run to Wieters to give the Nationals a 1-0 lead. McFarland (1-1) then loaded the bases and bobbled a grounder to allow another run to score. Taylor homered off McFarland with one out in the third.

Arizona didn't score off Gonzalez (3-2) until the seventh inning, when it put the first two men on base and pushed a run across on Daniel Descalso's one-out sacrifice fly. Sean Doolittle pitched the ninth for his fifth save.

          ASTROS 8, ATHLETICS 4

HOUSTON (AP) - Gerrit Cole struck out 12 while working into the seventh inning, George Springer and Jose Altuve each drove in two runs and the Astros beat the Oakland Athletics.

After Cole allowed the tying run on his 99th and final pitch, the Astros took advantage of two errors in the bottom of the seventh - among Oakland's four on the afternoon - to pull away. Cole gave up three runs and six hits and walked none in 6 2/3 innings. Will Harris (1-1) recorded the final out in the seventh to pick up the win.

Houston scored the go-ahead run when Brian McCann hit a popup to shallow right field that bounced off shortstop Marcus Semien's glove, allowing Alex Bregman to score.

Oakland starter Trevor Cahill (1-1) allowed four runs and four hits, struck out five and walked one in six innings.

          REDS 8, TWINS 2

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) - Tyler Mahle pitched into the seventh inning in another impressive start, Jose Peraza had three hits and Adam Duvall homered, leading the Cincinnati Reds past the Twins.

Mahle (2-3) cruised through the Twins' lineup in his second straight solid outing. After striking out 11 against Atlanta in his most recent start, Mahle gave up one run in 6 1/3 innings, allowing four hits and two walks while striking out seven.

Twins starter Jose Berrios (2-3) struggled with his command and the Reds made him pay. The 23-year-old right-hander walked three and allowed five hits in three innings, his shortest start of the season. He also didn't strike out a batter for the first time in 15 starts.

          ROYALS 5, WHITE SOX 4

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) - Cheslor Cuthbert homered twice and drove in four runs as the Royals won consecutive games for the first time this season.

Whit Merrifield singled home Alcides Escobar, who was hit by a pitch to lead off the eighth inning, with the go-ahead run off Bruce Rondon (1-1). Escobar left in the ninth with a left hand contusion.

Cuthbert, who had not homered since August 20 - a span on 109 at-bats - drove Hector Santiago's pitch into the White Sox bullpen in the fourth. He homered in the fifth with Salvador Perez and Jorge Soler aboard off Chris Volstad.

Brandon McCarthy (2-0) picked up the victory, while Blaine Boyer logged his fifth career save - and his first since May 29, 2016, while with Milwaukee.

          METS 14, PADRES 2

SAN DIEGO (AP) - Adrian Gonzalez homered, doubled and drove in five runs against his former team, and Zack Wheeler struck out nine in five innings for the New York Mets.

The 14 runs and 19 hits were season highs for the Mets, who took two of three in San Diego. The Mets batted around in both the seventh and eighth innings, scoring five runs each time. Todd Frazier hit a two-run homer and Jose Reyes hit a solo shot.

The 35-year-old Gonzalez played for his hometown Padres from 2006 until being traded to Boston on Dec. 6, 2010.

Wheeler (2-1) allowed two runs and six hits in five innings and walked two. Bryan Mitchell (0-3) allowed four runs and five hits in 4 2/3 innings.

          GIANTS 4, DODGERS 2

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) - Evan Longoria hit a three-run homer in the first inning and Ty Blach made the early lead stand up, pitching the Giants past the Los Angeles Dodgers.

Blach (2-3) pitched into the seventh inning and allowed two runs. Hunter Strickland pitched the ninth for his seventh save. Buster Posey doubled and scored twice and Brandon Belt added an RBI double as the Giants took three of four in the series.

Kenta Maeda (2-2) took the loss for Los Angeles, which put right fielder Yasiel Puig on the disabled list before the game with a left hip pointer and bruised foot. He was hurt a day earlier when he ran into a padded wall tracking down a foul ball - he also fouled a ball off his foot.

                Quotes of the Day
“I got a text from Charles Woodson who told me ‘your son has to retire’.There’s no way he can put that red helmet on his head’. Part of me felt that way, but in all seriousness it’s a good opportunity for him and I was hoping that he would land at a spot that will kind of grow him to that position. He can play D-tackle, but I think he could be special on the offensive line.”

Monday’s List of 13: Wrapping up a sports weekend

                13) Lost in the Ravens taking QB Lamar Jackson in the draft this week is this:

It gets Baltimore completely off the hook for potentially signing Colin Kaepernick; Ravens have Joe Flacco, Robert Griffin III and Jackson- they don’t need another QB.

                12) In baseball, you can wager on teams to win series as opposed to games. Here are best and worst teams in series so far this season:

Best: Arizona 9-0, Red Sox 7-2, Mariners 6-1-2, Braves 6-1-2
                Worst: Royals 0-6-3, Orioles 2-7, White Sox 1-7-1, Reds 2-6-1, Rangers 2-6-1

                11) When Pablo Sandoval pitched an inning in the Giants’ 15-6 loss Saturday, he was the first position player to pitch for the Giants since 1991, when Greg Litton threw an inning vs Houston.

                10) Marlins 3, Rockies 0— Colorado went to Miami and scored two runs in three games against the sad sack Marlins.

Cubs 2, Brewers 0— Milwaukee went 0-4 in Wrigley this week, scoring total of two runs.

                9) Philadelphia Eagles drafted Jordan Mailata, a 6-foot-8, 346-pound rugby star from Australia; he has no football experience, but is expected to play tackle. From the film I saw of him carrying the ball and running over rugby opponents, maybe he should play fullback.

                8) New England Patriots made seven trades this weekend; they’ve got six picks in the first three rounds of next year’s draft.

                7) Sprint and T-Mobile are going to merge, creating a wireless phone provider with 100M customers, second only to Verizon. The all-stock deal would combine Sprint, which has a market value of $26B, with T-Mobile, which has a market value of $55B, based on Friday’s closing prices. The two companies also have about $60B of combined debt.

                6) Al Pedrique is the A’s first base coach this year; in 2007, he convinced the Astros to sign a second baseman from Venezuela. Kid named Altuve; you may have heard of him.

                5) Baseball players get hurt a lot:
                — Padres’ RF Wil Myers pulled an oblique swinging the bat Saturday and is on the DL
                — Arizona P Robbie Ray hurt his oblique pitching, left his start in 2nd inning.
                — Miguel Cabrera (biceps) left Sunday’s game in the 5th inning.
                — Yoenis Cespedes hurt his hand sliding into third base, left game in 3rd inning.

                4) Michigan’s football team had their spring practice in France; why? Who foots the bill for that?

                3) 123 underclassmen declared for the NFL Draft; 83 were drafted.

                2) I still don’t get why teams bat their pitcher 8th; haven’t seen one compelling argument for doing it, other than “Tony LaRussa did it.”

                1) This year was Mel Kiper’s 35th NFL Draft on ESPN; the man knows his stuff. Not often one person stays in the same place for 35 years in the TV business.

                              New York Streakey

The New York Yankees were expected to run roughshod over the rest of the American League when they inked big bat Giancarlo Stanton to their lineup. While he has struggled at times, others have stepped up their game and they're also getting timely pitching. The Yankees have won nine games in a row, outscoring the opponent by a 64-18 margin during the impressive span. As such they're now No. 2 in the majors in run differential at plus-47, 12 behind the rival Boston Red Sox. They're nine-game winning streak has also reeled the Red Sox back in, closing the division lead to just two games.

                              No Help at Home

The Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim have been a difficult team to figure out this season. The Halos are four games over .500 and just 2 1/2 games behind the defending World Champion Houston Astros. However, they're 5-10 at home and they lead the majors with an 11-2 mark on the road. They were just swept by the aforementioned Yankees, and they have dropped four in a row at home overall. The Halos should be able to get well at home as they kick off a series against the skidding Baltimore Orioles (8-20) starting on Monday night. The O's are 3-10 in 13 tries on the road this season and they're 29th in the majors with a minus-54 run differential, so something's gotta give.

                              Looking Ahead

                              Monday, April 30

The winds will be kicking up at Wrigley Field at a 13-16 mph clip, blowing out from home plate to left field. That's great news for 'over' bettors in the Rockies-Cubs game. The Rockies will be looking to get on track after being shut out in Miami of all places on Sunday. The 'over' is 4-1-1 in Kyle Freeland's past six starts on the road, while going 3-1-1 in his past five away starts against a team with a winning record. The 'under' has dominated for the Cubs, going 5-0 in their past five overall, and 4-0 in their past four at Wrigley Field. However, the over has hit in 10 of the past 11 home outings for Jon Lester, and 11-3 in their past 14 games overall.

Sonny Gray and the Yankees head from California to Texas to battle the Astros at Minute Maid Park in a rematch of the 2017 American League Championship Series. The Yankees roll in on a nine-game winning streak, and they're 4-0 in their past four road outings. They're also 6-0 in the past six against a right-handed starting pitcher, and they're 6-2 in their past eight against AL West foes. However, they're 4-9 in the past 13 on the road against a team with a winning road record, and they're 1-4 in their past five road starts by Sonny Gray. The Astros have ripped off five in a row against AL East clubs, and they're 37-14 in their past 51 vs. RHP. They're also 4-1 in Charlie Morton's past five outings against an AL East team and they're 9-4 in the past 13 against a team with a winning overall mark.

The Astros have good knowledge of Gray from his days with the Oakland A's. The red-hot Jose Altuve is 11-for-30 (.367) with a double, an RBI and a .767 OPS in his career. Brian McCann is also hitting .333 (4-for-12) with a double, a home run and three RBI in his career against the Yankees right-hander. All Astros aren't as good against Gray, however, as Carlos Correa is just 1-for-14 (.071) with three strikeouts in their brief encounters.

Zack Greinke will face his former team, the Dodgers, in a home start on Monday. L.A. limps in with just one win over his past six overall, while going 2-5 in their past seven against a team with a winning overall mark. The Dodgers roll out Ross Stripling, and they're just 2-5 in his past seven starts. The Snakes are 4-1 in their past five vs. RHP and 7-2 in their past nine home outings, while going 6-2 in the past eight overall. Arizona is also 15-2 in Greinke's past 17 home starts against a team with a losing record. Corey Seager has had success in his career against Greinke, going 6-for-14 (.429) with two homers and 1.508 OPS. Yasmani Grandal also has two homers in 30 career ABs vs. Greinke, while Cody Bellinger is 5-for-12 (.417) with a double and two solo homers.

                              Weather Report

The Royals and Red Sox are slated for a 7:05 p.m. ET first pitch, but there is a 40 percent chance of rain. It's possible the tarpaulin could be on the field when the game is slated to start, although the showers will move out of the area within an hour or so. There won't be any precipitation, but the winds will be whipping in the Twin Cities for the Blue Jays-Twins battle. The winds will be blowing from right field to left field at a 13-16 mph clip. Wind has been a story in San Francisco all weekend, and it will continue on Monday night. While they'll die down as the game goes on, the weather forecast calls for winds from 16-19 mph blowing out to the right-center field power alley. By the end of the game the winds should decrease to the 9-12 mph area.

                              Tuesday, May 1

The Nationals will be heavily favored at home against the Pirates, as Max Scherzer will be on the bump. It also doesn't help that the Pirates counter with the erratic Chad Kuhl. The Pirates enter the series 0-4 in their past four road games against a right-handed starter, and they're 1-4 in Kuhl's past five road starts against a team with a losing record. They're also 1-7 in Kuhl's past eight road starts overall. It's the total opposite for Scherzer and the Nats. While they enter the new week four games under .500, they're 9-2 in Scherzer's past 11 at home, including 6-0 in his past six at Nationals Park against teams with a winning overall record. They're also 6-2 in his past eight against NL Central foes while going 39-15 in his past 54 overall.

The Braves and Mets open a set on Tuesday at Citi Field after a scheduled day off for both. Atlanta has posted wins in four of their past five road games, and they're an impressive 11-3 in their past 14 overall against teams with a winning record. That will be put to the test with Sean Newcomb on the hill, however, as the Braves are just 2-9 in his past 11 tries against teams with an overall winning mark, while going 3-8 in his past 11 inside the division and 1-5 in his past six working on four days of rest. New York has cooled after their red-hot start, going 0-6 in their past six following a win. However, Noah Syndergaard has been hot, going 5-1 in his past six outings. They're also 5-2 in his past seven home starts.

Milwaukee and Cincinnati do battle on Tuesday night. The Brewers have been hot with Chase Anderson on the hill, going 5-1 in his past six on the road while going 8-3 in the past 11 games overall with Anderson on the bump. For the Reds, Homer Bailey looks to find some consistency. The Reds have dropped each of Bailey's past four starts at home while going 0-4 in his past four attempts against a winning team. Cincinnati is also 1-7 in Bailey's past eight assignments at home against a team with a winning record. Great American Ball Park hasn't been kind to them period, as they enter the week 3-15 over their pat 18 at GABP.

Many of Bailey's problems have to do with Ryan Braun. The outfielder is 16-for-47 (.340) with four doubles, four homers and nine RBI with a 1.073 OPS against the Reds' starter. Manny Pina doesn't have a lengthy history against the Cincinnati pitcher, but what little he has seen he has liked. Pina is 4-for-7 with two homers and four RBI in his career against the veteran.

Clayton Kershaw has four losses already this season, equaling his loss totals from the 2016 and 2017 seasons. Paul Goldschmidt will look to keep him down. While the left-handed slugger is just 11-for-49 (.224) against Kershaw, Goldie has two doubles, three homers and nine RBI against the three-time Cy Young Award winner.

                              Weather Report

On Tuesday, the winds will be kicking at Progressive Field for the Rangers and Indians. The wins will be blowing out to the right-center field power alley at 12-15 mph. Also in Ohio, the Brewers and Reds will be fighting winds blowing from right to left field at 10-13 mph at first pitch, decreasing as the game progresses. Wind will be an issue at Citi Field, too, as the Braves and Mets play the second game of their series. Winds will blow out to right-center field at 12-15 mph for the entire game.

In Detroit, it will be the complete opposites. Winds are blowing in from right field to home plate at 13-17 mph. For the Rockies-Cubs, winds will be howling from 16-20 mph to the left-center field power alley, and a line of thunderstorms is scheduled to roll in during the later innings, too. And, this is a recording, but winds will be kicking in Frisco again. There will be a stiff breeze from 14-17 mph blowing to straightaway center field, affecting the Padres and Giants.

                              Weather Report

The matinee action in Beantown will be affected by stiff winds blowing out to the right-center field power alley from 16-19 mph. Wind will also be the story in Cleveland for the series finale between the Rangers and Indians. Winds will also be blowing from 15-18 mph out to right-center. In Detroit, the winds will be blowing straight in from right field to home plate at 17-20 mph, so an 'under' result could be in the offing.

Wind will also be the story in St. Louis and Chicago. For White Sox-Cards, winds will be whipping from 15-18 mph to the left-center field power alley, while the ball will be sailing with a stiff wind at 16-19 mph blowing to straightaway center in Wrigley Field.

In Minnesota, there is a slight chance of rain which could potentially affect the start time of the Blue Jays-Twins finale. The forecast calls for a 40 percent chance of rain at first pitch, decreasing to 25 percent by 2pm CT.

                              • LEADING OFF: Bellinger on bench? Yanks go for 10 wins in row
                                April 29, 2018

A look at what's happening all around the majors today:

                                BELLINGER BENCHED?

Dodgers manager Dave Roberts decides whether to start first baseman Cody Bellinger in the series opener at Arizona. The NL Rookie of the Year was yanked in the middle of the game Sunday for what Roberts said was a lack of hustle. Roberts said he felt Bellinger should've tried for a triple on a ball he hit into the alley at San Francisco. Bellinger, who hit a Dodgers rookie record 39 home runs, disputed Roberts' assessment but wasn't upset.

''I'm always hustling,'' Bellinger said. ''It just didn't make sense to me, but I get it as well. He's trying to prove a point. I don't think anyone can tell me how to play. I've always played hard.''

                                ROCKET MEN

The New York Yankees go for their 10th straight win when they visit Houston for the first time since losing Game 7 of the AL Championship Series. Charlie Morton pitches for the Astros - he started that 4-0 win last October at Minute Maid Park, throwing five sharp innings. Sonny Gray starts for the Yankees - he's had trouble making it through five innings this year.

                                ACE ARRIETA

Jake Arrieta has done everything the Phillies hoped since they signed the former NL Cy Young Award winner in the middle of spring training. In his first season in Philadelphia, Arrieta is 3-0 with a 1.82 ERA in four games. He starts in Miami against Dan Straily, set to make his season debut after recovering from a problem in his right forearm.

                                TRY AGAIN

Lance Lynn makes another attempt to post his first AL victory. He signed with Minnesota as a free agent during spring training, and is 0-2 with a 7.71 ERA in four starts for the Twins. Lynn will face the visiting Blue Jays.

                                SPEEDY

Nationals leadoff man Trea Turner is 12 for 12 on steal attempts this year. He has matched Adam Kennedy (2010) for the most consecutive swipes without being caught to start a season since the franchise moved to Washington to begin play in 2005. The Nationals open a series at home vs. Pittsburgh.
