    • Reimer helps Hurricanes end Flamesâ?? 7-game win streak
      December 15, 2019
      By The Associated Press

CALGARY, Alberta (AP) James Reimer made 32 stops and Warren Foegele scored twice and the Carolina Hurricanes ended Calgary's seven-game winning streak with a 4-0 victory over the Flames on Saturday.

It's the second shutout of the season for Reimer, who has won five of his past six starts and improved to 7-5-0 on the season.

The 31-year-old was at his best in the first and third periods. He kept the game scoreless in the opening 20 minutes, despite Calgary holding a 12-4 edge in shots. When the Flames pressed in the third period, fueled by four power plays in the final 11 minutes, he once again stood tall.

Brock McGinn and Dougie Hamilton also scored for Carolina, which has points in five straight (4-0-1). The Hurricanes' five-game road trip will continue Tuesday in Winnipeg.

Calgary lost for the first time since Geoff Ward took over from Bill Peters behind the bench. The 57-year-old had won his first six games after being named interim head coach on Nov. 29.

      ISLANDERS 3, SABRES 2, OT

UNIONDALE, N.Y. (AP) - Anthony Beauvillier scored in overtime to lift the Islanders over Buffalo, extending New York's home winning streak to six games.

Beauvillier scored on a breakaway at 3:04 against Sabres goalie Linus Ullmark for his 10th goal of the season. He finished off a sequence in overtime in which he accidentally got tangled up with Ullmark in the crease, then was tripped in the Sabres zone before he corralled the puck for the winning play.

The Islanders improved to 13-2-1 overall between Nassau Coliseum and Brooklyn's Barclays Center this season while the Sabres had their three-game winning streak snapped.

Semyon Varmalov made 33 saves for the victory.

Jordan Eberle had snapped a 1-1 tie with a goal early in the third period to give the Islanders a 2-1 lead, but Sabres captain Jack Eichel tied it with a power-play goal at 18:14 after the Sabres pulled Ullmark for an extra skater.

Eichel's 23rd goal of the season was assisted by Rasmus Ristolainen and sent the game into overtime.

      DEVILS 2, COYOTES 1

GLENDALE, Ariz. (AP) - Kyle Palmieri scored the tiebreaking goal in the third period, and New Jersey held on to snap a seven-game losing streak.

Jesper Boqvist also scored, and Michael McLeod and Miles Wood each had two assists to help the Devils get their first win this month. Mackenzie Blackwood stopped 31 shots.

Alex Goligoski scored for Arizona, which has lost five of its last seven home games but remains in sole possession of first place in the Pacific Division. Vinnie Hinostroza picked up his fourth assist in two games, and Darcy Kuemper finished with 31 saves.

Palmieri's team-leading 12th goal of the season came with 8:26 left in the third period as he flipped the puck high into net past Kuemper.

The Devils played without Taylor Hall for the second straight game amid trade talks - with the Coyotes mentioned as one of the teams interested in acquiring the forward.

      DUCKS 4, RANGERS 3, SO

ANAHEIM, Calif. (AP) - Jakob Silfverberg and Ondrej Kase scored in the shootout after Hampus Lindholm tied the game on the power play with 1:46 remaining in the third period and Anaheim rallied for a win over New York.

Silfverberg also had a power-play goal for the Ducks. Erik Gudbranson also scored, and John Gibson stopped three shots in the shootout after making 29 saves through overtime.

Mika Zibanejad had two goals for the second straight game and Artemi Panarin scored for the fourth consecutive game, but the Rangers ended up going 2-1-1 on their four-game road trip.

Henrik Lundqvist made 39 saves, and the Rangers still have not won consecutive games this month.

Lindholm made it 3-all at 18:14 from the high slot just as Gibson was making his way toward the bench for the extra attacker with Brady Skjei in the box for tripping.

SENATORS 4, BLUE JACKETS 3, OT

OTTAWA, Ontario (AP) - Anthony Duclair had a hat trick, including a power-play goal at 1:56 of overtime, and Ottawa topped Columbus.

Duclair has 18 goals on the season, including eight in his past five games.

Connor Brown also scored for the Senators. Anders Nilsson stopped 38 shots.

Alexandre Texier had two third-period goals for the Blue Jackets, who rallied from a 3-1 deficit to force overtime. Cam Atkinson added a first-period goal.

Elvis Merzlikins started the game, but was pulled after the first period where he allowed two goals on eight shots. Joonas Korpisalo came on in relief and allowed two goals on 19 shots.

Nilsson made a couple of fantastic saves in overtime, one on Atkinson and one on Oliver Bjorkstrand.

The Senators led 3-1 going into the third, but the Blue Jackets cut the lead to one four minutes into the third as Texier, from the slot, slid one between Nilsson's pads. Texier tied the game with his second of the game midway through the period.

      WILD 4, FLYERS 1

ST. PAUL, Minn. (AP) - Eric Staal scored twice and Minnesota kept up its winning ways at home.

Zach Parise also scored and Carson Soucy added an empty-netter to help the Wild improve to 9-0-3 in the past 12 games at Xcel Energy Center. Only Boston (17) and the New York Islanders (13) have longer home point streaks this season.

The Wild were near the bottom of the league after winning just six of their first 18 games, but they are 10-1-4 in their last 15.

James van Riemsdyk scored and Carter Hart made 24 saves for Philadelphia. The Flyers have dropped three of four after winning five straight and lost back-to-back games for the first time since Oct. 27-29.

      BRUINS 4, PANTHERS 2

SUNRISE, Fla. (AP) - David Pastrnak scored twice to help Boston snap a five-game winless streak.

Keith Yandle and Mark Pysyk scored for the Panthers, who lost their third straight. Sergei Bobrovsky made 38 saves, including 21 in the first period.

Florida's Aleksander Barkov had to be helped off the ice by teammates late in the third period with an apparent leg injury after being forced into the boards by Boston's Charlie McAvoy.

      STARS 4, PREDATORS 1

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) - Anton Khudobin stopped 37 shots and Dallas won for the fourth time in five games.

Blake Comeau, Roope Hintz, Jamie Oleksiak and Andrew Cogliano each scored in the second period after the Stars fell behind. Alexander Radulov had two assists.

Austin Watson scored for Nashville and Pekka Rinne finished with 18 saves. The Predators have lost two straight.

This was the first meeting between the teams since the Stars eliminated the Predators in the first round of the playoffs last season.

Nashville on the scoreboard first, as Dan Hamhuis fired a shot from just inside the blue line that was deflected by Watson from the slot at 1:04 of the second period.

      PENGUINS 5, KINGS 4, SO

PITTSBURGH (AP) - Bryan Rust scored twice in regulation and got the lone goal in the shootout to lift Pittsburgh.

Rust faked a shot on the forehand and flipped a blocker-side backhander past Kings goaltender Jonathan Quick for the deciding goal. The Kings had a chance to continue the shootout, but the puck rolled off Adrian Kempe's stick, giving the Penguins their fifth win in six games.

Rust, who scored the overtime winner Thursday against Columbus, had a 5-on-3 power-play goal in the second period. Teddy Blueger and Jack Johnson scored third-period goals, while Jake Guentzel and Kris Letang both had three assists. Pittsburgh has points in 17 of its last 22 games, including 13 wins.

Montreal outshot Detroit 43-20 but had its three-game win streak snapped. Carey Price made 18 saves in defeat.

The Red Wings snapped a 12-game winless streak (0-10-2) by beating the Winnipeg Jets 5-2 on Thursday but entered the Bell Centre with the league's worst record and worst offense.

                          STRUGGLING ALL-STAR

The Nashville Predators and, more specifically, goaltender Pekka Rinne are in a slump. The veteran goalie gave up four more goals on Saturday which brings his total to 29 goals allowed in his last eight games. On Monday, Rinne and the Preds will travel to the Big Apple to take on the New York Rangers.

The Rangers averaged nearly four goals a game over their most recent four-game road trip as their power play went 4-for-12 as well. New York also sits fourth in the league in expected goals since December 8.

Nashville has recently been playing better than usual on it's penalty kill, as it has killed off its last seven penalties, but still sits 24th in the league at 77.5 percent. The Preds are due to give up a PP tally or two and the young guys from New York might oblige. Take the Rangers’ team total Over 2.5.

The Ottawa Senators have hit the Over in six of their last eight games as their scoring chance shooting percentage sits fifth-best in December. They have also allowed their opponents to score three or more goals in six of their last eight, making Tuesday’s match against the Tampa Bay Lighting a great spot for an Over.

The Lightning may be the most disappointing team this year as they sit fifth in the Atlantic Division. The Bolts are just 2-5 SU at home in their last seven but the goal-light operator has been busy at the Amalie Arena as Tampa has hit the Over nine times in its last twelve home games.

Tampa Bay has the second-best power play in the league and could get ample opportunity to prove themselves against the Senators’ who are averaging nearly four minor penalties a game in December. Take the Over 6.5 on this Tuesday matchup.

                          STINGY NETMINDERS

The Carolina Hurricanes have not allowed a regulation goal in over 130 minutes of hockey — a streak that spans three games. On Wednesday, they will square off with the Winnipeg Jets who bounced back Sunday night with a win after losing to the lowly Red Wings on Saturday.

Wednesday night’s tilt has the looks of a low-scoring affair. Both Carolina and Winnipeg sit in the Top-6 in goals against on the season but have been even stingier in December. Combined, the Jets and Canes have allowed just 22 goals in their 11 games this month.

Winnipeg is 4-9-2 O/U at home this year and are 2-5-1 O/U in its last eight while the Hurricanes are 2-9 O/U in their last 11 and 7-9 O/U on the road this year. Hit the Under 5.5 on Tuesday and if it opens at 6, give it a double-tap.

                          SNOWSTORM HEADED TO CHICAGO

The Colorado Avalanche will take their four-game road winning streak into St. Louis on Monday and then to Chicago on Wednesday. Colorado’s offense is back to full health and has been getting scoring production from its Top-9 forwards. That's bad news for the Blackhawks who have allowed their opponents to score four or more goals in seven of their last nine and are 2-4 ATS in their last six.

Colorado has been one of the league's best traveling teams this year and are 11-6 SU on the road and are averaging 3.4 goals a game while playing better defensive hockey than any other club over their last 10 games.

With how hot (and deep) the offense has been of late as well as the stellar play from goalie Pavel Francouz, we are going to ride the Avalanche -1.5 Puck Line on Wednesday night.

GOALIE PROFILE: SEMYON VARLAMOV, NEW YORK ISLANDERS

Nobody thought that Semyon Varlamov would be 11-3-2 with a 2.24 goals against and a .928 save percentage halfway through December, but here we are. The Russian netminder finds himself among the league leaders in most goalie stats and has been a winner in each of his last four starts.

On Tuesday, the Islanders will host the Nashville Predators who will have to do something most teams haven’t been able to do this year, which is score goals in Long Island. Varlamov and the Islanders have not allowed an opponent to score more than two goals at home in six of their last eight. New York has just shut it down defensively this month and allows the fewest goals against at home.

We feel that the Islanders’ ML is the right play here, but if it is outpriced (below -140) we have no problems taking the Under 2.5 on the Predators’ team total.

INJURY UPDATE: F JARED SPURGEON, MINNESOTA WILD

The Minnesota Wild have climbed up the Western Conference standings of late having picked up the second-most points in the West over their last 10 games. Things could be getting even better with the return of defenseman Jared Spurgeon this week.

Spurgeon has been out since December 3 and was second on the team in average ice time at 23:15 a game. Getting the D-man back for Tuesday’s contest against the Vegas Golden Knights could be a big boost for the Wild’s special teams as Spurgeon plays on the top penalty-killing unit and the second power-play unit. The Wild ML should be a great value with Minnesota playing on the road.

                          HAT TRICK TRENDS

                          • The Colorado Avalanche have the league’s best away record on first-period Overs. The Avs are 14-3 O/U first-period totals on the road and will head to St. Louis on Monday to take on the Blues who are 4-2 O/U first-period totals in their last six.

                          • Under bettors had a great week last week as the Unders in 26 of the 44 games (59%). There are fewer totals of 6.5 these days as the league has seen the Under trend take over. Monday’s opening lines listed zero games at 6.5. The Washington at Columbus total of 6 is looking like our favorite for the Under.

                          • On Tuesday, the Ottawa Senators will face the Lightning in what will be the tail end of a back-to-back. The Sens should be big underdogs, especially on the road. Ottawa is 5-5 SU in their last 10 games when being a +150 underdog or higher.

                              December 16, 2019
                              By The Associated Press

COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) Joonas Korpisalo stopped 30 shots in his third career shutout, and the Columbus Blue Jackets beat the Washington Capitals 3-0 on Monday night.

It was just the second win in eight games for Columbus, with both coming against NHL leading-Washington.

Oliver Bjorkstrand scored twice for the Blue Jackets, and Eric Robinson had the other goal.

Braden Holtby stopped 18 shots for Washington, which lost for just the second time in its last 10 games and suffered its first road defeat since Nov. 20.

                              BLUES 5, AVALANCHE 2

ST. LOUIS (AP) - David Perron scored three times in his fifth career hat trick, powering St. Louis to the victory.

Vince Dunn and Jordan Kyrou also scored for the Blues, who remained atop the Central Division with 48 points. The Avalanche stayed in second with 45.

Jordan Binnington made 26 saves in his third consecutive victory.

Colorado goalie Philipp Grubauer made his first appearance since he suffered a lower-body injury Dec. 7 in Boston. He stopped 31 shots.

Nazem Kadri and Mikko Rantanen scored in the second period for the Avalanche.

                              PREDATORS 5, RANGERS 2

NEW YORK (AP) - Roman Josi had two goals and an assist, leading Nashville to the victory.

Rocco Grimaldi, Mattias Ekholm and Ryan Ellis also scored to help the Predators win for the third time in five games. Juuse Saros stopped 39 shots.

Chris Kreider and Artemi Panarin scored for the Rangers, losers of three of their last five (2-2-1). Alexandar Georgiev made 19 saves.

The Rangers went 0 for 4 on the power play, with Saros stopping all 11 shots during the man advantages.

                              OILERS 2, STARS 1

DALLAS (AP) - Leon Draisaitl scored another power-play goal for Edmonton, and Mikko Koskinen made 34 saves.

Edmonton has scored on an NHL-leading 31% of its power plays, including 10 man-advantage goals in its past eight games.

Koskinen made 17 saves in the third period. He allowed only Tyler Seguin's goal with 2:37 to play after the Stars had pulled Ben Bishop for an extra skater.

Zack Kassian also scored for the Oilers, and Connor McDavid had two assists.

                              PANTHERS 6, SENATORS 1

SUNRISE, Fla. (AP) - Noel Acciari scored three times for his first career hat trick, and the Panthers snapped a three-game losing streak.

Aleksander Barkov, Mike Matheson and Dominic Toninato also scored for Florida, and Sergei Bobrovsky stopped 29 shots in his sixth straight start. Jonathan Huberdeau had four assists, giving him 400 career points in 500 NHL games.

Artem Anisimov scored for the Senators, who have lost eight of their past 11 games. Anders Nilsson made 25 saves.

Florida grabbed control with five goals in the second period.
