      • Tuesday's Diamond Notes
        May 17, 2016

Hottest team: Giants (7-3 last 10)
San Francisco picked up a nice amount of revenge on Arizona this past weekend after getting swept by the Diamondbacks at home last month. The Giants pulled off a four-game sweep of Arizona at Chase Field, while giving up only seven runs in the four victories. San Francisco is riding a five-game winning streak, as the Giants travel south to San Diego to face a Padres’ squad that is returning home from a 4-3 road trip. Madison Bumgarner gets the ball in the opener at Petco Park, as the Giants are 4-0 in his last four starts, while the ‘over’ has cashed each time.

Coldest team: Blue Jays (3-6 last nine)
It’s been a rough couple of days for Toronto, coming off the brawl at Texas on Sunday, followed by a 13-2 drubbing at the hands of the Rays on Monday. The Blue Jays dropped to 19-21, even though that’s a better record through 40 games than the 18-22 mark to begin last season when Toronto eventually won the AL East title. Toronto has lost three straight games at Rogers Center, as Marcus Stroman looks to turn things around and improve on his 4-0 record against Tampa Bay.

Hottest pitcher: Rick Porcello, Red Sox (6-1, 3.11 ERA)
Porcello received an extra day off following Monday’s rain-out at Kansas City. The Boston right-hander has won six of seven decisions this season, while allowing six earned runs in his last four starts. The Red Sox own a 2-1 record in his three road outings, while Porcello has received at least five runs of support in five of his seven trips to the mound. However, Porcello is winless in his last three starts against the Royals since 2014.

Coldest pitcher: Dallas Keuchel, Astros (2-5, 5.58 ERA)
The Cy Young hangover for the Houston southpaw is evident as Keuchel is winless in his last five trips to the hill. Keuchel was racked by the Red Sox his last time out, giving up 10 hits and eight earned runs in six innings of work of an 11-1 defeat, the fourth straight road loss for the left-hander. Keuchel has allowed at least five earned runs in four of his last five starts, while the Astros have plated two runs or less in each of his past four outings.

Biggest UNDER run: Diamondbacks (6-2-1 last nine at home)
Arizona’s offense exploded in Monday’s opener against the Yankees, as the D-backs eclipsed the ‘over’ for only the second time in the past nine games at Chase Field. Last night’s performance snapped a 10-game home streak of scoring four runs or less, as Arizona sends out Zack Greinke to the mound. Greinke has hit the ‘under’ in three of his last four home starts, while the Yankees have scored three runs or less in each of Michael Pineda’s previous six outings.

Biggest OVER run: Red Sox (7-0 last seven)
Boston’s offense is coming off an incredible homestand by plating 73 runs in seven games, while going ‘over’ the total in each contest. The Red Sox have finished ‘under’ the total in four of the past six games away from Fenway Park as they travel to Kansas City to begin a three-game series. The Royals were riding an 8-1 mark to the ‘over’ prior to three consecutive ‘unders’ cashed in this past weekend’s series against the Braves. In seven meetings last season between the Red Sox and Royals, the ‘over’ finished 5-1-1.

Matchup to watch: Nationals vs. Mets
These two NL East rivals meet for the first time this season as each team sends out its ace in the series opener. Max Scherzer is coming off one of the most dominant performances of his career in his last outing against the Tigers, striking out 20 in a complete game victory. The last time these teams met to close out the 2015 season at Citi Field, Scherzer struck out 17 batters as he no-hit the Mets, 2-0. Noah Syndergaard counters for New York, as the New York right-hander knocked out two home runs and allowed two earned runs in a 4-3 victory at Los Angeles in his last start. After the Mets won 11 of Syndergaard’s 14 starts at Citi Field last season, the Mets own a 1-2 record in his three home starts in 2016.

Betcha didn’t know: Last season as a member of the Red Sox, Wade Miley allowed 12 runs in 6.1 innings against the Orioles. Miley gets another shot at Baltimore to open its three-game series at Camden Yards as the Mariners have won each of his past four starts, including a 3-1 record in his four outings away from Safeco Field.

Biggest public favorite: Pirates (-175) vs. Braves

Biggest public underdog: Yankees (+120) at Diamondbacks

        Biggest line move:
White Sox (+100 to -110) vs. Astros

        • LEADING OFF: Bonds tells Harper to run, Scherzer faces Thor
          May 17, 2016

A look at what's happening all around the majors today:

          GIVEN FIRST? TAKE SECOND

Barry Bonds has some advice for Bryce Harper: If pitchers are going to put you on first base, may as well set your sights on second. Bonds, the career home run and walk leader and now Marlins hitting coach, said Harper is ''going to need to learn to steal bases and get to second base and make his teammates' job easier.'' Harper leads the majors with 41 walks and has six stolen bases this season, tying his highest mark since swiping 11 in 2013.

          CONNECT IF YOU CAN

Batters will dig in at their own risk when the Nationals' Max Scherzer (4-2, 4.15 ERA) faces the Mets' Noah Syndergaard (3-2, 2.53 ERA). It's the first start for Scherzer since he matched the major league record with 20 strikeouts in a nine-inning game against the Tigers on Wednesday. Syndergaard, meanwhile, has the highest average fastball velocity in the majors at 97.9 mph (per Fangraphs) and tied a career high with eight innings his last time out - a game in which he also slugged two homers.

          SWINGING BIG

Astros star Jose Altuve brings his suddenly remarkable power to Chicago for a three-game series against the White Sox. The 5-foot-6 second baseman hit a surprising 15 home runs last season, and now he's on pace to blow past that total before the All-Star break, slugging nine homers in his first 39 games. Altuve also entered Monday leading the majors with 2.7 wins above replacement, per Fangraphs, just ahead of the Orioles' Manny Machado and the Cubs' Dexter Fowler.

          GOOD, BUT FOR HOW LONG?

Danny Salazar (3-2, 1.90 ERA) has been excellent for the Indians, but can he be efficient? The right-hander hasn't allowed more than three runs or four hits in a game yet this season, but he also has been pulled before finishing six innings in three of his seven starts. Most recently, he walked six over five innings of one-run ball against Houston in a 5-3 loss. He faces the Reds and Alfredo Simon (1-3, 8.67 ERA).

          BIG ONES IN BALTIMORE

The AL East-leading Orioles begin a series with the Mariners after having their seven-game winning streak snapped by Detroit on Sunday. Seattle, meanwhile, was rolling atop the AL West before getting swept by the Angels over the weekend. Wade Miley (3-2, 4.91 ERA) goes for the Mariners against Ubaldo Jimenez (2-3, 4.87 ERA).

          WHIFFS AROUND

Dodgers ace Clayton Kershaw (5-1, 1.74 ERA) goes for his sixth straight double-digit strikeout game when Los Angeles hosts the Angels. Kershaw has a 57-to-2 strikeout-to-walk ratio over his last five starts.

                  -- Week 6: Falcons @ Seahawks (-9.5)

                  -- Week 7: Patriots @ Steelers (-1.5)

                  **********

Armadillo: Wednesday's List of 13: Good to be home after vacation......

                  13) 76ers won the NBA Draft Lottery, will probably take Ben Simmons, seeing as how coach Brett Brown coached Simmons' dad in Australia a long time ago.

                  12) Cavaliers 115, Raptors 84-- Cleveland is now 9-0 this postseason. Looks like the drama in this round will be in the series out west.

                  11) Warriors' Klay Thompson scored 25 points in first three quarters of Game 1 with the Thunder, but was scoreless in the fateful 4th quarter.

                  10) MLB suspended Rougned Odor eight games after Sunday's fight with Toronto, but because of a ridiculous appeal system MLB has, Odor is playing this week. Once the suspension is announced, the player should be suspended immediately. The way it is now, the player basically gets to choose when he is suspended.

                  9) Rays 12, Jays 2-- Toronto lost its last four games, was outscored 25-4 in the last two; they've also lost four in a row at home.

                  8) Indians 13, Reds 1-- Cincinnati reliever Stever Delabar issued four consecutive bases-loaded walks, first time a pitcher has done that.

                  7) Braves fired manager Fredi Gonzalez, then lost 12-9 to the Pirates, with one of its top pitching prospects giving up nine runs in less than two innings. No bueno.

                  6) Pirates gave catcher Dominic Cervelli $31M for three years, a sign of the ballclub's commitment to winning. Good for them.

                  5) Had great seats for the Marlins-Phillies game in Philly Monday night. Sat right next to ballgirl in right field. They don't have an easy job.

When the Phillies change pitchers, the ballgirl sprints out to the bullpen in centerfield to get the pitcher's jacket from the clubhouse attendant- they're not allowed to interact with the players directly. When the visiting team changes pitchers, the ballgirl down the leftfield line gets the jacket.

There are 22 ballgirls in Philly; they rotate between field duty and running the team's 50-50 raffle for charity and working in the team's recycling drive.

                  4) Restaurant recommendations: Crab Trap in Ocean City, NJ and the Anchorage Tavern in Somers Point, where I got a piece of chicken parm that looked like it could tip over Fred Flintstone's car.

                  3) A's 8, Rangers 5-- Khris Davis homered three times, the last one a walk-off grand slam to send everyone home happy. Oakland has won four of last five games since the epic pounding their pitching staff took in Boston last week.

                  2) Good to see Mets fans give Daniel Murphy an ovation on his return to Citi Field last night; he was my dad's favorite player and is hitting .399 this year.

                  1) My dad passed away a year ago today; I miss him a lot. Would be great to sit and watch a game with him one more time- he really loved baseball, especially the Mets.

Hottest team: Giants (6-0 last six)

Madison Bumgarner continued San Francisco’s fantastic run of quality pitching, going the distance in a 5-1 win at San Diego where he lost the shutout in the 9th thanks to a Matt Kemp homer. He struck out 11 hitters, got into it with Wil Myers and pitched comfortably thanks to Brandon Crawford’s second-inning 3-run homer providing cushion. The Giants shortstop drove in all five runs while going 2-for-3, cashing in as Brandon Belt and Hunter Pence reached base safely 5-of-8 times in front of him.

The Giants have given up just eight runs in the last five games will have seen the ‘under’ prevail in nine of the last 10 games. Johnny Cueto (5-1, 2.97 ERA) will look to continue that streak and has given up two runs or fewer in five of his eight starts this season, including two of the last three. He pitched his only shutout of the season against the Padres on April 26, going the distance and striking out 11, both also season-bests. Lefty Drew Pomeranz (4-3, 1.80), who has been San Diego’s best pitcher thus far, had his worst outing in a 5-4 loss in San Francisco the previous day, surrendering what remain season-highs in hits (7) and earned runs (3), lasting a season-low 4.1 innings. Pence homered off him. These NL West foes get together next week at AT&T Park after the Giants host the Cubs this weekend.

Coldest team: Braves (2-10 last 12)

After firing Fredi Gonzalez on Tuesday, the Braves fell behind 9-0 as rookie Aaron Blair got rocked by the Pirates failing to get out of the second inning. It was a nasty welcome to the big leagues for interim manager Brian Snitker, getting a 125-game tryout to keep the gig. The Pirates pounded out a season-high 21 hits in a 12-9 win, though Atlanta was encouraged by young CF Mallex Smith hitting two more home runs, becoming the first player on the roster besides Freddie Freeman with more than one.
We’ll see if things can go any better as the team sends staff ace Julio Teheran (0-4, 3.17) out to the mound in order to slow down the Bucs bats, which have produced 20 runs over the first two contests of the four-game series. It’s not exactly reassuring that the Braves have averaged just 2.1 runs per game in Teheran’s starts. Pittsburgh is countering with Francisco Liriano (3-2, 4.99). The teams conclude this set Thursday before Atlanta ventures to Philly for the weekend.

Hottest pitcher: Chris Tillman (5-1, 2.58 ERA)

Tillman has always been better at Camden Yards than on the road, so he’s been fortunate since this will his seventh start in nine outings this season. He’s 4-0 with a 1.89 ERA at home and will be looking to help the Orioles bounce back from a 10-0 loss to Seattle on Monday, their second loss in a row after seven consecutive wins. Baltimore has lost three straight just once this season (April 24-26). It’s worth pointing out that Mariners star Robinson Cano is 14-for-31 (.452) against Tillman throughout his career, homering twice.

Coldest pitcher: Shelby Miller (1-4, 6.94 ERA)

Miller finally broke through with his first win on May 7 – about five months too late for hopeful, exasperated Diamondbacks fans – but that breakthrough came against the lowly Braves, his former team. In Atlanta, too. He lost again in his last outing against San Francisco, so he’s now 0-4 with a 7.46 ERA in Phoenix as he steps in to try and help sweep New York. Miller gave up seven runs in five innings in his only career outing against the Yankees and will try to overcome the pressure that follows him since most Arizona fans felt the team grossly over-spent for him, dealing Dansby Swanson, the 2015 MLB Draft’s top pick, in addition to Ender Inciarte and the aforementioned Blair.

Biggest UNDER run: Rockies (6-2 last eight)

The Giants own this distinction too, but what Colorado has done may actually be more impressive since four of those 'under' results have come in at Coors Field. Chad Bettis kept the run going on Tuesday in St. Louis, holding down the Cardinals in a 3-1 upset to help start a nine-game road trip in style. Lefty Chris Rusin, making just his fourth start after initially coming out of the bullpen, has yet to get out of the sixth inning this season and has never had a winning season in the majors. He'll be opposed by Adam Wainwright, who has helped the Cards win each of the last four times he's taken the mound.

Biggest OVER run: Red Sox (8-0 last eight)

Boston was rained out in Kansas City on Monday and will play a day-night doubleheader here, hoping to continue a run that has seen them win seven of nine despite Tuesday's 8-4 loss. The Royals did the heavy lifting in extending the streak last night after the Red Sox scored 73 runs on their most recent seven-game homestand to start this flurry. They'll return home after the night portion of this twinbill for a six-game set against the Indians and Rockies. Extending this streak could prove difficult given the pitching matchups on Wednesday, as Boston sends Steven Wright (3-3, 2.36) out for the opener against solid veteran Ian Kennedy (4-3, 3.25), while David Price (5-1, 6.00) squares off against Edinson Volquez (4-3, 3.51) in the nightcap.

Matchup to watch: Astros at White Sox

Chicago is looking to avoid its first four-game losing streak of the season as they send unbeaten Mat Latos (5-0, 3.40) to the mound. After falling just short in a 6-5, 11-inning loss to Houston in the first of a 10-game homestand, the White Sox have to be aware that Cleveland, Kansas City and Detroit are on winning streaks and charging hard while they've dropped five of six. Latos, despite his unbeaten mark, has failed to get out of the sixth inning in his last three starts, which is one reason why an ERA that was at 0.74 through four starts now looks ordinary. The Astros remain in last place in the AL West, but have won in Doug Fister's last three starts. They're without OF Carlos Gomez (ribs), who has gone on the DL. Chicago is hoping to have home run leader Todd Frazier back from a bout with the flu.

Betcha didn’t know: Cleveland is sending out Mike Clevinger for his big league debut after an impressive 5-0 mark in Triple-A. He's of Native American descent and had the second-lowest WHIP and third-most strikeouts in all of Double-A last year, earning organizational Player of the Year honors. Clevinger is undoubtedly hoping to get some of the same run support he's seen his offense put together of late since the Indians have outscored the Bengals, er, Reds, 28-7 over a two-game stint at Progressive Field to open this series, which shifts to Cincinnati for these next two games.

Biggest public favorite: Cubs (-180) at Brewers

Biggest public underdog: Rockies (+155) at Cardinals

Biggest line move: Yankees (-120 to -140) vs. Diamondbacks

                            • Braves fire manager Fredi Gonzalez
                              May 17, 2016

ATLANTA (AP) The Atlanta Braves on Tuesday fired manager Fredi Gonzalez, who couldn't survive the worst record in the majors.

Braves general manager John Coppolella confirmed the firing of Gonzalez. This was Gonzalez sixth season with the Braves, who are in the midst of a dismal stretch: They have lost two straight and eight of 10, have baseball's worst record at 9-28 and already are 13 1/2 games out of first place in the NL East.

Brian Snitker, who has been manager of the Braves' Triple-A Gwinnett team, will move up as interim manager. Snitker was Atlanta's third-base coach from 2006 to 2013, also following Gonzalez in that role when Gonzalez was named manager of the Marlins.

Snitker also had two stints with Atlanta as the bullpen coach in 1985 and from 1988 to 1990.

The Braves also fired bench coach Carlos Tosca. Gwinnett pitching coach Marty Reed has joined the club as bullpen coach. Terry Pendleton will move from first base coach to bench coach and Eddie Perez will move from bullpen coach to first base coach.

Gonzalez, 52, replaced Hall of Fame manager Bobby Cox, who retired following the 2010 season. Gonzalez was the only Latino manager in the majors and he is the first Braves manager to be fired since Russ Nixon in 1990.

The Braves won the NL East with 96 wins in 2013 but fell to 79-83 the following season.

Since then, the Braves have shifted to rebuilding mode, seeking young pitchers in a series of moves that stripped the roster of such established veterans as Justin Upton, Jason Heyward, Andrelton Simmons, Craig Kimbrel and Shelby Miller.

Expectations were low this season as the Braves set their focus on moving into their new SunTrust Park in 2017. Even so, it was clear Coppolella and team president John Hart didn't expect to have the worst record in the majors.

The Braves lost their first nine games. They had a brief recovery with four straight wins but haven't been able to put together another winning streak. They lost two of three at Kansas City to open a 10-game road trip and also lost Monday night's series opener at Pittsburgh, 8-5.

Gonzalez was hurt by especially poor play at home. The Braves are 2-17 at Turner Field.

Gonzalez was 434-413 with the Braves. He was 276-279 in four seasons with the Marlins.

The Braves were competitive through the first half of the 2015 season, posting a 42-42 mark. Injuries and trades helped fuel a free-fall for a 67-95 finish, and the poor results continued this season.

The poor start led to increased questions about Gonzalez's status, and he recently addressed the uncertainty.

''Nothing is for sure in our business, so you hold your head up, make good decisions and go forward and see what happens,'' he said.

Gonzalez also recently said he worried he wouldn't survive the slow start to see a turnaround when more young players are ready for the majors.

''My biggest concern is you go through these lumps, you see these young guys come in and then you get let go, you get dismissed, and the guys are here the next year and they're winning everything,'' Gonzalez said.

''But again, this is a cruel business and it's part of our job.''

                              • LEADING OFF: Tillman faces M's, tries for 5th straight win
                                May 18, 2016

A look at what's happening all around the majors today:

                                OLD FRIENDS

Orioles right-hander Chris Tillman (5-1, 2.58 ERA) tries to win his fifth straight start when he faces the Mariners, the team that drafted him in 2006. Tillman came to Baltimore in the 2008 trade for Erik Bedard and is 6-0 lifetime against Seattle.

                                KID STUFF

Two of the Astros' top prospects, Colin Moran and Tony Kemp, are expected to make their first major league starts when struggling Houston plays the White Sox. Moran was the sixth overall pick in the 2013 amateur draft by Miami and is a .299 career hitter in the minors. The 5-foot-6 Kemp has been an on-base machine in the minors while playing second base and the outfield. ''They're both going to play different roles here. We're looking to jump-start our offense for a little more consistency,'' manager A.J. Hinch said.

                                DOUBLE DIP

Boston plays a day-night doubleheader at World Series champion Kansas City to make up Monday's rainout. Steven Wright and David Price are scheduled to pitch for the Red Sox, with Ian Kennedy and Edinson Volquez going for the Royals. After a difficult start with his new team this season, Price (5-1) ironed out a mechanical glitch in his delivery before his most recent outing and struck out 12 last Thursday in an 11-1 win over Houston, lowering his ERA to 6.00.

                                NEW VOICE

Interim manager Brian Snitker gets his second chance at his first win in charge of the struggling Atlanta Braves (9-29). Snitker was the skipper at Triple-A Gwinnett before getting promoted Tuesday when Atlanta fired Fredi Gonzalez. In Snitker's first game at the helm, the Braves lost 12-9 in Pittsburgh. This time, they'll turn to right-hander Julio Teheran (0-4, 3.17 ERA). Atlanta is averaging just 2.12 runs per game when Teheran starts this season.

                                FILLING IN

Bench coach DeMarlo Hale manages the Blue Jays for the second consecutive night against Tampa Bay while John Gibbons serves a three-game suspension. Gibbons was penalized for returning to the field following an earlier ejection Sunday and inciting additional fighting during a brawl with the Rangers. Major League Baseball disciplined 14 players and staff members Tuesday for their roles in the fight. The stiffest punishment went to Texas 2B Rougned Odor, suspended eight games and fined $5,000 for punching Toronto slugger Jose Bautista in the jaw. Odor appealed and is allowed to play pending a resolution.

                                SNAKE BIT

Diamondbacks pitcher Shelby Miller (1-4, 6.94 ERA) tries to turn things around against the Yankees. Miller has lost three of his past four starts and has more walks (23) than strikeouts this season (22). Arizona acquired Miller from Atlanta in the offseason for a package headlined by Dansby Swanson, the top pick in the 2015 amateur draft. Swanson is playing very well in Double-A with the Braves and also has more walks than strikeouts.

                                POM KING

The Padres get a tough test in Giants right-hander Johnny Cueto (5-1, 2.97 ERA), but fortunately for San Diego, lefty Drew Pomeranz (4-3, 1.80) hasn't needed much run support lately. He's thrown 11 scoreless innings over his last two starts, a 2-0 win over the Mets and a 1-0 victory over the Cubs.
