    • LEADING OFF: Twins and Indians in AL Central battle
      June 15, 2017

A look at what's happening all around the majors Friday:

      TESTING TWINS

Minnesota (34-29), atop the AL Central for the past five weeks, starts a four-game series against defending AL champion Cleveland (32-21), which trails by two games. ''We'd all be lying if we said we haven't been scoreboard watching since we got off to a 4-0 start,'' said Twins catcher Chris Gimenez, who played for the Indians last season. ''I think last year especially, Cleveland was kind of the bully on the block. We want to let people know that we're ready to kind of take the bully on and punch him in the mouth. This is a good opportunity to do that. Not that the season is over if it doesn't happen that way. But anytime you have the chance to play the guys right behind you and potentially create some separation there, it's a good thing.''

      HAMELS REHAB

Texas Rangers left-hander Cole Hamels, on the disabled list since May 2 because of a strained right oblique, is to start Friday for Double-A Frisco in an injury rehabilitation assignment. Hamels was 2-0 with a 3.03 ERA in five starts before he got hurt.

      LOOKING TO REBOUND

Chicago White Sox left-hander Jose Quintana was an All-Star last season and the subject of trade rumors all winter as his team retooled toward youth. Quintana is 2-8 with a 5.30 ERA, including 0-4 with a 6.51 ERA in his past seven starts, going into Friday's series opener at Toronto.

      ALREADY BOUNCED BACK

Right-hander Luis Severino, 5-2 with a 2.75 ERA, starts for the New York Yankees in the second game of a four-game series at Oakland after an extra day of rest. Severino is 3-0 with a 1.90 ERA over his past seven starts, allowing only five earned runs over 33 1/3 innings during his past five outings. Last year, he was 3-8 and got demoted to the minor leagues.

            • Friday's Diamond Notes
              June 16, 2017

Hottest team: Marlins (12-5 last 17) at Braves

Miami hasn’t even reached the 30-win mark on the season, but the Fish are swimming upstream after racking up 19 runs in a two-game sweep of the Athletics. The Marlins’ bats are coming alive by scoring at least six runs in six of the past seven contests, while posting a combined 25 runs during a three-game winning streak last week against the Cubs and Pirates.

The Marlins travel to Atlanta for a weekend set with the slugging Braves, who put up double-digit runs in all three games of their recent series with the Nationals. Miami is making its first trip to SunTrust Park as Dan Straily takes the mound in the opener. Straily is winless in his last two starts against Chicago and Pittsburgh, but the right-hander beat the Braves in his previous start back in April as a -130 home favorite.

Coldest team: Reds (0-6 last six) vs. Dodgers

Cincinnati finished off an impressive four-game sweep of St. Louis earlier this month, but that winning streak came to an abrupt halt in California. The Reds dropped all three games to the Dodgers last weekend, including blowing a late 7-3 lead in a 9-7 defeat in the series finale. Cincinnati followed that effort by dropping all three games at San Diego, while scoring a total of seven runs against the Padres.

The Reds face the Dodgers once again, but at least Cincinnati gets Los Angeles at Great American Ballpark this weekend. Cincinnati has won 13 of its last 19 games at home, while owning a 4-0 record in Tim Adleman’s last four starts at GABP, including recent victories over the Yankees and Rockies.

Hottest pitcher: Sean Manaea, Athletics (6-3, 3.67 ERA)

Since allowing four earned runs to the Angels in his season debut, Manaea has been dealing at the Coliseum by giving up two earned runs or fewer in each of his last four home outings. During this span, the Oakland southpaw has defeated Boston, Toronto, and Seattle at home, while not allowing a hit in five innings of work against Houston in mid-April. Manaea shoots for his second victory over the Yankees in less than three weeks after defeating New York as a +145 underdog in a 4-1 triumph on May 26.

Coldest pitcher: Patrick Corbin, Diamondbacks (5-6, 5.38 ERA)

Arizona is rolling by winning seven of its last eight contests, including a mini two-game sweep of Detroit. The D-backs head to Philadelphia to continue an eight-game road swing, but their coldest road pitcher takes the mound in the opener. Corbin is fresh off a 15-3 rout over the Padres in his last time out, but Arizona owns a dreadful 0-5 mark in his five starts away from Chase Field this season. To make matters worse, Corbin has been tagged for 21 runs in his last three road outings, while not lasting past the fifth inning in any of those appearances.

Biggest OVER run: Royals (6-0 last six)

Playing out west has woken up the Kansas City bats as the Royals have eclipsed the OVER in all six games on their current trip in California. Kansas City won its fifth straight contest on Thursday by blasting Los Angeles, 7-2, while putting up at least seven runs during each game of this current hot streak. The Royals go for their seventh straight win in Game 2 of a road series tonight with Ian Kennedy taking the hill. Kennedy is seeking his first victory of the season as the Royals are riding a 6-0-1 mark to the OVER in his last seven outings.

Biggest UNDER run: Mariners (6-2 last eight)

Following a pair of games that resembled football scores against the Twins, Seattle finished UNDER the total in each of its final two games at Minnesota. In the series finale on Thursday, the Twins dropped five runs in the first inning on the M’s, but scored only once the rest of the way as the two teams went UNDER on a 10 ½ total. The Mariners head to Texas for the weekend as James Paxton makes his first road start since late April. The Seattle southpaw owns a 2.60 ERA on the road, but the M’s have hit the OVER in two of his three starts away from Safeco Field.

Matchup to watch: Red Sox vs. Astros

Two teams that have World Series aspirations in the American League hook up for an intriguing weekend series at Minute Maid Park. The Astros still own a double-digit game lead over the Angels in the AL West in spite of dropping six of their past nine contests following an 11-game winning streak.

The Red Sox took three of four from the hapless Phillies in an interleague set, but have lost three of their previous four road series openers. Drew Pomeranz got knocked around early in his last outing against Detroit by giving up three early runs in an 8-3 defeat last Sunday night. The Red Sox southpaw is unbeaten in his last two road starts with victories over the White Sox and Yankees, while allowing only two earned runs in the past 12 innings on the highway.

Mike Fiers counters for Houston, as the Astros are a perfect 4-0 in his last four starts. Fiers is coming off his best outing of the season by tossing 7.1 innings of two-hit ball in a 3-1 home victory over the Angels last Saturday. The Astros own a sterling 12-3 record this season in series openers coming off a win, while looking to avenge a 2-5 mark against the Red Sox from last season.

Betcha didn’t know: The Orioles return home from a disastrous 1-7 road swing to host the Cardinals in interleague play. Right-hander Kevin Gausman takes the mound for Baltimore in the opener as he is making his 15th start. The home/road splits are astounding for Gausman as the O’s are 6-1 in his seven starts at Camden Yards, but just 1-6 on the highway.

Biggest public favorite: Dodgers (-180) at Reds

Biggest public underdog: Marlins (+100) at Braves

Biggest line move: Mariners (-122 to -140) at Rangers

                    June 16, 2017

NEW YORK (AP) Max Scherzer struck out 10 over eight masterful innings to reach double digits for the fifth straight start and limited the Mets to four hits, leading the Washington Nationals over New York 7-2 on Friday night.

Matt Wieters and Michael A. Taylor hit consecutive homers starting the third inning against Steven Matz (1-1). Anthony Rendon added a two-run homer in the sixth and had three RBIs, Bryce Harper finished with three hits, including a run-scoring single in the eighth, as the Nationals improved to 5-0 at Citi Field this year.

Scherzer (8-4) won for the fourth time in five starts, starting 26 of 29 batters with strikes. He never threw more than 16 pitches in an inning until the eighth, ending that one by fanning Yoenis Cespedes in an 11-pitch at-bat. Scherzer walked two and threw 118 pitches, his most since May 11 last year.

                    DODGERS 3, REDS 1

CINCINNATI (AP) - Left-hander Alex Wood remained unbeaten by pitching four-hit ball over eight innings as the Los Angeles Dodgers extended their domination of Cincinnati.

Wood (7-0) lost his shutout when Devin Mesoraco homered in the eighth. He's the first Dodgers pitcher to get so deep into a season without a loss since 1985, when Orel Hershiser made his first 11 starts without a loss, according to STATS.

Kenley Jansen gave up a double in the ninth while picking up his 14th save, and Tim Adleman (4-3) took the loss.

                    CARDINALS 11, ORIOLES 2

BALTIMORE (AP) - Carlos Martinez struck out eight over six sharp innings, and the St. Louis Cardinals hit a season-high five home runs in a rout of struggling Baltimore.

Rookie Paul DeJong homered, singled twice, scored three runs and had three RBIs to help St. Louis snap a three-game skid.

Coming off a four-hit shutout against Philadelphia, Martinez (6-5) gave up one run and four hits. The right-hander has 45 strikeouts over his last five starts.

Kevin Gausman (3-6) allowed five runs in 5 2/3 innings.

WHITE SOX 11, BLUE JAYS 4

TORONTO (AP) - Melky Cabrera homered, doubled and drove in five runs against his former team, leading Jose Quintana and the Chicago White Sox over Toronto.

Cabrera connected for his seventh homer, a three-run drive in the fifth inning that made it 11-2. Cabrera scored three times as the White Sox went to win for the fifth time in seven games.

Jose Quintana (3-8) snapped a four-game losing streak with his first win since May 2.

Joe Biagini (1-6) lasted just 33 pitches, getting yanked with no outs in the second.

                    TIGERS 13, RAYS 4

DETROIT (AP) - Nicholas Castellanos doubled, tripled and drove in four runs as the Detroit Tigers routed Tampa Bay.

Justin Upton drove in three runs for the Tigers, while Ian Kinsler and Alex Avila homered.

Daniel Norris (4-4) gave up three runs in six-plus innings. He matched a season high with eight strikeouts.

Erasmo Ramirez (3-2) matched a career worst by allowing 10 runs on nine hits and two walks in 4 2/3 innings.

                    MARLINS 5, BRAVES 0

ATLANTA (AP) - Dan Straily pitched into the seventh inning, Christian Yelich drove in three runs and the Miami Marlins beat Atlanta.

Dee Gordon went 3 for 5 and Justin Bour homered in his first game back from the disabled list as the Marlins moved into second place in the NL East, 10 games behind Washington. Miami has won 13 of 18.

Straily (5-4) was coming off his second-shortest outing of the season, but he kept the Braves guessing most of the night, allowing just four hits and striking out eight in 6 1/3 innings.

Sean Newcomb (0-2) gave up three runs, five hits and three walks in six innings.

                    DIAMONDBACKS 5, PHILLIES 4

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Gregor Blanco hit a tying two-run homer and Jake Lamb drove in the go-ahead run with a sacrifice fly in the seventh inning to rally the Arizona Diamondbacks over Philadelphia.

David Peralta tripled among his three hits, including a single that followed Blanco's second homer of the season off Aaron Nola (3-5) in the seventh. Peralta advanced to third on Paul Goldschmidt's single off Pat Neshek and scored on Lamb's fly.

Patrick Corbin (6-6) gave up four runs - two earned - and five hits while striking out five in six innings to get the win. Fernando Rodney got his 19th save.

                    CUBS 9, PIRATES 5

PITTSBURGH (AP) - Anthony Rizzo almost led off his third straight game with a homer, losing his bid on a replay reversal, before helping key a six-run rally in the ninth inning that sent the Chicago Cubs over Pittsburgh.

The Cubs won for just the third time in nine games. Manager Joe Maddon wasn't around to see the comeback - he was ejected in the first inning after Rizzo's drive into the Allegheny River was ruled a foul ball.

Chicago trailed 4-3 until Jason Heyward and Willson Contreras began the ninth with doubles off Juan Nicasio (1-3) to tie it.

Koji Uehera (2-3) got the win.

                    INDIANS 8, TWINS 1

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) - Carlos Carrasco pitched one-hit ball into the sixth inning, Jose Ramirez had three hits and Edwin Encarnacion homered as the Cleveland Indians beat pitching-thin Minnesota.

Carrasco (7-2) gave up four hits in 6 1/3 innings, with three walks and seven strikeouts.

The Indians pulled a game behind the Twins at the top of the AL Central standings. Minnesota has had at least a share of first place since May 11.

Nik Turley (0-1), a 27-year-old journeyman making his second major league appearance, took the loss.

                    RANGERS 10, MARINERS 4

ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) - Tyson Ross allowed just a pair of runs in his first start in 14 months and Carlos Gomez homered to help the Texas Rangers beat Seattle.

Ross (1-0) made his Rangers debut and started for the first time since opening day last year when he pitched for the Padres. He had been sidelined with Thoracic Outlet Syndrome and picked up his first win since Aug. 31, 2015. He struck out five in 5 2/3 innings.

Seattle starter James Paxton (5-2) allowed seven hits and seven runs in 3 2/3 innings.

                    RED SOX 2, ASTROS 1

HOUSTON (AP) - Mookie Betts hit a tiebreaking home run in the eighth inning, sending the Boston Red Sox over Houston.

Joe Kelly (3-0) got two outs for the win, while Craig Kimbrel threw a perfect ninth for his 19th save.

                    BREWERS 6, PADRES 5, 10 INNINGS

MILWAUKEE (AP) - Eric Thames hit the Brewers' first walk-off home run of the season in the bottom of the 10th inning, lifting Milwaukee to a victory over the San Diego Padres.

Thames hit his 19th home run of the season when he drove a 1-1 pitch from Ryan Butcher (3-3) off the top of the left-field fence. The ball bounced off the yellow padding and into the Brewers' bullpen, setting off a raucous celebration at home plate.

Jared Hughes (3-1) retired the side in order in the top of the 10th, helping the Brewers match their season-best four-game winning streak for the third time.

                    • Saturday’s Den: Pac-12 football trends…….

Taking a look at some trends involving Pac-12 football teams…….

USC scored 45+ points in three of its last four bowls, last three of which were decided by a total of 8 points. Underdogs covered 4 of their last 5 bowls. Since 2011, Trojans are 23-12 as home favorites.

UCLA is 2-8-1 vs spread in its last 11 non-conference games; they’re 0-4 vs spread in last four games as a home underdog.

Utah won its last four bowls; Kyle Whittingham is 10-1 in bowls. Utes are 28-11 the last three years, with a +24 turnover ratio- they covered eight of last ten as a road underdog. That said, Utah has only nine starters back this year and could regress some.

Last year, Colorado played in its first bowl since 2007; their last bowl win was in ’04. Under coach MacIntyre, Buffaloes are 10-2 as a home favorite.

Arizona State is 11-14 the last two years; they didn’t go to a bowl LY. ASU is 2-3 in its last five bowls, with average total of 76.4 in those games. Sun Devils are 17-9 as home favorites, 5-10 as road underdogs under Todd Graham.

Arizona has 14 starters back this year its offensive line has 89 returning starts. Wildcats are 3-1 in bowls under RichRod, scoring 41.5 pts/game, but were favored in all four games (1-3 vs spread). Arizona is 5-13 vs spread as a road dog under RichRod.

Washington is 27-14 under Petersen, with a +36 turnover ratio- they were +18 LY. Huskies are 6-3 in last nine games as a road favorite- their OL has 97 returning starts this season.

Since 2010, Stanford is 76-18; they won their last three bowls. Cardinal is 7-2-1 vs spread as an underdog in the Shaw era. All that, and they’re -2 in turnovers the last four years. Unusual for a team to win that much without a really good turnover ratio.

Oregon has 17 starters back and a new coach; from 2012-14, they were +55 in turnovers, but were +5/-3 last two years. Ducks are 3-10 vs spread in last 13 home games, 3-8-1 in last dozen non-league games. Oregon is 12-7-1 vs spread in last 20 road games.

Washington State has improved dramatically under Mike Leach, but they started last two years by losing to a I-AA team. Since 2013, Coogs are 14-4 as road underdogs, 10-6 as home favorites. Senior QB Falk has 28 starts under his belt.

Oregon State is 0-11 on road (5-6 vs spread) under Anderson; they have 15 starters back, should be much-improved. Since 2013, Beavers are 4-9 vs spread in non-league games.

Cal Bears have #110 experience team this year, with a new coach; they’re 7-2-1 vs spread in last 10 non-league games, but since ’07, they’re 5-15 as a road favorite. Cal’s coordinators were both head coaches LY, one at I-AA Eastern Washington, the other at Fresno State.

                      • LEADING OFF: Surging Moustakas on pace for career season
                        June 16, 2017

A look at what's happening all around the majors Saturday:

                        MIGHTY MOOSE

As Kansas City's once-anemic offense has surged, scoring seven or more runs in each of its last five games entering the weekend, so has Royals third baseman Mike Moustakas. The left-handed hitter, who is a free agent after this season, entered a weekend series with the Los Angeles Angels hitting .400 (20 of 50) with five home runs and 16 RBIs in June. Moustakas already has 18 home runs for the season, four away from his career-high of 22 set during Kansas City's World Series championship season of 2015, and his 42 RBIs put him well on pace to top his career-best of 82.

                        POOR PORCELLO

Red Sox right-hander Rick Porcello allowed four or more runs in a start eight times all of last season on his way to winning the AL Cy Young Award. He's already done it seven times in 14 starts this year, a troubling trend he hopes to end when Boston visits the Astros, who have the best record in the majors. After finishing 22-4 with a 3.15 ERA last season, Porcello enters this outing at Houston with a 3-8 record and a 4.67 ERA - including an ERA of 6.38 in three starts in June so far.

                        MR. ANDERSON

The Milwaukee Brewers lead the NL Central, thanks in part to the emergence of lefty Chase Anderson as nothing short of an ace. Anderson, fifth in the league with a 2.83 ERA, has been particularly effective in his three starts in June so far, allowing only one run in 20 2/3 innings. He'll next start at Miller Park vs. the Padres.

                        TANKED TANAKA

The next chapter in Masahiro Tanaka's mysterious season will take place when the struggling right-hander starts for the Yankees at Oakland. Tanaka, whose highest ERA for a season since joining the major leagues in 2014 was 3.51 two years ago, enters this game with a 6.07 ERA through 13 starts this season. The Japanese hurler has already faced the A's once this season, allowing one run in 7 1/3 innings in New York's 4-1 loss to the A's on May 26.

                        CHECK HIM

The Braves will see how star outfielder Matt Kemp is feeling as he deals with a sore left hamstring. He didn't start Friday night against Miami, and Atlanta manager Brian Snitker says the team will wait a couple of days before reassessing Kemp's condition. Kemp is hitting .327 and leads the Braves with 32 RBIs despite missing nine games in April with a sore right hamstring.

                        • MLB notebook: Tigers' Martinez ailing with irregular heartbeat
                          June 16, 2017

Detroit Tigers cleanup hitter and designated hitter Victor Martinez was placed on the 10-day disabled list Friday after spending the night in the hospital for observation of an irregular heartbeat.

Detroit called up catcher/first baseman John Hicks from the Triple-A Toledo Mud Hens for the third time this season to replace Martinez on the roster.

Martinez was removed from Thursday night's 5-3 win over Tampa Bay after reaching first base on a run-scoring two-out error by Rays shortstop Daniel Robertson in the seventh inning.

"I didn't find out about it until he came out of the game," manager Brad Ausmus said. "He was kind of playing through it. Probably my first thought was that maybe it was dehydration. I'm not sure the doctors even know what caused it. I think after his second at-bat is when he mentioned it to (head trainer) Kevin Rand."

--The Cincinnati Reds will dedicate a bronze statue of all-time hits leader Pete Rose on Saturday.

Rose will join team statues of Joe Nuxhall, Frank Robinson, Ernie Lombardi, Ted Kluszewski, Johnny Bench, Joe Morgan and Tony Perez.

Former Big Red Machine teammates scheduled to appear include Bench, Morgan, Perez, Jack Billingham, Dave Concepcion, Doug Flynn, George Foster and Ken Griffey Sr., the Reds announced.

The ceremony will take place Saturday afternoon outside the main gates at Great American Ball Park. The sculpture captures Rose -- nicknamed Charlie Hustle -- in a headfirst slide.

--The Toronto Blue Jays put utility man Chris Coghlan on the 10-day disabled list with a contusion to his left wrist.

The move made room for the return of infielder-outfielder Steve Pearce from the disabled list, where he had been since May 15 with a strained right calf. Pearce started in left field for the game against the Chicago White Sox Friday.

Pearce completed a rehabilitation assignment at Double-A New Hampshire and Triple-A Buffalo, going 2-for-22 (.091). He was batting .205 with four homers and 10 RBIs in 27 games before he went on the DL.

Coghlan was batting .200 with one homer and five RBIs in 36 games.
