  • Capitals beat struggling Avalanche 4-3 in overtime
    February 7, 2019
    By The Associated Press

WASHINGTON (AP) Evgeny Kuznetsov scored in overtime, backup Pheonix Copley made 34 saves and the Washington Capitals beat Colorado 4-3 on Thursday night to hand struggling Avalanche their fifth consecutive loss.

The Avalanche have lost 10 of their past 12 games and are the NHL's worst team since Dec. 7. Colorado is 5-15-4 in that time, going from tied for the most points in the Western Conference to out of a playoff position.

Semyon Varlamov stopped 38 shots, but gave up rebounds and loose pucks all night. Varlamov couldn't control power-play shots from former Capitals teammate and countryman Alex Ovechkin, allowing Kuznetsov to score his first goal on a tap-in and getting a break on an early whistle on what would have been a goal by Nicklas Backstrom. Kuznetsov beat Varlamov on a breakaway with 48 seconds left in overtime to end it.

In the third period, Matt Niskanen scored on a shot from the boards. Varlamov has the second-worst save percentage since Dec. 7 - ahead of only teammate Philipp Grubauer.

Andre Burakovsky also scored for Washington. The defending Stanley Cup champion Capitals have won two in a row after losing eight of their previous nine.

Nathan MacKinnon, Mikko Rantanen and Colin Wilson scored for Colorado, with Wilson tying it with 2:07 left.

      • Friday’s 6-pack

        — Washington State 91, Arizona State 70— There is no logical explanation for this score.

        — Cincinnati 69, Memphis 64— Bearcats trailed by 11 early in second half.

        — Iowa 77, Indiana 72— Hoosiers lost eight of their last nine games.

        — Wofford 78, East Tennessee State 76 OT— Terriers stay unbeaten in SoCon.

        — Western Kentucky 92, Rice 85, 2OT— Hilltoppers’ coach Rick Stansbury missed this game with back problems; he has bulging disk(s). Bad beat if you had the Owls, +5.

        — Wright State 76, Oakland 62— Grizzlies had covered nine in a row as a road underdog in Horizon League games.

        Quote of the Day
“I never experienced anything like that in my career. You’re shocked. You’re surprised, but you want kids to be happy and you want them to chase their dreams. I think every kid growing up wants to play at Carolina, Duke, Kansas, Villanova. That’s the reality of it.”
Albany Great Danes’ basketball coach Will Brown, who had his starting backcourt poached by big-time schools (Villanova, Florida State) last summer

        Friday’s quiz
Which NBA team drafted Kobe Bryant?

        Thursday’s quiz
Oklahoma City Thunder were the Seattle SuperSonics, before they moved to Oklahoma.

        Wednesday’s quiz
TV analyst Bill Raftery used to be basketball coach at Seton Hall.

        ***********************

Friday’s List of 13: Random stuff with weekend here…..

        13) Most guys in the NBA seem unhappy; they’re all getting paid a ton of money to play ball, but they don’t seem happy about it. It is a little sad. Hell, I’m almost 60 years old and I still shoot baskets now and then when the weather is nice.

Just once, ONCE, I want to hear the media quiz a player on trade speculation and have a guy say, “You know what, I make 20 million bleeping dollars a year. As long as the direct deposit in my bank works, I’ll play anywhere, because this sport is making me freakin’ rich!!!”

        The honesty would be refreshing.

        12) NBA trade deadline was Thursday; biggest news was probably Memphis trading Marc Gasol to the Raptors, as Eastern Conference teams jockey for position to make the NBA Finals, so they can lose to Golden State in five or six games.

Memphis did keep PG Mike Conley, which was a little surprising.

        11) From Ramona Shelburne of ESPN:

“Today’s Lakers-Clippers trade is the first between the teams since 1983! Norm Nixon, Eddie Jordan and a 1986 2nd-round pick that became Jeff Hornacek went from the Lakers to the Clippers for Byron Scott, Swen Nater and a pick (Bruce Dalrymple)”

        10) Star in the making on TV: former Ole Miss coach Andy Kennedy is very good doing SEC basketball games on the ESPN family of networks. He is low-key funny, honest, knows his stuff and is humble.

Several years ago, when I used to go to the AAU Nationals in Orlando for a couple weeks every summer and watch games for 10-12 hours a day, I spent an afternoon sitting near Kennedy and listened to him talk about ball for a few hours. He wasn’t funny that day, but he is smart and I learned some interesting stuff. Glad he is on TV now.

        9) Miami Marlins traded catcher JT Realmuto to Philadelphia for catcher Jorge Alfaro, pitching prospects Sixto Sanchez, Will Stewart, and an international bonus slot.

Realmuto is only 27, figures to be a big upgrade for the Phillies behind the plate.

        8) Feel bad for the people who sell preseason preview magazines for baseball; with 120+ guys still unsigned, and Realmuto getting traded Thursday, the preview magazines aren’t going to be as informative as they usually are.

        7) Major League Baseball will rename the disabled list the “injured list”; it has been called the disabled list since 1966. It is a cosmetic change for now; the rules of it remain the same.

        6) Oklahoma QB Kyler Murray will leave spring training with the A’s to attend the NFL Combine at the end of March; hopefully he’ll do really well and will give up his baseball dream and the A’s can save the $4.66M they unwisely promised him last summer.

        5) St Francis, PA gets a 5pm tipoff game on ESPNU, and the team known as the Red Flash wears………black uniforms. Go figure.

        4) Harrison Barnes was sitting on the Mavericks’ bench Wednesday night when he found out he had been traded to Sacramento, which had to be at least a little awkward.

Kind of like a few years ago when a Mets fan told Wilmer Flores he was getting traded while Flores was in the on-deck circle- when he went out in the field the next inning, he had tears on his face, he didn’t want to get traded, and it turns out, he didn’t get traded. The fan was wrong.

        3) Washington 67, Arizona 60— Wildcats lost four straight games in Pac-12 for first time in ten years; given all their off-court issues, Sean Miller’s job has to be in jeopardy.

        2) Now that the NBA trade deadline has passed, Anthony Davis will be back in the lineup for the New Orleans Pelicans. Pelicans will probably have to trade him this summer.

        1) RIP Frank Robinson 83, the great outfielder who is the only guy ever to win the MVP in both leagues, and was also the first African-American manager in the major leagues.

            • Hurricanes spoil Rangers' Cup celebration
              February 8, 2019
              ShareFacebookTwitterDiggMySpace

NEW YORK (AP) Petr Mrazek made 27 saves and the Carolina Hurricanes spoiled a celebration at Madison Square Garden that honored the last Rangers team to win the Stanley Cup, blanking New York 3-0 Friday night.

Warren Foegele scored the go-ahead goal early in the third period as the Hurricanes ended a 16-game losing streak at the Garden. He took a pass from Saku Maenalanen in the slot and wristed a shot past Henrik Lundqvist at 6:43. Rookie Andrei Svechnikov and Brock McGinn added empty-net goals as Carolina won its third in a row.

In a 45-minute pregame ceremony, Mark Messier, Brian Leetch and the players and coaches from the Rangers' 1994 Stanley Cup team were introduced. They were seated at center ice as a sellout crowd cheered the commemoration of the 25th anniversary of that championship.

To honor that club, Lundqvist wore a goaltender's mask similar to Mike Richter's with the Statue of Liberty prominently displayed on the front. Lundqvist's mask also has ''1994'' painted on the right side with a picture of Richter, his name and number.

''Unbelievable. It's a humbling thing. What a great statement by him,'' Richter said before the game.

''(He) didn't have to do it. It's very classy. I was shocked. ... Coming from him, look at the career the man has put together. He's been nothing but consistent from the day he arrived. He's had just a remarkable career, so it means a lot coming from him.''

Carolina, which is 13-4-1 in its past 18 games, climbed within a point of the Pittsburgh Penguins for the final playoff position in the Eastern Conference. These Rangers are near the bottom of the Eastern Conference.

After a tightly played opening period, both teams had better scoring chances in the second.

Kevin Hayes took a pass from Jimmy Vesey and faked Mrazek and attempted to stuff the puck into the net, but Hurricanes defenseman Jaccob Slavin swept it out from the crease.

Mrazek closed the second period by making a stellar stick-side save on Mika Zibanejad with the Rangers on the power play.

Lundqvist kept the game scoreless late in the opening period as he stopped Nino Niederreiter on a breakaway.

NOTES: For the national anthem, the Garden replayed John Amirante's version of ''The Star-Spangled Banner'' that he performed during the '94 Cup Final. ... Defenseman Haydn Fleury was scratched for Carolina. Center Brett Howden and defenseman Neal Pionk were scratched by the Rangers.

              UP NEXT:

Hurricanes: At the Devils on Sunday in the fourth game of a five-game road trip.

Rangers: Host Toronto on Sunday to close out a five-game homestand.

                  • Murray makes 50 saves, Penguins beat Flyers 4-1
                    February 11, 2019
                    By The Associated Press

PHILADELPHIA (AP) Matt Murray made 50 saves and Sidney Crosby had a goal and an assist to lead the Pittsburgh Penguins to a 4-1 victory over the Philadelphia Flyers on Monday night.

Jake Guentzel and Nick Bjugstad also scored and Kris Letang had an empty-netter for the Penguins, who snapped a four-game losing streak while winning for just the fourth time in the last 12. Pittsburgh entered holding the final wild-card spot in the Eastern Conference.

Jakub Voracek scored for Philadelphia, which lost for just the second time in 11 games. The Flyers could've pulled within four points of Pittsburgh with a victory, but now stand eight points behind the Penguins.

Flyers rookie goalie Carter Hart had his eight-game win streak halted, falling one game shy of setting an NHL record for consecutive victories prior to turning 21 years old. The 20-year-old also finished a game short of tying Pelle Lindbergh for the Flyers' rookie record for wins in a row. Hart had 24 saves.

                    CAPITALS 6, KINGS 4

WASHINGTON (AP) - Evgeny Kuznetsov had two goals and two assists to lead Washington over Los Angeles.

Alex Ovechkin scored his NHL-leading 38th goal and had two assists and Brett Connolly, Christian Djoos and Jakub Vrana scored for the Capitals, who won for the third time in four games.

Kings goalie Jonathan Quick allowed six goals on 31 shots behind some uneven defense. Austin Wagner scored twice and Tyler Toffoli and Oscar Fantenberg each had a goal for Los Angeles, which went 3-2-1 on its six-game trip.

                    SHARKS 7, CANUCKS 2

VANCOUVER, British Columbia (AP) - Evander Kane scored twice, leading San Jose past Vancouver.

The victory moves San Jose into first place in the Western Conference and extends the Sharks' winning streak to six games.

Timo Meier, Melker Karlsson, Tomas Hertl, Kevin Lebanc and Joe Pavelski also scored for the Sharks. Martin Jones had 25 saves.

Bo Horvat and Derrick Pouliot scored for Vancouver. Mike DiPietro stopped 17 of 24 shots in his NHL debut.

Six top minor league prospects of the Atlanta Braves:

                        1) Austin Riley, 3B— Josh Donaldson will keep Riley in AAA this season.

                        2) Ian Anderson, P— Went to HS 10-15 miles from Armadillo World HQ.

                        3) Mike Soroka, P— Was 2-1, 3.51 in five major league starts LY.

                        9) William Contreras, C— Younger brother of Cubs’ C Wilson Contreras.

                        14) Kolby Allard, P— 10 of Atlanta’s top 14 prospects are pitchers.

                        25) AJ Graffanino, SS— Son of former big leaguer Tony Graffanino.

Armadillo: Tuesday's List of 13: Nobody asked me, but……

                        13) Oklahoma QB Kyler Murray chose football over baseball Monday, ending speculation as to whether he would show up at Oakland’s training camp later this week.

Murray forfeits the vast majority of his $4.66M signing bonus from the A’s, but he’ll make a lot more than that when he gets picked in the first round of the NFL Draft. Read Monday that Murray winds up earning $210,000 from the A’s, for pretty much doing nothing.

The 58th overall pick in last year’s NFL draft got a contract worth $4.86M, so as long as Murray is picked higher than 58th (which he will be), he makes money on this deal.

Meanwhile, A’s had the 9th pick in the MLB draft LY and totally wasted it. No bueno. They do retain Murray’s baseball rights, but those are basically worthless now.

                        12) With Hall of Fame baseball player Frank Robinson passing away this past week, there were pictures of him posted on the Interweb; one of them was when he was managing the Nationals, in 2005 or 2006. He is leaning against the front rail of the dugout.

You look right behind the dugout and you can see the fans in the front row; one of the fans is Brett Kavanaugh, the Supreme Court judge who was under scrutiny last year for how much money he spent back then on tickets to Nationals’ games. Pretty sweet seats he had.

                        11) Cincinnati Bengals’ new offensive coordinator is Brian Callahan, whose father Bill coached the Oakland Raiders for a while; the Bengals’ new head coach is Zac Taylor, who played QB for Bill Callahan at Nebraska.

                        10) Weird stat: Duke hasn’t won or shared the ACC regular season title since 2010; they haven’t won it by themselves since 2006.

                        9) Tennessee is 22-1 and ranked #1 in country, even though none of their players were top 100 recruits nationally coming out of high school.

                        8) Indians’ SS Francisco Lindor has a right calf strain that will keep him sidelined from 7-9 weeks, which makes him doubtful to start the regular season.

                        7) From Tyler Bischoff:

UNLV’s basketball team has never had a defense finish outside the top 200 in kenpom.com‘s defensive efficiency rating. This goes back to 2002.

With seven games left this season, Rebels are ranked #238 in defensive efficiency, which helps explain their 12-11 record. Losing their best player Shakur Juiston for the season was a back-breaker.

                        6) Once you watch an AAF game on TV and you hear the replay official as he gives his verdict to the referee, it is obvious that the NFL has to do this next year, just to give transparency to the replay process. Makes the broadcast more interesting.

                        5) Three of eight AAF teams ran 70+ plays in Week 1; NFL teams rarely run 70 plays in a game, so it looks like the shorter play clock will result in more action during their games.

                        4) New Orleans Saints hired Darren Rizzi as special teams coordinator; he spent the last eight years as Miami’s special teams coach.

                        3) Los Angeles Rams hired Wes Phillips as their new TE’s coach; he worked with Sean McVay in Washington and is the son of Rams’ DC Wade Phillips.

                        2) When the Texas Longhorns were recruiting Patrick Mahomes, they recruited him as a DB, not a quarterback, which makes you question what the hell were they thinking about? How many QB’s in the NFL right now played at Texas?

                        1) It snowed in Las Vegas Sunday night; that doesn’t happen much. There was a video on Twitter of a guy driving around Las Vegas, with the traffic lights and street lights both out, but all the casinos were lit up like usual. Was a little eerie, though.

The latest batch of early-week NHL action is full of notable matchups, including the NHL's two top teams locking horns in the Sunshine State, and two of the league's biggest stars facing off in Pennsylvania. Here are the top games, betting trends and tips to monitor in the world of hockey.

                              Shark Attack

Don't look now, but the San Jose Sharks have emerged as a truly scary opponent in their quest to reach the Stanley Cup final for the first time in franchise history. San Jose has ripped off five consecutive wins – the last three coming on Canadian soil – going into Monday's encounter with a Canucks side that has lost four of six.

San Jose has won in 20 of its previous 28 visits to British Columbia, and has surrendered just eight goals over its last four games. The past two wins have been identical 5-2 San Jose victories, and given the team's success in Vancouver, rolling with the puck-line bet (+165) isn't a bad play.

                              Lucky Number Seven?

You don't see many O/Us of 7 in NHL play, but Tuesday's matchup between the Calgary Flames and Tampa Bay Lightning at Amalie Arena might just get there. The teams rank first and second in goals per game in the league, with the Lightning at an incredible 3.8 goals per contest and the Flames close behind at 3.67.

Both teams are riding red-hot Over streaks coming into this one, with Calgary an incredible 14-2 O/U in its previous 16 games overall and Tampa Bay 5-2-1 O/U in its past eight against the Pacific Division. The teams have also cashed the Over in four of their previous five meetings.

                              Power Outage

The Toronto Maple Leafs and Colorado Avalanche are loaded with star power – so why would any logical bettor even consider the Under in this one? It comes down to the power-plays – and neither team is faring all that well with the man advantage as they lock horns Tuesday night at Pepsi Center.

The Avalanche are still looking for their first power-play goal of the unofficial second half of the season, having gone 0-for-14 since the All-Star break. The Maple Leafs have gone 1-for-18 since the break; they were 0-for-4 in Sunday's 4-1 loss to the New York Rangers despite finishing with 23 power-play shots on goal.

                              Connor vs. Sid

Get your player props ready – Wednesday's encounter between the Edmonton Oilers and the host Pittsburgh Penguins could be a bit of a barn-burner. The teams exploded for 11 total goals in a narrow Penguins victory in their first meeting of the season Oct. 24, reversing a trend that had seen the teams score five or fewer total goals in five of their previous six encounters.

Oilers star Connor McDavid is a prime candidate for a player prop pick, having recorded three goals and six assists in five career games against Pittsburgh. Penguins counterpart Sidney Crosby is also in play, with 18 points in 15 career outings vs. the Oilers.
Goalie Profile: Alexandar Georgiev, New York Rangers

This is still Henrik Lundqvist's team – but Gregoriev has made a signifcant case for more time in the crease. Gregoriev is coming off a ridiculous 55-save performance in a weekend victory over the Maple Leafs, and has surrendered just five total goals over his previous three appearances. The trick for the 23-year-old Russian netminder: duplicating his Madison Square Garden success on the road, where he has gone a dismal 3-7-0 with a 4.11 goals-against average and an .882 save percentage. The Rangers are +170 underdogs for Tuesday's showdown with the host Winnipeg Jets.

                              Hat Trick Trends

Jake Brenk's name might not be familiar to most hockey fans, but he's notable within the betting community. Brenk has been the least-friendly official to home teams of any regular referee this season, with the home side going 16-36 ATS in his assignments for a total of -18.54 units. Home teams are averaging 2.87 goals in his games, compared to a 3.29 average by the road team.

As for which referee has been part of the most offensively entertaining games this season, one man stands above the rest. Ghislain Hebert has seen an average of 6.79 goals scored in his assignments so far, the highest average of any official with at least 30 games under his belt. His contests carry a 34-26 O/U record, good for +6.55 units on the over play.

The battle for best "break-even" team has become a two-horse race between the Rangers and Arizona Coyotes. The Broadway Blueshirts have generated a total of +0.2 units through their first 55 games, with 0.61 units won at home and 0.41 units lost on the road. The Coyotes are at -0.13 units for the year, having lost 6.7 units at home and won 6.57 away from Arizona.
