      Armadillo: Friday's six-pack

-- Phillies drafted a HS outfielder from California with the first pick in the baseball amateur draft Thursday.

-- Five of the first nine picks were high school players. Two of the first seven picks were high school pitchers who had committed to play for Vanderbilt next year, so rough day for the Commodores.

-- Three of the first 47 picks were Florida Gator pitchers, two of whom were taken by the A's. Now I need Florida to get KO'd from the college baseball tournament, so their coach can't abuse their arms the way college coaches do this time of year.

-- Ohio State is one of several bigtime football schools that will start to sell beer at their games this fall. Kind of hard to believe it has taken this long.

-- Virginia Tech was 10-8 in ACC basketball last winter, despite being favoried in only two of the 18 games-- Buzz Williams is doing a hell of a job there.

-- Sharks 4, Penguins 2-- Game 6 of Stanley Cup finals is Sunday in San Jose.

      **********

Armadillo: Friday's List of 13: Random stuff with weekend here.......

      13) Pirates got rained out Monday, played a doubleheader Tuesday, lost in 10 innings Wednesday, then got on a plane and flew to Denver for one make-up game against the Rockies, then flew back to Steel City last night for this weekend's series with the Cardinals. After this weekend, Pirates will have played 27 consecutive days.

      12) Indians 5, Mariners 3-- Quietly, Cleveland is three games up in AL Central.

      11) Which brings me to this: Why on God's green earth did the Red Sox fire Terry Francona? Francona went 744-552 in eight years managing Boston, winning a couple of World Series trophies, when the Red Sox hadn't won one in 80+ years. Instead of firing the guy, they should put a statue of him in front of Fenway Park.

Well, Francona is 290-253 in Cleveland and he has the Tribe in first place, and that is a harder job than managing the wealthy Red Sox. Francona is a future Hall of Famer.

      10) And yes, I realize the Red Sox won a World Series with John Farrell in 2013, but breaking a losing culture is the hardest thing a coach has to do and Francona is the guy who did it in Boston. Still think they screwed up firing him.

      9) Baltimore Orioles are 19-4 in games where the winning run scores after the sixth inning- Buck Showalter is also a really, really good manager. .

      8) Kershaw-Cueto in San Francisco tonight. Don't see lot of totals at 5.5.

      7) If you have Jose Altuve on your fantasy team and position eligibility is one game at that position, you can now use Altuve at shortstop- he played a few innings there in Thursday's loss in Arlington. First time Altuve has played short in the majors.

      6) Yordano Ventura got a nine-game suspension, Manny Machado four games after a brawl in Baltimore Tuesday. Both appealed, which means they may not serve their penalties before the 4th of July-- justice moves slowly in baseball circles.

      5) Madison Bumgarner is the best pitcher the Giants have, but he wants to be in the Home Run Derby in San Diego next month. He has 13 career homers and a .180 career batting average. If you were Bruce Bochy, would you let him try HR Derby?

Despite his .180 batting average, Bumgarner is 0-22 batting in the playoffs.

      4) I watch a ton of latenight TV when I am up updating this space; luckily I do not watch a lot of commercials, because if I did, I'd feel like a bad person.

Commercials for preventing animal cruelty, preventing starvation in Africa, more for keeping rare species of animals from becoming extinct, or helping wounded warriors-- the magic number seems to be $18 a month for each one. Enough already.

I'm sure most of these are worthy causes, but it gets tiring constantly being hit up for money-- the government should be taking care of our veterans, by the way.

      3) Miami Marlins are 31-29, despite being outscored by 27 runs from 7th inning on, even after they pounded Minnesota's bullpen in a 10-3 win Thursday. Marlins are +17 in runs scored in the first six innings of their games.

      2) Pirates' 1B John Jaso is hitting .375 (15-40) in first inning of games, which is good for Pittsburgh, since he bats leadoff.

      1) Obscure baseball rule I never heard until last night:

In games with a retractable dome, the roof is only allowed to move once during the game. Say the game starts with the roof open, if it closed during the game, it cannot be re-opened during the game. That is why roofs are rarely opened during the game, because once the roof opens, if it were to rain, by rule the roof couldn't be closed.

LEADING OFF: Astros check Correa, Strasburg tries for 10-0
                June 10, 2016

A look at what's happening all around the majors today:

                FEELING BETTER?

The Astros will see how star shortstop Carlos Correa is feeling, a day after he sprained his left ankle running out a grounder at Texas. Correa limped off the field, exited the game and had X-rays, which were negative. The team says Correa is likely to sit out the series opener at Tampa Bay.

                STREAKING

Stephen Strasburg (9-0, 2.85 ERA) seeks to win his 13th straight decision when Washington hosts the Phillies.

                RIGHT AT HOME

Dodgers ace Clayton Kershaw (8-1, 1.47 ERA) starts the opener against the NL West-leading Giants and Johnny Cueto (9-1, 2.16). The LA lefty is 9-3 with a 1.23 ERA in 16 career games at AT&T Park.

                SKIDDING

Michael Wacha tries to snap the longest losing streak of his career when he starts for the Cardinals at PNC Park in Pittsburgh. The 2013 NLCS MVP has dropped six straight decisions - the last St. Louis pitcher to lose seven in a row was Kip Wells in 2007.

                STILL ELIGIBLE

Orioles third baseman Manny Machado can keep playing while he appeals his four-game suspension for charging the mound and punching Royals pitcher Yordano Ventura earlier this week. Ventura was penalized nine games Thursday by Major League Baseball. Machado and Ventura appealed their bans and remain active until the process is complete.

                UP AND OVER

Fresh off a four-game sweep of the Angels, the Yankees try to go over the .500 mark for the first time since they were 4-3. CC Sabathia starts at home against Mike Pelfrey and the Tigers. The Yankees might be in the market for yet another first baseman - newcomer Chris Parmelee hurt his hamstring on Thursday night, Mark Teixeira is still out for a while and young Greg Bird and veteran Dustin Ackley had shoulder surgeries that are expected to sideline them for the season.

                WELCOME BACK

Reds right-hander Anthony DeSclafani is expected to come off the 60-day disabled list and make his season debut, starting at home against Oakland. The 26-year-old injured his oblique in spring training and has been working his way back to the majors. He went 9-13 last year in his first full season in the big leagues.

                        Dodgers visit Giants
                        June 10, 2016

                        [B]
LOS ANGELES DODGERS (32-29) at SAN FRANCISCO GIANTS (36-25)

First pitch: Friday, 10:15 p.m. ET
Sportsbook.ag Line: Los Angeles -160, San Francisco +150, Total: 5.5

Two of the National League’s best pitchers will be facing off when Clayton Kershaw and the Dodgers go to San Francisco to face Johnny Cueto and the Giants.

The Dodgers are coming into the series winning four of the last six games and are looking to make up ground in the division, only being four games behind their opponent tonight in the NL West. Los Angeles is coming off a loss where they were shutout and held to four hits versus the Rockies.

The Giants, meanwhile, are starting to slide at the top of the division, losing three of the last four games. They are coming off a game where they beat the Red Sox 2-1 to split their two-game series.

The Dodgers and Giants have faced off against each other seven times this season where the Dodgers are winning the matchup 4-3. The Giants, however, have got the best of L.A. over the past three years at home, going 14-9 at AT&T Park.

Tonight will be one of the marquee pitching matchups of the year, as San Francisco throws RHP Johnny Cueto (9-1, 2.16 ERA, 73 K) on the mound versus Los Angeles’ LHP Clayton Kershaw (8-1, 1.46 ERA, 109 K). It’s worth noting that throughout the season when these pitchers have been on the mound their games have gone 16-7 in favor of the UNDER, not surprising since these two pitchers have been amongst the top starters in the league all year.

In order for the Dodgers to win they need Kershaw to be just as dominate as he’s been all year. He is leading the entire league in ERA and is tied for second in wins with nine. He has been so good all year that the Dodgers have only lost one game where he made a start. The most impressive aspect of Kershaw’s year was his incredible month of May, where he went 5-0 with three complete-game shutouts. Kershaw has thrown two games against the Giants where he recorded one win, but the Dodgers were still able to win both games. He has also pitched great in his career at AT&T Park going 9-3 with a 1.23 ERA.

The Dodgers are getting a breakout year from their 22-year-old SS Corey Seager (.283, 14 HR, 35 RBI). He has been on a tear over the last seven days, hitting .389 with five homers and seven RBI. He’s leading the team in BA, homers, RBI, and hits (66). It will also be interesting to see how manger Dave Roberts uses C Yasmani Grandal (.195, 5 HR, 19 RBI) tonight, as he is hitting .375 against Cueto in his career.

Even though Johnny Cueto is not the Giants’ official number one starter, he has been pitching like an ace all season. He has nine wins on the year and that ties him for the most in the MLB. He couldn’t be hotter when he starts at home, not allowing a single run in his past three starts at AT&T Park. San Francisco has supported Cueto with the bats as well, only losing one game where he made the start all year. In his last game, he faced St. Louis and pitched six innings of one-run ball to pick up another win. In his two starts against the Dodgers, he won both games allowing a combined seven runs. Kershaw has dominated the Giants’ players in their careers, as they are hitting a combined .165 versus Los Angeles’ ace at the plate.

They will be happy that C Buster Posey (.257, 8 HR, 26 RBI) is expected to be back in the lineup after taking a week off to heal a thumb injury. San Francisco will also be looking to their best hitter RF Hunter Pence (.298, 7 HR, 36 RBI) to have a big game. He has, however, struggled against Kershaw in his career, hitting a lousy .098 versus the lefty.

Big Sandy figures to be a daunting challenge for this group of three year olds, who, in my opinion, aren't as good as previous years.

Obviously Exaggerator is the one to beat. Finally broke through in the Preakness and really may be star.

Destin back after a break and deserves a long look. I liked him in the Derby and willing to give him another shot.

Stradivari has the dynamic duo and may be good enough. Wise guy horse.

Cherry Wine should relish the distance and may upset.

Belmont Stakes horse-by-horse betting odds, preview and picks

Preakness Stakes winner Exaggerator is the favorite at the Belmont, but is there a dark horse that can take the third leg of the Triple Crown?

With the hopes of a Triple Crown spoiled in the Preakness, Exaggerator enters this Preakness Stakes as the one to beat.

There are only two horses which competed in every leg (Exaggerator and Lani). Completing the field are a few horses which skipped the Preakness to freshen up, as well as four new faces all hoping to outrun their odds and light up the tote board on the second Saturday in June.

Here’s a horse-by-horse betting breakdown for this Saturday’s Belmont Stakes complete with odds:

                                1. Governor Malibu (Jockey – Joel Rosario, 12-1): He’s certainly a colt showing signs of improvement. Since breaking his maiden last year in November, he’s gone on to compete solely against stakes company. He’s raced over the Belmont surface twice in his career, and I’d consider that his best asset. He’s never raced over a mile and an eighth yet in his career and he may be in for a rude awakening today with the tedious extra furlongs. I think he’ll sit closer than most horses in this race, and I think that if rated well and given the slower early fractions many predict, he could definitely hold off some of the late closing horses.

                                2. Destin (Javier Castellano, 6-1): I feel he raced well in the Derby. Part of that may be because he looked like he wasn’t ridden as hard in the stretch. He skipped an extra prep before the Derby and was given eight weeks off. That definitely didn’t look like it helped his chances. I think the biggest upside to making an argument for Destin in the Belmont is his pedigree. He’s sired out of Giant’s Causeway and dam Dream of Summer. All signs point to him being able to handle the distance and I think with his best effort in here today, he’s a serious contender.

                                3. Cherry Wine (Corey J. Lanerie, 8-1): He’s coming off his best race, a second in the Preakness Stakes. He’s a deep closer in here and I cannot find myself favoring him over any of the other horses hoping to run the same race as him. He’s shown an appreciation to the added distance he’s been given career wise. Perhaps he’ll continue to surprise and finish higher than many anticipate. I think he’ll be left with too much work to do in late stretch.

                                4. Suddenbreakingnews (Mike Smith, 10-1): I think to be given his best shot he’ll have to sit much closer to the pace than he is used to racing. With that being said, I think the jockey change to Mike Smith could help him a lot. I think he also drew perfectly. His post is pretty ideal to work out a nice ground saving trip and it will be up to Smith to choose where he’ll be positioned. I think if he’s sitting in the second pack of runners, he’ll be given every opportunity to make a big move and show off the late closing kick we’ve seen before.

                                5. Stradivari (John Velazquez, 5-1): He took the biggest jump of his career last time out and showed ability to compete against the nation’s top three-year-olds. He certainly ran well enough to be given another opportunity in the Belmont. My problem with him is the morning line odds. His opening odds are a little aggressive for me. Sure, he had a good race in the Preakness, but he’s only beaten allowance horses before. He definitely has a promising pedigree and I do believe he’ll take to the distance well. I can’t back him at these low odds.

                                6. Gettysburg (Paco Lopez, 30-1): He’ll be the likely pacesetter today. Here’s something to potentially take note of: he’s owned by WinStar Farm. These connections also own Creator and hold the breeding rights to Preakness winner Exaggerator. Both of these are entered in here today and fit the racing style of closers. I wouldn’t be surprised Gettysburg really pushes the pace early on. I’d be shocked if he hangs on for a piece late.

                                7. Seeking the Soul (Florent Geroux, 30-1): I think connections were hoping the rival directly to his inside wouldn’t be entered, so he could set the pace and hope for a miracle upfront to hold on. With that being said, he hasn’t shown anything. The best part of him is the connections which have had some success with some long shots finishing second in pretty recent history: (Commanding Curve (38-1) in the Derby, and Tale of Verve (25-1) in the Preakness.

                                8. Forever d’Oro (Jose Ortiz, 30-1): Here’s another long shot trained by Dallas Stewart like the one directly to his inside. This colt has three races and is coming off the best in his career - a win against maiden company. He’ll be racing off less than two weeks rest. He'll be going twelve furlongs after narrowly breaking his maiden at eight and a half. He hasn’t faced horses with wins in their career yet, let alone wins of the graded stakes caliber.

                                9. Trojan Nation (Aaron Gryder, 30-1): Given the addition of Gettysburg to the mix, the pace scenario may play out better for closers than initially anticipated. At the end of the day, he’ll really need to show huge signs of improvement. He was a disappointing sixteenth in the Derby and has still never won a career race. Today won’t be the day. I must give credit where credit is due though; his sire has given us some of the greats like Street Sense, and Zenyatta. I thank him for that.

                                10. Lani (Yutaka Take, 20-1): This race best suits his pedigree. He’s bred thoroughly to love any added distance, the longer the better. Connections aren’t shy to say how excited they are with how Lani is taking to the Belmont surface and how comfortable he’s looked training recently. He’ll excel at this distance and I think his morning line odds are completely off. He’s definitely an overlay and a must include in the bottom half of your exotic wagers.

                                11. Exaggerator (Kent Desormeaux, 9-5): There’s no way he’ll be anywhere near his odds leading up to the Belmont Stakes, let alone at post time. He’s certainly a deserving favorite and clearly the one to beat. He wanted more pace in the Derby, got a little bit more in the Preakness, and now it looks like he’ll get way more of a faster pace upfront in the Belmont today. That only adds to his appeal in my opinion.

                                12. Brody’s Cause (Luis Saez, 20-1): He likes to make up ground in the stretch. I think his late run style will be an asset in here today. His Derby line is deceptively good, where he travelled his last quarter in 25.57; the third fastest in the race. He definitely has the pedigree to handle a mile and a half today. After skipping the Preakness I believe him to be fresh and sitting on a big effort. 20-1 are very generous odds. At that price I’ll be backing him across the board.

                                13. Creator (Irad Ortiz Jr., 10-1): He was definitely one of the biggest disappointments in the Derby finishing thirteenth. With that being said, I do think he has a good shot in here today. The field is much softer than the one he faced in the Derby and the most likely scenario of early speed suits his run style. He gets a jockey change to Irad Ortiz which I think is a brilliant choice. Ortiz has excelled at Belmont over the past couple of years and with the Belmont being much more of a rider’s race, this change will probably only help. He’ll be coming from the clouds and will rely on pace. He might just get it exactly how he wants.
