Interesting, I thought Borel was just easing her a little. He did say afterward she didn't have 100%. ((I think he said 110%, idk why))

Has a horse ever gone 1st,2nd,1st in the Crown?

Yeah, my first thought was Borel thought he was ahead by more than he was. But after watching it again I can see RA was running out of gas.

Isn't Belmont a bit longer than the Preakness?

Derby: 1 mile and 1/4 (RA wouldn't have gotton that)

              Preakness 1 mile and 3/16ths

              Belmont: 1 mile and 1/2
              Good Luck to everyone

no problem I spent 15 mins researching and flipping through results and when I was done, I found a page at the site that showed it. If only i found that sooner.

                      Just watched the race again...

Mine that Bird was 6 wide around the turn, checked at the top of the stetch and then got bumped a little.

Smith takes off Mine That BirdComment Email Print Share By Jay Privman

Mike Smith, who rode Mine That Bird to a second-place finish in the Preakness Stakes on Saturday, will not ride him in the June 6 Belmont Stakes, choosing instead to ride Madeo in the Grade 1 Whittingham Stakes at Hollywood Park that day.

Brad Pegram, Smith's agent, informed Chip Woolley, the trainer of Mine That Bird, on Monday morning. The decision opens the possibility that Calvin Borel, who rode Mine That Bird to a victory in the Kentucky Derby before opting to ride the filly Rachel Alexandra in the Preakness, can get back on Mine That Bird for the Belmont, if Rachel Alexandra does not run. As of Monday she was only considered possible for the Belmont.

"We made this commitment to Madeo before the Preakness, before the filly was sold and Calvin took off Mine That Bird to ride the filly and we got a chance to ride Mine That Bird in the Preakness," Pegram said Monday.

Madeo is owned by Jerry and Ann Moss and trained by John Shirreffs, with whom Smith has won major races with the likes of Giacomo and Zenyatta. Shirreffs's wife, Dottie, is the racing manager for the Mosses.

"Everybody is well aware of the relationship that Mike has with John and Dottie and the Mosses," Pegram said. "It's just too bad that these races are on the same day."

Woolley, reached by phone while driving Mine That Bird back to Churchill Downs from Pimlico, said he would "have to see" if Borel would regain the mount.

Borel would be available to ride Mine That Bird in the Belmont if Rachel Alexandra does not run. On Sunday, Rachel Alexandra's trainer, Steve Asmussen, said he would consult with majority owner Jess Jackson before deciding on a Belmont start. But Asmussen allowed that he didn't look at the Belmont with the same urgency as he did the Preakness for Rachel Alexandra.

wonder if the rain before the race helped mine that bird or do you think he would have run that great regardless.i also have another question.do you think its possible to have a superhorse and race him as a 2 year old and in all the 3 year old stakes before the triple crown.hold him back in all the races just running good enough to qualify for the triple crown then run the best you can and go off at huge odds and win alot of $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$ or do you think this horse just came into his own at the right time

tech, mine that bird is a classic,one-run closer, the track was not playing to front speed all day, definitely the hot fractions on the front end, helped set up his late kick, same as the derby,i think a race where the fractions are a lot slower like 25,50 would hurt his chances // as to the odds deal,i would say no,he did not run that bad in those races, you go back to his form in canada the year before and the horse does not look that bad, with all that being said, the horse is just freaking at the right time, talk about a great investment by his connections !!
