  • Armadillo: Saturday's six-pack

-- A woman in New Jersey found a lottery ticket worth $470,000 while getting ready to do her taxes.

-- 75-year old Larry Brown resigned as basketball coach at SMU. Tim Jankovich is the Mustangs' new coach. SMU is on probation for two more years.

-- Matt Harvey is having season-ending surgery on his shoulder.

-- Red Sox acquired 2B/3B Aaron Hill, adding a righthanded bat for their infield.

-- Looks like the 2017 NFL Draft will take place in Philadelphia.

-- Apparently Thomas Jefferson is responsible for bringing macaroni and cheese to this country, after visiting France.

Armadillo: Saturday's List of 13: Thoughts on a sad day.......

I don't feel like writing today, but I will because it is what I do. This probably won't be that well-written or that well-organized, but these are my thoughts on a cruddy day.

This has been a dismal week for America; we can't lean on the crutch of blaming other countries or religions-- we did this to ourselves.

Seven people dead; five in Dallas, one in Louisiana, one in Minnesota; why? We need to be better people, better employees, more respectful of disparate cultures. America is a melting pot and always has been; we have to make sure the pot doesn't boil over.

We have to do better as a country-- we need to be more tolerant of each other, need to be nicer to each other and no, being nice is not a sign of weakness.

We need leaders who will earn people's respect; seen many of those lately?

We need to worry less about the Middle East and more about America- we neglected this country, in trying to be the policeman for the entire world. No more.

Turns out the shooter in Dallas was an Army veteran, making things even worse.

There need to be less weapons in this country, no matter what the NRA says.

Social media and cameras in phones have outpaced traditional journalism in letting the world see what is going on. The news gets out faster, reactions are faster, and often these reactions are explosive and dangerous. There is less careful thought now.

Being a policeman is a difficult job, an important job, often a thankless job; it needs to be done well, so there is respect between the police and the people they protect.

Shootings are becoming so common that we're getting desensitized to them; just one more special report on CNN. How do you fix that? I do not have an answer.

All I can offer is this:
-- Talk to people. Listen to people. Get along with people. Be nice!!!!
-- Tolerate differing opinions and lifestyles. It is OK to disagree.
-- Respect authority; the police are hired to protect us.
-- We're lucky to live in a free country; lets not abuse the privilege.

            • Colon, Scherzer, Saunders, Belt added to All-Star rosters
              July 9, 2016

NEW YORK (AP) Bartolo Colon and Max Scherzer are headed to the All-Star Game, picked as replacements for other pitchers originally selected to the National League team.

Major League Baseball also announced Friday that Toronto Blue Jays outfielder Michael Saunders and San Francisco Giants first baseman Brandon Belt won the final two All-Star roster spots, elected by fans in online balloting.

''This is a proud moment for me and my family,'' Saunders said. ''Everyone knows that Canada takes care of their own. I'm Canadian through and through. Just to feel that support, the best way I can describe, everyone's been asking me, is I feel loved by this country. To see the support they gave me is very humbling.''

Saunders joins the American League team, while Belt gets a slot on the NL squad.

''Extremely excited, obviously. It's hard to put into words,'' Belt said. ''I just can't believe that I'm an All-Star this year. It's pretty cool, especially when you step back and think about how many fans voted and how many times they voted, how many messages that I got of how their thumbs were numb. It's pretty overwhelming to think about.''

The 43-year-old Colon was chosen to replace Madison Bumgarner in Tuesday's showcase in San Diego because the Giants ace is scheduled to pitch Sunday against Arizona.

A fan favorite with the New York Mets, Colon is 7-4 with a 3.28 ERA. He was picked by his own manager - Terry Collins of the Mets will lead the NL team.

''It means a lot, especially for someone my age,'' Colon said through a translator. ''It surprised me a lot.''

In one of the most stunning and charming moments of the season, Colon homered in San Diego in early May, becoming the oldest player to hit his first major league home run.

The hefty right-hander said his fourth All-Star nod (first in the NL) was very meaningful to him because he's ''in the final stages'' of his career. He said he'd like to pitch one more season in the majors if healthy.

''When I asked him if he wanted to go the All-Star Game, he said yes. He didn't say, hey, I need to rest, I'm 43 years old, I'm shot. He said, `Thank you, I'd like to go.' So he's going to go,'' Collins said, drawing laughs.

Scherzer (9-6, 3.21 ERA, major league-leading 155 strikeouts) was selected to his fourth straight All-Star Game. He will substitute for Washington Nationals teammate Stephen Strasburg, who came off the disabled list this week and won't pitch in the showcase as a precaution. Strasburg, who is from San Diego, plans to attend the game, the Nationals said.

''Max was excited. Never seen a veteran guy as elated as he, to be a part of the All-Star Game,'' Washington manager Dusty Baker said. ''I think he's a good representative to show people what a privilege and an honor it is to go.''

Strasburg (12-0) started Friday night and beat the New York Mets 3-1 in his second outing since coming off the DL. He returned from an upper back strain Sunday against Cincinnati.

''Because of Stephen's injury that he just came off of, being on three days' rest, it would have cost him time again with us,'' Baker said. ''So I'm just glad that he's going, especially in his hometown. But there's a lot of risk for Stephen since he just came off the DL and you don't know how he's going to come through this game tonight. So everybody decided it'd be better that he doesn't start or pitch.''

Pittsburgh Pirates outfielder Starling Marte finished second just behind Belt, who received 10.4 million votes. He also beat out Colorado rookie shortstop Trevor Story, Arizona third baseman Jake Lamb and Milwaukee outfielder Ryan Braun.

Houston outfielder George Springer was runner-up to Saunders, who garnered 17.7 million votes. Behind them were Boston second baseman Dustin Pedroia, Detroit second baseman Ian Kinsler and Tampa Bay third baseman Evan Longoria.

              • LEADING OFF: Sanchez looks for another win for Blue Jays
                July 8, 2016

A look at what's happening all around the majors Saturday:

                SURGING SANCHEZ

Toronto right-hander Aaron Sanchez (9-1, 2.94 ERA) looks for his third straight win when he faces the Detroit Tigers. Sanchez, who turned 24 on July 1, is 3-0 with a sparkling 1.61 ERA in his last four starts. He hasn't lost since April 22 against Oakland.

                FEELING BETTER

Right-hander Julio Teheran, Atlanta's lone All-Star, has been cleared to make his regular start against the White Sox after being treated for an infection due to an ingrown hair on his right thigh. ''If everything goes well tomorrow and he feels good Sunday, he'll be available to pitch in the All-Star Game, I'm assuming,'' interim manager Brian Snitker said Friday. Teheran (3-7, 2.72 ERA) faces left-hander Jose Quintana (6-8, 3.06 ERA) in the second game of the series.

                VERRETT'S CHANCE

Logan Verrett starts in place of Matt Harvey when the New York Mets take on Max Scherzer and the NL East-leading Washington Nationals. Harvey is headed for season-ending surgery for thoracic outlet syndrome and manager Terry Collins has said Verrett likely will get a chance to hold down that spot in the rotation. The right-hander is 3-5 with a 4.01 ERA in 23 appearances this season, including five starts. ''I know I'm not Matt Harvey, I'm Logan Verrett. My job is to pitch and however I can get in there and help the team is exactly what I'm going to do,'' Verrett said.

                BUXTON'S STATUS

Minnesota Twins center fielder Byron Buxton is day to day after he bruised his right knee when he crashed into the outfield wall in the first inning of Friday night's game at Texas. The ball hit by Rougned Odor clipped off the edge of Buxton's glove and the bill of his cap before he ran into the padded wall. The impact broke his sunglasses into multiple pieces. Buxton was eventually taken off the field on a motorized cart, climbing into the front seat with help and without putting any pressure on his right leg.

                • Cespedes, Syndergaard leave Mets' loss to Nats with injuries
                  July 9, 2016

NEW YORK (AP) Injuries are piling up at a dizzying pace for the New York Mets. This time, it was their two best players who went down.

Yoenis Cespedes and Noah Syndergaard were removed early from Friday night's 3-1 loss to the rival Washington Nationals, only hours after New York announced that struggling pitcher Matt Harvey will have season-ending surgery for thoracic outlet syndrome.

''I guess it's part of the game. I've never had it in such mass before, to where it's every day. It's hard to walk into this room because the conversation is about who got hurt tonight,'' manager Terry Collins said. ''As you guys know, I'm a little tired of talking about it. That's my job to talk about it, but I'm running out of things to say and we're running out of bodies.''

Cespedes was pulled after three innings with a strained right quadriceps and said he hopes to return after the All-Star break next week. The slugger got hurt chasing Daniel Murphy's RBI double to deep center field in the third and was replaced by Juan Lagares in the fourth.

With his velocity dropping, Syndergaard (9-4) exited in the fifth with arm fatigue that was not elbow-related, the Mets said. The big right-hander has been pitching with a bone spur in his right elbow that he called ''pretty insignificant.''

''His arm went dead. He's got a tired arm and (his) stuff went away,'' Collins said. ''But he said there's no pain.''

Cespedes and Syndergaard were selected for the All-Star Game in San Diego, but both are unlikely to participate, Collins said. They are expected to be examined Saturday.

Collins will manage the National League squad Tuesday and said before Friday night's game that Syndergaard would definitely pitch in the Midsummer Classic, a pledge that lasted just a few hours.

''It's disappointing, but there will be a lot more,'' Syndergaard said. ''It's a long season, you put a lot of wear and tear on your body, just right now I think I need a little break.''

Already on the disabled list for well more than a month now are first baseman Lucas Duda and third baseman David Wright. Not to mention right-hander Zack Wheeler, making a slow recovery from March 2015 Tommy John surgery.

Wright is almost certainly out for the season following neck surgery to repair a herniated disk. Duda isn't expected back anytime soon, and there's no longer a timetable for Wheeler's return following a few setbacks in his rehabilitation program.

''We just have to keep going. As I've told you before, nobody in baseball feels sorry for us,'' Collins said.

With two outs in the fifth and a 2-2 count on Jayson Werth, Syndergaard stepped off the rubber. He was throwing his sizzling fastball in the high-90s (mph) earlier in the game, but his first two heaters to Werth clocked 93 mph.

''Didn't have that late life, that little bit of extra whip at the end. I could tell something wasn't necessarily right,'' Syndergaard said.

Mets catcher Rene Rivera visited the mound and then went back behind the plate before Collins and assistant trainer Brian Chicklo came out of the dugout, drawing groans from the crowd.

Syndergaard waved his glove in their direction as if to shoo them away, but after a meeting on the mound, he walked back to the dugout with Chicklo.

''I feel like I could have finished the inning out,'' Syndergaard said. ''I think I was still spotting up, but just, I'd look at the radar gun and see 93, 94 (mph). It's pretty uncharacteristic of me.''

Seth Lugo relieved with New York trailing 3-0 and was given all the time he needed to warm up. The rookie right-hander tossed two hitless innings.

''I didn't feel any pain, no discomfort, just fatigue, really,'' Syndergaard said. ''I just think it's that time of the year - my first full season in the big leagues. I've thrown a lot of pitches. I've thrown a lot of innings.''

He reiterated that the issue had nothing to do with his bone spur.

''It all boils down to a little shoulder fatigue,'' Syndergaard said. ''I felt like it was probably building up throughout the game a little bit. ... I got checked out after the game when I got pulled out, and no concerns from the doctor.''

Stephen Strasburg (12-0) threw seven innings of two-hit ball and Clint Robinson hit a two-run homer for the Nationals, who extended their NL East lead to four games over the Mets after New York won the opener of the four-game set Thursday night.

Jonathan Papelbon earned his 18th save.

It was the first matchup between Syndergaard and Strasburg, who is 3-0 with a 1.83 ERA in three outings against the Mets this year.

The start was delayed 37 minutes by rain.

                  TAKE THAT!

Murphy, booed again by the Citi Field crowd of 35,030, has hit safely in all 11 games against the Mets since they let him leave as a free agent in the offseason. He's batting .409 with 15 RBIs and five of his career-high 15 homers vs. New York.

                  • Phillips suffers hairline fracture in hand
                    July 8, 2016

MIAMI (AP) Cincinnati Reds second baseman Brandon Phillips was hit by a pitch on the left hand and X-rays revealed he sustained a hairline fracture.

Phillips was hit by a pitch thrown by Jose Fernandez in the top of the seventh inning in the Reds' 3-1 loss to the Miami Marlins on Friday night.

Phillips initially stayed in the game before being taken out in the bottom of the eighth in favor of Jose Peraza.

''It wasn't good enough to stay in the game,'' Reds manager Bryan Price said. ''It was real sore. We'll have to see where he is tomorrow with a lot of ice and time to sleep and get the swelling down.''

Phillips is hitting .256 with six home runs and 31 RBIs in 80 games this season.

PITTSBURGH (AP) Josh Bell hit a grand slam in his second major-league at bat, and the Pittsburgh Pirates beat the slumping Chicago Cubs 12-6 on Saturday night.

Bell drove a 1-1 pitch from Adam Warren (3-2) over the seats above the 21-foot wall in right for his second pinch hit in two games since being recalled from Triple-A on Friday. Jordy Mercer followed with another home run to make it a five-run fifth for the Pirates, who have won nine of 10.

Andrew McCutchen and Sean Rodriguez homered earlier off Jon Lester, and Arquimedes Caminero (1-2) pitched 1 2/3 innings for the win. Jared Hughes earned his third major league save by tossing three scoreless innings.

Ben Zobrist had a two-run homer and Anthony Rizzo had four hits for Chicago, which has lost of nine of 10.

NEW YORK (AP) - Daniel Murphy homered for the sixth time this year against his former team, powering Max Scherzer and the Nationals to the win.

The NL East leaders opened a five-game lead on the Mets.

Murphy had a run-scoring single in the third inning, an RBI double in the fifth and launched his 16th home run in the seventh. He is batting .438 (21 of 48) with 19 RBIs against the Mets after becoming a free agent in the offseason and signing with Washington.

Scherzer (10-6) gave up three hits and an unearned run in seven innings.

New York's Logan Verrett (3-6) gave up five runs on only four hits in 6 2/3 innings.

TORONTO (AP) - Victor Martinez hit a tiebreaking homer in the eighth inning, and Detroit stopped Toronto's seven-game winning streak.

Bruce Rondon (3-1) earned the win despite allowing a tying home run to Devon Travis in the seventh. Rondon missed the first two games of the series with flu-like symptoms.

Justin Wilson pitched the eighth and Francisco Rodriguez finished for his 24th save.

CLEVELAND (AP) - Brian McCann's RBI double with two outs in the 11th inning lifted the Yankees to the victory.

McCann's clutch hit off Tommy Hunter (2-2) pushed New York to its second win in three days over the AL Central-leading Indians.

Yankees left-hander Aroldis Chapman (3-0) struck out four in the final 2 1/3 innings.
