Belmont Stakes bteting horse-by-horse preview and picks

Here we go again. Thirteen times since Affirmed won the Triple Crown in 1978 has a horse entered the Belmont Stakes with a chance to make history and each time they’ve failed.

    What makes this year different?

Here’s a look at the field for Saturday’s Belmont Stakes:

    1. Mubtaahij (Jockey, Irad Ortiz, odds 10-1): Took a lot of money at the windows in the Kentucky Derby and finished a hard-closing eighth. Should be able to get the Belmont’s grueling distance but don't think he's a major threat. Import, who won the UAE Derby, skipped the Preakness to freshen up.

    2. Tale of Verve (Gary Stevens, 15-1): Has just one win in seven career starts but he took a game second in the Preakness making his entry in this race seem legitimate. Also shown ability to come from off the pace and has run six straight races over a mile long but it took him six tries to break his maiden and this is too steep a challenge.

    3. Madefromlucky (Javier Castellano, 12-1): First of two Todd Pletcher-trained horses in the field and if one trainer would like to prevent Bob Baffert from winning the Triple Crown, it's Pletcher. This one won the Peter Pan over this surface but was walloped by American Pharoah twice at Oaklawn once in the slop and once on a fast surface.

    4. Frammento (Mike Smith, 30-1): Didn't like him in the Kentucky Derby where he finished 11th and there's no reason to jump on him here. He's won just once in eight career starts and his best Beyer figure is 87 – overmatched.

    5. American Pharoah (Victor Espinoza, 3-5): The favorite has lost the last nine Belmont stakes and all 11 Triple Crown winners had raced at Belmont before running in the 1½-mile Belmont Stakes. Pharoah has never run at Belmont. But, he was a 2-year-old champion, has won six-straight races all with Beyer figures over 100, and importantly he’s held his weight steady since his Derby start. When Baffert entered stablemate Dortmund in the Preakness he was stating the obvious: there isn’t a 3-year-old in training that can beat him anywhere.

    6. Frosted (Joel Rosario, 5-1): Is a half-brother to Tonalist who spoiled California Chrome’s Triple Crown hopes last year. Was a hard-charging fourth after a dismal start in the Kentucky Derby and the fact that he's already raced at Belmont (finishing second as a 2-year-old) makes him the biggest threat. His best race was a win in the Wood at Aqueduct but he can't spot the chalk too much distance or he'll never catch him,

    7. Keen Ice (Kent Desormeaux, 20-1): Also skipped the Preakness after encountering major traffic problems in the Kentucky Derby where he finished seventh at 45-1. He’s sure to take some money here but the lack of much speed up front should severely hinder his chances.

8 Materiality (Jorge Velasquez, 6-1): The second Pletcher charge and another with a good chance to play the role of spoiler. He was left at the gate in the Derby but then staged an unlikely rally to finish sixth posting the fastest time of all the runners in the final half mile. The Derby loss was his first in four starts and he usually breaks well. Really thought he'd be a menace in the Preakness but he wasn't ready and he spent two straight weeks training at Belmont for this race.

Picks: 1. American Pharoah. 2. Materiality. 3. Frosted. 4. Mubtaahij.

Eye on MLB, June 6: Live updates on all game action

Heading into each day, one of my habits is to look at the streak (or "STRK" on our page) column of the standings. The last 10 column is pretty cool, too, just to take the two columns and always have a snapshot of which teams are hot and which are struggling.

At the top of the "hot" scale we've got the Yankees, Rays, Cardinals and Pirates all with four consecutive wins. On the flip-side, the Tigers have lost eight in a row while the Mariners have dropped seven straight.

The Mariners struggled early, but appeared to be righting the ship when they evened things up at 24-24. Nope. Since then they haven't won and only have a better record than one team in the AL -- the Oakland Athletics. They're only two games better than that, too.

As for the Tigers, they haven't been below .500 all season after an 11-2 start, but here they sit at 28-28, five games behind the shocking Twins in the AL Central and just 1.5 games above the last-place White Sox.

Since that 11-2 start, only Oakland (16-27) has been worse in all of baseball than Detroit (17-26). This isn't a short stretch, either. It's roughly six weeks.

If the Tigers lose to the White Sox again Saturday, they'll only be a half-game above last place.

As for the rest, it's all here. Welcome to The Eye. As as it the case each and every day, this post will feature game recaps, milestones, highlights, injury news, rumors and a look toward the following day's action. We'll help make sure you don't miss a thing.

Skunks nest found in Cardinals dugout at Dodger Stadium

Four skunks, reportedly two adults and two children, were trapped by Dodger Stadium workers under a photographer's well inside of the visitor's dugout Friday night. After a "skunk whisperer" (who identified as a bee wrangler) and local animal control failed to wrangle the critters away, it was decided to leave them trapped in the dugout during the game, and to capture them afterward using fresh salmon as bait. Not the canned stuff. And not Tim Salmon, either.

The Cardinals beat the Dodgers 2-1 and nobody got sprayed, thus forever replacing the "Rally Squirrel" of recent vintage with four "Rally Skunks."

Three Horses Capable of Upsetting American Pharoah in the Belmont

                      #3 Madefromlucky:

He looked like a new horse when he won the Peter Pan Stakes after trainer Todd Pletcher took the blinkers off for that race. Outstanding jockey Javier Castellano rode Madefromlucky for the first time in the Peter Pan, and he is back aboard for the Belmont Stakes on Saturday, so perhaps they make a good team together. Madefromlucky finished second to American Pharoah in the Arkansas Derby in April.

                      #6 Frosted:

Out of the 18 horses in the Kentucky Derby, Frosted was really the only horse positioned toward the back of the pack early to run well late in the race. Frosted shipped to Belmont Park after the Kentucky Derby, and he has trained at Belmont in the five weeks since the Kentucky Derby, so he may have a “home-court advantage” on his side. Another positive note for Frosted is that his trainer Kiaran McLaughlin and jockey Joel Rosario both have already won the Belmont Stakes in their careers.

                      #8 Materiality:

With only four races under his belt, Materiality is the least-experienced runner in the Belmont Stakes. He looked awesome over the winter in Florida, where he was 3-for-3, including a victory in the $1-million Besilu Stables Florida Derby. Materiality was completely taken out of his game after breaking badly from the gate forced him to run 13th early in the Kentucky Derby. He should be more effective while running closer to the pace in the Belmont Stakes on Saturday.

Historical Case for an American Pharoah Coronation

ELMONT, N.Y. – Racing fans can live with a champion whose tail is too short and who is so sensitive to crowd noise that the trainer must stuff his ears with cotton. They will gladly forgive those quirks – and perhaps delight in them – if American Pharoah can end the longest drought in Triple Crown history.

This is the 14th time that a horse won both the Kentucky Derby and Preakness Stakes since Affirmed completed the elusive trifecta in 1978 to emerge as the 11th Triple Crown winner. It is fair to say that hopes have never been higher for the long-awaited breakthrough to occur.

American Pharoah will take a six-race winning streak into the Belmont Stakes on Saturday and comes off a seven-length romp in the Preakness Stakes, the greatest margin since Triple Crown hopeful Smarty Jones broke away from the field by 11 ½ lengths in 2004. The only blemish on his record can easily be forgiven — it came in his debut.

Trainers rave about the ease with which American Pharoah covers ground. His own conditioner, Bob Baffert, said he all but floats over the track. Dallas Stewart, who trains Preakness runner-up and Belmont entrant Tale of Verve, is among those who has taken time from a hectic schedule to watch American Pharoah gallop in the mornings, to watch poetry in motion.

“The horse trains beautifully,” Stewart said. “He is awesome to watch train.”

American Pharoah has shown that he can win on a variety of tracks. He runs well on a fast track. He really runs well on a wet surface, as he demonstrated with easy victories in the Rebel Stakes at Oaklawn Park and in the Preakness at Pimlico Race Course. No rain is forecast.

He compares favorably with other recent Triple Crown winners in accomplishments and style. He was honored as the 2-year-old champion despite missing the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile with an injury. Six of the last seven Triple Crown winners also were saluted as top 2-year-olds. With his early speed, he is reminiscent of the last three horses to complete the sweep: Secretariat (1973), Seattle Slew (1977) and Affirmed (1978).

American Pharoah answered a huge question in the Kentucky Derby by prevailing in a tremendous battle with Firing Line. They virtually matched strides down the Churchill Downs stretch in a test of talent and heart. American Pharoah edge ahead in the final strides of the 1 ¼-mile thriller.

It appears that the only horse that can stop American Pharoah would be American Pharoah. Counting the Arkansas Derby, the Belmont represents his fourth race in eight weeks. That is a staggering workload by today’s standards, and it would be understandable if he has nothing left to give.

Jockey Victor Espinoza is taking his third shot at a Triple Crown and second in as many years. Espinoza said he realized very quickly last year that it was not meant to be for California Chrome. The energy level he needed simply wasn’t there in the Belmont.

“I learned if the horse is not ready, there is not much I can do,” he said.

Baffert fell short of the historic sweep with Silver Charm (1997), Real Quiet (1998) and War Emblem (2002). He understands the magnitude of the 1 ½-mile challenge.

“You’re going to get a lot of people making runs at you,” he said. “You know you’re the target, and we understand that.

Baffert has done everything possible to prepare American Pharoah for the race of a lifetime. The colt produced two crackling workouts at Churchill Downs, the more recent of them coming Monday, when he blazed five furlongs in 1:00.20 beneath the Twin Spires.

“My job is to have him prepared so he can bring his ‘A’ game,” Baffert said, “because if he doesn’t bring his ‘A’ game, it doesn’t matter how Victor rides him.”

The moment of truth is almost at hand, and a coronation is long overdue.
