SAN FRANCISCO (AP) Johnny Cueto pitched a five-hitter to become the NL's first 13-game winner, and the San Francisco Giants beat the Colorado Rockies 5-1 on Wednesday night to move atop the major league standings.

San Francisco (54-33) passed the Chicago Cubs (52-32), who lost to the Cincinnati Reds earlier in the day.

Voted to the All-Star Game for the second time and a candidate to start in next week's Midsummer Classic, Cueto (13-1) allowed one run on seven hits with eight strikeouts and one walk while going the distance for the fourth time this season. The performance gave San Francisco's slumping bullpen a much-need break.

Cueto also became the first Giants pitcher since John Burkett in 1993 to win 13 games before the All-Star break.

Posey struck out looking with a runner on third in the first inning before hitting his 11th home run of the season off Rockies starter Jorge De La Rosa (5-7) in the sixth.

        REDS 5, CUBS 3

CHICAGO (AP) - Tucker Barnhart hit a go-ahead, three-run homer off Trevor Cahill in the seventh inning, and Cincinnati gave Chicago its 12th loss in 17 games.

A day after having seven players selected for next week's All-Star Game, the Cubs lost to the last-place Reds for the second time in three days and dropped below the San Francisco Giants for the majors' best record.

Chicago led 3-1 when Brandon Phillips and Jose Peraza hit consecutive one-out singles against Cahill (1-3) and Barnhart sent a 2-2 sinker into the basket in center field for his third home run this year.

Anthony DeSclafani (3-0) allowed three runs and eight hits in six innings.

        ORIOLES 6, DODGERS 4, 14 INNINGS

LOS ANGELES (AP) - Jonathan Schoop doubled in the go-ahead runs with two outs in the 14th inning, lifting Baltimore over Los Angeles in a game that included a stadium-record 36 strikeouts.

Mychal Givens (6-1) got the win. Zach Britton got his 25th save in as many chances.

Mark Trumbo hit two leadoff home runs for the Orioles, who took two out of three to win the interleague series.

Chris Hatcher (5-4) got the loss.

        TIGERS 12, INDIANS 2

CLEVELAND (AP) - Nick Castellanos had three hits, including a three-run homer, and tied his career high with five RBIs to lead Detroit and stop Cleveland's home winning streak at 13.

Rookie Michael Fulmer (9-2) allowed two runs - one earned - and five hits in six innings, improving to 7-1 with a 0.63 ERA in his last nine starts.

Josh Tomlin (9-2) retired his first nine batters, then gave up hits to four of his next five and lost for the first time since May 30. He allowed eight runs, tying his big league high, and seven hits in 4 2/3 innings.

        PIRATES 7, CARDINALS 5

ST. LOUIS (AP) - Jung Ho Kang drove in two key runs with a seventh-inning double a day after Chicago police said they were investigating an allegation of sexual assault against the infielder, and Pittsburgh got its sixth straight comeback win.

Pittsburgh has won seven consecutive overall and leapfrogged St. Louis for second place in the NL Central. It got homers from David Freese and Sean Rodriguez, and Kang's double off Jonathan Broxton (1-1) put the Pirates up 6-5 after they trailed 5-1.

Kang has not been charged, and Major League Baseball said in a statement it would ''respond fully as additional facts emerge.''

Pirates relievers combined for five scoreless innings. A.J. Schugel (2-2) got the win and Mark Melancon picked up his 26th save.

Cardinals All-Star infielder Matt Carpenter left in the third inning with a right oblique injury after swinging awkwardly.

        RED SOX 11, RANGERS 6

BOSTON (AP) - David Ortiz reached 20 homers for the 15th consecutive season and drove in three runs, and Steven Wright pitched efficiently into the seventh inning.

Wright (10-5) gave up six runs - five earned - and was pulled after Ian Desmond's two-run triple with no outs in the seventh. The 31-year-old knuckleballer was voted an All-Star for the first time in his career.

Texas starter Martin Perez (7-5) was tagged for 11 runs.

        ASTROS 9, MARINERS 8

HOUSTON (AP) - Carlos Gomez had three RBIs and finished a home run shy of the cycle and Luis Valbuena hit a tiebreaking two-run homer in the eighth inning to help Houston sweep Seattle.

The game was tied at 7 with one on and one out when Valbuena launched a towering shot off Edwin Diaz (0-2) to the second deck in right field for his second straight game with a homer.

Ken Giles (1-3) struck out two in a scoreless eighth for the win. Luke Gregerson allowed an RBI double to Robinson Cano with one out in the ninth before striking out Dae-Ho Lee with the bases loaded for his 14th save.

        NATIONALS 7, BREWERS 4

WASHINGTON (AP) - Bryce Harper hit the first of Washington's three home runs, and the Nationals returned to form.

After watching Washington score a combined two runs in the first two games of the series, manager Dusty Baker said before the finale, ''We're operating at a low energy level right now.''

Harper remedied that with a three-run shot in the first inning, the Nationals' first long ball in three games. Ryan Zimmerman chased Brewers starter Matt Garza (1-2) with a two-run drive in the fifth for a 7-4 lead.

Tanner Roark (8-5) allowed four runs and seven hits in seven innings for the Nationals.

        METS 4, MARLINS 2

NEW YORK (AP) - Wilmer Flores homered twice and Jacob deGrom pitched seven strong innings for New York.

Giancarlo Stanton went deep twice for the second consecutive day to reach 200 homers.

Following a 26-pitch first inning, deGrom (5-4) settled in and won his second straight start after going winless in his previous 10.

Left-hander Justin Nicolino (2-5) fell to 0-5 in his last 10 major league starts.

        BLUE JAYS 4, ROYALS 2

TORONTO (AP) - Michael Saunders hit a solo home run in the fourth inning and singled home the winning run in the eighth as Toronto completed a three-game sweep.

Edwin Encarnacion hit a two-out double off Kelvin Herrera (1-2) in the eighth and scored when Saunders lined a single to center.

Marcus Stroman (7-4) pitched eight innings to win for the first time in four starts. Roberto Osuna finished for his 17th save.

        WHITE SOX 5, YANKEES 0

CHICAGO (AP) - Miguel Gonzalez pitched five-hit ball over seven innings for Chicago.

Gonzalez (2-4) matched his longest outing of the season and shut down New York after it pounded out a season-high 20 hits in Tuesday's 9-0 romp.

Tim Anderson capped a four-run second with a two-run double off Michael Pineda (3-8), and the White Sox won for the sixth time in eight games.

        ANGELS 7, RAYS 2

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (AP) - All-Star Mike Trout homered and Jered Weaver pitched six innings of one-run ball for Los Angeles.

With his 100th hit, Trout became the first player to collect 100 hits and 15 home runs before the All-Star break four times before his age-25 season. Miguel Cabrera and Jimmy Foxx are the only other players to have accomplished the feat three times.

Weaver (7-7) struck out five for the Angels, giving up four hits, including Logan Forsythe's seventh home run.

Drew Smyly (2-10) gave up seven runs, four earned, on eight hits in four innings.

        PADRES 13, DIAMONDBACKS 6

PHOENIX (AP) - Ryan Schimpf homered twice, Yangervis Solarte drove in five runs, three on a homer, and San Diego beat Arizona.

Shelby Miller (2-9) allowed six runs in five innings.

Jose Dominguez (1-0) pitched 1 1/3 innings in relief of starter Colin Rea to get the win.

        PHILLIES 4, BRAVES 3

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Freddy Galvis hit a two-run homer with two outs in the eighth inning to lift Philadelphia.

Maikel Franco hit a homer for the fourth straight game. Galvis lined a 2-2 pitch off Arodys Vizcaino (1-4) into the seats in right after Franco had started the inning with a walk.

Hector Neris (3-3) got the win despite allowing a go-ahead run in the top of the eighth. Jeanmar Gomez finished for his 23rd save in 25 tries.

        TWINS 4, ATHLETICS 0

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) - Ervin Santana struck out eight and walked none in a two-hitter for Minnesota.

Santana (3-7) pitched his eighth shutout and 15th complete game, helping the Twins take two of three from the A's.

Sonny Gray (3-8) gave up one run, six hits and four walks in six innings, losing his seventh straight decision, the longest active skid in the American League.

          Armadillo: Thursday's six-pack

-- Dwyane Wade signed with Chicago, ending his 13-year run with the Heat.

-- To clear cap room, the Bulls traded Jose Calderon to the Lakers, Mike Dunleavy to the Cavaliers.

-- Wade has banked $156M (in salary) in his career; don't want to hear any whining about Miami not showing him respect- he'll turn 35 during next season.

-- Matt Harvey (shoulder) goes on DL; bad news for the Mets.

-- Orioles 6, Dodgers 4 (14)-- Chase Utley had six hits for the Dodgers.

-- 40-year old Ray Allen may be coming out of retirement, possibly to play for the Warriors. Allen last played for the Heat in 2014-- he turns 41 on July 20.

          **********

Armadillo: Thursday's List of 13: Doing some thinking out loud......

          13) Interesting article in Las Vegas Review-Journal today about minor league baseball players and the language barriers guys from Central America face when they get here. It is remarkable that this is the first year it is mandatory for major league teams to have a Spanish translator with the ballclub.

It can be even worse for players from Curacao or Asia, who speak other languages.

          12) Next Mega Millions jackpot will be at least $508M.

I worked for the New York State for 34 years; always laughed when there was a line for lottery tickets in the coffee shop, when they would bust your balls upstairs about running a football pool.

          11) Kyrie Irving has played in 309 of a possible 410 games (75.4%) in the five years he's played in the NBA with the Cavaliers. He makes $7M a year.

Over last five years, Derrick Rose has played in 166 of a possible 410 games (40.5%) for the Bulls. He makes $18M a year.

Utah Jazz TV analyst Ron Boone played in 1,041 consecutive games, from 1969-80. Boone scored 17,437 points in his career, averaging 16.8 ppg.

Maybe the big money today has softened modern athletes; the quality of player today may be higher than it used to be, but yesterday's players were tougher. .

          10) Brooklyn Nets will pay Tyler Johnson $50M over the next four years. Johnson has played 68 games for Miami in two years, starting seven. Thats $12.5M a year.

Steph Curry makes $12.1M a year. Something is amiss here.

          9) In 2013, the California Franchise Tax Board collected $229.2M in tax revenue from athletes who played games in the Golden State. With the boost in NBA salaries this yearand the Rams coming back to Los Angeles, imagine what the tax board will be collecting next year?

          8) NBA is experimenting with four referees in summer league games. I forgot who said this, but when they were switching from two to three refs a game 20-25 years ago or whenever it was, one coach said, "Just one more guy to yell at."

          7) Movie trivia: Remember League of Their Own, the movie about women's baseball with Geena Davis, Tom Hanks and Madonna?

One of the pitchers for an opposing team in the movie was Janet Jones, better known now as Wayne Gretzky's wife/Dustin Johnson's mother-in-law

          6) Since 2009, San Diego Padres have used 18 different shortstops.

          5) In his last 32 games against the Giants, Nolan Arenado has 45 RBI.

          4) Barry Bonds suggested that if Ichiro Suzuki were in the Home Run Derby, he would win it; he is not the first person I've heard say that. Next year's All-Star Game is in Miami; if Ichiro is still a Marlin then, he should be in the 2017 Home Run Derby.

          3) For whatever reason, there are four All-Star games in a row in NL parks, so this year, the American League will be the home team, even though the game is in sunny San Diego. The DH should be used in All-Star Games every year-- no pitcher should ever bat in an All-Star Game-- it is nonsensical.

          2) Arizona TV analyst Bob Brenly was describing how catchers go into a cold tub in the training room to revitalize their legs during a long baseball season.

Picture a big tub filled with cold slush; a catcher steps into that, and there is lot of pain for about two minutes. Then, Brenly says, you lose all the feeling in your legs as they go numb from the cold. After 5-7 more minutes, you get out of the tub, and when the blood rushes back into your legs and they regain feeling, they're supposed to feel re-energized. The hard part is staying in the tub during that first two minutes.

          1) I subscribe to ESPN.com: Insider because there is good info in there; with that I get a subscription to ESPN's magazine, which is a complete waste of paper. Maybe it is geared to really young people, I don't know. Lot of stuff I don't care about.

                    July 7, 2016

Hottest team: Pirates (7-0 last last seven)
Last night’s vanquishing of the Cardinals helped Pittsburgh leapfrog them into second place in the NL Central, extending its winning streak to a season-long seven, the longest such run since winning eight in a row from June 10-18, 2015. The Pirates have outscored opponents 41-18 during this stretch and have yet to be involved in a one-run game. Since they’ve been on the road, every one of the wins have been upsets that have netted a total of +990 for Pittsburgh-backers. After winning the second of a two-game set in Seattle, the Pirates swept a three-game series in Oakland and will look to claim four straight in St. Louis. Tyler Glasnow, a 22-year-old right-hander who has been dominating in the minor leagues, will try and keep the success going in his major-league debut against Cardinals standout Adam Wainwright (7-5, 4.70 ERA), who comes off a win over the Brewers where he pitched seven shutout innings. Glasnow has gone 7-2 with a 1.78 ERA at Triple-A Indianapolis, striking out 113 batters in 96.0 innings. He’s been known to have control issues, so look for the Cardinals to be patient early to see whether his nerves get the best of him. Andrew McCutchen has the most extensive history of any of the Pirates against Wainwright, batting .292 with a homer and 4 RBI in 48 at-bats. Josh Harrison is 7-for-18 (.389) against the big St. Louis righty, while Jordy Mercer has homered off him twice.

                    Coldest team:
                    Braves (3-10 last 13)
A two-out, two-run home run from Freddy Galvis off closer Arodys Vizcaino denied the Braves a win Philadelphia, where they were swept in the first leg of a seven-game road trip heading into the All-Star break. They’ll spend the next four games in Chicago, visiting the Cubs today before heading to the South Side for a three-game set with the White Sox this weekend. Tonight’s contest is a make-up game from a April 30 rainout and marks the first time the Cubs haven’t had the best record in all of MLB since early in the season’s opening month after San Francisco surpassed them late Wednesday. On the flip side, Atlanta has slipped back behind Minnesota due to this recent slump and sports the worst mark in the league (28-57, .329). The Twins are the only other team who haven’t reached the 30-win mark. Veteran Lucas Harrrell (1-0, 1.50), who won a spot start by pitching six innings of one-run ball against Miami to earn his first major-league victory since August 2013, gets the ball again for the Braves. Despite the disparity between the records for these two teams, Chicago has won just three of five in the season series, but are Thursday's biggest favorite (-270). The Cubs send Jason Hammel (7-5, 3.45) looking to put an end to a skid that has seen them lose 12 of 17. His team has lost his last five starts. Hammel surrendered five homers in four innings against the Mets in his last start. Chicago visits surging Pittsburgh this weekend.

                    Hottest pitcher:
                    Trevor Bauer (7-2, 3.02 ERA)
The Indians failed to sweep Detroit on Wednesday, surrendering the final dozen runs in a 12-2 rout after grabbing an early lead. Though they’re still on a marvelous run with wins in 16 of 19, the Tribe also got hammered 17-1 on Sunday and may be eagerly anticipating the All-Star break for a breather. They’ll try and get this four-game series against LeBron James’ Yankees by sending Bauer to the mound for his first start since June 27. Although he’s become a fixture in the rotation after opening in the bullpen, Bauer entered last Friday’s 19-inning classic at Toronto in the 15th and pitched five scoreless frames to help Cleveland set a new franchise-record with its 14th consecutive victory. He was skipped the next day, but hasn’t lost a start since May 21, winning four consecutive decisions. He hasn’t surrendered more than two earned runs in his last six appearances, a span of 42.2 innings. Bauer has struck out 40 batters while walking 12 in that span. Bauer is just 1-3 with a 4.78 ERA in five career starts against the Yanks. Brian McCann is the only member of New York’s roster to have homered against him. Ivan Nova (5-5, 5.06) will get the ball for the Bombers, who were blanked by the White Sox on Wednesday to fall to 2-4 entering the final leg of a 10-game road trip.

                    Coldest pitcher:
Chi Chi Gonzalez (0-1, 9.53 ERA)
Although Chicago's Hammel would qualify in this category too, Texas' Gonzalez, who failed to get out of the first inning on Saturday at Minnesota, fits the category nicely. The 24-year-old has walked more batters than he's struck out over 72 career innings and has largely been a massive disappointment after starting his big-league career by giving up just three runs over 30 innings in his first four starts. He'll face a Twins offense that has helped win four of five games by twice cranking out double-digits in runs after acomplishing that just once over the season's first three months. Gonzalez allowed five runs in 5.2 innings in his only appearance in against Minnesota, ending up with a no-decision at Target Field last August. Opposing starter Tyler Duffey (4-6, 5.62) has had 38 runs scored for him over his last three starts.

Biggest UNDER run: Rockies (6-1 last seven)
The Rockies played eight consecutive games that climbed well 'over' the posted total entering their final date in June. In that span, games there were 130 runs scored in games involving baseball’s highest-scoring team, an average of 16.2 per game. Colorado closed last month with a 5-3 loss to Toronto and have been held to one run or fewer in five of its six July games, including last night’s 5-1 loss to the Johnny Cueto-led Giants. Ironically, the Rockies only win and ‘over’ game thus far this month came against Madison Bumgarner. They’ll look to get the offense back on track back in Denver against the visiting Phillies, who have won eight of nine, pulling off sweeps at Arizona and home against Atlanta while taking two of three from Kansas City. Chad Bettis (6-6, 5.85) gets the ball for Colorado and is just 2-2 with a brutal 6.69 ERA at Coors, while Phillies lefty Adam Morgan (1-6, 6.31) is 1-1 with a 5.60 road ERA and will be making his first appearance pitching in Denver’s altitude. The total has been set at 12.

Biggest OVER run: Padres (4-0, last four, 7-1 last eight)
The Diamondbacks have seen the 'over' prevail in their last seven games, but they're off tonight. That bumps up the mighty Padres, who picked up a 13-6 win at Arizona to score a third series victory in four chances. Since June 15, the 'over' has gone 15-4 in games involving San Diego, with factors including inexperienced starters, a slumping bullpen and the sizzling bat of All-Star Wil Myers. Teammates Yangervis Solarte and rookie Ryan Schimpf has gotten into the act, with the latter hitting two home runs in Phoenix to increase his total to four, all coming this month. Ace Drew Pomeranz (7-7, 2.65) may keep this total down since he's allowed just one run in his last 14 innings and held the Dodgers to a single run on three hits over seven frames last time he pitched in L.A. (May 1) The Dodgers are sending Korean righty Hyun-Jin Ryu to the mound for his first start since Game 3 of the 2014 NLDS. Ryu has been out with shoulder trouble since, but has looked promising in rehab, last allowing two runs over six innings at Class-A Rancho Cucamonga. He hit 90 on the radar gun. Ryu is 28-15 with a 3.17 ERA over 56 major-league regular-season starts.

                    Matchup to watch:
                    Nationals at Mets
Although the Marlins made a big move in trading for Fernando Rodney, these two remain the top dogs in the N.L. East, setting up an important four-game set just before the break. Washington owns the most tenuous division lead in the National League, but will look to stay at least four games up by securing a split in Queens. The Mets were swept in a three-game set in D.C. to close out June, getting outscored 20-6. The teams split six May meetings, which included the Nats winning two of three at Citi Field. There has yet to be a one-run game in any of the nine encounters to date. Oddsmakers see this series opener as practically a pick'em, slightly favoring New York (-110) and 43-year-old Bartolo Colon (7-4, 2.87) at home against 21-year-old rookie Lucas Giolito (0-0, 0.00), who allowed just one hit over four innings in his major-league debut against the Mets on June 28. Colon is 1-1 against the Nats this season.

Betcha didn’t know: A’s ace Rich Hill (8-3, 2.31) returned from a month-long absence due to a groin injury in Saturday’s 4-2 loss to the hot Pirates, but he gave a great account of himself in front of scouts from contenders who are looking at him as a potential reinforcement prior to the trade deadline following a resurgent first half of 2016. The 36-year-old Boston native has already won more games this season than in any other in his 12-year career with the exception of 2007, when he went 11-8 for the Cubs, striking out a career-high 183 batters. The lefty has been fantastic through 12 starts as Oakland’s most successful reclamation project and should yield them a prospect or two prior to the trade deadline. He’ll be facing an Astros team he held to just two runs on two hits on May 1 in a game the A’s lost 2-1 against tonight’s pitcher, Doug Fister (8.5, 3.66). This should arguably be the best pitching matchup of the day and certainly offers the most size. Hill is listed 6’5. Fister is 6-foot-8.

Biggest public favorite: Indians (-160) vs. Yankees

Biggest public underdog: Padres (+117) at Dodgers

Biggest line move: Padres (+138 to +117)at Dodgers

                    • LEADING OFF: Mets begin 4-game set vs Nats, Cubs struggling
                      July 7, 2016

A look at what's happening all around the majors today.

                      BIG ONE BEFORE THE BREAK

The NL East-leading Nationals begin a four-game series to end the first half of the season against the second-place Mets with four games separating the teams. Washington's offense broke out Wednesday in a 7-4 win over Milwaukee, with Bryce Harper hitting the Nats' first homer in three games. The Mets, meanwhile, have won six of seven . Youngster Lucas Giolito (0-0, 0.00) makes his second ML start for the Nationals and will face 43-year-old Bartolo Colon (7-4, 2.87) in the opener.

                      BAD NEWS BEARS

The struggling Cubs host the Braves for one game to make up a rainout from April 30. Chicago is coming off a lost series vs. Cincinnati and has dropped 12 of its past 17 games. ''I can't connect a bunch of negative dots. It just happened,'' said manager Joe Maddon, who believes this poor stretch is more a ''snapshot'' than a sign of bigger problems. Jason Hammel (7-5, 3.45) of the Cubs takes on Lucas Harrell (1-0, 1.50), who is coming off his first major league start in more than two years.

                      RYU RETURNS

Dodgers right-hander Hyun-Jin Ryu makes his season debut and his first start since the 2014 playoffs when L.A. faces San Diego. He had shoulder surgery in May 2015 after going 14-7 with a 3.38 ERA in 2014. The Padres counter with Drew Pomeranz (7-7, 2.65).

                      BUC UP

Hard-throwing pitching prospect Tyler Glasnow will make his major league debut for Pittsburgh against St. Louis. The 6-foot-8 right-hander has a 1.78 ERA in 96 innings at Triple-A Indianapolis, runs his fastball up to 99 mph and also throws an impressive curveball. He was a fifth-round draft pick in 2011 and has ranked among the Pirates' top prospects since breaking out in Class-A in 2013. ''It's a downhill angle,'' manager Clint Hurdle said. ''It's firm. It's hard. The curveball plays. The changeup he'll use aggressively as well. He's shown the ability to throw those secondary pitches in offensive counts.'' Adam Wainwright (7-5, 4.70) - another tall right-hander with an exceptional curveball - is up for the Cardinals.

                      BAUER POWER

Indians right-hander Trevor Bauer (7-2, 3.02) tries to extend a dominant stretch when he faces the Yankees. Bauer's overpowering stuff is finally translating into outstanding results - he has a 1.81 ERA over his past seven appearances (six starts) and hasn't lost since May 21. Ivan Nova (5-5, 5.06) is up for the Yankees.
