ST LOUIS BLUES AT DALLAS STARS
    WESTERN SHOWDOWN

Two of the top teams in the West will square off on Friday when the struggling St. Louis Blues visit the Dallas Stars. The Blues have managed just 17 points since the beginning of the year and are losers of five of their last six games.
Dallas, on the other hand, has the most points in the West over its last 10 games even though the Stars are allowing the 10th-most goals and scoring the 13th-fewest goals per game since January 12.

Not known for their offense, the Stars shouldn’t have any problem scoring against the Blues as the defending champs are allowing 3.45 a game in their last 10 (the sixth-highest rate in the league), although they did shutout the Devils on Tuesday. The Blues have won the last three meetings in Dallas while the Under has hit in eight straight meetings. We like the home team on the moneyline and wouldn’t say no to the Under 5.5.

    WINNIPEG JETS AT PHILADELPHIA FLYERS
    BATTLE OF THE BEST

Saturday afternoon gives us February’s best offense in the Eastern Conference as the Flyers host the Winnipeg Jets. Philadelphia is averaging just over four goals a game this month and is 6-3 O/U. The Jets are scoring 3.56 goals per contest (5th) this month thanks in part to averaging 34.5 shots per game — the fifth-most in the league.

These two clubs played to a 7-3 Jets win back in December and we like another high-scoring affair on Saturday afternoon. Both teams won’t be on much rest as they will be playing their third game in five nights. We are a big fan of afternoon Overs and home teams. We are riding the Flyers’ moneyline if priced reasonably and for sure taking the Over which should be set at 6 but willing to play it at 6.5

CAROLINA HURRICANES AT TORONTO MAPLE LEAFS
    FADING FAST

The last time the Maple Leafs played the Carolina Hurricanes, Toronto walked away with an incredible 8-6 win after blowing a 3-0 lead and trailing 5-3 in the third. Well, the Leafs don’t seem to have the same fight in them as before and have only won in regulation twice in their last ten games.

They may be fighting for a playoff seed but the Buds have shown very little motivation heading into the weekend with embarrassing losses to Pittsburgh and Buffalo earlier in the week. Saturday will mark Toronto’s third game in five nights and its second chance to collect a regulation win at home since Jan 14. Even with the decent performance at home versus Pittsburgh on Thursday, we are still in full Toronto fade-mode and will look to take the Canes on the moneyline or team total Over 3.5.

CALGARY FLAMES AT DETROIT RED WINGS
    FLAMING THE WINGS

Want a piece of the league’s hottest offense? On Sunday, the red-hot Calgary Flames will take their league-best offense over the last five games to Detroit — the league’s worst team at keeping pucks out of its net.

On the year, Detroit is dead-last in goals allowed per game at 3.74 per contest and also sits last in save percentage. Calgary won’t have a problem racking up goals, but it’s the defense/goaltending that has us looking at the Over. Although the Flames are scoring over four goals a game this month, they are also surrendering the most goals against, too. Taking an Over with Detroit is risky (26-28-8 O/U on the season) but if they can get two, Calgary should be able to do the rest. We are taking the Over 6 to wrap up the week.

GOALIE PROFILE: SERGEI BOBROVSKY, FLORIDA PANTHERS

With the Panthers in the middle of a playoff race, one would expect some steady goaltending from their prized off-season acquisition, but unfortunately for the Cats, Sergei Bobrovsky has been anything but consistent. Bob has won just two of his last seven starts and has an ugly 3.60 goals against over the last 30 days.

Over backers have enjoyed the Florida goalie’s starts this year. In his last 21 starts, Bobrovsky has allowed three or more goals in 16 of those games. Think about that for a bit. There is a reason Florida is 34-21-3 O/U on the season. The Panthers take on the Golden Knights in Vegas on Saturday night.

INJURY UPDATE: F MIKKO RANTANEN, COLORADO AVALANCHE

The Colorado Avalanche will be without forward Mikko Rantanen for an extended period of time after Monday’s loss to the Lightning. Rantanen is second on the team in points per game at just under one per contest. The Finnish forward has already missed 16 games this and won’t be able to help his team as the Avs make a push to win the Pacific Division.

Since Rantanen's return in late November, the Avs have averaged 3.52 goals per game (2nd) and are 20 percent on the powerplay (20th). In the games that Rantanen was out of the lineup in late October and November, Colorado managed just a slight dip in goal production at 3.38 per game (7th) and a similar 19 percent on the powerplay. There is a reason why the Avs are one of the best teams in the league and part of that has to do with their adaptability. Don’t fade the Avs just because they are missing their top winger.

    HAT TRICK TRENDS

    • A big part of hitting -1.5 pucklines, which are hitting at 34 percent over the last month, is getting the empty netter. Some teams are better at that than others with players who are in scoring races always looking to get a freebie or two. The Capitals, Coyotes, Bruins, Hurricanes and Leafs are the league’s best at getting empty-net goals while the Golden Knights, Ducks, Devils, Kings and Canadiens are scoring the fewest.

    • A great bet that holds a lot of value is “team to score first wins — NO.” These odds usually sit in the +160 to +200 range and some teams are much better at cashing than others. The Red Wings (obviously), Kings, Ducks, Canadiens, Jets, Rangers, Sabres and Senators are the league’s losingest teams when scoring first. Oddly, the Boston Bruins have a .595 winning percentage when scoring first which is the seventh-worst mark in the league. The Panthers and Hurricanes are the only two teams that are winning at .800 percent or better when scoring first.

    • Powerplay goals are an important part of hitting Overs. It is uncommon to get six or seven 5-on-5 goals in a single game. The Ducks, Senators and Blues are all allowing at least one powerplay goal against per game in February while the Stars and Wild are scoring at least one powerplay goal per game in February. The Flyers and Coyotes lead the league this month in powerplay time on ice per game while the Bruins and Hurricanes lead the league in penalty kill time on ice per game.

      — Suns are 3-6 ATS if they played the night before.
      — 76ers are 1-11-1 ATS in their last thirteen road games.

      Quote of the Day:
“If you’re saying to me, if I can choose what team I want to play on, as far as my favorite team growing up, then I probably tell you the Cowboys.”
      Alabama QB Tuo Tagovailoa

      Saturday’s quiz
Who did the Dallas Cowboys beat, last time they won a playoff game?

      Friday’s quiz
Of the 40 teams in the Final Four over the last ten years, 19 of them won their conference tournament that season.

      Thursday’s quiz
Miami coach Jim Larranaga was coach at George Mason when they made the Final Four in 2006.

      ************************************************** ***************************************

Saturday’s Den: Trends that could help you fill out your brackets…….

      13) Over last decade, 40 teams made the Final Four; 19 of those won their conference tournament that year. Four of the 19 teams had to win more than three games to win the conference tourney:
      2011— UConn 5-0
      2012— Louisville 4-0
      2018— Michigan 4-0
      2019— Auburn 4-0

      12) Only four of the 40 teams lost their first conference tourney game:
      2010— Michigan State
      2016— Syracuse
      2017— South Carolina
      2019— Texas Tech

7 of 40 teams went W-L in their conference tournament.

      11) Seven of last ten years, a #1 seed won the NCAA Tournament.
      — In 2016, Villanova won the title as a 2-seed.
      — UConn won as a 3-seed in 2011, as a 7-seed three years later.

      10) The last seven years, eight teams ranked lower than a 4-seed reached the Final Four; in 2014, UConn was a 7-seed, Kentucky an 8-seed.

      9) Last team to win the national title after going unbeaten in conference play? Kentucky in 2012, one of four teams over last decade to make Final Four after going unbeaten in conference games.

      8) Last eight years, 27 of 32 Final Four teams were ranked in KenPom’s top 20 before the NCAA Tournament started. 2014 UConn was only one of the five to win the national semifinal; they also won the national title- they were #23.

In 2011, the Final Four had seeds 3-4-8-11, only time in last decade there wasn’t a #1 or #2 seed in Final Four.

      7) Only nine of 40 Final Four teams were in top 100 in experience; 12 of 40 teams were outside top 200. Talent outweighs experience.

      6) Looking at continuity instead of experience, only 12 of 40 teams ranked in top 100; 14 of 40 teams ranked outside top 200.

      5) 14 of 40 Final Four teams ranked in top 100 in forcing turnovers; another 14 ranked outside the top 200.

      4) eFG% defense seems like an important category; 33 of last 40 Final Four teams were in top 100 in eFG% defense. 21 of those 33 teams were in the top 50.

      3) NCAA Tournament has longer TV commercials, which means that depth isn’t as important; only four of last 40 Final Four teams had benches in top 100 of minutes played. 26 of 40 teams had teams that ranked outside top 200.

They don’t call as many fouls in the NCAA tournament.

      2) Some in-tournament trends about the eventual national champ:
      — Last 14 years, national champ was 12-2 ATS in first round
      — Last 18 years, national champ was 16-2 ATS in second round.
      — Last 12 years, national champ was 10-2 ATS in regional semis.

      1) Of the last 20 defending national champs, 2007 Florida Gators were only team to return to Sweet 16; Florida won consecutive national titles.

Since 2004, the defending national champ is 2-8-1 ATS in its first round game, 3-7 in its second round game, 0-5 ATS in regional semifinals.

                Sunday’s List of 13: Wrapping up a basketball Saturday…….

It was an eventful day of college basketball, to be sure……
                13) UNLV 66, San Diego State 63— These teams played twice; Aztecs won by 4, then lost by 3, which given UNLV’s 15-14 overall record, is very surprising.

My question is this; does losing a game get a monkey off of San Diego State’s back? They were the last unbeaten team in the country, now the national media will forget about them for a few weeks, until the brackets come out. Over the long haul, maybe that helps them.

                12) Kansas 64, Baylor 61— Jayhawks avenge an earlier loss to Baylor; they’ve won 12 games in a row, are tied with Bears atop Big X standings. Both of these teams will probably be #1 seeds in the NCAA tournament. Baylor was only 8-15 on foul line in this game which obviously hurt.

                11) Oregon 73, Arizona 72, OT— Peyton Pritchard played all 45:00, scored 38 points, making 6-14 on arc. Ducks are one of three teams that are half-game behind Arizona State atop the Pac-12 standings.

Arizona missed two foul shots with 0:02 left in regulation, two more with 0:01 left in OT; you go 10-23 on the foul line in a one-point loss, thats not good.

                10) BYU 91, Gonzaga 78— Cougars made 11-25 on arc, Gonzaga 5-25. Corey Kispert has made 43.3% of his 3’s for Gonzaga this season, but was only 1-10 in this game.

                9) Memphis 60, Houston 59— Tigers were 21-30 on foul line, Houston 9-12, in game that Cougars led 8-0 out of the gate. Memphis is least-experienced team in country; they’ve won four of last five home games- their last five games were all decided by 5 or fewer points, or in OT.

                8) Hofstra 78, Delaware 62— Hofstra leads CAA by two games, but in 19 years in the CAA, they’ve never won the conference tournament. Pride is experience team #7 whose bench plays the fewest minutes in America, which could be a problem when playing consecutive days in the tournament.

Jay Wright had the Pride in the NCAA’s his last two years at Hofstra, but they were in America East back then, a much lesser conference.

                7) Upsets:
                — Md-Baltimore County (+16) 66, Vermont 64
                — Hampton (+16) 87, Winthrop 81
                — UNLV (+15.5) 66, San Diego State 63
                — Wyoming (+8) 78, Air Force 72
                — Tulane (+7.5) 75, Central Florida 74
                — Charlotte (+6.5) 72, Western Kentucky 70
                — New Orleans (+6.5) 82, McNeese State 77
                — NC-Wilmington (+6) 68, Charleston 55
                — Mercer (+6) 85, Chattanooga 80

                6) Auburn 73, Tennessee 66— Tigers avoid a 3-game losing streak by rallying back from a 54-37 deficit with 13:27 left to play. Tennessee turned ball over 24 times (-11).

                5) Eastern Illinois 83, Austin Peay 80, OT— Quite a week for the Panthers, who upset Murray State in last game after trailing by 27 in second half. EIU trailed this game by 13 with 11:11 left in game, but rallied for their second consecutive dramatic win- their last four games were decided by a total of nine points.

                4) Montana 59, Montana State 54— Grizzlies lead Big Sky by a game at 13-3; not sure what it says about a league when the first place team was 4-7 out of conference, but Grizzlies have now won six games in a row, are peaking at right time.

                3) Wright State 81, Cleveland State 74, OT— Wright coach Scott Nagy got his 500th career win; Raiders blew a 10-point lead with 9:52 left, but escaped Cleveland with an OT win.

                2) Texas State 86, Georgia State 76— Bobcats won four in row, 11 of last 13 games, have risen to 2nd place in Sun Belt, two games behind Little Rock.

Last time Texas State made NCAA Tournament was 1997, when their coach was Mike Miller, who is now coaching the New York Knicks.

                1) Saturday was February 22nd, the birthday of two of my favorite people.

My Aunt Jo was also my godmother; she had a great laugh, was extremely nice and always had a piece of pie ready when I visited her house. Probably a good thing she lived in Brooklyn; if she lived closer to here, I’d weigh 300 pounds.

I’ve written about my dad here before; he passed away in 2015, and I miss him every day. His middle name was George, sharing a birthday with George Washington. He loved golf, baseball and going to the racetrack. Am hoping Aunt Jo and my dad had a drink together today and had some fun, assuming they have drinks in heaven.

                        — Minnesota covered once in its last thirteen games.

                        Quote of the Day:
“The officiating definitely went right for Grand Rapids. That was as unprofessional as an officiating performance — I hope you tweet this out and tag the league, because that was embarrassing. Matt Rafferty is a f—ing clown. That being said, we have to be so much better at the end of games. We can’t blow a 21-point lead with 12 minutes to go. However bad and biased and unfair and illegal and cheating the referees are, we have to be better closing games. So that’s the way I feel.”

                        Monday’s List of 13: Wrapping up a sports weekend…….

                        13) Is this the weirdest rule in pro sports?

At every NHL game, an emergency goalie is available to either team, should both their goalies get hurt in that game. It is actually possible for the emergency guy to play for both teams in the same game.

Saturday, both of Carolina’s goalies left the game with injuries, so 42-year-old Dave Ayres came in as the emergency backup goaltender — and stopped 8 of 10 shots to get credit for the Hurricanes’ 6-3 win over the hometown Toronto Maple Leafs. Ayres was paid $500 for the game and was allowed to keep his game-worn jersey.

Ayres is a Zamboni driver and arena maintenance worker for the Maple Leafs’ AHL affiliate, the Toronto Marlies. Now he is a celebrity with a great story to tell.

                        12) Chicago Cubs are starting their own TV network this season, the Marquee Sports Network, which signed on for the first time Saturday afternoon.

The Cubs owning their own TV channel has been a cornerstone of the Ricketts family’s plans to improve the Cubs’ revenue flow since they acquired the ballclub, Wrigley Field and associated properties in 2009.

                        11) Virginia Commonwealth lost its last four basketball games, is 17-10, 7-7 in A-14 and has slid off the NCAA bubble, for now. This is VCU’s first four-game losing streak in 20 years.

                        10) Arizona Diamondbacks must be thrilled about this; newly acquired pitcher Madison Bumgarner has been competing in rodeo events under the alias Mason Saunders and even won $26,560 in a team-roping competition in December.

                        What could possibly go wrong?

Bumgarner agreed to an $85M, five-year contract with the Diamondbacks in December; he injured his pitching shoulder in 2017 in a dirt bike accident and missed three months of San Francisco’s season. He hasn’t been quite the same since then.

                        9) An 84-year old lady at an Ole Miss basketball game made a 94-foot putt the length of the basketball court during a timeout in the Rebels’ basketball game, and won herself a new car in the process, as part of an auto dealer’s promotion in the arena.

Was cool how excited the other fans in the arena were for her.

                        8) One unexpected by-product of the longer 3-point arc in college basketball; decent amount of kids step out of bounds on the sideline as they try to stay behind the arc to catch a pass, or drive to the basket.

                        7) Upsets:
                        — Wagner (+6) 75, St Francis 71 OT
                        — Loyola Md (+4.5) 70, Lafayette 68
                        — Canisius (+3.5) 57, Manhattan 56

                        6) Best wishes to Baltimore Ravens coach John Harbaugh, who had a knee replaced recently and won’t be at the NFL Combine this week.

                        5) I’ve said this before, but when you listen to really good announce teams, it is like you’re eavesdropping on two friends having a conversation.

In the case of ESPN’s NBA broadcasts with Mike Breen, Jeff Van Gundy and Mark Jackson, that would be three friends having a conversation. The three pf them are great together.

                        4) Colorado Buffaloes hired Karl Dorrell as their new football coach; The 56-year old Dorrell was an assistant for the Buffs for six years back in the 90’s, under Bill McCartney, Rick Neuheisel.

                        3) XFL teams have both white/dark jerseys, unlike the AAF last year, where teams had only one color, which made the league seem like a cheapskate league, which it was.

The point-after conversion options continue to be fascinating; no one knows what the right thing to do is. I’m thinking that going for three points from the 10-yard line is the right play, unless you have a QB who is a good runner, then I might prefer the 2-point option from the 5-yard line.

                        2) XFL trend; Over is 3-0 in Houston games, 1-8 in all the other games.

                        1) Was listening on TV the other night and Wally Szczerbiak was talking about when he played in the NBA All-Star Game; he mentioned how guys on the winning team make more money than guys on the losing team.

Turns out that guys on the winning team make $100,000 each; guys on losing side make $25,000 each. I did not know that.

OTTAWA SENATORS AT COLOMBUS BLUE JACKETS
                              LONE MONDAY GAME

The Columbus Blue Jackets come into Monday night’s showdown with the Ottawa Senators having lost eight in a row and hitting the Over in five of their last six. A big reason for the losing skid has been injuries to key players but also the play of their goaltending.

After leading the league in goals against for most of 2020, the BJ’s have slipped to the fifth-most goals against (3.67/game) over the last 10 days. Columbus’ M/O is win low-scoring affairs as its offense is a bottom-third unit in goals per game, and without top-end goaltending, its playoff hopes are diminishing.

The Senators haven’t been stepping up their game of late either as they are 3-9 SU in their last 12 and 1-10 SU in their last 11 road games. With two struggling teams, our only play on Monday is to bet against the goaltending and hammer the Over which opened at 5.5 but should move to 6 . Ottawa is 6-1-1 O/U on totals of 6 of late while the last meeting between the two clubs back in December ended in a 4-3 Ottawa win in overtime.

NEW JERSEY DEVILS AT DETROIT RED WINGS
                              RUNNING WITH THE DEVIL

It may not be known to everyone, but the New Jersey Devils are hot right now. They are 6-3 SU in their last nine and have knocked off the Capitals, Blue Jackets and Flyers to name a few in that stretch. They also beat the Detroit Red Wings 4-1 on February 13 and have the chance to deal the Wings another loss on Tuesday.

The Devils have the seventh-lowest goals against in February and have been getting great goaltending from MacKenzie Blackwood (see below) who is 6-0 SU in his last six. It’s tough to get any value against the Wings, but taking the Devils on the puckline (-1.5) might be the best move. New Jersey may be just 3-3 ATS in its last six wins, but Detroit has allowed its opponents to go 11-2 ATS in its last 13 losses. We are grabbing the Devils on the puckline this Tuesday.

NEW YORK RANGERS AT NEW YORK ISLANDERS
                              BATTLE OF NEW YORK

Tuesday gives us the battle of both New York clubs as the Islanders play host to the surging Rangers. One month ago, the Rangers had zero playoff aspirations, now one week before March the Rangers are just four points out a playoff spot after collecting the third-most points in the East over the last 10 games.

The Islanders are just 1-4 SU in their last five but have played better at home of late collecting nine of a possible 10 points in their last five home contests. Not to be outdone, the Rangers have won seven straight on the road, a streak that all began with a 3-2 win in February versus the Islanders. We expect the Rangers to be a good-value underdog on Tuesday and we are backing the them on the moneyline.

EDMONTON OILERS AT LAS VEGAS GOLDEN KNIGHTS
                              EVEN CONNOR CAN’T TOPPLE KNIGHTS

Connor McDavid is back but even the best player in the league might not be enough for the Edmonton Oilers as they visit the Vegas Golden Knights who have ripped off six straight wins. Vegas has been quite comfortable at home of late as the Knights have played five of their last six in Vegas and start another four-game homestand on Wednesday night.

Las Vegas owns the third-best home record in the West and have scored at least five goals in four of its last six home matches. The Oilers are 16-10 SU versus the Eastern Conference this year but just 16-19 SU versus the West. We like the boys in the desert to keep things rolling at home and are grabbing the Knights on the 3-way moneyline on Wednesday.

GOALIE PROFILE: MACKENZIE BLACKWOOD, NEW JERSEY DEVILS

As we mentioned above, the Devils have been playing better than their record of late and a lot of that has to do with the goaltending of rookie goalie MacKenzie Blackwood. The Devils backstop has won six straight starts and has allowed more than two goals just once in that stretch while picking up two shutouts.

In those six victories, the Devils won at +170, -130, +110, -190, -115 and +190. Blackwood might be worth taking some longshot stabs in the next week while the team is playing well in front of him. New Jersey has the Red Wings, Sharks and Kings on deck which are all winnable road games for Blackwood and the Devils.

                              INJURY UPDATE: THE CAROLINA HURRICANES

Last Saturday night was a bittersweet win for the Hurricanes as they lost both their goalies to injuries and Top-4 defense Brett Pesce who will be out “a while”. The Canes are already without defender Dougie Hamilton — who was in the middle of Norris-type season — and will certainly be active ahead of the trade deadline.

Goalie James Reimer is also expected to be out “a while” which leaves Petr Mrazek who exited the game after getting run over by Leafs’ Kyle Clifford. The Hurricanes had to use an emergency goalie in the game who was actually the Zamboni driver for the Leafs’ affiliated team the Toronto Marlies — and the Leafs still lost.

With so many injuries to the back end, Carolina may be a team to avoid or to play on the Over going forward. The Hurricanes take on the Dallas Stars on Tuesday with a total of 5.5 being the most probable opening line.

                              HAT TRICK TRENDS

                              • The Colorado Avalanche are without their best winger and No. 1 goalie due to injuries. Their O/U record reflects this. In their last 10, the Avs are 1-9 O/U and have only had 19 combined goals in their last five games — the lowest total in the league. Colorado plays the Sabres on Wednesday.

                              • The Dallas Stars are known as an Under team (22-38-2 O/U on the year) but their special teams have bettors looking at the Over. The Stars’ powerplay is scoring at a league-best 31 percent in February while their penalty kill has been porous, sitting in third-last at 30 percent. Dallas is 3-1-1 O/U in its last five and hasn’t seen a total of 6 since Jan.

                              • We understand that sometimes you want to watch some action but don’t have time for the full game. Well, we got you fam, and for those quick hitters the NHL has first-period betting that can get you in and out in under 30-35 minutes. The best teams at hitting first-period Overs in the last 10 games are the Philadelphia Flyers, Vegas Golden Knights, Washington Capitals, and Florida Panthers who are all converting at a rate of 80 percent.
