                  Wednesday's Diamond Notes
                  July 6, 2016

Hottest team: Pirates (6-0 last six)

Pittsburgh remains on fire after rallying past St. Louis last night, 5-2 to win its sixth consecutive road game, all in the role of an underdog. The pitching continues to be outstanding during this run for the Bucs, allowing three runs or less in all six victories, while improving to 4-1 at Busch Stadium. Southpaw Jeff Locke takes the mound for the Pirates this evening, as he owns a 7-2 record in his last nine trips to the hill, but Pittsburgh is 1-4 in his previous five starts in the role of a road underdog.

Coldest team: Braves (3-9 last 12)

Atlanta has been cold the entire season, but the Braves showed some signs of life in June by winning six straight at one point. However, the Braves have stumbled of late by losing eight of 10, including getting swept at home by the red-hot Indians. Their current series in Philadelphia hasn’t worked out too well, as the Braves have lost the first two games to the Phillies, while getting outscored 13-3. Atlanta tries to avoid the sweep this afternoon with right-hander Tyrell Jenkins making his first Major League start.

                  Hottest pitcher:
Wade LeBlanc, Mariners (1-0, 1.50 ERA)

LeBlanc hadn’t taken the mound in a Major League game since 2014 when the Mariners brought on the southpaw in late June. With all the injuries to the Seattle pitching staff, LeBlanc has turned into a solid addition by tossing 12 innings in two starts, allowing a total of six hits and two earned runs as the M’s beat the Cardinals and Orioles at home. LeBlanc faces an Astros’ squad that has scored a total of three runs in its last two home games against left-handed starting pitchers.

Coldest pitcher: Drew Smyly, Rays (2-9, 5.33 ERA)

Things aren’t getting better for Tampa Bay, who suffered a 13-5 loss to Los Angeles on Tuesday even though Angels’ star Mike Trout didn’t even start. Smyly has been knocked around of late, giving up 18 runs and 24 hits in his last three starts, all Tampa Bay losses. The Rays’ left-hander has yet to record a victory at Tropicana Field this season, while Tampa Bay is 2-5 in his seven home starts. The only good news for the Rays is the Angels have won consecutive road games only once since late May.

                  Biggest UNDER run:
Dodgers (8-1 last nine at home)

Los Angeles played another low-scoring game at Chavez Ravine on Tuesday, falling to Baltimore, 4-1 to cash the ‘under’ of 7 ½. The Dodgers posted their fewest runs on their current homestand after scoring at least four runs in the previous four home victories, but have allowed nine runs to the O’s in two games. Bud Norris takes the mound for his second start in a Dodgers’ uniform since getting acquired from the Braves, as he tossed six scoreless innings in a 5-0 triumph over the Rockies last Friday.

                  Biggest OVER run:
                  Diamondbacks (6-0 last six)

In spite of playing in front of the smallest crowd in Chase Field history last night, Arizona’s bats woke up by plating seven runs in a 7-5 victory over San Diego. The D-backs cashed their sixth consecutive ‘over’ on this homestand, but Arizona’s pitching has allowed at least five runs in each of the past six contests. The Padres may keep that streak alive tonight as Shelby Miller tries to end his struggles on the hill for Arizona. Miller has given up 19 hits and 12 earned runs in his last two starts, while the D-backs are 1-6 in his seven outings at Chase Field.

Matchup to watch: Rangers vs. Red Sox

Texas and Boston have split the first two games of its series at Fenway Park after the Rangers pulled away from the Sox last night, 7-2. The Rangers have won three of the first five meetings between these clubs this season, as Texas has scored at least five runs in all five games. Texas owns a perfect 8-0 record in Martin Perez’s last eight starts, as the southpaw gets the ball for the Rangers tonight. Perez silenced the Red Sox bats in his last start in Arlington last month by tossing six innings and allowing one earned run in a 6-2 victory. Steven Wright was knocked around in his previous outing against Texas, giving up eight runs in 4.2 innings of a 10-3 defeat in Arlington, but the Red Sox righty owns a 5-1 record at Fenway Park this season.

                  Betcha didn’t know:
The Royals own a 2-11 record in their last 13 away games against American League opponents following Tuesday’s blowout loss at Toronto. Kansas City hopes to turn around that trend with Ian Kennedy heading to the hill tonight, but the Royals are 0-4 in his last four starts away from Kauffman Stadium.

Biggest public favorite: Mets (-220) vs. Marlins

Biggest public underdog: Orioles (+115) vs. Dodgers

Biggest line move: Yankees (-125 to -135) vs. White Sox

LEADING OFF: Fulmer chases Gibson, deGrom seeks win streak
                    July 6, 2016

A look at what's happening all around the majors today:

                    CHASING BOB

Michael Fulmer (8-2, 2.17) tries to extend his historic run when Detroit faces Cleveland. The rookie right-hander is the first Tiger since at least 1913 to allow one run or fewer in eight straight starts. Only one pitcher has done better in the majors since 1913 - Bob Gibson had 11 consecutive such starts with St. Louis in 1968 when he won the NL Cy Young Award and was named Most Valuable Player. The Tigers are 0-11 against the Indians this season.

                    GO FOR TWO

After finally getting a victory his last time out, right-hander Jacob deGrom (4-4, 2.62) tries to start a winning streak when the Mets host the Marlins. DeGrom went 10 starts between wins before beating the Cubs 10-2 last Friday. His control has been exceptional of late - he's walked one or fewer in five straight starts - and he entered Tuesday seventh in the NL in ERA. Miami counters with lefty Justin Nicolino (2-4, 5.34).

                    LIMPING CHAMPS

The Royals are without yet another 2015 All-Star after Wade Davis went on the 15-day disabled list Tuesday with a strained right forearm. The star closer is 1-0 with a 1.23 ERA and 19 saves in 30 games this season, and he joins Mike Moustakas (right knee) and Lorenzo Cain (left hamstring) on the DL. Righty Marcus Stroman (6-4, 5.08) pitches for Toronto in the series finale. He allowed one run in 6 2/3 innings against Cleveland in his most recent start after allowing 38 earned runs in his previous eight outings.

                    STRETCHED OUT

Cubs right-hander Adam Warren (3-1, 4.56) makes his first start this season after going to the minors in late June to stretch out. Warren was acquired in the offseason from the Yankees for infielder Starlin Castro, and he had success as a starter in New York, going 7-6 with a 3.98 ERA in 20 outings. The Reds will send out Anthony DeSclafani (2-0, 1.78), who has dominated through five starts after missing the beginning of the season with an oblique injury.

Pirates' Jung Ho Kang investigated for sexual assault claim
                      July 6, 2016

CHICAGO (AP) Chicago police said Tuesday that they are investigating an allegation of sexual assault against Pittsburgh Pirates infielder Jung Ho Kang.

In a statement, police said a 23-year-old woman reported being assaulted by Kang inside a hotel. Police spokesman Anthony Guglielmi said the Chicago woman met Kang through a dating app. Kang invited the woman to his hotel room on June 17, after the Pirates played the Cubs.

The woman said she blacked out, then drifted in and out of consciousness as he sexually assaulted her. The woman's name has not been released.

The 29-year-old Kang has not been charged. He pinch-hit in the 9th inning Tuesday night against the St. Louis Cardinals, singling in the Pirates' 5-2 win.

Pirates President Frank Coonelly said in a statement the team was taking the allegation ''extremely seriously'' and was cooperating with Major League Baseball. Coonelly declined further comment.

Kang, who is from South Korea, was batting .250 with 11 homers and 28 RBIs is in the second year of a four-year, $11 million contract. He was third in NL rookie of the year balloting last year.

Derek Jeter gets apology from Air Force over Facebook post
                        July 6, 2016

TAMPA, Fla. (AP) The U.S. Air Force has apologized to Derek Jeter after an active-duty member posted a photo on Facebook of a citation issued to the retired New York Yankee shortstop for boating in a restricted area near MacDill Air Force Base on the Fourth of July.

Jeter, who lives on Tampa's Davis Islands, was stopped by Air Force security forces Monday and ticketed $250 plus a $30 processing fee.

The issue came to light because of the Facebook posting.

''This action is totally inconsistent with Air Force values and the responsible airman will face the appropriate disciplinary action,'' MacDill spokesman Terry Montrose said in a news release. ''We sincerely apologize to Mr. Jeter for any inconvenience.''

Montrose declined to identify the airman Tuesday and said he didn't know whether the airman played a role in issuing the citation.

The Tampa Bay Times (http://bit.ly/29qd9xs ) reports the post had two photos, one showing the citation and another that showed someone on a boat. The caption said, ''On behalf of the Boston Red Sox, here is your ticket Derek Jeter.''

Jeter, who retired from Major League Baseball in 2014, owns a 30,000-square-foot mansion that is about 5 miles by water northeast of the MacDill boundary.

Signs posted some 1,000 meters from the shore warn boaters against entering the area. Montrose says it's common for security forces to issue citations to boaters. He says it's ''really easy to drift into those waters.''
