    Monday’s List of 13: Wrapping up a sports weekend…….

    13) The 2017 Golden State Warriors are competing against the 2017 Cavaliers, not the 1970 Knicks or the ’85 Lakers or Jordan’s Bulls or Russell’s Celtics. They’re trying to win this year’s championship, and thats it, no matter what bored people rant about on social media.

They’re trying to win THIS YEAR’s CHAMPIONSHIP, thats it. Fans always think when their team wins it is the greatest thing ever, because for them, it was. For me, Super Bowl XXXIV is the greatest football game ever played. Most people would disagree with that, but thats the beauty of sports/discussion, we all have our opinions.

    12) The hotel in Oakland that the Warriors practice in is hosting the National Cannabis Business Summit & Expo, starting Monday. Insert your own joke here.

    11) On the Marlins game Saturday, they were discussing whether or not it is a good idea for every team to be represented at the All-Star Game.

I rooted for the 1979 A’s, a truly dreadful (54-108) team that was just a bad team, other than a very young Rickey Henderson, Dwayne Murphy and a couple decent pitchers.

One of the few highlights that season was when Jeff Newman was introduced before the All-Star Game in Seattle, as the A’s only representative. It was like, “Yeah, we suck but we have nice uniforms.”

So I’m in favor of each team being represented.

    10) Saturday, 17 people (11 adults, six kids) were pelted with goose droppings at Disneyland in Anaheim. Actual geese did the damage from up above. Thats the definition of a crappy day.

    9) Texas Tech signed a 19-year old Italian guard as a recruit to join the Red Raiders this fall. Davide Moretti scored 14.8 pts/game for the Italian team in the U18 World Championships.

Recruiting is so damn competitive now, teams look for players wherever you can find them. I’m guessing it is a very long journey from Italy to Lubbock, TX.

    8) 2020 Olympics will have 3-on-3 basketball, but sounds like it will be without NBA players.

    7) Damien Jefferson is transferring from New Mexico’s basketball program, the sixth Lobo to transfer since last season ended.

    6) Random update: Tim Tebow is hitting .223 in the Class A South Atlantic League.

    5) Georgia Tech’s punter is giving up his last year of college football in order to study at a seminary— he is going to become a priest.

    4) How small market teams try to do things (for better or worse, mostly worse):

November 5, 2009, the A’s got Matt Holliday from Colorado for Carlos Gonzalez, Greg Smith and Huston Street. Smith was a lefty pitcher, Street is obviously still a (oft-injured) closer and CarGo is a fine player for the Rockies.

Holliday played 93 games for Oakland, then on July 24, he was traded to St Louis, for Clayton Mortenson (P), Shane Peterson (OF) and Brett Wallace (DH-type). Not good.

Holliday was a free agent after 2010, which is why the deals were made in the first place. He re-signed with the Cardinals.

You can hire all the Ivy League geniuses you want in the front office, but that Ivy League degree looks a lot less glossy when you screw things up this badly. I’d go over the Cespedes and Josh Donaldson trades, but I don’t want to puke on my laptop.

Oakland’s record since the Cespedes trade on July 31, 2014: 186-255. I’ll stop now.

    3) In the interest of fairness, A’s did same thing with Ben Zobrist, who was with Oakland for less than one season, before they dealt him to the Royals on July 28, for two minor league pitchers, one of which was Sean Manaea, who has great promise.

So if you replenish your young pitching, it can be worth it; if you don’t, its a freaking disaster.

    2) Major league baseball amateur draft is Monday; think it is 40 rounds now over a couple days. Baseball is different than other sports in that these kids get drafted, then disappear into the minor leagues before some of them resurface in the majors a couple years from now

    1) It never gets old when a kid makes his major league debut, and they show his family in the stands; the mom is usually crying, the dad is trying to act cool and everyone else in the group is going crazy rooting for the kid. It is the culmination of many years of effort; what a feeling that must be.

Minnesota Twins have the #1 pick; they’re in first place now. Last team to draft first while they were in first place? The 2001 Twins, when they drafted Joe Mauer.

    • LEADING OFF: Draft Day, Judge takes power show to Anaheim
      June 11, 2017

A look at what's happening around the majors Monday:

      DRAFT DAY

The Major League Baseball draft begins at 7 p.m. EDT, and covers 40 rounds over three days. The AL Central-leading Minnesota Twins have the first pick because of their majors-worst 103 losses last year. The previous time the Twins had the overall No. 1 choice was 2001, when they took high school catcher Joe Mauer. This time, top prospects include California high school pitcher/shortstop Hunter Greene, Vanderbilt right-hander Kyle Wright and Louisville first baseman/left-hander Brendan McKay. After the Twins, the following four picks belong to Cincinnati, San Diego, Tampa Bay and Atlanta.

      NOW PLAYING

Yankees rookie Aaron Judge next takes his longball act to Anaheim, where the 6-foot-7 slugger will try to build his already impressive numbers. Judge leads the majors with 21 home runs and tops the American League with 47 RBIs and a .344 batting average. He put on quite a power show Sunday in New York by hitting two more homers, including a drive estimated at 495 feet that was the longest in the big leagues this year. The AL East-leading Yankees have won five in a row.

      WELCOME BACK

Pirates right-hander Jameson Taillon will make his first start since undergoing surgery to treat testicular cancer May 8 when he takes on the NL West-leading Rockies at PNC Park. Taillon is 2-1 with a 3.31 ERA in six starts this year.

      LET'S SEE

Beset by injuries the whole season but getting healthy in a hurry, the New York Mets begin a key stretch that could be make or break for their year. Now with slugger Yoenis Cespedes in the lineup and Steven Matz and Seth Lugo back in the rotation, the Mets play 14 straight games against teams that made the playoffs last year. At 28-33, they open with Jacob deGrom starting vs. the Cubs, then later play the Nationals, Dodgers and Giants.

      CHECK HIM

Orioles star third baseman Manny Machado has missed four straight games - all losses - because of an injured left wrist. He was available to pinch hit Sunday, but didn't play. There's a chance he could start when Baltimore takes on the White Sox in Chicago. The O's need him to get going - he's hitting just .213, with 12 home runs and 27 RBIs.

      • MLB notebook: Nationals closer Glover placed on disabled list
        June 11, 2017

The Washington Nationals placed right-handed closer Koda Glover on the 10-day disabled list Sunday with lower back stiffness caused while showering.

The team also reinstated right-handed reliever Joe Blanton from the 10-day disabled list.

Glover, 24, said he felt his back lock up on him while showering before Saturday's game against the Texas Rangers.

Glover admitted he did not notify manager Dusty Baker or the training staff about the injury until after he surrendered three hits and two runs in the ninth as the Rangers tied the game and forced extra innings. It was his first blown save since taking over as the Nationals' closer last month.

Glover leads all major league rookies with eight saves. He is 0-1 with a 5.12 ERA in 23 games this season.

--Nationals right-handed starter Max Scherzer got the 2,000th strikeout of his career when he fanned Nomar Mazara of the Texas Rangers to lead off the fourth inning on Sunday at Nationals Park.

Scherzer is the third-fastest to reach that mark in terms of innings, only behind Pedro Martinez and Randy Johnson.

--Nationals first baseman Ryan Zimmerman was not in the starting lineup against the Texas Rangers, as the leading hitter in the majors is dealing with back issues.

It is the third time in four games that Zimmerman, 32, has not been in the starting lineup.

Zimmerman, a University of Virginia product, entered Sunday leading the majors with a .365 average and was tied for third with 17 homers and was second in slugging at .697.

--The Seattle Mariners activated outfielder Mitch Haniger from the disabled list and optioned outfielder Boog Powell to Triple-A Tacoma.

Haniger missed six-plus weeks with an oblique injury after enjoying a superb start. He was batting .338 with four homers and 16 RBIs in 21 games prior to the injury.

--The Philadelphia Phillies placed second baseman Cesar Hernandez on the 10-day disabled list with a left oblique strain.

They activated right-handed reliever Joaquin Benoit from the DL in a corresponding roster move.

Hernandez, 27, suffered the injury while making a throw in Friday night's loss at Busch Stadium against the Cardinals. He is batting .277 with five home runs and a team-leading 40 runs scored as the Phillies' leadoff hitter this season.

Benoit, 39, was on the disabled list with a knee injury. He has a 1-2 record with 3.68 ERA and one save in 23 appearances.

                • Monday's Diamond Notes
                  June 12, 2017

Hottest team: Rockies (7-1 past eight games)

The Rockies were unable to cap off a four-game road series sweep against the defending champion Cubs on Sunday, but they did put up a good fight in the 7-5 setback against Jake Arrieta. The loss snapped a seven-game win streak, including five in a row against both of the team's that played in last season's World Series. The Rockies hand left-hander Kyle Freeland the ball as they continue their road trip in Pittsburgh on Monday. Road has been a good place for Freeland and the Rockies, as they're 6-0 over his past six outings away from home. The Rockies are also 4-0 in his past four starts to kick off a new series while going 8-2 over his past 10 outings overall.

Coldest team Orioles (0-4 past four games, 2-6 past eight overall)

The Orioles have to be glad they're out of the Bronx, as they were absolutely tattooed by the first-place Yankees over the weekend. Baltimore was outscored 38-8 during the three-game sweep, much to the dismay of their fans. 'Over' bettors enjoyed it, however, but that's another story. Perhaps a trip to Chicago is just what the doctor ordered for Baltimore, as they swept the White Sox in the most recent series between the teams back on May 5-7. It was Baltimore doing the outscoring then, besting the White Sox 4-2, 6-5 and 4-0. The landscape is a lot different for the O's these days, however, and they're just 3-13 in their past 16 road games against a right-handed starter while going a dismal 7-19 in their past 26 road games overall.

Hottest pitcher: Stephen Strasburg, Nationals (7-2, 2.80 ERA)

Strasburg looks to keep the Nationals rolling along. He was a hard-luck loser last time out, allowing two runs - one earned - and just three hits over six innings in a loss at L.A. Dodgers on Wednesday in a showdown with Clayton Kershaw. Despite the loss he has five consecutive quality starts, going 4-1 with a 2.14 ERA while striking out 41 batters over 27 2/3 innings across his past four showings. The Braves had proven to offer little resistance to Strasburg, as he is 2-0 with a 2.45 ERA over two outings with three walks and 21 strikeouts across 14 2/3 innings this season. Atlanta is hitting just .204 against him this season. In fact, Atlanta is just 3-23 in their past 26 trips overall to D.C., and the Braves are a dismal 1-8 in their past nine tries when Strasburg is on the hill.

Coldest pitcher: Masahiro Tanaka, Yankees (5-6, 6.55 ERA)

Boston Red Sox television commentator Jerry Remy drew plenty of fire on his comments that Tanaka shouldn't be allowed to have his translator come to the mound. The way Tanaka has been pitching, he probably doesn't want to understand all of the comments and jeers from the Yankees faithful. Tanaka has lost five straight starts, posting a dismal 10.72 ERA during the losing streak. On Monday he'll take his show on the road, and he has been even worse there. He is 2-3 with a 7.24 ERA over six outings on the road this season with a .328 opponent batting average. He has also walked 12 and struck out just 25 across 32 1/3 innings away from home.

Biggest UNDER run: Mets (5-0 past five games, 8-4-1 past 13 overall)

The 'under' has cashed in five consecutive for the Mets. They allowed just one run in each of their three games at SunTrust Park in Atlanta to help 'under' bettors cash tickets. That streak will be put to the test with Jacob deGrom on the hill, as the 'over' is 6-1-1 over his past eight outings. The under is 3-1-1 over his past five home outings, however, while the under is 5-0 in his past five against teams with a losing overall mark. The Cubs have been cooperating for under bettors lately, cashing in six of the past seven road games while going 12-2 in their past 14 against a right-handed starter. The under is also 12-4 in Chicago's past 16 games overall.

Biggest OVER run: Padres (6-0 past six games, 8-1 past nine overall)

The 'over' has been connecting on a frequent basis for San Diego lately, hitting in each of their three games against Kansas City over the weekend, and the previous three in Arizona. The over run is mostly due to their awful pitching, allowing an average of 8.5 runs per game over the past eight outings, including four games with 10 or more runs allowed. The over is also 5-2 over Luis Perdomo's past seven home outings while cashing in four of their past five games at Petco Park overall.

Matchup to watch: Angels vs. Yankees

The Angels welcome the red-hot Yankees to town. New York is looking to maintain its grip on first place in the ultra-competitive American League East while the Halos are simply trying to win to get back to .500. New York has won five in a row while going 4-0 over their past four games against a right-handed starter. While the Yankees are 21-5 over Tanaka's past 26 starts against a team with a losing record, they're 8-0 in his past eight road outings against a team with a losing overall record. New York has dropped each of his past five outings, however, and rest hasn't done him very good. The Yankees are 0-4 over his past four starts with five days of rest. The Angels are just 2-5 in Alex Meyer's past seven starts, but they're 5-0 in his past five with four days of rest.

Betcha didn’t know: As mentioned above, the Orioles were punished over the weekend in New York and it seems like they've had an extended losing streak. However, they're still one game over .500. They were missing Manny Machado over the weekend after he was spiked on the hand inadvertently by Andrew McCutchen on a slide into third base last week. He is hopeful of playing in Monday's series opener in Chicago, and that's good news for the O's flagging offense. The O's will face a tough task of trying to take down Mike Pelfrey, as he has a 1.69 ERA over his psat four outings while limiting the opposition to a .225 batting average.

Biggest public favorite: Nationals (-245) vs. Braves

Biggest public underdog: Rockies (+140) at Pirates

Biggest line move: Pirates (-120 to -140) vs. Rockies

                    • Twins in first place as big draft night arrives
                      June 12, 2017

The No. 1 pick in Major League Baseball's draft belongs to the Minnesota Twins - who don't exactly look like a rebuilding project these days.

After losing 103 games last year, the Twins (32-27) are leading the AL Central heading into Monday night's draft. Although there's a long way to go before Minnesota can start making playoff plans, the Twins at least have a shot at accomplishing a rare feat.

Since the draft started in 1965, only one team has had the No. 1 pick and made the postseason in the same year. That was Tampa Bay in 2008, when the Rays went all the way to the World Series.

That postseason run came after Tampa Bay picked first overall in two straight drafts, taking David Price in 2007 and Tim Beckham in 2008. Price actually contributed out of the bullpen during that '08 postseason, earning the save in Game 7 of the AL Championship Series against Boston.

Before the Rays, the 1995 Angels came achingly close to a playoff appearance in the same year they picked Darin Erstad at No. 1. They lost to Seattle in a one-game playoff for the AL West title.

Then there were the 1989 Baltimore Orioles, who picked No. 1 in the draft after losing 107 games the previous season. The Orioles shocked everyone by taking the AL East race all the way down to the final series in Toronto before eventually finishing two games behind the Blue Jays.

Baltimore drafted Ben McDonald with the top pick that year, and the tall right-hander actually made it to the majors that season, pitching six times in relief for the Orioles down the stretch.

It could be a while before Minnesota's top pick makes an impact in the big leagues, but the draft may not be the only highlight of 2017 for the Twins.

Here are a few other developments from around baseball:

                      CAN YOU TOP THIS?

Craig Kimbrel of the Red Sox and Kenley Jansen of the Dodgers are having quite the cross-country duel to see which closer can put up the most eye-popping statistics. Kimbrel has 55 strikeouts and five walks in 27 2/3 innings, and opponents are batting .086 against him. Jansen, meanwhile, has 43 strikeouts in 26 1/3 innings, and he hasn't walked anybody all year.

                      HIGHLIGHTS OF THE WEEK

Aaron Judge of the New York Yankees leads all three Triple Crown categories in the American League with a .345 average, 21 home runs and 47 RBIs. If there's a such thing as the Statcast Triple Crown - and really, why not? - Judge is a contender for that too.

Judge's 495-foot home run Sunday is the longest so far this season. The day before, he hit a homer with an exit velocity of 121.1 mph , also the best in baseball in 2017. The one category he isn't leading in is average exit velocity, where Miguel Sano of Minnesota is setting the pace at 98.4 mph. Judge is second at 96.8.

                      LINE OF THE WEEK

The line of the year, in all likelihood. Scooter Gennett became the 17th player in major league history to hit four home runs in a game Tuesday night, when he led Cincinnati to a 13-1 win over St. Louis. He had 38 career homers going into the game.

                        June 12, 2017

NEW YORK (AP) Brendan McKay's fastball-firing left arm has made him the possible No. 1 overall pick in the Major League Baseball draft.

Thing is, so has the Louisville slugger's bat.

The Cardinals star is one of college baseball's greatest two-way players, a rare talent who has given big league ballclubs a tough question to consider: Do they take McKay as a pitcher, hitter - or both?

''That remains to be seen, whether or not someone can do that,'' said Minnesota Twins chief baseball officer Derek Falvey, whose team picks first in the draft that starts Monday night. ''I'm not necessarily saying it's impossible, but the amount of time, if you talk to any of these guys, that they put in on either the hitting side or the pitching side, to double that, no one's figured out a way to make more than 24 hours in a day.

''If someone figures that out, maybe we'll have an opportunity, but it's a challenge.''

With McKay, though, a team might be willing to find out. He won his third straight John Olerud Two-Way Player award on Monday after hitting .343 with 17 home runs and 56 RBIs for the College World Series-bound Cardinals. He's also 10-3 with a 2.34 ERA on the mound.

Two-way players in high school and college aren't uncommon in the draft, with Olerud, Dave Winfield, Ken Brett, Jason Jennings and A.J. Reed among the big names whom major league teams had to make a call on. But this year's draft class has a handful expected to be selected early.

In addition to McKay, California high school shortstop and right-handed pitcher Hunter Greene has piqued lots of interest from teams picking early, including the Twins.

''There are a lot of two-way players in every draft, but for 2017, a number of first-round talents have significant experience as two-way players,'' said Atlanta Braves general manager John Coppolella, whose team picks No. 5 overall. ''There may come a day where there is a true impact two-way player, but until that day, you just choose one outcome and know the other possibility looms if failure occurs.''

Kentucky high school outfielder Jordon Adell, Texas high school right-hander Shane Baz and Virginia outfielder Adam Haseley are others who have pulled double-duty on the diamond and are expected to be first-rounders.

''The talents of the players and how things play out, you try to be as open-minded as you can,'' said Tampa Bay Rays GM Erik Neander, whose team picks fourth overall. ''I think the history of the professional game and what it looks like, we're certainly cognizant of the perspective of going one direction or the other. But it's quite an accomplishment to do it at the collegiate level.''

Here are some other things to know about the draft:

WHEN? WHERE?: Starts Monday at 7 p.m. EDT and continues for 40 rounds over three days, with the first two rounds at MLB Network's studios in Secaucus, New Jersey. Rounds 3-10 will be held Tuesday, and rounds 11-40 Wednesday - both days via team conference calls. Teams pick in reverse order of finish from the overall standings from last season.

                        FIRST PICK:
The Twins have the No. 1 overall pick for the third time, and first since taking Minnesota high school catcher Joe Mauer in 2001.

OTHER NAMES TO KNOW: Vanderbilt right-hander Kyle Wright, North Carolina high school lefty MacKenzie Gore, California high school shortstop/outfielder Royce Lewis and North Carolina high school outfielder Austin Beck.

SHOWING UP: Four top prospects are expected to be at the draft site, where they'll shake hands with MLB Commissioner Rob Manfred and slip on their new team's cap and jersey: Greene, Adell, New Mexico high school left-hander Trevor Rogers and Alabama high school outfielder Bubba Thompson.

WHO ELSE IS THERE?: Each of baseball's 30 teams has a former player and/or current member of its front office representing them at the draft. Among those scheduled to attend are Hall of Famer George Brett (Kansas City Royals), 1973 NL Rookie of the Year Gary Matthews (Philadelphia Phillies), 1976 NL Cy Young winner Randy Jones (San Diego Padres), 1983 AL Rookie of the Year Ron Kittle (Chicago White Sox) and former All-Stars such as Bob Boone (Washington Nationals) and Ron Cey (Los Angeles Dodgers). Lloyd Moseby, the No. 2 overall pick by the Toronto Blue Jays in 1978, and Jeffrey Hammonds, No. 4 overall in 1992 by the Baltimore Orioles, are also expected to be there.

EARLY ACTION: Toronto (22nd and 28th), the Texas Rangers (26th and 29th) and the Chicago Cubs (27th and 30th) each have two first-round selections, including compensatory picks. Houston and Pittsburgh both have four picks in the first 75 selections. For the Pirates, that includes No. 42 overall, which they received after failing to come to terms with lefty Nick Lodolo, the No. 41 pick who chose to attend Texas Christian instead of signing.

QUIET CARDINALS: St. Louis won't pick until the third round on Tuesday. The Cardinals had to give their first-round selection to the Cubs for signing free agent Dexter Fowler, and forfeited their next two picks (Nos. 56 and 75) - along with $2 million - to Houston after MLB completed its investigation into a data breach of the Astros' baseball operations database by a former St. Louis employee.

                          • Armadillo: Tuesday's six-pack

                            — Minnesota Twins took Royce Lewis with the #1 pick in the draft; he is listed as a shortstop but because he is a great athlete, could be moved to the outfield.

                            — WR Jeremy Maclin signed a 2-year deal with the Ravens, spurning the Bills/Eagles.

                            — Chargers’ LT King Dunlap retired after nine years with the team.

                            — Thoughts/prayers to Red Sox TV guy Jerry Remy, whose cancer has returned. Remy was on the air last night; we wish him well.

                            — Jim Boeheim’s son Buddy is a rising player on the AAU circuit; very good shooter who may go to prep school instead playing his senior year at Jamesville-DeWitt HS.

                            — Of the first round picks in the baseball draft, 18 were college kids, 12 were HS players.

                            **********

Armadillo: Tuesday's List of 13: Nobody asked me, but……..

                            13) Obscure Fact of the Day: On January 3, 2013, Nick Swisher signed with the Indians as a free agent, leaving New York (AL). As a result of that, New York got a compensatory draft pick.

With that compensatory pick, New York drafted Aaron Judge.

                            12) Michael Jordan played on the 1984 Olympic team; a pair of sneakers he wore then sold recently for $190,373 at an auction.

They were Converse All-Stars, not Nikes.

                            11) Golden State 129, Cleveland 120— Basketball season is over until next month, when the NBA has its summer league in Las Vegas- there is a smaller tournament in Orlando, too.

In the NBA Finals, Cleveland Cavaliers were -6 in 212:00 with Lebron James in the game, -22 in 28:00 with Lebron on the bench.

                            10) Josh Rawitch comes up with our Stat of the Day: Arizona catcher Chris Herrmann has homered in 17 big league games and his team won 17 all of them.

                            9) Red Sox relief pitchers have their high school pictures on wall of the Fenway bullpen dugout and they have to sit in front of where their picture is, like a seating chart.

                            8) Pittsburgh Penguins are first team since ’98 Detroit Red Wings to repeat as Stanley Cup champs; congrats to them.

                            7) Astros put Lance McCullers on the DL, meaning their two best starters are on the shelf; luckily for them, they have a huge lead in the AL West. Could be lot of “over” games involving the Astros coming up.

                            6) Butler hired Milwaukee coach LaVall Jordan as its new hoop coach; this job is a little different, since their AD is Barry Collier, who was himself the Bulldogs’ basketball coach from 1989-2000.

This is like the football job at Wisconsin, where former head coach Barry Alvarez is now the AD. Makes it a more appealing job, I think.

                            5) Former NBA/Knicks’ point guard Greg Anthony has a son who is a top 10 point guard in the Class of 2019. Young man plays at Archbishop Molloy in Queens.

                            4) ESPN’s Jay Bilas runs a couple of 3-day camps for high school basketball players, one in Oklahoma City, one in Charlotte.

The camps focus on developing fundamental skills instead of just playing games, but the cost ($599) is pretty steep— it includes two nights lodging.

There are also clinics for high school coaches ($199) and young coaches ($300).

Would be curious how much he rakes in from this venture.

                            3) Mets’ TV guy Keith Hernandez is back from knee replacement surgery; when he is engaged in the game, he can be very good, but he often gets bored and his mind wanders.

Anyway last night he was good; he was asking why Yoenis Cespedes would want to be squatting 500 pounds; how does that help him be a better baseball player? Does it contribute to his many injuries? Interesting questions. Then Cespedes got hurt again. Oy.

                            2) Good news/bad news department:

Good news: Fire fighters in Maine rescued a 37-year old woman from a rock in the Saco River after her inflatable raft was punctured by a rock.

Bad news: A sheriff’s deputy did a background check on the woman, which is routine; turns out she was wanted on an outstanding warrant for not paying a $720 fine related to DUI conviction, so she was immediately arrested. No bueno.

                            1) Headline in the Arizona Republic newspaper recently:

“Arizona physic hit by car says he never saw it coming”

That can’t help his psychic credentials any.
