  • LEADING OFF: Cole chases Johnson, Ryan for Astros' K mark
    April 17, 2018

A look at what's happening all around the majors Wednesday:

    GOOD COMPANY

Gerrit Cole can become the first Astros pitcher since Randy Johnson in 1998 to reach double-digit strikeouts in four straight games when Houston faces Seattle. Cole would tie Nolan Ryan for the second-longest double-digit strikeout streak in franchise history - Johnson and J.R. Richard share the team record with five such games in a row. Cole (3-0, 1.29 ERA) has 36 strikeouts in 21 innings and leads all qualified starters with 15.43 strikeouts per nine innings.

    IN SAN JUAN

Puerto Rican pitcher Jose Berrios will start for Minnesota in the finale of a two-game series against Cleveland in San Juan. The crowd there already got a memorable moment from one of its homegrown stars in the opener, when Indians star Francisco Lindor went deep in the fifth inning. Lindor waved on the crowd as he rounded third base, encouraging an ovation powered by pink thundersticks and capped with chants of ''Lindor! Lindor!''

    BACK IN FORM

Rick Porcello (3-0, 1.83) is looking more like the Red Sox ace who won the AL Cy Young Award in 2016, a trend he'll try to keep up against the Angels. Porcello's ERA went from 3.15 in 2016 to 4.65 last year, but he's dominated early on this season, including when he carried a no-hitter into the seventh inning against the Yankees last Thursday. Los Angeles will likely be without Shohei Ohtani a day after the two-way star started on the mound.

    MOVING ON UP

The Tigers moved the start time for their home game against Baltimore to 1:10 p.m. in anticipation of bad weather later in the day. The game was originally scheduled for 6:40 p.m., but Detroit made the switch after consulting with the Orioles and Major League Baseball. Detroit had two games in a home series against the Yankees postponed last weekend, meaning New York will have to fly back to Detroit for a doubleheader in June. This is the only scheduled visit to Detroit for Baltimore.

    MARLINS MAN

J.T. Realmuto is making a fast impact on Miami since returning from the DL. The athletic catcher made his season debut Tuesday after opening the year on the DL and hit a three-run homer against the Yankees. Realmuto was among the few proven players left on the Marlins roster after offseason trades of NL MVP Giancarlo Stanton, Marcell Ozuna, Christian Yelich and Dee Gordon. Miami was 4-12 with Realmuto on the shelf.

            • Big fish Stanton struggling to catch on
              April 18, 2018

NEW YORK (AP) Coming up empty against his former team was hardly what Giancarlo Stanton had in mind.

Same is true of the poor first impression he's made in Yankees pinstripes so far.

Last year's NL MVP is off to a miserable start with New York - especially at home - and the hulking slugger is hearing it from impatient fans in the Bronx. After going 0 for 4 with two more strikeouts in a 9-1 loss to the last-place Miami Marlins on Tuesday night, the slumping Stanton is 3 for 35 (.086) with 20 strikeouts at Yankee Stadium this season.

''Obviously, he's frustrated. You want to go out there and perform, especially when you're an MVP, and obviously he expects a lot of himself,'' rookie manager Aaron Boone said. ''But I think his focus is tremendous and I'm really confident that the work he's putting in - and he's a worker, he gets after it - and I'm confident that once he gets rolling it'll be a juggernaut. I want him to, just for peace of mind, to get going a little bit and kind of settle in and get into the rhythm of the season, but long-term he's too good for it not to start happening.''

Until then, however, Boone acknowledged he's considering a slight drop in the lineup for Stanton, who has been batting third behind Aaron Judge.

The two were supposed to give the Yankees a power-hitting pair to rival Mantle & Maris, or Ruth & Gehrig. But while Judge is hitting .339 with a .480 on-base percentage and four home runs, Stanton has mostly struggled. He's batting .197 with three homers and 10 RBIs, not nearly enough production to offset his 29 strikeouts in 66 at-bats.

''I might flirt with splitting different guys up and stuff, but not moving him down too far because he's one at-bat away from getting it locked back in and then the last thing you want is him down in the order getting pitched around,'' Boone said. ''He's too premier of a player and an at-bat away from, in my eyes, locking it in. So I might juggle with the top five or six, but as far as moving down significantly, no.''

Stanton led the majors with 59 home runs and 132 RBIs for Miami last season. With a $325 million contract, he was traded to New York in December as part of a payroll purge overseen by new Marlins CEO and ex-Yankees captain Derek Jeter.

In his Yankees debut, Stanton homered twice and drove in four runs on opening day in Toronto. But it's been a different story at home, where twice he has struck out five times in a game this month.

New York's big fish has yet to catch on in the Big Apple.

''We're 16 games in and in baseball that's a very small sample,'' Boone said. ''He'll get it rolling here and eventually the league will pay for some of his early struggles.''

Stanton was the only Yankees starter who didn't have a hit in Monday night's 12-1 rout of the visiting Marlins. In his first regular-season game against the team he played for from 2010-17, he fouled out with the bases loaded and whiffed twice. He did reach safely on a walk and a hit by pitch.

Stanton had chances to come through early in Tuesday's game, but he grounded into a double play with two on and none out in the first inning, then fouled off a 3-0 pitch and popped out on 3-1 with two on and one out in the third.

''Shoot, track record don't matter in the moment,'' Stanton said. ''You understand what you've done but if you're in there with a lack of confidence, you might as well go sit down anyways, and that's from the start of any career. Bad times, good times, whatever.''

He finished 0 for 7 with four strikeouts in the two-game series, prompting the latest round of boos directed at Stanton as the Yankees fell to 8-8.

Stanton said it's ''pretty simple'' to block out those boos, and he understands why he's hearing them.

''You've got to own up to it and understand and find a way to get better, find a way to get out of it,'' he said.

                  • Mets use 9-run 8th to cruise past Nats
                    April 18, 2018

SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico (AP) Eddie Rosario scored the winning run in his homeland in the 16th inning, coming around on Ryan LaMarre's single to lift the Minnesota Twins over the Cleveland Indians 2-1 on Wednesday night for a split of their two-game series in Puerto Rico.

Rosario led off the 16th with a single and went to third when Logan Morrison's grounder - which could have been a double-play ball - got past second baseman Jason Kipnis.

Eduardo Escobar was intentionally walked to load the bases with none out, and LaMarre finally ended the 5-hour, 13-minute marathon with a sharp liner to center.

Alan Busenitz (1-0) worked two innings for the win. Josh Tomlin (0-2) got the loss in his first relief appearance since 2016.

                    METS 11, NATIONALS 5

NEW YORK (AP) - Yoenis Cespedes launched a grand slam during New York's nine-run outburst in the eighth inning, helping the Mets avoid a three-game sweep.

Todd Frazier tied it at 4 with a two-run single and pinch-hitter Juan Lagares put New York ahead for the first time with a two-run double off Ryan Madson (0-2).

Ryan Zimmerman homered twice and drove in four runs for the Nationals, who pulled off their own big comeback in the eighth inning of the series opener.

AJ Ramos (1-1) worked a perfect inning for his first win with the Mets since being acquired from Miami last July.

                    ATHLETICS 12, WHITE SOX 11, 14 INNINGS

OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) - Matt Olson singled in Marcus Semien with two outs in the 14th inning, lifting Oakland to the wild victory.

The A's trailed 6-1, 9-4 and 10-8, then gave up a tying run in the ninth before scoring the winning run off James Shields (1-1) five innings later.

The teams combined for 33 hits and 18 walks -12 by Chicago pitchers - in a game that lasted 5 hours and 48 minutes.

Semien singled with two outs in the 14th and stole second. After Shields walked Jed Lowrie and Khris Davis, Olson lined an 0-1 pitch deep to left, and Nicky Delmonico watched it go over his head.

Lou Trivino (1-0) pitched three innings for his first major league win.

                    TIGERS 6, ORIOLES 5

DETROIT (AP) - Dixon Machado led off the bottom of the ninth with a home run, capping a wild final two innings and lifting Detroit to the win.

Detroit led 2-1 before each team scored three runs in the eighth and one in the ninth. Baltimore's Luis Sardinas tied it with a solo shot off Shane Greene (1-0) in the top of the ninth, but then Machado hit a line drive off Pedro Araujo (1-2) that cleared the fence in left field for only the second homer of the infielder's big league career.

Miguel Cabrera went deep on his 35th birthday, and Jeimer Candelario and John Hicks also homered for Detroit.

                    ASTROS 7, MARINERS 1

SEATTLE (AP) - Gerrit Cole pitched seven strong innings and Houston broke it open with six runs in the seventh.

Cole (2-0) struck out five, ending a string of double-digit strikeout games at three. He was charged with an unearned run and five hits.

The Astros sent 11 batters to the plate in their biggest-scoring inning of the season off Mike Leake (2-1) and relievers Nick Vincent and James Pazos.

MILWAUKEE (AP) - Milwaukee center fielder Christian Yelich returned from the disabled list and made a snazzy sliding catch on a fly ball that deflected off the glove of left fielder Hernan Perez.

Zach Davies (1-2) allowed three hits over 6 1/3 innings to win for the first time in four starts this season, and Eric Thames hit a two-run homer.

Jacob Barnes finished with two hitless innings for his second save as the Brewers won consecutive home games for the first time this season.

Thames homered on a slider from Tyler Mahle (1-3) in the third inning.

                    BLUE JAYS 15, ROYALS 5

TORONTO (AP) - Teoscar Hernandez had four hits, including a two-run homer, and Toronto routed Kansas City to complete a three-game sweep.

Toronto (12-5) is off to its best start since 2009. Kansas City (3-13) has lost eight in a row.

Curtis Granderson connected for his ninth career grand slam in Toronto's six-run eighth. J.A. Happ (3-1) pitched six innings to win his third straight start.

Kansas City's Ian Kennedy (1-2) allowed six runs, four earned, and eight hits in five innings.

                    BRAVES 7, PHILLIES 3

ATLANTA (AP) - Ryan Flaherty homered and drove in four runs, Brandon McCarthy outpitched Vince Velasquez and Atlanta beat Philadelphia.

McCarthy (3-0) allowed one run and five hits in 5 1/3 innings.

Flaherty's three-run homer off Velasquez (1-2) gave Atlanta a 3-1 lead in the fifth. The Phillies got within one in the seventh before Dansby Swanson's homer off Edubray Ramos in the bottom of the inning put Atlanta ahead 4-2. Flaherty added a run-scoring single in the Braves' three-run eighth.

Velasquez allowed three runs in six innings.

                    RAYS 4, RANGERS 2

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (AP) - Jake Faria won for the first time since last July 25, allowing one run over six innings to lead Tampa Bay over Cole Hamels and Texas.

Faria (1-1) struck out six and walked one. He had been 0-4 in eight starts and two relief appearances since beating Baltimore.

Hamels (1-3) gave up two hits through five scoreless innings before the Rays rallied to take a 3-1 in the sixth. Denard Span's RBI double with one out in the seventh chased Hamels, who allowed four runs and seven hits.

Alex Colome got his fourth save despite allowing Drew Robinson's RBI single in the ninth.

                    PIRATES 10, ROCKIES 2

PITTSBURGH (AP) - Sean Rodriguez hit a two-run homer that backed Chad Kuhl and helped Pittsburgh avoid a three-game sweep.

Josh Bell drove in three runs and David Freese added a two-run double as Pittsburgh improved to 8-0 in day games. Adam Frazier had three of Pittsburgh's 13 hits and backup catcher Elias Diaz added two hits.

Colorado's Kyle Freeland (0-3) cruised through the first three innings but ran into trouble in the fourth. He was charged with five runs, six hits and two walks in four-plus innings.

Kuhl (2-1) allowed Chris Iannetta's solo home run in the third but otherwise kept Colorado's struggling offense in check. Kuhl struck out four and walked three while giving up four hits.

                      • LEADING OFF: Stanton tries to break slump, Freeman injured
                        April 18, 2018

A look at what's happening around the majors Thursday:

                        SLUMPING STANTON

Giancarlo Stanton looks to make an impact in pinstripes when New York opens a series against Toronto at Yankee Stadium. Stanton is 3 for 35 (.086) with 20 strikeouts in the Bronx this season, and he has been regularly booed by the home fans. Manager Aaron Boone said Tuesday he'd consider sliding Stanton slightly down in the batting order to get the 2017 NL MVP rolling.

                        NOT AGAIN

The Braves are hoping for good news on star slugger Freddie Freeman a day after a scary - and all-too-familiar looking - hit-by-pitch. Phillies lefty Holby Milner hit Freeman's left wrist with a fastball in nearly the same spot where Freeman had a fracture from a plunking last season. Freeman was on an MVP pace in 2017 before the injury cost him nearly two months. Manager Brian Snitker did not have an update on Freeman's status as of Wednesday night.

                        OHTANI IN ACTION?

Two days after exiting a start with a blister on his pitching hand, Shohei Ohtani will be available to DH for the Angels against the Red Sox, though Los Angeles manager Mike Scioscia wouldn't commit to batting the two-way Japanese sensation. Scioscia says Ohtani's inclusion will depend on lineup considerations, and the lefty-hitting Ohtani may not be Scioscia's preferred matchup against Boston left-hander Eduardo Rodriguez. Ohtani is batting .367 with three home runs and 11 RBIs in eight games.

                        TAKE IT ON THE ROAD

At 6-0, the Mets are the only big league club still unbeaten on the road this season, a mark they'll try to maintain as they begin a 10-game road trip in Atlanta. Yoenis Cespedes powered New York past Washington on Wednesday night, hitting a grand slam during a nine-run eighth inning rally that helped the Mets improve to an NL East-leading 13-4. Matt Harvey will start the opener against the Braves still seeking his first win of the season.

                        TOUGH BUC

Emerging Pirates ace Jameson Taillon (2-0, 0.89 ERA) takes a 15-inning scoreless streak into a start against Philadelphia. The 26-year-old threw a one-hit shutout against Cincinnati on April 8, and then followed that with six sharp innings against Miami in a 1-0 win last time out. He'll take on 2015 NL Cy Young Award winner Jake Arrieta (1-0, 3.38 ERA).

Armadillo: Thursday's List of 13: Doing some thinking out loud

                          13) Interesting article in Forbes magazine, written by K. Sean Pickard, about athletes and the taxes they pay. From the article:

“LeBron James was the highest-paid athlete in the U.S. last year with more than $80 million from salary and endorsements. King James will pay his fair share of taxes, but the level of complication for James and his financial team when they are filing is off the charts since he earned money in at least the 21 states where NBA teams are located.”

                          12) From Sports Illustrated, on NFL players and their taxes:

“One All-Pro’s 2016 filing was 400 pages long. He spoke with his tax accountant on a near-daily basis, calling before scheduling a bye-week vacation to income tax-free Florida that saved him $20,000. And this is a guy who has played on the same team his entire career.”

This is the tax formula, for a player who earns $13M a year:

                          ($13,000,000 x 1 day x 13.3% tax rate / 170-day season).

So spending his bye week in a tax-free state can save an NFL player a significant amount of money.

                          11) It was 29 degrees in Dodge City, KS at 5am Tuesday; by 3:00 Tuesday afternoon, the temperature had risen to 93 degrees, which is just a little weird.

                          10) Tuesday night’s Price-Ohtani pitching matchup in Anaheim was Angels’ first home sellout on a Tuesday in four years. Ohtani got a blister on his pitching hand and left after throwing 66 pitches in two innings, allowing three runs.

                          9) This is the first time the Toronto Raptors have ever led a playoff series 2-0.

                          8) Brayden McNabb scored the series-winning goal for Las Vegas in their 1-0 win over the Kings Tuesday; it was Los Angeles that left him unprotected in the expansion draft, and the Golden Knights picked him up. Quite a season the expansion Knights are having, a team in their first-ever season still alive in the NHL playoffs.

                          7) Oakland reliever Ryan Dull struck out four White Sox in the 8th inning Tuesday night, he is the first A’s pitcher ever with four strikeouts in an inning at home (4th all-time).

                          6) Justin Timberlake owns a small part of the NBA’s Memphis Grizzlies.

                          5) Two years ago, the Phillies’ mental skills department was essentially nonexistent. Now they have two full-time staffers and an intern. Mental. skills.

Phillies’ GM Matt Klentak: “Like a lot of things in our business, it’s tough to quantify the importance of it, but we know it’s very important. You can tell talking to current players, ex-players, coaches – anybody that’s played the game knows there’s a tremendous amount of failure that goes along with it. Trying to identify ways to help players minimize the periods of failure even by one day can have an enormous impact on a player, on a team and on a franchise. We’re seeking as best we can to put our players in a position to succeed.”

24 of 30 major league teams have a mental skills coach; learning how to deal with failure is seen as a very big deal now.

                          4) Richmond Spiders tossed sophomore G De’Monte Buckingham off its basketball team for a violation of athletics department policy. Buckingham was the A-14 Rookie of the year two years ago; last year he averaged 12.2 ppg, third on the team, and a team-best 7 rpg

It won’t be hard for Buckingham to find a new home, maybe even at a higher level.

                          3) A’s 12, White Sox 11 (14)— Matt Olson got his first career walk-off hit off James Shields as the gritty Oaklanders rallied back from a 6-1 deficit to win their 4th straight game. Game took just under six hours to play; the two starting pitchers combined to get only seven outs.

                          2) RIP Erin Popovich 67, wife of San Antonio Spurs’ coach Gregg Popovich; the couple were married for 40 years and have two children, two grandchildren.

                          1) Baseball teams have 25-man rosters, for teams who make the playoffs, you need more than 25 guys to get thru a season.

In 2012, the A’s went 94-68, won the AL West on the last day of the season, but they were only 46-44 on July 18 when a sub infielder named Brandon Hicks hit a walk-off homer to beat Texas 4-3, a win that started Oakland on a 7-game winning streak.

A’s wound up beating the Rangers out by a game; Hicks hit only .174 for the A’s that season in 22 games (64 AB) but that hit was huge— without it, they probably don’t make the playoffs.
