  • Saturday’s 6-pack

Some early point spreads for NFL games this fall:
    — Week 2: Browns (-2.5) @ Jets
    — Week 4: Cowboys @ Saints (-.5.5)
    — Week 7: Patriots (-6) @ Jets
    — Week 8: Packers @ Chiefs (-6)
    — Week 14: Chiefs @ Patriots (-2.5)
    — Week 15: Colts @ Saints (-3.5)

    Quote of the Day
“They didn’t like the Gary Sanchez thing with the Home Run Derby, but you can’t fix stupid, you know?”
Logan Morrison, back in April 2018, talking about baseball fans in the Bronx. Morrison signed a minor league deal with the Bronx Bombers this week

    Saturday’s quiz

Four of the top five picks in the 1989 NFL Draft are Hall of Famers (Troy Aikman, Barry Sanders, Derrick Thomas, Deion Sanders); Tony Mandarich was the #2 pick that year, an offensive lineman from Michigan State. Which team drafted Mandarich?

    Friday’s quiz
Al Pacino coached the Miami Sharks in Any Given Sunday.

    Thursday’s quiz
Miami Marlins have won two World Series; they’ve never won the NL East.

    *************************************

    Saturday’s List of 13: Clearing out a cluttered mind…….

    13) Oakland Raiders sent their scouts home for the weekend; they’re not expected to be back before the draft next weekend. Supposedly, Raiders’ hierarchy (Gruden) doesn’t trust all his people, but doesn’t know exactly who he doesn’t trust.

Apparently this isn’t all that unusual; Gil Brandt told a story this week from 1987, where they told one scout about this LB they want to draft (they didn’t really want to). Two days later, a writer in Dallas posts this article about how the Cowboys are going to take the LB, which outed the scout as a leaker. He then became an ex-scout.

    12) Other former front office guys have been saying on Twitter this week that the last 8-10 years, teams have been limiting access to a team’s draft board to only the top 3-4 football people.

    11) Blue Jays are calling up top prospect Vladimir Guerrero Jr; he is expected to make his big league debut on Tuesday against the Giants.

    10) College basketball is getting to the point where any returning player who scored double figures for a low-to-mid major is getting poached by bigger schools. Norfolk State’s leading scorer entered the transfer portal the week; it makes handicapping during the season that much harder. Will the new player fit in? How much does his departure hurt his former team?

Can’t be much fun for guys who coach in low/mid-majors.

    9) Was reading something this week about how they’re using major league baseballs at the AAA level for the first time this year, and home runs have spiked early in the season. Homers in the International League are up 39%; in the Pacific Coast League, 32%.

Same thing hasn’t happened in AA or A ball, so it makes you wonder……

    8) San Antonio Spurs’ Derrick White played three years of D-II ball at Colorado–Colorado Springs, transferred and played his senior year for the Colorado Buffaloes; he had zero D-I scholarship offers out of high school. None.

This year, he played 25.8 mpg for the Spurs, scored 9.9 ppg. He scored 36 points in the Spurs’ Game 3 win over Denver Thursday. Good for him.

    7) Baseball transactions:
    — Red Sox put IF Eduardo Núñez (back) on IL.
    — Padres put OF Manuel Margot on the paternity list, called up Jose Pirela.
    — Mets put Jacob deGrom (elbow) on the IL.

    6) NCAA relaxed some transfer rules for freshmen: Incoming freshmen who enroll in summer school and receive financial aid can transfer and play immediately without a waiver if their coach leaves prior to the first day of fall classes.

This involves situations where a coach gets fired late in the spring or in summer, like couple years ago when Ohio State fired Thad Matta. It does not include football players who are early enrollees.

    5) Not sure what the wisdom of the four outfielder shift is; seems like having four infielders would be a better idea. Lot of the guys you use the four OF shift with, if they hit it in the air to the outfield, it is going over the fence anyway.

    4) Former UNLV coach Marvin Menzies signed on to be an assistant coach for Dan Majerle at Grand Canyon University in the WAC.

    3) Mets’ ace Jacob deGrom will have an MRI on his elbow Monday, which is bad news for the Mets and worse news for my fantasy team.

I mentioned a few days ago how deGrom had trouble putting hitters away in his last two starts, and this is probably a big reason why.

    2) Draft trivia; Kyler Murray’s father Kevin was the 11th player taken in the 1982 baseball draft, one spot after Bill Ripken (Cal’s brother).

    1) Nick Saban will have hip replacement surgery on Monday; can’t imagine he’d be much fun to have as a patient in the hospital. Good luck to all the nurses……..

        • NHL Stanley Cup playoffs best bets and prop predictions: Jets, Blues take flight in third
          Monty Andrews

Will another higher seed bite the dust Saturday? The Winnipeg Jets are on the brink of elimination as they visit the St. Louis Blues in Game 6 of their Western Conference first-round series – and if they lose, they'll be the third higher-seeded team to be knocked out of the Stanley Cup playoffs, joining the Tampa Bay Lightning and Calgary Flames. Here are the top betting trends to monitor as the second-round playoff field slowly begins to take shape:

          DALLAS STARS AT NASHVILLE PREDATORS

          Moneyline Odds: Dallas +125/Nashville -145
          Over/Under: 5 goals
          Series Price: Dallas +125/Nashville -175
Start Time: 3 p.m. ET, Bridgestone Arena, Nashville, Tenn.

Dallas and Nashville are staring at a typically low total for the fifth game of their Western Conference quarterfinal series – but Saturday might be a good day to consider the over, even ignoring the Stars' 5-1 victory in Game 4. Nashville have seen six or more goals scored in six of their nine afternoon games this season, with the other three coming in at exactly five goals; Dallas has gone over the five-goal threshold in five of eight afternoon contests in 2018-19. We like the O5 in this one (+105).

WINNIPEG JETS AT ST. LOUIS BLUES

Moneyline Odds: Winnipeg +125/St. Louis -145
          Over/Under: 5.5 goals
Series Price: St. Louis -400/Winnipeg +280
Start Time: 7 p.m. ET, Enterprise Center, St. Louis, Mo.

Every Stanley Cup playoff season, there's one series that bucks the home-ice trend – and it's clear that this Jets-Blues series fits the bill in 2019. The road team has prevailed in all five games so far, which bodes well for the Jets as they look to stay alive in St. Louis. But the more intriguing trend from a betting perspective is the fact that the third period has been the highest-scoring frame in four of five games, producing 13 of the 27 goals in the series. We like that trend to continue Saturday (+230).

If you're looking for a player goal prop, it might be best to ignore the Blues' side of the ice; no St. Louis player has more than two goals in the series, while nine different skaters have converted at least one. But on the Winnipeg side, bettors should consider Kyle Connor, who scored three goals in the two games in St. Louis while firing nine shots on goal in those victories. Connor had 34 goals during the regular season, and might be the Jets' best bet of hitting the scoresheet in Game 5.

          CAROLINA HURRICANES AT WASHINGTON CAPITALS

          Moneyline Odds: Carolina +115/Washington -135
          Over/Under: 5.5 goals
          Series Price: Carolina +125/Washington -175
Start Time: 8 p.m. ET, Capital One Arena, Washington, D.C.

Home team dominance has been the order of the series between the Hurricanes and Capitals, with the hosts winning each of the first four games. And the visitors have had a particularly hard time making headway in the opening period, with the home team leading after 20 minutes in every game while outscoring the opposition 7-1 along the way. Taking the host Capitals -0.5 at +175 looks like a strong play given how this series has progressed so far.

            • Blues beat Jets 3-2 in Game 6 to advance to 2nd round
              April 20, 2019
              By The Associated Press

ST. LOUIS (AP) Jaden Schwartz scored three times and Jordan Binnington stopped 18 shots to help the St. Louis Blues beat the Winnipeg Jets 3-2 in Game 6 of their playoff series Saturday night to advance to the second round.

The Blues will next face the winner of the Dallas-Nashville series, which the Stars lead 3-2.

Bryan Little and Dustin Byfuglien scored for Winnipeg, which tried to rally after falling behind 3-0 early in the third period. Connor Hellebuyck finished with 33 saves.

The Blues became the first home team to win in the series, and advanced to the second round for the third time in four years.

Schwartz, who had only 11 goals in the regular season, has four in the playoffs - the Blues' last four, starting the tiebreaking tally with 15 seconds left in the 3-2 win in Game 5.

              STARS 5, PREDATORS 3

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) - Alexander Radulov and Jason Dickinson each scored twice to help Dallas to push Nashville to the brink of elimination.

The Stars came into the postseason as the West's first wild card and are up 3-2 in the best-of-seven series over the two-time defending Central Division champs. Dallas will have a chance Monday night at home in Game 6 to join Colorado and Columbus as the latest lower seed coming through in the opening round.

Tyler Seguin had a goal and an assist, and Jamie Benn had three assists as the Stars scored at least five goals in back-to-back playoff games for the ninth time in franchise history, and the first since Games 3 and 4 of the 1991 conference finals when this team was still in Minnesota.

Ben Bishop, named a finalist for the Vezina Trophy during the game, made 30 saves for the win.

Rocco Grimaldi, Ryan Johansen and Kyle Turris scored for Nashville, and Pekka Rinne finished with 21 saves. The Predators lost back-to-back playoff games for the first time since Games 5 and 6 of the 2017 Stanley Cup Final.

WASHINGTON (AP) So much went right for the Washington Capitals that the chants from the crowd changed by the shift.

Fans chanted for Nicklas Backstrom's four points, Braden Holtby's 30-save shutout, Devante Smith-Pelly's return to the NHL and T.J. Oshie's absence that is arguably the biggest obstacle to Washington going back-to-back.

Oh, and there were those chants, too as the defending Stanley Cup champions blew out the Carolina Hurricanes 6-0 in Game 5 on Saturday night to take a 3-2 series lead and move one victory away from advancing to the second round.

In their first game since Oshie was knocked out indefinitely with an upper-body injury, the Capitals got two goals from Backstrom, power-play goals from Alex Ovechkin and Tom Wilson and secondary scoring in the form of a goal by Brett Connolly and a successful penalty shot by Nic Dowd to make a statement that they were back after laying an egg in two road losses that evened the series.

''That was a pretty great response,'' Backstrom said after matching his 2018 playoff total with five goals through five games in this first round. ''We weren't satisfied with the games in Carolina. Tonight we played some Caps hockey, I thought. Everyone bought in to everything, we worked together and it paid off.''

Ovechkin assisted on Backstrom's second goal and Connolly's first of the playoffs to again lead the way in a postseason win. The reigning playoff MVP has three goals and four assists so far in the series and is hurting the Hurricanes with more than just his patented shot.

Backstrom, who is known more for his passing, had five goals in 20 games during the Capitals' Cup run a year ago that included missing four games with two fractures in his right pointer finger. He and Ovechkin were two of the best players on the ice Saturday with their team in a precarious spot.

''Obviously they got on the point sheet, but their play away from the puck, on the forecheck, supporting each other, they're real tough to play against when they play like that,'' said Holtby, who set a franchise record with his seventh playoff shutout. ''I thought they've been doing a great job all playoffs, too. You can tell that they want to win, and the rest of the team will follow.''

There were more leaders than followers in this rout, and that included penalty killers who salted away all five Carolina power plays. Three successful penalty kills in the second period of what was then a one-goal game helped the Capitals blow the game open.

''That was a game-changer for us,'' said Backstrom, who made it 2-0 just 19 seconds after the final penalty kill in that stretch expired. ''Kill `em off and then we got going after that. You need that in games like this.''

Hurricanes goaltender Petr Mrazek was hung out to dry in allowing six goals on 28 shots, and their power play came up empty when even a few scoring chances would've built some momentum and couldn't match Washington's high-powered unit.

''They scored a couple power-play goals, we stunk it up on ours,'' Carolina captain Justin Williams said.

As much of a complete effort as it was for the Capitals, it was that much of a missed opportunity for the upstart Hurricanes, who looked frazzled at times after dominating long stretches of the past two games. For the fifth time in five games, the team that scored first - and the home team - won, something the Hurricanes hope to continue back at home facing elimination.

''We've just got to make sure at home we get that first one and get our crowd into it,'' said defenseman Jaccob Slavin, who was on the ice for five Capitals goals. ''It's do or die now.''

After showing what they could do without Oshie and with Smith-Pelly back from a two-month stint in the minors for salary-cap reasons, the Capitals are another performance like this from facing former coach Barry Trotz and the New York Islanders in the second round. But before tackling that, they have to finish off the upstart Hurricanes, who have shown they can respond just as well despite being playoff newcomers.

''It's a win,'' Holbty said. ''We regroup, we know they're going to come harder next game and we'll focus on that.''

NOTES: Dowd's penalty shot goal was the first in franchise playoff history. ... The Capitals improved to 11-3 this season without Oshie. ... Carolina F Aleksi Saarela became the first player in Hurricanes/Hartford Whalers franchise history to make his Stanley Cup playoff debut before appearing in a regular-season game. Saarela replaced Jordan Martinook (lower-body injury) in the lineup. ... LW Andrei Svechnikov took part in the Hurricanes' morning skate and said he hopes to play in Game 6 after being concussed in a fight with Ovechkin in Game 3. ... F Micheal Ferland missed his second consecutive game with an upper-body injury.

              UP NEXT

The Hurricanes could set another arena attendance record Monday when they look to stave off elimination in Game 6.

                  Sunday’s List of 13: Wrapping up a sports Saturday……..

                  13) Twins-Orioles broadcast Saturday was great; Jim Kaat, Bert Blyleven were the analysts and it was educational. Play-by-play guy described the action on the field then got out of the way and let the two experts talk. Good stuff.

Kaat was saying how much harder batters work now before the game, and he referenced Aaron Judge going on the IL Saturday with an oblique strain. It is possible to overtrain.

                  12) Auburn’s Chuma Okeke tore his ACL during the NCAA tournament, but he is entering the NBA Draft anyway, not really sure why. You’d think he’d stay in school, use the school’s facilities to strenghten/rehab his knee, then go into the ’20 draft. We’ll see how this works out for him.

                  11) Advice from Bucky Brooks, former NFL player and scout:

“If you’re a HS football player who isn’t playing baseball in the Spring, you SHOULD run track for your school. Speed is such an important part of being a top-notch football player. Learning how to run and compete on the track carries over onto the field.. Dare to be great..”

                  10) Interesting trivia on this year’s NFL schedule:
                  — NFL’s Senior VP of broadcasting Howard Katz is one of the people who makes the NFL schedule every year.
                  — Philadelphia Eagles are only NFL team that plays three straight weeks on road this year.
                  — Katz and Eagles’ coach Doug Pedersen are next-door neighbors.

Part of the reason the Eagles are on road for three straight weeks in October is that the Phillies are expected to be World Series contenders, and the NFL didn’t want any conflicts between Eagle/Phillies games, seeing how they share parking areas.

                  9) Miami Marlins fired hitting coach Mike Pagliarulo after 20 games; it ain’t his fault Miami has a bad team. Marlins fired hitting coach Frank Menechino after last season; what they need to do is find an owner who is willing to spend money on ballplayers.

Two years ago, Miami’s outfield was Yelich-Ozuna-Stanton, then the team was sold and the new geniuses who are in charge traded the three of them for three piles of crap. No bueno.

                  8) Keldon Johnson scored 13.5 ppg this year as a freshman at Kentucky; he is projected by one draft guru to be picked 17th in June’s NBA Draft.

Johnson was seen in Hollywood this week driving a $300,000 McLaren 720S Spider; until watching a Showtime special a few weeks ago, I had no idea that there were cars that cost so much money. Wish the young man well in his NBA career, but someone might want to teach him money management skills before it is too late.

Last year’s NBA rookie salary scale paid the #17 pick a total of $6,358,500 for his first three years in the league. Taxes eat half of that, agent takes another 3%, so he’s down to $2,988,495 before he starts.

Donte DiVincenzo was the #17 pick LY; he played 15.2 mpg, scored 4.9 ppg, so he’s no lock for a second contract in the league when the time comes. The second contract is the key; thats where guys establish themselves in the NBA. Then they can buy the $300,000 car.

                  7) Baseball injuries:
                  — New York put Aaron Judge (oblique) on IL.
                  — Red Sox put P Nathan Eovaldi (elbow) on IL.
                  — Pirates put 2B Erik Gonzalez (clavicle), CF Starling Marte (abdomen) on IL.
                  — Phillies put SS Jean Segura (hamstring), P Victor Arano (elbow) on IL.

                  6) Former Georgia/Miami football coach Mark Richt will be an analyst on the new ACC Network starting this fall.

                  5) There is a high school football stadium in Jacksonville, TX called the Tomato Bowl.

                  4) On April 12, CG Technology took these two futures bets:
                  — Jaguars for $4,000 at 45-1, to win $180,000
                  — Titans for $2,000 at 85-1, to win $170,000

Long time to let the books hold your money; will odds change that much between now and before the preseason games start this summer?

                  3) Giants have apparently talked about trading for Arizona QB Josh Rosen, but don’t want to give up either one of their first round picks (6th, 17th picks) in this draft.

Rosen was the 2nd player taken in last year’s draft, so if you won’t give up a first round pick for him now, then you really don’t want him.

                  2) From Henry Schulman: Since 1912, the longest a team has gone to start a season without scoring a first-inning run is 28 games. Giants are at 22 games and counting thru Saturday.

                  1) 76ers 112 (-3.5), Nets 108— Philly hit two foul shots with 0:06 left to cover the spread; if you had Brooklyn +3.5, this was a bad beat. Embiid had 31 points, 16 rebounds for Philly.

                        • Bruins beat Leafs, force Game 7
                          April 21, 2019
                          ShareFacebookTwitterDiggMySpace

TORONTO (AP) Facing elimination, Boston didn't panic when it fell behind halfway through the first period. The Bruins kept their focus, quickly tied it and took the lead, and then held off the Toronto Maple Leafs to force a Game 7 in their first-round playoff series.

Brad Marchand had two goals and an assist as the Bruins beat the Maple Leafs 4-2 on Sunday.

''We just knew there was a lot of game left,'' Marchand said. ''We've come from behind a lot this year. We weren't fazed. We came together, played very hard after that. We played a really good game.''

Torey Krug and Jake DeBrusk also scored, and David Pastrnak had two assists to help Boston avoid elimination. Tuukka Rask stopped 22 shots.

''(We) gave ourselves another opportunity for another game,'' Marchand said. ''We got to try to replicate it. They're going to come hard. They've played really well so far in our building this series.''

Morgan Rielly and Auston Matthews scored for Toronto in a series neither team has managed back-to-back victories and each has won twice on the road. Frederik Andersen finished with 37 saves.

''It is what is now,'' Maple Leafs forward John Tavares said. ''We've still got a good chance to win this series. That's what our focus is on now. It's over with now. Obviously we'd love to get it done today. It's not the case.''

The Bruins will host the deciding game on Tuesday night.

The Maple Leafs, who lost to the Bruins in seven games in both 2013 and last spring, have not advanced to the second round of the playoffs since 2004.

''You try to forget the past, whether it's this series or last year's series,'' DeBrusk said, ''and understand they're going to come out with everything they've got and so are we.''

The winner of this series will take on the Columbus Blue Jackets, who got the Eastern Conference's last wild card and then swept a Tampa Bay Lightning team that tied an NHL record with 62 victories in the regular season.

Toronto, which took a 3-2 lead in the series thanks to a patient, stifling defensive performance Friday at Boston, is Canada's last hope of ending the country's 26-year Stanley Cup drought. The Calgary Flames and Winnipeg Jets were eliminated in their first-round series.

Toronto opened the scoring at 9:42 of the opening period on Rielly's first of the playoffs. Having hit the post on an early power play, the defenseman took a pass from William Nylander and fired a one-timer short-side along the ice after the Bruins failed to clear the defensive zone.

Boston tied it on a man advantage 1:41 later when Marchand snapped his third goal of the series on a shot off a scrambled draw that hit Leafs defenseman Ron Hainsey and beat Andersen between the legs.

''When the season's on the line you want to play hard, you want to leave it all out there,'' Marchand said. ''Sometimes it bounces your way, sometimes it doesn't. Luckily today it bounced our way.''

The Bruins' power play, which was held in check in Game 5, but was still 5 for 14 coming into this game, struck again with 2:58 left in the period. Krug got a rebound of Pastrnak's shot and fired a shot upstairs on Andersen for his first of the postseason.

Andersen did well to keep it a one-goal deficit late in the first by making two hockey-card caliber stops on both Patrice Bergeron and Grzelcyk.

Andersen was solid, but could do nothing on Boston's slick goal that made it 3-1. DeBrusk left the puck for David Krejci on a 2-on-2 rush before getting inside position on Maple Leafs forward Andreas Johnsson and making a diving stab at the return feed at 7:57.

The goal was the first of the playoffs for DeBrusk, who had six goals last spring - with five coming against Toronto, including two in Game 7.

''It's obviously nice to get the result we wanted and it was nice to contribute,'' DeBrusk said.

The Maple Leafs pulled within one early in the third as Matthews scored his fifth goal in the last four games as he took a pass from Jake Gardiner and rifled a shot far side on Rask at 4:15. Matthews was held without a point in the first two games of the series, and had just two points in Toronto's seven-game loss to Boston last spring.

Kasperi Kapanen cut in off the rush seven minutes into the third, but Rask closed the door on the speedy winger to preserve Boston's lead.

Andersen bailed out Rielly after a brutal turnover with under four minutes to go, robbing Pastrnak of a chance, but Marchand scored into an empty net with 1:54 left to seal the win and even the series.

''We've got a one-game series against these guys,'' Toronto coach Mike Babcock said, looking ahead to Tuesday. ''We've got a good group that enjoys being together and plans on having a good run. ... In order to do that, we've got to go into Boston and win a game.''

                          NOTES:
The 3 p.m. puck drop was something different for the Maple Leafs, who had just one afternoon game in the regular season. The Bruins played 12 day games.

                          • Hertl lifts Sharks past Vegas 2-1 in 20T to force Game 7
                            April 21, 2019
                            ShareFacebookTwitterDiggMySpace

LAS VEGAS (AP) Tomas Hertl scored a short-handed goal 11:17 into the second overtime to lift the San Jose Sharks to a 2-1 win over the Vegas Golden Knights on Sunday night, forcing a Game 7 in their first-round playoff series.

Just 31 seconds after Barclay Goodrow was called for slashing Brayden McNabb, it was Hertl recovering the loose puck and skating in alone and beating Marc-Andre Fleury with a wrist shot to seal the win and force the deciding game Tuesday at San Jose.

Logan Couture also scored for the Sharks, and Martin Jones had a playoff career-high 58 saves. San Jose has won two straight after being forced to the brink of elimination to even the series.

Jonathan Marchessault scored for Vegas, and Marc-Andre Fleury stopped 27 shots.

Jones may have saved his best performance for Game 6, coming up with big saves to keep the Sharks in the game with huge saves while under rapid fire.

With Vegas carrying momentum over from Marchessault's goal that tied the score with 8:40 left in the second period, and a penalty kill that carried into the third, Jones' biggest save came against Reilly Smith, whose point-blank one-timer was stymied. Moments later Jones snuffed out Mark Stone's slap shot from the circle.

The Sharks got on the board just before the end of the first period, when Vegas defenseman Deryk Engelland misplayed the puck in the neutral zone, and Couture gathered the puck, manuevered around Golden Knights defender Nate Schmidt and fired past Fleury glove side to give San Jose a 1-0 with 6.5 seconds left.

Marchessault tied it as he gathered a rebound off Shea Theodore's shot from the point, and lifted the puck over Jones' right pad with a swift backhand,. It gave Marchessault a goal in three consecutive games, and at least one point in four straight.

San Jose defenseman Brenden Dillon came up with a big play late in the game. Theodore caught Nosek in stride with long stretch pass, but Dillon did a good job of not taking a penalty while his swiping poke check kept Nosek from even making an attempt on Jones.

Both goalies came up with big saves during the first extra period, first with Fleury stopping Kevin Labanc just after the puck drop, and later when Jones stopped Max Pacioretty's one-timer with 9:57 left. But the biggest moment came with roughly three minutes left in the first overtime, when Fleury and Vegas defensemen Jon Merrill and Colin Miller combined to make several saves and keep the game going.

NOTES: Hertl's goal was the first short-handed winner in NHL history in a game that lasted more than one overtime. ... The game marked Vegas' second only Game 6 in its young history, as its only other appearance in a Game 6 was a 3-0 victory in San Jose during the Western Conference semifinals of the 2018 Stanley Cup Playoffs. ... The teams received a rare two-day break between Games 5 and 6 because the Jordan Brand Classic high school all-star basketball game was already booked for Saturday at T-Mobile Arena.

                                **********

Armadillo: Monday's List of 13: Wrapping up a sports weekend……

                                13) Philadelphia Eagles’ center Travis Kelce played LY with a broken foot, something he called a “torn elbow” (he wore a big brace), and a Grade 2 MCL tear.

Toronto pitcher Aaron Sanchez left Sunday’s game in Oakland with a broken right fingernail on the middle finger of his pitching hand.

                                12) Jim Kaat and Bert Blyleven discussed pitching all weekend on Twins’ TV; Kaat said Sunday he thinks the strike zone is much tighter now than when he pitched.

Blyleven mentioned that back when he pitched, umpires weren’t graded on each pitch by MLB and that has changed how the game is called.

                                11) Twins hit 11 home runs in their doubleheader sweep of the Orioles Saturday. Hard to believe Baltimore was in the playoffs only three years ago; their team is awful.

Baltimore’s AAA farm team is 7-10, their AA team is 3-13 and got shut out in both ends of a twin bill Saturday, so not sure where the Orioles’ help is going to come from.

                                10) Indianapolis Colts’ owner Jim Irsay recently spent $718,750 for the piano John Lennon used to write songs for Sergeant Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band.

                                9) They run a commercial on Colorado Rockies games for University of Colorado health services; it shows an older fellow who struggles to get out of his easy chair, then starts to work out- they show pics in his house of him running when he was much younger.

They show the man’s name; he survived heart failure, and as he recovers, his treadmill workouts get more rigorous, and the commercial ends with him finishing a 2-mile run in a local race.

The commercial is so well-done and very inspirational; the guy should get a sneaker contract from Nike or adidas, and they should run that commercial during the Super Bowl.

                                8) Christian Yelich is first player with 12+ homers in his team’s first 22 games since Alex Rodriguez in 2007.

                                7) Baseball injuries:
                                — Rays’ OF Austin Meadows (thumb) had an MRI.
                                — Blue Jays put P Matt Shoemaker (knee) on IL; he tore his ACL and is out for the season.

                                6) Merrill Kelly threw 109 pitches for Arizona Friday, but he didn’t finish the 4th inning. He got 18 called strikes, had 21 pitches fouled off, gave up six hits on 12 balls in play.

Funny thing, two of the three runs he gave up came on a harmless looking pop-up to short CF that the wind played games with and no one caught it.

                                5) Detroit Pistons have lost 13 consecutive playoff games, tied for longest-ever streak in NBA.

                                4) Seattle Mariners have already had five games with 4+ homers this year; all of last season, they had five games with 4+ home runs.

                                3) Former major league OF Matt Holliday is retired now and lives in Stillwater, OK; he recently had a house built in Stillwater. The guy who built the house is Philly catcher JT Realmuto’s uncle. Small world.

                                2) Good grief, the Utah Jazz uniforms are terrible. Like the old purple uniforms with the musical note on them that Pete Maravich wore for the Jazz back in the day.

                                1) A comedian was elected president of Ukraine; I was going to make a joke about this, but then remembered who the president is here. Having a comedian as president wouldn’t be so bad.
