    • Cespedes, Mets top Braves in 12; Astros blank White Sox
      April 21, 2018

PHOENIX (AP) Tyson Ross lost his bid to pitch the first no-hitter in the history of the San Diego Padres when rookie center fielder Franchy Cordero appeared to misplay a ball with two outs in the eighth inning Friday night of a 4-1 win over the Arizona Diamondbacks.

Playing their 7,835th game since joining the majors in 1969, the Padres again came agonizingly close to their first no-no. They remain the only team in the big leagues that has never thrown a no-hitter.

Ross had a 1-0 lead with two outs in the eighth when Christian Walker lined a drive to deep center. Cordero seemed to get a late break on the ball, then had it sail just over his outstretched glove for a double that made it 1-all. Ross was pulled after throwing a career-high 127 pitches. The right-hander, who turns 31 on Sunday, struck out 10 and walked three. He retired 18 straight after walking Jarrod Dyson in the first. Brad Hand (1-2) relieved Ross and got the last four outs - they combined on the 29th one-hitter in Padres' history.

This was the second no-hit bid to end with two outs in the eighth in the same ballpark in four nights. Arizona's Patrick Corbin came close in a one-hit, 1-0 win over San Francisco on Tuesday.

Christian Villaneuva hit an RBI single off Brad Boxberger (0-2) in a three-run ninth.

      METS 5, BRAVES 3, 12 INNINGS

ATLANTA (AP) - Yoenis Cespedes, who struck out in his previous four at-bats, hit a tiebreaking single with two outs in the 12th to lift the New York Mets over the Braves.

Cespedes' single to right field drove in winning pitcher Robert Gsellman from second base. Cespedes scored on Asdrubal Cabrera's double off Josh Ravin (0-1) to right field. Cabrera ran halfway to third before stopping and trying to return to second. A review showed he was out at second, overturning the original call. Ravin hit Gsellman with a pitch to open the 12th. Gsellman moved to second on Amed Rosario's sacrifice. Michael Conforto popped out before Cespedes delivered the go-ahead hit.

Gsellman (2-0) pitched two scoreless innings. Jeurys Familia pitched a perfect 12th for his eighth save.

      ASTROS 10, WHITE SOX 0

CHICAGO (AP) - Justin Verlander pitched six sparkling innings, Carlos Correa homered twice and the Houston Astros pounded the White Sox.

George Springer also drove in four runs with a pair of doubles in Houston's fourth straight victory. Verlander (3-0) allowed two hits and walked three while improving to 2-0 with a microscopic 0.43 ERA in his last three starts. The ace right-hander also struck out five to reach 2,455 for his career, passing Sam McDowell for 38th on baseball's all-time Ks list.

James Shields (1-2) took the loss for the White Sox, who managed just two hits in their 10th loss in 11 games. But the deep slide became a secondary concern after a scary scene in the sixth.

Reliever Danny Farquhar passed out in Chicago's dugout after recording the last two outs in the top of the inning. He was attended to team medical personnel and on-site EMTs. The White Sox said he regained consciousness before he was taken to a hospital by ambulance for further testing.

      TIGERS 3, ROYALS 2, 10 INNINGS, 1ST GAME

      ROYALS 3, TIGERS 2, 2ND GAME

DETROIT (AP) - Detroit rookie first baseman Niko Goodrum dropped Jon Jay's grounder and then made a wild throw, allowing the tiebreaking run to score in the ninth inning as the Kansas City Royals snapped a nine-game losing streak, rallying past the Tigers in the second game of a split doubleheader.

Detroit won the afternoon opener on a solo homer by JaCoby Jones in the 10th.

The Tigers led 2-1 in the ninth of the nightcap before pinch-hitter Abraham Almonte lined a tying single with one out. With runners at first and second, Jay hit a grounder to Goodrum, who didn't handle it cleanly. Goodrum then flipped the ball over the head of pitcher Shane Greene (1-1), who was covering. Kelvin Herrera pitched the ninth for his third save, ending Detroit's four-game winning streak.

Jakob Junis (3-1) allowed two runs and four hits in eight innings for the Royals.

With one out in the 10th of the first game, Jones hit a fastball from Brad Keller (0-1) deep to left and immediately put up his right index finger in celebration. Joe Jimenez (2-0) pitched a scoreless 10th to earn the win.

      ORIOLES 3, INDIANS 1

BALTIMORE (AP) - Dylan Bundy pitched six innings of five-hit ball and struck out nine to secure his elusive first win of the season, and the Orioles beat the Cleveland Indians to end a six-game losing streak.

Manny Machado homered and Trey Mancini doubled in two runs for Baltimore, which was outscored 43-22 during an 0-6 trip through Boston and Detroit.

Bundy (1-2) came in with a 1.40 ERA after allowing only four earned runs in four starts while being victimized by a lack of run support. In this one, Baltimore did just enough damage against Trevor Bauer (1-2) to get Bundy his first victory since Aug. 29.

Richard Bleier worked two innings - aided by a fine defensive play by Machado at shortstop - and Darren O'Day got three outs for his first save.

      CARDINALS 4, REDS 2

ST. LOUIS (AP) - Michael Wacha kept up his strong pitching against Cincinnati, Yadier Molina hit two-run double in the first inning, and the Cardinals spoiled Jim Riggleman's debut as Reds interim manager.

Riggleman replaced Bryan Price, who was fired Thursday after Cincinnati lost 15 of its first 18 games.

Wacha (3-1) gave up one run and six hits in 6 2/3 innings, his longest outing of the year, to improve to 10-1 in his career against the Reds. Bud Norris picked up his fifth save in five chances despite allowing a two-out RBI single to Alex Blandino, helping the Cardinals won for the sixth time in seven games.

Brandon Finnegan (0-2) lost for the second time in two starts against the Cardinals this year.

      BLUE JAYS 8, YANKEES 5

NEW YORK (AP) - Lourdes Gurriel Jr. made an impressive major league debut with two hits and three RBIs as the Toronto Blue Jays beat the Yankees.

Teoscar Hernandez homered and drove in three runs and Yangervis Solarte also connected for the Blue Jays, who have won nine of their last 11.

Yankees slugger Giancarlo Stanton broke a 50 at-bat homerless slump with his fourth shot of the season, a drive that put New York ahead 4-2 in the third. Miguel Andujar and Tyler Austin also homered for New York.

Toronto starter Marco Estrada (2-1) was charged with five runs and seven hits, three of them home runs, in five innings. Roberto Osuna pitched the ninth for his sixth save in as many chances.

The Blue Jays chased Sonny Gray (1-2) by sending nine to the plate in the fourth. Gray allowed five hits and five runs in 3 1/3 innings.

      PHILLIES 2, PIRATES 1

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Odubel Herrera hit a go-ahead triple in the eighth inning to lift the Phillies over the Pittsburgh Pirates.

Herrera, Cesar Hernandez, Carlos Santana and Maikel Franco each had two hits for the Phillies, who have won nine of 11 overall while improving to 7-1 at home. It is Philadelphia's best start at home since it won seven of eight to begin the 1981 season.

Luis Garcia (2-1) pitched a scoreless eighth inning, and Hector Neris blanked Pittsburgh in the ninth to earn his third save in four tries.

After Hernandez led off the eighth with a double and Santana grounded out, Herrera lined an 86-mph cutter from George Kontos (1-2) on a 1-2 count just inside the first-base bag to score Hernandez and give the Phillies a 2-1 lead.

      RAYS 8, TWINS 7, 10 INNINGS

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (AP) - Pinch-runner Johnny Field scored the winning run from second base in the 10th as reliever Zach Duke missed first base after taking a flip from Joe Mauer on Denard Span's two-out grounder, leading the Tampa Bay Rays past the Minnesota Twins.

Wilson Ramos had a one-out double off Duke (1-1). After Mallex Smith struck out and Adeiny Hechavarria was intentionally walked, Mauer made a diving catch on Span's ball and made a toss to Duke, who missed touching the base on two attempts that allowed Field to score. The safe call was upheld after a 2-minute, 16-second video review.

Alex Colome (1-2) worked a perfect 10th for the win.

Tampa Bay forced extra innings when Carlos Gomez was hit by a pitch from Fernando Rodney with two outs in the ninth, stole second and scored on Brad Miller's RBI single to tie it at 7.

      MARINERS 6, RANGERS 2

ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) - Jean Segura hit a two-run double in a four-run ninth inning after Mitch Haniger's tying homer in the eighth, lifting the Seattle Mariners over the Rangers.

The liner to right center from Segura chased Texas closer Keone Kela (2-1), who gave up singles to Daniel Vogelbach and Dee Gordon and got his only out on Guillermo Heredia's sacrifice bunt.

Haniger's fifth homer was a two-out shot to the berm in center field against Chris Martin. Haniger and Kyle Seager added RBI singles in the ninth off Jake Diekman as the Rangers remained the only team in the majors without a win in a series opener, dropping to 0-7.

Juan Nicasio (1-0) pitched a scoreless eighth, and Edwin Diaz struck out two in the ninth around a walk and a hit batter.

      BREWERS 8, MARLINS 0

MILWAUKEE (AP) - Ryan Braun and Travis Shaw hit back-to-back homers, helping the Brewers to a victory over the Miami Marlins.

It was the fourth consecutive win for Milwaukee, which has outscored Miami 20-3 in the first two games of the series.

Jhoulys Chacin (1-1) picked up his first win since signing with the Brewers as a free agent during the offseason. The right-hander pitched six innings, scattering four hits and three walks while striking out five.

Miami starter Trevor Richards (0-2) lasted only 3 2/3 innings, giving up six runs on five hits and six walks while striking out five.

      CUBS 16, ROCKIES 5

DENVER (AP) - Javier Baez and Kyle Schwarber each had a homer and four RBIs, and the Chicago Cubs used a seven-run sixth inning to rout the Rockies.

Baez had four hits, finishing a triple shy of the cycle. Schwarber had three hits, connecting for his fourth home run of the season in the sixth to help break open the game. Albert Amora Jr. added four hits, including a double and RBI single.

Kyle Hendricks (1-1) struck out six and allowed three runs on five hits in five innings to pick up his first win of the season.

Nolan Arenado homered for Colorado in his return from a five-game suspension stemming from his involvement in a brawl against San Diego earlier this month. Jon Gray (1-4) allowed seven runs - five earned - in five-plus innings.

        • Saturday’s 6-pack

NFL Network’s Mike Mayock’s QB ratings for the 2018 Draft:

          6) Mason Rudolph, Oklahoma State

          5) Lamar Jackson, Louisville

          4) Baker Mayfield, Oklahoma

          3) Josh Rosen, UCLA

          2) Josh Allen, Wyoming

          1) Sam Darnold, USC

          Fact of the Day
“The first time I did acupuncture, it was part of my recovery after I tore my Achilles. The guy I went to for my rehab suggested that it would be good and help with some of the swelling and stuff like that. I tried it and it did work really well. It helped the swelling and took some of the pain away, so it became a weekly thing for me for a while.”
          Chauncey Billups

          Saturday’s quiz
Of 30 current major league general managers, how many went to an Ivy League school?

          Friday’s quiz
Dusty Baker was manager of the Cincinnati Reds before Bryan Price.

          Thursday’s quiz
Alaska was the 49th state, Hawai’i the 50th— Arizona was the 48th state.

          *********************************

          Saturday’s List of 13: Clearing out a cluttered mind…….

          13) Dusty Baker went 509-463 in six years managing the Reds; since they fired him, Cincinnati is 279-387; they just fired Bryan Price, Baker’s successor.

Baker went 192-132 in two years managing the Nationals; they’re 9-10 in their first year since they fired Baker as manager.

Baker went 322-326 in four years managing the Cubs; they had losing seasons five of the next seven years before the new owners came in, sunk in lot of money to the team, hired Joe Maddon and now they’re one of baseball’s better teams.

Baker went 840-715 in ten years managing the Giants; they missed playoffs five of the next six years, but Bruce Bochy has won three World Series titles since replacing Felipe Alou, who had replaced Baker.

Not really sure why the Reds fired him- they made the freakin’ playoffs the last two years he was their manager.

          12) Happy 73rd birthday to Steve Spurrier, who has had an interesting career:
          — Won Heisman Trophy as a QB at Florida
          — One of last punters who was also a player (QB, mostly a backup with SF)
          — He was the QB of the original Tampa Bay Buccaneers in ‘76
          — He coached the Tampa Bay Bandits (35-19) in the old USFL
          — He was head coach at Duke (20-13-1) — he made Dave Brown look good!!!!
          — He was a great coach at Florida (87-12 in SEC games)
          — He coached the Redskins (12-20) for two forgettable years
          — He revived South Carolina football (86-49, 44-40 in SEC games) for 11 years.

          11) Baker Mayfield has had a camera crew documenting his life since the Rose Bowl loss to Georgia, as he prepares for the draft. Oy. How does he or his people think this helps him?

          10) Penn State hasn’t had a first round pick in NFL Draft since Jared Odrick in 2010; he was a defensive end taken by Miami with the 28th pick.

          9) Green Bay has 12 draft picks next week, the most of any team. Browns, Bills, Patriots all have three first round picks.

          8) Troy Aikman says you can’t teach accuracy throwing a football, you have it or you don’t, which if true, is very bad news for whomever drafts Josh Allen.

          7) Useless knowledge: Lot of NBA players use acupuncture to try and relieve pain and maximize their performance.

          6) Cleveland Cavaliers have won 23 games this season when they were outrebounded, most in NBA; Rockets (22), Pacers (21) are next on that list.

          5) 15 months ago, Trevor Richards was working in the gift shop at Miller Brewery in Milwaukee, making $9 an hour; Friday, Richards was the starting pitcher for the Miami Marlins in Miller Park, against the Brewers. He makes more than $9 an hour now.

          4) There have already been 27 games this baseball season where the game time temperature was in the 30’s; in the previous four years combined, there were 25. In four years.

          3) Miami Marlins’ rookie Jarlin Garcia’s 10 straight hitless innings in his first two major league starts ties the record for most consecutive hitless innings as a new starter – a record set by Bobo Holloman in 1953.

Hollomon was a 30-year old rookie with the St Louis Browns who went 3-7, 5.23 in 22 games (10 starts) in his only major league season.

          2) In the first week of the season, Giants won consecutive 1-0 games over the Dodgers, with Joe Panik hitting a home run both days.

This week, Milwaukee beat the Reds 2-0 two days in a row, with Marcus Thames hitting a 2-run homer two days in a row.

Elias Sports reports that those are the only two times in the last 118 years where two teams played back-to-back games where the only runs scored in either of them came from a home run by the same guy in each game.

          1) Touching moment on Twitter: Barbara Bush’s Secret Service detail, many of whom have been been with her for decades, refused to leave her side until she was buried. They stood by the closed casket during her memorial service. Wow.

          • LEADING OFF: Darvish, Keuchel, Colon all go for 1st win
            April 20, 2018

A look at what's happening around the majors Saturday:

            STILL WAITING

The Chicago Cubs are hoping Yu Darvish can begin to show his All-Star form sometime soon. Signed to a $126 million, six-year deal as a free agent, he is 0-1 with a 6.00 ERA in three starts. Darvish got rankled after a balk call in his last outing against Atlanta. He'll try to get on track when he pitches for the first time at Coors Field vs. Charlie Blackmon and the Rockies.

            ANY TAKERS

Pitcher A.J. Cole is available after being designated for assignment by Washington. Once a prized pitcher, he began the season in the Nationals' rotation. But the 26-year-old righty had trouble, was sent to the bullpen and now is headed to the waiver wire. Cole was 1-1 with a 13.06 ERA, giving up six home runs in only 10 1/3 innings during two starts and two relief appearances. The 6-foot-5 Cole pitched in parts of four seasons for Washington. He gave up a grand slam to Yoenis Cespedes of the Mets in his last outing.

            BART'S BACK

Bartolo Colon starts for the first time since taking a perfect game into the eighth inning last Sunday night at Houston. Colon, who turns 45 in just over a month, is 0-0 in two starts and two relief appearances for Texas with a 1.45 ERA. The popular righty has earned wins with 10 different teams during his career, including the Montreal Expos. He'll go for his first with the Rangers when he takes on the visiting Mariners.

            RUN DOWN

Astros lefty Dallas Keuchel tries again for his first win when he faces the White Sox in Chicago. The former AL Cy Young winner is 0-3 with a 3.52 ERA for the World Series champs. Houston hitters haven't helped him much - they've totaled just six runs in Keuchel's four starts this season.

                      Big Pitching

The defending World Champion Houston Astros sit atop the majors with a 2.45 ERA through 20 games, going 13-7 with 223 strikeouts over just 179 2/3 innings, and they're holding the opposition to a .211 batting average. So far the Astros and the Washington Nationals are the only teams to collectively reach 200 strikeouts as a staff. The average, by the way, is a 4.02 ERA, and the median for opponent batting average is .240. On the flip side of things, batters are teeing off on Chicago White Sox pitching, hitting them hard for a .264 average, while the Texas Rangers have allowed a .270 batting average, and the Oakland Athletics have a .272 opponent batting average. The worst during the early going has been in Baltimore, as hitters are humping up on O's pitching to the tune of a .283 average. They have already yielded 97 earned runs in just 19 games for a 5.11 ERA. The White Sox are worst in the majors with a 5.64 staff ERA.

SP Justin Verlander visits Chicago in a new uniform on Friday, but 1B Jose Abreu won't care. He has mashed against the righty regardless of what he is wearing. Abreu is 14-for-35 (.400) with two doubles, five homers and six RBI with a 1.361 OPS against Verlander all-time, as he is obviously not fooled. The same cannot be said for Tim Anderson. He has nothing when it comes to J.V., going 1-for-14 (.071) with no RBI, no walks and six strikeouts. Yolmer Sanchez is still trying to learn Verlander, as he is 1-for-11 (.091) with no RBI, two walks and five whiffs. More often than not Verlander has had his way with the Pale Hose, knowing them well from his days in Detroit. He is 3-0 with a 3.10 ERA in eight starts vs. Chicago since the start of 2015, posting 66 strikeouts in just 49 1/3 innings. Verlander hasn't lost to the White Sox since June 11, 2014 at Guaranteed Rate Field, and six of his past seven decisions against Chicago have been wins.

                      Capital Punishment

The Washington Nationals roll out Max Scherzer (3-1, 1.33 ERA), Stephen Strasburg (2-1, 3.08 ERA, 0.99 WHIP) and Jeremy Hellickson (0-0, 3.86 ERA) for their three-game set against the Los Angeles Dodgers at Chavez Ravine. Strasburg works on Saturday night and faces the erratic Hyun-Jin Ryu in perhaps the most winnable game of the series for the Nats. Strasburg carries a 1-2 record with a 3.50 ERA in three starts against L.A. since the start of 2015, but he has held them to a .174 opponent batting average with 26 strikeouts in just 18 innings. He avoids Clayton Kershaw and gets Ryu, who has been decent this season, but is rather erratic over the years. In fact, the Dodgers are just 2-6 in Ryu's past eight starts. The Nationals have posted a 55-16 in Strasburg's past 71 outings, including 37-18 over his past 55 on the road.

                      Looking Ahead

                      Saturday, April 21

Since the start of the 2015 season, Blue Jays SP Marcus Stroman has posted a 4-3 record with a 3.40 ERA in 10 starts against the Yankees. The four wins are tied for his most against any other club. Of course, he has faced them more, too. However, he has a sparkling .230 opponent batting average with 36 strikeouts over 55 2/3 innings with just six homers allowed. Aaron Judge has skewed those numbers in a bad way for Stroman, though. In their brief encounters he is 6-for-14 (.429) with three homers and four RBI while posting a 1.571 OPS against the Blue Jays hurler. Brett Gardner has also taken Stroman deep twice while posting five RBI over 37 at-bats.

The Mets have been red hot on the road, but Braves SP Julio Teheran could cool them off at SunTrust Park on Saturday night. Since the start of the 2015 season the righty is 5-3 with a 2.20 ERA across 12 starts, including one complete game. He has struck out 58 batters over 77 2/3 innings while yielding just three homers and holding New York batters to a .158 opponent batting average. Yoenis Cespedes is just 4-for-18 (.222) with no extra-base hits or RBI and six strikeouts. Jay Bruce and Jose Lobaton have each connected for two homers against him and represent the greatest power threats.

Reds SP Homer Bailey has not enjoyed facing the Cardinals over the years. He is 0-4 with a 9.90 ERA in four starts against the Redbirds since the start of the 2015 season, and they're hitting over .400 against him with 11 walks and just 10 strikeouts over 20 innings. He hasn't beat St. Louis since a home game back on May 23, 2014. Yadier Molina likes facing Bailey, as he carries a .405 career average (17-for-42) with three doubles, three homers and seven RBI into the contest. Matt Carpenter has also hit Bailey hard to the tune of a .500 average (18-for-36) with three doubles, four RBI and a 1.110 OPS.

                      Weather Report

For the early games, the weather looks to be a little crisp and cool, but without any threat of precipitation after a rough start to the season in the east. However, there is a very real threat of thunderstorms in the Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex on Saturday night, and it could end up sacking the game between the Mariners and Rangers. The forecast calls for a 65-70 percent of thunderstorms starting right around first pitch, tapering off sometime around 11pm CT. If that game does get underway, there could be starting and stopping, a long delay, etc. That's never good for the starting pitchers, and could mean more reliance on the bullpens. Texas entered play on Friday with a 4.76 ERA for their bullpen, ranked 28th in the majors. Seattle has been so-so with a 4.08 ERA.

Wind won't really be a factor in many parks, as forecasts are calling for 10 mph or less almost entirely across the board. However, the wind will be blowing out at O.co Coliseum in Oakland for the game between the Boston Red Sox and Oakland Athletics. It won't be a stiff jetstream, but Oakland's winds are forecast to be highest at around 10-13 mph and blowing straight out to the power alley in right-center field.

There are a lot of ugly career numbers from the Orioles when it comes to facing Indians SP Corey Kluber. The current roster is a collective 15-for-99 (.152) with two doubles, a home run, six RBI and 34 strikeouts vs. five walks. If you were wondering, it was IF Jonathan Schoop iwth the only homer, as he is actually 4-for-12 (.333) with a double and the solo homer against Klubot. 1B Chris Davis is a dismal 1-for-14 (.071) with one RBI and seven strikeouts against the righty, while OF Adam Jones is just 3-for-17 (.176) with no extra-base hits, no walks and no RBI while striking out seven times. However, Kluber is just 1-0 with a 2.35 ERA in three starts since April 2015 against the O's. He probably wishes he faced them more often. He hasn't lost to Baltimore since June 27, 2013 at Camden Yards.

Yankees SP Luis Severino opened his 2018 season with a win in Toronto back on March 29. He allowed just one hit with no runs, three walks and seven strikeouts over 5 2/3 innings in that one. It was a surprising result, as he entered the season with 0-3 with a 5.52 ERA in seven career appearances (six starts) against the Blue Jays. 1B Justin Smoak has the most experience against him, and the most success. He is 5-for-14 (.357) with two homers and five RBI with a 1.256 OPS against the Yankees righty.

Twins SP Jake Odorizzi will toe the slab in a familiar place on Sunday afternoon, as he makes his first appearance against his former team, the Tampa Bay Rays, at Tropicana Field. None of the current Rays have more than eight at-bats against the right-hander, but they obviously know him from his time in St. Petersburg. And he knows the park, too, so he'll have that to his advantage. From 2015-17, Odorizzi was 15-12 with a 3.57 ERA in 45 starts at Tropicana Field, holding the opposition to a minuscule .227 average with 241 strikeouts over 259 2/3 innings.

                      Weather Report

The rains pop back up for Atlanta, as the series finale between the Mets and Braves could be rained out. The forecast shows a 35 percent chance of rain at first pitch and only getting stronger as the day progresses. A solid, area-covering shield of rain will engulf the Southeast for a good portion of Sunday, Monday and Tuesday, perhaps. The drought-stricken areas need this rain, but of course it's no good for baseball. By 3pm ET, the forecast calls for 65 percent and by 4pm ET, it is 80 percent. If they can get this game in, it might be official after five innings, but probably isn't going the distance.

The wind will be blowing strongly from left field to right field at Guaranteed Rate Field in Chicago for the battle between the Astros and the White Sox, but thankfully rain isn't in the forecast. Down in St. Louis, wind will also be a factor. The winds will be blowing in directly from center field to home plate at 11-14 mph with overcast conditions. The strong winds should keep the offense down, however.

The weather will play a factor in the Seattle-Texas series again, too, but this time it will be wind. There is a zero percent chance of rain for Sunday in Arlington, but winds will be howling from 14-17 mph and blowing directly out to right-center field. The 'over' could be a strong play in that one.

                        • A's Manaea pitches 1st no-hitter against Red Sox since 1993
                          April 22, 2018

OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) A's lefty Sean Manaea pitched the first no-hitter against Boston in 25 years, with an overturned call preserving the gem Saturday night in Oakland's 3-0 win over the sizzling Red Sox.

Manaea struck out 10, walked two and threw 108 pitches to finish off Oakland's first no-no since Dallas Braden tossed a perfect game against Tampa Bay in 2010.

Manaea got Hanley Ramirez to ground out to complete the first no-hitter versus the Red Sox since Seattle's Chris Bosio did it in 1993.

Boston looked as if it had a hit with two outs in the sixth at the Oakland Coliseum. Andrew Benintendi hit a grounder to the right side, slid around first baseman Matt Olson and was ruled safe.

After the umpires conferred, Benintendi was ruled out for going wide of the baseline.

Sandy Leon reached in the Red Sox fifth when A's shortstop Marcus Semien dropped a popup. The play was scored as an error.

Manaea (3-2) had been battered by Boston in three previous starts. But the 26-year-old cooled off a hard-hitting Red Sox team that had won eight in a row and 17 of 18.

                          BRAVES 4, METS 3

ATLANTA (AP) - Johan Camargo tripled home the tying run, then scored on Ender Inciarte's bunt single as the Atlanta Braves scored twice in the ninth inning off Mets closer Jeurys Familia to beat New York 4-3 on Saturday night.

A crowd of 41,396 that was the largest of the season at SunTrust Stadium saw starters Jacob deGrom and Julio Teheran each pitch seven scoreless innings. After they left, the bullpens wilted.

Familia issued a leadoff walk to Dansby Swanson and Camargo followed with a triple that made it 3-all. With one out and runners at the corners, Inciarte put down a bunt to the right side. First baseman Adrian Gonzalez made a quick throw home, but Camargo was already across the plate with a headfirst dive.

Familia (1-1) entered the game unscored upon and tied for the major league lead with eight saves.

Jesse Biddle (1-0) went one inning for the win.

                          ASTROS 10, WHITE SOX 1

CHICAGO (AP) - Josh Reddick hit a grand slam and a solo homer, and Houston pounded reeling Chicago.

Already struggling on the field - and especially on the mound - the White Sox were dealt another blow Saturday when they learned that reliever Danny Farquhar suffered a brain hemorrhage while collapsing in the dugout Friday night.

Dallas Keuchel, the 2015 AL Cy Young Award winner, cruised to his first victory after being staked to a big lead early. Keuchel (1-3) allowed one run and four hits in six innings while striking out six.

Marwin Gonzalez drove in two runs with a double, and Jose Altuve, Carlos Correa and Yuli Gurriel each had an RBI as Houston routed Chicago for a second straight night. Six of the seven Astros batters walked by White Sox starter Lucas Giolito (0-3) scored. Houston has won five straight.

                          BREWERS 6, MARLINS 5

MILWAUKEE (AP) - Jesus Aguilar homered on the 13th pitch leading off the bottom of the ninth inning, and Milwaukee rallied for its fifth consecutive win.

Aguilar, who entered the game as a late-inning replacement, hit his first home run of the season off Junichi Tazawa (0-1).

Milwaukee tied the score in the eighth when Miami left fielder Derek Dietrich misplayed Eric Sogard's two-out popup to left, allowing Travis Shaw to score from second.

Jeremy Jeffress (2-0) pitched a scoreless inning of relief to get the win.

The Marlins have lost six of seven.

                          INDIANS 4, ORIOLES 0

BALTIMORE (AP) - Mike Clevinger pitched a two-hitter in his first career complete game, and Cleveland hit three solo homers off Chris Tillman in a 4-0 victory.

Jose Ramirez went 3 for 4 with his team-leading fifth home run. Yan Gomes and Yonder Alonso also went deep for Cleveland, which came into the game ranked second-to-last in the AL in runs and last in batting average.

Clevinger (2-0) hardly needed the offensive support. Pitching on seven days' rest, the right-hander struck out three, walked two and allowed only one runner past first base.

It was Clevinger's 35th career start. His previous longest outing was 7 1/3 innings, earlier this month against Kansas City.

Tillman (0-4) gave up four runs, eight hits and a walk in six innings.

                          YANKEES 9, BLUE JAYS 1

NEW YORK (AP) - Aaron Judge hit an early homer off respected Twitter rival Marcus Stroman, then scored on a disputed play during a seven-run burst in the sixth inning that sent New York over Toronto.

Judge put the Yankees up 2-0 with his sixth homer, a two-run drive in the third. It came after Stroman and Judge exchanged tweets at the end of last season during which the Toronto ace said their ''future battles will be legendary.''

Judge is now 7 for 16 with four home runs against Stroman (0-2).

Jordan Montgomery (2-0) pitched six innings and allowed one run on four hits.

                          DIAMONDBACKS 6, PADRES 2

PHOENIX (AP) - Zack Godley settled down after a shaky start to throw 5 1/3 solid innings and singled home a run as Arizona beat San Diego.

A.J. Pollock had a solo homer and RBI single for Arizona. Deven Marrero tripled in a run, doubled and scored twice, and Paul Goldschmidt had a double and an RBI triple.

The NL West-leading Diamondbacks, losers to the Padres 4-1 on Friday night, will send left-hander Patrick Corbin to the mound Sunday to try to extend their franchise record with a seventh consecutive series win to start the season.

Pitching on his 28th birthday, Godley (3-1) gave up two runs in the first inning and blanked the Padres over the next 4 1/3. Andrew Chafin, Fernando Salas and T.J. McFarland held San Diego scoreless the rest of the way.

Clayton Richard (0-1) allowed three runs on five hits in five-plus innings.

                          CARDINALS 4, REDS 3

ST. LOUIS (AP) - Yadier Molina hit a tiebreaking home run in the seventh inning and rookie reliever Jordan Hicks got Scooter Gennett to ground into a game-ending double play with the bases loaded, lifting St. Louis over Cincinnati.

The Cardinals have won seven of eight, including six against the Reds. The Reds dropped their fourth straight, and second under interim manager Jim Riggleman, and fell to 3-17 this season.

St. Louis has won 10 in a row from the Reds dating to last season, matching its longest streak against them since 1949, when the Cardinals won 11 straight.

Hicks (1-0) recorded the final seven outs. Jared Hughes (0-2) gave up Molina's sixth homer, a solo drive.

                          PHILLIES 6, PIRATES 2

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Rhys Hoskins hit a go-ahead three-run homer, Aaron Nola tossed seven impressive innings and Philadelphia beat Pittsburgh.

Nola (2-1) allowed two runs, six hits and struck out nine to help the Phillies win their third straight game and improve to 8-1 at home.

The Pirates have lost five of six after an 11-4 start.

Pittsburgh's Steven Brault gave up two runs and two hits in 5 1/3 innings. The lefty took a shutout into the sixth before things unraveled.

Brault hit Carlos Santana with a pitch and Odubel Herrera followed with a single. Michael Feliz (0-1) entered to face Hoskins, who drove a 1-2 pitch into the left-field seats for a 3-2 lead.

Hector Neris got the last four outs for his fourth save.

                          ROCKIES 5, CUBS 2

DENVER (AP) - Nolan Arenado had two hits to back six strong innings from Tyler Anderson and Colorado used a big fifth inning to beat Chicago.

Anderson (1-0) got his first win in five starts and tamed a Chicago lineup that had 16 runs on 18 hits in the series opener on Friday night. The Cubs managed just six hits on the night, two from Albert Almora Jr., who had four in Friday's win.

Wade Davis pitched the ninth for his ninth save in 10 chances.

Chicago's offense wasn't as potent behind starter Yu Darvish (0-2). He started strong but left with two outs in the fifth after allowing five runs on five hits and walking four.

                          RAYS 10, TWINS 1

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (AP) - C.J. Cron hit a pair of two-run homers and Blake Snell won his third straight start for Tampa Bay.

Cron's homer in the third inning put the Rays up 2-1 after Adeiny Hechavarria singled for their first hit off Kyle Gibson (1-1). Cron connected again in the seventh off Gabriel Moya, capping a five-run inning. It was his fourth homer of the season.

Joey Wendle had three hits and scored twice for the Rays, who won their third straight for the first time this year.

Snell (3-1) surrendered just one run for his third consecutive start, striking out six and allowing five hits in seven innings.

                          TIGERS 12, ROYALS 4

DETROIT (AP) - Nicholas Castellanos homered and drove in three runs, and Detroit routed Kansas City.

The Tigers have won five of six. Detroit broke a 3-all tie with three runs in the fifth on a day when both starting pitchers were in almost constant trouble.

Mike Fiers (2-1) allowed two earned runs and 10 hits in 5 1/3 innings for the Tigers, and Royals starter Danny Duffy (0-3) yielded six runs and 10 hits in 4 2/3 innings.

Warwick Saupold pitched 2 1/3 perfect innings for his first career save.

Abraham Almonte had three hits for Kansas City, which has lost 10 of 11.

So here was the trick for us as a group: Could we populate the Thursday night FOX schedule with at least a handful of games that would otherwise be FOX doubleheader games? And still leave FOX with enough quality doubleheader games? And still be able to take a handful of FOX games and put them on CBS?”

Sunday’s List of 13: Wrapping up a sports Saturday

                              13) Oakland 3, Boston 0— Sean Manaea’s first career complete game is also a no-hitter, and against a powerful lineup that was 17-2 coming into the game.

Manaea walked only two hitters; it was the first time the Red Sox were shut out in 25 years, when current Tigers’ pitching coach Chris Bosio did it for the Mariners on April 22, 1993, so almost 25 years to the day.

                              12) San Diego Padres’ manager Andy Green had himself a dilemma in Phoenix Friday night.

Padres led 1-0 after seven innings; Green’s Tyson Ross had a no-hitter going but had already thrown 104 pitches— this was his 4th start back from injury. Ross threw 81-107-100 pitches in his first three starts this season.

Ross’ health is very important, winning the game is important; the no-hitter is less important but is the one thing everyone would talk about.

                              11) Ross walked a guy, then with two out CF Franchy Cordero got Green off the hook when he misjudged a fly ball that fell for a double that tied the score and ended the no-hitter, after Ross had thrown 127 pitches.

San Diego went on to win 4-1; hopefully Ross will bounce back and the longest outing of his career won’t cause his arm any problems.

                              10) Utah Jazz rookie Donovan Mitchell was the 13th player taken in last summer’s draft; Denver took him, then traded him to Utah for Tyler Lydon, Trey Lyles.

Mitchell scored 55 points in Utah’s first two playoff games, breaking Michael Jordan’s record for most points scored by a guard in his first two playoff games. Anytime you break one of Jordan’s records, you’re doing pretty well.

                              9) Cal Bears hired former UCLA assistant basketball coach David Grace to the same position; there seemed to be hard feelings when Steve Alford fired the former Air Force veteran last month. Grace was a solid recruiter for the Bruins. UCLA-Cal games might be a little more spirited than normal next winter.

                              8) Seven Pittsburgh Pirates were involved on a double play in Friday’s game; the play was scored 1-3-4-2-5-8-7, which means everyone touched the ball except the shortstop and rightfielder, and that doesn’t happen much at all.

                              7) From Christopher Kamka: Javier Báez is the first Cubs’ player with 20+ RBI in team’s first 17 games of a season since Billy Williams (25) in 1970.

                              6) Sports are interesting because sometimes you benefit from stuff that has nothing to do with you. Take the NBA’s New Orleans Pelicans.

Nikola Mirotic scored 30 points for New Orleans in their Game 3 win over Portland; the Pelicans are one of the NBA’s hottest teams, and Mirotic is a big reason why.

Back on October 17, Mirotic was in training camp with the Chicago Bulls; he was trash-talking with teammate Bobby Portis during a practice and finally a scuffle broke out. Portis punched Mirotic in the face; Mirotic was left with a fractured face and a concussion.

                              5) Nine days later, Mirotic says either he or Portis has to leave the Bulls, but Mirotic couldn’t be traded until mid-January because he just signed a two-year deal with the Bulls last summer. Other Bulls who were quoted anonymously said they preferred Portis over Mirotic as a teammate, which had to make things pretty awkward for 9 or 10 weeks.

Finally on February 1, Mirotic was sent to New Orleans for three players and a #1 draft pick. Good move by the Pelicans; they’re still playing. Chicago finished the season 27-55.

                              4) Was watching the Reds-Cardinals game on the baseball package on DirecTV Saturday; the Reds’ announcers sound like their best friend just died. Very somber. I know the team sucks, but tell some stories, entertain the viewers— talk about how to get out of slumps. Something!!!

                              3) 76ers 106, Heat 102— Philly leads series 3-1; Miami led all four games at halftime.

                              2) Aaron Rodgers bought a minority stake in the Milwaukee Bucks this week; not bad for a guy who had zero football scholarship offers coming out of high school.

                              1) They had 86,818 fans at Nebraska’s spring football game Saturday.

Number 31 on the red team scored a touchdown in that game; he is a wide receiver from Arizona and that was his first-ever college catch. Kid’s name is Kade Warner; you might’ve heard of his father, Hall of Fame QB Kurt Warner.

                              • LEADING OFF: Farquhar status, Yanks add top prospect Torres
                                April 21, 2018

A look at what's happening around the majors Sunday:

                                FARQUHAR STATUS

The Chicago White Sox will continue to monitor pitcher Danny Farquhar, who was hospitalized in stable but critical condition after suffering a brain hemorrhage. The reliever fell ill Friday night in the dugout after pitching against Houston. The White Sox announced Saturday that additional testing revealed the brain hemorrhage caused by a ruptured aneurysm.

                                HE'S HERE

Top prospect Gleyber Torres is set to join the New York Yankees for his big league debut. The 21-year-old infielder will report to Yankee Stadium for the game against Toronto. Torres hit .347 with three doubles, one triple, one home run and 11 RBIs for Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre. He has played second base, shortstop and third base in the minors.

                                BULLISH

Shohei Ohtani is scheduled to throw a bullpen session that will give the Angels a better idea if the blister that forced the Japanese two-way sensation out of his last pitching start has healed. Los Angeles manager Mike Scioscia said he'll wait until after the game to confirm when Ohtani's next pitching start will be. It could be Monday at Houston.

A blister on Ohtani's right middle finger ended Tuesday night's start against Boston after just two innings. He allowed four hits and three runs on 66 pitches, and couldn't throw his breaking pitches for strikes.

                                PHILLING GOOD

The Phillies try for a sweep when Nick Pivetta faces Pittsburgh at Citizens Bank Park. Philadelphia, which lost 96 times last season, has won three in a row and is 13-7 under new manager Gabe Kapler.

                                LEFT LANE

Padres rookie Joey Lucchesi (2-0, 1.66 ERA) faces Arizona's Patrick Corbin (3-0, 1.65) in Phoenix for a matchup of unbeaten left-handers. Corbin took a no-hitter into the eighth inning of his last start. The 24-year-old Lucchesi will be making his fifth start since his major league debut this season.
