  • LEADING OFF: Strasburg vs Kershaw in L.A., Giants streaking
    June 20, 2016

A look at what's happening all around the majors today:

    DUELING ACES

Nationals right-hander Stephen Strasburg (10-0, 2.90) and Dodgers lefty Clayton Kershaw (10-1, 1.58) square off in a matchup of two NL Cy Young Award candidates. The talented Strasburg is having perhaps the best year of his career, landing among the majors leaders in wins and strikeouts (118). Of course, he trails Kershaw in both categories. Los Angeles' ace has 133 strikeouts and just seven walks this season, and Kershaw has reached double digits in strikeouts in nine of his past 11 starts.

    GIANT WINNING STREAK

The Giants try to win their ninth straight game, and their odds look good with ace Madison Bumgarner (8-2, 1.91) facing the struggling Pirates. Pittsburgh just got swept by the NL Central-leading Cubs over the weekend, and now host NL West-leading San Francisco for four games. The Pirates counter with lefty Jeff Locke (5-5, 5.92), who has allowed 18 earned runs over his past two starts (8 2/3 innings).

    ANOTHER YOUNG CUB STUD

Prized Cubs prospect Willson Contreras is scheduled to make his first start catching right-hander John Lackey against St Louis after quite a debut at the plate. Contreras hit a pinch-hit, two-run home run in his first major league at-bat against Pittsburgh on Sunday night. The 24-year-old Contreras was hitting .350 with nine homers at Triple-A Iowa when he was called up Friday. He's played one inning of defense, but has yet to start. Manager Joe Maddon said the 37-year-old Lackey is ''almost the perfect first guy'' for Contreras.

    WINS WANTED

Shelby Miller (1-6, 7.09) is looking for just his third victory in the last calendar year when the Diamondbacks try to complete a four-game sweep of the Phillies. Miller won just once after May 17 with the Braves last season, then took six starts to get his first victory with Arizona this year. He's lost three straight since beating Atlanta on May 7.

    FRESH FISH

Paul Clemens starts against the Rockies after coming up from Triple-A to replace struggling left-hander Justin Nicolino, who was optioned to the minors. Clemens will pitch in the majors for the first time since 2014 and doesn't expect to be nervous. ''Once that first at-bat is over I should settle in,'' he said.

            ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Monday's MLB Game of the Day: Nationals at Dodgers
            ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Washington has won 10 of its last 14 contests and leads the National League East by 5 1/2 games over Miami, while the Dodgers are 6 1/2 behind streaking San Francisco in the NL West.

            Washington Nationals at Los Angeles Dodgers (A: +157, H: -180, Total: 5.5)

Two of the top starting pitchers in the major leagues square off in Los Angeles on Monday as the Washington Nationals’ Stephen Strasburg faces Dodgers ace Clayton Kershaw in the opener of a three-game series. Washington has won 10 of its last 14 contests and leads the National League East by 5 1/2 games over Miami, while the Dodgers are 6 1/2 behind streaking San Francisco in the NL West.

Monday’s series opener is expected to mark the return of Dodgers right fielder Yasiel Puig, who was batting .237 before landing on the disabled list June 3 with a strained left hamstring. Trayce Thompson has reached base safely in 14 of his last 18 games and figures to receive most of the starts in left field when Puig returns to his spot in right. The Dodgers have won three straight but will be tested by Strasburg and the Nationals, who dropped the final two contests of their four-game series in San Diego over the weekend. Michael Taylor went 4-for-4 with two home runs in Sunday’s 6-3 loss and could receive another start in center field over Ben Revere on Monday against the left-handed Kershaw.

TV: 10:10 p.m. ET, ESPN, MASN2 (Washington), SportsNet LA (Los Angeles)

            INJURY REPORT:

Nationals - RP J. Papelbon (15-Day DL, ribs).

Dodgers - RF Y. Puig (Probable Monday, hamstring), RP C. Tsao (15-Day DL, tricep).

WEATHER REPORT: It's Los Angeles. What did you expect the weather report to look like? I hope you didn't come to this section of the preview for a shocking forecast that will help tilt your wager. Sunny, clear, temperatures in the 90's, low humidity, and barely a whisper of wind. Perfect.

PITCHING MATCHUP: Nationals RH Stephen Strasburg (10-0, 2.90 ERA) vs. Dodgers LH Clayton Kershaw (10-1, 1.58)

Strasburg settled for his fourth no-decision of the season on Wednesday but continued to impress by holding the Chicago Cubs to one run and six hits while walking one and striking out eight over seven frames. The San Diego native is riding a 13-game winning streak dating back to last year, and the Nationals are 17-1 in his last 18 starts. Chase Utley is 4-for-27 with seven strikeouts against Strasburg, who is 1-0 with a 1.71 ERA in four career starts versus the Dodgers.

Kershaw won his eighth straight decision after yielding two runs and recording 11 strikeouts over 7 1/3 innings in Wednesday’s 3-2 victory over Arizona. The three-time NL Cy Young Award winner leads the majors in ERA (1.58), WHIP (0.66), strikeouts (133) and innings pitched (108.0). Bryce Harper is 1-for-12 with a home run and seven strikeouts against Kershaw, who is 9-2 with a 2.09 ERA in 12 career starts against Washington - including 7-0 with a 0.82 ERA over his last seven outings.

            TRENDS:

            * Nationals are 9-2 in their last 11 road games vs. a left-handed starter.
            * Nationals are 8-1 in Strasburgs last 9 road starts.
            * Dodgers are 5-1 in their last 6 overall.
            * Dodgers are 7-0 in Kershaws last 7 starts vs. Nationals.
            * Over is 9-1-1 in Nationals last 11 road games.
            * Under is 7-1 in Kershaws last 8 home starts vs. a team with a winning record.

CONSENSUS: Kershaw and the Dodgers are picking up 61 percent of the wagers early on Monday morning - I think bettors are just thrilled to be able to get Kershaw at such a low price. Over 5.5 is leading the way in totals picks with 60 percent of the action. View full consensus data here.

              • MLB betting cheat sheet: Rangers The AL’s Best?

The Texas Rangers are 45-25 on the season (+2777 units) and have an 8.5 game cushion in the American League West.

Power Sports breaks down all the best MLB betting notes and odds for this week's series in our MLB betting cheat sheet, including the red-hot Texas Rangers.

                Strasburg vs. Kershaw

The biggest series of the week takes place at Chavez Ravine with the Dodgers hosting the Nationals and on Monday we have the pitching matchup of the year (so far). That would be Stephen Strasburg vs. Clayton Kershaw, both of whom are sporting identical 13-1 team start records. Strasburg may have the edge in net units (+11.2 to +9.9), but Kershaw owns the edge in all personal statistics. In fact, the reigning Cy Young winner leads all of MLB in ERA (1.58), strikeouts (133) and opponents' batting average (.170). He also has issued a preposterously low seven walks, easily the fewest among starters. Washington did not score in 16 innings against Kershaw last year. But this will be the first time Kershaw has ever been opposed by Strasburg. Interestingly, Strasburg’s last 11 starts have all gone Over the total. The Under is 8-0-1 in Kershaw’s last nine, so something will have to give in that department.

                Polar Opposites

The Giants and Pirates played in the Wild Card Game a couple years ago, but right now only one appears playoff ready. That would be NL West-leading San Francisco, winners of eight straight and 27 of their last 35. That’s the franchise’s best 35-game stretch since the 1954 World Series winning team, by the way. Trending in the opposite direction would be the Pirates, who have lost 10 of their last 11 with six of those losses coming by five runs or greater, Sunday night included. Monday night is not a good spot for the Bucs, even at home, as they have to face Madison Bumgarner (more on him in a moment) while relying on Jeff Locke (12.06 ERA, 1.978 WHIP L3 starts). Since winning that Wild Card Game in 2014 (with Bumgarner as the starter), the Giants are just 1-6 vs. the Pirates (one win was in a Bumgarner start as well!), so revenge is in play.

                Rangers The AL’s Best?

I recently read an article declaring Texas to be the team to beat in the American League. I’m not so sure I would agree with that. Sure, the club currently enjoys an 8.5 game cushion in the AL West (largest division lead besides the Cubs). But in terms of run differential, they are just fourth in the A.L, trailing Boston, Cleveland and Seattle. They start the week by hosting another team I’d tab as an overachiever, that being Baltimore. I’ll again point to the fact that the Orioles might be 26-12 at Camden Yards this season (most home wins in MLB entering Monday), but they are also below .500 on the road. Despite finding themselves in first place in the AL East, the O’s are actually third in the division in terms of run differential.

                Pitcher Notes

                * You should not need me to tell you that Madison Bumgarner is really good. However, what we’ve seen so far from the Giants’ big old lefty is truly special. The Giants have won his last 10 starts with him turning in a 1.27 ERA. He’s allowed 2 ER or less in nine of those 10 starts. His last three starts have seen him post a 0.738 WHIP due to allowing just 12 hits in 20+ innings pitched.

                * Another hot pitcher, albeit a lesser known one, is Houston’s Doug Fister. He has a 9-0 team start record his last nine starts. He has a 1.40 ERA his last three. His stretch has actually been remarkable to Bumgarner’s as Fister has allowed 3 ER or less in all nine starts. Fister starts Monday against the Angels in a battle of division rivals coming off shutout wins Sunday. Houston, rather quietly, has won 17 of its last 25 games.

                Hitter Notes

                * Do you know who the best hitter in baseball is this year? That would be Washington’s Daniel Murphy, who is batting .358 for the year, while ranking second in MLB in OPS (.995) and second in the N.L. in slugging (.595).

                * Monitor the injury situation with Cubs’ leadoff man Dexter Fowler. Not only is Fowler a .290 hitter with 115 total bases, 19 doubles and 35 walks, but his .398 OBP is second on the team as well. Right now, the club is determining whether or not to place Fowler on the disabled list due to a sore right hamstring.

                Totals Trend

The Under has gone 24-11 this year at Dodger Stadium. That’s because the home team is averaging only 3.8 runs per game with a .224 batting average. Fortunate for them, they have been able to hold opponents to 3.1 runs per game with a .219 batting average.

                Monday's Weather Notes

                * There is a chance of thunderstorms in Pittsburgh tonight where the Pirates will be hosting the San Francisco Giants. The system will bring with it a 20 percent chance of rain and a 10 mph wind blowing out to left field. The total tonight is 7.5.

                * There is also a threat of thunderstorms and a 20 percent chance of rain in Cleveland (home of the NBA Champions - that just sounds weird) where the Indians will welcome the Tampa Bay Rays. There will also be a 15 mph wind blowing from left to right. The total is set at 8.5.

                * There will be a 10 mph left to right wind at Wrigley Field today where the Cubs will be taking on the rival St. Louis Cardinals. The total for tonight is currently set at 8.5.

                * It looks like there will be a 15 mph wind blowing straight out to center field at Fenway Park tonight for the game between the Red Sox and the visiting Chicago White Sox. The total for that one is set at 10.0.

                • Armadillo: Tuesday's six-pack

-- Golden State Warriors were 73-9 in regular season, 15-9 in playoffs.

-- Braves' 1B Freddie Freeman was 17-31 last week with eight RBI in seven games.

-- Trevor Story swung and missed at a pitch last night that hit him in the shoulder; I've never seen that happen before. He hit a homer on the next pitch.

-- ESPN had to be thrilled that Steven Strasburg (back) got scratched from last nite's start; they had promoted Strasburg vs Kershaw national TV game all weekend.

-- Tigers 8, Mariners 7 (12)-- Melvin Upton hit a walkoff homer for Detroit.

-- Rockies 5, Marlins 3-- Game set MLB record for most runs scored in a game, if all the runs came on solo home runs. Reynolds and Ozuna both homered twice.

                  **********

Armadillo: Tuesday's List of 13: Nobody asked me, but.......

                  13) Awkward Christmas Department: On June 20, 1997, the Cincinnati Reds called Aaron Boone up to make his major league debut; to make room on the roster for him, the Reds sent Bret Boone back to the minor leagues. His brother.

                  12) Donald Trump fired his campaign manager Monday; someday there will be a movie made about all this and it will be wildly entertaining, although I'm not sure if there is an actor out there who could pull off portraying Trump.

The Republican convention in Cleveland should be momentous; its setting up to be quite a year on Lake Erie, with the Cavaliers winning their first title, the Indians being in first place and the chaos of the Republican party headed their way next month.

                  11) Speaking of which, Cavaliers' team plane took a detour to Las Vegas on its way home from Oakand Sunday night. Team did some partyng at the Wynn Casino, before getting back to Ohio Monday afternoon. Winning is fun.

                  10) Senators failed to pass legislation that would have made it illegal for suspected terrorists to buy guns; If these nitwits don't tighten gun laws, they should all be fired on the spot, every one of them-- they're expensive and totally bleeping useless.

Seriously, who votes against a law that says suspected terrorists can't buy guns? .

                  9) Pretty cool scene in Chicago last night; Pitt's new basketball coach Kevin Stallings was at Wrigley Field, watching his son Jacob catch for the Pirates in his MLB debut. Young Stallings played his college baseball at noth Carolina; he was born in Lawrence, kansas when his dad was an assistant coach for the Jayhawks.

                  8) Matt Holliday's brother Josh coaches Oklahoma State's baseball team, which is in the College World Series for first time since 1999; their father Tom was the coach back then. In between, the Cowboys were coached by Brett Anderson's dad; had to be a little awkward when Anderson, Matt Holliday were teammates in Oakland in 2009.

                  7) Stanford's football schedule is hard this year; its three non-league games are Notre Dame/Kansas State/Rice and the Rice game is the last game of the year. Cardinal has to play USC-UCLA-Washington on consecutive Saturdays in September.

                  6) Have to admit, since daytime TV during the week is so awful, sometimes I wind up watching re-runs of NFL games on NFL Network. I often spend NFL Sundays, watching 5-6 games on one screen, so i don't hear much of hat is being said, so it is interesting to listen to what is being said, seeing if I can pick up anything of note.

                  5) Three women dressed as nuns were at Phillies game Monday afternoon, taking selfies, drinking Miller Lite and later dancing on the Phillies dugout during the 7th inning stretch with the Philly Phanatic. Turns out they are actresses in a play about nuns and were in costume to promote the play.

                  4) There is an actor named Oliver Platt; he's been in a lot of stuff-- he was a lawyer in the John Grisham movie, A Time to Kill. Platt was actually related to Princess Di-- his grandmother and Princess Di's grandfather were brother/sister.

                  3) Staten Island-Brooklyn opened the NY-Penn League season last week by playing a 20-inning game, then played extra innings again the next night. Players who just got drafted aren't used to hitting with wood bats-- its not as much fun, so you wind up with a lot of low-scoring games at that level.

                  2) Mets scored total of two runs in Jacob deGrom's last four starts; he hasn't won a game since April and his body language is beginning to look that way.

                  1) Wouldn't you love to know what David Blatt was thinking Sunday night, while the Cavaliers won their first NBA title, after firing Blatt this season, despite the team having a 30-11 record. Winning an NBA title with a neophyte head coach increases a notion that, for better or worse, the NBA is so much of a player-driven league.

Hottest team: Royals (8-2 last 10)

Kansas City heads back to Citi Field for the first time since wrapping up the franchise’s second World Series title last October. The Royals have caught fire at the right time to pull within one game of the Indians for first place in the AL Central following a 6-1 homestand. The defending champions split the first two meetings with the Mets to begin the season, but the two teams combined for nine runs in those contests. For as great as the Royals have been of late, they have dropped nine of the last 11 on the highway, while facing Mets’ right-hander Noah Syndergaard in the series opener tonight.

Coldest team: Mariners (3-7 last 10)

Seattle hasn’t had much fun going east on its current trip by dropping five of the first seven games, including Monday’s extra-innings defeat at Detroit. Granted, four of the five defeats have come by a run, so the M’s have been right there in these losses, but have dropped seven of the last nine overall. Southpaw James Paxton looks to stop the bleeding tonight for Seattle, picking up his first victory in four starts in a 6-4 triumph at Tampa Bay to avoid a sweep last week. The Mariners face former Cy Young winner and MVP Justin Verlander, who has won five of his previous six starts.

Hottest pitcher: Colby Lewis, Rangers (6-0, 2.81 ERA)

Texas definitely qualifies as the hottest team in the league by winning seven consecutive games, but the spotlight will be placed on Lewis. The 36-year old right-hander came within three outs of his first career no-hitter in his past outing at Oakland, but still managed to toss a complete-game two-hitter in a 5-1 victory. The Rangers are 5-2 in Lewis’ seven home starts this season, as he squares off against a Reds’ squad that has lost four of their last five games and is 3-10 in interleague play.

Coldest pitcher: Aaron Nola, Phillies (5-6, 3.51 ERA)

Philadelphia hits the road following a disastrous 0-6 homestand that saw the Phillies plate only nine runs. The Phillies send out their prized pitcher in Nola, who has gone backwards of late by allowing 15 hits and 12 earned runs in his past two starts, losses to the Blue Jays and Nationals. The good news for the former LSU standout is the Phillies have won five of his seven road starts, including a victory at Detroit in interleague play last month. Philadelphia heads to Minnesota trying to take down a Twins’ squad that has dropped five of its past six games.

Biggest UNDER run: Athletics (4-0 last four)

Oakland’s offense has dried up of late by scoring five runs in the past four games, while winning just once in this stretch. In two of those losses, the A’s faced pitchers who tossed complete games, including getting shut out by Angels’ right-hander Jered Weaver in Sunday’s 2-0 defeat. Sonny Gray takes the mound for Oakland as the A’s start a two-game home set with the Brewers, as the right-hander has cashed the ‘over’ in four straight games at the Coliseum.

Biggest OVER run: Padres (5-0 last five)

San Diego finished off its homestand with a pair of high-scoring victories over Washington, as the Padres head cross-country to face Baltimore in an interleague series. The Padres’ offense has picked up of late by plating at least five runs in each of the past five games, while six of the seven games of their homestand eclipsed the ‘over.’ Five of the last eight contests played away from Petco Park have finished ‘over’ the total for the Padres, as two of the ‘unders’ came on 12 ½ totals at Colorado. Luis Perdomo makes his fourth start for San Diego this season, as the first three starts for the right-hander sailed ‘over’ the total, which is 10 at Baltimore.

                            Matchup to watch:
                            Cardinals vs. Cubs

These two bitter rivals played an entertaining game to kick off their series at Wrigley Field on Monday as the Cardinals held off the Cubs, 3-2. St. Louis not only snapped a five-game losing streak, but also ended Chicago’s three-game winning streak. Chicago owns a 4-3 record against St. Louis this season, as the Cubs send out right-hander Jason Hammel to the mound. The Cubs have won all five of Hammel’s home starts this season, while the veteran beat the Cardinals as a road favorite last month, 12-3. Adam Wainwright counters for St. Louis, as the Cardinals own a 4-1 record in his past five starts away from Busch Stadium.

Betcha didn’t know: The Diamondbacks have caught fire of late by winning four straight and six of their last eight games away from Chase Field. Arizona heads north of the border to face Toronto as Patrick Corbin heads to the mound for the D-backs. The home/road splits on Corbin are remarkable as Arizona owns an 0-7 record in his seven home starts, but a solid 5-2 mark on the highway as the D-backs are a +165 away underdog against the Blue Jays tonight.

                            Biggest public favorite:
                            Marlins (-280) vs. Braves

                            Biggest public underdog:
                            Nationals (+110) at Dodgers

                            Biggest line move:
Athletics (-135 to -150) vs. Brewers

                              OCTOBER MEMORIES

Mets right-hander Noah Syndergaard (7-2, 1.91 ERA) has won five straight decisions going into his start against Ian Kennedy (5-5, 4.17) and the Royals at Citi Field. Syndergaard won 2-0 in Kansas City when the teams split two games to open the season. Of course, he also earned New York's lone World Series victory last October and rankled the Royals by firing his first pitch above the head of leadoff hitter Alcides Escobar. ... Mets catcher Travis d'Arnaud is expected to come off the disabled list after being sidelined since late April with a strained rotator cuff.

                              HOT JOHNNY

Johnny Cueto (10-1, 2.10 ERA) hasn't lost in two months, a streak he'll try to extend when the Giants play the Pirates. His last loss was on April 21 against Arizona, and since then he's 7-0 with a 1.57 ERA. He's allowed two or fewer runs in eight consecutive outings and is coming off seven dominant innings in a 10-1 win over the Brewers. Cueto is 18-4 with a 2.13 ERA in 28 career starts against the Pirates.

                              STRUGGLING SALE

Chris Sale (11-2, 2.94 ERA) tries to become the first 12-game winner in the majors when his Chicago White Sox face the Red Sox. The left-hander has struggled lately, posting a 6.07 ERA and allowing six home runs over his past five starts. He's gotten plenty of run support, though - Chicago has scored 21 runs in over his last two outings. Clay Buchholz (3-6, 5.86) pitches for Boston.

                              STILL PERFECT (RECORD)

Colby Lewis (6-0, 2.81 ERA) aims to become the fourth Rangers starter to begin a season 7-0 when he pitches at home against Cincinnati. Lewis took a perfect game into the eighth inning his last time out, a 5-1 victory at Oakland. The 36-year-old righty was the oldest pitcher to throw at least seven perfect innings since 40-year-old Randy Johnson completed a perfect game for Arizona 12 years ago.

                              HOME SWEET HOME

Miami ace Jose Fernandez (9-3, 2.57 ERA) starts on nine days' rest against last-place Atlanta. Fernandez is 23-1 with a 1.53 ERA at Marlins Park in his career.

                              CUBBIE DOWN

The Cubs host the Cardinals and try to keep up their torrid pace without Dexter Fowler , one of baseball's best players this season. The outfielder went on the 15-day disabled list Monday with a right hamstring strain. Fowler is hitting .290 with a .398 on-base percentage and was leading NL outfielders in voting for the All-Star Game in the most recent update last Wednesday.

                              WELCOME ABOARD

The Phillies plan to introduce No. 1 overall draft pick Mickey Moniak at an afternoon news conference. The high school outfielder from California signed with Philadelphia on Monday, and the team announced the move on Twitter with a picture of Moniak inking his contract.

                              CLOSER TO COUNT ON

Diamondbacks closer Brad Ziegler has converted 43 consecutive save opportunities, one shy of Grant Balfour for the sixth-best stretch in history. The side-arming righty has 15 saves and a 2.64 ERA this season. Former Dodgers closer Eric Gagne holds the record with 84 straight saves.
