      • MLB betting cheat sheet: Not Phillin’ It

The Phillies record in 1-run games has been outstanding to this point, but is that kind of run sustainable?

Power Sports breaks down all the need-to-know betting notes for this weekend's MLB series, including whether the surprising Phillies can keep their hot start going.

        Not Phillin’ It

How are the Phillies 19-15 despite a -30 run differential that’s sixth worst in all of baseball (Thursday result pending)? Well, their 12-3 record in games decided by one run is your answer. That’s easily MLB’s best record in that situation and given how absurd it is at this point of the season (Mariners are #2 at 8-5), I would expect the losses to start piling up sooner rather than later. Especially seeing as their offense has scored the second fewest runs in all of baseball. Interestingly, they will be hosting the Reds this weekend, so the Phillies should be favored in most, if not all, games. There might just be a good underdog opportunity in there or at least go with Cincinnati on the run line if the juice isn’t too high.

        A’s Pitching Gets an ‘F’

Over the last four games, Oakland pitching has surrendered a ghastly 51 runs. 40 of those were scored by the Red Sox, who became the first team since the ’99 Indians to score 13 or more runs in three consecutive games. The A’s pitching staff now owns an 8.58 ERA in May, which is obviously the driving force behind them losing 9 of the last 10 games.

But maybe there is hope on the horizon as this weekend sees the club traveling to Tampa Bay. In the last column, I warned you that it might be time to “sell high” on the Rays and sure enough they got swept in Seattle. Minnesota is the only A.L. team to have scored fewer runs this year than TB. So, in a battle of two teams that just got swept, expect the A’s pitching to do the only thing it can – and that’s improve.

        Showalter Defying Expectations – Again

Besides Boston and Seattle, one other team swept its last series and that is Baltimore, the surprising leaders of the AL East. Of course, it helps that they played the Twins at home. Buck Showalter’s club gets to stay at Camden Yards this weekend, but it be a tougher test with Detroit coming to town. I say that knowing full well that the Tigers have dropped eight of nine and just struck out 20 times at the hands of Max Scherzer on Wednesday. But don’t be surprised if they claw their way to a series split here even though the O’s are a MLB-best 13-5 at home.

        Hitting Notes

*Boston’s lineup is on a ridiculous tear thanks to that series with Oakland and their lineup is now batting a collective .336 the last seven games. Leading the charge has been Jackie Bradley, Jr, who had six RBI’s hitting in the 9-spot in the batting order on Wednesday. Bradley Jr is currently working on a 17-game hitting streak and is 13 for his last 27 at the plate with five home runs. The red hot Red Sox have caught the Cubs for most runs scored in all of MLB entering Thursday.

*There was a ton of debate Wednesday night on social media over a decision made by Cubs’ manager Joe Maddon to let the struggling Jorge Solar (now 2 for his last 15) with the game on the line. In the midst of a historic start for the team, Solar has been dreadful so far (.185/.276/.292) and is on the verge of working his way out of the everyday lineup. He struck out four times on Wednesday and his OPS is .536.

        Pitching Notes

*Losing David Price to AL East rival Boston meant someone needed to step up and fill a void at the front end of Toronto’s rotation. So far, that person has been J.A. Happ, who is now 5-0 after blanking the Giants for 8 2/3 innings on Tuesday. Happ’s current ERA (2.05) and WHIP (1.16) are significantly better than his career marks in those two categories, so I’m interested to see if this can continue. His next turn in the rotation doesn’t come until Monday, so that could be a break for Texas, who the Blue Jays visit this weekend.

*Two pitchers I’ve previously written about in this column (for very different reasons) will square off Friday in the opener of a three-game set. Chicago’s Chris Sale has emerged as the early Cy Young favorite in the American League thanks to a 7-0 record with a 1.79 ERA and 0.775 WHIP. On the other side of the ledger, we have Luis Severino for the Yankees who is now 0-5 in his six starts (0-6 TSR) with a 6.12 ERA and 1.484 WHIP. This shapes up as the biggest pitching mismatch of the season, at least on paper.

        Totals Trend

Wouldn’t you know that it is Toronto that occupies the mantle of MLB’s top Under team? Last year, they led the league in offense, but are down more than a full run per game in that department in 2016. Overall, the Under is 23-10-3 in their games this season including a 8-2-1 mark here in May.

        Umpire Trend

Larazo Diaz hasn't had a home team bias when he's been behind the plate. The road team is 6-0 the last six times he has been calling balls an strikes. That's where he'll be when the Padres (+124) visit the Brewers (-134) Friday.

        Friday's Weather Report

        * There is a 60 percent chance of rain and a 6-8 mile per hour wind blowing out to right field when the Cubs host the Pirates today at Wrigley Field. The total for the game is currently off the board.

        * There is rain expected in New York this evening with the Yankees scheduled to play the White Sox. there will be a 6-8 mile per hour wind gusting out to right field. The total for the game is currently at 7.0.

        * In Philadelphia, there is a 74 percent chance of rain and 7-8 mile per hour wind blowing in from left field for the Phillies game versus the Reds. The forecast is expected to clear up as the evening rolls along. The total is currently 8.5.

        * There is a 64 percent chance of rain and even a chance of thunderstorms tonight at Fenway Park with the Red Sox scheduled to host the Astros. There will be a 5-7 mile per hour wind blowing out to the Green Monster. The total is currently 9.0.

        * Not that pitchers need it at Safeco Field, but there will be a pitchers wind gusting there tonight for the Mariners game against the Angels, wit gusts coming in from left field at 10-12 miles per hour. The total is currently 8.0.

        • Friday's Diamond Notes
          May 13, 2016

Hottest team: Mariners (10-3 last 13)
Seattle has ascended to the top of the AL West with a 21-13 record, while coming off a three-game sweep of Tampa Bay. The Mariners continue their homestand with the struggling Angels invading Safeco Field, as Seattle has won six consecutive series openers. During this current run, the M’s have won eight of their past 10 home games, while scoring 23 runs in their last four home victories. Nathan Karns takes the mound in the series opener, as the Mariners have won five straight starts made by the Seattle right-hander.

Coldest team: Twins (1-9 last 10)
It’s been a tough go for Minnesota through the first six weeks of the season, owning a dreadful 8-25 record. The Twins have lost 15 of 17 games away from Target Field, as their last road victory came as a +155 underdog at Houston on May 2. Minnesota’s pitching hasn’t helped the cause during this seven-game losing streak, allowing at least five runs in six of those defeats. Ricky Nolasco has given up 16 runs in his past three outings for Minnesota, but the Twins beat the Indians the last time the right-hander faced them in late April.

          Hottest pitcher:
Chris Sale, White Sox (7-0, 1.79 ERA)
It’s hard to find a pitcher in the American League performing better than Sale, who has won all seven of his decisions. The Chicago ace has yielded five earned runs in his last five outings, while the Sox have outscored their opponents, 24-4 in his past three trips to the mound. Sale has lost his last two starts to the Yankees since 2014 (both in the Bronx), while giving up three earned runs in seven innings of a 3-2 defeat to New York last September.

Coldest pitcher: R.A. Dickey, Blue Jays (1-4, 5.18 ERA)
Toronto heads to Texas after taking three of four from the Rangers at home earlier this month. Dickey is winless in his last six outings, including a 2-1 defeat to Texas on May 2, in spite of scattering six hits in 6.1 innings. The Jays are 1-2 in Dickey’s three road starts, while picking up a no-decision in his last visit to Arlington in the ALDS last October as the Jays beat the Rangers, 8-4. In Dickey’s past five trips to the mound, the Toronto offense hasn’t helped much, scoring three runs or less each time.

Biggest UNDER run: Rays (13-4 at home)
Tampa Bay closed out its road trip at Seattle with consecutive ‘overs,’ while allowing 17 runs in the three losses. The Rays’ offense hasn’t plated many runs at home this season, as Tampa Bay has finished ‘under’ the total in seven of the last nine games at Tropicana Field. Tampa Bay has cashed the ‘under’ in four of the past five home series openers, while right-hander Jake Odorizzi is 3-0 to the ‘under’ in his last three starts for the Rays.

          Biggest OVER run:
          Royals (5-0 last five)
Kansas City has played in plenty of high-scoring games of late, eclipsing the ‘over’ in seven of the last nine contests. The Royals’ pitching couldn’t slow down the Yankees this week, allowing at least six runs in each of their three losses in the four-game series. In the past two home games, Kansas City has given up 19 runs, as the Royals welcome in the dreadful Braves tonight. Atlanta has finished ‘over’ the total in seven of the last 10 road contests, while Julio Teheran is 2-0 to the ‘over’ in his two away starts.

          Matchup to watch:
          Cardinals vs. Dodgers
St. Louis has turned things around since a slow start, as the Cardinals are one win away from 20 victories on the season. The Cardinals remain in Southern California after pulling off a three-game sweep the Angels, while improving to 7-3 in the past 10 contests. The Dodgers blanked the Mets on Thursday to pick up a four-game split, as Ross Stripling takes the mound for Los Angeles in the opener. Stripling allowed one hit in six innings in his last outing at Toronto, a 4-2 victory as a +140 underdog. However, Stripling has lost his last two starts at Dodger Stadium, giving up eight earned runs in defeats to the Marlins and Padres. Michael Wacha is winless in his past three starts for St. Louis, while the Cardinals own a 1-2 record in his three road outings.

          Betcha didn’t know:
The Mets have won 11 consecutive meetings with the Rockies dating back to 2014, including a three-game sweep at Coors Field last season. New York has compiled a 6-3 record in Matt Harvey’s last nine starts as a road favorite, as the New York right-hander makes his first career start at Coors Field.

Biggest public favorite: Red Sox (-155) vs. Astros

Biggest public underdog: Rangers (+100) vs. Blue Jays

Biggest line move: Rockies (+125 to +105) vs. Mets

          • From Harper to Scherzer, Nats in news
            May 12, 2016

WASHINGTON (AP) Max Scherzer's record-tying 20-strikeout performance was only the latest in a recent series of newsworthy moments for the Washington Nationals, one right after the other.

If things were quiet around Bryce Harper and Co. on Thursday, perhaps it's only because the club had a day off.

The way things have been going lately, there's no telling what will happen when the Nationals host the Miami Marlins for a four-game series starting Friday.

            Start with Scherzer.

Only three other pitchers - Roger Clemens (twice), Kerry Wood and Randy Johnson - managed to strike out 20 batters in nine innings before Scherzer did it in a 3-2 victory over the Detroit Tigers on Wednesday night.

Remarkably, Scherzer threw 96 of 119 pitches for strikes and did not walk anyone.

Asked what was working so well for Scherzer, Tigers manager Brad Ausmus replied: ''What wasn't working? That's an easier question: Nothing.''

That's been the case before for the right-hander in his short time in a Nationals uniform. Since moving from Detroit to Washington ahead of last season as a $210 million free agent, Scherzer has thrown two no-hitters plus a one-hitter.

''I think it was the first inning, I ran in and said to (Jayson Werth), `That's Max.' That's the guy that goes out there and competes, and goes about it and is an animal out there. I mean, he gets on the mound and goes,'' Harper said Wednesday. ''Those are the nights that it is fun to watch him pitch.''

Harper himself played pivotal roles in some of the unusual happenings during what's been quite a week for the Nationals. Here's a look:

            SUNDAY: ALL THOSE FREE PASSES

Harper tied a major league record by walking six times in a loss at the Chicago Cubs that capped a four-game sweep. Hitting one spot behind him was Ryan Zimmerman, who failed to make the Cubs pay for pitching around the 2015 NL MVP, going 1 for 7 and leaving 14 runners on base. That sparked a debate in D.C. about whether it was time to move Zimmerman out of the cleanup spot.

            MONDAY: STRASBURG'S DEAL, HARPER'S EJECTION, ROBINSON'S WALKOFF

While Stephen Strasburg was on the mound in the series opener against Detroit, word emerged that the No. 1 overall pick in the 2009 amateur draft had agreed to a $175 million, seven-year contract. It was a stunning development given that the right-hander would have been eligible for free agency this offseason - and his agent, Scott Boras, loves seeing what clients can draw on the open market. Meanwhile, in the bottom of the ninth, Harper was ejected by home plate umpire Brian Knight after a teammate struck out. Moments later, pinch hitter Clint Robinson - who acknowledged afterward he thought it was only the eighth inning - hit the first game-ending homer of his career. Harper rushed onto the field to join the rest of the celebrating Nationals but took a moment to point toward Knight and swear at him.

TUESDAY: THE SHUTDOWN WAS A GOOD THING; ZIMMERMAN GOES DEEP

The Nationals finally acknowledged publicly that Strasburg had a new contract. At a news conference, he and Boras spoke about how GM Mike Rizzo's much-debated decision to shut Strasburg down before the 2012 playoffs scored points with the pitcher and his family. In that night's game, Zimmerman showed signs of breaking out of his funk, homering twice.

            WEDNESDAY: 20 K'S; SORRY, MOM

Before Scherzer made history - and, as a footnote, before second baseman Daniel Murphy delivered his fourth consecutive multi-hit game to raise his batting average to a majors-best .409 - Major League Baseball announced that Harper would be suspended for one game and fined for what happened Monday. Harper appealed the punishment, so was able to play Wednesday. After the game, he spoke about being caught on TV, yelling what he described as ''a couple choice words'' at the umpire: ''I think the only person that's pretty upset that saw it is my mom. I told her, `Sorry.' I texted her.''

            • LEADING OFF: Sale seeks 8th win, Pirates try to slow Cubs
              May 13, 2016

A look at what's happening all around the majors today:

              GOING STREAKING

Chris Sale (7-0, 1.79 ERA) looks to become the majors' first eight-game winner this season when the White Sox face struggling Luis Severino (0-5, 6.12) and the Yankees. Sale has allowed just three homers over 50 1/3 innings this season, while Severino allowed three homers just in his previous start. Severino is one loss shy of tying Phil Hughes for the majors lead.

              TOUGH OUTS

The Pirates try to slow down the majors-leading Cubs in a three-game series at Wrigley Field. Chicago (.368) and Pittsburgh (.360) are first and second in the majors in on-base percentage, with the Cubs also holding a commanding MLB lead with 172 walks. At 25-8, Chicago has a seven-game lead on the second-place Pirates in the NL Central.

              KID COMES BACK

Lance McCullers makes his first appearance of 2016 after doing a DL stint for a sore throwing shoulder. The 22-year-old is coming off a solid rookie season for the Astros in which he went 6-7 with a 3.22 ERA. He'll face knuckleballer Steven Wright (3-3, 1.52) and the Boston Red Sox.

              GETTING BETTER

Matt Harvey (3-4, 4.50) and Jon Gray (0-1, 5.40) are trending in the right direction after disappointing starts to the season. Harvey struck out 10 and allowed two runs over six innings in his last start for the Mets, while Gray has dominated at San Francisco and San Diego in his past two starts for the Rockies after posting an 11.42 ERA in April. They face each other at Coors Field.

              ROSS'S LOSSES

Dodgers RHP Ross Stripling has flirted with a big league no-hitter, but he's yet to get his first MLB victory. The 26-year-old is 0-2 in six starts despite a solid 3.82 ERA to begin his career. His last start was one of his best yet, as he allowed a run on one hit over six innings in a 4-2 victory at Toronto. He faces the Cardinals and Michael Wacha (2-3, 3.12).

              • Pitchers not always pushovers at the plate
                May 12, 2016

The New York Mets already had one of the game's most celebrated starting rotations, and now their pitchers are outdoing each other in an entirely unexpected manner.

With their bats, not their arms.

Last weekend, Bartolo Colon hit the first homer of his career at age 42 in San Diego. It was a moment that seemed hard to top, but Noah Syndergaard did his best when he went deep twice in Los Angeles against the Dodgers on Wednesday night. This wacky stretch of unlikely slugging is a reminder that as overmatched as pitchers are at the plate, they are capable of making solid contact on occasion.

''We definitely take pride in it,'' San Diego right-hander Colin Rea said. ''We compete against each other as a staff. We spend more time on it when we are at home just because we have more time and we can take BP on the field. Usually on the road we don't do too much.''

National League pitchers combined for 23 homers last year, with Madison Bumgarner of San Francisco setting the pace with five. Bumgarner actually posted a .743 OPS last season in 77 at-bats, an unusually respectable mark for a pitcher.

''We've seen it with Bumgarner, where they win their own game,'' Giants manager Bruce Bochy said. ''It's pretty cool to see, like the old Little League days, when the star guy was pitching and did all the hitting.''

Bumgarner is 2 for 20 to start this season, but one of his hits was a homer. Jake Arrieta and Adam Wainwright have also gone deep in 2016.

So has Kenta Maeda, the Los Angeles right-hander who gave up the two homers by Syndergaard.

''It was a dream,'' Syndergaard said. ''It wasn't real.''

Syndergaard is hitting .200 for his young career, and he now has three home runs to his credit. So he's not an automatic out, and at 6-foot-6, 240 pounds, he can drive the ball when he makes contact.

''When you're that big and strong obviously, if you can put that barrel on the ball you can hit a homer,'' Mets manager Terry Collins said. ''He does handle the bat pretty well, but you never expect any pitcher to a hit home run.''

There's been plenty of speculation recently that the designated hitter could eventually come to the National League, standardizing that rule across all of baseball and eliminating the spectacle of pitchers trying to hit. But Commissioner Rob Manfred has said he's OK with the status quo.

In fact, last year Manfred joked that the DH could deprive baseball fans of the chance to watch Colon hit, which he called ''a great source of entertainment.'' Little did anyone realize that the portly right-hander would provide one of 2016's most endearing moments by hitting a home run.

For every homer, of course, there's someone on the other end who allowed it, and nobody wants to give one up to a pitcher. Rea said it's important to avoid taking anybody lightly when you're on the mound.

''There are some good-hitting pitchers out there. You pitch them the way you think they would pitch you,'' Rea said. ''It is hard to see spin when you don't see it all the time. It is tough to hit curveballs or sliders. You can't be afraid to throw those in there every once in a while. They can time up a fastball just like any other hitter.''

As for his own approach at the plate, Rea keeps it simple.

''If I see a fastball I try to hit it as hard as I can,'' he said. ''We take pride in our bunting too. That can also lead into you staying out there for an extra inning or two if the manager has faith in you to get the bunt down. But if there's nobody on and they say it is all right to swing, you try to hit the ball as hard as you can.''

                      -- Georgia Tech @ Boston College (-4)

                      -- UCLA @ Texas A&M (even)

-- USC vs Alabama (-10) (Arlington, TX)

                      **********

Armadillo: Saturday's List of 13: Clearing out a cluttered mind.......

                      13) Miami 103, Toronto 91-- Heat forces a Game 7 Sunday in Ontario.

                      12) In franchise history, Toronto is 0-7 when it has the lead in a series.

                      11) Miami won its last eight elimination games.

                      10) Home teams are 99-24 SU in NBA Game 7's.

                      9) Philadelphia Phillies have played the most road games in baseball; 19 of their next 24 games are at home. People in Philly are starting to get excited.

                      8) Tampa Bay 3, Pittsburgh 1- Lightning goes up 1-0 in Eastern finals but lose their goalie Bishop with an apparent left leg injury.

                      7) There are lot of Australian college basketball players in this country; odd thing for them is, when school breaks for the summer here, it is winter back home for them.

                      6) Washington Nationals hitters batting right behind Bryce Harper are 5-33 this season after Harper is walked.

                      5) Patrick Ewing interviewed for the Orlando head coaching job. He once turned down a shot to coach in the D-League to gain experience as a head coach.

                      4) Jose Reyes found out Friday that his suspension will be 51 games, or roughly $6.2M; now the Rockies can talk trade for Reyes while he gets ready to begin his 2016 season. With the 33-year old Reyes making $22M, hard to believe Colorado will want to keep him, even if they wanted to play him at 2B.

                      3) Chris Sale is 8-0 this season as the first place White Sox won again.

                      2) Golfer Will Wilcox aced the 17th hole at the PLAYERS Championship, he is first player to do that in 14 years.

                      1) 115 major league hitters have homered in their first career at-bat.

                              • LEADING OFF: Arrieta chases Hubbell, Strasburg up for Nats
                                May 14, 2016

A look at what's happening all around the majors today:

                                UNBEATABLE

Cubs RHP Jake Arrieta (6-0, 1.13 ERA) faces Pittsburgh and tries to win his 18th straight decision, moving closer to Hall of Famer Carl Hubbell's major league record of 24 straight victories. Hubbell set the mark with the New York Giants in 1936-37. Arrieta, who last lost on July 25, has gone just five innings in two of his past three starts since his no-hitter against Cincinnati.

                                STEPHEN STAYS

Nationals RHP Stephen Strasburg will make his first start since agreeing to a $175 million, seven-year extension when Washington hosts the Marlins in the opener of a day-night doubleheader. Strasburg (5-0, 2.76), fifth in the NL with 58 strikeouts, will oppose LHP Justin Nicolino (2-0, 2.79).

                                NOT ON SALE

Jose Quintana (5-1) has been overshadowed by White Sox ace Chris Sale this season, but Quintana may actually be having the better year. The 27-year-old heads into his start against the Yankees with a 1.38 ERA, second in the majors behind Jake Arrieta.

                                GIANT PROBLEM

Jake Peavy (1-4, 8.47) might not have a spot in San Francisco's rotation much longer and makes his case to remain against the Diamondbacks. Peavy has allowed six or more runs in three of his seven starts this season and has 11 walks and five homers allowed over his past 13 innings. Arizona sends out Patrick Corbin (1-3, 4.12).

                                BACK AT IT

Cardinals righty Carlos Martinez (4-2, 2.61) returns against the Angels after exiting his previous start early with fatigue. St. Louis got Martinez a few extra days of rest while he battled flu-like symptoms.
