  • BC-AP Sports Preview ******
    May 28, 2017

Some of the sports stories The Associated Press is covering Sunday. A full Sports ****** will be sent by about 3 p.m. All times EDT:

    - PARIS - Angelique Kerber becomes the first woman seeded No. 1 to lose in the French Open's first round in the professional era. Also, two-time Wimbledon champion Petra Kvitova returns to competition, winning her first match since being stabbed during an attack at her home six months ago.

    - INDIANAPOLIS -
Scott Dixon starts on the pole but all eyes will be one row back, where two-time Formula One champion Fernando Alonso will try to win the Indianapolis 500. Race starts 12:15 p.m.

    - CONCORD, N.C. -
Settle in for NASCAR's longest race. Kevin Harvick and All-Star race winner Kyle Busch start up front in the Coca Cola 600, an event that caps racing's biggest day. Race starts 6 p.m.

    - MONACO
    - Sebastian Vettel beats his Ferrari teammate Kimi Raikkonen to win the Monaco Grand Prix and comfortably extend his lead at the top of the standings.

    - PITTSBURGH
    - The Pittsburgh Penguins have been here before. The Nashville Predators have not. An unlikely Stanley Cup Final starts Monday, when the upstarts from ''Smashville'' will try to prevent the Penguins from being the first team in nearly 20 years to go back to back.

    - Contrary to popular belief, NHL referees aren't calling fewer penalties in the playoffs than in the regular season. There are more power plays a game through almost three rounds than in the regular season, but teams are scoring at a lower percentage on them.

    - PITTSBURGH - The Pittsburgh Pirates and New York Mets finish up a three-game series with a rare Sunday night meeting in Pittsburgh. Matt Harvey starts for New York against Pirates rookie Tyler Glasnow. Game starts 8:08 p.m.

    - HOUSTON - Houston starts Lance McCullers, who leads the majors with 22 consecutive scoreless innings, as the Astros looks to wrap up a three-game sweep of Baltimore. Alec Asher moves from the bullpen to start for the Orioles, who have lost a season-high six straight games. Game starts 2:10 p.m.

    - LOS ANGELES
    - Clayton Kershaw starts for the Los Angeles Dodgers against Jon Lester of the Chicago Cubs in a matchup of left-handers in the series finale. Game starts 4 p.m.

    - FORT WORTH, Texas - Webb Simpson takes a two-stroke lead into the final round at Colonial. Masters champion Sergio Garcia and Colonial winner Jordan Spieth are among 11 golfers within five strokes.

    - ANN ARBOR, Mich. - Shanshan Feng takes a one-stroke lead over Lizette Salas into the final round of the LPGA Volvik Championship.

    - STERLING, Va. -
Vijay Singh takes a one-stroke lead over Bernhard Langer into the final round of the Senior PGA Championship at Trump National.

    • MLB roundup: Trout injured in Angels' loss to Marlins
      May 28, 2017

MIAMI -- In a game marred by an injury to Angels star Mike Trout, Giancarlo Stanton and JT Riddle homered to lead the Miami Marlins to a 9-2 win over Los Angeles on Sunday afternoon at Marlins Park.

Trout, a two-time American League MVP who leads the majors with 16 homers, sprained his left thumb in the fifth inning while stealing second base. He left the game in the middle of the sixth, and the Angels said X-rays showed no fracture on his thumb.

Stanton's homer was his 13th of the season -- two short of the National League lead -- and his second in this series. The homer by Riddle was a two-run shot that snapped a 2-2 tie. Riddle also doubled and had three RBIs.

      Rays 8, Twins 6 (15 innings)

MINNEAPOLIS -- Evan Longoria and Logan Morrison hit back-to-back homers to open the 15th inning, and Tampa Bay outlasted Minnesota in the longest game in Target Field history.

Longoria's seventh homer of the season came off the second pitch of the inning from Hector Santiago (4-4), who is scheduled to be the Wednesday starter for Minnesota. Morrison followed with a long homer to deep right field on the next pitch as Tampa Bay won for the second time in five extra-inning games this season.

The game equaled the Target Field record of 15 innings and set a record for time of game for the eight-season-old stadium at 6 hours, 26 minutes.

      Dodgers 9, Cubs 4

LOS ANGELES -- Los Angeles hit four home runs at Dodger Stadium that completed a three-game sweep of Chicago.

Cody Bellinger and Enrique Hernandez each hit a three-run homer, Austin Barnes hit a solo shot, and Yasiel Puig put the game away with a two-run blast in the seventh inning.

The Cubs received solo home runs from Javier Baez and Willson Contreras and a two-run blast from Anthony Rizzo. Both teams scored all of their runs via the long ball.

      Yankees 9, Athletics 5

NEW YORK -- Aaron Judge hit his first career grand slam with two outs in the third inning, and New York beat Oakland.

Gary Sanchez and Brett Gardner added RBI doubles while Aaron Hicks and Chris Carter lifted sacrifice flies for the Yankees, who won for the fifth time in seven games.

Khris Davis slugged a two-run homer and Ryon Healy had a two-run single for the A's.

      Indians 10, Royals 1

CLEVELAND -- Jason Kipnis had four hits, including a home run, and Josh Tomlin pitched his fifth career complete game to lead Cleveland over Kansas City.

Austin Jackson had two hits and three RBIs as the Indians erupted for 10 runs and 18 hits after scoring just nine runs in their previous three games, all losses.

Tomlin (3-6) gave up six hits, struck out three and did not walk a batter. Danny Duffy (4-4) gave up six runs and nine hits in four innings to take the loss.

      Rangers 3, Blue Jays 1

TORONTO -- Joey Gallo hit the go-ahead solo homer in the fourth inning, Andrew Cashner pitched seven strong innings and Texas defeated Toronto.

In avoiding a sweep of the three-game series, the Rangers ended a five-game losing streak and stopped a five-game winning string by the Blue Jays.

Cashner (2-4) allowed five hits, two walks and one run while striking out two. Matt Bush pitched around a pair of two-out singles in the ninth for his sixth save.

      Padres 5, Nationals 3

WASHINGTON -- Ryan Schimpf hit his 13th homer, and Chase d'Arnaud had two hits and drove in two runs as San Diego beat Washington to avoid a three-game sweep.

Schimpf lined a two-run homer down the right field line in the first off Nationals starter Joe Ross (2-1) to give the Padres a 2-0 lead. Schimpf has just nine singles this year and is hitting .163 for San Diego, which struck out 31 times in the first two games of the series.

The winning pitcher was Kirby Yates (1-0), who came on in the fifth and retired all five batters he faced. Brandon Maurer threw the ninth for his sixth save.

      Mariners 5, Red Sox 0

BOSTON -- Christian Bergman tossed seven scoreless innings, Robinson Cano slugged a two-run homer, and Seattle snapped Boston's six-game winning streak.

Cano's homer was his ninth of the year. Guillermo Heredia added a home run, his third, and Nelson Cruz drove in a run as the Mariners matched a season high with 16 hits.

Bergman (2-2) reached the seven-inning plateau for just the second time in 60 career outings, allowing four hits and two walks with two strikeouts.

      Reds 8, Phillies 4

PHILADELPHIA -- Adam Duvall and Patrick Kivlehan both had multi-homer games, and Cincinnati hit five home runs in a win over Philadelphia at Citizens Bank Park.

Duvall's homers were both two-run shots, and he also had a run-scoring single in the first inning for a five-RBI game. Kivlehan hit two solo homers.

It was the ninth consecutive series loss for the Phillies.

      Astros 8, Orioles 4

HOUSTON -- George Springer hit a two-run homer as part of a six-run second inning, and Lance McCullers worked six solid innings as Houston capped a sweep of Baltimore.

The Astros completed a 6-4 homestand by pounding Orioles starter Alec Ashur (1-3), hitting for the cycle in the second inning to erase a three-run deficit.

The Orioles have dropped seven consecutive games.

      White Sox 7, Tigers 3

CHICAGO -- Miguel Gonzalez took a perfect game into the seventh inning before he allowed three hits and a run as Chicago beat Detroit.

The perfect game ended when leadoff hitter Andrew Romine reached on a hard grounder to shortstop Tim Anderson that was initially ruled an error. The call was later changed to a hit.

Gonzalez (4-5) struck out six and allowed three runs and six hits in 7 2/3 innings. He kept his perfect-hit bid alive despite a 30-minute rain delay in the fourth inning.

      Brewers 9, Diamondbacks 5

MILWAUKEE -- Domingo Santana hit his first career grand slam, and Jimmy Nelson struck out 10 as Milwaukee salvaged a series split with a victory over Arizona.

Nelson (3-3) allowed seven hits for the second consecutive outing but held Arizona to a run in seven innings.

Brandon Drury had three hits while Daniel Descalso, David Peralta and Nick Ahmed notched two each for the Diamondbacks, who were 3-for-7 with runners in scoring position and left seven stranded.

      Rockies 8, Cardinals 4

DENVER -- A four-run eighth inning steered Colorado over St. Louis.

The victory in the rubber game enabled the Rockies to win their fifth straight series and improve to 12-2-2 in series this season.

Gerardo Parra hit a three-run homer in the fourth inning, putting the Rockies ahead 4-0. Jedd Gyorko, Greg Garcia and Tommy Pham offset Parra's blast with solo homers, cutting the lead to one run.

      Giants 7, Braves 1

SAN FRANCISCO -- Johnny Cueto, bothered in recent games by blisters on his pitching hand, stopped his three-game losing streak as San Francisco beat Atlanta.

Cueto (5-4) allowed six hits and walk and one run while striking out eight and walking one in six innings.

San Francisco, in winning the rubber game of the three-game series at AT&T Park, tagged Atlanta knuckleballer R.A. Dickey (3-4) for seven runs (six earned) in six innings.

      Mets 7, Pirates 2

PITTSBURGH -- Jay Bruce went 3-for-5 with two doubles and two RBIs in New York's victory over Pittsburgh.

Curtis Granderson went 3-for-5 with an RBI for the Mets, and Lucas Duda hit a home run. Mets starter Matt Harvey (4-3) won back-to-back starts for the second time this season and the first time since April 6 and 11 -- his first two starts of the season. He pitched six innings, which was his longest outing since April 21, and scattered six hits while giving up just one run.

Gregory Polanco went 2-for-4 with a solo home run for the Pirates. He is 5-for-13 (.385) with two home runs since coming off the disabled list May 26.

      • Monday’s six-pack

Baseball broadcast teams I enjoy listening to:

        — Brian Anderson/Bill Schroeder, Brewers— Anderson is network TV material; he’s done some basketball last few years. Schroeder is terrific as the friendly analyst.

        — Drew Goodman/Jeff Huson/Ryan Spilborghs, Rockies— Huson is very good as an analyst; understated. Spilborghs was a player fairly recently and is slow to criticize.

        — Jason Benetti/Steve Stone, White Sox— Benetti only works Sox home games, which is sad. Stone is excellent.

        — Don Orsillo/Mark Grant, Padres— Red Sox stupidly canned Orsillo couple years ago; he is really good, but hard to work for a team as bad as the Padres.

        — Victor Rojas/Mark Gubicza, Angels— Gubicza is always upbeat; they’ll give subtle criticisms, sometimes even criticizing the home team. Not everyone does that.

        — Least favorite baseball announcer: Len Kasper, Cubs— I like his analyst Jim Deshaies,
but I just don’t like Kasper. He seems to intentionally aggravate the anti-jinx crowd. Cubs are kind of a national team; think they should have a better play-by-play guy.

        *************************

Monday’s List of 13: Happy Memorial Day, everyone……..

        13) Major league announcers don’t like people bugging them on Twitter about “jinxing” things.

For instance, I have Mike Foltynewicz on my fantasy team; he pitched Saturday and Chip Caray is saying early in the game how “….the Giants haven’t been hitting the ball well lately”, so of course the Giants hit three homers, score five runs fairly early and people are killing Caray on social media for jinxing the squad, at which point he blocks them from following him.

I think there is a middle ground; obviously what Caray says has zero impact on the game, but it still bugs me when announcers come out and say stuff, like he is trying to annoy the anti-jinx faction. There is a way of communicating things without actually saying them.

        12) Cardinals’ Paul DeJong homered in his first big league AB Sunday in Denver; he is the 118th major leaguer to homer in his first career at-bat.

        11) Mike Trout jammed his left thumb sliding head-first into second base Sunday and left the game. He played a couple innings in the field after the slide but when his turn to bat came he opted out. X-rays were negative; apparently it is a sprained thumb.

        10) Any Miami Heat player who puts their hands on their knees for a breather during a practice or game gets fined $100; not surprisingly, this is unique in the NBA.

        9) Chris Sale pitches against his old team, the White Sox in Chicago Tuesday. Last year Sale revolted when the White Sox were going to wear throwback dark blue jerseys when he pitched— he took scissors and cut the jerseys up so they couldn’t be worn.

If I owned the White Sox, we would definitely be wearing dark blue jerseys Tuesday night.

        8) I bitched and moaned about the home plate umpire in the Bronx Saturday, but there is also this: Jed Lowrie has been a major leaguer for ten years- Saturday was his first ejection, so not like he is chronic complainer. If he was that upset, there was a good reason for it.

I’m upset that the A’s have allowed 34 unearned runs, the most in MLB. There are no sports where you can be good if your defense sucks.

        7) In Miami Sunday, a batter let go of the bat with one hand after he swung and his backswing clipped the umpire on the side of his mask— never saw that before. Umps don’t wear helmets under their mask like catchers do; maybe they should.

        6) Golfer Zach Johnson got put on the clock by Tour officials Sunday for slow play and got a little upset about it; he dumped all the clubs out of his bag, on the course.

        5) 16 games Saturday and no team scored more than six runs, first time in baseball history that has happened. Elias Sports says that Saturday was the 703rd day in MLB history with 16+ games and that goes back to 1876.

        4) ABC is bringing The Gong Show back to TV on June 22; in the early 80’s, NBC ran this classic show on daytime TV, with the great Chuck Barris as its madcap, sometimes bizarre host. Gong Show is really a parody of American Idol; people go onstage and try to impress celebrity judges, but most of the acts were mediocre-to-terrible.

Mr Barris passed away earlier this year; the host makes/breaks this show, since the acts aren’t very good, the host damn well better be funny. Never heard of the guy they have hosting this version, but we’ll find out in a few weeks.

Go on Youtube and check out The Gong Show from back in the day; they had a comedian who was a regular who told jokes with a bag over his head (Unknown Comic) and Gene, Gene the Dancing Machine, a stagehand who occasionally would just pop onstage and start dancing as the show went to commercial.

        3) The most fun I’ve had as a baseball fan was the 2012 A’s making the playoffs; watched every game on the dish, as they rallied from 13 games behind in an unlikely stretch run. I mention this because it occurs to me that even though big league teams have 25-man rosters, most of the time it takes 32-35 guys, over the course of a season, for a team to make the playoffs.

In 2012, the A’s got two walk-off homers from Brandon Hicks, an infielder who wasn’t even on their playoff roster, but the two games he won with HR’s were the deciding factor in Oakland being division champs. Small contributions from a variety of people made a huge difference.

As far as 2012 being more fun than the 1972-74 A’s who won three straight World Series, I was an obnoxious kid back then and didn’t appreciate it as much as I should’ve. Plus, didn’t see too many games on TV back in the day. Nowadays, it is fun to fun watch all the games.

        2) White Sox rookie pitcher Tyler Danish won his first big league start Saturday; when he went to the White Sox FanFest in Chicago last winter, he told someone it was the first time he had ever seen snow in person. Lucky him; wish I had never seen snow.

        1) Today is Memorial Day, an important day in our country. Lot of people have risked their lives to protect the freedoms we have in this country. Today is the day we pause to remember these courageous humans who protect us, both now and in the past. Thank you!!!

            • LEADING OFF: Trout gets checked, Price makes season debut
              May 28, 2017

A look at what's happening all around the majors Monday:

              TROUT OUT?

The Angels will see how star Mike Trout is feeling, a day after he sprained his left thumb making a headfirst slide to steal a base in Miami. Trout left the game and X-rays were negative. The outfielder was scheduled for an MRI back in California before the series opener vs. Atlanta, and hopes to avoid the disabled list. The reigning AL MVP is hitting .337 and tied with Yankees rookie Aaron Judge for the major league home run lead with 16.

              PRICE PRIMED

Red Sox lefty David Price is set to make his season debut, starting against the White Sox in Chicago. He has been sidelined since in early spring training because of a strained left elbow. The 31-year-old former AL Cy Young Award winner made two Triple-A rehab starts and gave up nine runs and 12 hits in 5 2/3 innings. Price went 17-9 for Boston last year.

              SKIDDING

The Orioles have lost a season-worst seven in a row and been outscored 38-17 during the skid. Dylan Bundy (5-3, 2.92 ERA) aims to end the rut when he starts at Camden Yards against Yankees rookie Jordan Montgomery (2-3, 4.30 ERA).

              KEEP TRYING

Marlins righty Edinson Volquez leads the majors in the losses going into this start at home against the Phillies. He is 0-7 with a 4.82 ERA. Volquez signed with Miami after going 10-11 with a 5.37 ERA last year for Kansas City.

              FILLING IN

Oakland plans to recall righty Daniel Mengden from Triple-A Nashville to make his first major league start of the season in Cleveland. The 24-year-old missed much of the first two months following surgery on his right foot. He is 2-1 with a 2.21 ERA in four Triple-A starts this year. He reached the majors for the first time last season and went 2-9 with a 6.50 ERA in 14 starts for the A's.

                        • Monday's Diamond Notes
                          May 29, 2017

Hottest team: Astros (4-0 past four games, 15-5 past 20 overall)

The Astros enter Memorial Day with league's best winning percentage (.686), going 35-16 over the first 51 games with a 10-game lead in the American League West Division. They also lead the AL with a plus-66 run differential, second only to the Dodgers in the majors. The Astros might be even better if they didn't have to face the American League Central. They're just 5-8 against AL Central foes, and on Monday they open a set with division leader Minnesota at Target Field. We'll see if they can stay hot against Ervin Santana, the league leader in ERA at 1.80. The Astros counter with Brad Peacock, who is 2-5 in their past seven road outings against a team with a winning overall mark.

Coldest team Orioles (0-7 past seven games, 3-13 past 16 overall)

The Orioles were jockeying for first place in the American League East, but they have fallen on hard times. They're coming off a three-game sweep in Houston, totally outclassed by the Astros, and they're in the midst of a seven-game losing skid. The O's have averaged just 2.4 runs per game during the losing streak while allowing 5.92 runs per game over the past 13. Baltimore turns to Dylan Bundy to try and end the skid. They're 4-0 in Bundy's past four outings against divisional foes, 5-1 in his past six home starts and 5-2 in his past seven against teams with a winning overall record.

Hottest pitcher: Ervin Santana, Twins (7-2, 1.80 ERA)

Santana checks into Monday's game with the best ERA in the majors at 1.80, edging out Astros' Dallas Keuchel (1.81). The key to his success has been his ability to limit his hits allowed, giving up just 31 hits with 27 walks and 50 strikeouts over 70 innings. Opponents are hitting just .134 against Santana while he has posted an impressive 0.83 WHIP. He'll look to hold down the Astros, who rank seventh in the majors with 252 runs scored. He has yielded seven homers, and the Astros rank third in MLB with 72 clouts. It will be Santana's biggest test to date.

Coldest pitcher: Matt Moore, Giants (2-5, 5.28 ERA)

Moore is trending in the right direction with quality starts over his past three outings, but he still has just one win to show for his efforts and he has the highest ERA of any pitcher starting on Memorial Day. He'll also be facing a Washington Nationals offense ranking fourth in the majors with a plus-57 run differential while leading the National League East by 8 1/2 games. Conversely, the Nationals are 24-10 in Tanner Roark's past 34 outings, while going 11-5 over his past 16 road starts. While he has been pitching better, the Giants are still just 2-6 over Moore's past eight starts, and 0-4 over his past four assignments against teams with a winning percentage over .600.

Biggest UNDER run: Rays (7-1 past eight games overall)

The Rays erupted for eight runs in a win Sunday in Minnesota, snapping a seven-game under streak. It was a rare showing of offense, as they entered Sunday's game averaging just 3.0 runs per game during their seven-game under run. While the under is 7-1 over their past eight outings, the 'over' is 6-1 in Erasmo Ramirez's past seven road outings and 4-1 in his past five outings. The 'under' is 4-0 in their past four against AL West foes and 4-0 in their past four road games against a team with a losing record. The 'over' is 4-1 in the past five home games for Texas, but the under is 5-1-1 in Martin Perez's past seven home starts and 11-2 in the past 13 series openers for the Rangers.

Biggest OVER run: Marlins (6-2-1 past nine games overall)

The 'over' has been the play for Miami lately, although it's a mix of their offense and poor pitching. Their offense has been a bit erratic, recording run totals of 10, three, 11, one, eight, two and nine over the past seven outings. The Marlins are allowing 6.08 runs per game over the past 12 outings. The under is 22-9 in Miami's past 31 games against teams with a winning percentage under .400, and the over is 15-5-2 in the past 22 series openers for the Marlins. However, the 'under' is 4-1 in Edinson Volquez's past five starts and 7-2-2 in Jeremy Hellickson's past 11 starts overall for the Phillies. The under is also 6-0-1 in Hellickson's past seven starts against Miami, so the over streak will be put to the test.

Matchup to watch: Royals vs. Tigers

The Royals and Tigers do battle at Kauffman Stadium in Kansas City in a battle between two of the more disappointing teams in baseball. Each club entered the season with high hopes in the American League Central, but it hasn't gone according to plan. It might get worse for the Royals, who roll out Jason Hammel to face the Tigers. He has an abysmal 7.98 career ERA in nine appearances (six starts) against Detroit, posting a 2-2 record. Meanwhile, Daniel Norris enters with a 0-1 record and 3.47 ERA in four career outings against K.C. The Tigers enter just 1-4 over their past five overall, 0-4 in their past four road games agaisnt a right-handed starter and 0-4 in their past four vs. RHP. The Royals are just 1-8 over Hammel's past nine outings, 1-4 in their past five home starts and 4-10 in their past 14 games against teams with a losing overall record.

Betcha didn’t know: The Opening Day starter for the Angels, Ricky Nolasco, has faced Atlanta plenty over his career. He enters with a 6-10 record and a 5.11 ERA in 23 starts and one relief appearance in his career against the Braves. Meanwhile, Julio Teheran hasn't been much better, going 3-9 with a 5.63 ERA in 15 career interleague starts. The Braves are 1-4 over Teheran's past five outings, 0-5 in their past five against AL West foes and 12-26 in their past 38 interleague outings. On the flip side, the Halos are 4-0 in their past four at home and 4-0 in their past four home games against a right-handed starter. The Anges are also 4-1 in Nolasco's past five home starts against a team with a losing record.

Biggest public favorite: Indians (-250) vs. Athletics

Biggest public underdog: Tigers (+115) at Royals

Biggest line move: Indians (-210 to -250) vs. Athletics

                            • MLB notebook: Indians move Salazar to bullpen
                              May 28, 2017

MIAMI -- Los Angeles Angels slugger Mike Trout, a two-time American League MVP who leads the majors with 16 homers, sprained his left thumb in the fifth inning Sunday while stealing second base in an eventual loss to the Miami Marlins.

He left the game in the middle of the sixth, and the Angels said X-rays showed no broken bones.

"It was a scary thing," Trout said. "There's no fracture -- that's a relief.

"I jammed (my thumb) on the bag. It was sore. It was aching. I will ice it and see how it feels tomorrow."

--The Cleveland Indians announced that struggling right-handed starter Danny Salazar will be sent to the bullpen to work on his throwing routine and regain his confidence.

Salazar, an All-Star last season, is 3-5 with a 5.50 ERA in 10 starts this season, striking out 73 in 52 1/3 innings but allowing 55 hits and 28 walks. He owns the league's best strikeout rate.

Manager Terry Francona said the 27-year-old Salazar will be available as a reliever beginning Wednesday and might start a game next week during Cleveland's road trip.

--Second baseman Daniel Murphy was one of four regulars not in the lineup for the Washington Nationals in their series finale with the San Diego Padres on Sunday.

Murphy, who has been ill, did not play on Friday or Saturday against the Padres as Washington aces Max Scherzer and Stephen Strasburg combined for 28 strikeouts for 5-1 and 3-0 wins, respectively.

Also out of the starting lineup for rest days were right fielder Bryce Harper, left fielder Jayson Werth and catcher Matt Wieters. Harper is hitting .337 with a team-high 15 homers and 41 RBIs while Murphy is hitting .316 with nine homers and 33 RBIs.

--The St. Louis Cardinals placed second baseman Kolten Wong on the 10-day disabled list with a left elbow strain.

Wong was scratched from Saturday's lineup against the Colorado Rockies after experiencing soreness in his left elbow for a second time in a week. The DL move is retroactive to May 27.

Wong is batting .278 with one home run and 16 RBIs in 41 games this year. He left a May 20 game with left elbow discomfort and did not start again until Wednesday.

The Cardinals also recalled rookie infielder Paul DeJong from Triple-A Memphis prior to Sunday's game against the Rockies. He made his major league debut and became the ninth player in St. Louis history to homer in his first career at-bat.

DeJong, 23, was the Cardinals' fourth-round draft selection in 2015. He is batting .294 with a team-high 11 home runs (fifth in the Pacific Coast League) and 31 RBIs in 46 games with Memphis this season.

--The Texas Rangers placed left-hander Dario Alvarez on the 10-day disabled list Sunday retroactive to Thursday with a left elbow strain and have recalled infielder/outfielder Drew Robinson from Triple-A Round Rock.

Alvarez is 2-0 with a 3.48 ERA in 13 relief outings with Texas this season.

Robinson is 0-for-2 in one game with Texas this season. At Round Rock, he is batting .264 with one homer and 11 RBIs.

-- Five-time All-Star David Price is expected to make his season debut Monday for the Boston Red Sox in the opener of a three-game series against the Chicago White Sox.

The 31-year-old left-hander hasn't pitched in the majors since Oct. 2 because of a strained left elbow.

Price, the 2012 American League Cy Young winner, allowed nine runs (six earned) and 12 hits, struck out eight and walked two in 5 2/3 innings in two rehab starts for Triple-A Pawtucket. He threw 89 pitches in 3 2/3 innings in his last outing.
