    • LEADING OFF: Rangers roll into road trip, Wood good for LA
      May 18, 2017

A look at what's happening all around the majors Friday:

      ROLLING RANGERS

The Rangers take the longest winning streak in the majors into a series at Detroit. Texas has won nine straight, including eight games during a homestand that ended Wednesday, powering their way to a 22-20 record following an abysmal start. Nick Martinez (0-2, 5.04) will pitch the opener against Tigers left-hander Daniel Norris (2-2, 4.34).

      STRIKEOUT KING

Chris Sale goes for his eighth straight double-digit strikeout game when the Boston Red Sox take on the Oakland Athletics. Sale already has one streak of eight straight double-digit strikeout games in 2015 for the White Sox. The only other player with at least 10 strikeouts in eight straight starts was Pedro Martinez for Boston in 1999.

      GOOD WOOD

Alex Wood is throwing harder and pitching better than ever before for the Los Angeles Dodgers. The left-hander is averaging 93 mph on his fastball, easily the best mark of his career per Statcast, and batters are noticing. Wood (4-0, 2.27) has been overpowering of late, striking out 21 over 11 scoreless innings in his past two starts. He has 48 strikeouts in 35 2/3 innings this season while allowing just one home run. He'll face Miami left-hander Justin Nicolino (0-0, 1.50).

      HOME REMEDY?

The Mets return to Citi Field for six games after going 0-6 at Milwaukee and Arizona, their longest winless road trip since 1999. New York has lost seven consecutive games overall, a streak it will try to end when right-hander Jacob deGrom (2-1, 4.07) opposes Angels righty Ricky Nolasco (2-2, 4.34). Los Angeles has won four straight, and reigning AL MVP Mike Trout has homered five times in six games.

      BUILDING UP

Toronto's Aaron Sanchez and Baltimore's Chris Tillman square off in a battle of pitchers not far removed from injuries. Sanchez (0-1, 2.95) pitched five solid innings against Seattle in his return from the disabled list Sunday after missing time with a blister. He threw just 78 pitches in the 3-2 win, allowing five hits and an unearned run. Tillman (1-0, 2.89) has made two starts since recovering from right shoulder bursitis, but hasn't thrown more than five innings in a game yet.

      NERD IS THE WORD

Nerd Power is alive and well with Milwaukee. Eric Sogard has been a driving force behind the Brewers' ascent atop of the NL Central this week. Recalled from Triple-A last Friday, Sogard has two homers and is hitting .476, including four-hit games Wednesday and Thursday in wins over San Diego. Standing 5-foot-9 with black-framed glasses, Sogard was a fan favorite in Oakland for his hardly-intimidating look, and Milwaukee has quickly adopted the #NerdPower battle cry.

      • Friday's Diamond Notes
        May 18, 2017

Hottest team: Rangers (9-0 last nine)

Texas cleaned up on its homestand against subpar competition by winning all eight games against San Diego, Oakland, and Philadelphia. The Rangers outscored the Phillies, 22-8 during their three-game sweep in Arlington to move within 7 ½-games of red-hot Houston atop the AL West.

Now the Rangers have to prove their worth on the highway as they travel to Detroit to begin a weekend series at Comerica Park. Texas has slumped to a 4-11 record in its previous 15 games away from Globe Life Park, while scoring two runs or less eight times in this stretch. Nick Martinez will try to turn around Texas’ road woes, while attempting to continue its hot streak. Martinez is winless in two road starts this season, while giving up 11 runs in 11.1 innings of work.

Coldest team: Mets (0-7 last seven)

One week ago, New York sat at 17-16 and in second place of the NL East behind Washington. However, a series finale loss to San Francisco started a tailspin as the Mets were swept in a pair of road series at Milwaukee and Arizona. The Mets led in each of the past four games, but dropped the final two to the Diamondbacks by one run apiece.

New York plays its first interleague series of the season as the Angels invade Citi Field. Los Angeles is coming off a three-game home sweep of Chicago, but the Halos draw Jacob deGrom in the series opener. The Mets have won three of deGrom’s last four starts, but New York squandered a 7-1 lead in his previous outing at Milwaukee last Sunday in an 11-9 defeat.

Hottest pitcher: Charlie Morton, Astros (5-2, 3.97 ERA)

Dallas Keuchel is on his way to a second Cy Young award in three seasons, but Morton is also shining this season for Houston. Morton owns a perfect 5-0 record at Minute Maid Park this season, while the right-hander has allowed two earned runs or less in four of those victories. The veteran has also been helped out by terrific run support as the loaded Astros’ lineup has provided Morton at least eight runs in each of his last four starts. Morton faces the Indians on Friday as Houston has compiled a 5-1 record in home series openers this season.

Coldest pitcher: Jered Weaver, Padres (0-4, 6.05 ERA)

It’s hard to believe that Weaver won 20 games back in 2012 and has yet to pick up a victory in eight starts for San Diego this season. Weaver is actually coming off his best start of the season against the White Sox, allowing one earned run in six innings, but Chicago exploded for eight runs off the San Diego bullpen in the eighth inning of a 9-3 victory. The 34-year old didn’t allow a home run against the White Sox, but has given up multi-homers in six starts this season. Weaver tries to silence the Diamondbacks in the series opener, looking to avenge a 6-2 loss in late April.

Biggest OVER run: Red Sox (9-1 last 10)

Boston continues its series at Oakland on Friday as the Red Sox keep cashing OVERS, but not in convincing fashion. In the two-game series sweep of the Cardinals, the Red Sox won by scores of 6-3 on an 8 total and 5-4 on an 8 ½ total. In nine of 10 games during this OVER stretch, the Sox have hit scored at least four runs, while hitting the OVER in three straight Game 2’s of a road series. Ace Chris Sale began the season by finishing UNDER the total in six straight starts, but has eclipsed the OVER in his last two outings as he takes the hill on Friday.

Biggest UNDER run: Diamondbacks (12-4 on road)

Arizona is 3-2-1 to the OVER the last six games, but have been a terrific UNDER bet away from the desert. The D-backs head to San Diego to face the Padres this weekend as seven of Arizona’s past eight road contests have finished UNDER the total. In two of three meetings at Petco Park in mid-April, the D-backs scored a combined one run after putting up 11 in a blowout victory to begin the series. Taijuan Walker has hit the UNDER in three of his four road starts for Arizona, while drilling the UNDER on two high totals in his past two appearances.

Matchup to watch: Yankees vs. Rays

New York travels to Tampa Bay to play its third series this season against the Rays. The Yankees dropped two of three to open the season at Tropicana Field, but picked up revenge one week later by sweeping the Rays in the Bronx. Joe Girardi’s club has been rolling ever since as the Yankees sit atop the AL East heading into the weekend.

The Rays return home following an impressive road trip by capturing back-to-back series against the Red Sox and Indians. Tampa Bay won the final two games at Cleveland, while scoring 20 runs in the three-game set. The Rays have cashed the OVER in six straight contests, but Tampa Bay tries to snap a four-game skid in home series openers. Erasmo Ramirez tries to erase that dubious number for the Rays, making his second start for Tampa Bay after beating Detroit at home on April 20.

Luis Severino has been an impressive part of the Yankees’ rotation this season by striking out 47 batters in 42 innings of work. The right-hander picked up a no-decision in a win against the Astros last Sunday, while allowing seven hits and one earned run in his previous two road starts against the Cubs and Red Sox.

Betcha didn’t know: The Royals sit in last place of the AL Central and one of the reasons why (besides bad offense) is losing five times to the Twins this season. Kansas City makes its first trip to Target Field since getting swept at Minnesota in the opening series of the season. Nathan Karns hasn’t faced the Twins yet this season, but the Royals are 3-0 in his last three starts overall, while striking out 29 batters in this span.

Biggest public favorite: Dodgers (-225) vs. Marlins

Biggest public underdog: White Sox (+100) at Mariners

              • Turner injured, Dodgers beat Marlins
                May 18, 2017

LOS ANGELES (AP) Justin Turner rounded third base and grimaced, grabbing at his right hamstring in a frightening scene for the Los Angeles Dodgers.

After promising nights from Yasiel Puig and Hyun-Jin Ryu, the best news for the Dodgers after Thursday night's game was a glimmer of optimism in Turner's diagnosis.

Turner is due for more tests Friday after injuring his right hamstring in the seventh inning of Los Angeles' 7-2 victory over the Miami Marlins.

Turner was hurt running from second base to home and hobbled off the field with a trainer and manager Dave Roberts. He is hitting .379 with a homer and 17 RBIs.

''Talking to the training staff briefly, the strength was there still, which is positive,'' Roberts said. ''We'll do some testing, some scans (Friday) morning. To my eyes, it didn't look good coming around third base, but for the strength to still be there right now, to be a little more optimistic.''

Yasiel Puig, batting eighth, hit an 0-1 pitch from Edinson Volquez (0-6) into the left field seats to give the Dodgers a lead in the second inning.

Kenley Jansen entered with two on and two outs in the eighth and struck out all four of his batters for his eighth save. He pitched an immaculate inning, striking out three batters on nine pitches in an inning.

The Marlins (14-26) continued their slide, losing their fourth consecutive game and nine of the last 10.

Volquez allowed five runs in six innings, although he finished well after allowing five runs in the first three innings.

''Everyone comes to the ballpark trying to win,'' Volquez said. ''We'll come back (Friday) with a good attitude and try to win a game.''

Dodgers left-hander Hyun-Jin Ryu (2-5) took a grounder off the leg on a ball hit by Justin Bour in the sixth inning. Roberts and a trainer went to the mound, and after a quick conversation, Ryu's night was done. Ryu also got hit by a pitch on his right biceps while trying to bunt in the fourth. He helped his own cause in the third with a double to right and scored from second on Chase Utley's single.

''I think I could've stayed in,'' Ryu said through an interpreter. ''As a result, Hatch (Chris Hatcher) came in and didn't give up a run, so it was the right decision. If you ask me if I could've pitched, I definitely could've pitched.''

Ryu threw 5 1/3 innings and allowed two runs on seven hits - two of which were home runs. Although he's pitched well, Ryu may soon be the odd-man out in a deep Dodgers rotation.

Justin Bour hit a solo home run to right in the second inning. Christian Yelich homered to left-center field in the third. The Marlins had runners on base in the fourth, fifth and sixth innings, but couldn't score.

Adrian Gonzalez was back in the lineup for the Dodgers after being activated from the disabled list with herniated discs in his back. Gonzalez hit a sharp single to right field in the third inning.

                JANSEN A HIT

Jansen seemingly did everything Thursday, even batting in the eighth and getting an infield single, the second hit of his major league career.

                THAT LEFT A MARK

Volquez and Ryu are good friends, even after Volquez hit Ryu with a pitch. Volquez said he apologized to Ryu after. Volquez was with the Dodgers for part of the season in 2013.

''He sent me a picture,'' Volquez said. ''He's a good friend of mine since we were with the Dodgers. I said sorry and he sent me pictures (of the arm). He'll be OK.''

                TRAINER'S ROOM

Marlins: RHP Tom Koehler (bursitis right shoulder) was placed on the 10-day disabled list. ... LHP Wei-Yin Chin (arm fatigue) traveled with the team to Los Angeles, and doctors are discussing his situation and options.

Dodgers: INF Logan Forsythe (toe, hamstring) is nearing a return, possibly Sunday but more likely Tuesday after the team's day off Monday. ... RHP Kenta Maeda (left hamstring tightness) will throw four innings tomorrow in a rehab start in Class A Rancho Cucamonga and is expected to make his next start next week against St. Louis.

                UP NEXT

Marlins: LHP Justin Nicolino (0-0, 1.50 ERA) threw 7 1/3 scoreless innings in his season debut at Dodger Stadium last year. Nicolino has made one start since being recalled from Triple-A New Orleans. He had a quality start against the Braves, allowing one run in six innings.

Dodgers: LHP Alex Wood (4-0, 2.27 ERA) is coming off earning NL player of the week honors after pitching 11 scoreless innings and striking out 21 during that stretch. In his last start he recorded his fourth-straight win after six scoreless innings at Colorado. He's the only Dodgers starter without a loss this season.

                • Mets' Matz, Lugo make first minor league rehab appearances
                  May 18, 2017

LAKELAND, Fla. (AP) Help may be on the way for the hobbled New York Mets.

Steven Matz and Seth Lugo made their first minor league rehab appearances Thursday night, pitching to Travis d'Arnaud in a game with Class A St. Lucie.

The left-handed Matz started and went three innings, allowing a run and two hits while throwing 53 pitches against Detroit's Lakeland affiliate. The right-handed Lugo followed with 3 2/3 scoreless innings on 42 pitches. Both pitchers have been sidelined since spring training with inflammation in their pitching elbows.

D'Arnaud is working his way back from a bruised right wrist. He caught seven innings and had two singles in four at-bats.

The Mets have dropped seven straight and are seven games under .500 for the first time since September 2014. The rotation has been particularly troubled, posting the third-worst ERA in the majors (5.13) entering Thursday while missing Matz, Lugo and ace Noah Syndergaard, out until after the All-Star break with a torn muscle behind his right arm.

Braves' Freeman out with fractured wrist
                  May 18, 2017

Atlanta Braves superstar first baseman Freddie Freeman sustained a fractured left wrist and is expected to miss at least 10 weeks, the team announced on Thursday.

Freeman, who was placed on the 10-day disabled list on Thursday, sustained the injury after being hit by a fastball from Toronto Blue Jays left-hander Aaron Loup in Wednesday's interleague game. The 27-year-old slowly walked toward the dugout with his head down after being hit by the pitch.

Initial X-rays were inconclusive, but MRI and CT scans on Thursday revealed that Freeman sustained the second significant wrist injury of his young career. The two-time All-Star missed considerable time in 2015 while dealing with a right wrist injury.

"It's a tough blow. It wasn't the news I wanted to hear," Freeman said. "I had a feeling, but I was hoping for the best.

"It was just one of those pitches that got away. There was no intent. He was just trying to get me out."

Freeman was off to the best start of his career, batting .341 with a National League-best 14 homers and 25 RBIs in 37 games. He is hitting .290 in his career with 152 homers and 540 RBIs in 946 contests.

"When the best hitter in the game goes out, it really (stinks)," Braves starter Mike Foltynewicz said following Wednesday's 8-4 victory over Toronto.

Atlanta also signed veteran first baseman James Loney, who has a .284 career average over 11 seasons with the Los Angeles Dodgers, Boston Red Sox, Tampa Bay Rays and New York Mets. Loney hasn't played any major league games this season and was released by the Detroit Tigers earlier this year.

The Braves also recalled infielder Rio Ruiz from Triple-A Gwinnett in a corresponding move on Thursday. Ruiz, who made his major league debut after playing in five games in 2016, is batting .262 with four homers and 16 RBIs in 37 contests with Gwinnett this season.

Ruiz is playing third base on Thursday with Jace Peterson moving to first base.

DETROIT (AP) Mike Napoli and Joey Gallo homered, and the Texas Rangers beat the Detroit Tigers 5-3 on Friday night for their 10th straight victory.

Nick Martinez (1-2) gave up one unearned run and four hits over five innings, ending an 11-start winless streak that dated to Aug. 5, 2015. Matt Bush earned his fifth save in six chances, striking out Alex Avila with runners on the corners and two outs.

Daniel Norris (2-3) allowed five runs and seven hits while striking out eight over 5 2/3 innings.

                        DODGERS 7, MARLINS 2

LOS ANGELES (AP) - Alex Wood pitched 7 1/3 scoreless innings for his third straight start without allowing a run, and Cody Bellinger, Chris Taylor and Brett Eibner homered to lead the Dodgers to a victory over the Miami Marlins in a game that saw benches empty in the ninth.

Wood (5-0) held the Marlins to six hits while walking two and striking out four. He extended his scoreless innings streak to 20 1/3 innings - spanning three-plus starts.

Benches and bullpens emptied in the top of the ninth when Dodgers reliever Ross Stripling threw behind the back of Miami's Giancarlo Stanton, one inning after Marlins reliever AJ Ramos hit Eibner with a pitch following Bellinger's two-run homer. Stripling, Dodgers bench coach Bob Geren and Marlins manager Don Mattingly were all ejected. Geren and a heated Mattingly had to be pulled apart during the players' scrum in the middle of the field.

Taylor hit a solo home run in the third and Eibner, just called up from Triple-A Oklahoma City earlier in the day, hit a two-run homer in fourth against Miami right-hander Justin Nicolino (1-1).

                        RAYS 5, YANKEES 4

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (AP) - Evan Longoria got four hits, including a tiebreaking single off Tyler Clippard (0-2) in the eighth inning.

Danny Farquhar (2-1) induced an inning-ending double play from Aaron Judge in the eighth, and Alex Colome got three outs for his 11th save.

Matt Holliday tied it at 4 on a two-run homer in the eighth off Ryne Stanek.

                        BREWERS 6, CUBS 3

CHICAGO (AP) - Jett Bandy and Domingo Santana hit two-run singles to lead Milwaukee.

On an afternoon with a 46-degree temperature and 37 wind-chill at the start, Bandy walked and scored on Orlando Arcia's bases-loaded infield single for a 4-3 lead in the fifth. The game was delayed 1 hour, 59 minutes in the top of the sixth, and Santana boosted the lead with his single just after the delay.

Arcia had three hits and an RBI single off Mike Montgomery (0-3) as the NL Central leaders won for the 10th time in 12 games.

Chicago dropped to 21-20 as Cubs pitchers walked 10.

Wily Peralta (5-2) struck out five over two scoreless innings, and Carlos Torres worked the ninth for his first save.

                        PHILLIES 7, PIRATES 2

PITTSBURGH (AP) - Jeremy Hellickson (5-1) allowed two runs - one earned - and two hits over six innings, then left after grabbing his right side while running out an RBI double in the seventh. Philadelphia which ended a four-game losing streak, had lost 15 of its previous 18.

Maikel Franco and Freddy Galvis had two hits each for the Phillies, and Cameron Rupp hit a three-run homer in the ninth.

Trevor Williams (2-3) gave up allowed three runs and four hits in 5 2/3 innings

                        METS 3, ANGELS 0

NEW YORK (AP) - Jacob deGrom (3-1) dominated until dealing with a torn callous on the ring finger of his throwing hand in the seventh, then escaped a no-out, bases-loaded jam that inning to help New York avoid what would have been its first eight-game skid since losing 11 straight in 2004.

After multiple visits by Mets coaches and a trainer, DeGrom survived the seventh with a strikeout, a juggling catch by shortstop Jose Reyes on Ben Revere's bloop into short left and Cameron Maybin's flyout. Jerry Blevins got two outs in his major league-leading 25th appearance, Paul Sewald recorded an out in the eighth and Addison Reed pitched the ninth for his fifth save.

Ricky Nolasco (2-3) allowed two runs, one earned, over six innings. Los Angeles had won four straight.

Michael Conforto led off the seventh with his team-high 11th homer.

                        ROCKIES 12, REDS 6

CINCINNATI (AP) - Alexi Amarista hit a three-run homer off Lisalverto Bonilla (0-2) and a run-scoring single during Colorado's eight-run, sixth-inning rally. The Rockies lead the NL in wins at 27-16, their best mark through 43 games.

Nolan Arenado had a two-run homer off Wandy Peralta. Amarista kept it going with an RBI single during his second at-bat in the inning, matching his career high with four RBIs. Colorado sent 14 batters to the plate and piled up nine hits overall.

The Reds have lost seven straight, their longest skid since they dropped 11 in a row last May.

Left-hander Tyler Anderson (3-4) allowed allowed two runs, including Eugenio Suarez's homer, in six innings.

                        BRAVES 7, NATIONALS 4

ATLANTA (AP) - Nick Markakis hit a go-ahead single off Enny Romero (2-2) in the eighth inning and Kurt Suzuki added a two-run homer. Suzuki tied the score 4-4 with a fifth-inning RBI double off Gio Gonzalez.

Arodys Vizcaino (2-1) got three straight outs, two on strikeouts, in the eighth, and Jim Johnson pitched a perfect ninth for his seventh save.

                        INDIANS 5, ASTROS 3

HOUSTON (AP) - Edwin Encarnacion hit a two-run homer and Jason Kipnis and Lonnie Chisenhall had solo shots.

Trevor Bauer (4-4) gave up three runs and five hits while striking out a season-high nine in 5 2/3 innings to improve to 7-0 in seven career starts against the Astros. Cody Allen got three straight outs to remain perfect in 11 save chances.

Encarnacion's home run off Charlie Morton (5-3) tied it at 2-all in the fourth and Kipnis gave the Indians the lead with his home run in the fifth.

                        ORIOLES 5, BLUE JAYS 3, 10 INNINGS

BALTIMORE (AP) - Welington Castillo hit a pair of homers, including a go-ahead two-run shot in the 10th inning, to lead the Baltimore over Toronto. The Orioles won for just the second time in seven games, but are just a half-game behind the first-place New York Yankees.

Castillo tied it at 3 in the sixth with a towering two-run homer off Aaron Sanchez. The Blue Jays seemingly took the lead in the seventh when Baltimore reliever Darren O'Day struck out Justin Smoak with the bases loaded with two outs, but the ball got past Castillo, allowing a runner to score. After a manager's review, however, Smoak was ruled out because the ball hit him during the swing, per major league rules.

After Mark Trumbo singled with two outs in the 10th, Castillo followed with a home run off Jason Grilli (1-4). It was his first career game-ending home run. Mychal Givens (4-0) picked up the win for Baltimore.

                        TWINS 4, ROYALS 3, 10 INNINGS

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) - Pinch hitter Kennys Vargas launched a tying, two-run homer in the ninth inning and Jorge Polanco hit a sacrifice fly in the 10th, lifting the Minnesota Twins over the Kansas City Royals.

Polanco lofted a soft liner to left field and Joe Mauer beat Alex Gordon's throw to the plate. Al Albuquerque (0-1) walked the first two batters of the inning and reliever Travis Wood walked Max Kepler, loading the bases with no outs for Polanco.

Brandon Kintzler (2-0) allowed two hits in the top of the 10th, but snagged a comebacker to start an inning-ending double play.

                        GIANTS 6, CARDINALS 5

ST. LOUIS (AP) - Eduardo Nunez doubled in two runs in the ninth inning and the San Francisco Giants rallied to defeat the St. Louis Cardinals. The win improves the Giants to 7-15 away from San Francisco. They have won six of seven overall.

The Cardinals dropped their third straight and fourth of six. It's their fourth three-game skid of the season.

Bryan Morris (2-0) pitched a perfect eighth inning, striking out two, to pick up the victory. Mark Melancon earned his seventh save.

The Giants scored twice off Cardinals closer Seung Hwan Oh (0-2) in the ninth to take the lead. It was Oh's second blown save of the year.

                        ATHLETICS 3, RED SOX 2, 10 INNINGS

OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) - Mark Canha hit a leadoff homer in the 10th, one inning after Jackie Bradley Jr. robbed a potential game-winning homer by Oakland and the Athletics beat the Boston Red Sox.

The A's overcame the sensational catch by Bradley and a record-tying eighth straight double-digit strikeout game from Chris Sale to win their second in a row in the series against Boston.

Ryan Dull (2-2) pitched a scoreless 10th for the win.

Heath Hembree (0-2) was the loser.

                        WHITE SOX 2, MARINERS 1, 10 INNINGS

SEATTLE (AP) - Melky Cabrera doubled in the go-ahead run with two outs in the top of the 10th inning to lift the Chicago White Sox past the Seattle Mariners.

Jose Abreu hit a solo homer in the sixth for the White Sox, who snapped a seven-game road losing streak and four-game overall skid.

White Sox starter Jose Quintana allowed just one hit with seven strikeouts over eight innings, but left with the game tied at 1. David Robertson (3-1) pitched the final two innings, retiring all six batters, to earn the win.

Mariners reliever Tony Zych (2-1) hit Kevan Smith with a pitch to lead off the 10th. Smith was replaced by pinch-runner Leury Garcia, who advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt and groundout before scoring on Cabrera's double.

                        DIAMONDBACKS 10, PADRES 1

SAN DIEGO (AP) - Arizona's Jake Lamb had two home runs and five RBIs as the Diamondbacks coasted after an eight-run first inning to crush the San Diego Padres.

Taijuan Walker (4-3) was the beneficiary of the 16-hit attack as Arizona won its fourth straight. Walker, who had lost his last two starts, pitched six scoreless innings and was charged with two hits. Randall Delgado earned his first save.

Jered Weaver (0-5) had the shortest non-injury start of his 12-year career. Weaver got just two outs in surrendering seven runs, five hits and two walks. It was San Diego's most lopsided loss of the season as it dropped its fourth straight and ninth of its last 11 games. The Padres fell to 4-13 in May.

                        • Saturday’s List of 13: Clearing out a cluttered mind……

                          13) Paolo Espino is 30 years old; he’s pitched in the minor leagues for 10 years— 291 games, 191 starts, 1,304 IP. Finally, this week he got the call to the major leagues and started for Milwaukee at Wrigley Field Friday.

Imagine the emotion he felt? How excited he must’ve been? His dad flew all the way from Panama to see the game. Luckily for him, the wind was whipping hard and it was blowing in, which makes Wrigley a supreme pitchers’ park.

                          12) Brandon Kintzner is the Twins’ closer; he’s 32 years old, from Palo Verde HS in Las Vegas and Dixie State in Utah. Back in 2009, he was offered a chance to try out for the role of Tim Hudson in Moneyball, but chose instead to play in an independent league all-star game.

Luckily for him, the Brewers spotted him at the All-Star Game, signed him to a minor league deal and he made it to Miller Park the next year. Now he is the Twins’ closer and a good one.

                          11) Jose Abreu hasn’t homered in 66 plate appearances at home this year; he’s hit seven in 95 PA’s on the road. That could be weather-related; Abreu’s bat has often heated up when the weather does. Hasn’t been too warm on the south side of Chicago this spring.

                          10) Quick story from my days coaching Little League:

I was an assistant coach; my future ex-wife’s nephew was on the team, which wasn’t a good team. I’m warming up our starting pitcher at practice one night; he throws strikes, but didn’t throw hard, but at least he throws strikes.

After three pitches, the kid says to me, “You know, I can pitch left-handed.” I’m thinking to myself, “Kid, you can barely pitch right-handed.” But our team wasn’t good, so I tell him to throw me a couple left-handed.

Well, what do you know; the kid threw much harder, and a heavy ball— he was good!!!! I’m like, what took you so long to tell us? Now I have to break the news to our head coach without him thinking I’m pranking him.

We didn’t have a good season, but the kid did real well pitching lefty (he also was a catcher and played righty as a catcher); he would’ve made the All-Star team except his dad got transferred out-of-state for work so the family moved as soon as school got out.

Just goes to show you; keep your ears open. You never know what you might hear.

                          9) Anaheim Ducks’ Corey Perry has three overtime goals in the NHL playoffs this spring, the first player to do that since Maurice Richard in 1951.

                          8) There have been 26 overtime games in the NHL playoffs this spring; the record is 28 (1993), they had 27 in 2013. Playoff hockey is way more fun to watch than the NBA playoffs.

                          7) When the Las Vegas Golden Knights have their expansion draft next month (yes, the NHL has a team in Las Vegas now), the Knights will select 30 players- they have to take at least one player from every team in the league.

                          6) Stayed up late Thursday night watching a replay of Super Bowl XIV, from January of 1980, Rams-Steelers. Long time ago, but I had never seen the replay of that game. Rams had won seven division titles in a row, but only made the Super Bowl in ’79 after they started the season 4-5 and survived a bunch of injuries.

                          Some observations from the broadcast:
                          — Football was way different in 1980; guys got hit out of bounds a few times- no flags.
                          — TV graphics were obviously way worse; no game clock on the screen until the last minute.
                          — CBS analyst Tom Brookshier wouldn’t have lasted two weeks in today’s politically correct world. He was funny as hell and told the truth, but people today don’t always want the truth.
                          — The whole world is so different now; there were over 100,000 people there, doubt any of them had phones in their pockets. How many people go to games now without a cellphone?
                          — Rams basically played that Super Bowl at home, at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena. It was their last year at the Coliseum before they moved to Anaheim.
                          — Teams substituted so much less then than they do now, from play-to-play.

                          5) Miami Marlins hired former big league OF Todd Hollandworth as a TV analyst this year; he is very good, and for one reason— Marlins’ broadcasts are like listening to Hollandsworth and Rich Waltz sit around and talk about ball. They’re not announcing the game as much as they’re just talking about baseball and having a good time. Very relaxed; fun to listen to.

                          4) My personal opinion on the NBA Draft is this: If I ran an NBA franchise and could take Lonzo Ball, I wouldn’t let his father’s antics make me pick someone else.

That is assuming I thought Ball was the best player available and fitted what my team needed. UCLA had a terrific season this past year; the kid is a really good player. NBA players are well-versed in tuning out distractions.

                          3) Ryan Fitzpatrick signed as a free agent QB with the Buccaneers; if he throws a pass for Tampa Bay this season, he’ll be the sixth QB in NFL history to throw a pass for seven different teams, joining: Jeff Blake, Steve Bono, Chris Chandler, Gus Frerotte and Vinny Testaverde.

                          2) Je’rell Springer didn’t play HS basketball last winter due to eligibility issues after he changed schools in Las Vegas, but he got a scholarship from Southern Utah anyway, turning down BYU, an unusual choice. Springer is a great get for the Big Sky’s Thunderbirds.

                          1) Will Nerd Power catch on in Milwaukee? Eric Sogard (he wears glasses when he plays) came up to the Brewers this week and went 10-17 (.588) in his first six games with the Crew, with two 4-hit games. This is the same guy who hit .239 in 1,210 AB’s over six years in Oakland.

Sogard was once a 2nd round draft pick by the Padres out of Arizona State; terrific fielder. Wish he had hit like this for the A’s.

My condolences to Brewers’ TV analyst Bill Schroeder, whose mom passed away this week. I lost my dad two years ago last night; miss him every day.

                            • LEADING OFF: Scherzer ready after liner, Senzatela at Cincy
                              May 19, 2017

A look at what's happening all around the majors Saturday:

                              SCHERZER READY

Washington's Max Scherzer says he is ready to start against Atlanta, six days after he was struck on the left knee by a line drive off the bat of Philadelphia's Michael Saunders. It first appeared Scherzer couldn't put weight on the leg following the fourth-inning play, but he lasted six innings.

''It's unbelievable, I don't even have a mark,'' Scherzer said Friday.

Bartolo Colon is to start for the Braves.

                              ---

SENZATELA AT GREAT AMERICAN BALL PARK

Rockies rookie Antonio Senzatela gets acquainted with a ballpark that punishes small mistakes. He'll make his first career appearance at Great American Ball Park, one of the most homer-friendly in the majors. Senzatela is second in the NL with six wins, including 2-0 in three road starts. He's allowed only one homer in starts at San Diego, at San Francisco and at Milwaukee.

                              ---

                              TANAKA TURNAROUND?

Yankees ace Masahiro Tanaka (5-2) looks to rebound from his worst major league appearance when he starts against Matt Andriese (3-1) and the Tampa Bay Rays. Tanaka allowed three first-inning home runs Sunday against Houston and gave up a career-high eight runs in 1 2/3 innings, including and four home runs.

                              ---

                              PITCHING IN

Mets righty Zack Wheeler (2-2, 3.76) has hit his stride after a difficult start to his first big league season since 2014. He's allowed one earned run in each of his last three starts, going 1-0 with a 1.62 ERA - a needed boost for a New York staff that entered Friday last in the majors with a 5.13 ERA. He'll oppose 6-foot-9 Angels righty Alex Meyer (2-1, 5.59), who pitched one-run ball into the seventh inning against Detroit last time out.
