MILWAUKEE (AP) Javier Baez grounded a tying single with two outs in the ninth inning, Kris Bryant hit a two-run homer in the 10th and the Chicago Cubs widened their NL Central lead over Milwaukee, beating the Brewers 5-3 Thursday night.

The Cubs now are 4 1/2 games ahead of the Brewers after winning the opener of a four-game series.

Milwaukee was in position to win it in the bottom of the ninth, loading the bases with one out. But Wade Davis (4-1) struck out Domingo Santana and then, after falling behind 3-1 in the count to Orlando Arcia, came back to retire him on an easy comebacker on a full-count pitch.

The Cubs trailed 3-2 when Ian Happ led off the ninth by hitting a grounder that first baseman Neil Walker fielded wide of the bag. Reliever Jeremy Jeffress covered first and Happ was called safe in a close play, a ruling upheld on replay.

Happ moved to second on a one-out grounder and scored when Baez, down to his last strike, singled up the middle.

Bryant hit his 28th homer, connecting off Oliver Drake (3-5).

              INDIANS 4, ANGELS 1

ANAHEIM, Calif. (AP) - Francisco Lindor homered and Cleveland finished a three-game sweep for its 27th win in 28 games.

It matched the 1884 Providence Grays for the best 28-game run in major league history. The Grays went 28-1 before cooling.

After hitting a two-run homer Wednesday night, Lindor came back with a three-run homer in the fifth off Parker Bridwell (8-3) to break a 1-all tie. It was his 32nd home run.

The was Cleveland's 11th straight victory over the Angels, who have lost four of five overall in a struggling effort to overtake the Minnesota Twins for the final AL wild card.

Zack McAllister (2-2) threw 1 1/3 innings of relief. Tyler Olson threw a scoreless ninth for his first career save.

              TWINS 12, TIGERS 1

DETROIT (AP) - Joe Mauer and Jorge Polanco had three hits each, and Minnesota extended its lead for the American League's second wild card.

The Twins are 2 + games ahead of the Angels in the race for the AL's final postseason spot.

Minnesota scored three runs apiece in the fourth and sixth innings, then added four more in the eighth. The Twins rebounded from a three-game sweep at the hands of the New York Yankees, routing a depleted Detroit team that is 4-17 in September after trading Justin Verlander and Justin Upton.

Adalberto Mejia fell one out short of a win, allowing a run and four hits in 4 2/3 innings. Dillon Gee (3-2) was credited with a victory in relief.

Jordan Zimmermann (8-13) yielded three runs and five hits in four innings.

              DODGERS 5, PHILLIES 4

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Pinch-hitter Andre Ethier and Curtis Granderson homered as Los Angeles clinched a tie for the NL West title, ending a four-game losing streak by beating Philadelphia.

The Dodgers can win their fifth straight division crown Friday night with either a victory at home over San Francisco or a loss by second-place Arizona to Miami.

Los Angeles avoided a four-game sweep by the last-place Phillies, winning for just the sixth time in 26 games.

Dodgers third baseman Justin Turner sustained a bruised right thumb when he was hit by a pitch from Mark Leiter Jr. in the first and exited the game. Turner is hitting a team-leading .321 with 21 homers and 70 RBIs.

Ethier tied it with a home run in the seventh off reliever Ricardo Pinto (1-2) that made it 4-all. Chris Taylor followed with a triple and scored the go-ahead run on a grounder by Austin Barnes.

Rookie Walker Buehler (1-0) pitched a hitless inning to win his first major league decision. Kenley Jansen got four outs for his 39th save.

              WHITE SOX 3, ASTROS 1

HOUSTON (AP) - Chris Volstad and Chicago's bullpen covered 8 2/3 innings after starter Carson Fulmer left with a blister.

Volstad (1-0) got his first win since 2012 with the Chicago Cubs. He allowed a run over 4 1/3 innings, and six relievers kept Houston scoreless from there. Juan Minaya worked around two walks in the ninth for his fifth save.

Chicago built a 2-0 lead off Dallas Keuchel (13-5) by the third inning. Brian McCann got Houston within 1 on a solo homer in the bottom of the inning.

              ROYALS 1, BLUE JAYS 0

TORONTO (AP) - Jason Vargas and four relievers combined on a two-hitter, and Melky Cabrera had three hits and the only RBI.

Vargas (17-10) struck out seven in 6 1/3 innings to win his third straight start. None of the three batters he walked advanced beyond first base.

The Blue Jays did not have a runner reach scoring position. The Royals, who have 10 games remaining, are 3 1/2 games behind Minnesota for the second AL wild card spot.

Cabrera's RBI came in the third against Blue Jays left-hander J.A. Happ (9-11).

              ORIOLES 3, RAYS 1

BALTIMORE (AP) - Gabriel Ynoa pitched eight innings of five-hit ball, Manny Machado homered and Baltimore beat Tampa in a matchup between fading AL East teams.

Machado's two-run homer in the first inning off Matt Andriese (5-4) propelled the Orioles to their third win in 15 games.

Ynoa (2-2) struck out three and walked two in earning his first win as a starter in six career tries. He failed to go past five innings in any of his previous starts. Brad Brach pitched the ninth for his 18th save

              CARDINALS 8, REDS 5

CINCINNATI (AP) - Dexter Fowler delivered again, getting three hits and driving in two as St. Louis overcame Scott Schebler's two home runs to beat Cincinnati for a three-game sweep.

The Cardinals began the day 2 + games behind Colorado for the second NL wild card and five games behind the Central-leading Chicago Cubs.

Carlos Martinez (12-11) lasted 6 1/3 innings on a muggy night with a gametime temperature of 85 degrees, allowing four runs and nine hits.

Homer Bailey (5-9) became the third consecutive Reds starter to be lifted without getting through five innings.

              BRAVES 3, NATIONALS 2

ATLANTA (AP) - R.A. Dickey frustrated Washington with his knuckleball for eight innings, Ozzie Albies had three hits and Atlanta beat the Nationals.

Dickey (10-10) gave up two runs, four hits and no walks. He made a strong case that the Braves should pick up his $8 million club option for 2018, but said after the game that he may retire following this season.

Arodys Vizcaino struck out the side in a perfect ninth for his 12th save in 15 chances.

The Braves scored two runs in the fourth off Tanner Roark (13-10).

              • MLB notebook: Mets manager Collins expected to retire
                September 21, 2017

The New York Mets expect manager Terry Collins to retire after this season, the New York Daily News reported Thursday.

The Mets and Collins have not discussed an extension on his contract, which expires at the end of the 2016-17 season.

The Mets have had a disappointing season, but Collins said again this week that he has not decided on his future.

Collins, 68, is in his seventh season as the Mets manager. The team has a 546-578 record under Collins, and the Mets reached the postseason in two of his seasons. Expected to contend for a playoff spot this season, the Mets have struggled to a 65-87 record.

--The Cincinnati Reds announced that the protective netting at Great American Ball Park will be extended to the end of both dugouts after the season.

The announcement comes one day after a young girl was struck in the face by a foul ball at Yankee Stadium.

Major League Baseball issued recommendations for screens or protective netting in December 2015, encouraging teams to have it between the ends of the dugouts closest to home plate.

According to Yahoo! Sports, only 10 of the 30 teams are in compliance with Major League Baseball's recommendation.

--Los Angeles Dodgers third baseman Justin Turner is day-to-day with a bruised right thumb after being hit by a pitch during Thursday's victory over the Philadelphia Phillies.

The Dodgers announced that X-rays were negative.

Turner was hit by a pitch from Mark Leiter Jr. in the first inning of the contest. He initially stayed in the game before being pulled prior to the bottom of the second inning.

--Former major league outfielder Raul Mondesi was sentenced to eight years in prison for corruption and mishandling of public funds while serving as mayor of San Cristobal in the Dominican Republic.

Mondesi, who was also fined 60 million pesos, was the 1994 National League Rookie of the Year and an All-Star in 1995. He had been under house arrest since February while awaiting trial.

The 46-year-old will be prohibited from holding any public office in the country for 10 years.

His son, Raul Mondesi, plays for the Kansas City Royals.

--The St. Louis Cardinals recalled infielder Breyvic Valera from Triple-A Memphis, the team announced .

Valera, who will be making his second stint in the majors, will join the Cardinals prior to the team's game versus the Cincinnati Reds on Thursday night.

                • LEADING OFF: Dodgers try to clinch NL West, Verlander rolls
                  September 21, 2017

A look at what's happening all around the majors Friday:

                  DODGER STADIUM DELIGHT

Los Angeles can clinch its fifth straight NL West title with either a win at Dodger Stadium over San Francisco or a loss by second-place Arizona to Miami. The Dodgers still own the best record in the majors in the race for home-field advantage throughout the postseason, but just by a game over Cleveland after losing 20 of 26. Rich Hill (10-8, 3.60 ERA) starts the potential clincher for LA. The Dodgers also will see how third baseman Justin Turner is feeling, a day after he sustained a bruised right thumb. Turner is hitting a team-leading .321 with 21 homers and 70 RBIs.

                  ASCENDING ASTRO

Justin Verlander has been dominant since being traded from Detroit to Houston. The veteran righty is 3-0, allowing just two earned runs in 21 innings and striking out 26 over three starts for the AL West champion Astros. He tries to keep up the string when he faces the visiting Angels.

                  CLEVELAND (STILL) ROCKS

The record-setting Indians have more history in their sights as they open a series at Seattle. Cleveland has won 27 of 28, a first in the majors since the 1884 Providence Grays, who went 28-1 before the Detroit Wolverines - defunct for 129 years - ended their run. The Indians have reeled off five straight victories since ending a 22-game winning streak, with Trevor Bauer getting their only loss since Aug. 24. Bauer (16-9, 4.41) takes the ball in the opener against Mariners righty Erasmo Ramirez (5-6, 4.56).

                  PITCHING FORWARD

Red Sox righty Rick Porcello tops the majors with 17 losses, a season after he posted 22 wins and took the AL Cy Young Award. With the playoffs nearing, AL East-leading Boston hopes to see him regain his form. He pitched 7 1/3 innings without allowing an earned run in his last start at Tampa Bay, and now faces the Reds at Great American Ball Park.

                      **********

Armadillo: Friday's List of 13: Things I’m looking for this weekend……..

                      13) NYC radio talkshow host Don LaGreca went on an epic rant this week, ripping sabermetrics and the Giants’ offensive line. For LaGreca’s sake (and his vocal chords) we’re hoping the Giants protect Eli Manning better in Philly Sunday than they did in their first two games.

                      12) San Diego State just beat a couple of Pac-12 squads (ASU/Stanford); now the Aztecs visit the Air Force Academy to play an opponent they’ve beaten six times in a row. Trap game?

                      11) Carolina didn’t allow a TD in winning its first two games; now they host a Saints’ squad that is 0-2 for the 4th year in a row and is trying to avoid being 0-3 for the 3rd year in a row. Chances are no matter what, Drew Brees will at least hang a TD or two on the Carolina defense.

                      10) Purdue is obviously much-improved under new coach Brohm, but exactly how much better? Boilermakers host Michigan this week; Wolverines are 3-0, but have scored only one TD in 20 red zone trips, which is no bueno.

                      9) Cleveland Browns as a road favorite? If I owned the Indianapolis Colts, that would make me unhappy. Jacoby Brissett gets his 3rd NFL start; his team scored 0-13 points in losing his first two NFL starts. If Colts lose this game, they’ll be looking for a new coach soon.

                      8) USC just beat Stanford/Texas; they have a Friday night game at Washington State up next, which makes this week’s game at Cal a trap game of sorts. Cal has already upset UNC and Ole Miss, but they also got shredded by the passing game of I-AA Weber State, which opens up the possibility that Trojan QB Darnold could light up the scoreboard in Berkeley.

                      7) Seattle Seahawks scored 10 or less points in five of their last nine road games; sounds like there is tension between offense/defense in the Seattle locker room. Visit to Tennessee this week is going to be an interesting game. Seahawks struggled to get by the 49ers at home last week.

                      6) Michigan State lost 7 starters on both sides of the ball from LY; young Spartans opened year with wins over a couple of MAC teams, but now Notre Dame visits with an offense that ran ball for 400+ yards each in wins over Temple/BC, but was shut down in loss to Georgia. Can MSU shut down the Notre Dame running game?

                      5) Chiefs opened season with a huge win at Foxboro then a home win over Andy Reid’s old team, the Eagles. Now KC heads west to play a Charger team they’ve beaten six times in a row; Bolts are 0-2 with two tough losses where a competent kicker could’ve changed the outcome. What kind of a crowd will the Chargers draw in their second home game in Carson?

                      4) Mississippi State crushed LSU 37-7 last week; can they build on that and win at Georgia?

                      3) Who is playing QB for the Vikings? Backup Case Keenum isn’t a horrible backup; he went 4-5 starting for the Rams LY, but if Minnesota has any aspirations of playing in a Super Bowl in their home stadium they need Sam Bradford’s knees to be healthy. Good luck with that.

                      2) Nebraska fired their AD this week, which has to make the football coach nervous. Huskers host lowly Rutgers this week; Nebraska better start winning lot of games, or the coach can start packing his bags and follow the AD out of Lincoln.

                      1) Cowboys-Cardinals Monday night should be a good one. Home opener for an Arizona squad that was shaky in its first two games on the road; how many locals bought tickets and how many Dallas fans did?
