  • LEADING OFF: Peavy, Giants at Fenway, Lopez debuts for Nats
    July 18, 2016

A look at what's happening all around the majors Tuesday:

    GIANT JAKE

Jake Peavy and the San Francisco Giants begin a two-game series at Fenway Park. Peavy started three postseason games for the Red Sox during their 2013 run to the World Series crown. Rick Porcello (11-2, 3.66 ERA) starts for Boston. Manager John Farrell said the team thought Porcello would benefit from a few extra days of rest out of the All-Star break.

    WELCOME

Right-hander Reynaldo Lopez is expected to make his major league debut when he starts for NL East-leading Washington at home against the Dodgers. Lopez gets his chance because Nationals righty Joe Ross isn't ready to come off the disabled list. Lopez had never pitched above Class A until this year, and is a combined 4-5 with a 3.19 ERA in Double-A and Triple-A.

    RELIEF AT THE START

Orioles right-hander Vance Worley (2-0, 2.87 ERA) and Yankees righty Nathan Eovaldi (7-6, 5.11) return to the rotation after stints in the bullpen. Worley hasn't started since April and had a 2.23 ERA in 18 relief appearances. Baltimore is hoping he can bolster its struggling rotation, which had the third-worst ERA (5.14) in the majors entering Monday. Eovaldi threw 7 2/3 scoreless innings over three relief appearances after losing his rotation spot.

    STREAKING SANCHEZ

Toronto All-Star Aaron Sanchez (9-1) pitches the opener of a two-game set in Arizona. He has won eight straight decisions with a 2.87 ERA since losing to Oakland on April 22.

    ON THE MEND

All-Star Dexter Fowler and fellow Cubs outfielder Jorge Soler are set to begin rehab assignments with Triple-A Iowa. They've both been out because of hamstring injuries.

      July 19, 2016

Hottest team: Angels (8-2 last 10)

It may be too little, too late for the Halos, but Los Angeles has won all four games since the All-Star break. Following a three-game sweep of the White Sox, the Angels rallied from a 4-0 deficit on Monday to stun the stumbling Rangers, 9-5 thanks to Mike Trout’s 19th home run. Los Angeles has scored at least seven runs in three of its last four victories, as the Halos look to provide plenty of run support for Tim Lincecum tonight. The former Cy Young winner hasn’t been particularly sharp since winning his L.A. debut, allowing 17 earned runs in his past four outings, while the Angels own a 1-3 mark in this stretch.

Coldest team: Rays (1-9 last 10)

Tampa Bay just can’t seem to bust out of this category, as the Rays dropped their 11th straight road game in Monday’s setback at Colorado. The Rays have won just twice this month, while allowing at least four runs in nine of the past 10 contests. The last time that Tampa Bay won on the road came at Arizona back on June 8, as the Rays tries to end their highway woes tonight at Coors Field. Southpaw Blake Snell takes the mound for Tampa Bay as the Rays have compiled a 1-5 record in his six starts this season.

Hottest pitcher: Vince Velasquez, Phillies (8-2, 3.32 ERA)

Philadelphia suffered a heart-breaking loss in Monday’s 3-2 defeat to Miami, allowing two runs in the ninth inning before Martin Prado’s game-winning homer in extra innings. The Phillies turn to Velasquez tonight, who has won three straight starts since missing time in June with a sore arm. Velasquez has allowed a total of four earned runs in these three victories, while striking out 10 Marlins the last time he faced Miami in a 3-1 victory back on May 17.

Coldest pitcher: Cody Reed, Reds (0-4, 8.39 ERA)

Cincinnati is looking for three straight wins for the first time since early June after routing Atlanta on Monday. The two teams hook up tonight at Great American Ballpark as the southpaw Reed is seeking his first Major League win in his sixth start. Reed hasn’t lasted past the fifth inning in his last four outings, while giving up at least four runs in each of his first five starts. Reed will be listed as a favorite for just the second time in his short career, as the left-hander was lit up for five earned runs in five innings against San Diego on June 24.

Biggest UNDER run: Mets (7-0 last seven)

The Cubs finally got over the hump against the Mets after getting swept in last season’s NLCS and dropping all four games at Citi Field earlier this month in Monday’s 5-1 rout. New York’s offense hasn’t woken up in July, scoring two runs or less in five of the past seven games, including four of those performances against the Cubs and Nationals. It should be another low-scoring affair at Wrigley tonight with Noah Syndergaard and Jake Arrieta on the mound. Arrieta has benefited from plenty of rest, last taking the mound on July 8 as the 2015 Cy Young winner owns a 1.65 home ERA.

Biggest OVER run: Dodgers (7-3 last 10 on road)

Los Angeles ventures east for a three-game series with the NL-East leading Nationals. The Dodgers came up short in Sunday’s 6-5 defeat at Arizona, but managed to cash the ‘over’ in two of three games against the Diamondbacks. The Dodgers’ offense has been up and down on the road of late, scoring at least five runs in five of the past seven games away from Chavez Ravine, but putting up one or less in the other two in this span. Scott Kazmir has cashed the ‘over’ in six of eight road starts this season for Los Angeles, while allowing at least three earned runs in six highway outings.

      Matchup to watch:
      Giants vs. Red Sox

Two teams that will likely be playing in October hook up for a brief two-game interleague set at Fenway Park. San Francisco and Boston split a two-game series at AT&T Park last month as the Giants make their first trip to Beantown since 2007. The Giants were swept by the Padres this past weekend, the first time San Francisco was swept on the road this season. The Red Sox captured two of three from the rival Yankees in the Bronx, while Boston owns a 7-3 record in its past 10 home contests. Former Red Sox right-hander Jake Peavy heads to the mound tonight for San Francisco opposite Rick Porcello, as the Giants try to improve on a 4-1 interleague record on the highway.

      Betcha didn’t know:
It’s been a nightmare of a second half for the White Sox, who blew a 3-0 ninth inning lead in last night’s 4-3 defeat at Seattle. Chicago dropped its fifth straight game overall and is 0-4 since the All-Star break. The Mariners have been impressive in the second game of a home series this season coming off a victory in the opener, putting together a solid 6-2 record in this situation.

Biggest public favorite: Blue Jays (-190) at Diamondbacks

Biggest public underdog: Rangers (+105) at Angels

Biggest line move: Dodgers (+100 to -110) at Nationals

CHICAGO (AP) Jeurys Familia escaped a bases-loaded jam with a game-ending double play after Rene Rivera drove in the tiebreaking run with two outs in the top of the ninth, lifting the New York Mets over the Chicago Cubs 2-1 on Tuesday night.

Familia walked Addison Russell and Miguel Montero to start the ninth, then Javier Baez reached on a bunt single when third baseman Jose Reyes threw wide to first. Pinch-hitter Matt Szczur hit a grounder to first baseman James Loney, and Loney threw out Russell at the plate. Kris Bryant then hit into a 5-4-3 double play to give Familia his 33rd save in 33 chances.

Rivera had the third single in the ninth - following hits by Loney and Asdrubal Cabrera - off Hector Rondon (1-2) as the Mets beat the Cubs for the fifth time in six games after sweeping them in last year's NL Championship Series.

Hansel Robles (4-3) pitched two scoreless innings in relief for the win.

                RED SOX 4, GIANTS 0

BOSTON (AP) - David Ortiz hit a three-run homer and Rick Porcello remained unbeaten at home as Boston beat struggling San Francisco.

Brock Holt also homered for the Red Sox, who won for the seventh time in eight games. The NL West-leading Giants remained winless since the All-Star break with their fourth straight loss.

Porcello (12-2) scattered four hits over 6 1-3 innings, improving to 9-0 at home.

Jake Peavy (5-8), a key member of Boston's 2013 World Series champions, struck out six over six innings and held his former teammates to three hits, but two left the park.

The Giants played at Fenway Park for the first time since 2007.

                DODGERS 8, NATIONALS 4

WASHINGTON (AP) - Chase Utley drove in three runs with three hits, including a leadoff homer that quickly spoiled the major league debut of Reynaldo Lopez and sent Los Angeles over Washington.

Los Angeles swept three games from Washington at home in June and has won six straight in the series.

Scott Kazmir (8-3) gave up one run and four hits in seven innings, striking out eight. He extended his unbeaten streak to 12 starts, going 6-0 in that span.

Lopez (0-1), considered one of Washington's top prospects, allowed six runs and 10 hits in 4 2/3 innings. He struck out nine, featuring a fastball in the upper 90s mph.

                PIRATES 3, BREWERS 2

PITTSBURGH (AP) - Josh Harrison tripled leading off the bottom of the ninth and scored when the throw from the outfield skipped past Milwaukee third baseman Hernan Perez and out of play to lift Pittsburgh.

Perez's RBI single off Pittsburgh All-Star closer Mark Melancon (1-1) with two outs in the ninth tied the game, but the tie was short-lived. Harrison's drive off Tyler Thornburg (3-4) was just out of the reach of Milwaukee center fielder Kirk Nieuwenhuis. Harrison chugged to third then popped up and strolled home when the relay throw from second baseman Scooter Gennett went by Perez.

Pirates rookie Jameson Taillon pitched six innings in his return from the disabled list, narrowly avoiding serious injury after taking a 105 mph line drive off his head in the second. The 24-year-old rookie lay on the ground for several moments while being tended to by trainers but was permitted to stay in the game.

                MARLINS 2, PHILLIES 1, 10 INNINGS

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Christian Yelich homered and drove in the winning run with a single in the 10th inning.

J.T. Realmuto added two hits for the Marlins, who won their third straight to remain one game ahead of the New York Mets for the second wild-card spot in the National League.

Adeiny Hechavarria opened the 10th with a double off David Hernandez (1-3). After Hernandez walked Martin Prado to put runners on first and second with two outs, Phillies manager Pete Mackanin lifted Hernandez so left-hander Daniel Stumpf could face the left-handed Yelich.

Yelich put Miami in front by lacing Stumpf's 3-2 pitch to left field, easily scoring Hechavarria.

A.J. Ramos pitched a scoreless 10th for his 31st save in 32 opportunities.

Mike Dunn (2-1) tossed a 1-2-3 ninth to earn the victory.

                INDIANS 7, ROYALS 3

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) - Danny Salazar handled the Royals for the third time this season while the Cleveland Indians roughed up Kansas City's starter-by-committee.

Salazar (11-3) allowed three runs over 6 2-3 innings while striking out seven.

Mike Napoli hit a two-run homer off Brian Flynn (1-1), and Carlos Santana drove in two runs.

Francisco Lindor also homered as the AL Central leaders snapped a five-game skid at Kauffman Stadium.

                BLUE JAYS 5, DIAMONDBACKS 1

PHOENIX (AP) - Edwin Encarnacion hit his 25th home run and Aaron Sanchez pitched seven strong innings for Toronto.

Sanchez (10-1), pitching on nine days' rest thanks to the All-Star break, allowed a run and scattered six hits to improve to 9-0 in his last 15 starts. He struck out five with no walks and hit two batters.

Zack Godley (2-1), called up from Triple-A Reno to make the start for Arizona, went five innings, giving up four runs, three earned, and six hits. He struck out seven and walked one.

                YANKEES 7, ORIOLES 1

NEW YORK (AP) - Starlin Castro hit a two-run homer and drove in four runs, Nathan Eovaldi won for the first time since May and New York beat Baltimore to move back above .500.

The AL East-leading Orioles have lost three in a row.

Castro homered in the second off Vance Worley (2-1) and hit a two-run double in the sixth. Chase Headley added a two-run homer in the eighth.

Making his first start since July 1 following three relief outings caused by a six-start winless streak, Eovaldi (8-6) won for the first time since May 29.

                ANGELS 8, RANGERS 6

ANAHEIM, Calif. (AP) - Albert Pujols hit a pair of three-run homers and Los Angeles remained unbeaten since the All-Star break with its season-best fifth straight victory.

Pujols connected in the fourth and fifth innings against Kyle Lohse (0-2) for his second multi-homer game in three days, driving in six runs for the first time since 2009.

Pujols' homers were the 578th and 579th of his career, pulling him closer to Mark McGwire (583) for 10th place on baseball's career list.

Tim Lincecum (2-3) had seven strikeouts while winning for the second time in his six starts for the Angels. Huston Street pitched the ninth for his eighth save - his first since June 14.

                ATHLETICS 4, ASTROS 3, 10 INNINGS

OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) - Marcus Semien scored from second base on Josh Reddick's two-out infield single in the 10th inning to lift Oakland.

The A's rallied from three runs down and trailed 3-2 before Coco Crisp's game-tying double off Astros closer Will Harris in the ninth.

After the Astros stranded the bases loaded in the top of the 10th, Reddick won it with the sixth walkoff hit of his career.

Semien singled with two outs off Pat Neshek (2-2) and stole second. Yonder Alonso walked before Reddick singled to deep shortstop. Houston's Carlos Correa fielded the ball cleanly but threw wide of home as Semien slid safely in with the winning run.

Mark Rzepczynski (1-0) got the last out in the top of the 10th for the win.

                WHITE SOX 6, MARINERS 1

SEATTLE (AP) - Melky Cabrera hit a tie-breaking homer leading off the seventh inning, Todd Frazier added a two-run shot in the ninth and Chicago snapped a five-game losing streak.

Cabrera lined his ninth home run of the season just over the wall in left field off Seattle starter Wade Miley (6-7) to snap a 1-1 tie.

Chicago starter Jose Quintana (8-8) threw six innings and his only major mistake was Robinson Cano's 22nd home run in the fourth inning.

                TWINS 6, TIGERS 2

DETROIT (AP) - Tommy Milone held Detroit scoreless until the ninth inning, and Minnesota broke through with five runs in the seventh.

Brian Dozier hit a two-run homer and Eduardo Nunez had three RBIs.

Milone (3-2) left in the ninth. Down 6-0 at the start of the inning, Detroit scored twice and loaded the bases with one out. Brandon Kintzler struck out James McCann and Jose Iglesias to end it.

Snell (2-4) struck out nine and Matt Andriese pitched the final three innings for his first save. Steve Pearce also homered in his return from the disabled list for the Rays, who ended the third longest road losing streak in club history.

They broke out against Rockies starter Tyler Chatwood (8-6).

                BRAVES 5, REDS 4, 11 INNINGS

CINCINNATI (AP) - Atlanta's bullpen blew a two-run lead in the ninth inning, but Ender Inciarte hit a sacrifice fly in the 11th that evened a series between the NL's worst teams.

Nick Markakis started the winning rally with a single off Tony Cingrani (2-3) and took third on Jeff Francoeur's single off Blake Wood. Inciarte's fly to deep center broke the tie.

Mauricio Cabrera (1-0) got the last five outs for his first career win.

                  **********

                  Armadillo: Wednesday's List of 13: Mid-week musings........

                  13) Ex-St. Louis Cardinals scouting director Chris Correa was sentenced to nearly four years in prison for hacking into Houston Astros' computer personnel database. Correa did this roughly 60 times- he had previously worked for the Astros.

                  12) Unrelated note: Cardinals are only major league team that is over .500 despite being under .500 at home- they're 21-28 at home, 48-44 overall.

                  11) MSNBC's Steve Kornacki pointed out that this is first Presidential convention that was held in the arena of the defending NBA champ since the Democrats held their 2000 convention in Los Angeles.

                  10) ESPN will start the ACC Network in 2019, for better or for worse. It'll be really, really good during basketball season. Football? Not sure we need Syracuse-Virginia replays, but thats what they'll be showing.

                  9) It costs $8M to host a Presidential debate. Wright State in Dayton backed out of hosting the first debate in September for financial reasons, so now Hofstra on Long Island will host the first debate, which will be must-see TV.

                  8) Here at the Westgate Superbook in Las Vegas, my vacation home this week, the over/under on Golden State Warrior wins next year is listed at 67.5.

                  7) Winner of the Westgate NFL Handicapping contest last year took home $914,175 for his $1,500 investment.

                  6) Dodger games are blacked out here in Las Vegas; it makes no sense. If the new MLB commish can allow everyone to wear white baseball shoes now, he can allow Dodger games to be shown in Vegas, where lot of LA fans come for their vacation.

                  5) Felix Hernandez' brother is pitching coach for the Mariners' Class A team in Everett, WA. I'm guessing his job is safe as long as King Felix is a Mariner.

                  4) There have been 133 homers hit at Safeco Field this year, most of any AL park and thats more than a little surprising.

                  3) Phoenix Suns will play "home games" against the Spurs, Mavericks next season in Mexico City. Two marquee games their home fans get cheated out of seeing.

                  2) Jets should just trade a 7th-round draft pick to the Rams for Nick Foles, then cut bait with holdout QB Ryan Fitzpatrick. When your QB is holding out on July 20, thats no way to begin a successful season.

                  1) I'm thinking Jim Grobe will do just fine coaching Baylor. Ten years ago, he had Wake Forest playing in the Orange Bowl-- he had a three-year, 28-12 run with the Deacons, and if you can win like that at Wake Forest, you can damn sure coach.

                            • LEADING OFF: King Felix back for Mariners, Pomeranz debuts
                              July 20, 2016

A look at what's happening all around the majors today:

                              RETURN OF THE KING

Felix Hernandez (4-4, 2.86) makes his first start for Seattle since May 27 after recovering from a right calf injury. The Mariners ace made two minor rehab appearances, most recently striking out seven over 5 2/3 innings of one-run ball with Triple-A Tacoma. He'll face the White Sox and right-hander Miguel Gonzalez (2-5, 4.40).

                              NEW SOX

All-Star Drew Pomeranz gets his first start with the Red Sox when Boston hosts San Francisco. The left-hander was acquired last week from San Diego for prized pitching prospect Anderson Espinoza after going 8-7 with a 2.47 ERA with the Padres. The Giants send out righty Matt Cain (1-5, 5.34).

                              COLON VS THE CUBS

Bartolo Colon (8-4, 3.11) and the Mets close out a three-game series with the Cubs. Colon held Chicago to two runs over six innings in a 4-3 win on July 2. He'll face right-hander Kyle Hendricks (8-6, 2.41), who hasn't lost since June 13.

                              COMING SOON

Blue Jays slugger Jose Bautista is expected to begin a rehab assignment and could rejoin Toronto when it opens a three-game interleague series at home against San Diego on Monday. Bautista, out since June 16 with turf toe, will begin his rehab with Class A Dunedin and then play three games with Triple-A Buffalo over the weekend. ''If all's good, you'll probably see him Monday I would guess,'' manager John Gibbons said.

                              KEEP IT GOING

Anthony DeSclafani was supposed to be the Reds' opening day starter until he strained an oblique late in spring training. He missed most of the first half, but is back in top-of-the-rotation form. He's 4-0 in his last five starts with a 2.67 ERA. He starts the final game of a series against the Braves.

                              • Blue Jays-Diamondbacks preview
                                July 20, 2016

PHOENIX -- Toronto first baseman Edwin Encarnacion has made a living out of driving baseballs out of Chase Field in the few opportunities interleague play has provided, and he will have one more chance Wednesday.

His potent bat and the strong arm of Aaron Sanchez halted the Diamondbacks and their two-game winning streak in a 5-1 victory Tuesday, but Arizona will retaliate with left-hander Patrick Corbin in an attempt to get a split in the short two-game set. Corbin beat the Jays in Toronto on June 21.

Encarnacion, who leads the major leagues with 84 RBIs, has nine homers in 66 plate appearances in 16 career games at Chase Field. His three-run homer in the third inning Tuesday gave Sanchez a 3-1 lead that he never lost.

He hit five homers in a three-game series here in 2010, including three in one game, and had two homers in a three-game series in 2013, the last times Toronto has been in Arizona. He has 16 RBIs in 16 games at Chase Field.

"I see the ball real well and I feel confident in this ball park, so it works out," Encarnacion said. "Maybe it's the hitter's eye, I don't know."

Encarnacion will be a free agent when his four-year, $37 million contract expires this winter, and Chase Field might provide a welcome home, except for the fact that four-time All Star Paul Goldschmidt is a fixture at first.

"If they had average Joe, they might sign (Encarnacion)," Toronto manager Jon Gibbons said. "I don't know what it is, but he likes hitting here."

Hitters on both sides often have talked about the good visibility provided by the 40-foot green fence in dead center field.

Toronto right-hander Marcus Stroman will oppose Corbin on Wednesday as the Jays look to win for the 11th time in 15 games. Stroman is 7-4 with a 5.15 ERA in his first full season in the rotation. He missed most of last season with a knee injury suffered in spring training.

The series matches Encarnacion and Arizona third baseman Jake Lamb, two of the hottest hitters in the majors. Since June 10, Encarnacion is hitting .333 with nine doubles, 13 homers, 37 RBIs and a .765 slugging percentage. Only Lamb has a higher slugging percentage (.844) in the same span. Lamb, the reigning NL player of the week, was 0-for-4 Tuesday.

Sanchez commanded both sides of the plate with his fastball and made his best pitchers when it was most appropriate, although that is not unusual for him this season. The D-backs were 0-for-10 with runners in scoring position, scoring their lone run on a groundout.

Opponents are hitting .189 against him with runners in scoring position, best on a stingy staff. Opponents are hitting .198 against both R.A. Dickey and J.A. Happ.

Sanchez has thrown 125 1/3 innings this season, eight short of his career high at several levels in 2014, and it seems to only a matter of time until the Jays move him to the bullpen in an attempt to save his innings.

"It's something I can't control," Sanchez said. "I'm going to go out there and take the ball every five days until they tell me not to. That's all I'm worried about really. When the time comes, then we'll have to worry about it. For now, just continue to do what I have been doing."
