  • With turmoil at home, Venezuela Little Leaguers get big lift
    August 22, 2017

SOUTH WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. (AP) The players from Venezuela look as happy as any other team, dancing to ''Shake Your Groove Thing'' with the tournament mascot before a win over Mexico and raising the roof to ''Taking Care of Business'' before a loss to Canada.

They go through all the baseball routines - greeting a slugger after a home run, blessing themselves before at-bats and cheering their pitcher. When Omar ''Spark Plug'' Romero cracked a game-ending hit to beat the Dominican Republic 3-2 on Monday night, teammates mobbed him on the field, just as any other team would.

But they might not be at the Little League World Series were it not for the support of a couple of major league players from their home country.

''In a way, this helps them appreciate this in a different way,'' Carolinne Valbuena, the mother of third baseman Jhann Bozo, said through an interpreter.

Venezuela has been caught in internal strife, pitting socialist President Nicolas Maduro against an opposition-led congress increasingly stripped of power. Underlying the civil unrest is a country living in poverty and beset by runaway inflation.

In addition, Maduro's government has been at odds with the Trump administration. The U.S. president said this month he would not rule out a ''military option'' in Venezuela.

Texas Rangers second baseman Rougned Odor first learned to play baseball in Maracaibo, the town that's home to the Venezuelan squad.

''I know everybody on that team, in that league,'' Odor told The Associated Press in Texas this weekend. ''And that's why I tried to help those kids.''

The first step for the players was obtaining a visa to the U.S., and they had to go to Caracas, the nation's capital, to get them. Odor paid for their flights.

Simply flying to Caracas, though, wasn't enough to get the players to the Little League World Series. Visas to the U.S. run about $170.

San Diego Padres pitcher Jhoulys Chacin is also from Maracaibo. He found out from a friend about the players' financial plight and paid for all their visas.

Chacin's Little League team lost to the Maracaibo team that went on to win the Little League World Series in 2000.

''I know how big a deal it is for the young guys ... so they deserve to go,'' Chacin said Sunday in San Diego. ''I'm glad I could help them come here to play in the Little League World Series. That was one of my dreams when I was young.''

Still, there is a part of the Little League World Series experience that's missing for most of the Venezuelan players. Only three parents of players on the team were able to make the trip.

And those three might not have made it if not for a donor from Venezuela who now lives in Lock Haven, Pennsylvania, about a 30-minute drive to Williamsport. The man let them stay at his house, Valbuena said.

Javier Zerpa, who now lives in Maryland, was born in Barquisimeto, Venezuela, and he and his 12-year-old son have gone to each of the last nine Little League World Series. Zerpa and his son have become friends with the Venezuelan team. Although most of the parents are not there, Zerpa said, the kids are still happy to be on the field.

Canada coach Ryan Hefflick said the excitement of the Venezuelan team was evident as soon as it stepped on the field.

''They're a great bunch of kids,'' Hefflick said. ''One of the boys on that team, I think his nickname is `Spark Plug.' They've got a lot of energy.''

    • Yankees' Tanaka activated from DL to start vs. Tigers
      August 22, 2017

New York Yankees right-hander Masahiro Tanaka was activated from the 10-day disabled list to start Tuesday's series opener against the Detroit Tigers, the team announced.

Tanaka, who was sidelined due to right shoulder inflammation, has battled elbow injuries over the last two years.

"I feel good," Tanaka said through an interpreter. "All I can say is that I'm able to do what I just did, as far as flat grounds and bullpens, because the arm is feeling better. I feel like there have been more exercises that I've gone through this time around, so I feel like I am coming back at a faster pace."

Tanaka last pitched on Aug. 9 in a poor outing against the Toronto Blue Jays. The 28-year-old walked a career-high five batters and allowed three runs -- two earned -- and two hits in four-plus innings in the Yankees' 11-5 win in Toronto.

Tanaka owns an 8-10 mark with 4.92 ERA in 23 starts.

      • Tuesday's Best Bet
        August 22, 2017

        Tuesday MLB Best Bet

        Texas Rangers vs. L.A. Angels

The Angels fell 5-3 to Texas in the series opener last night as that first game back at home after a long road trip did L.A. in. Running into a sharp Cole Hamels didn't do the Angels any favors either, but with both teams in the thick of the AL Wild Card picture right now, these are must-have games for both sides. Texas was happy to get a strong performance from their club, and hope starter Tyson Ross can continue that train of momentum tonight.

        Bookmaker.eu Odds: Texas (+126) vs L.A. (-140); Total set at 9.5

In those current AL Wild Card standings, the Angels over the edge over Texas, as L.A. is currently sitting a half-game back of the Twins for that final Wild Card spot, while Texas trails Minnesota by two. Three of the four AL West teams not named Houston are heavily involved in this wildcard chase, which should make for some highly entertaining, and hopefully profitable AL West games over the next month or so.

Last night's opener was as well as it was interesting to see how both teams would reach to being at a different venue for the first time in awhile (L.A back at home after a 9-game road trip, Texas back on the road after a 10-game homestand), and for Texas to cash as +140ish underdogs with Hamels on the hill was a nice little win for MLB bettors smart enough to get on board.

Yet, for this evening's Game 2, it's more about the total for me as both teams – who have each been playing well – should be able to light up the scoreboard a bit.

There definitely is an argument that can be made that with both teams battling tooth and nail for wildcard positioning that a playoff-like, defensive-minded game will be played tonight. It won't be long before runs are at a premium all across baseball, but specifically regarding this series, 'under' bettors should at least wait until tomorrow's game.

Tonight, we've got Tyson Ross squaring off against Ricky Nolasco and neither of them has an ERA below 5.16 on the season. In fact, if you combine both of their average runs scored vs their team over their last three respective starts, you get a total of 11.3 runs. Ross has an ERA of 6.59 (WHIP of 2.05), and Nolasco's ERA is 7.36 over that same span, making it tough for anyone to be convinced that either of them can flip the switch this evening.

Yet, what may be even more supportive of this 'over' play tonight, is the fact that despite both pitchers having allowed an average of 5.3/game or greater over their last three outings, Texas and the Angels are a combined 5-1 SU in those six contests.

That means that both lineups know they've got to produce when these guys are toting the rubber for them, and the 7.7 runs/game of support Ross has gotten, and the 6.3 runs/support Nolasco has gotten over their last three starts definitely suggests that tonight's contest could easily turn into a slugfest.

Texas is 3-0-1 O/U the last four times Ross has been out there, and the Angels are on a 4-1-1 O/U run with Nolasco getting the nod.

So while playing the 'over' in this game tonight will end up being a solid majority play (70%+), the fact that the initial move here was to have the 'juice' on the 'over' open at +105 and currently sit at -115 suggests to me that this is in fact the way to play this game. Both teams would much rather rely on their offenses to get a big win with the pitching matchup we've got, and that should be exactly how this game plays out.

        Odds per - Bookmaker.eu

        Best Bet: Over 9.5 runs

                • MLB roundup: Gonzalez collects 2,00th hit in Dodgers' win
                  August 22, 2017

PITTSBURGH -- Adrian Gonzalez's 2,000th career hit helped propel the Los Angeles Dodgers to an 8-5 win over the Pittsburgh Pirates on Tuesday night at PNC Park.

Gonzalez led off the sixth inning with a double down the right field line. After advancing to third, he scored when Corey Seager singled to right, giving Los Angeles a 6-5 lead.

The Dodgers have won 15 of 19 games in August. The Pirates have gone in the opposite direction, losing eight of their past 10.

Yasmani Grandal put Pittsburgh away with a two-run homer in the seventh that gave Los Angeles an 8-5 lead.

                  Red Sox 9, Indians 1

CLEVELAND -- Doug Fister pitched a one-hitter and Eduardo Nunez had two hits, including a home run, and a career-high five RBIs as Boston rolled past Cleveland at Progressive Field.

In his third start against Cleveland in the last 23 days, Fister gave up a home run to Francisco Lindor leading off the first inning, then held Cleveland scoreless and hitless for the rest of the way for his first complete game since Sept. 26, 2014.

Nunez had a two-run double in the seventh inning and a three-run homer in the eighth.

                  Twins 4, White Sox 1

CHICAGO -- Minnesota shrugged off an early deficit and used three long balls to beat Chicago.

Jorge Polanco, Kennys Vargas and Eddie Rosario each homered against rookie Lucas Giolito, called up Tuesday from Triple-A Charlotte for his Chicago debut. Kyle Gibson (7-10) allowed one run and seven hits for his first victory since July 22.

                  Padres 12, Cardinals 4

ST. LOUIS -- Yangervis Solarte knocked in a career-high six runs as San Diego became the latest team to plunder St. Louis pitching at Busch Stadium.

Solarte capped his big evening in the eighth inning with a two-run homer that traveled an estimated 455 feet, his 14th blast of the year. He became the first player in franchise history to drive in six runs in a game at St. Louis.

San Diego snapped a 4-4 tie in the seventh with six runs. Austin Hedges hit a three-run homer.

                  Marlins 12, Phillies 8 (Game 1)

PHILADELPHIA -- Ichiro Suzuki, only two months shy of his 44th birthday, hit a pinch-hit, three-run homer to break a tie in the seventh inning as Miami won the opener of a doubleheader with Philadelphia.

Two batters after Ichiro homered, Giancarlo Stanton continued his torrid pace since the All-Star break by taking Aaron Nola (9-9) deep over the right field fence and knocking him out of the game. It was Stanton's league-leading 46th home run and 99th RBI.

Miami's J.T. Realmuto belted a three-run homer in the top of the ninth before the Phillies' Andres Blanco and Tommy Joseph hit the game's eighth and ninth home runs in the bottom half.

                  Marlins 7, Phillies 4 (Game 2)

PHILADELPHIA -- Miami swept Philadelphia in the 43rd doubleheader in franchise history behind a combined 23 hits in two games.

Four RBIs from Christian Yelich was just enough for starter Jose Urena to walk off the mound after five innings with his 12th victory.

                  Miami's Marcel Ozuna added a two-run homer.

                  Cubs 13, Reds 9

CINCINNATI -- Ben Zobrist drove in the go-ahead runs with a pinch-hit, two-run double in the seventh inning as Chicago rallied past Cincinnati in the opener of a three-game series at Great American Ball Park.

The Cubs (67-57) scored 10 runs in the final four innings to move 10 games above .500 for the first time this season.

Zobrist, who was scratched from the starting lineup after he was late arriving from his hometown of Nashville, Tenn., because of a rental car snafu, also had an RBI groundout in the eighth. Javier Baez delivered a two-run single in the seventh.

Eugenio Suarez homered twice and had a career-high five RBIs, and Jesse Winker and Scooter Gennett each hit solo homers for Cincinnati.

HOUSTON -- Tanner Roark recovered from a rocky start and Washington delivered with two outs in consecutive innings to claim an interleague win over Houston at Minute Maid Park.

Roark (10-8) pitched into the sixth inning after struggling early before handing over a one-run lead to his bullpen.

With the Astros leading 3-2 in the fourth, Matt Wieters socked a two-run home run to center, his ninth homer of the season, to give the Nationals the lead.

                  A's 6, Orioles 4

BALTIMORE -- Ryon Healy homered twice and drove in three runs, and Jed Lowrie and Khris Davis also went deep as Oakland defeated Baltimore.

Healy (solo) and Lowrie (two-run) both homered in a three-run first inning as Oakland took a 3-0 lead after just five batters against Ubaldo Jimenez. In the fifth, Healy added a two-run homer. It was his fourth multi-homer game this season, and he stretched his hitting streak to 10 games.

Simon Castro (1-1) went two innings and gave up Manny Machado's two-run homer but still earned the win.

                  Yankees 13, Tigers 4

DETROIT -- Masahiro Tanaka came off the disabled list and pitched seven solid innings, and Aaron Judge's record-breaking strikeout streak ended at 37 games as New York pummeled Detroit.

Tanaka (9-10) was making his first start since Aug. 9 after recovering from shoulder inflammation. He held the Tigers to three runs and six hits and didn't walk a batter while striking out four.

Judge had struck out at least once in every game in which he appeared since July 8. He walked on full counts in his first three trips to the plate and added an RBI single. New York's Gary Sanchez hit a pair of two-run homers, including a mammoth blast in the first inning.

                  Braves 4, Mariners 0

ATLANTA -- Nick Markakis homered and drove in a second run with a single as Atlanta defeated Seattle behind rookie Lucas Sims' six spotless innings.

Markakis, who had three hits in the series opener, has a career .326 average with six homers and 30 RBIs in 69 games against Seattle. His homer came in the fourth inning and his RBI single in the fifth.

Sims (2-3) followed up his first victory Thursday at Colorado by giving up three hits and two walks.

                  Rays 6, Blue Jays 5

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. -- Kevin Kiermaier hit a two-run triple in the second inning to help Tampa Bay beat Toronto.

Kiermaier was 2-for-5 and Wilson Ramos had three hits as the Rays won their second consecutive game. Toronto lost its fourth straight.

Alex Colome allowed a run in the ninth but got his major-league-leading 37th save.

                  • MLB notebook: Dodgers place Bellinger, Wood on 10-day DL
                    August 22, 2017

The Los Angeles Dodgers placed first baseman/outfielder Cody Bellinger and left-hander Alex Wood on the 10-day disabled list on Tuesday.

Bellinger, the standout rookie, suffered a mild right ankle sprain while playing the outfield in Detroit on Sunday. The All-Star leads MLB-best Los Angeles with 34 home runs and 79 RBIs.

Wood is making his second trip to the DL this season with a sprained AC joint in his left shoulder. The 26-year-old All-Star went six innings and allowed three runs at Pittsburgh on Monday before coming out of the game and is 14-1 with a 2.41 ERA.

In a pair of corresponding moves, the Dodgers recalled right-handers Josh Ravin and Brock Stewart from Triple-A Oklahoma City. Stewart owns a 1.64 ERA in nine previous appearances -- two starts -- for Los Angeles, while Ravin has a 3.38 ERA in four appearances for the Dodgers this season.

--The Cleveland Indians placed left-hander Andrew Miller and right-hander Danny Salazar on the 10-day disabled list, the team announced.

Miller, who is dealing with patellar tendonitis in his right knee, exited Monday's game against the Boston Red Sox after making seven pitches in the seventh inning. The All-Star reliever had just returned from a 16-day stint on the disabled list.

Miller owns a 4-3 mark with two saves and a 1.65 ERA in 48 appearances this season.

Like Miller, Salazar is also making his second trip to the disabled list this season. The 27-year-old, who is being plagued by right elbow inflammation, has posted a 5-6 record with a 4.30 ERA in 18 appearances this season.

-- Umpire Hunter Wendelstedt is being monitored for concussion-like symptoms and won't work the rest of the series between the Boston Red Sox and Cleveland Indians.

Wendelstedt left Monday's game after getting hit on his facemask by a warmup pitch from Boston pitcher Joe Kelly in the sixth inning.

Kelly entered the game with two outs in the sixth, and Carlos Santana the batter. As Kelly was warming up, Wendelstedt crouched behind Boston catcher Christian Vazquez, to get a look at Kelly's pitches.

One of Kelly's pitches, which appeared to be a high fastball, glanced off Vazquez's glove and hit Wendelstedt on the upper part of his mask. Wendelstedt was staggered by the impact, and went down on one knee. After being checked by the Indians' assistant athletic trainer Michael Salazar, Wendelstedt remained in the game.

--The Texas Rangers placed slugger Joey Gallo on the seven-day concussion list.

The infielder, who is tied for second in the American League with 35 homers, was injured in Sunday's game against the Chicago White Sox. Gallo collided with right-hander Matt Bush while chasing after a popup near third base and suffered a fractured nose as well as experiencing concussion-like symptoms.

Gallo, who has 10 homers in August, has been a prime factor in Texas' recent improvement. The Rangers have won nine of their past 12 games entering Tuesday's contest against the Los Angeles Angels.

The Rangers recalled infielder Phil Gosselin from Triple-A Round Rock to fill the roster opening. Gosselin is batting .146 in 29 major league games with the Pittsburgh Pirates and Rangers this season.

--The Chicago White Sox recalled right-hander Lucas Giolito from Triple-A Charlotte and optioned right-hander Brad Goldberg.

Giolito, who was acquired along with right-handers Reynaldo Lopez and Dane Dunning in the deal that sent center fielder Adam Eaton to the Washington Nationals over the winter, is getting his first chance to impress his new major league club after going 6-10 with a 4.48 ERA in 24 starts for Charlotte.

The 23-year-old former first-round pick went 3-1 with a 1.71 ERA in his last five starts for Charlotte and will start for the White Sox on Tuesday against the Minnesota Twins.

--The Boston Red Sox placed right-hander Matt Barnes on the 10-day disabled list with a lower back strain, the team announced.

Fellow right-hander Hector Velazquez was recalled from Triple-A Pawtucket to replace Barnes, who owns a 6-3 mark with a 3.60 ERA this season.

Barnes has limited the opposition to a .210 batting average with 66 strikeouts against 27 walks in 59 appearances in 2017.

--New York Yankees right-hander Masahiro Tanaka was activated from the 10-day disabled list to start Tuesday's series opener against the Detroit Tigers, the team announced.

--Hall of Fame broadcaster Rafael "Felo" Ramirez, who served as the Spanish radio voice of the Miami Marlins since their inaugural season, died on Monday at the age of 94, the team announced.

Ramirez had been hospitalized since April 26 after he hit his head while falling off the team bus in Philadelphia.

Ramirez, who joined the Marlins as the team's Spanish announced in 1993, was enshrined in Cooperstown after receiving the Ford C. Frick Award for broadcasters in 2001.

"The entire Marlins organization is deeply saddened by the loss of a great friend, Hall-of-Fame broadcaster and community icon, Felo Ramirez," the team said in a statement. "Since our inaugural season, he brought home practically every magical moment in franchise history to generations of fans. A true broadcast legend, Felo lent his voice to over 30 World Series and All-Star Games and his extensive contributions to our game will never be forgotten."

                    • LEADING OFF: Cubs check Bryant, Nats still rolling vs Astros
                      August 23, 2017

A look at what's happening all around the majors Wednesday:

                      BRUISED BRYANT

The Cubs will see how Kris Bryant is feeling, a day after he was hit by a pitch in the left hand and exited the game. The MVP was nicked in the ninth inning, and left-hander Anthony Rizzo shifted across the diamond from first base to make his first career appearance at third. Bryant will likely miss the NL Central leaders' game at Cincinnati.

                      DIVISION DOMINANCE

NL East-leading Washington is once again making things tough on the Astros. The Nationals beat Houston for the ninth straight time Tuesday night, a winning streak that dates to 2012. Edwin Jackson will try to help the Nats make it 10 in a row when he starts on the road vs. Mike Fiers and the AL West leaders.

                      BACK AGAIN

Indians ace Corey Kluber, who is 8-1 with a 2.09 ERA at home this season, faces Boston in a matchup of division leaders. Drew Pomeranz was pitches for the Red Sox - the left-hander was forced to leave his last start in the fourth inning with back spasms.

                      ANOTHER START

Left-hander Mike Montgomery returns to the Cubs' rotation, filling in for the injured Jon Lester. It'll be Montgomery's ninth start of a season that's seen him move back-and-forth between roles for Chicago. In his last appearance on Aug. 17, he threw 4 1/3 shutout innings in relief against the Reds. The Cubs envision him as a starter long-term, but have used him to supplement the rotation and the bullpen this season.

                      ON THE MEND

Mets All-Star closer Jeurys Familia is expected to pitch for Class A Brooklyn, a day after throwing a hitless inning for the Cyclones. He could rejoin the Mets this weekend in Washington. Familia has been out since May following surgery for a blood clot in his shoulder.

Odds to win this week’s Northern Trust Open:

                        10-1— Hideki Matsuyama

                        11-1— Jordan Spieth

                        12-1— Rickie Fowler, Dustin Johnson

                        14-1— Rory McIlroy

                        18-1— Justin Thomas

20-1— Jason Day, Henrik Stenson, Brooks Koepka

                        **************************

                        Wednesday’s List of 13: Mid-week musings……

                        13) Cleveland Cavaliers traded Kyrie Irving to Boston Tuesday in exchange for Isaiah Thomas; Cleveland will also receive Jae Crowder, Ante Zizic and Brooklyn’s 2018 first-round draft pick.

As usual, the NBA offseason is more interesting than the actual season.

                        12) Trade trivia: Kyrie Irving’s father played college ball at Boston University. Also, the deal saves the Cavaliers $29.1M in salary tax payments, which isn’t trivial at all.

                        11) Check out SportsCenter or MLB Network to see the catch Christian Yelich made to end the bottom of the 5th inning in Philly last night, robbing Nick Williams of what would’ve been his second homer of the night. Tremendous catch.

In the 7th inning of the same game, Giancarlo Stanton made a great diving catch, running towards right-center.

                        10) Marlins swept a twinbill in Philly Tuesday. Last time the Marlins were .500 was April 27; they were 10-10- now they’re 62-62, and are 9-2 in their last 11 games.

                        9) Cody Bellinger (ankle) is the 26th different Dodger to go on the DL this season. Alex Wood is also back on the DL with a shoulder problem.

                        8) A high school QB in Utah named Cammon Cooper completed 49 of 71 passes for 599 yards and 10 touchdowns in his season opener— he is committed to play college ball next season at Washington State.

                        7) Someone on Twitter counts transfers in college basketball; their count for this season is 807 kids changing teams from LY. With 351 D-I teams, that is 2.3 kids per team, which is a lot.

Some kids bolt for greener pastures; some are unhappy at their playing time, some get run off by an unhappy coach. 2.3 kids per team is an awful lot of transfers, thats for sure.

                        6) Jets set an NFL record last year by using 75 different players, 49 of whom started at least one game. When you were a home underdog to the 2016 Rams, you know you had a bad year.

                        5) Former big league 1B Ike Davis is trying to make a comeback as a pitcher; so far, he’s thrown 3.2 scoreless innings in the Arizona Rookie League, allowing six baserunners with 5 strikeouts.

Davis’ father Ron was a good relief pitcher back in the day (1978-88); Ike Davis threw two scoreless innings in mop-up work for the A’s couple years ago.

                        4) Young OF Herschel “Boog” Powell of the A’s hit his first big league homer Monday, near the barbecue stand in Camden yards run by 74-year Orioles legend John “Boog” Powell. The two men met for the first time Tuesday.

The elder Powell has been retired for 40 years; he was a powerful lefty-hitting first baseman who played on great Oriole teams.

                        3) David Wright DH’d in the Florida State League Tuesday night, going 0-3 with two strikeouts in his first game action in a long time.

                        2) Adrian Gonzalez got his 2,000th hit last night, quite a milestone for him.

                        1) Phillies’ Nick Pivetta threw 46 pitches in the first inning of last night’s nightcap against Miami. He came within one batter of being yanked in the first inning, but wound up being yanked in the second inning, using 64 pitches to get only four outs.

Bartolo Colon threw 61 pitches in the first inning in a game in Seattle a few years ago, which seems to be the modern record for most pitches thrown in the first inning of a game.

Hottest team: Cubs (7-2 last nine) vs. Reds

Chicago pulled off an exciting home sweep over Toronto this past weekend, as the Cubs rallied once again on Tuesday to beat the Reds, 13-9. The defending champions overcame a pair of three-run deficits to win their fourth in a row, while staying a step ahead of Milwaukee and St. Louis in the NL Central race. Since dropping the final two games at San Francisco earlier this month, the Cubs have scored at least six runs eight times, while improving to 9-5 against the Reds this season.

Mike Montgomery heads to the mound for Chicago as the southpaw makes his first start since July 19 at Atlanta in an 8-2 victory. Montgomery lost the last time he started at Cincinnati on June 30, allowing four earned runs in 6.2 innings of a 5-0 defeat, as the Cubs are 3-5 in his eight starts this season.

Coldest team: Mets (1-8 last nine) vs. Diamondbacks

Things continue to unravel for the “other” New York team after losing the first two games to Arizona. Following an extra-innings loss on Monday, the Mets fell short in a 7-4 defeat on Tuesday to drop to 2-11 in the last 13 games at Citi Field. The Mets have yet to knock off the D-Backs this season by going 0-5 against Arizona, while being held to four runs or fewer in all five losses.

Rookie Chris Flexen looks to give New York its first victory over Arizona as the right-hander had his short two-game winning streak snapped in a 3-1 defeat to Miami in his previous trip to the mound. Flexen has walked more batters than he has struck out (16 to 14), while allowing at least three earned runs in four of his first five starts.

Hottest pitcher: Dylan Bundy, Orioles (12-8, 4.17 ERA)

Baltimore remains under the .500 mark, but Bundy has been on fire since the All-Star break. In his last five starts, the Orioles are 5-0, while Bundy has struck out 10 batters in each of his past two appearances. Bundy dominated the A’s in his previous trip to the mound on August 12 in a 12-5 victory as he tossed six innings and allowed three earned runs. Bundy has benefited from terrific run support during this five-game stretch as the O’s have averaged 9.2 runs per contest, while scoring at least six runs in each of his last seven starts that Baltimore won.

Coldest pitcher: Trevor Williams, Pirates (5-6, 4.71 ERA)

Pittsburgh fell to 0-5 against Los Angeles this season after dropping an 8-5 decision at home on Tuesday. Williams is winless in four of his past five starts, while allowing a season-high eight earned runs in three innings of an 11-10 setback to St. Louis his last time out. The right-hander looks to avenge a 12-1 defeat to the Dodgers at Chavez Ravine in early May as he gave up eight runs (six earned) in three innings, as the Pirates look to beat the Dodgers for the first time since August 2016.

Biggest OVER run: Phillies (7-2 last nine)

Philadelphia may be going nowhere at this point of the season, but the Phillies are playing exciting games. On Tuesday, the Phillies lost both games of a double-header to the Marlins, but eclipsed the OVER in each contest, while allowing 19 runs to Miami. In four of the past five contests, Philadelphia’s pitching staff has given up at least seven runs, while losing five of its previous six games at Citizens Bank Park.

Biggest UNDER run: Athletics (5-0 last five)

Oakland held off Baltimore on Tuesday, 6-4, but still cashed the UNDER on the high total of 11. In fact, both games between the A’s and Orioles have reached 10 runs, but the inflated total of 11 kept Oakland’s UNDER streak going. Oakland reached the six-run mark on Tuesday after scoring a total of six runs in its previous three games combined. Sean Manaea will look for a better showing against Baltimore after not escaping the first inning in a 12-5 defeat on August 12, while the Oakland southpaw is 8-2 to the OVER in his last 10 outings.

Matchup to watch: Nationals vs. Astros

Washington and Houston continue its three-game series on Wednesday as these two elite squads may see each other again in the World Series. The Nationals edged the Astros in the opener, 4-3 to cash as +160 underdogs, as Washington owns one fewer victory (75) than Houston (76). Washington improved to 7-0 in its previous seven series openers, while looking to build on a 7-4 record in its past 11 Game 2’s of a road series.

Edwin Jackson takes the mound for Washington as the right-hander owns a solid 4-2 mark in his six starts since coming over from Baltimore in July. Jackson has allowed one earned run in three of his past four starts, while picking up road victories over the Angels and Padres.

Mike Fiers counters for Houston, as the right-hander is going backwards of late with the Astros dropping four of his past five starts. The Astros are 1-2 in his last three home outings as Houston rallied for a 7-6 walk-off victory in the lone win in this stretch as Fiers yielded five runs in that victory. Houston is looking to avoid its fifth losing streak of at least three games at Minute Maid Park this season.

                            Betcha didn’t know:
The Padres blasted the Cardinals in their series opener at Busch Stadium on Tuesday to snap a six-game losing streak to St. Louis dating back to last April. San Diego is worth a look on Wednesday as a +155 underdog as the Padres have compiled a solid 6-3 record in its past nine Game 2’s of a road series.
