BOSTON (AP) Luis Severino allowed three hits in seven innings of shutout ball and Aaron Judge celebrated his 25th birthday with a two-run homer and spectacular catch, carrying the surging New York Yankees to a 3-1 victory over the Boston Red Sox on Wednesday night in the longtime rivals' first meeting this season.

It was the 11th win in 14 games for the Yankees after they opened the season 1-4.

Severino (2-1) struck out six and walked two, posting his third straight strong start. Dellin Betances worked a perfect eighth and Aroldis Chapman got three outs for his fifth save despite giving up a run.

AL Cy Young Award winner Rick Porcello (1-3) lost his third straight start, giving up three runs - two earned - in 6 2/3 innings. He didn't lose consecutive starts last season.

    PIRATES 6, CUBS 5

PITTSBURGH (AP) - Gift Ngoepe, the first player from Africa to reach the major leagues, singled in his first plate appearance and Josh Harrison hit a leadoff homer to lead Pittsburgh past Chicago.

Ngoepe was recalled from Triple-A Indianapolis and entered in the fourth inning as part of a double switch. He finished 1 for 2 with a walk. The 27-year-old South African, who signed with the Pirates in 2008, led off the fourth with a hit off Cubs ace Jon Lester (0-1). The left-hander was tagged for six runs - five earned - and 10 hits in 5 2/3 innings.

Josh Bell also homered off Lester.

Anthony Rizzo homered and drove in four runs for the Cubs, who lost for just the second time in eight games. The Pirates won for the third time in nine games.

Wade LeBlanc (1-0) pitched 1 1/3 scoreless innings in relief of rookie Tyler Glasnow. Tony Watson got four outs for his seventh save in as many chances.

    MARINERS 8, TIGERS 0

DETROIT (AP) - James Paxton struck out nine in seven outstanding innings, and Nelson Cruz and Guillermo Heredia homered to lift Seattle over Detroit.

Paxton (3-0) allowed four hits and a walk in a dominant performance against a Tigers team that had scored 32 runs over its previous two games. It was just what the Mariners needed after losing 19-9 on Tuesday and putting right-hander Felix Hernandez on the disabled list before Wednesday's game.

Paxton has held the opposition scoreless in four of his five starts this season. He lowered his ERA to 1.39.

Daniel Norris (1-2) allowed four runs and nine hits in four-plus innings. It was his second straight game allowing at least four earned runs after he went 21 consecutive starts yielding three or fewer.

    BREWERS 9, REDS 4

MILWAUKEE (AP) - Eric Thames scored twice before leaving with an injury and Orlando Arcia homered and had three RBIs to help Milwaukee beat Cincinnati for a three-game sweep.

Ryan Braun had a two-run double and a single off Reds starter Rookie Davis (0-1). Jett Bandy had three hits and two RBIs as the Brewers improved to 6-1 against the Reds this season.

Wily Peralta (4-1) went five-plus innings for the win, allowing four runs and eight hits.

Thames, who leads the majors with 11 homers, appeared to be favoring his left hamstring as he stretched before the Reds batted in the eighth. He left the game but said afterward he was fine and will be back in the lineup Friday night against Atlanta.

Cincinnati hit four solo homers during its seventh loss in eight games. Scott Schebler went deep twice, and Joey Votto and Adam Duvall also connected.

    WHITE SOX 5, ROYALS 2

CHICAGO (AP) - Avisail Garcia and Leury Garcia homered to back run-starved starter Jose Quintana, and Chicago defeated Kansas City to complete a three-game sweep.

Chicago won its fourth straight, while Kansas City dropped every game on a seven-game trip.

Quintana (1-4) got the offensive support he needed after receiving only four runs in his first four starts combined. The left-hander had a season-high 10 strikeouts in six innings. He allowed five hits and two runs - one earned.

Avisail Garcia's two-run homer in the sixth gave the White Sox a 4-2 lead. Jose Abreu and Todd Frazier had consecutive two-out RBI doubles in the first.

Abreu left the game with a mild right hip flexor strain after flubbing a slow grounder in the fifth.

David Robertson converted his fifth save in five tries.

Nathan Karns (0-2) took the loss, allowing four runs in six innings.

    INDIANS 7, ASTROS 6

CLEVELAND (AP) - Michael Brantley drove in three runs as Cleveland topped Houston.

Brantley, who played in only 11 games last season after having two operations on his left shoulder, had an RBI double in a three-run first inning and added a two-run single in the fifth.

Carlos Santana had a two-run double in the sixth for the Indians, who have won six of eight.

Trevor Bauer (2-2) allowed four runs in six innings and won his second straight start despite giving up two-run homers to Evan Gattis and Brian McCann.

Andrew Miller worked out of a bases-loaded jam in the seventh by striking out Carlos Correa and McCann. Cody Allen got four outs for his fourth save.

Lance McCullers (2-1) gave up five runs in five innings.

    NATIONALS 11, ROCKIES 4

DENVER (AP) - Trea Turner nearly hit for the cycle for a second straight night, finishing a triple shy, and Bryce Harper had four more hits to raise his batting average to .432 as Washington routed Colorado.

Turner lined one of three Washington homers, with Ryan Zimmerman and Daniel Murphy also going deep, to help the Nationals improve to 8-1 on their 10-game trip.

Tanner Roark (3-0) worked his way out of several jams and threw five solid innings.

Never quite settling in on a cool night, Tyler Chatwood (2-3) gave up five runs in five innings.

    PHILLIES 7, MARLINS 4

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Maikel Franco hit his second grand slam of the month, helping Philadelphia beat Miami for its fifth straight win.

Franco connected off Wei-Yen Chen (2-1) in the third inning for a 4-2 lead. Freddy Galvis hit a solo shot for the Phillies, and Michael Saunders added a two-run homer in the eighth.

Vince Velasquez (1-2) went 6 1/3 innings for his first win since last July and lowered his ERA to 6.33.

Martin Prado homered for the Marlins.

    BRAVES 8, METS 2

NEW YORK (AP) - Julio Teheran stifled the Mets into the seventh inning, Robert Gsellman staggered through a five-run first and Atlanta handed New York its fifth straight loss.

The Braves ended a six-game skid behind 6 1/3 innings of two-run ball from Teheran (2-1). The right-hander allowed four hits, four walks and a pair of sacrifice flies while striking out four. He is 4-0 with a 0.91 ERA in his last seven starts against New York dating to June 21, 2015.

The ailing Mets got Yoenis Cespedes and Travis d'Arnaud back in the lineup but still dropped their ninth in 10 games.

Gsellman (0-2) allowed his first seven batters to reach in an exasperating first inning, including one on his own throwing error. The 23-year-old rookie gave up six runs, 10 hits and three walks over four-plus innings. His ERA climbed to 6.23.

Tyler Flowers had a three-run double in the first and matched his career high with four RBIs.

    ORIOLES 5, RAYS 4, 11 INNINGS

BALTIMORE (AP) - Seth Smith drew a bases-loaded walk from Danny Farquhar to force in the winning run with two outs in the 11th inning, and Baltimore rallied to beat Tampa Bay.

After the Rays scored a run in the top of the 11th, the Orioles answered against closer Alex Colome (0-1). Two singles and a walk loaded the bases for Jonathan Schoop, who hit a sacrifice fly. Ryan Flaherty walked to reload the bases, and Farquhar entered and issued a four-pitch walk to end a game that took 4 hours, 8 minutes.

Alec Asher (1-0) got the win despite giving up an RBI single to Jesus Sucre in the 11th.

Baltimore took two of three from Tampa Bay and has not lost a series this season.

Tim Beckham hit two home runs for the Rays, who rallied from an early three-run deficit to force extra innings.

    RANGERS 14, TWINS 3

ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) - Joey Gallo scored the tiebreaking run on a painful trip around the bases, Ryan Rua hit a grand slam and Texas avoided a series sweep by breaking it open late against Minnesota.

Rua's first career slam came in the eighth inning and Shin-Soo Choo, who had already tripled in the inning, added a three-run homer to cap the eight-run outburst.

Cole Hamels (2-0) allowed three runs over 6 2/3 innings.

Gallo was hit by a pitch leading off the sixth against Taylor Rogers (1-1). The young Rangers slugger scored on a wild pitch by another reliever to make it 3-2, and was struck on the back of the right shoulder by catcher Chris Gimenez's throw after the ball ricocheted hard off the brick backstop.

The Rangers set season highs for runs and hits (14). Leadoff man Delino DeShields reached base five times, stole two bags and scored three runs.

    • LEADING OFF: Sale vs Yanks; Thor vs Dickey; injuries pile up
      April 26, 2017

A look at what's happening around the majors Thursday:

      LOFTY NUMBERS

Chris Sale (1-1, 0.91 ERA) brings his impressive numbers against the Yankees to the mound when the Red Sox host New York in the finale of a series shortened by rain. The lefty is 4-1 with a 1.17 ERA in his career vs. the Yankees, the lowest ERA against them for any pitcher with at least 50 innings since earned runs became a stat in 1912. Right-hander Masahiro Tanaka (2-1, 6.00) goes for New York.

      THOR'S ORIGIN

The Mets acquired Noah Syndergaard from Toronto in December 2012 by trading away R.A. Dickey, that year's NL Cy Young Award winner, in a seven-player swap. Now the two pitchers will face each other for the first time when New York hosts Atlanta. Syndergaard (1-1, 1.73 ERA), who is 24, had just completed a season with Class A Lansing when the deal was consummated but has since emerged as the majors' hardest-throwing starter. The 42-year-old Dickey (1-2, 3.86) and his knuckleball are 50-54 with a 4.05 ERA following the trade, and this will be his first start at Citi Field since leaving the Mets. ''Polar differences right there,'' Braves manager Brian Snitker said. ''Both ends of the spectrum.'' The Mets have lost five straight and nine of 10.

      AILING STARS

Injuries are piling up for some top players around the majors. Houston second baseman Jose Altuve (left shoulder), White Sox slugger Jose Abreu (right hip) and Milwaukee first baseman Eric Thames (left hamstring) are among those to get banged up recently. Boston hopes second baseman Dustin Pedroia can return to the lineup Thursday after missing three games with a sore left knee. Seattle ace Felix Hernandez (right shoulder inflammation) and San Francisco leadoff hitter Denard Span (shoulder) went on the 10-day disabled list Wednesday.

      IMPRESSIVE ROOKIE

The surroundings don't seem to intimidate Rockies rookie Antonio Senzatela (3-0, 2.08 ERA), even when he's pitching at Coors Field. The 22-year-old right-hander from Venezuela is 2-0 with a 1.93 ERA at the hitter-friendly ballpark this season. He faces hot-hitting Bryce Harper and the Washington Nationals to close out a four-game series.

      URIAS ARRIVES

Young lefty Julio Urias returns to the majors and makes his first start of the season for the Dodgers in San Francisco. He might be up for good, too. ''We can now get Julio here, and he can be with us for the duration,'' manager Dave Roberts said. Los Angeles left the 20-year-old Urias in the minors at the start of the year to limit his workload. The prized pitcher was 5-2 with a 3.39 ERA in 77 big league innings last year.

      LET'S PLAY TWO

After getting rained out Wednesday, the Blue Jays and Cardinals play a day-night doubleheader to wrap up their interleague series in St. Louis. Cardinals right-hander Carlos Martinez is looking for his first win of the season - he is 0-3 with a 4.76 ERA in four starts.

        • Armadillo: Thursday's six-pack

ACC basketball has been re-configured for four years; here are cumulative standings:

Virginia 56-16 conference games, 7-4 NCAA games
          North Carolina 52-20, 14-3
          Duke 50-22, 9-3
          Louisville 48-18, 4-2 (only 3 years)
          Notre Dame 43-29, 7-3
          Syracuse 42-30, 5-2
          Miami 40-32, 2-2
          Florida State 37-35, 1-1
          Clemson 34-38, 0-0
          Pittsburgh 32-40, 1-2
          NC State 28-44, 3-2
          Georgia Tech 25-47, 0-0
          Virginia Tech 24-48, 0-1
          Wake Forest 22-50, 0-1
          Boston College 10-62, 0-0

          **********

Armadillo: Thursday's List of 13: Nobody asked me, but………

          13) Sometimes there are no good options, something I’m sure OKC Thunder coach Billy Donovan is thinking about now that his team was eliminated from the NBA Playoffs by the Houston Rockets in five very interesting games.

Fact #1: In the five games, Oklahoma City was +15 with Russell Westbrook on the floor, -58 when he was off the floor. Donovan tried very hard to find spots to rest Westbrook, but when he did, the team suffered.

Know-it-alls like myself suggested that Westbrook never come out of the game, but in the series, (Fact #2) Westbrook shot 14-49 in the 4th quarter- thats 28.6%, which is dismal.

He needed rest, he needed better teammates, and in the end, without those, they just were not gonna beat Houston, no matter what strategy Donovan used.

          12) I’m not always crazy about TNT’s Reggie Miller as an analyst, but thought he did an excellent job on the Game 5 Houston-OKC telecast— he stated a definitive opinion about playing/sitting Westbrook, said why he thought that way and then let the game unfold. Well done.

          11) Trea Turner hit for the cycle in Denver Tuesday nite, had seven RBI; he is the first player since Troy Tulowitzki in 2009 to hit for the cycle and also knock in 7+ runs in that game.

          10) I’m sure the organizers at the Zurich Classic are thrilled that Jordan Spieth is playing in their event in New Orleans this week; I’m not sure they’re thrilled that word got out that the reason that Spieth is playing is because he lost a bet with partner Ryan Palmer’s caddy.

          9) Miami Marlins are playing the Phillies this week, but the NFL bought up all the hotel rooms to Philly this week for their Draft, so the Marlins are staying in Wilmington, Delaware, which according to MapQuest, is 32.6 miles away.

          8) Michigan Wolverines are having spring football practice in Italy; I’m not sure why, but that has to be pretty expensive.

          7) Odd college basketball stat: over the last three years, Hofstra is 5-22 vs spread in CAA home games, which is awful; during same time, they’re 17-9-1 vs spread on CAA road, 9-1-1 as road underdogs the last two seasons.

          6) Kansas City Chiefs haven’t drafted a QB in the first round since Todd Blackledge in 1983.

          5) Big week for UNLV’s basketball program; they’ve bagged three excellent recruits, including a 5-star center, Brandon McCoy. Rebels will be back near the top of the Mountain West next winter, helped by Steve Fisher retiring as coach at San Diego State.

          4) A’s get good news; Kendall Graveman will be activated and pitch for Oakland Thursday in Anaheim against the Angels.

          3) Sounds like a group of 5+ investors, which includes Jeb Bush/Derek Jeter, are going to buy the Miami Marlins for $1.3B from hideous Jeffrey Loria, who won’t be missed.

Sounds like Jeb Bush won by losing; I’d rather own the Marlins than be President.

          2) NBA fined Houston Rockets’ owner Les Alexander $100,000 after he left his court side seat during live game action to yell at referee Bill Kennedy during Game 5 Tuesday nite.

When you look at how close fans are to the action in NBA games, it really is surprising that stuff like this doesn’t happen more often.

1— ESPN fired around 100 people this week, many of them people we’ve seen on TV for several years- tough day in the TV industry.

My question is this: How did they decide who they kept, and who they told to take a hike?

For the foreseeable future, every time I watch ESPN, I’ll be wondering why they kept the person on my TV screen instead of someone they fired. Human nature, I guess.

                  • Thursday's Diamond Notes
                    April 27, 2017

Hottest team: Angels (4-1 past five)

The Angels benefited from the loss of Athletics SP Sean Manaea (shoulder) due to injury, taking care of the A's by an 8-5 score to win their second straight game in as many nights. The Halos scratched back to within one game of .500 at 11-12, and they're 4-1 in their past five meetings with the Athletics. While the offense has come and gone for the Angels, pitching remains the team's strong suit. They're allowed an average of just 3.42 runs per game over the past 12 games, and they're giving up 3.5 runs per game in six meetings with the A's this season.

Coldest team Blue Jays (5-12 past 17)

The Blue Jays are showing some signs of life lately, alternating wins and losses over the past eight outings. However, they're rounding the corner and heading for home in April while yet to record back-to-back victories this season. Toronto is just 4-9 in their past 13 road games, and 3-8 in their past 11 road outings against a right-handed starter. They haven't had a lot of success in the second game of a series lately, either, going 1-5 in Game 2. While Toronto has been ice cold, they have their best chance at consecutive wins. They have won four straight trips to St. Louis, and six of the past eight meetings overall against the Cardinals.

Hottest pitcher: Chris Sale, White Sox (1-1, 0.91 ERA)

The victories haven't been flowing for Sale so far in Beantown, but the big-ticket item has been everything as advertised in the first month of his tenure in Boston. He has allowed just three earned runs, 15 hits and six walks while rolling up 42 strikeouts over 29 2/3 innings. In addition, opposing hitters have posted a weak .147 batting average against him while Sale has managed a 0.71 WHIP. He gets his first taste of the Boston-New York rivalry on Thursday night. While the Yankees are 7-0 in their past seven against left-handed starters, they're 1-4 in their past five trips to Boston. Since the start of the 2013 season Sale is 2-1 with a complete game, 1.29 ERA and 31 strikeouts over 28 innings against the Yankees with a .175 batting average.

Coldest pitcher: Matt Moore, Giants (1-3, 5.87 ERA)

The southpaw has just one quality start in four appearance so far this season. His only win came at home back on April 10 when he allowed one earned run with three hits, no walks and five strikeouts over eight innings against the Diamondbacks. He was knocked around by the Rockies in each of his past two outings, going 0-2 with a 10.24 ERA. His main issue has been failing to keep the ball in the park, coughing up five homers over his past three starts, including three long balls at Coors Field last Wednesday. He has been rather hittable, posting a 1.57 WHIP while striking out just 17 batters over 23 innings.

Biggest UNDER run: Red Sox (5-0-1 past six games)

The Red Sox offense has been listless over the past six outings, as they're averaging just 2.2 runs per game during the span. That will help the 'under' cash frequently, especially with a pitching staff like Boston limiting the opposition. Boston's pitching hasn't been the problem, giving up just 2.5 runs per game over the past six outings. Boston ranks fifth in the majors with a 3.49 ERA. They're in the midst of a series with the Yankees, a team with a 3.05 ERA, so 'under' results are likely to continue.

Biggest OVER run: Diamondbacks (5-1 past six games)

The 'over' cashed in spectacular fashion for Arizona on Wednesday, as the Padres erupted for five runs in the top of the ninth inning to push the total over as closer Fernando Rodney coughed up a two-run blew for his first blown save of the season. That's three straight over results against the Padres in this series, and five in the past six in Arizona. In fact the over is an impressive 10-2-1 in 13 games at home for Arizona. The Padres turn to veteran Jered Weaver, but they're 0-4 over his past four outings. The 'over' is 5-0 in San Diego's past five road games and 4-0-1 in their past five against a team wit ha winning mark. The over is 40-12-2 in Arizona's past 54 home games overall and 36-14-1 in their past 51 vs. RHP. Keep riding the wave and smash those Arizona overs.

Matchup to watch: Angels vs. Athletics

Kendall Graveman (shoulder) is back from the 10-day disabled list to start Thursday's game. However, he is expected to be on a pitch count, so that might bode well for the Halos. The A's are just 2-5 in Graveman's past seven road starts and 2-8 in his past 10 assignments against divisional foes. The Angels turn to Opening Day starter Ricky Nolasco. They have ripped off five victories over the past seven outings with Nolasco on the hill, and they're 15-5 in their past 20 games at the Big A when facing a team with a losing overall mark. The A's haven't had a lot of success in SoCal, losing five straight trips to Anaheim and picking up just one win in the past five meetings overall with the Halos.

Betcha didn’t know: Masahiro Tanaka held down the Red Sox in 2016, going 1-0 with a 1.83 ERA in three starts last season. Two of Boston's best hitters haven't had a lot of success against the import, as OF Mookie Betts has collected just three hits in 18 career at-bats (.167). SS Xander Bogaerts isn't much better at 6-for-27 (.222), while 1B Hanley Ramirez is just 2-for-13 overall against the starter. The good news is that Dustin Pedroia (knee) might be ready to return after a three-game absence. He is a career .304 hitter (7-for-23) with two doubles and a solo homer against the right-handed starter for the Pinstripes.

Biggest public favorite: Mets (-215) vs. Braves

Biggest public underdog: Athletics (+120) at Angels

Biggest line move: Mets (-175 to -215) vs. Braves

                          • MLB roundup: Nationals use 11-run inning to beat Rockies
                            April 27, 2017

BOSTON -- Masahiro Tanaka outdueled Chris Sale in a battle of aces, and the New York Yankees completed a two-game sweep of the Boston Red Sox with a 3-0 victory on Thursday night.

Tanaka (3-1) tossed a three-hitter to win a third consecutive start. It was the fifth complete game of his career and his first since 2015. He didn't walk anyone, and he struck out three in becoming the first Yankee to throw a complete-game shutout against Boston since Mike Mussina in 2002.

Tanaka retired the last 14 batters, good for 15 outs, and needed 97 pitches to complete his second career shutout. New York, which started the season 1-4, is 12-3 since.

Sale (1-2, 1.19 ERA), acquired by the Red Sox in a big offseason trade of major Boston prospects, continued to be the victim of non-support. He held the game close until the Yankees scored two in the ninth. He wound up charged with three runs (two earned) on eight hits with 10 strikeouts and no walks in eight-plus innings for his fourth straight double-digit strikeout game.

                            Nationals 16, Rockies 5

DENVER -- Washington erupted for 11 runs in the seventh inning and crushed Colorado with another stunning offensive display.

While winning the final three contests of a four-game series, the Nationals outscored the Rockies 42-21. The Colorado bullpen, which allowed 20 runs in the first 19 games, was torched for 26 runs in the past three contests.

Adam Eaton, Bryce Harper and Daniel Murphy homered for Washington, which had 19 hits Thursday and 47 in the past three games, including seven homers. Gio Gonzalez (3-0) gave up two runs and seven hits in 6 2/3 innings.

                            Cardinals 8, Blue Jays 4 (1st game, 11 innings)

ST. LOUIS -- Matt Carpenter walloped his first career grand slam with one out in the bottom of the 11th inning to give St. Louis the victory over Toronto in the first game of a day-night doubleheader.

Kolten Wong led off the 11th with a triple down the right-field line against Ryan Tepera. After Toronto gave intentional walks to Randal Grichuk and Dexter Fowler, Aledmys Diaz flew out to shallow left. But Carpenter unloaded on a 3-2 breaking ball from J.P. Howell.

Toronto held a two-run lead entering the bottom of the ninth and was one out away from winning its first series of the year. But Randal Grichuk belted a two-run homer off Roberto Osuna to force extra innings.

                            Cardinals 6, Blue Jays 4 (2nd game)

ST. LOUIS -- Scoring in each of the first four innings in the nightcap of a day-night doubleheader, St. Louis finished off a sweep of Toronto.

Dexter Fowler homered and went 3-for-4, Matt Adams and Greg Garcia each went 3-for-3, and Adam Wainwright picked up his second consecutive victory for the Cardinals. Wainwright (2-3) allowed nine hits and four runs in 6 1/3 innings, walking one and striking out four in his first outing past five innings this year.

Blue Jays rookie right-hander Casey Lawrence (0-3) was strafed for 10 hits and six runs in five innings in his second big league start, walking three and fanning one.

                            Diamondbacks 6, Padres 2

PHOENIX -- Chris Owings hit a pair of homers, and Arizona starter Taijuan Walker kept San Diego in check.

Owings hit solo homers in consecutive at-bats. His shot in the third inning tied the game 1-1, and his next in the fourth made it 4-1. In between, Yasmany Tomas hit a two-run blast in the fourth.

Walker matched a career high with 11 strikeouts while allowing two runs and four hits in eight innings. J.J. Hoover pitched a scoreless ninth for Arizona, which leads Colorado by one-half game.

                            Indians 4, Astros 3

CLEVELAND -- Francisco Lindor's two-out, two-run homer in the seventh inning lifted Cleveland over Houston.

With the Indians trailing 3-2 and Yan Gomes, who had walked, on first, Lindor pounded a 2-0 pitch from Chris Devenski (1-1) over the wall in center field. Lindor's sixth home run was estimated at 456 feet.

Cleveland's Corey Kluber (3-1) struck out 10 in seven innings. He allowed three runs on eight hits and four walks. Bryan Shaw retired the side in order in the eighth, and Cody Allen pitched around three hits in the ninth to earn his fifth save.

                            Angels 2, Athletics 1

ANAHEIM, Calif. -- Albert Pujols and C.J. Cron drove in runs in the first inning, and starter Ricky Nolasco made it stand up as Los Angeles swept Oakland.

Nolasco (2-2) gave up one run on three hits and two walks in 5 2/3 innings to earn his second win in a row. Blake Parker got the final out in the sixth, and David Hernandez, Jose Alvarez and Bud Norris (fourth save) combined to pitch the final three innings.

Oakland's Kendall Graveman (2-1) made his first start since April 14, having recovered from a strained right shoulder. After a bumpy first inning, Graveman settled in and pitched well, allowing two runs and six hits without walking a batter in six innings.

                            Dodgers 5, Giants 1 (10 innings)

SAN FRANCISCO -- Chase Utley tagged up and scored on a foul out to the first baseman as part of a four-run 10th inning as Los Angeles defeated San Francisco.

Enrique Hernandez hit a high pop fly down the right-field line, which Giants first baseman Buster Posey was able to catch after bobbling. Utley tagged and slid home safely on what was scored a sacrifice fly.

Kenley Jansen (1-0), who pitched a scoreless ninth inning, got the win for the Dodgers. Chris Hatcher retired San Francisco in the bottom of the 10th.

                            Phillies 3, Marlins 2

PHILADELPHIA -- Starter Jeremy Hellickson and the bullpen helped Philadelphia win its sixth game in a row.

Hellickson (4-0) outdueled Miami's Edinson Volquez (0-3) to stay undefeated. Hellickson allowed one run on seven hits and struck out only one batter against zero walks, lowering his ERA to 1.80 and his WHIP to 0.80.

The Phillies tallied a run in the first thanks to a Dee Gordon throwing error. They scored again in the third on an Odubel Herrera RBI groundout to take a 2-0 lead.

                            Mariners 2, Tigers 1

DETROIT -- Ben Gamel smacked a go-ahead RBI single in the top of the ninth as Seattle defeated Detroit.

Gamel knocked in Kyle Seager from second base after Seager doubled off reliever Francisco Rodriguez (1-2). Seager knocked in the Mariners' other run with a single in the sixth.

Reliever Tony Zych (1-0) recorded his second major league win with 1 2/3 innings of scoreless relief. Edwin Diaz collected his third save.

                            Braves 7, Mets 5

NEW YORK -- Kurt Suzuki's three-run homer capped a four-run fifth inning as Atlanta swept the two-game series versus New York.

The Braves never trailed in their consecutive wins over the Mets, who finished 1-8 on their longest homestand of the first half.

Worse yet for New York, its injury-wracked roster took two more hits when ace right-hander Noah Syndergaard was scratched hours before first pitch because of biceps tendinitis and left fielder Yoenis Cespedes exited in the fourth inning after aggravating a left hamstring injury.

                            • Armadillo: Friday's six-pack

                              — Spurs ousted Memphis, Raptors eliminate the Bucks, both in six games.

                              — Detroit scored 19 runs Tuesday; they scored 0-1 runs the next two days.

                              — Mets are 8-13; Cespedes/Syndergaard are both hurt now. No bueno.

                              — If I ever write a book, one of the chapters will be “Baseball players get hurt a lot.”

                              — Baltimore is 14-6, with a run differential of +9. Texas is +11; their record is 10-12.

                              — I’m still amazed that no one drafted Florida State RB Dalvin Cook; young man is a FOOTBALL PLAYER.

                              **********

Armadillo: Running Diary of the 2017 NFL Draft……..

7:41: Trying to decide which channel to watch the draft on; NFL Network or ESPN, assuming ESPN has enough employees left to do live programming.

Seeing how I boycotted Chris Berman for the last 20 years or so, since he and Steve Young took delight in mocking the Rams when they sucked in the 90’s, I’ll give post-Berman ESPN the first shot. Plus, Deion Sanders is on NFL Network; can’t stand him.

7:46: NFL is lucky as hell; when they foolishly put a Super Bowl in New Jersey a few years ag0, they missed a big snowstorm by a day. Tonight, on April 27, it is 74 degrees in Philly. Unusual; they just as easily could’ve gotten cruddy weather- Phillies got rained out at home two nites ago.

7:53: NFL started moving the draft a few years ago, when Radio City Music Hall was unavailable for draft weekend- they’ve struck gold. Now 14 cities want to host the draft- you know it’ll be in LA when the Rams’ new stadium is finished. I’m guessing Dallas will get it soon, too.

8:07: Roger Goodell makes $32M a year or so to be NFL’s Commish; he can take getting booed. Philly fans oblige by booing the hell out of him. Weird thing is, he isn’t a lawyer. Thought you had to be a lawyer to be a commish.

Goodell family trivia: When Robert Kennedy was assassinated in 1968, the man who replaced him as a US Senator from New York was Charles Goodell, Roger’s father.

8:10: Mel Kiper Jr, draft expert, touts Myles Garrett as a smart #1 pick for Cleveland, who is on the clock. Jon Gruden touts LSU safety Jamal Adams as the #1 pick. Gruden insists that Garrett isn’t the best player in this draft and he shows video evidence why, citing inconsistent effort.

Earlier this week, former Cowboys’ exec Gil Brandt tweeted that only 14.5 of Garrett’s 31 sacks in college came against SEC competition.

8:14: Browns take Garrett, the 5th SEC player taken #1 in the last 11 drafts. Cleveland also has the #12 pick in this round, so we’ll hear from them again in a few hours.

8:17: 49ers/Bears flip-flop the #2/#3 picks; looks like John Lynch will be trying to stockpile some draft picks in his first draft running the 49ers.

8:22: Bears take QB Mitchell Trubisky, meaning he gets to freeze his butt off for the next 10 Decembers in Chicago. Mike Glennon (3 years, $45M in Chicago) must be happier than hell; he signed with the Bears as a free agent, now it looks like he’ll be moving along again in a year or two.

The film of Trubisky that Gruden shows isn’t flattering; Trey Wingo points out that the only North Carolina QB to ever start an NFL game is TJ Yates. Trubisky started only 13 games at UNC, but then again, he isn’t going to start for a while.

8:29: 49ers take DE Solomon Thomas from Stanford; Lynch was a great DB, so it makes sense that his first draft pick is a defensive end. The young man once lived in Australia for five years; his first favorite sport was swimming.

49ers gave up 2,600 yards rushing last year; unlike Trubisky, Moore will play right away.

8:35: Jacksonville picks in the top 5 for the 6th year n a row; they take Leonard Fournette from LSU, who missed five games last year, including one by choice. He didn’t seem to be great with catching balls out of the backfield.

College coaches use the draft to be seen on TV: Stanford’s David Shaw is working on NFL Network, Ed Orgeron, Nick Saban, Dabo Swinney, Brian Kelly are all in Philly with their players. Recruiting season in college football is 365/12/7/24- tonite is no exception.

Fournette’s agent, by the way, is Jay Z.

8:43: Tennessee, with one of the picks acquired in the Jared Goff trade, selects WR Corey Davis of Western Michigan, the only D-I team to offer him a scholarship out of high school.

49ers, by the way, got two extra draft picks from the Bears for dropping from #2 to #3.

8:51: Jets draft LSU safety Jamal Adams; Todd Bowles was a DB when he played, so this makes perfect sense. Gruden loves Adams- this is a good pick. Jets allowed 30 TDs LY, had only eight INT’s. Louis Riddick praises Adams’ constant effort.

I would love to know how many kids get drafted by the Jets/Giants but aren’t aware that the teams play in New Jersey, not New York. There have to be at least one or two.

Adams’ father is George Adams, who played RB for the Giants 30 years ago, so we know he knows the Jets play in the Garden State.

Since 1987, Adams family is 8th father/son combo who were both drafted in the first round. Two of those eight are Mannings.

9:00: Chargers are on the clock; it still saddens me that they left San Diego, screwing their loyal fans for no decent reason, other than abject greed. They’re not the only ones who have done it, but they seem to be the team who left a pretty good situation to be a tenant in Los Angeles.

Chargers took WR Mike Williams instead of his college teammate, Deshaun Watson. Philip Rivers had to like this pick. Williams comes from a hometown of 170 people.

9:04: Carolina takes Christian McCaffrey from Stanford; his dad played for the Broncos, his granddad was once the fastest man in the world.

Fallout of this: Fournette/McCaffrey both skipped their bowl game to avoid injury, and they both benefitted with a solid draft position— will that makes this an increasing trend this fall?

Four of the first eight players taken went to LSU or Stanford.

9:12: Bengals take WR John Ross from Washington, whose pee-wee coach as a kid was Snoop Dawg (seriously). Ross is really, really fast, but he is going to play a decent amount of games in cold weather and he has had injury issues (shoulder. knee). Has he ever played in cold weather?

9:15: Chiefs trade up to the #10 spot in the draft; Buffalo trades down, but they get an extra #1 pick next year, to drop down 17 spots— KC has to be taking a QB, right?

9:18: ESPN fires Andy Katz, Ed Werder, Jayson Stark, but we’re supposed to watch the 6:00 SportsCenter because Ice Cube plays dominos with Jemele Hill? Oy.

9:20: Chiefs take Texas Tech QB Patrick Mahomes, whose dad pitched in the big leagues; he is the first QB taken in the first round by the Chiefs since Todd Blackledge, in 1983.

Gruden is tight with Andy Reid (Packer assistants together in early 90’s); he compares Mahomes to Brett Favre— seriously, he did.

As ESPN goes to commercial, Deshaun Watson doesn’t look very happy. Hey, Thurman Thomas once sat in a diner for half a day waiting to be drafted- his career turned out pretty well.

9:28: Saints take a DB from Ohio State that Jon Gruden doesn’t like that much. I like it when there is criticism; not every player is the greatest player ever.

Random rant: I bought a MacBook Pro last August; the keyboard sucks, with G and T keys often sticking. For $1,300, thought I’d get a decent keyboard. Otherwise, the laptop is fine.

9:35: Houston Texans traded up to draft Deshaun Watson, who won a lot of football games in college, but did throw 30 INT’s over the last two years, most in the whole country in I-A.

Texans have started 8 QB’s in three years under Bill O’Brien (QB guru). What makes this guy such a guru if he couldn’t make any of those eight QB’s serviceable players?

9:43: Arizona is on the clock; Carson Palmer turns 38 in December, so of course, they take a linebacker from Temple, where Bruce Arians was once the head coach. Local Philly fans eat up the local kid makes good angle.

Good news for Drew Stanton, Arizona’s current backup QB.

9:52: Hometown Eagles are on the clock: Gruden says they have to draft a CB. The crowd of roughly 70,000 is VERY EXCITED.

Eagles select Derek Barnett, a DE from Tennessee. He had more sacks in college than Reggie White— this is the pick Philly got from the Vikings for Sam Bradford. Eagle fans do not seem real happy, but unlike Myles Garrett, 29 of his 33 career sacks were in SEC games.

10:00: Colts take S Malik Hooker, who wanted to play basketball at Pitt, but Jamie Dixon never offered him, so he went to play football at Ohio State.

Louis Riddick says he needs to tackle better, Gruden says he has been hurt too much and hasn’t played enough football to be taken this high- he only played two years of HS football.

10:07: I don’t care if people boo Goodell, he seems like a good man. When the Ravens take a CB from Alabama, a 14-year old Make-a-Wish kid announces the pick, and Goodell introduces the young man. Then again, having the kid there means Goodell doesn’t get booed.

Mel Kiper’s five best available players are all SEC players, three from Alabama.

Random fact: Joe Flacco’s cap hit this year is $24.55M, highest in the NFL.

10:16: Redskins take Jonathan Allen, DE from Alabama, a pick applauded by the ESPN panel. Gruden is shocked he was available at #17, but apparently he has injury issues (shoulder).

10:20: “Who knows what they’re going to do?” Gruden on the Titans, who are up next.

Tennessee takes Adoree Jackson, a CB from USC who also played some WR for the Trojans and is a return threat. Jackson apparently also runs track; curious to see if that continues.

This will all be a lot more fun tomorrow, when the Rams have picks. Should’ve hung a #16 Rams jersey in the room tonight as a reminder of why we don’t have a pick in the first round.

10:27: Last year was Tampa Bay’s first winning season since 2010, but they didn’t make the playoffs. They took OJ Howard, a TE from Alabama, who should help open up their offense. He is Alabama’s 20th #1 draft pick since 2010, nine more than any other school.

Bucs are on Hard Knocks this summer; their CB Brett Grimes is married to a woman who is a real character— she is very outspoken on social media and doesn’t hold back. If HBO gets a mike on her, Hard Knocks will be highly entertaining TV.

10:31: First offensive lineman comes off the board at #20, Garrett Bolles to Denver; this kid was kicked out of five schools. Five. He brought his little baby up on stage with him.

Apparently the kid’s lacrosse coach wound up getting thru to him and straightening him out. Hopefully Mr Bolles will send that man a nice gift- he is also a 25-year old rookie, by the way. Denver really needed a good offensive lineman.

This is the latest the draft has ever gone before an offensive lineman was selected.

10:40: Detroit Lions take Jarrad Davis, a LB from Florida, who gets high marks for having good character. Was fun to hear that. Gruden thinks he will start as a rookie.

10:42: Dolphins take a kid from Missouri who has someone dressed as a Star Wars character sitting behind him in his house.

Wonder if Missouri alums are happy with their move to the SEC? I’m guessing the school’s accountants are happy; the SEC is a freakin’ gold mine, but on the field/court, Mizzou has mostly sucked in the SEC.

10:46: How in God’s name is Dalvin Cook still available? The Florida State RB is a FOOTBALL PLAYER.

Giants take a tight end from Ole Miss, further proof that Eli Manning runs the franchise.

10:54: Oakland/Las Vegas Raiders take a CB from Ohio State who, according to Raiders’ tradition, was accused of sexual assault recently. Wouldn’t be the Raiders if they took a solid citizen, though the young man hasn’t been charged with any crime and he strongly denies the accusation. Hopefully the kid was a victim of a potential scammer.

11:03: Cleveland is back on the clock: they take Jabril Peppers, a safety from Michigan who had a diluted drug sample at the Combine. This is the 5th time in 11 years, the Browns have had two first round picks.

One of the guys who runs the Cleveland Browns’ front office now was the Jonah Hill character in Moneyball, an Ivy League nitwit who played WR at Harvard in college, but made his reputation in baseball front offices.

Appears as if the Browns upgraded their defense tonight; Gregg Williams is the Browns’ new defensive coordinator- as a Rams’ fan, I think highly of Williams after he was our DC the last few years.

11:10: Atlanta Falcons trade with Seattle to move up to the #26 slot; Falcons have two new coordinators this year, unusual for a team that did so well last year- they take Takkarist McKinley, a LB from UCLA who was a sprinter in high school and who was raised by his grandmother after his mother deserted him at age 6.

11:18: Buffalo takes another LSU CB: Ed Orgeron might be there to support his guys, but in reality these are guys recruited and coached mostly by Les Miles, who put so many guys into the NFL it wound up costing him his job.

11:20: Dallas Cowboys get a worse greeting than Goodell when their turn is announced; no one is less popular in Philly than the Cowboys, who take Taco Charlton, a pass rusher that played at Michigan.

Long time ago, I knew a guy from Philly who wore a green windbreaker; on the back was a drawing of an animated Eagle urinating on the Cowboy logo. Oy.

11:32: Browns have traded up for a third pick in the first round; during the commercial break I put the A’s game on and saw something I never saw before— Kendall Graveman recorded an unassisted double play and he’s a pitcher— great play by him on a comebacker.

Cleveland drafts a TE from Miami; he will be a 20-year old rookie who looks more like a WR than a tight end. He has a lot of people celebrating with him when he gets drafted.

11:35: After a tribute to the late Dan Rooney, the Steelers pick JJ Watt’s brother, a LB from Wisconsin. Steelers play in Houston Christmas night.

11:40: 49ers/Saints have the last two picks tonite— San Francisco takes Reuben Foster, their third defensive player taken tonite.

New Orleans ends the first round by taking a tackle from Wisconsin, someone to protect Drew Brees as his career winds down. Ryan Ramczyk once quit football to become a welder; lucky for him he got talked out of that blunder.

There is a kid named Forrest Lamp in the draft, an offensive lineman from Western Kentucky. When he gets drafted, I will call him a bright kid, because his freakin’ name is Lamp!!!!

If Gruden or Mel Kiper criticize the team that selects Lamp, will they be throwing shade?
