        • Sunday's Diamond Notes
          June 18, 2017

Hottest team: Diamondbacks (6-0 past six games, 9-1 past 10 overall)

The Diamondbacks have picked up six consecutive victories, taking advantage of the schedule. Since May 7, Arizona has faced just one team (the Milwaukee Brewers) over .500 across the past 36 games. As such, the Snakes find themselves nipping at the heels of the Rockies in the National League West. The Diamondbacks have outscored the Phillies 10-5 in the past two games, and they're averaging 7.1 runs per game over the past 10 outings while allowing just 3.2 runs per game during the span. With Robbie Ray on the hill, they have a great shot at a sweep. The Diamondbacks are 5-0 in Ray's past five outings, 7-1 in his past eight against teams with a losing record and 5-1 over his past six on the road.

Coldest team Yankees (0-5 past five games)

The Yankees haven't found themselves in the 'cold' column very often this season, but a five-game losing streak has them reeling. New York turns to minor-league recall Luis Cessa to stop the skid in Oakland opposite Jharel Cotton in a potentially high-scoring game. New York has posted a 1-4 mark over their past five road outings against a right-handed starter, but Cotton could the elixir to their road ills. The A's are 0-5 over their past five with Cotton on the hill, and 1-4 over his past five outings at O.co Coliseum.

Hottest pitcher: Jason Vargas, Royals (9-3, 2.10 ERA)

Vargas takes the ball looking to stay hot in his native Golden State. He allowed just one earned run, five hits and a walk with six strikeouts over seven innings in a win at San Francisco last time out, winning his fourth consecutive start while lowering his ERA to 2.10. Vargas has the second-best ERA in the majors, and he is a respectable 4-2 with a 2.45 ERA in six outings on the road. He is even better in day starts, going 2-0 with a 0.96 ERA in three day games this season, allowing just two hits over 18 2/3 innings under the sun. The Royals are 20-8 over his past 28 assignments, 9-1 over his past 10 against a team with a losing overall record and 6-0 over his pst six starts against AL West foes.

Coldest pitcher: Bronson Arroyo, Reds (3-5, 7.01 ERA)

Arroyo has been horrendous this season, allowing 53 earned runs and 87 hits over 68 innings across 13 starts. He is 0-1 with an 8.27 ERA in three starts in the month of June, and he has allowed 16 homers over his past 43 innings across eight starts. An average of two homers per starts simply will not do at any level. Oddly enough, the Reds are 5-1 over his past six starts at GABP, but they're 1-12 in their past 13 games against National League West opponents and 2-6 in their past eight at home against southpaws. The Dodgers counter with Clayton Kershaw, and they're 4-1 over his past five road outings against the Reds while they are 6-2 in their past eight trips to the Queen City overall.

Biggest UNDER run: Phillies (3-1-1 past five games, 6-2-2 past 10 overall)

The Phillies offense has been awful all season, as Philly limps in with a minus-89 run differential. That's 28th in the majors, and their flagging offense is a major reason for their struggles. Over the past 12 outings they're averaging just 2.4 runs per game on offense. The key to the 'under' run has been their improved pitching lately, as they're allowing just 4.6 runs per game during the past 10 outings. Arizona's Ray will help the 'under', too, as the total has gone under in five of Ray's past six road outings.

Biggest OVER run: Athletics (8-1-1 past 10 games overall)

The 'over' is an impressive 8-1-1 over Oakland's past 10, and they're not just hitting the total with poor pitching, but with solid offensive production, too. They have averaged a healthy 6.7 runs per game in three wins in the first three outings against the Yankees, while allowing 5.0 runs per game. The over is 12-3-2 in Oakland's past 17 games overall, while going 12-3-1 over their past 16 at home against teams with a winning overall record. For what it's worth, the over is also a perfect 8-0 over their past eight games on Sunday while going 7-0 in their past seven vs. AL East opponents. The over is also 7-2 in their past nine overall while going 5-2 in their past seven vs. RHP.

Matchup to watch: Astros vs. Red Sox

The Astros and Red Sox have had an entertaining series so far, splitting the first two battles at Minute Maid. They'll decide a winner of the series in the rubber match on Sunday Night Baseball. Houston's 7-1 win on Saturday was a rarity lately, as they're just 4-7 over their past 11 games. They received a surprisingly effective start from David Paulino in the middle game on Saturday while touching up Rick Porcello. The Red Sox are 7-1 in their past eight against AL West foes while going 6-1 in their past seven against a right-handed starter. They have won 10 of their past 14 against teams with a winning overall record, too, while the Astros are just 1-4 in their past five at Minute Maid, and 7-17 over the past 24 at home against a team with a winning overall mark. The 'Stros have won just two of Joe Musgrove's past eight home outings, too.

Betcha didn’t know: The Rockies are looking to complete a four-game sweep of the rival Giants. They're 9-1 over their past 10 against Colorado, including 6-0 over their past six meetings at Coors Field. Colorado has won 11 of their past 14 games overall, too, and they'll turn to Tyler Chatwood to keep up the good word. He has allowed one run in each of his past three starts, all on the road. He has a rather dismal 7.03 ERA in six starts at Coors Field. However, he posted a shutout in San Francisco earlier this season for the only complete game shutout of his career. He is also 7-3 with a 2.81 ERA over 14 career appearances (13 starts) against the Giants.

Biggest public favorite: Rangers (-190) vs. Mariners

Biggest public underdog: Nationals (+140) at Mets

Biggest line move: Astros (+130 to -115) vs. Red Sox

              June 18, 2017

DENVER (AP) Nolan Arenado completed the cycle with a three-run homer in the bottom of the ninth inning, and the Colorado Rockies stunned the San Francisco Giants by rallying for a 7-5 victory Sunday.

Arenado hit the first pitch he saw from All-Star closer Mark Melancon (1-2) into the left-field seats to finish a four-game sweep. The slugger was mobbed at home plate by teammates, with a frenzied sellout crowd chanting ''MVP! MVP!''

With the best record in the National League, the surprising Rockies have won five straight overall and nine in a row against the Giants.

Last-place San Francisco has dropped six consecutive games and nine of 11.

Melancon retired his first batter, but three singles produced a run and brought up Arenado, who tripled in the first, singled in the fourth and had an RBI double in the sixth. He hit a 91 mph fastball for his 15th homer and first career cycle.

Carlos Estevez (4-0), called up from the minors before the game, struck out one batter in the ninth for the win.

              INDIANS 5, TWINS 2

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) - Edwin Encarnacion homered twice, Trevor Bauer pitched seven strong innings and Jose Ramirez had his sixth straight multihit game as Cleveland completed a four-game sweep of Minnesota.

Cleveland came into the series trailing the Twins by two games in the AL Central. The sweep vaulted the Indians two games ahead and gave the defending AL champions sole possession of first place in the division for the first time since May 10.

Bauer (6-5) allowed two runs and four hits with two walks and eight strikeouts. He retired 15 straight before hitting Kennys Vargas with a pitch in the seventh. Eduardo Escobar and Eddie Rosario followed with RBI hits to put Minnesota on the board.

Kyle Gibson (4-5) retired nine straight before Encarnacion hit a 443-foot drive to the second deck in left field to put Cleveland on top 1-0 in the third.

Andrew Miller worked a hitless ninth for his first save of the season.

              DODGERS 8, REDS 7

CINCINNATI (AP) - Logan Forsythe and Justin Turner homered, Kenta Maeda (5-3) pitched five strong innings and drove in two runs, and Kike Hernandez made a spectacular game-saving catch as Los Angeles held on to beat Cincinnati.

Cincinnati nearly rallied all the way back from an 8-1 deficit in the sixth inning. However, Hernandez went back to the left-field wall and made an awkward leaping grab of Joey Votto's attempt at a go-ahead extra-base hit with runners on first and third in the eighth.

Kenley Jansen got the last three outs for his 15th save.

Bronson Arroyo (3-6), who was roughed up for nine runs and a career-high 13 hits in his last start at San Diego, lasted only three innings against the Dodgers, giving up five runs and seven hits.

              CUBS 7, PIRATES 1

PITTSBURGH (AP) - John Lackey and three relievers combined on a three-hitter, and Anthony Rizzo homered among his three hits to lead Chicago past Pittsburgh.

The defending World Series champions took two of three in Pittsburgh and improved to 34-34 this season.

Lackey (5-7) allowed two hits and struck out four over six innings. Carl Edwards Jr., Hector Rondon and Brian Duensing finished up for the Cubs.

The first four Chicago runs came against Jameson Taillon (3-2), who made his second start since returning from surgery to treat testicular cancer. Taillon gave up eight hits in five innings while striking out four.

              ATHLETICS 4, YANKEES 3

OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) - Khris Davis hit a go-ahead two-run homer in the third that held up to back rookie Jharel Cotton's first victory since May 4, and Oakland completed a four-game sweep of slumping New York.

New York welcomed back flame-throwing closer Aroldis Chapman but still lost its season-high sixth straight game following a six-game winning streak, finishing a disappointing 1-6 road trip with a weekend dud against the American League's worst team.

Cotton (4-7) struck out six over 6 1/3 innings for his second-longest start of the season.

Luis Cessa (0-1) allowed four runs and five hits in four innings for New York.

              DIAMONDBACKS 5, PHILLIES 4, 10 INNINGS

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Rey Fuentes hit his first major league home run in the 10th inning, lifting Arizona over Philadelphia.

Fuentes entered in the eighth inning as a pinch runner and was caught stealing. However, the rookie redeemed himself with a homer off Jeanmar Gomez (3-2) with one out in the 10th.

Hector Neris entered with a 4-3 lead in the ninth and failed to pick up a save for the second time in eight chances.

Archie Bradley (3-1) pitched a scoreless ninth, stranding a pair of baserunners. Fernando Rodney earned his 20th save in 23 chances.

              BREWERS 2, PADRES 1

MILWAUKEE (AP) - Jimmy Nelson struck out 10 in his first career complete game and Milwaukee got home runs from Hernan Perez and Manny Pina to edge San Diego on Sunday.

Nelson (5-3) allowed six hits and two walks while throwing 118 pitches in his 89th major league start. He gave up only an unearned run and lowered his ERA to 3.28.

Leading off the sixth inning, Perez hit his 10th home run into the Brewers' bullpen off starter Luis Perdomo (1-4). One batter later, Pina connected on a 1-2 pitch for his fourth of the season to give Milwaukee a 2-1 lead.

              ORIOLES 8, CARDINALS 5

BALTIMORE (AP) - Ubaldo Jimenez was stellar in his first start since May 22, Mark Trumbo homered for the second consecutive day and Baltimore beat St. Louis.

Baltimore homered 10 times while winning two of three from the Cardinals to improve to .500 (34-34). It was the first time the Orioles won a three-game series since May 29-31 against the Yankees.

Jimenez (2-2) will likely stay in the rotation after allowing two runs and four hits with three strikeouts and two walks over seven innings. Brad Brach picked up his 12th save for Baltimore.

St. Louis' Lance Lynn (5-4) allowed seven runs and nine hits with five strikeouts and a career-high four home runs over 4 2/3 innings.

              RAYS 9, TIGERS 1

DETROIT (AP) - Logan Morrison homered twice and Steven Souza Jr. hit his first career grand slam as Tampa Bay beat Detroit to split a four-game series.

Derek Norris and Evan Longoria also homered for the Rays. Jake Faria (3-0) allowed one run, six hits and a walk in seven innings. He struck out a career-high nine.

Buck Farmer (2-1) allowed seven runs in 2 1/3 innings, and has allowed 13 runs in 4 2/3 innings over his last two starts.

              MARINERS 7, RANGERS 3

ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) - Kyle Seager drove in three runs with three doubles, Christian Bergman pitched effectively into the sixth inning and Seattle beat Texas.

Danny Valencia's two-run homer capped a four-run first against Texas ace Yu Darvish (6-5), and the Mariners beat the right-hander for the first time in eight tries on the road.

Bergman (4-4) permitted four hits and two runs in 5 2/3 innings after giving up nine runs in 2 2/3 innings in his last start in Minnesota.

              METS 5, NATIONALS 1

NEW YORK (AP) - Jacob deGrom hit his first major league home run and shut down a bruising Washington lineup on three singles for eight dominant innings, giving New York a win that prevented a four-game sweep.

The NL East-leading Nationals had been 6-0 at Citi Field this season and had battered the Mets in three games this week, never trailing while totaling 18 extra-base hits. But they had trouble touching the blue-stitched balls - used all around Major League Baseball on Father's Day - thrown by deGrom (6-3).

A career .199 hitter in 176 at-bats coming in, deGrom also provided the biggest jolt. He hit the first pitch of the third inning from Joe Ross (3-3) over the wall in left-center.

BLUE JAYS 7, WHITE SOX 3

TORONTO (AP) - Kendrys Morales and Russell Martin each homered to help Toronto beat Chicago.

Martin tied the game in the sixth with his seventh home run of the season, a two-run shot to the center field fence that bounced off the glove of outfielder Willy Garcia and over. Ryan Goins tripled home Steve Pearce against Anthony Swarzak (3-2) for the tiebreaking run two batters later.

J.A. Happ (2-4) picked up his first home win of the season, giving up three runs over 6 2/3 innings.

              BRAVES 5, MARLINS 4

ATLANTA (AP) - Brandon Phillips' single drove in Johan Camargo from third base in the ninth inning to give Atlanta a win over Miami.

It was the second straight game-ending hit for Phillips, whose run-scoring single in the 10th gave Atlanta an 8-7 victory Saturday.

Camargo hit a one-out infield single off Drew Steckenrider (0-1) and moved to third on Ender Inciarte's line-drive single up the middle.

Jim Johnson (5-1) pitched a scoreless ninth.

              ROYALS 7, ANGELS 3

ANAHEIM, Calif. (AP) - Jason Vargas earned his 10th win, most in the majors, and Salvador Perez hit a three-run homer as Kansas City beat Los Angeles.

Mike Moustakas had a three-run double for the Royals, who went 7-2 on their California trip and scored at least seven runs in six of those victories.

Vargas (10-3) gave up three runs and eight hits in six innings, and Kelvin Herrera got two outs for his 15th save. JC Ramirez (6-5) allowed five runs in three innings.

              • Monday’s six-pack

                — No left-handed golfer has ever won the US Open.

                — One of the appeals of golf; Justin Thomas is 5-10, 145 pounds. He shot a 63 at US Open.

                — NHL announced a salary cap of $75M next season, with salary floor set at $55.4M.

                — Felix Hernandez will be back in Seattle’s rotation Friday after a strong rehab outing for AAA Tacoma Saturday night.

                — Major leagues used baseballs with blue seams Sunday to promote cancer awareness.

                — Dodgers 8, Reds 7— Kike Hernandez made a great catch to save the game, crashing into the leftfield fence. Cincinnati has now lost nine games in a row.

                ************************

                Monday’s List of 13: Wrapping up a sports weekend……..

                13) After the Markelle Fultz trade goes thru, the Celtics will have eight first round picks in the next three drafts— seriously, I’m not sure what they’ll do with all of them.

                12) Fultz played 35:00+ in 11 of 13 Pac-12 games for Washington last winter, but sat out six of the Huskies’ last eight games with “a sore knee”; wonder how that knee is now. He played 30-31 minutes in the two games he played less than 35:00 in.

                11) Paul George told the Pacers he won’t re-sign with them next summer; sounds like he is headed back to LA to play for the Lakers. Helps Lonzo Ball’s chances of being drafted by the Lakers, since it decreases chance that LA will draft Josh Jackson this week.

                10) On December 19, 2014, this baseball trade was made:

Padres sent Joe Ross and Trea Turner to Washington.
Padres sent Jake Bauers, Rene Rivera and Burch Smith to Tampa Bay.

Rays sent Ryan Hanigan, Wil Myers and two minor leaguers to San Diego.

Washington sent Steven Souza Jr and a minor leaguer to Tampa Bay.

Unusual trade: all three teams got a very good player in the deal; Tampa Bay probably got the worst of it, unless Bauers develops into a good big leaguer.

                9) Steven Souza Jr and Colorado’s Pat Valiaka homered on both Mother’s Day and Father’s Day this season.

                8) Movie trivia: The quarterbacks from Varsity Blues and Friday Night Lights both wound up in Fast & Furious movies- there have been at least eight of those movies made. Just discovered ‘em, so I’m withholding comment until I’ve seen them all.

                7) June 26, Ice Cube’s 3-on-3 league debuts on TV; I’ll watch it once out of curiosity, but it is up to them if I watch it more than once.

                6) Submitted for your perusal, as Rod Serling used to say at the start of the Twilight Zone: The day Johnny Miller shot 63 at the US Open at Oakmont. three players broke 70. On Saturday, with Justin Thomas also shooting 63, 18 players broke 70.

                5) Western Kentucky football coach Mike Sanford Jr has his dad on his staff as special teams coordinator and running backs coach – the elder Sanford was head coach at UNLV from 2005-9.

                4) Pitcher Brock Stewart warmed up for the Dodgers late in the game Sunday; his agent picked him up at the Cincinnati airport in the fifth inning, after his call-up from AAA Oklahoma City. Not a lot of time for stretching there. The agent’s name is Joe Speed, by the way, which is a tremendous name.

                3) In five games batting leadoff for the Cubs, Anthony Rizzo is 9-22 with three homers, five runs scored, eight RBI. We’re going to see more of this, elite hitters moving to the top of the order.

                2) They were talking on TV the other day about some major league infielders practice with flat gloves, which forces them to use two hands to field grounders.

I actually tried this coaching Little League in 1998, with the kids using their winter gloves, but we only did it one day, I can’t remember why. It went pretty well and it is a good idea. Got the idea from an umpire who recommended it to m

                1) Rockies 7, Giants 5— Not only did Nolan Arenado hit a walk-off homer for first-place Colorado, he hit for the cycle. Rockies are having a storybook season with a lot of young starting pitchers. Will they hold up?

                • MLB notebook: White Sox put Gonzalez on DL, activate Shields
                  June 18, 2017

The Chicago White Sox placed right-handed starting pitcher Miguel Gonzalez on the 10-day disabled list Sunday with A/C joint inflammation in his right shoulder.

The move, retroactive to June 15, was announced prior to Sunday's series finale against the Blue Jays at Rogers Centre in Toronto.

Gonzalez, 33, is 4-8 with a 5.49 ERA over 78 2/3 innings in 13 starts this season, his second with the White Sox.

The White Sox also returned right-hander James Shields from his injury rehabilitation assignment to Triple-A Charlotte and reinstated him from the disabled list so he could start Sunday's game.

--The Washington Nationals placed right-handed relief pitcher Shawn Kelley on the 10-day disabled list with a right trapezius strain. The move is retroactive to June 17.

Kelley, 33, is on the disabled list for the second time this season. In 22 appearances over 18 innings, Kelley is 3-2 with four saves, one hold and a 7.00 ERA.

The Nationals also recalled right-hander A.J. Cole from Triple-A Syracuse.

--The Cincinnati Reds reinstated catcher Stuart Turner from the 10-day disabled list and designated right-hander Asher Wojciechowski for assignment.

In addition, the Reds recalled right-hander Lisalverto Bonilla from Triple-A and optioned right-hander Jake Buchanan to Louisville.

Turner, a Rule Five draft pick out of Minnesota's farm system last December, was on the disabled list since May 20 with a strained right hamstring. He was hitting .143 with three RBIs in 14 games before the injury.

Wojciechowski lasted just 2 1/3 innings on Saturday in the Los Angeles Dodgers' 10-2 victory over the Reds, giving up six runs (five earned).

                  • LEADING OFF: Indians set sights on O's, Kershaw faces Mets
                    June 18, 2017

A look at what's happening all around the majors Monday:

                    TURNING THE PAGE

Red-hot Jose Ramirez and the Cleveland Indians open a four-game series at Baltimore after storming atop the AL Central with a four-game sweep of Minnesota over the weekend. Ramirez had his sixth straight multihit game Sunday, and Cleveland also got two homers from Edwin Encarnacion, who has six homers in his last 10 games. ''We had a big series here and we did a really good job,'' manager Terry Francona said. ''Now we'll get on the flight, we'll turn the page quickly, and we'll set our sights on Baltimore. That's our next big series. That's how we always look at it.''

                    TOUGH TASK

Yoenis Cespedes and the Mets begin a 10-game road trip in Los Angeles against Dodgers ace Clayton Kershaw (9-2, 2.23 ERA). The three-time Cy Young Award winner is 8-1 with a 1.49 ERA in 13 career starts vs. New York, which has batted a combined .177 against him. It's been a challenging stretch at the plate for the Mets, who lost to Washington star Max Scherzer on Friday and hard-throwing teammate Stephen Strasburg on Saturday. Zack Wheeler (3-4, 4.48) gets the ball for New York, coming off the worst start of his career vs. the Cubs.

                    ROCKIN' ROYALS

Mike Moustakas and the Royals return home after going 7-2 on their California road trip and scoring at least seven runs in six of those wins, bolstered by 18 homers. ''They have been some big homers, too,'' first baseman Eric Hosmer said. ''As long as they keep coming in big spots like that, we'll take every single one.'' Moustakas has 19 RBIs this month. On the mound, Jason Hammel (3-6, 5.05 ERA) faces Boston for the first time since 2013. Hammel has allowed just one run in each of his last two starts.

                    FADING FAST

Looking to stop a nine-game losing streak, the last-place Reds (29-39) send Scott Feldman (5-5, 4.29) to the mound at Tampa Bay. The skid is the longest for Cincinnati since an 11-game slide in May 2016. Six of the losses came against the Dodgers - and it sounds as though at least one change could be forthcoming. Bronson Arroyo (3-6, 7.35) planned to meet with manager Bryan Price late Sunday or sometime Monday after getting roughed up in his past two outings. Attempting a comeback this year after missing 2 1/2 seasons with arm injuries, the 40-year-old righty revealed Sunday that he'd been receiving cortisone shots in his shoulder since spring training. ''We tried to patch it up and it worked for a while, but I've been hit around the yard for a while now,'' Arroyo said. ''Have I thought, `This time might be my last time on the field?' Yeah.''

                    DEEP THREATS

Fueled by Eric Thames, the NL Central-leading Milwaukee Brewers have hit at least two homers in four consecutive games and gotten each of their last 15 runs via the long ball. Thames has four homers in his past five games and 20 for the season. All that power could be trouble for Pirates starter Gerrit Cole (4-6, 4.54), who has allowed eight homers over his past five starts. Matt Garza (3-2, 4.17) is up for Milwaukee and has allowed 15 earned runs in his last four outings, a span of 20 innings.

                    CLUTCH CANADIAN

Russell Martin has seven home runs this season, and five have either tied the game or given Toronto a lead, including his tying shot in a victory over the White Sox on Sunday. The Blue Jays are set to open a four-game series at Texas, the site of last year's brawl that included Rougned Odor's punch to the face of Jose Bautista.

                            • Monday's Diamond Notes
                              June 19, 2017

Hottest team: Indians (5-0 past five games)

The Indians were in a 3-7 tailspin from June 2-14, slipping two games behind the Twins for first place in the American League Central Division. A four-game sweep in Minnesota over the weekend has Cleveland flying high again all of a sudden. Now, they'll look to stay hot in Baltimore against the skidding Orioles. It's a pretty solid pitching matchup with Corey Kluber on the hill against O's fireballer Dylan Bundy. The Tribe are 21-6 over Klubot's past 27 starts, while going 7-3 across his past 10 road outings. The O's have pieced together four wins over their past five at Oriole Park, but they're just 3-8 over the past 11 overall. Baltimore has also dropped six in a row against teams with a winning overall record.

Coldest team Giants (0-6 past six games, 4-15 past 19 overall)

The Giants find themselves in a strange spot, as they're mired in last place in the National League West Division and 19 1/2 games behind the first-place Rockies following their six-game losing streak and sweep in Denver. The Giants have a miserable minus-82 run differential, third-worst in the National League. They'll turn to Johnny Cueto against the equally disappointing R.A. Dickey in Monday's series opener at SunTrust Park in suburban Atlanta. The Giants are just 7-21 over their past 28 road games against a right-handed starter and they're 0-6 in their past six overall vs. RHP. If anyone is going to save the Giants it's Cueto, as San Francisco is 8-3 over his past 11 road outings against teams with a losing record, and 18-5 in his past 23 against teams with a losing overall mark.

Hottest pitcher: Clayton Kershaw, Dodgers (9-2, 2.23 ERA)

Kershaw was originally scheduled to start Sunday in Cincinnati, but he had his starts pushed back to Monday to start at home, lining him up for a pair of starts in the upcoming week. The Mets are probably not terribly pleased. The southpaw has posted a 2-0 record and 1.71 ERA with six walks and 27 strikeouts over 21 innings, lasting seven innings in all three of the quality starts. The Dodgers have posted an 8-1 record over their past nine series openers, and having Kershaw on the bump gives them a great chance to stay hot in regards to that trend. Los Angeles has managed a 42-11 record over his past 53 starts at Chavez Ravine.

Coldest pitcher: R.A. Dickey, Braves (4-5, 5.35 ERA)

The knuckleballer Dickey was tagged for eight earned runs over five innings in a loss June 13 at Washington in his most recent start, and he has won just once over the past eight starts. And that win came against the lowly Phillies, so don't get terribly carried away. If anything, Dickey has a chance to win because he faces a team actually colder than he is -- the Giants. They enter play with a lengthy losing streak to drop them into the NL West basement. However, San Francisco did rough him up for seven runs - six earned - and five walks over six innings in a loss May 28 in the Bay Area.

Biggest UNDER run: Rangers (7-3 past 10 games overall)

The Rangers were back to their 'under' ways after falling to the Mariners 7-3 in Sunday's series final, coming in by a half-run. The 'over' had cashed in three in a row for Texas, but that's mostly due to the struggles of the Mariners pitching staff. The under has cashed in six of the past eight vs. RHP, while going 13-5-1 in their past 19 series openers. The over is 9-3-1 in Texas' past 13 at Globe Life Park in Arlington, however. The Blue Jays might help Austin Bibens-Dirkx cash the under Monday, as the under is 6-1-1 in Toronto's past eight vs. AL West foes. The under is also 4-1-1 in their past six road contests.

Biggest OVER run: Orioles (8-2 past 10 games overall)

The 'over' has connected in six consecutive home games for the O's, and they found their offense against the Cardinals pitching staff over the weekend. Baltimore averaged 8.3 runs per game in the three-game set while their pitching staff was dinged for 7.7 runs per outing. The O's have given up at least five runs in 15 straight games dating back to June 3. That over will be put to the test, however, as the under is 12-4 over the past 16 meetings with the Indians, while going 7-0 in the past seven meetings at Camden Yards.

Matchup to watch: Dodgers vs. Mets

East meets West when the Mets invade Chavez Ravine to battle Kershaw and the Dodgers. L.A. aims for their fourth consecutive victory heading into a nine-game homestand. The Dodgers were awfully impressive sweeping the Reds at GABP in Cincinnati, although the way the Reds have been going it isn't very shocking. The Mets should give the Dodgers a much stiffer test, especially with Zack Wheeler on the hill. He was pounded for eight runs over just 1 2/3 innings last time out against the Cubs, but he has three quality starts over the past four outings and five starts with three or fewer runs allowed while going at least six innings in five of the past seven. The Dodgers have won 11 of Kershaw's past 13 starts against the Mets. The under is 6-0 in Kershaw's past six against the Mets, while going 5-1 in the past six at Dodger Stadium.

                              Betcha didn’t know:
The top pitching prospect for the Athletics, Daniel Gossett, was torched for seven runs - six earned - while retiring just 10 batters in his major league debut in Miami on Wednesday. He'll give the home fans a look as the Astros check into O.co for a divisional series. Gossett was 3-3 with a 3.41 ERA and 54 strikeouts over 60 2/3 innings at the Triple-A level. Since that ugly outing in Miami the A's returned home for a surprising four-game sweep against the first-place New York Yankees. Oakland's offense has averaged 6.0 runs per game over the past five outings to back their pitchers with plenty of run support lately.

Biggest public favorite: Dodgers (-300) vs. Mets

Biggest public underdog: Royals (+115) vs. Red Sox

Biggest line move: Royals (+105 to -115) vs. Red Sox

                              • Braves' Dickey, Giants' Cueto hook up again
                                June 18, 2017

ATLANTA -- A rematch between two veteran right-handers is on tap when the San Francisco Giants meet the Atlanta Braves in their first visit to new SunTrust Park.

The series opener features Atlanta's R.A. Dickey (4-5, 5.35 ERA) against San Francisco's Johnny Cueto (5-6, 4.57 ERA). The same pitchers faced off on May 28, with Cueto and the Giants coming away with a 7-1 victory.

Cueto pitched six strong innings in that outing, allowing one run on six hits, with eight strikeouts. On the other side, Dickey struggled to go six innings in that meeting and allowed seven runs (six earned) on six hits and five walks.

That turned out to be one of Cueto's best starts of the season. In his three appearances since, Cueto has gone 0-2 with a 5.40 ERA. He survived only 5 2/3 innings against Kansas City on June 14 when he allowed five runs on 10 hits, three of them home runs, and three walks.

"For him to give up three home runs, that's not Johnny," San Francisco manager Bruce Bochy said after the game. "Pitch count was up there. He was just off a little bit."

Dickey has been even more inconsistent. He is 1-1 with a 6.75 ERA in his three starts since facing the Giants. After his best effort of the season, a seven-inning stint against the Phillies in which he allowed one run and struck out a season-high eight batters, Dickey came back to allow eight runs in five innings against the Nationals. He gave up back-to-back homers in the first inning against Washington and was knocked out of the game without retiring a batter in the sixth.

"I made some really good pitches that inning and they just found some holes," Dickey said afterward. "And then I made a mistake and got punished."

In eight career starts against the Braves, Cueto is 2-3 with a 3.58 ERA. He has 43 strikeouts in 50 1/3 total innings against Atlanta. Dickey is 2-2 with a 3.79 ERA in six career starts against San Francisco, with 25 strikeouts in 40 1/3 innings

The series will match teams with pitching staffs that have struggled all season. The Braves (31-37) rank 11th in the National League in ERA (4.69), 12th in runs allowed, 11th in home runs allowed, and 15th in strikeouts. The Giants (26-45) are 10th in ERA (4.90), 10th in runs allowed, 15th in hits allowed and 10th in strikeouts.

This will be the second series between the teams this season. The Giants took two of three when the teams played in San Francisco May 26-28.

The Braves won two of three games in their series against the Miami Marlins last weekend, both wins coming in the last inning on walk-off singles by second baseman Brandon Phillips. The win put Atlanta into a second-place tie with the New York Mets in the N.L. East, 10 1/2 games behind Washington.

The Giants suffered a four-game sweep in Colorado and lost on Nolan Arenado's three-run homer in the ninth inning on Sunday by a 7-5 score. San Francisco has lost six straight and is in last place in the N.L. West, 19 1/2 games behind the Rockies.
