Kane scores 2 power-play goals, Sharks beat Canadiens 4-2

MONTREAL (AP) Evander Kane scored two power-play goals and the San Jose Sharks beat the Montreal Canadiens 4-2 on Thursday night to snap a two-game losing streak.

Kevin Labanc and Melker Karlsson also scored for the Sharks, Tomas Hertl had three assists, and Aaron Dell made 34 saves. The Sharks have won nine straight games against Montreal dating to March. 21, 2015.

Nick Cousins and Joel Armia scored for the Canadiens.

BLUE JACKETS 4, HURRICANES 3, OT

COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) - Cam Atkinson scored 3:28 into overtime to lift Columbus past Carolina.

Atkinson tapped in a pass from Pierre-Luc Dubois to give the Blue Jackets a second straight victory in a fourth consecutive overtime game. Ryan Murray, Alexander Texier and Sonny Milano also scored, and Joonas Korpisalo stopped 21 shots.

Dougie Hamilton, Ryan Dzingel and Sebastian Aho scored for Carolina, and Petr Mrazek made 27 saves.

ISLANDERS 4, COYOTES 2

UNIONDALE, N.Y. (AP) - Anders Lee scored the winner and Semyon Varlamov made 21 saves to help New York beat Arizona for its fifth straight victory.

Derick Brassard, Josh Bailey and Scott Mayfield also scored for New York.

Michael Grabner and Conor Garland scored for Arizona. The Coyotes had won four in a row.

FLYERS 4, BLACKHAWKS 1

CHICAGO (AP) - Kevin Hayes scored after he lost a goal because of an offsides challenge in Philadelphia's victory over Chicago.

Claude Giroux, James van Riemsdyk and Oskar Lindblom also scored for Philadelphia, which beat Chicago 4-3 in Prague in the season opener on Oct. 4. Brian Elliott made 23 saves in his second straight start.

Brandon Saad scored for Chicago.

RANGERS 6, SABRES 2

NEW YORK (AP) - Ryan Strome scored his first two goals this season, Henrik Lundqvist made 31 saves and New York beat Buffalo to snap a five-game losing streak.

Artemi Panarin, Brett Howden, Tony DeAngelo and Chris Kreider also scored for New York.

Marco Scandella and Vladimir Sobotka scored for Buffalo.

PREDATORS 4, WILD 0

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) - Pekka Rinne made 26 saves, Colton Sissons had a goal and an assist and Nashville beat Minnesota.

Rinne improved to 6-0-1 with his first shutout of the season and 56th overall.

Miikka Salomaki, Calle Jarnkrok and Craig Smith also scored for Nashville.

BLUES 5, KINGS 2

ST. LOUIS (AP) - Alex Pietrangelo and Robert Thomas scored in a two-minute span of the second period in St. Louis' victory over Los Angeles.

Brayden Schenn scored twice, including an empty-netter, Vince Dunn also scored, and Jordan Binnington made 33 saves. Jeff Carter and Alex Iafallo scored for the Kings.

STARS 2, DUCKS 1

DALLAS (AP) - Denis Gurianov ended a personal scoring drought with two first-period goals, and Ben Bishop made 29 saves to help Dallas beat Anaheim.

Gurianov hadn't scored in 26 games since his first NHL goal on Nov. 18, 2018.

Max Comtois scored for Anaheim.

A PATTERN IS FORMING

Colorado and Vegas have only faced each other a half-dozen times during the regular season, but there are two distinct trends that could offer clarity for bettors as the Avalanche visit the Golden Knights on Friday night.

The home team has won all six meetings between the teams, with the Avalanche coming off back-to-back wins in their final two meetings of 2018-19. And four of the six encounters have finished below the number, with only the first and last meetings (seven goals apiece) bucking the trend.

With both teams playing solid defensive hockey, we like the Vegas/Under combo here.


EARLY FIREWORKS

The Toronto Maple Leafs and Montreal Canadiens have added a little spice to their historic rivalry in recent meetings, and will look to continue their offensive success in the latest edition Saturday at Bell Centre. The teams have played consecutive 6-5 decisions, with Montreal winning both; they've also combined for 7+ goals in four consecutive meetings, with each of those games featuring three first-period goals.

Toronto has scored 13 first-period goals so far this season – second-most in the NHL entering Thursday night's games – while Montreal ranks sixth with 11. Bettors should consider the Over on the first-period total.


GETTING THE POINT

Johnny Gaudreau is off to a slow start to the season – at least, by the standards he set last year – but he could be facing the perfect get-right spot Saturday night as the Calgary Flames play the Winnipeg Jets in Regina for the Heritage Classic. Gaudreau is well off his 99-point pace from a season ago with three goals and six assists through 11 games, which might cool interest in his goal or point props this weekend.

However, he has nine goals and nine assists in 14 career games vs. the Jets, and lit them up for four goals in three regular-season meetings last season. We're confident in Gaudreau as a strong option on all scoring props.


BROAD STREET BULLIES NO MORE

Don't expect much chicanery Sunday night as the New York Islanders entertain the Philadelphia Flyers. The Isles enter the weekend having spent just 32 minutes, 39 seconds shorthanded, the second-lowest rate in the league. The Flyers are No. 1 on the list at 27:23 for the season, and the teams have been shorthanded just 39 combined times so far (Philadelphia 20, N.Y. Islanders 19).

Add in the fact that the Isles also rank last in the NHL in power-play opportunities (12) and time spent with the man advantage (16:34), and the Under looks like a strong option given what could be a shortage of PP time.


GOALIE PROFILE: DARCY KUEMPER, ARIZONA COYOTES

Kuemper took a big step forward in his first full season in Arizona, posting a 2.33 goals-against average, a .925 save percentage and five shutouts as the Coyotes posted the second-most Under results in the Western Conference last season.

The 29-year-old has been in another stratosphere so far in 2019-20, his 1.68 goals-against average ranking third among qualified netminders and his .944 save percentage good for second overall. And that's a major reason why the Coyotes are 2-5-1 O/U to date, and will continue to be a superior Under play moving forward.


INJURY UPDATE, F MIKKO RANTANEN, COLORADO AVALANCHE

The Avalanche are off to a hot start, but could be in trouble for the next little while. Rantanen suffered a leg injury after his skate become stuck in the ice during Monday's game against the St. Louis Blues, and Avalanche head coach Jared Bednar confirmed that the talented winger is considered "week-to-week".

While it isn't clear when Rantanen will return, Bednar did suggest that the injury shouldn't keep Rantanen out for more than a month. Rantanen has racked up 12 points through his first nine games of the season; Colorado is 7-1-1 SU entering Friday night's showdown with host Vegas.


HAT TRICK TRENDS

• NHL teams continue to offer no measurable league-wide edge when it comes to totals action. After Unders outnumbered Overs 24-23 over the previous seven days, Overs have now converted 70 total times for the season compared to Unders at 68. Extra-time games have skewed slightly below the total, with 17 Unders compared to 15 Overs.

• We shared Peter MacDougall's incredible run of Overs last week – but which NHL official has been the best Under play through the first few weeks of the NHL season? That mantle belongs squarely to Chris Rooney, whose games have gone below the total six times through his first seven assignments; those games are averaging a paltry 4.43 goals.

• The Buffalo Sabres and Avalanche remain the biggest profit makers in the league to date, with the Sabres at +7.03 units and the Avalanche (+5.05) the only other team north of five units. At the other ends, the Dallas Stars continue to trail the pack at -4.85 units with the New Jersey Deevils (-4.46) in hot pursuit. The defending-champion Blues are at -1.94 units to date.

Avalanche beats Golden Knights 6-1 to improve to 8-1-1

LAS VEGAS (AP) Nadem Kadri and Matt Calvert each scored twice, Pierre-Edouard Bellemare had a goal and two assists against his former team and the Colorado Avalanche beat the Vegas Golden Knights 6-1 on Friday.

Cale Makar also scored and Phillip Grubauer made 25 saves to help the Avalanche improve to 8-1-1.

William Karlsson scored for Vegas in the matinee game on Nevada Day.

Marc-Andre Fleury was replaced by Garret Sparks with 7:24 left in the second period after allowing four goals and making 22 saves. Sparks allowed two goals and made 13 saves in his first appearance with Vegas.

SABRES 2, RED WINGS 0

DETROIT (AP) - Linus Ullmark made 41 saves, Sam Reinhart scored his fifth goal and Buffalo beat Detroit to improve to 9-2-1.

Reinhart also assisted on Jake McCabe's first goal of the season, and Jack Eichel had two assists.

Jimmy Howard stopped 23 shots for Detroit. The Red Wings have lost seven in a row.

MAPLE LEAFS 4, SHARKS 1

TORONTO (AP) - Morgan Rielly broke a tie with 5:29 left and Toronto beat San Jose, spoiling Patrick Marleau's return to Scotiabank Arena.

The 40-year-old Marleau spent the last two seasons with the Maple Leafs.

Ilya Mikheyev had a goal and an assist, Jake Muzzin and Auston Matthews added goals, and Frederik Andersen made 16 saves for Toronto. Kevin Labanc scored for San Jose, and Martin Jones stopped 23 shots.

ISLANDERS 4, SENATORS 2

OTTAWA, Ontario (AP) - Nick Leddy scored his second goal of the first period on a penalty shot and New York beat Ottawa for its sixth straight victory.

Matt Martin and Derick Brassard also scored and Thomas Greiss made 30 saves to help the Islanders improve to 6-3-0 and drop the Senators to 2-6-1. Tyler Ennis scored twice for Ottawa.

COYOTES 5, DEVILS 3

NEWARK, N.J. (AP) - Barrett Hayton scored his first NHL goal early in the third period, Antti Raanta made 32 saves and Arizona overcame two deficits to beat Jack Hughes and New Jersey.

Nick Schmaltz, Michael Grabner, Oliver Ekman-Larsson and Clayton Keller also scored to help the Coyotes win for the fifth time in six games. Hughes, the No. 1 pick in this year's draft, scored once and set up goals by Sami Vatanen and Pavel Zacha.

CAPITALS 6, CANUCKS 5, SO.

VANCOUVER, British Columbia (AP) - Nicklas Backstrom scored the shootout winner and Washington rallied from a four-goal deficit and beat Vancouver.

The Canucks led by four goals late in the second period, but couldn't withstand a late comeback by the Capitals.

Evgeny Kuznetsov and Michal Kempny each had two goals for the Capitals. Lars Eller had a goal and an assist.

Goalie Ilya Samsonov stopped 29 of 34 shots for Washington in his fifth start of the season.

Tim Schaller scored twice for Vancouver, Brock Boeser had a goal and an assist, and Elias Pettersson and Jake Virtanen added goals.

Jacob Markstrom stopped 24 shots for the Canucks.

Flyers beat Blue Jackets as 'over' hits

PHILADELPHIA (AP) Kevin Hayes scored the go-ahead short-handed goal late in Philadelphia's five-goal third period, and the Flyers rallied to beat the Columbus Blue Jackets 7-4 Saturday night.

James van Riemsdyk had two goals and an assist, Jake Voracek added a goal and two assists, Shayne Gostisbehere had a goal and an assist, and Michael Raffl and Travis Konecny also scored for Philadelphia. Hayes and Ivan Provorov also each had two assists, and Brian Elliott finished with 22 saves to help the Flyers end a five-game losing streak to their Metropolitan Division rivals.

Boone Jenner scored twice, and Pierre-Luc Dubois and Josh Anderson also had goals for Columbus. Joonas Korpisalo stopped 39 shots.

Anderson's goal 2:15 into the third period gave the Blue Jackets a 4-2 lead. The Flyers then scored five times in an 8:54 stretch in the latter half of the period to get the win.

PREDATORS 3, LIGHTNING 2, OT

TAMPA, Fla. (AP) - Ryan Ellis scored 3:15 into overtime to lift Nashville past Tampa Bay.

Ellis scored from the left circle shortly after the Predators failed to score on power play that resulted from the Lightning having too many men on the ice.

Calle Jarnkrok and Roman Josi also scored, and Juuse Saros stopped 28 shots for Nashville, which improved to 13-1-2 against Tampa Bay in the last 16 meetings. The Lightning's lone regulation win against the Predatrs this decade came Dec. 19, 2013.

Tampa Bay got goals from Steven Stamkos and Tyler Johnson. Curtis McElhinney made 37 saves.

Nashville played without forwards Matt Duchene and Filip Forsberg, who were out with lower body injuries.

Josi got Nashville even at 2 on the power play at 14:47 of the third. He added two assists, including on Ellis' game-winner.

WILD 5, KINGS 1

ST. PAUL, Minn. (AP) - Eric Staal scored the go-ahead goal late in the second period, and Alex Stalock stopped 30 shots to lead Minnesota.

Gerald Mayhew, Joel Eriksson Ek, Mikko Koivu and Jared Spurgeon also scored, and Matt Dumba added two assists as the Wild won for the third time in four games after losing six of the first seven.

Ben Hutton scored for Los Angeles, and Jonathan Quick made 22 saves for the Kings, who have lost two straight.

With the game tied at 1, Staal took a pass from Jason Zucker at the blue line, skated in alone on Quick's left and beat him over his far shoulder for his third goal of the season at 17:04 of the second.

BRUINS 3, BLUES 0

BOSTON (AP) - David Pastrnak scored his team-leading 11th goal, Tuukka Rask stopped 26 shots for his second shutout this season and Boston won a rematch of the Stanley Cup Final.

It was the first meeting between the teams since St. Louis won its first Cup last season, skating with the trophy around the TD Garden ice in Boston on June 12 after a 4-1 victory in Game 7.

Anders Bjork also scored for Boston. Brandon Carlo added an empty-net goal with 49 seconds left.

Rask recorded his 47th career shutout. He's 5-0-1 in six starts this season, picking up his solid play that carried Boston to the final.

Jordan Binnington made 21 saves for the Blues, who won their previous two games.

CANADIENS 5, MAPLE LEAFS 2

MONTREAL (AP) - Jonathan Drouin scored twice on breakaways, and Montreal beat Toronto.

Brendan Gallagher, Joel Armia and Nick Suzuki also scored for the Canadiens, who snapped a two-game losing skid. Carey Price made 29 saves.

Jake Muzzin and Andreas Johnsson scored for the Maple Leafs, who were playing the second game of a back-to-back. Backup Michael Hutchinson made 33 saves. Frederik Andersen led Toronto to a 4-1 victory over San Jose on Friday.

DUCKS 5, AVALANCHE 2

DENVER (AP) - Ryan Getzlaf scored a power-play goal in the second period and Ryan Miller stopped 35 shots to help Anaheim snap a three-game skid.

Adam Henrique and Carter Rowney scored in the first period, and Max Comtois and Jakob Silfverberg had goals in the third as the Ducks handed the Avalanche their first home loss of the season. Hampus Lindholm had three assists for Anaheim.

Anaheim handed Colorado its last regular-season home loss, a 5-3 win on March 15. The Avalanche won their last six home games of last season and the first four in Denver to begin this year.

Nathan MacKinnon and Joonas Donskoi each had a goal and Pavel Francouz stopped 22 shots for the Avalanche, who came off a 4-1-1 road trip that wrapped up with a 6-1 win at Vegas on Friday night.

PENGUINS 3, STARS 0

DALLAS (AP) - Matt Murray made 25 saves for his first shutout of the season, and Dominik Kahun and Bryan Rust scored in the third period to lead Pittsburgh.

Brandon Tanev added an empty-net goal with 1:14 to play.

Kahun's first goal came in his 12th NHL game. Rust was playing in his first game this season after being injured in the final preseason game.

Both goals came from near the net against Ben Bishop, who stopped 24 shots.

The Penguins totaled only 11 shots on goal in the first two periods but outshot Dallas 16-3 in the third.

HURRICANES 4, BLACKHAWKS 0

RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) - Petr Mrazek stopped 32 shots for his second shutout in 12 days and Andrei Svechnikov scored twice in Carolina's victory over Chicago.

Nino Niederreiter and Jordan Staal also scored.

Chicago has lost four straight.

Blues blow lead, rally past Wings in OT

DETROIT (AP) David Perron scored at 1:28 of overtime to give the St. Louis Blues a 5-4 victory over the Detroit Red Wings on Sunday night.

The Blues blew a two-goal lead in the third-period lead and needed Ryan O'Reilly's late goal to send it to overtime. The Red Wings have lost eight straight.

Perron scored from the left circle after circling with the puck for a few seconds. He has six goals this season.

O'Reilly had two goals and two assists and Perron added three assists. Brayden Schenn had a goal and an assist, Zach Sanford also scored, and Jordan Binnington made 29 saves for the defending champion Blues.

Dylan Larkin and Tyler Bertuzzi each had a goal and an assist for Detroit, Filip Hronek and Valtteri Filppula added goals, and Jonathan Bernier made 15 stops.

O'Reilly's power-play goal tied it at 4-4 with 4:18 left in regulation. He put in a one-timer from the slot.

BRUINS 7, RANGERS 4

NEW YORK (AP) - Brad Marchand had two goals and three assists and Boston scored four times in the second period to beat New York.

Patrice Bergeron scored three goals for his fifth regular-season hat trick, Charlie Coyle and Zdeno Chara each had a goal and an assist, and David Pastrnak added five assists to help the Bruins improve to 8-1-2 this season. Jaroslav Halak stopped 25 shots as Boston earned a point for the seventh straight game (5-0-2).

Michael Haley, Pavel Buchnevich, Chris Kreider and Brady Skjei scored for New York, and Henrik Lundqvist made 27 saves before being pulled after two periods. The Rangers are 1-5-1 in their last seven.

ISLANDERS 5, FLYERS 3

UNIONDALE, N.Y. (AP) - Mathew Barzal had a goal and an assist and New York beat Philadelphia to extend its winning streak to seven games.

Anders Lee, Derick Brassard, Ross Johnston and Ryan Pulock also scored and Semyon Varlamov stopped 28 shots for his third straight victory.

Jakub Voracek, Travis Konecny, Claude Giroux scored for the Flyers. Carter Hart made nine saves on 14 shots before being replaced by Brian Elliott midway through the second period.

BLACKHAWKS 5, KINGS 1

CHICAGO (AP) - Dylan Strome had two goals and assisted on linemate Alex DeBrincat's score to help Chicago beat Los Angeles to end a four-game skid.

DeBrincat set up both of Strome's goals as the two former junior hockey teammates clicked again and sparked Chicago's attack. David Kampf and Drake Caggiula also scored and Robin Lehner made 38 saves.

Blackhawks defenseman Brent Seabrook was a healthy scratch for the second time in his career.

Sean Walker scored for Los Angeles.

GOLDEN KNIGHTS 5, DUCKS 2

LAS VEGAS (AP) - Nicolas Roy scored his first career NHL goal in Vegas' victory over Anaheim.

Making his first appearance for the Golden Knights, Roy split two defenders and slipped a shot through goalie John Gibson's pads for what turned out to be the winning goal.

Mark Stone, Ryan Reaves, William Karlsson and Paul Stastny also scored for Vegas and Marc-Andre Fleury made 13 saves. Ryan Getzlaf and Adam Henrique scored for the Ducks.

PANTHERS 6, OILERS 2

EDMONTON, Alberta (AP) - Brian Boyle and Jayce Hawryluk each had a goal and an assist and Florida scored three goals in just over two minutes to open the second period against Edmonton.

Aaron Ekblad, Noel Acciari, Evgenii Dadonov and Frank Vatrano also scored for Florida. The Panthers improved to 5-2-4, earning at least a point in eight straight games.

James Neal and Leon Draisaitl scored for the Oilers. They have lost three of four to fall to 8-3-1.

SENATORS 5, SHARKS 2

OTTAWA, Ontario (AP) - Nick Paul had two goals and an assist for his first multipoint game in the NHL in Ottawa's victory over San Jose.

Brady Tkachuk had a goal and two assists, Connor Brown and Anthony Duclair also scored and Craig Anderson stopped 34 shots.

Evander Kane and Kevin Labanc scored for the Sharks. They are 1-2-1 on a five-game trip that ends Tuesday night in Boston.
