    • Blue Jackets beat Lightning 3-1, lead playoff series 3-0
      April 14, 2019
      By The Associated Press

COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) The Columbus Blue Jackets extended their postseason mastery of the Tampa Bay Lightning, beating the NHL's best team 3-1 on Sunday night and moving to within a game of sweeping the playoff series.

Matt Duchene, Oliver Bjorkstrand and Cam Atkinson scored, and Sergei Bobrovsky fended off a desperate third-period charge to finish with 30 saves for the Blue Jackets, who took a 3-0 lead in the best-of-seven, first-round series. Columbus will try to win a playoff series for the first time in franchise history in Game 4 at home Tuesday night.

Without their top scorer, the suspended Nikita Kucherov, and injured defenseman Victor Hedman, the Lightning, who won a league-best 62 games in the regular season, couldn't find any momentum until late in the final period, and then Bobrovsky rose to the challenge. Ondrej Palat scored for Tampa Bay.

Columbus has commanded the series since they fell behind 3-0 in the opening period of Game 1, only to rally to win that one 4-3. They beat the Lightning 5-1 in Game 2, and solidly outplayed them for all but a few minutes on Sunday.

      GOLDEN KNIGHTS 6, SHARKS 3

LAS VEGAS (AP) - Mark Stone had three goals and two assists, and Vegas beat San Jose to take a 2-1 lead in its first-round playoff series.

Paul Stastny collected two goals and three assists as Vegas captured another high-scoring matchup with San Jose. Max Pacioretty had a goal and an assist, defenseman Shea Theodore had three assists and Marc-Andre Fleury made 25 saves.

The Golden Knights and Sharks scored 15 times while splitting the first two games in San Jose. Game 4 of the best-of-seven series is Tuesday night in Las Vegas.

Kevin Labanc, Logan Couture and Tim Meier scored for San Jose, and Martin Jones stopped 34 shots.

      JETS 6, BLUES 3

ST. LOUIS (AP) - Kyle Connor scored twice, Patrik Laine had a goal and an assist, and Winnipeg beat St. Louis to climb back into its playoff series.

Winnipeg dropped the first two games by one goal, but got back on track in St. Louis. Kevin Hayes, Brandon Tanev and Dustin Byfuglien also scored, and Connor Hellebuyck made 25 saves.

Game 4 of the best-of-seven series is Tuesday night in St. Louis.

David Perron, Vladimir Tarasenko and Alexander Steen scored for the Blues, and Jordan Binnington made 23 stops.

      ISLANDERS 4, PENGUINS 1

PITTSBURGH (AP) - Jordan Eberle scored for the third straight game, Robin Lehner stopped 25 shots and New York stunned Pittsburgh to take a 3-0 lead in its best-of-seven, first-round playoffs series.

Brock Nelson added his second goal of the playoffs, Leo Komarov scored the first postseason goal of his career and Anders Lee also scored for the Islanders, who have pushed the star-laden Penguins to the brink of elimination.

Garrett Wilson scored Pittsburgh's lone goal, a first-period deflection past Lehner that gave the Penguins just their second lead of the series.

Matt Murray finished with 32 saves for the Penguins, who need a win in Game 4 on Tuesday to avoid being swept for the first time since the 2013 Eastern Conference finals against Boston.

        • Monday’s 6-pack

          — Celtics 84, Pacers 74— Indiana scored 8 points in third quarter.

          — Blazers 104, Thunder 99— OKC was 5-33 behind the arc.

          — Rockies 4, Giants 0— Marquez had a no-hiiter into 8th inning.

          — Cardinals 9, Reds 5— NL Central rivals split pair of games in Mexico.

          — Astros 3, Mariners 2— Houston goes to Seattle and sweeps the Mariners.

          — Dodgers 7, Brewers 1— LA snaps its 6-game losing streak.

          Quote of the Day
“Just the way he gave the deadline. He’s been a tremendous player there for them, but to me, that gives just enough ammo for the fans out there to not really like that and enough for the Seahawks to maybe do what they’ve done, jettisoning some of their other players before they overpay.”
Former Raiders coach Jack del Rio

          Monday’s quiz
What two colleges did Russell Wilson play football for?

          Sunday’s quiz
Hubie Brown coached the Kentucky Colonels in the ABA.

          Saturday’s quiz
Luke Walton played his college basketball at Arizona.

          *****************************

          Monday’s List of 13: Wrapping up a sport weekend……

          13) I’m listening to Hubie Brown analyze the Spurs-Nuggets game Saturday, and he talks about when he coached games in Denver in the old ABA, when he coached the Kentucky Colonels, who were a really good team. He was talking about the high altitude in Denver.

Then it dawned on me; the ABA folded in 1976, WHEN I WAS IN HIGH SCHOOL.

Hubie is so awesome, so sharp, a pleasure to listen to. Absolutely no nonsense; he was coaching pro ball when I had a full head of curly hair, and thats a damn long time ago.

          12) The 1974-75 Kentucky Colonels were really good; they went 58-26, won the second-to-last ABA title, with a roster that included Artis Gilmore, Dan Issel, Louie Dampier, Will Jones, really good players.

Had the Colonels’ owner not sold out to the ABA’s other owners and folded the Colonels (he was later allowed to buy the Celtics as a reward for screwing the Kentucky fans), Hubie Brown would have had a hell of a ballclub to go into the NBA with.

Instead, the Nets, Pacers, Nuggets, Spurs joined the NBA for the 1976-77 season.

          11) One thing that disappointed me about Showtime’s 4-part Action series about sports betting is that they never showed the Westgate Theater on an NFL Sunday, which is my favorite place to be on any football Sunday. Just a perfect setup. Food to the left, betting in back, people are respectful of each other. I’ve had some excellent conversations in there with total strangers while watching football.

On a college football Saturday, the Westgate SuperBook is great fun. The SuperBook is a cool place to hang out and the SouthPoint is awesome for baseball/basketball nights, but for an NFL Sunday, a 1,500-seat theater with food/betting is pretty much ideal.

          10) Last episode of the Action series last night focused on the Super Bowl, which was a very sad few hours at Armadillo World HQ (I’ve been a Ram fan since 1966). This isn’t an episode I’ll watch more than once. Too soon.

          9) FOX should have a much better #1 baseball analyst than John Smoltz, who doesn’t seem to like baseball that much. Listen to him for a few innings and it is obvious he’d much rather be out on the golf course. He should work for the Golf Channel.

          8) Congrats to the person who wagered $85,000 on Eldrick Woods this week at 14-1 odds; his payday is $1.19M, about half of what Woods won at Augusta.

          7) Baseball injuries:
          — Seattle put P Wade LeBlanc (oblique) on the IL
          — Braves put P Aroyds Vizcaino (shoulder) on IL
          — Boston OF Andrew Benitendi left Sunday’s game after fouling a ball off his foot.

          6) First two days of NBA playoffs, favorites were 4-4 vs spread; under was 8-0.

          5) Coaching carousel:
          — Cincinnati hired Northern Kentucky’s John Brannen as its new coach.
          — Utah Valley hired Lakers’ assistant Mark Madsen as its new coach.
          — Wofford promoted associate coach Jay McAuley as head coach.

          4) James Harden won the NBA scoring title this season by 8.09 points/game, the biggest margin of victory since Wilt Chamberlain won it by 16+ points in 1962-63.

          3) It is April 15; Dallas Keuchel and Craig Kimbrel are still free agents. Weird.

          2) Former Clemson QB Kelly Bryant is playing at Missouri now; when Mizzou had its spring game this weekend, 7 or 8 of his Clemson teammates went to Columbia to watch Bryant play- thats something NFL scouts will take note of down the road. A quarterback being liked/respected by teammates is a big deal to NFL scouts.

          1) NFL schedule comes out this week; seems like last season just ended.

          • NHL Stanley Cup playoffs best bets and prop predictions: Cashing in on Capitals' quick starts
            Monty Andrews

Monday will see four first-round Stanley Cup series shift to the home arenas of the lower-seeded teams, and three of those clubs are in good shape after gaining a split of the first two games on hostile ice.

The Toronto Maple Leafs, Dallas Stars and Colorado Avalanche have home ice on their side – at least for the time being – while the Carolina Hurricanes will need to hold serve after dropping two road games in Washington.

Here are the top betting trends to monitor for Monday's Stanley Cup action:

BOSTON BRUINS AT TORONTO MAPLE LEAFS

            Moneyline Odds: Boston +100/Toronto -120
            Over/Under: 6 goals
Start Time: 7 p.m. ET, Scotiabank Arena, Toronto
            Series: Tied 1-1

The Maple Leafs will need to take advantage of home ice if they hope to get past the Bruins, and with this series becoming increasingly chippy in Game 2, it could very well come down to whichever team is more disciplined. And Toronto might have an advantage there, having accrued the fewest penalty minutes in the league during the regular season. The Bruins, by comparison, were the most penalized team in the NHL, finishing with 854 PIMs – more than 350 ahead of the rival Maple Leafs. That gives some value to Toronto as the short home fave.

            WASHINGTON CAPITALS AT CAROLINA HURRICANES

            Moneyline Odds: Washington +110/Carolina -130
            Over/Under: 6 goals
Start Time: 7 p.m. ET, PNC Arena, Raleigh
            Series: Washington 2-0

The Capitals and Hurricanes ranked in the top third in the league in goals against in the first period during the season but you can throw those results out the window in this series, with the teams combining for six goals in the opening frame. Five of those have come off the sticks of Washington players, which might not come as a surprise to those who know that the Capitals scored the fourth-most first-period goals during the season. Look for these teams to go O1.5 (-125) in the first period Monday.

            NASHVILLE PREDATORS AT DALLAS STARS

            Moneyline Odds: Nashville +100/Dallas -120
            Over/Under: 5 goals
Start Time: 9:30 p.m. ET, American Airlines Center, Dallas
            Series: Tied 1-1

This game actually opened with a total as low as 4.5 goals in some spots and with good reason. The teams have combined for just eight goals in splitting the first two games of their best-of-seven. And one has been the magic first-period number for these clubs, who have scored exactly one goal in the opening 20 minutes in five of their past seven meetings. Given how elite these teams are at preventing first-period goals, there's value in rolling with exactly one first-period tally Monday at +160.

            CALGARY FLAMES AT COLORADO AVALANCHE

            Moneyline Odds: Calgary -125/Colorado +105
            Over/Under: 6 goals
Start Time: 10 p.m. ET, Pepsi Center, Denver
            Series: Tied 1-1

When it comes to recent meetings between the Flames and Avalanche in Colorado, scoring first hasn't exactly been a recipe for success. The team scoring first has gone on to lose three of the previous four times these teams have faced off at Pepsi Center, including their last meeting in Colorado on Oct. 14, when the hosts led 2-0 after one period but fell 3-2 in overtime. Given this bizarre trend, taking the "No" on the team scoring first to win the game is a tempting play here at +170.

                • Hurricanes blank Caps 5-0 in 1st home playoff game since '09
                  April 15, 2019
                  By The Associated Press

RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) Rookie forward Warren Foegele had two goals and an assist, Petr Mrazek earned his fourth career postseason shutout and the Carolina Hurricanes won their first home playoff game in a decade, routing the Washington Capitals 5-0 on Monday night.

Dougie Hamilton also scored two goals, Brock McGinn had a late goal and an assist and Jaccob Slavin had two assists as the rapid-fire Hurricanes outshot Washington 45-18 to cut the defending Stanley Cup champions' lead to 2-1 in the best-of-seven series.

Playing with just 10 forwards after losing two to injuries in the first period, Carolina effectively rolled with three lines the rest of the way and fed off an amped-up crowd releasing 10 years of pent-up frustration with every hit.

Mrazek finished with 18 saves in his fifth career playoff victory - the last four have been shutouts.

Braden Holtby stopped 40 shots for Washington, which had its six-game postseason winning streak snapped. The Capitals were shut out in the playoffs for the first time since 2017.

The first postseason game in Raleigh since 2009 was a physical, borderline violent affair, headlined by Alex Ovechkin's first career playoff fight, one that sent Hurricanes rookie Andrei Svechnikov's head crashing onto the ice and knocked him out of the game.

                  MAPLE LEAFS 3, BRUINS 2

TORONTO (AP) - Auston Matthews scored his first goal of the playoffs and set up another as Toronto beat Boston to take a 2-1 lead in their Eastern Conference quarterfinal.

Andreas Johnsson, also with a goal and an assist, and Trevor Moore provided the rest of the offense for the Maple Leafs. Frederik Andersen made 34 saves.

David Krejci and Charlie Coyle scored for the Bruins. Tuukka Rask stopped 31 shots.

Less than an hour before puck drop, the Maple Leafs learned center Nazem Kadri had been suspended for the rest of the series for his vicious cross-check to the head of Bruins winger Jake DeBrusk in the third period of Game 2.

Game 4 is Wednesday night in Toronto.

                  AVALANCHE 6, FLAMES 2

DENVER (AP) - Nathan MacKinnon scored twice in the first period and set up newly signed rookie Cale Makar's first NHL goal in his debut as Colorado routed Calgary to take a 2-1 lead in their first-round playoff series.

Matt Nieto added a short-handed goal, and Mikko Rantanen and Erik Johnson also scored for the wild-card Avalanche, who built a 6-1 lead early in the third period and finished with 56 shots. Philipp Grubauer was credited with 27 saves.

MacKinnon had two power-play goals. But the goal of the night was turned in by Makar, the 20-year-old defenseman who was signed Sunday and jumped into Colorado's postseason lineup two days after his college season ended when Massachusetts lost in the Frozen Four championship game.

Makar, who grew up a Flames fan in Calgary, was the fourth overall draft pick by the Avalanche in 2017.

It didn't take long for him to make a big impact. He scored on his first NHL shot as his parents celebrated in the stands.

Sam Bennett and TJ Brodie scored for the Flames, the top seed in the Western Conference. Game 4 is Wednesday night in Denver.

                  PREDATORS 3, STARS 2

DALLAS (AP) - Mikael Granlund scored on a wrist shot from just inside the blue line with 8:19 left and Nashville, after blowing a two-goal lead, beat Dallas for a 2-1 lead in their Western Conference series.

Granlund, acquired in a trade with Minnesota in late February, got the puck from Dante Fabbro after Kyle Turris won a faceoff against Stars captain Jamie Benn.

Rocco Grimaldi scored in his second game in a row for the Predators, and Filip Forsberg had a perfectly timed play for a goal. Pekka Rinne made 40 saves.

Tyler Seguin and Mats Zuccarello scored for the Stars.

After three consecutive one-goal games, Game 4 is Wednesday night in Dallas.

Tuesday’s List of 13: Nobody asked me, but……

                      13) You never know about team chemistry, what goes on behind closed doors.

Last week, Marquette G Markus Howard announced he was coming back for his senior year, which was surprising, considering the kid had skipped his senior year of HS to begin college when he was 17 years old. But you figured it was very good news for Marquette.

Yesterday, brothers Sam/Joey Hauser announced they’re in the transfer portal, and will be leaving Marquette, which was really almost shocking news. As Darren MacGavin said in The Natural, “Something is amiss”

You don’t have to be Columbo to come to the conclusion that the Hauser brothers didn’t enjoy playing basketball with Markus Howard.

                      12) Fred Hoiberg is the new coach at Nebraska; in 2011, he quickly upgraded Iowa State’s program by bringing in transfers. Nebraska is the early favorite to land the Hauser brothers.

                      11) In his last two starts, hitters swung at 103 of Jacob deGrom’s pitches:
                      — 24 misses (23.3%)
                      — 52 foul balls (50.5%)
                      — 27 balls in play, with 13 of those hits (.481). Not good.

Last year and in his first two starts this year, hitters swung at 1,725 of deGrom’s pitches:
                      — 504 misses (29.2%),
                      — 645 foul balls (37.4%)
                      — 533 balls in play, with 188 of those hits (.353) Very good.

Something to track moving forward; he’s having trouble putting hitters away.

                      10) The gambler who won $1.19M betting on Eldrick Woods at The Masters? The guy is from Wisconsin; apparently it was the first-ever sports bet.

First sports bet he ever makes and its for $85,000? Wow.

                      9) Non-sports question: Why would someone pay $500,000 so their kid could get into a college? I don’t care if it is USC, Harvard, DeVry University or Ouachita Baptist; whats the point?

If the kid isn’t smart enough to get in the school in the first place, how will they do enough work to get a diploma? Or does the $500K cover that, too? Too many weasels in the world today.

                      8) Rockies 5, Padres 2— Colorado scored a run in 2nd inning for first time this season; they still haven’t scored in the first inning.

Under is 21-5-3 in Colorado’s last 29 road games.

                      7) Baseball injuries:
                      — Rockies put C Chris Iannetta (lat strain) on the IL.
                      — Phillies put P David Robertson (elbow) on the IL.
                      — Angels put P Tyler Skaggs (ankle) on the IL.
                      — Braves put P Jonny Venters (calf) on the IL.

                      6) Clippers 135, Warriors 131- Golden State blew a 31-point lead, may have lost DeMarcus Cousins with a torn quad muscle. Series is even, 1-1.

Sidebar to Clippers-Warriors series is that Doc Rivers’ daughter is engaged to Portland G Seth Curry, who is Steph Curry’s brother.

                      5) Brewers 10, Cardinals 7— In five games vs St Louis this season, Christian Yelich has seven homers, 15 RBI.

                      4) AA Arkansas Travelers didn’t get a hit Sunday, but they beat Tulsa 1-0 in 10 innings.

Starting this year in extra innings in minor league games, innings start with a runner on 2nd base, an incredibly stupid innovation; the run Arkansas scored came in on a bases loaded walk.

I’d rather see tie games than have innings start with a runner on second base.

                      3) Sacramento Kings fired coach Dave Joerger last week; turns out Joerger wanted the Kings to draft Luka Doncic instead of Marvin Bagley Jr. Maybe Joerger should be the Kings’ GM.

                      2) RIP to coach John MacLeod, who passed away over the weekend at age 81.

When I was in college, I wrote several letters to coaches around the country, asking how they used statistics (what is called analytics today) in their coaching. Thats how I put myself thru college, as a student manager of the basketball team— we did some interesting stuff with stats.

MacLeod was one of the few people who took the time to answer me, and I always appreciated that. RIP, sir.

                      1) They ran the Boston Marathon Monday; running 26 miles (and 365 yards) seems excessive to me. Hell, if I drive my car 26 miles I’m looking for a Wendy’s or a McDonald’s. But more power to the people who are way tougher than me. Hope you all had fun.

                      • Preview: Sharks (46-27) at Golden Knights (43-32)
                        Date: April 16, 2019 10:30 PM EDT

The San Jose Sharks have two glaring problems to fix if they hope to leave Las Vegas after Tuesday night's Game 4 of their first-round best-of-seven Stanley Cup playoff series with a crucial split of their two road games with the Vegas Golden Knights.

One is surviving the first minute of each period without surrendering a goal.

The other is somehow finding a way to slow down the Golden Knights' so-called "second line" of Mark Stone, Paul Stastny and Max Pacioretty.

Vegas, which takes a 2-1 series lead into Tuesday night's contest, became just the second team in NHL history to score an opening-minute goal in each period of a postseason game in Sunday's 6-3 win over the Sharks, joining the 1981 Boston Bruins, who did it against the Minnesota North Stars.

The Golden Knights scored 16 seconds into the game on a goal by Stone, the fastest playoff goal in the team's short history. Stastny opened the second period with a goal at the 21-second mark and Stone notched a score 36 seconds into the third period.

Cody Eakin also scored 58 seconds into Vegas' 5-3 win in Game 2 on Friday in San Jose while Stone had a power play goal at the 1:31 mark of the second period. So, the Golden Knights have scored a goal in the first 91 seconds in five of the last six periods.

"We've really stressed since Game 1 (that) we need to have good starts to periods and good starts to games," said Stone, who had the first hat trick in his career in Sunday's win. "It's so important. You want to make sure you're playing with a lead. It's a lot harder to come back, especially in the Stanley Cup playoffs."

The perspective is less sunny for San Jose.

"Thirty seconds into each period, we give up a goal," San Jose coach Peter DeBoer said. "You got your best players on the ice starting the period, that's on that group to make sure we are ready to not give that up. It's not like it's a mismatch of line changes. It's best against best and you've got to get it done."

                        Sharks forward Joe Pavelski agreed.

"We need to be better there, and it wasn't just the first, it was each period here tonight," Pavelski said. "We start to get our momentum and it's tough to keep it going or get it back when you do that stuff."

Stone and Stastny both had five points in Sunday night's victory while Pacioretty added a goal and an assist. That line has combined for 10 goals and 22 points in the first three games with Stone leading the way with six goals and two assists.

"They've beaten us up here this series so far," DeBoer admitted. "We haven't had an answer for them."

Added Pavelski: "They're feeling it right now so it's on us to kind of do our job to shut them down a little better."

San Jose, which lost defenseman Marc-Edouard Vlasic to an upper body injury in Game 2, also will be without forward Joe Thornton and could be without forward Micheal Haley for Tuesday's game.

DeBoer said Vlasic and Haley, who left Sunday's game after getting hit in the ankle while blocking a shot, are both day-to-day.

Thornton drew a one-game suspension from the NHL's Department of Player Safety for an illegal check to the head of Tomas Nosek in Sunday's loss.

                        • Preview: Lightning (62-16) at Blue Jackets (47-31)
                          Date: April 16, 2019 7:00 PM EDT

The Tampa Bay Lightning tied an NHL record with 62 regular-season victories.

They're going to need to match another mark to remain in the playoffs.

The 1942 Toronto Maple Leafs, 1975 New York Islanders, 2010 Philadelphia Flyers and 2014 Los Angeles Kings are the only NHL teams to overcome an 3-0 deficit in a seven-game playoff series.

The Lightning find themselves in that position following a 3-1 defeat Sunday night at the Columbus Blue Jackets, who will play host to Game 4 on Tuesday night. Teams that have been up 3-0 have gone on to post a 186-4 record when it comes to winning the series.

"We did a lot of good things, more than in Game 2 for sure," Lightning defenseman Ryan McDonagh told NHL.com after Sunday's loss. "We've got to stick with the formula there and hope a few more find the back (of the net)."

No team that won the Presidents' Trophy has ever been swept in the first round of the playoffs.

The Lightning played Game 3 without Nikita Kucherov, who led the league with 128 points in the regular season. Kucherov was suspended one game by the NHL Department of Player Safety for boarding Columbus defenseman Markus Nutivaara late in the third period of Game 2.

Tampa Bay's Victor Hedman, last year's Norris Trophy winner as the league's top defenseman, missed Sunday's game with an undisclosed injury and was considered doubtful for Tuesday, Lightning coach Jon Cooper said Monday. Hedman missed the final four games of the regular season with an upper-body injury.

Cooper also was unsure Monday about the status of defenseman Anton Stralman (lower body) and center Alex Killorn (undisclosed). Stralman has yet to appear in the playoffs but practiced Monday, when Killorn did not skate.

"(Kucherov) is a big part of our team," Cooper said. "The leading scorer in the league. He's definitely going to be an MVP finalist, so anytime you take someone like that out of the lineup, as well as Hedman ... I thought we battled."

The Lightning showed some signs of life in the third period Sunday, outshooting Columbus 17-8.

"We started to make some plays," Lightning forward Tyler Johnson told NHL.com. "Throughout the game and throughout the series, I thought we were keeping it too simple in a way. We have a lot of skill in this room, we need to use it."

Since taking a 3-0 lead in the first period of Game 1, the Lightning have been outscored 12-2.

The Blue Jackets are the only current NHL team never to win a Stanley Cup playoff series. They'll try to remedy that Tuesday at Nationwide Arena.

"These fans deserve us getting the job done here at home," Blue Jackets forward Matt Duchene, who scored the opening goal, told NHL.com. "It's been a long time coming for this team."

Oliver Bjorkstrand and Cam Atkinson also scored for Columbus, and goaltender Sergei Bobrovsky made 30 saves. Tampa Bay's lone goal was by Ondrej Palat; goalie Andrei Vasilevskiy made 27 saves.

"They threw the kitchen sink at us in the third period and (Bobrovsky) was big for us," Duchene said. "We did just enough to give up only one goal."

Blue Jackets coach John Tortorella cautioned the series isn't over.

"I'm happy about the way we've gone about our business," Tortorella said. "We have a lot of work to do. We've got to be really careful here."

                          • Preview: Islanders (48-27) at Penguins (44-26)
                            Date: April 16, 2019 7:30 PM EDT

The New York Islanders are in position to usher Pittsburgh out of the playoffs with barely a squeak from the Penguins.

The Islanders can complete a four-game sweep in their first-round playoff series with a win Tuesday night in Pittsburgh.

It that's a surprise -- Pittsburgh was widely picked to win the series despite finishing one spot and three points behind the Islanders in the Metropolitan Division -- it shouldn't be, argued New York goaltender Robin Lehner.

"We got 103 points in the standings," said Lehner, who has a 1.62 goals-against average and a .951 save percentage through three games. "The truth can't be a surprise. Everyone looks and compares players and all that stuff. I look at our roster and see a really good organization and great coaching and great defensemen and a lot of heart. No one should be surprised."

The Penguins have held a lead for just 3:17 in the series and have not scored consecutive goals.

"That's been the story line the last two games," said Jordan Eberle, who has three goals in three games for the Islanders. "They've scored, and we've come back. Playoffs are all about momentum."

They also are about strategy, and New York has found a successful one.

"There's not a lot of risk associated with the Islanders' game," Pittsburgh coach Mike Sullivan said. "They've got numbers back. They have a defense-first mentality. That's been their identity all year. That's what's brought them success."

Between the play of Lehner and a scheme orchestrated by coach Barry Trotz that puts the Islanders in spots to disrupt the Penguins at every turn, they have outscored Pittsburgh 11-5 and have forced mistakes and turnovers.

They have held Pittsburgh team captain and 100-point scorer Sidney Crosby, as well as his linemate and 40-goal scorer Jake Guentzel, without a point.

"The strategy is to stop everyone. There isn't any focus on one particular guy," Trotz said. "I think when you're on the ice against anybody in the league, you take care of your business. I think we've been doing that."

The Penguins are in backs-against-the-wall territory.

"Obviously, you don't want to be down 3-0," Pittsburgh winger Phil Kessel said. "It's not good now."

The Penguins have tried sitting Jack Johnson and Olli Maatta at different times with seven healthy defensemen available. They have juggled their line combinations. It hasn't made a difference in the outcomes.

So they are taking about the only approach available to them.

"We've got to focus on one game. We can't even it up in one game, but we can get ourselves back in it," said Crosby, who has piled up 66 goals, 185 points in 163 career playoff games while captaining Pittsburgh to three Stanley Cups, as recently as 2017.

"We've got to focus on winning Game 4. We haven't left ourselves a lot of room for error. All we can control is coming in with the right mindset for Game 4 and finding a way to get a win."

The last time Pittsburgh was down 3-0 in a series, the Boston Bruins finished off a sweep in the 2013 Eastern Conference finals. They did it in similar fashion -- a smothering style that stymied the Penguins' stars, and strong goaltending.

                            • Preview: Jets (47-30) at Blues (45-28)
                              Date: April 16, 2019 9:30 PM EDT

Have the Winnipeg Jets finally achieved liftoff? Or are they not quite ready for flight?

Despite a dominating performance in Sunday's 6-3 victory to pull themselves back into their first-round playoff series with the St. Louis Blues, the visiting Jets still have plenty to answer Tuesday in Game 4.

The Jets still trail 2-1 in the best-of-seven affair. Once considered a Stanley Cup contender, they have struggled for months, unable to string together victories or stay at the top of their game for extended stretches. Time will tell whether Sunday's effort means Winnipeg has finally turned that corner, or if it will take another step backward.

"We're building every shift, every game throughout the series," said Jets winger Kyle Connor, who scored two goals in the Game 3 win. "We're getting closer to our game, and it's pretty dangerous."

After the Blues took both games in Winnipeg to kick off the series, the Jets were in must-win territory. They delivered a strong start-to-finish performance, justifying their belief that they were just as good as their opponents in the first two games.

"It was good to get rewarded," Winnipeg captain Blake Wheeler said. "Obviously (a 3-0 series deficit) is a bad hole to get into. We stayed with the game plan, stayed with what we've done the whole series so far, and just got a little bit more rewarded."

Unquestionably, playoff wins and losses are more emotional, but the Blues have every right to feel confident. They are still up in the series, and Game 4 is on their turf -- even if all three games in the series have been won by the road team. Besides, counting their finish in the regular season, St. Louis has won 10 of its last 13 games.

"There's no panic in here," forward David Perron told the St. Louis Post-Dispatch. "We've just got to look at some video, talk about things (Monday). We'll be fine. It's one game. Whether you win 7-0 or you lose 1-0, it's worth one right now. Got to give them credit, they played a good game."

"We made a good push there for a little bit, but we just didn't start the way we wanted to," Blues captain Alex Pietrangelo added. "We knew they were going to come out (and) it just wasn't us from the start. We had some good pushes, but overall we need to do better."

Seeing as both teams finished the regular season with 99 points, it makes sense this would be a closely contested series. What makes the difference between moving onto the next round or a quick exit remains to be seen, but both teams are aware they must find another gear.

"I liked our first two games maybe more than I let on -- I just didn't want to sound like we were happy about losing hockey," Jets coach Paul Maurice said. "I didn't think we were that far off. We played well. This is going to be a good, tight and probably seven-game series."
