    • This week's NHL betting predictions and picks: Opposite trends collide in Preds-Sens game
      Monty Andrews

The Nashville Predators have gone 7-0 to the Under in their last seven games against Atlantic Division opponents but face an Ottawa side that has been the best Over play in the NHL.

Competing totals trends will go head-to-head in Ottawa on Monday, as the Nashville Predators look to continue their red-hot Under streak against the top Over play in the league. That game highlights a fun early-week schedule that includes the No. 1 team in the NHL looking to extend its hot streak in Vancouver, and two of this generation's greatest players resuming their rivalry in D.C. We cover these games and much more in our NHL betting cheat sheet with need-to-know betting notes, goalie profiles and injury news to help you crack the odds for the early-week action in the NHL.

      Total Opposites

After a brief dalliance with low-scoring games, the Ottawa Senators are back to their early-season form as they host the Nashville Predators on Monday night. The Senators have seen an average of 6.5 goals scored in their last two games after racking up three consecutive Unders. Ottawa remains the best Over play in the NHL to this point in the season, rocking a 22-9-3 O/U mark. The Predators are 15-17-1 O/U for the season but have been a solid situational Under play, having gone below the number in seven straight games vs. Atlantic Division opponents.

      Cat Scratch Fever

The Buffalo Sabres remain one of the most pleasant surprises of the season – but there's a tricky foe awaiting them this week as they host the Florida Panthers in a Tuesday night encounter. The Panthers come into this one having lost four consecutive road games but have dominated the Sabres in recent history, having won 20 of the past 26 meetings overall. That said, this is an entirely different Sabres team than in the past, one that enters Tuesday's showdown with wins in eight of its past 10 home games.

      TB's OK in B.C.

The Tampa Bay Lightning have been difficult to beat this season – but the Vancouver Canucks found a winning recipe back in October and will look to duplicate that success Tuesday at Rogers Arena. The Canucks used four third-period goals to steal a 4-1 win over the Lightning on Oct. 12, and will go for the sweep against a Lightning team that has won five of its previous six visits to British Columbia. It's worth noting that these teams have combined for three or more third-period goals in four straight meetings, so look at the Over on the third-period total as a strong option.

      Crosby vs. Ovechkin

Two of the greatest players of the 2000s will tangle Wednesday as Alex Ovechkin and the defending-champion Washington Capitals host Sidney Crosby and the Pittsburgh Penguins. You certainly couldn't go wrong taking either player to record a point in this one; Crosby has amassed 66 points in 47 career games against the Capitals, while Ovechkin – who leads the NHL with 29 goals – has 58 points, including 35 goals, in 54 games vs. Pittsburgh. Also worth mentioning: The winning team has scored seven or more goals in four of the last nine meetings.

Goalie Profile: Sergei Bobrovsky, Columbus Blue Jackets

The Blue Jackets have fallen back to the pack in the Metropolitan Division standings, and Bobrovsky is at least partly to blame. The normally dependable netminder has gone 2-3-1 with a 3.93 goals-against average in December – the second-highest mark among any player with at least five appearances. Bobrovsky is also sporting an .863 save percentage for the month, contributing to the Blue Jackets falling six points behind division-leading Washington. But despite the slump, the Blue Jackets are -145 favorites for Monday's game against visiting Vegas (+125).

      Injury Update

More bad news for the Chicago Blackhawks, who have lost Corey Crawford to another concussion. Crawford is expected to miss time after San Jose's Evander Kane shoved Chicago forward Dylan Strome into him during the first period of the Sharks' 7-3 triumph. Crawford had been out since just before Christmas 2017 with a concussion before returning to action in mid-October. He has struggled mightily on the ice, going 6-14-2 with a 3.28 goals-against average and a .902 save percentage. The Blackhawks are 7-2 O/U in his previous nine appearances.

      Hat Trick Trends

Things are looking up for the Capitals, who have fashioned a five-game winning streak coming into the week. Washington is now +1,200 to repeat as Stanley Cup champion, the sixth-best odds in the league.

The Over play has taken over as the dominant totals option yet again. After starting the season strong, the Over is making a major comeback, having cashed better than 65 percent of the time over the previous seven days.

Don't expect to see the Los Angeles Kings take a lead into the second period this week. The Kings have been ahead through the opening 20 minutes just three times in their first 34 games this season.

      • Henrique, Getzlaf help Ducks win again, beat Penguins 4-2
        December 17, 2018
        By The Associated Press

PITTSBURGH (AP) Adam Henrique and Ryan Getzlaf each had a goal and an assist, and the Anaheim Ducks rallied past the Pittsburgh Penguins 4-2 on Monday night.

The Ducks won for the ninth time in 10 games despite spotting the Penguins a two-goal lead. Henrique started the comeback with a power-play goal early in the second period and Getzlaf's empty net tally in the final minute pushed Anaheim to its sixth straight road win. Ondrej Kase and Kiefer Sherwood also scored for the Ducks.

John Gibson, a Pittsburgh native, stopped 28 shots, including the final 24 he faced to pick up the victory in his hometown.

Evgeni Malkin got his 11th goal of the season for Pittsburgh and Bryan Rust added his sixth but the Penguins couldn't cool off the Ducks. Casey DeSmith finished with 32 saves but lost for only the third time in his last 11 starts.

BLUE JACKETS 1, GOLDEN KNIGHTS 0

COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) - Nick Foligno scored 40 seconds into the third period, Sergei Bobrovsky made 28 saves and Columbus beat Vegas.

Foligno found the rebound after Seth Jones' shot and knocked it past goalie Malcolm Subban from the doorstep.

Bobrovsky got his 25th career shutout and first this season. He repelled a late attack by the Golden Knights after Subban was pulled for an extra skater with a minute left.

Subban performed well starting in place of Marc-Andre Fleury in the second game of a back-to-back. He made 30 saves.

        ISLANDERS 4, AVALANCHE 1

DENVER (AP) - Goaltender Thomas Greiss bottled up Colorado's fast-flying offense and Johnny Boychuk scored his first goal of the season for New York.

Jordan Eberle and Anders Lee also scored while Valtteri Filppula added an empty-netter as the Islanders began a four-game trip in fine fashion. Greiss made 30 saves and helped put an end to Mikko Rantanen's string of 14 straight games with at least a point. The streak was tied for the Avalanche's third-longest since the team moved to town in 1995-96.

Gabriel Landeskog scored Colorado's only goal.

Semyon Varlamov struggled yet again, allowing three goals on 20 shots. He's surrendered 21 over his last five appearances.

        SENATORS 4, PREDATORS 3, OT

OTTAWA, Ontario (AP) - Thomas Chabot scored 21 seconds into overtime and Ottawa recovered after blowing a three-goal lead.

Ottawa led 3-0 after the first period, but Roman Josi got two goals and Craig Smith also scored to tie it for Nashville.

Maxime Lajoie, Brady Tkachuk and Ryan Dzingel scored for the Senators, who handed Nashville its first loss against an Eastern Conference opponent. Craig Anderson stopped 31 shots.

Pekka Rinne started in net for Nashville but was pulled after allowing three goals on 11 shots. That ended his seven-game unbeaten streak against the Senators. Juuse Saros relieved and made 11 saves.

        BRUINS 4, CANADIENS 0

MONTREAL (AP) - Jaroslav Halak stopped 22 shots for his third shutout of the season and Boston beat Montreal.

Joakim Nordstrom, Colby Cave, David Krejci and Brad Marchand scored for the Bruins, who snapped a two-game skid. Boston was on the second game of a back-to-back after losing 4-2 in Buffalo on Sunday.

Halak improved to 5-0-0 when facing former teammate Carey Price, and helped the Bruins leapfrog the Canadiens for the first wild-card spot in the Eastern Conference.

Price, vying for his 300th career victory, finished with 31 saves as the Canadiens lost for just the second time in seven games.

Tuesday’s List of 13: Nobody asked me, but…….

                13) Before the NFL season started, a courageous gambler wagered $70,000 on the Cleveland Browns to go over 5.5 wins this season. Now that person can put his/her feet up and relax for the last two weeks of the season with a winning ticket in pocket.

Well done, but wonder how often a team has fired its coach during the season and still went over its win total for the season?

                12) My nomination for most underrated sports achievement of the last 20 years; Butler playing for the national title in college basketball two years in a row. Bulldogs are in the Big East now, but they were in the freakin’ Horizon League back then.

In seven years since Butler played for the national title, Horizon League teams are 0-7 in the NCAA tournament, 2-5 vs spread and they were the underdog in all seven games.

Brad Stevens coached Butler back then; now obviously, he is doing well in the NBA in Boston.

                11) From Rick Gosselin: The Bill Vinovich officiating crew has called the fewest penalties in the NFL this season. The Vinovich crew also has worked five Sunday night prime-time games. The NFL prefers its primetime games not to have a lot of penalties called.

                10) This is pretty cool: Drew Brees sent a customized game ball and a personalized letter to anybody that caught a pass from him or started on the offensive line during his career for their contributions to his all-time NFL passing yardage record.

                9) From The Athletic: Since 2014, Houston Texans are 30-1 when leading at halftime; Dallas is 32-11, the Browns are 10-12.

                8) Teams leading at halftime have won 76.3% of NFL playoff games since the league expanded to a 12-team playoff field in 1990.

                7) Notre Dame’s Rex Pflueger will miss the remainder of this basketball season with a torn ACL; very big loss for a young Fighting Irish team (#282 in experience) that is 7-3.

                6) Texas Tech is the only college basketball team in country that still hasn’t allowed more than a point per possession in a game this season; they play Duke Thursday night.

                5) Cincinnati Reds sent 61 employees to Las Vegas for the winter meetings; they have all kinds of meetings/trade shows at the winter meetings, from front office people to trainers to souvenir sales. Plus its a reward for lot of hard work during the season.

                4) If you’re in a dynasty league in fantasy baseball and you have Daniel Palka on your team, the Yonder Alonso trade is bad for you, because now Palka either plays LF or comes off the bench, with Jose Abreu/Alonso slotted to man the White Sox’ DH/first base spots.

                3) Jeurys Familia got $31M from the Mets for three years, and another $1M if he gets traded; is this a great country or what?

                2) Big money college sports claimed another casualty last weekend; the seven-year old Hy-Vee Classic, an annual doubleheader with Iowa’s four Division I hoop programs, is done after this week because the Big 14 is going to a 20-game conference schedule. God forbid Iowa play a non-conference team they could actually lose to.

Basically, Iowa is afraid of playing Drake and Northern Iowa every other year; imagine that?

                1) Saints 12, Panthers 9— Cam Newton threw an INT in end zone near end of first half, then Carolina fumbled after a long run in Saints territory. Panthers’ defense played their hearts out, but Newton looks terrible, not sure if he is injured or not. He throws like his arm hurts.

                        • Hart, Gordon win debuts; Flyers top Wings
                          December 18, 2018
                          By The Associated Press

PHILADELPHIA (AP) Carter Hart made 22 saves in his NHL debut and Shayne Gostisbehere and James van Riemsdyk each had a goal and an assist as the Philadelphia Flyers defeated the Detroit Red Wings 3-2 on Tuesday night and made interim coach Scott Gordon a winner in his first game.

Radko Gudas also scored for Philadelphia, which snapped a four-game losing streak.

The Flyers were playing their first game since head coach Dave Hakstol was fired on Monday, a more that capped a tumultuous few weeks. General manager Ron Hextall was fired last month and new GM Chuck Fletcher ended Hakstol's four-year tenure after a 1-4 road trip was punctuated by Saturday's 5-1 loss at Vancouver. The Flyers entered the game last in the Eastern Conference with 28 points.

Fletcher promoted Gordon from the Flyers' AHL Lehigh Valley affiliate.

Dennis Cholowski and Jacob de la Rose scored for Detroit, which has lost four in a row and five of six.

                          MAPLE LEAFS 7, DEVILS 2

NEWARK, N.J. (AP) - John Tavares, Auston Matthews and Patrick Marleau scored in the opening 13:38 to lead Toronto.

Nazem Kadri matched his career high with three assists and Mitch Marner and Morgan Rielly added second-period goals as Toronto embarrassed New Jersey for the second time this season and won for the seventh time in 11 games. Tyler Ennis scored two late goals.

Frederik Andersen made 27 saves in winning for the second time in his last five starts.

Sami Vatanen and Nico Hischier scored for the struggling Devils, who are 3-6-6 in their last 15 games. Keith Kinkaid gave up five goals on 21 shots before being lifted with New Jersey down 5-1 after 40 minutes.

                          PANTHERS 5, SABRES 2

BUFFALO, N.Y. (AP) - Evgenii Dadonov had two goals and an assist to pace Florida.

Troy Brouwer, Aleksander Barkov and Frank Vatrano also scored for the Panthers, who scored three goals in a span of 2:44 in the third period. Roberto Luongo made 30 saves.

Jeff Skinner and Rasmus Ristolainen scored for Buffalo, which lost to Florida for the seventh consecutive time. Carter Hutton made 30 saves.

                          RANGERS 3, DUCKS 1

NEW YORK (AP) - Kevin Hayes scored on a short-handed breakaway with 40 seconds remaining and New York rallied to beat Anaheim.

Vladislav Namestnikov had a goal and two assists, and Filip Chytil added an empty-netter in the Rangers' three-goal third period. Alexandar Georgiev, called up on Sunday after a stint in the minors, stopped 14 shots to help New York win for the second time in eight games (2-3-3).

Pontus Aberg scored on a deflection in the second period for the Ducks, who had won nine of their previous 10 games. Chad Johnson, claimed off waivers from St. Louis on Dec. 11, finished with 21 saves in his Anaheim debut.

Bishop was injured with 6:23 remaining in the second period when Garnet Hathaway skated into him behind the net. Khudobin closed out the period with three saves, and Bishop returned for the third, when he made 12 of his 21 stops. Hathaway was penalized for goaltender interference.

Jesse Puljujarvi scored for the Oilers, who had won six straight home games.

Maroon's goal came 2:19 into the final period. Officials declared the puck crossed the line during a goal-mouth scramble, even though initially no goal was called on the ice.

Cedric Paquette, Adam Erne, Steven Stamkos and Ondrej Palat also scored for the Lightning (26-7-2). Tampa Bay has not lost in regulation since Nov. 27.

                              Armadillo: Wednesday's List of 13: Mid-week musings……

                              13) Few weeks ago, I asked you, the reader, to submit your favorite Christmas songs; I figured four or five songs would get all the mentions. Not so much.

33 different songs got at least one vote, including a few I’ve never heard of, which is fine. Took a while for a few songs to jump to the head of the class.

                              12) First of all, a surprising number of people dislike Christmas songs, some intensely so.

Devin, a new mom who I figured would like Christmas: “Christmas music makes me want to slam my head into a door.” Alrighty then.

Diverse opinions are part of what makes our country fun; we all like different stuff.

                              11) Silent Night won our poll, not surprising. Traditional song, but it was close.

                              10) Baby Its Cold Outside finished 2nd; the Vanessa Williams version got a couple special mentions. I Saw Mommy Kissing Santa Claus also got a lot of support, as did The Little Drummer Boy.

You’re a Mean One, Mr Grinch was mentioned by people trying to ingratiate themselves with me, because they know of my fondness for the Grinch.

                              9) My personal favorite? All I want for Christmas Is You, the Mariah Carey version.

                              Elsewhere……..
                              8) Monday night, Christian McCaffrey became the first player with 50 yards rushing, receiving and passing in same game since Walter Payton in 1985.

                              7) Carolina Panthers coach Ron Rivera grew up on five different military bases in three different countries; his father was in the army.

                              6) If Georgia backup QB Justin Fields transfers as expected, that would mean over the last nine years, 10 of the 18 HS quarterbacks ranked #1-2 in their senior class wound up transferring in college, and one of those kids transferred twice!!

                              5) Spent five hours on an airplane Tuesday, five feet in front of a child who enjoyed yelling very loudly; great fun. Then an older woman passed out on the plane a few minutes before we landed here in Las Vegas- she was OK, just a little dehydrated apparently.

                              4) There were 108 international players on NBA rosters when this season started.

                              3) In The Natural, Wilford Brimley is the manager and he only seems to have one coach, but both of them are in the dugout when the Knights are batting; who coaches the bases?

                              2) Tommy Hawk, mascot of the NHL’s Chicago Blackhawks, was attacked by a man on the concourse of the United Center Friday nite. There was a short video of the incident on the Interweb; the mascot more than held his own and actually body slammed his assailant.

                              1) RIP Penny Marshall 75, a very funny lady who was Laverne in Laverne & Shirley and Myrna Turner in The Odd Couple. She also made movies, including Big and A League of Their Own. She was a big sports fan and had season tickets for the Lakers and Clippers- someone said on Twitter that she has a great sports memorabilia collection.
