        • Friday's Diamond Notes
          April 28, 2017

Hottest team: Phillies (6-0 last six) at Dodgers

Philadelphia finished off a perfect 5-0 homestand after sweeping Atlanta and Miami to leap above the .500 mark. The Phillies won three games by one run apiece, including Thursday’s 3-2 victory over the Marlins to win their third consecutive series.

A seven-game road trip for the Phillies begins in Los Angeles as Philadelphia will face both teams that played for the National League pennant (Dodgers and Cubs). In fact, 16 of the next 18 games for the Phillies take place against playoff squads from last season. Philadelphia sends out Jerad Eickhoff to the mound in the series opener at Dodger Stadium, as the Phillies own a 1-3 record with the right-hander on the hill even though he has allowed two runs or less three times in April.

Coldest team: Mets (1-10 last 11) at Nationals

Who would have thought at this point in the season that New York would be sitting at the bottom of the NL East? The Mets are coming off a dreadful 1-7 homestand, punctuated by consecutive losses to the Braves. In the previous series, the Nationals pulled off a three-game sweep of the Mets at Citi Field, while scoring only seven runs.

New York has needed to shuffle its rotation the last few days with ace Noah Syndergaard getting bumped to arm soreness. Jacob deGrom looks to stop the bleeding in the series opener at Nationals Park as the Mets’ right-hander is winless in four starts. deGrom struck out 10 batters in 5.2 innings against Washington last Saturday in a 3-1 defeat as a -110 favorite, as the 28-year old will be listed as an underdog on Friday opposite Nationals’ ace Max Scherzer.

Hottest pitcher: Carlos Carrasco, Indians (2-1, 1.65 ERA)

Cleveland is coming off its third consecutive series victory after edging Houston on Thursday, 4-3. Carrasco is fresh off his best start of the young season by tossing eight scoreless innings and scattering three hits in a 7-0 rout of the White Sox as a heavy road favorite. The righty will be listed as a favorite of -200 or higher for the fourth straight start against Seattle on Friday, as Carrasco has given up five earned runs in his first four outings.

Coldest pitcher: Jeff Samardzija, Giants (0-4, 7.40 ERA)

San Francisco has been the biggest disaster this season in the National League at 8-15 and in the NL West cellar. What’s not helping is the lack of success from Samardzjia, who has allowed at least four earned runs in three of his four starts this season. The former Notre Dame football standout was knocked around at Colorado in his last outing by giving up seven earned runs in 5.1 innings in an 8-0 defeat. Samardzija faces the Padres as San Francisco won four of his six starts against San Diego last season.

Biggest OVER run: Reds (6-0 last six)

Cincinnati began the season on fire at 7-2, but its pitching has let them down of late. The Reds have dropped seven of their past eight games, while allowing a total of 29 runs in a three-game sweep by the Brewers. During this current six-game OVER streak, the Reds have given up at least five runs each time, but managed to plate seven runs or more three times. Tim Adleman takes the hill for Cincinnati, as he cashed the UNDER in four of his final five road starts last season.

Biggest UNDER run: Angels (1-10 on road)

The Yankees currently have the longest UNDER streak in baseball at only three, but we’ll focus on Los Angeles with its prowess to hit UNDERS on the highway. The Halos’ offense has been miserable away from Orange County by scoring two runs or less in seven of their last eight road contests. The Angels travel to Texas for a weekend series as Los Angeles scored a total of six runs in the final two losses to the Rangers earlier this month. Tyler Skaggs gets the start for L.A. as the Angels have finished UNDER the total in each of his two road outings this season.

Matchup to watch: Cubs vs. Red Sox

Two of the legendary franchises in baseball meet at Fenway Park for the first time since 2014 when Chicago pulled off a three-game sweep. The defending champions still haven’t swept a series this season as the Cubs fell to the Pirates on Wednesday, 6-5 as -150 road favorites. Chicago eclipsed the OVER for the eighth time in the last nine contests, while the Cubs look to improve on a 5-0 mark against left-handed starting pitchers.

Drew Pomeranz gets the call for Boston in the opener as the southpaw lost in his last start at Baltimore, 2-0. Pomeranz yielded five hits and two earned runs in 5.1 innings, as the Red Sox dropped one of his starts for the first time since last September. The Red Sox have compiled a 2-5 record the last seven games, while scoring only one run total in a pair of defeats to the rival Yankees at home.

Jake Arrieta counters for the Cubs, as the former Cy Young winner makes his fourth road start of the season. The right-hander owns a perfect 3-0 record in his three starts away from Wrigley Field, while eight of his past nine outings dating back to last September have come on the highway. Arrieta dominated the Red Sox three years ago in their previous matchup by allowing one hit in 7.2 innings and striking out 10 in a 2-0 shutout.

Betcha didn’t know: The Astros have complete ownership of the Athletics by capturing nine straight meetings in the series since last July. Houston pulled off a two-game road sweep of Oakland two weeks ago, as the two AL West rivals hook up at Minute Maid Park on Friday. After closing out last season by losing four straight home series openers, the Astros have started 2-1 in Game 1’s at Minute Maid Park, including two shutouts.

Biggest public favorite: Indians (-200) vs. Mariners

Biggest public underdog: Twins (+115) at Royals

Biggest line move: Dodgers (-165 to -185) vs. Phillies

          • LEADING OFF: Bruising Nats host battered Mets, Cubs-Red Sox
            April 27, 2017

A look at what's happening around the majors today:

            WASHINGTON CAPITALIZES

Trea Turner and the Nationals clubbed their way through Coors Field this week, scoring 11 or more runs in three straight games for the first time since they were the Montreal Expos in 1986. Turner had a huge four-game series in Colorado, getting seven extra-base hits, driving in 11 runs and scoring 10. Max Scherzer and Washington now host the Mets - New York, which has lost six in a row, might find out how long slugger Yoenis Cespedes will be out with an injured hamstring.

            OLD-TIMEY

The Cubs visit Fenway Park as World Series champions, with Jake Arrieta (3-0, 3.65 ERA) facing Drew Pomeranz. The Red Sox are 5-7 vs. the Cubs in interleague play - not including the 1918 Fall Classic, won by Babe Ruth and Boston - and got swept by Chicago at home in three games in 2014.

            ON A ROLL

The Phillies own the longest winning streak in the majors, taking a six-game run into Dodger Stadium. Maikel Franco has 20 RBIs in Philadelphia's 20 games despite hitting just .221.

            TRY AGAIN

Toronto is the only team in the majors that hasn't won two straight games this season. The Blue Jays hope to break that streak this weekend when they host Tampa Bay. Marcus Stroman pitches for the hosts - in his last start, he threw a complete game against the Angels. Stroman also played this week in St. Louis, delivering a pinch-double for his first career hit and scoring in an extra-inning win.

            TOUGH CHOICE

Diamondbacks right-hander Shelby Miller has a partially torn ligament in his throwing elbow, leaving him with a difficult decision. He could have Tommy John surgery, a route that would keep him out at least until the middle of next season. He also could try rehabilitating it, even go with stem cell injections, though that comes with the risk of tearing the ligament completely.

The 26-year-old Miller appeared to be getting back on track this season after struggling in 2016. He was 2-2 with a 4.09 ERA in four starts before the injury.

            • MLB notebook: Diamondbacks' Miller may need Tommy John surgery
              April 27, 2017

Arizona Diamondbacks right-hander Shelby Miller has a torn ulnar collateral ligament in his right elbow and is considering season-ending Tommy John surgery, the pitcher said Thursday.

Miller's MRI exam results were reviewed by three doctors this week after he experienced tightness in the elbow during Sunday's start against the Los Angeles Dodgers. Tommy John surgery would likely cause him to miss part of the 2018 season.

The consensus from the doctors is that the ligament isn't fully torn but the 26-year-old Miller also has a flexor strain in the elbow. Failing to have surgery would also qualify as a gamble.

Miller is 2-2 with a 4.09 ERA this season.

--New York Mets have more injury problems, this time involving left fielder Yoenis Cespedes and pitcher Noah Syndergaard.

Cespedes exited Thursday's game against the Atlanta Braves in the fourth inning after aggravating a left hamstring injury while rounding first base on a double.

Syndergaard was scratched from his scheduled start and sent to see a specialist due to tightness in his right biceps. Manager Terry Collins told reporters that Syndergaard is dealing with a "tired arm" and that the 24-year-old had been bothered by discomfort since his last start a week ago against the Philadelphia Phillies.

--The Cincinnati Reds activated former All-Star catcher Devin Mesoraco from the 10-day disabled list.

To open the roster spot, Cincinnati sent right-handed reliever Barrett Astin to Triple-A Louisville.

Mesoraco hasn't played yet in 2017 as he recovers from last season's shoulder and hip surgeries. Mesoraco finished a 20-day rehab stint earlier this week.

--Relief pitcher Jason Motte, whose career went downhill following Tommy John surgery four years ago, is back in the majors with the Atlanta Braves after being called up from Triple-A Gwinnett.

Motte, 34, pitched 5 1/3 scoreless innings with six strikeouts while allowing just two hits and one walk for Gwinnett.

Motte tied for the league lead in saves with 42 for the St. Louis Cardinals in 2012. But he was bothered by elbow soreness during the ensuing spring training, and had Tommy John surgery in May 2013.

--Toronto Blue Jays right-hander Aaron Sanchez is progressing from a blister issue and is expected to start Sunday's game against the Tampa Bay Rays.

Sanchez is currently on the disabled list after a blister appeared on his right middle finger. He pitched a bullpen session on Thursday and will throw another one on Friday.

--The Seattle Mariners outrighted outfielder Leonys Martin to Triple-A Tacoma.

The Mariners also activated Rob Whalen from the 10-day disabled list and optioned the right-hander to the Triple-A club.

Martin, who was designated for assignment by Seattle on April 23, batted .111 with five runs scored in 15 games with the Mariners this season.

--Boston Red Sox pitching prospect Kevin Steen was seriously injured in a car accident on Wednesday night near Fort Myers, Fla.

Steen, 20, was taken to Lee Memorial Hospital after his SUV was hit by another vehicle that had went airborne after crossing the median on Lee Boulevard. The driver of that vehicle died at the scene, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.

                  • MLB roundup: Holliday blast caps Yankees' stunning comeback
                    April 29, 2017

NEW YORK -- Matt Holliday hit a three-run homer with one out in the bottom of the 10th inning as the New York Yankees completed a stunning comeback from an eight-run deficit and pulled out a wild 14-11 victory over the Baltimore Orioles on Friday night.

After Aaron Hicks and Kyle Higashioka drew walks against Jayson Aquino (1-1), Chase Headley struck out. On the next pitch, Holliday drove a breaking ball over the center-field wall to give the Yankees their 13th win in the last 16 games.

Starlin Castro hit a game-tying two-run homer off Balitmore's Brad Brach in the ninth. Aaron Judge homered twice to start the comeback for the Yankees, who trailed 9-1 after Mark Trumbo's sixth-inning grand slam off Bryan Mitchell.

Jacoby Ellsbury hit his first career grand slam in the seventh off Vidal Nuno to pull the Yankees to 11-8. Before Baltimore blew the game, Manny Machado hit a two-run double and a 470-foot homer off CC Sabathia. Wellington Castillo also hit a two-run homer.

                    Mets 7, Nationals 5

WASHINGTON -- Travis d'Arnaud hit two homers and drove in a career-high five runs and Jacob deGrom fanned 12 batters in seven innings as New York beat Washington.

The Mets snapped a six-game losing streak and cooled off the first-place Nationals, who had won 10 of their previous 11 games. The win spoiled a two-homer night for Washington's Ryan Zimmerman, who had three RBIs.

A right-hander from Florida, deGrom (1-1) allowed three runs and six hits while fanning at least 10 batters for the 13th time in his career. He struck out 10 Washington batters on April 22.

                    Red Sox 5, Cubs 4

BOSTON -- Slumbering Boston erupted for five runs off Jake Arrieta in the first inning and held on for an interleague victory over the Chicago Cubs.

On a night that featured the return to Boston of Chicago general manager Theo Epstein and former Red Sox pitchers Jon Lester, John Lackey and Koji Uehara, rookie Andrew Benintendi homered to start the five-run assault against Arrieta. The right-hander lasted 4 1/3 innings and saw his 10-game April winning streak snapped.

Drew Pomeranz pitched six innings, allowing solo homers to Kris Bryant and Albert Almora Jr. before leaving with a 5-2 lead. Relievers Robby Scott and Joe Kelly each allowed a run (Kelly wild-pitched home the first run allowed in Scott's career), but Fernando Abad struck out two men with first and second and one out in the eighth and ended the inning with Kyle Schwarber's fourth strikeout of the game.

                    White Sox 7, Tigers 3

DETROIT -- Geovany Soto smacked a go-ahead, two-run single in the eighth inning and Chicago, aided by Detroit third baseman Nick Castellanos' three errors, won its fifth straight.

Soto's two-out hit made a winner of Anthony Swarzak, who tossed two innings of scoreless relief. Todd Frazier, Avisail Garcia and Tim Anderson homered for the White Sox. Garcia, the American League's leading hitter, had three hits, two runs and two RBIs.

Chicago starter Mike Pelfrey, released by the Tigers at the end of spring training, allowed three runs on six hits in 4 2/3 innings. Justin Upton had a two-run single for the Tigers, who have lost three straight.

                    Mariners 3, Indians 1

CLEVELAND -- Robinson Cano and Ben Gamel each homered and Ariel Miranda gave up one run and two hits in 5 1/3 innings as Seattle beat Cleveland.

Miranda struck out seven and walked two in his first career appearance against Cleveland. The only run he gave up came on a home run by Jose Ramirez in the fourth inning.

Indians starter Carlos Carrasco pitched eight innings, allowing three runs and six hits with seven strikeouts. The three runs he gave up came on the two Seattle home runs.

                    Pirates 12, Marlins 2

MIAMI -- Pittsburgh produced an eight-run second inning to rout Miami at Marlins Park.

Francisco Cervelli provided the biggest blow of the inning with a three-run, line-drive triple that went under the glove of sliding left fielder Marcell Ozuna. It was just the 11th triple of Cervelli's 10-year big-league career.

Jordy Mercer, Josh Harrison and Andrew McCutchen each drove in two runs to lead the Pirates. Pittsburgh rookie second baseman Gift Ngoepe, the first native of the African continent in the majors, went 3-for-3 and is batting .800 (4-for-5) in two games.

                    Rays 7, Blue Jays 4

TORONTO -- Tampa Bay hit three home runs in a four-run eighth inning, capped by a two-run blast by Logan Morrison to defeat Toronto.

Corey Dickerson and Evan Longoria also homered for Tampa Bay in the eighth and Derek Norris added a homer in the ninth. Jason Grilli (1-3) replaced Blue Jays starter Stroman with one out in the eighth and gave up Longoria's fourth homer to tie the game at 3. After Brad Miller walked, Dominic Leone replaced Grilli with two out and gave up Morrison's fifth homer.

Kevin Pillar had four hits, including a homer, for the Blue Jays, who have lost three in a row. Stroman allowed five hits, two walks and two runs and had nine strikeouts in 7 1/3 innings.

                    Astros 9, Athletics 4

HOUSTON -- Houston right-hander Charlie Morton delivered a career-best strikeout performance and rode the support of multi-hit games from Yuli Gurriel and Evan Gattis to a victory over Oakland at Minute Maid Park.

Morton (2-2) worked a season-high seven innings and recorded a career-high 12 strikeouts. He allowed five hits and four runs, all coming via two home runs from Athletics left fielder Khris Davis, who posted his 13th career multi-homer game.

Gurriel and Gattis both finished 3-for-4 with two RBIs. Gurriel, who clubbed his second homer in the seventh inning, also scored twice and finished a triple shy of the cycle. Houston finished 7-for-14 with runners in scoring position. Jharel Cotton (2-3) allowed six runs (three earned) on 10 hits and one walk over 4 1/3 innings.

                    Twins 6, Royals 4

KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- Miguel Sano homered, doubled and drove in four runs as Minnesota rallied to beat Kansas City.

The Royals have lost eight straight games. The last time they had a longer losing streak was April 2012 when they lost 12 in a row.

Sano's two-run double off Joakim Soria (0-1) tied it in the ninth. Joe Mauer followed with a two-run double to put the Twins up. The inning included an Eddie Rosario single, extending his hitting streak to 11 games. Craig Breslow (1-0) got the victory, retiring the only batter he faced in the eighth inning, and Brandon Kintzler worked the ninth to pick up his sixth save.

                    Braves 10, Brewers 8

MILWAUKEE -- Freddie Freeman hit a two-run homer in the ninth inning in Atlanta's victory over Milwaukee at Miller Park.

Ryan Braun, Orlando Arcia and Domingo Santana all homered for Milwaukee, but the Brewers blew a pair of four-run leads. Chase Anderson gave up a season-high four runs on four hits and three walks with two strikeouts over seven innings for the Brewers, who had won three straight.

Atlanta got five innings out of Bartolo Colon, who gave up six runs on 10 hits and two walks while striking out five. A two-run double by Keon Broxton and Arcia's three-run shot put the Brewers up 4-0 in the second.

                    Cardinals 7, Reds 5

ST. LOUIS -- For the first time since Opening Night, St. Louis owns a winning record. Six different players knocked in runs and Lance Lynn worked six solid innings to win his third straight start the Cardinals held off Cincinnati at Busch Stadium.

Lynn (3-1) allowed six hits and a run, walking two and striking out five in his 101-pitch effort. His last pitch walked Devin Mesoraco to fill the bases, but Yadier Molina bailed Lynn out of the jam with a pickoff of Eugenio Suarez at third as Suarez apparently thought time was called and was a step off the bag when tagged by Jedd Gyorko.

The Cardinals then scored three in their half of the sixth for a 6-1 lead, driving starter Tim Adleman (0-1) out of the game. Gyorko walloped his fourth homer, Randal Grichuk's single off reliever Blake Wood plated Stephen Piscotty and pinch-hitter Matt Adams added a sacrifice fly.

                    Angels 6, Rangers 3

ARLINGTON, Texas -- Albert Pujols knocked in the winning runs in Los Angeles victory over Texas at Globe Life Park with a no-doubt three-run homer off reliever Jeremy Jeffress in the eighth inning.

It was Pujols' third homer of the season and the three RBIs vaulted him past Rafael Palmeiro and Ken Griffey Jr. into 15th on the major league career RBI list.

The Rangers worked around Mike Trout, who homered in the sixth, with a walk to bring Pujols up with one out. The Angels made the Rangers pay. The Angels scored all six of their runs via home runs.

                    Rockies 3, Diamondbacks 1

PHOENIX -- Kyle Freeland shut down Arizona's potent attack as Colorado edged the Diamondbacks.

Freeland gave up just one run and six hits in six innings. He walked two and struck out two. By winning, the Rockies (15-9) moved back into first place in the NL West, a half-game ahead of the D-backs (15-10).

For the Diamondbacks, Robbie Ray also was effective, allowing three runs and five hits. Ray struck out nine and walked three. The Rockies' Trevor Story hit a solo homer, his fifth homer of the season, off Ray. Greg Holland pitched a scoreless ninth inning to get his 10th save.

                    Giants 4, Padres 3

SAN FRANCISCO -- Rookie shortstop Christian Arroyo hit reliever Ryan Buchter's second pitch for a tiebreaking home run in the eighth inning Friday night, lifting San Francisco to a 4-3 victory over San Diego in the opener of a three-game series.

Right-hander Jeff Samardzija and two relievers combined on a five-hitter, delivering the Giants their third one-run win in five games on their current homestand.

The Giants' win came despite Padres third baseman Ryan Schimpf's third consecutive game with a home run, a two-run shot in a three-run fifth inning off Samardzija.

                      • LEADING OFF: Strasburg back with another baby, Greinke sharp
                        April 28, 2017

A look at what's happening all around the majors Saturday:

                        DADDY'S TURN

Stephen Strasburg is set to pitch on extra rest for Washington after spending time on the paternity list for the birth of his second daughter. Strasburg (2-0, 2.89 ERA) missed a scheduled start at Colorado to be with his wife, Rachel, but returns in time to face the ailing Mets, who put outfielder Yoenis Cespedes on the 10-day disabled list Friday because of a strained left hamstring. Zack Wheeler (1-2, 5.40) is up for New York.

                        ZACK IS BACK

Arizona's Zack Greinke (2-2, 2.93) has come back strong after a disappointing 2016, a trend he'll try to extend against Colorado. The 33-year-old struck out 11 in six innings during his last start and has 31 strikeouts and six walks over 30 2/3 innings this season despite losing almost 2 mph off his fastball from last year's average, according to Statcast. Tyler Anderson (1-3, 7.11) is up for the Rockies.

                        HOMECOMING

The Cubs are playing in Boston this weekend, bringing Chicago President of Baseball Operations Theo Epstein back to Fenway Park for the first time since he left the Red Sox in 2012. The Boston native has helped end lengthy championship droughts in both cities and said Friday he considers himself lucky to feel like a native in two places. Epstein said he went for a jog through his old stomping grounds Thursday and got a silent high-five from a stranger. ''Made me feel welcomed back, which is a good feeling,'' Epstein said.

                        GETTING CLOSER

Baltimore left-hander Zach Britton, who hasn't pitched since April 14 because of a strained forearm, could be activated Sunday or Tuesday, according to manager Buck Showalter.

                        BRIEF ABSENCE

Seattle expects to have Nelson Cruz back in the lineup, a day after he was scratched with a tight left hamstring. The 36-year-old was available to pinch hit Friday. He entered the day leading the Mariners with five homers and 19 RBIs. Yovani Gallardo (1-2, 4.84) is to pitch for Seattle against Cleveland's Danny Salazar (1-2, 4.37).

                        • Saturday’s six-pack

                          — Clippers 98, Jazz 93— Game 7 is in Staples Center Sunday afternoon.

                          — Boston eliminated the Bulls, Wizards ousted the Hawks, both on the road.

                          — Blues 2, Predators 1— Nashville’s first loss in six playoff games this spring.

                          — Oilers 2, Ducks 1— Edmonton wins first two series games, both on the road.

                          — Arizona P Shelby Miller tore his UCL, is done for the year.

                          — Larry Bird stepped down from running the Pacers Friday; playing the game and running a franchise are two different skills.

                          *****************************

Saturday’s List of 13: Random stuff with the weekend here……..

                          13) Apparently our politicians make a boatload of money; I’ve heard of three groups involved with buying the Miami Marlins— one includes Jeb Bush, one includes Ivanka Trump’s brother-in-law and another one involving Mitt Romney’s son.

Must be nice to be rich.

                          12) Florida State’s Dalvin Cook finally got drafted by the Vikings with the #41 pick; apparently there are concerns about some of his friends, who he hangs out with.

With lot of players, the concerns aren’t about during the season, it is about the off-season, when their free time combined with having a lot of money can turn into problems. Hopefully things will work out of the best for Cook— he’s an excellent player.

From watching the Showtime show on Florida State football last fall, Cook also seemed like a good kid.

                          11) With the #48 pick, the Bengals took Oklahoma RB Joe Mixon, who dropped in the draft because he broke his girlfriend’s jaw (on camera) three years ago. It was reported Friday nite that only four teams considered drafting Mixon.

                          10) Chicago Bears beat the 49ers 26-6 last December, which is why they had the #3 pick, not the #2 pick in the draft. That win cost them two draft picks, the picks they sent to SF to switch spots Thursday night.

                          9) Bronx 14, Baltimore 11 (10)— Orioles led 11-4 in the middle of the 7th inning. These teams are now tied for first place in the AL East.

                          8) It is April 29 and the White Sox are in first place in the AL Central. Surprising.

                          7) Mets are 9-13; Syndergaard is hurt, Cespedes is hurt. Been a rough month.

                          6) There are 2.5 games separating first and last place in the NL Central.

                          5) Jason Terry is a substitute guard for the Bucks; he’s played 17 years in the NBA. Last summer, he interviewed for the vacant UAB head coaching job. I’m guessing he would’ve had to take a pay cut if UAB hired him.

                          4) If I ever write a book, one of the chapters will be “Baseball players get hurt a lot.”

                          3) I have a team in a 16-team fantasy baseball league; 25 guys on a team, can have minor leaguers on the roster.

As I type this this, there are 42 players on the DL, only 3.5 weeks into the season, and thats not counting the guys who got cut because they might be out for the year or most of the year.

                          2) Was watching the Toronto-Milwaukee NBA game Thursday night; was cool to see players from the Milwaukee Brewers watching the game together in a suite in the arena. Players live together for 7-8 months; bonding events like this one must make the season more fun.

1— This is old news, but bears reporting: St Peter’s went 10-0 vs spread in their MAAC road games this past winter. Very hard to do that; they didn’t cover either of their games in the MAAC tournament, but they finished the season 23-13 with the #34 experience team in the country.
