        • The outbreak of the coronavirus in China has started having ramifications around the NHL. Specifically, it’s impacting some players’ ability to get new hockey sticks.

Many professional sticks are manufactured in China, and according to a report from The Boston Globe, work and travel restrictions in the region have severely hampered the ability for companies to produce and ship new gear. Bauer and CCM craft 75.7 percent of hockey sticks used by NHL players and both companies make those sticks in China.

The stick shortage has hit several players in the Devils’ locker room, and they’ve been trying to navigate around that inconvenience for the past few weeks.

“It’s definitely been tough. A lot of guys have actually started to use each others’ sticks,” Devils forward Kevin Rooney told NJ Advance Media. “Right now, I’m using (Blake) Coleman’s stick. It’s tough not having a lot of sticks because guys like to go through them. Even if they’re not breaking, guys like to switch — once a week, minimum — to try to use a new stick. Just the way they’re built, the pop in the stick goes away after a week.”

The number of sticks used in a season varies by player. Some, like Devils forward Miles Wood, like to use a new stick every game. Others, like winger Jesper Bratt, will use a stick until it breaks.
Bratt said he’s used the same stick for the past nine games and has a decent supply left, so he hasn’t been hampered by the current shortage. Other players are also lucky enough to still have a good number of sticks stocked up.

But while Rooney is currently using one of Coleman’s sticks, Coleman is also one of the few feeling the pain of the short supply.
Right before the outbreak started and the manufacturing of sticks slowed, Coleman switched his stick, so the shortage came at the worst time for him. For more than a month, he’s been using sticks that don’t have his name on them.

“Hoping they get it open soon,” Coleman said. “In the meantime, I’ve just been using a partially broken stick for the last couple games, but trying to ride that one out as long as possible.”

Coleman has two goals in the past two games with that partially broken stick, so he at least seems to be getting by just fine while he waits for new lumber.
Rooney said the shortage has also indirectly hurt the fans, since it’s been harder for players to give away sticks before or after games. At this moment, there are only so many to go around, and players need to be conservative about handing out souvenirs.

When it comes to hockey sticks, players are very particular about the details. The length, the amount of curve and flexibility all factor into a player’s use. Slightly altering even one of those things can have an impact.

“For most hockey guys, we’re all obviously creatures of habit, so anything that throws off our routine, we don’t really like," Rooney said. "Especially with something equipment related.”

NEW YORK RANGERS AT COLOMBUS BLUE JACKETS
            CHEERING FOR GOALIES

The New York Rangers (3-2 SU, 2-3 O/U last five) have won five of their last seven (including four straight on the road) ahead of their Friday night matchup in Columbus versus the Blue Jackets (3-2 SU, 1-4 O/U last five). Both teams will be on the backend of a back-to-back with the Rangers 4-3 SU and 3-3-1 O/U in the second game of those scenarios while the Jackets record sits at 4-2 SU and 3-3 O/U in their last six B2Bs.

The Blue Jackets have seen just one Over at home in their last 11 home games while the Rangers have been getting steady goaltending on the road of late, hitting the Under in four of their last five road games. The teams split a pair of road victories earlier this season with the Under hitting in both contests. We are riding both teams’ Under trends and taking the Under 5.5 on Friday night.

TORONTO MAPLE LEAFS AT OTTAWA SENATORS
            BATTLE OF ONTARIO

Looking for a big underdog on Saturday night? Take a look in Ottawa where the Senators, losers of six of seven, take on a Toronto Maple Leafs team that has won just two of the previous six matchups. These two teams met just two weeks ago on Saturday night and the Sens lost on the road in overtime as +230 dogs.

Ottawa hasn’t had much to play for this year, so getting up for a nationally televised game on Saturday night versus its provincial rivals shouldn’t be a problem. The +1.5 puckline has hit in all seven of Toronto’s last seven games and should be priced well for Saturday night. Feel free to take the Sens on the moneyline, but don’t forget about the +1.5.

NEW YORK ISLANDERS AT LAS VEGAS GOLDEN KNIGHTS
            GOALS IN THE DESERT

You might have to stay up late on Saturday night if you plan on watching our favorite Over bet on the board. The Islanders travel to Sin City as both clubs are riding profitable Over trends of late. The Knights are averaging 3.3 goals for and against in their last 10 and have hit the Over in eight of their last 10 games at home.

The Islanders lead the league in goals for over their last five (4.0/game) but are struggling to find consistency in net as they are rotating between Thomas Greiss (12 goals allowed in his last four starts and 3-0-1 O/U) and Semyon Varlamov (13 goals allowed in his last four starts and 3-1 O/U). We are taking the Over 6.5 on this Saturday nightcap and wouldn’t be surprised if it opens at 6 as both teams sit in the middle of the league in total O/U on the year.

            EDMONTON OILERS AT CAROLINA HURRICANES
            NO, MCDAVID, NO PROBLEM

The Carolina Hurricanes and the East’s second-best record (17-9) against Western Conference opponents host the Connor McDavid-less Oilers on Sunday at 4 ET. The Canes have only dropped one game in regulation at home in their last eight but are 5-2-1 O/U over that stretch.

We like the Canes’ moneyline but feel the price will be heavy on the juice and with the Oilers going 14-8 SU versus the East we might have to pass on the ML and look at taking the Over 6.

No team in the league is having higher scoring games than the Oilers over the last 10 games (7.2/game) and they have managed to score without their captain, putting up five against Chicago in their first game without McDavid. Take the Over.

GOALIE PROFILE: MACKENZIE BLACKWOOD, NEW JERSEY DEVILS

The Devils’ backstop has had a hot start to the month collecting back-to-back shutouts last week and has posted a 1.95 goals against over the last 30 days. The Devils are just 3-7 SU in their last 10 but Blackwood is 7-2 SU in his last nine decisions. Even with the shutouts, it may be difficult to trust the Devils and the Under as they are allowing the third-most scoring chances against over the last 30 days and sit 26th in team save percentage.

New Jersey will take on the Carolina Hurricanes on Friday and then the defensive juggernaut Blue Jackets on Sunday. Blackwood’s splits favor Friday’s road game as the goalie is 11-5 SU on the road compared to 6-14 SU at home, but check in on the game’s starters as Blackwood started on Thursday but could possibly play back-to-back with poor backup options in New Jersey.

INJURY UPDATE: F CAM ATKINSON, COLUMBUS BLUE JACKETS

Cam Atkinson missed nearly a month late in December and the Jackets went 10-4 SU. Since his return to the lineup, the Jackets are 5-3 SU but will be without Atkinson again for up to three weeks. The 90’s fad diet sits third amongst Columbus forwards in ice-time (17:39/g) while also playing top powerplay minutes.

The Blue Jackets aren’t known as an offensive team but have actually performed better with Atkinson in the lineup. In the games that forward missed this year, the Jackets averaged 2.83 goals per game and 17.2 percent on the powerplay (87 percent on the PK) and with the former 40-goal scorer in the lineup, they averaged just 2.4 goals per game and 9.1 percent on the PP (94.1 percent on the PK). Keep rolling with Columbus and take any discount that may come with Atkinson’s injury.

            HAT TRICK TRENDS

            • Favorites cleaned up last week going 31-16 with away favorites really dominating, finishing 11-2 over the last seven days. Much like last week, the puckline wasn’t as successful but still had a positive return hitting at 40 percent.

            • The league’s best Over team on the road (66%), the Nashville Predators, head to St. Louis on Saturday for an afternoon game. The Blues aren’t known as an Over team but are 9-4-2 O/U in their last 15. The Preds are 8-2 O/U on totals of 5.5 this year and 18-7 O/U on totals of 6.

            • The Washington Capitals are currently 9-1 O/U on first-period totals in their last 10. While there is usually a lot of juice on single 1P Over plays, first-period Under plays can be profitable with odds at even money or better. The Los Angeles Kings and Columbus Blue Jackets are both crushing 1P Unders of late with both teams going 1-9 O/U in their last 10.

              Saturday’s List of 13: Clearing out a cluttered mind…….

              13) Most teams from one conference in one NCAA tournament?

2011 Big East had 11 teams in the tournament; the teams went 7-4 in first round, 2-5 in second round; Marquette lost in the Sweet 16, UConn won the national title, after going 9-9 in the Big East regular season.

2012 Big East and 2018 ACC had 10 teams each; sounds like this year’s Big 14 is going to challenge that record of 11.

              12) Cleveland Indians’ P Mike Clevinger had meniscus surgery on his knee, is out 6-8 weeks, so he’ll probably miss Opening Day.

              11) Indians also signed OF Domingo Santana, who had an OPS of .850 in the first half of the season, but only .468 in the second half, while playing for the Mariners last year.

              10) Funny how Vanderbilt sucks at football/basketball, but they probably have the best baseball program in the country. Makes no sense.

College baseball is a little different; in a 1-1 game vs Michigan Friday night. Vandy executed a squeeze play on an 0-2 count. That would never happen in the major leagues.

              9) NHL’s LA Kings, Colorado Avalanche are playing an outdoor game at the Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs today. NHL struck gold with these outdoor games; no way did they know how popular they would become.

              8) Siena 73, Rider 64— Rider’s senior G Stevie Jordan wears #23; any similarity between him and the other Jordan who wore #23 is purely coincidental.

Siena is 11-0 at home, 1-10 on the road; conference tournament moves to Atlantic City this year, after usually being in Albany, good news for the rest of the MAAC.

              7) Manhattan signed basketball coach Steve Masiello to a 3-year contract extension; Jaspers are 11-11 this year, as they try to avoid their fifth losing season in a row. Manhattan is 35-51 in MAAC games the last five years, after going 28-12 from 2013-15.

              6) CB Josh Norman is getting released by the Redskins, who recently hired Ron Rivera as their head coach. Norman played four years in Carolina under Rivera; not a good sign that they dump him as soon as Rivera is on board. Why should another team want Norman if Rivera doesn’t?

              5) University of Washington’s softball team has a left-handed catcher; you don’t see those every day. Last lefty catcher in the major leagues was Mike Squires of the White Sox in 1980, who was a first baseman most of the time.

              4) A Northern Iowa student had his prize money reduced from $10,000 to $2,000 after some unclear rules determined that the half-court shot he made went in after time on the clock had expired. Watching the replay, there was no running clock visible, so it was a little cheesy when they wouldn’t pay the kid his $10K. He made his only try from halfcourt.

              3) Eight NHL coaches have already been fired this season; seems like a lot.

              2) Dartmouth 65, Columbia 63— Lions led 61-53 with 7:53 left, then scored two points the rest of the game and lost, their sixth defeat in a row.

              1) Yale 88, Princeton 64— Bulldogs take over first place in Ivy League at 6-1; top four teams make Ivy tournament.

                      Quote of the Day:
“I support Mason Rudolph not only because I know him, but also because I was on that field immediately following the altercation with Myles Garrett, and subsequently after the game. I interacted with a lot of people in the Cleveland Browns organization — players and coaches. If Mason said what Myles claimed, it would have come out during the many interactions I had with those in the Browns’ organization. In my conversations, I had a lot of expressions of sorrow for what transpired.”

                      Sunday’s List of 13: Wrapping up a sports Saturday…….

                      13) 12 of college hoop’s top 25 teams played on road Saturday; eight of them lost.

                      12) Maryland 67, Michigan State 60:
                      — Terps outscored MSU 14-0 over final 3:24 of game.
                      — Maryland led by 15 in first half.
                      — Spartans lost four of their last five games.

                      11) Cal-Fullerton 105, Cal Poly 101, 4OT:
                      — First time they met, Cal Poly won 101-100 in OT.
                      — Fullerton was 37-53 on foul line, Cal Poly 29-36
                      — Titans made 10-19 on arc, still needed 4 OT’s to win.

                      10) Kentucky 67, Ole Miss 62— Rebels led by 7 with 9:58 left, but had their 3-game win streak snapped, as Wildcats won despite going 2-22 on arc. Kermit Davis is a very good coach; Ole Miss was 1-7 in SEC at one point, but Davis has made the #251 experience team a much better team.

                      9) Mississippi State 78, Arkansas 77— Bulldogs blew a 17-point lead, then put a rebound back in for game-winning hoop with less than a second to play. Miss State is an old school team; they took 44 2-point shots, were only 3-7 on the arc. Only senior who played for State was Tyson Carter- he gave them 26 points off the bench.

                      8) Florida State 80, Syracuse 77— Seminoles bounced back from Duke loss, winning game they trailed by 11 in with 12:11 left. Syracuse played six guys basically; a 7th guy played only 7:00. None of the seven guys are seniors; only Hofstra’s subs play less than Syracuse subs.

                      7) Upsets:
                      — Georgetown (+11) 73, Butler 66
                      — Incarnate Word (+10) 67, New Orleans 66
                      — LMU (+7.5) 65, Santa Clara 59
                      — George Washington (+7) 73, George Mason 67
                      — Maryland (+7) 67, Michigan State 60
                      — Bowling Green (+7) 77, Ball State 71
                      — Md-Eastern Shore (+6.5) 66, Bethune-Cookman 58
                      — Clemson (+6) 77, Louisville 62
                      — Western Carolina (+6) 80, Wofford 74

                      6) Colorado State 77, Wyoming 70— Rams outscored their rivals 14-0 over final 2:26 to get out of Laramie with win, after they trailed by 19 with 14:06 left. State was 26-40 on foul line; not often a road team takes 40 foul shots in a game.

                      5) Loyola 82, Northern Iowa 73 OT— Loyola butchered end of regulation, not fouling when they led by 3 and still had fouls to give in last 0:05— UNI hit a 3-pointer to tie game, but Ramblers had a strong overtime and closed to within one game of the Panthers atop the MVC standings.

                      4) Virginia 64, North Carolina 62— Virginia tore the Tar Heels’ heart out of their chest, making a 3-pointer with 0:00.6 left in game. Carolina lost its last five games, is 3-11 in the ACC.

                      3) Richmond 77, VCU 59— Spiders avenge an earlier loss to their crosstown rival; they’ve won four games in row, are up to 19-6 this season, 9-3 in A-14.

                      2) Florida 84, Vanderbilt 66— They named the court in Gainesville after Billy Donovan last night; think about it- since 2001, the ’07 Gators are the only defending national champ to get to the Elite 8. They won consecutive national titles, very difficult in this era of college ball, where kids bolt to pro basketball as soon as they make two layups in a row.

                      1) Providence 74, Seton Hall 71— Friars led this game 34-9….34-9!!!! Lot of people are picking Seton Hall to get to the Final Four, but they’ve lost three of last five games. NCAA Tournament is going to be very difficult to predict. Lot of wildly erratic teams out there.

                          Monday’s List of 13: Wrapping up a sports weekend…….

                          13) Four years ago, James Madison fired basketball coach Matt Brady after consecutive seasons of 19-14/21-11, when they went 23-13 in conference games. Brady coached the Dukes for eight years, making the NCAA Tournament once. Apparently, that wasn’t enough.

In four years since, JMU is 43-80 overall, 21-47 in conference play. Maybe they should bring Brady back as coach.

                          12) It has been 20 years since a Big 14 team won the college basketball national title; Michigan State in 2000 was the least team to do that.

                          11) If you’re a college basketball coach and you have several sons of former NBA players on your team, I’d say thats a pretty good endorsement for your program.

This year, Cal-Irvine has Collin Welp, Jeron Artest; last year, they had Spencer Rivers, Max Hazzard, JC Butler. Russell Turner is a former NBA assistant coach who has built the Anteaters into the best program in the Big West, 95-30 in conference games the last eight years.

                          10) New Red Sox acquisition Alex Verdugo is still rehabilitating from a stress fracture in his lower back, an injury that sidelined him for the lasttwo months of 2019 and the playoffs. He will likely start 2020 on the injured list.

I’m guessing Red Sox fans aren’t overly excited by this news; Boston’s front office did know about the injury before they made the big trade.

                          9) Season flies by; on Saturday Elon was the first D-I team this season to have their Senior Day. Conference tournaments will be starting in a couple of weeks.

                          8) Texas Tech has a basketball player named Jahmi’us Ramsey who is making 45.5% of his 3-point shots, but only 62.5% of his foul shots. How is it possible that a kid can be so prolific on the arc, but so erratic on the charity stripe?

                          7) Upsets:
                          — Ill-Chicago (+9) 73, Northern Kentucky 43
                          — Iowa (+5) 58, Minnesota 55
                          — Loyola Md (+5) 84, Colgate 80
                          — Boston College (+4.5) 71, NC State 68
                          — Niagara (+3.5) 77, Monmouth 72
                          — Missouri State (+3.5) 71, Indiana State 58

                          6) Shaquille O’Neal’s son Shareef is transferring from UCLA to LSU; not sure why it didn’t work out for him at UCLA, but LSU is Shaq’s alma mater, and I’m guessing he’s a big donor to the school, so what happens if the young man doesn’t play well at LSU? Could be very awkward.

                          5) On March 13, a new basketball league starts in Africa, with 12 teams representing six countries on that continent. NBA is sponsoring the league, as they work towards growing the game world-wide.

                          4) NHL’s Vegas Golden Knights have a good TV commercial on their local TV channel; fathers of players reading mean tweets from “fans” while the son sits there and listens. Solid stuff.

                          3) Won’t be posting any prop bets on home runs this season; will the baseballs be juiced like they were last year? Will they be normal again? Important information to have for prop bets.

                          2) They moved the bullpens off the field in San Francisco to behind the fence in right-conter field, so the dimensions there are a little shorter this year. Miami also moved its fences in a little bit this season. If the Marlins wanted more home runs, maybe they should’ve kept Stanton, Ozuna and Yelich. Just a thought.

                          1) UConn 64, Memphis 61— Tigers are least-experienced team in country; they’ve lost three games in a row, are 17-8, 6-6 in AAC, and are quickly falling off the bubble, despite having the best eFG% defense in country.

NEW YORK ISLANDERS AT ARIZONA COYOTES
                                AFTERNOON DELIGHT

Monday is President’s Day (US) and Family Day (Canada) which means a trio of 4 p.m. ET games. The Islanders bring their six-period goalless drought to Arizona to take on the Coyotes who are clinging to the final playoff spot in the West. Arizona is 6-4 SU at home in its last 10 but has gotten at least one point in nine of those games.

The Islanders have played to a sub-.500 record against the West this year and are 1-6 SU on the road in their last seven matches against Western Conference opponents. We like the home team on this holiday early game and are fading an Islanders team that has been shutout in back-to-back games.

TAMPA BAY LIGHTNING AT COLORADO AVALANCHE
                                BATTLE OF THE BEST

It’s not often we get a Tampa Bay moneyline that is -120 or better, but Monday night gives us a great price on the Lightning mainly because Tampa is in Colorado and facing arguably the West’s best team in the Avalanche.

The Lightning are riding a 10-game winning streak (eight wins in regulation) and have also won six straight on the road. Since January 1, Tampa Bay leads the league in goals against allowing just 1.71 goals per game. Tampa is also scoring at the third-best rate (3.64 per game) which is impressive because its powerplay has been awful at a league-worst 7.7 percent success rate.

The Avalanche have dropped two straight games and will likely be without their No. 1 goaltender in Philipp Grubauer. The next man up is Pavel Francouz who is 2-2 SU in 2020 and has done much worse at home this year with a .902 save percentage in the Pepsi Centre versus a .946 save percentage on the road. Francouz has started just two games in the last 35 days. We are grabbing the Lightning on the moneyline.

TORONTO MAPLE LEAFS AT PITTSBURGH PENGUINS
                                LEAFS ON THE BUBBLE

The Toronto Maple Leafs have hit the Under in four of thir last five games and are coming off a bad 5-2 loss to the Buffalo Sabres on Sunday that doesn’t help their playoff hopes. However, on the year Toronto is one of the best road Over teams hitting it at 63% on the season and is 7-3 O/U in its last 10 road games.

Goalie Freddy Andersen should draw the start against the Penguins on Tuesday, and the Leafs No. 1 goalie has a 3.95 goals against average and a .857 save percentage in the last 14 days.

The Leafs will face a Penguins team in Pittsburgh on Tuesday that finished the week with a comfortable 5-1 win over the Red Wings and has recorded at least one point in 11 of its last 12 home games — winning nine. Pittsburgh took the only matchup earlier this year with a 6-1 thumping of the Buds back in November. We like the Pens on the ML and the Over 6.5 especially with Toronto’s D-core extremely banged up.

NEW YORK RANGERS AT CHICAGO BLACKHAWKS
RANGERS LOOK GOOD IN ORIGINAL SIX MATCHUP

On Wednesday, the Rangers and their 4-1 SU record over their last five head to Chicago to take on the Blackhawks who have lost six of their last seven.
The Rangers have been hot over their last 10 and have the fourth-most points in the East across that stretch. Chicago has won four of the last five original-six matchups but both teams have yet to face each other this year.

The Rangers’ powerplay has been the catalyst to their success as the Blue Shirts top the league since January 1 in power play scoring percentage at an impressive 37 percent. That could be a problem for the Chicago penalty kill as it is giving up goals at a 20-percent rate while shorthanded since the new year. We are taking the visiting team on the moneyline.

GOALIE PROFILE: TUUKKA RASK, BOSTON BRUIN

The Bruins’ backstop has been a wall in 2020 and hasn't allowed more than two goals in any of his 10 starts in the new year. Rask has won seven of those 10 games including five of his last six. The Bruins, as a team, have the fourth-best save percentage against scoring chances and the fifth-best save percentage against high danger shots.

Boston travels to Edmonton on Wednesday and although Rask hasn’t lost at home this year, he is still 8-5 SU with a 2.24 GAA on the road. Rest has also been beneficial to the Finnish netminder as Rask has just one regulation loss in his 22 starts with three or more days of rest. With Boston playing on the road, we might get a better price for the Bruins moneyline in regulation.

INJURY UPDATE: F EVGENY KUZNETSOV, WASHINGTON CAPITALS

The Washington Capitals are one the league’s best Over teams going 36-19-3 O/U on the year but the Caps will be without Evgeny Kuznetsov for a third straight game on Monday for their date with the Golden Knights.

The Under has hit in both games that Kuznetsov — the team’s second-line center and scoring 0.87 points per game — has missed and now the Capitals’ offense will face Vegas goalie Marc-Andre Fleury who is coming off a 19-save shutout on Saturday. Fleury is quite familiar with the Capitals from his time with the Penguins. We like the Under 6.5 on Monday.

                                HAT TRICK TRENDS

                                • With the playoff race tightening up with just 20 or so games to go for most teams, it’s no wonder that the Under has been hitting more consistently of late. Over the last seven days, teams went 22-31 O/U with the Under hitting at 58.5 percent with that number dropping to 52 percent over the last month.

                                • This week gives us some great cross-conference trends to test. The Bruins are 15-6 SU versus the West and 7-2 SU against the Pacific Division and face the Oilers in Edmonton on Wednesday. Edmonton is 15-13 SU at home this year but 10-2 SU against teams from the Metro Division. The Islanders are 3-7 SU versus the Pacific this year and travel to Arizona Monday to face the Coyotes who are 12-14 SU against Eastern Conference opponents.

                                • Looking for some plays that have been hitting at 80 percent or better? Take a look at first-period totals. The Kings and Blue Jackets are both hitting first-period Unders at 90 percent over their last 10 while the Capitals are hitting the 1P Over at 90 percent in their last 10.
