            • Crosby helps Penguins beat Capitals 5-3
              March 12, 2019
              By The Associated Press

CALGARY, Alberta (AP) Johnny Gaudreau had three goals and three assists, and the Calgary Flames scored six times in the third period on their way to a 9-4 victory over the New Jersey Devils on Tuesday night.

Derek Ryan added two goals for Calgary. Sam Bennett, Elias Lindholm, Matthew Tkachuk and Sean Monahan also scored.

The Flames went ahead to stay on Gaudreau's penalty shot 1:01 into the third. Gaudreau finished off his hat trick at 12:01, converting a setup from Monahan.

It was the NHL's first six-point game since Dallas' Jamie Benn on Nov. 14, 2013, at Calgary. Gaudreau became the first Flames player to accomplish the feat since Al MacInnis on March 20, 1994.

Blake Coleman, Travis Zajac, Kyle Palmieri and Kenny Agostino scored for New Jersey, which is winless in its last seven (0-6-1).

              PENGUINS 5, CAPITALS 3

PITTSBURGH (AP) - Sidney Crosby scored twice during a furious second-period rally and Evgeni Malkin picked up two assists to reach 1,000 career points, leading Pittsburgh to the win.

Crosby picked up his 32nd and 33rd goals during a three-goal outburst over a span of 1:48 as Pittsburgh erased a two-goal deficit to take the lead on its way to snapping Washington's seven-game winning streak. Jake Guentzel started Pittsburgh's comeback with his team-leading 35th of the season. Phil Kessel and Jared McCann both added a goal and an assist for the Penguins, who have won six of eight.

Jakub Vrana scored twice for Washington, and defenseman John Carlson collected his 11th of the season. Alexander Ovechkin picked up an assist to become the 48th player in NHL history with 1,200 career points.

              CANADIENS 3, RED WINGS 1

MONTREAL (AP) - Carey Price made 20 saves and became the winningest goaltender in Canadiens history.

It was win No. 315 for Price, snapping a tie with Hall of Famer Jacques Plante atop the team leaderboard.

Max Domi had two goals and Brett Kulak also scored as the Canadiens (37-26-7) stopped a two-game slide. Tomas Tatar had two assists against his former team.

Andreas Athanasiou scored in the third period for Detroit (24-36-10), which has won just once in its past 12 games. Jonathan Bernier stopped 33 shots.

              BLUE JACKETS 7, BRUINS 4

COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) - Boone Jenner scored three times for his first career hat trick, powering Columbus to the win.

The Blue Jackets scored five unanswered goals to go up 5-1 before the Bruins came roaring back with three straight in a wild second period. Zach Werenski's first goal in 30 games provided Columbus some breathing room, and Jenner's empty-netter completed his hat trick with 47 seconds left.

Werenski and Josh Anderson each had a career-high four points on one goal and three assists. The Blue Jackets had lost four of six, but remain in contention for a wild card in the Eastern Conference.

Brad Marchand had two goals and an assist for Boston, and Patrice Bergeron finished with a goal and an assist. The Bruins stayed in second place behind Tampa Bay in the Atlantic Division.

              SHARKS 5, JETS 4

WINNIPEG, Manitoba (AP) - Joe Pavelski scored with 4.3 seconds left, lifting San Jose to the victory in a matchup of division leaders.

Gustav Nyquist had two goals for San Jose (43-19-8), giving him three in his six games since being traded to the Sharks in late February. Marc-Edouard Vlasic and Marcus Sorensen also scored.

Aaron Dell made 21 saves as San Jose remained undefeated in March with its sixth straight win.

Mathieu Perreault had a goal and an assist for Winnipeg (40-25-4), which dropped to 12-5-2 against the Pacific Division this season. Andrew Copp, Bryan Little, and Kyle Connor also scored, and Connor Hellebuyck stopped 31 shots.

              COYOTES 3, BLUES 1

ST. LOUIS (AP) - Richard Panik and Vinnie Hinostroza scored to help Arizona to the road win.

Darcy Kuemper made 39 saves just one night after he allowed four goals on 16 shots before he was pulled during the second period of Arizona's 7-1 loss in Chicago. He has won 10 of his last 12 starts to improve to 23-16-5 this season.

The Coyotes have won 12 of 16 to move one point ahead of Minnesota for the final Western Conference wild card.

Jaden Schwartz scored for St. Louis, and Jordan Binnington stopped 19 shots.

              STARS 2, SABRES 0

BUFFALO, N.Y. (AP) - Ben Bishop made 35 saves for his third straight shutout, leading Dallas to the victory.

Bishop extended his career-best shutout streak to 204 minutes, 20 seconds. It's the second-longest run for a Stars goaltender behind Ed Belfour's streak of 219 minutes, 26 seconds that ran from Nov. 17-24, 2000. He is the third goaltender in franchise history with three consecutive shutouts.

Rookie Roope Hintz scored twice for Dallas in the opener of a two-game trip. The Stars have won five of six and remain on top of the Western Conference wild-card standings with 77 points.

Buffalo played without captain Jack Eichel, who began serving a two-game suspension for an illegal check to the head of Colorado's Carl Soderberg.

Linus Ullmark stopped 25 shots for the Sabres, who have lost five in a row.

              DUCKS 3, PREDATORS 2

ANAHEIM, Calif. (AP) - Anaheim's Daniel Sprong scored for the third consecutive game.

Ryan Getzlaf and Jakob Silfverberg also scored for the Ducks, who have won four of their past six games. John Gibson made 32 saves.

Filip Forsberg scored two power-plays goal for the Predators, who have lost two straight and four of six overall. Pekka Rinne made 15 stops.

Nashville remains one point behind Winnipeg for first place in the Central Division. The Predators lead St. Louis by four points for second place.

                  Wednesday’s List of 13: Mid-week musings…….

                  13) Giants traded Odell Beckham Jr to Cleveland last night; I’m guessing Odell might not enjoy December by Lake Erie, but while the Ravens/Steelers lose players this month and the Bengals pretty much stand still. are the Browns a playoff contender now?

Giants got Jabril Peppers, plus draft picks in 1st and 3rd rounds.

                  12) Are there any other honest people left? Parents paying off people so their kids can go to fancy colleges. Oy. Just send the kid to a damn state college and tell him/her to study.

Jerome Allen is an assistant coach with the Celtics; he used to work at Penn, and admitted to taking $300K to designate a kid as a basketball recruit at Penn, so the kid could get into an Ivy League school.

The three smartest (whether book smart or street smart) people I know went to these colleges, and I’m posting the colleges in alphabetical order, not in order of how smart those people are:

                  Albany, Northeastern, St Francis NY

Not a lot of “elite” colleges on that list. Smart people come from all kinds of schools.

USC’s senior associate athletic director, Donna Heinel, apparently received more than $1.3M in bribe payments to fabricate athletic credentials for prospective students.

Tremendous. Just awesome. Ms Heinel has already been fired, by the way.

                  11) Monday at the MGM in Las Vegas, a courageous soul made a $310,000 money-line bet on the Raptors (-$420) to win in Cleveland; they lost by 25. Had Toronto won, the bettor would’ve banked a little over $73,800. Tough way to start the week.

                  10) At the Westgate SuperBook in Las Vegas, Detroit Lions dropped from 100-1 to 60-1 to win the Super Bowl, after their four free agent signings.

                  9) Teddy Bridgewater is taking less money to be the Saints’ backup QB, instead of being the starter with the Dolphins? What does that say about Miami?

                  8) Monday night in LA, Lou Williams of the Clippers set the NBA’s all-time record for most points scored off the bench, passing Dell Curry. Williams has scored 13,037 points in the NBA, but has started only 11.8% of his 923 career games.

Remember seeing Williams play in an AAU tournament in Orlando back when he was in high school; if I remember right, he played for the Atlanta Celtics’ AAU team- they were excellent.

                  7) Bradley’s path to winning the MVC tournament:
                  — beat Missouri State by 3; trailed by 7 early in 2nd half.
                  — beat Loyola, Chi by 2; trailed by 4 with 12:11 left.
                  — beat Northern Iowa by 3; trailed by 18 with 17:07 left.

                  6) Texas PG Kerwin Roach will play for the Longhorns in the Big 12 tournament this week, so whatever offense he committed to get suspended for the last five games is forgiven.

Ohio State’s Kaleb Wesson will also be back for the Big 14 tournament; he was suspended for the last three games.

Funny how conference tournaments make suspensions go away.

                  5) Five years ago, Mercer won the Atlantic Sun tourney, then beat Duke in the first round of the NCAA’s, before losing to Tennessee in the 2nd round. Mercer beat Duke as a 14-seed. In the last 20 years, #14-seeds are 8-72 in the first round of the NCAA tournament- Mercer’s win was a very big deal.

The next year, Mercer moved up to the Southern Conference and in five years since then, Bears went 83-83, 46-46 in conference games. Thats a .500 record in a better league, but Monday, they fired coach Bob Hoffman, the same guy who coached the team when they beat Duke.

Who made this decision? This isn’t UCLA or some other big-money school that expects to make the tournament every year to appease its big-money boosters. It is freakin’ Mercer. If you’re Mercer and the guy beats Duke, you give him a 10-year contract and pray he doesn’t bolt your school for green$r pa$ture$.

                  4) If you care about such things, you can wager on next year’s Super Bowl right now; AFC is favored by 2.5 points, with a total of 57.

                  3) Oakland Grizzlies basketball coach Greg Kampe played football in college at Bowling Green, graduating in 1978— one of his coaches was Don Nehlen, who went on to an excellent career coaching West Virginia. Kampe was a cornerback, who also kicked/punted.

                  2) Chris Woodward is the new manager of the Texas Rangers; he went on live TV for a half-inning with the Rangers’ TV guys during an exhibition game the other night and he was great. Best one of those interviews I’ve seen. He talked about how a lot of players don’t know all the rules, and how the bench coach for the Dodgers (Bob Geren) “….is obsessed with rules.” Was interesting to listen to.

                  1) A’s play Seattle over in Japan in games that count, starting at 5:30am here in New York on both March 20th and 21st; the NCAA tournament starts at noon on the 21st. When the hell am I supposed to sleep?

                  • Preview: Maple Leafs (42-22) at Blackhawks (30-30)
                    Date: March 13, 2019 7:00 PM EDT

The Chicago Blackhawks must treat every game with a sense of urgency, just to maintain their faint chances at a playoff spot.

They did that Monday with a 7-1 home victory over Arizona. And they will need to do it again Wednesday when they meet the Maple Leafs in Toronto.

"Right now, we just know that with the meaning of these points and these games, every game is going to be tough," Blackhawks captain Jonathan Toews said. "The playoffs have already started, if you ask me."

The Maple Leafs have a different problem. They are playoff bound and showed no urgency at all Monday night in their 6-2 home loss to the league-leading Tampa Bay Lightning.

"We were no good," Maple Leafs coach Mike Babcock said. "They were better than us from start to finish, won more battles, more races, and just had more jump. We looked like a lethargic group right from the get go. We didn't have any energy right through our whole group. Didn't skate well. Didn't execute well. Weren't good."

The Maple Leafs' second goal of the game came with five seconds left.

Brendan Perlini scored a hat trick for the Blackhawks against the Coyotes, who traded him to Chicago in November. He has scored six goals in the past five games.

The Blackhawks can be encouraged heading into the game Wednesday that they usually improve their play against the better teams in the league.

"You raise your level when you know if you don't play well you get embarrassed," Blackhawks coach Jeremy Colliton said. "It forces you to get motivation by fear. But I think we need to relish the challenge, relish the opportunity to play in big games."

Another positive for the Blackhawks is the return to form of goaltender Corey Crawford, who missed two months with a concussion. He made 26 saves in the 2-1 win over Dallas on Saturday after giving up 13 goals in his first three games back. He made 24 saves against Arizona.

"Happy for him," Colliton said. "He's so under control. Nothing bothers him. That's important for our team. Obviously, he's had a lot of success, and part of why he's so good is he's unflappable in there. He helps us."

As for the Maple Leafs, Babcock gave his team a day off from practice Tuesday to "get our energy level up."

"We were going to take an off day Thursday," Babcock said. "We just changed that and we'll take the off day (Tuesday) to get ourselves regrouped and back on track."

The Maple Leafs went 2-0-1 on a Western Canada trip that ended Saturday.

The Maple Leafs could meet the Lightning at some point in the playoffs.

"I think it was a good measuring stick for us," Maple Leafs center Auston Matthews said. "That's a veteran team. They obviously came out hungry. There's a reason that they're the best team in the league all year, so we just didn't come ready to play. Despite bad bounces they still beat us in every area of the ice."

The Maple Leafs were without Kasperi Kapanen on Monday. He was a late scratch because of an illness.

Toronto won the only meeting this season between the teams, 7-6 in overtime at Chicago Oct. 7.

                      **********

                      Armadillo: Wednesday's List of 13: Mid-week musings…….

                              • Blackhawks hold off Leafs, 5-4
                                March 13, 2019

TORONTO (AP) The improving Chicago Blackhawks are headed in the right direction, although their latest win was a wild ride.

Brendan Perlini had a goal and two assists, and the Blackhawks held off a furious Toronto comeback to beat the Maple Leafs 5-4 on Wednesday night.

Brandon Saad had a goal and an assist, and Duncan Keith, Dominik Kahun and Alex DeBrincat also scored as Chicago jumped out to a 5-0 lead before holding on. Dylan Strome added two assists for the Blackhawks, who have won four straight and crept within four points of the Arizona Coyotes for the second wild card in the Western Conference.

Chicago led 5-1 after two periods, but then gave up 29 shots in the third.

''We can be really happy with the first and second and be not happy with the third (period),'' Chicago coach Jeremy Colliton said.

Corey Crawford stopped 17 of 18 shots through two periods before leaving the game due to illness. Colin Delia had 26 saves during the onslaught in the third.

''We've got to learn from the third period because that was way too close,'' Chicago forward Marcus Kruger said. ''We didn't want that, we talked about it going into the third and still we didn't get the game that we wanted. But first and second (periods) I think we did some good stuff.''

Before their current win streak, the Blackhawks had lost four of five. However, the trend has been positive lately in a streaky campaign as they won for 15th time in 21 games.

''I just think as we go here, we're getting more comfortable with how we have to play to win,'' said Colliton, who replaced the fired Joel Quenneville on the Nov. 6 with Chicago 6-6-3.

Auston Matthews, Morgan Rielly and Andreas Johnsson each had a goal and an assist for Toronto, and John Tavares also scored. William Nylander and Mitch Marner each had two assists. Frederik Andersen gave up four goals on 14 shots in the first before he was replaced by Garret Sparks, who finished with 24 saves.

The Maple Leafs were coming off a 6-2 home loss to Tampa Bay on Monday after a three-game trip to western Canada, and followed it up with a sloppy, uninspired performance through two periods.

''We just weren't ready to play again, came out flat-footed,'' Matthews said. ''They're hungry, they're fighting for a playoff spot.''

Chicago dominated from the opening faceoff and went ahead 1-0 at 3:19 of the first period when Keith's shot that was deflected by Nylander, rattled around between Andersen's pads and slid over the goal line.

The Blackhawks went up by two with 7:05 left when Perlini cut into the middle and whipped a knuckling puck against the grain on Andersen for his 12th of the season and fifth in the last four games.

Tavares lost the puck at the offensive blue line, leading to a 2-on-1 break the other way that saw Patrick Kane feed Kahun for his 12th with 2:47 remaining.

Saad was left all alone in front to tuck his 23rd with 1:14 left in the period as four Toronto players were caught puck-watching.

''I think the first (period) was a great example of us being really smart - getting pucks back, causing turnovers, scoring off the rush, scoring in transition,'' Colliton said. ''We had some (offensive) zone time too where we were able to hold them down and create things with five guys in the zone. And we're doing it more and more consistently which is nice to see and it's got to continue.''

It marked the first time the Leafs have given up four goals in a period this season, and the first time it's happened in the opening 20 minutes of a home game since Dec. 23, 2008.

Andersen was replaced by Sparks to start the second, marking the first time in his career he's been pulled in consecutive games.

Chicago made it 5-0 with 7 1/2 minutes remaining in the middle period when DeBrincat roofed a shot past Sparks for his 38th.

Toronto finally got on the board with 1:33 left in the second when Rielly had his shot deflected in by Johnsson for his 20th.

Matthews pulled the Maple Leafs to 5-2 at 7:57 of the third with his 32nd. Rielly's shot on the power play got through traffic and beat Delia with just over 9 minutes remaining, and Tavares stuffed his career-high 39th with 1:31 left.

''We didn't put ourselves in a very good position,'' Rielly said. ''But I think you have to be happy with the way we battled back.''

NOTES: After being held out of the lineup Monday for precautionary reasons because of an illness, Toronto announced Kasperi Kapanen has been diagnosed with a concussion. ... The Maple Leafs were also minus Zach Hyman (flu), while defensemen Jake Gardiner (back) and Travis Dermott (shoulder) remain sidelined. ... Nylander's assist on Johnsson's goal was the 100th of his career. ... Chicago is 14-3-2 in its last 19 games against Toronto. ... Kane has 26 points (12 goals, 14 assists) in 17 career games against Toronto .
