      Armadillo: Wednesday's six-pack

Six more interesting college football games this weekend:

      — Duke @ Georgia Tech (-3)

      — Ole Miss (-6.5) @ Arkansas

      — Florida @ Vanderbilt (-7)

      — Iowa (-5) @ Indiana

      — Oklahoma State (-7) @ Kansas State

      — Georgia (-7) @ LSU

      **********

      Armadillo: Wednesday's List of 13: Mid-week musings…….

      13) Walking around Fremont Street Tuesday, you could pay to pose for a pic with a guy who looked exactly like Pee Wee Herman; hell, for all I know, it might’ve actually been Pee Wee Herman, but no, I passed on that opportunity.

      12) Alabama QB Tua Tagovailoa hasn’t played a snap in the fourth quarter this season, thats how easily the Crimson Tide have won their games so far this season.

      11) Kansas City Chiefs are 5-0 for the 4th time in their history; the other three years (’03, ’13, ’17) they were 5-0, they didn’t win any playoff games.

      10) There have been 49 two-point conversion tries thru five weeks this season, the most 2-point tries thru five weeks in NFL history.

      9) Drew Brees’ uncle is Marty Akins, who was QB for the Texas Longhorns for two years back when the great Earl Campbell was running the football for Texas. In other words, Uncle Marty handed off a lot.

      8) NFL moved Week 7’s Bengals-Chiefs game to Sunday night, replacing Rams-49ers.

      7) Boston 4, New York 3— Red Sox-Astros will play in ALCS, starting Saturday; Dodgers-Brewers will play in NLCS, starting Friday.

      6) Umpire Angel Hernandez had a tough couple nights; he had three calls overturned by replay in first four innings at first base Monday, then he had the plate Tuesday. Lot of former players on Twitter took their shots at Hernandez; I’ll take their word for it.

Hernandez was only second ump this season to have three calls overturned in a game; other guy did it in a 16-inning Rays-Marlins game back on July 3.

      5) Only two position players have pitched in a playoff game:
      — Cliff Pennington, Game 4 of 2015 ALCS for Toronto
      — Austin Romine, Game 4, of 2018 ALDS for New York.

      4) Only six college basketball teams have made the last eight NCAA tournaments:
Cincinnati, Duke, Gonzaga, Kansas, Michigan State, North Carolina

      3) In the arena where the NHL’s Dallas Stars play, the ad on the boards in front of the visitors’ penalty box is for Bud Light’s “Pit of Misery”

      2) Last two weeks, Jacksonville Jaguars gained 503-502 yards, which is pretty good; problem is, they were also -6 in turnovers in those games, which is why they split the two games.

      1) Buffalo Bills’ passing yards the last two weeks: 87-79 yards. No bueno.

Sharks best positioned to withstand big early season injury
            October 10, 2018
            By The Associated Press

Doug Wilson didn't go looking for Joe Thornton insurance last summer. The general manager of the San Jose Sharks already had it.

The Sharks didn't panic when they found out their longtime star had another setback with a series of nagging right knee injuries. They knew what they could count on from captain Joe Pavelski and the rest of the supporting cast.

''We're very fortunate we have a lot of players that can go up and down in the lineup,'' Wilson said. ''Our players just look at it as they just move up a role or slip into a different position, and it's not really that much of an adjustment for them because they've done it before.''

All over the NHL, teams are adjusting on the fly to a surprising number of significant injuries early in the season, including a handful of starting goaltenders.

The Kings are calling Jonathan Quick week-to-week with a lower-body injury. The Panthers will be without Roberto Luongo for two to four weeks because of a sprained ligament in his right knee, and the Penguins don't know when Matt Murray will be back after being diagnosed with yet another concussion.

The Flyers have ruled out high-priced forward James van Riemsdyk for the next five to six weeks, and the Blue Jackets are without top defenseman Seth Jones and center Brandon Dubinsky .

The Sharks in particular seem best prepared to withstand the loss of Thornton because of organizational depth in the form of summer addition Antti Suomela and ready-made NHL forwards like Rourke Chartier, Marcus Sorensen and Dylan Gambrell.

The Sharks hope doctors caught the infection in Thornton's knee early enough that he won't be out too long. Still, Wilson expected to use 28 or 29 players this season and credits the versatility of players on the roster and coaching of Peter DeBoer for having San Jose ready for this scenario.

''When you lose a difference-maker, no team can just plug and play to replace a difference-maker. But then you become the sum of all your parts,'' Wilson said. ''A lot of our guys are not kids. ... When people say they're new or younger, they're actually mature players. And most importantly our coaches and our players trust them, and that's half the battle.''

No GM can go into an offseason making moves on the uncertain scenario that a star will go down. But previous experiences paved the way for Los Angeles, Columbus and Florida to have a plan in place.

Quick missed four months two seasons ago, and Luongo sat out two months with a groin injury last year. Florida has backup James Reimer signed long term as an option already, and Los Angeles traded for former top prospect Jack Campbell and brought back veteran Peter Budaj as depth.

''We've experienced it here two years in a row,'' Kings GM Rob Blake said. ''We lost Quickie for four or five months and Jeff Carter the same last year. (Coach John Stevens') message is the same: the next guy up, someone's going to come in and fill that spot. Will he be at the level of Jonathan Quick? Will he be at the level of Jeff Carter or (Anze) Kopitar? Probably not. But they are adequate players, and the rest around have to be better, too.''

The Penguins for now are counting on young goalies Casey DeSmith and Tristan Jarry to shoulder the load without Murray. Knowing them from his time in Pittsburgh, Vegas netminder Marc-Andre Fleury said: ''They're both very talented goalies. ... I'm sure they'll be fine.''

Often, it's not about one player filling a void. Columbus GM Jarmo Kekalainen doesn't expect one defenseman to replace Jones or one center to step right into Dubinsky's role.

''If somebody comes from being the seventh, eighth defenseman to thinking he's going to play 27 minutes to replace Seth Jones with all his strengths, probably either he shouldn't be the seventh defenseman or he's got unrealistic expectations,'' Kekalainen said. ''Everybody who's coming into the lineup from outside of the lineup should have their eyes wide open with the opportunity in front of them, but also realizing what their own strengths are and what their role on the team is and how they can be successful.''

That's the case in Philadelphia, where Jordan Weal gets the first crack at filling in for van Riemsdyk after being a healthy scratch the first two games of the season. Like the Sharks, the Flyers believe they have flexibility among their forwards.

''We have a lot of players that are versatile in terms of being able to play the middle or play the wing,'' coach Dave Hakstol said. ''In the short term, that'll challenge us and challenge our depth and challenge somebody else to step in and do a good job.''

            VEGAS ADVERSITY

After losing just two of their first 10 games last season as an expansion team, the Golden Knights have already lost twice in their first three games. For a Vegas team that didn't face much adversity in a charmed inaugural season that included a trip to the Stanley Cup Final, it's a chance for coach Gerard Gallant to emphasize some fundamentals with a tough road schedule early.

''I thought we played loose and were not concentrating enough and were making mental mistakes,'' Gallant said. ''So, it's just about getting focused and getting ready to play every game.''

            GAME OF THE WEEK

The defending Stanley Cup champion Washington Capitals host a 2019 favorite in the Toronto Maple Leafs on Saturday night.

            LEADERS (THROUGH MONDAY)

Goals: Auston Matthews (Toronto), 5; Assists: Brad Marchand (Boston), 7; Points: Matthews (8); Ice time: Drew Doughty (Los Angeles), 28:44; Wins: John Gibson (Anaheim), 3; Goals-against average: Ben Bishop (Dallas), 0.50; Save percentage: Bishop, .984.

Bob the Builder: Panthers' coach putting his stamp on things
              October 10, 2018
              By The Associated Press

SUNRISE, Fla. (AP) Bob Boughner's favorite dinner spot used to be a sports pub in the minor-league hockey hotbed of Glens Falls, New York called Dango's, a place where the chicken wings were huge and most of the televisions were usually tuned to hockey.

These days, it's an upscale steakhouse called Mastro's.

If there's one constant of Boughner's life in hockey, it's that just about everything - from refining a palate, to reaching the NHL, to transforming a hockey team - takes time. And Boughner got a very tough reminder of that last season when the Florida Panthers missed the postseason by a single point in his inaugural year as their coach.

So here the Panthers go again, trying to become a playoff club. But with Boughner leading the charge, there's real belief that good things are coming.

''He's even more than advertised,'' Panthers president Matthew Caldwell said. ''His diligence, he's a player's coach but also very, very technical. He gets into the weeds and I think the players trust him, but he'll hold them accountable too. His ability to be there for the players but also correct them, not be too friendly with them, have strong standards, that's been excellent.''

Boughner won the job in Florida by selling Caldwell and the rest of the Panthers' leadership on a vision.

              His message: Be patient.

Boughner played 297 games in three different minor leagues, needing seven years to make the jump from NHL draftee to NHL player. Once he got to the top level, he never left, spending parts of 10 seasons with six franchises and being part of five deep runs in the Stanley Cup playoffs. He was a hard-nosed defenseman, someone whose pro-career-best of eight goals came during those Dango's-fueled days with the AHL's Adirondack Red Wings in 1993-94.

His coaching climb took time as well, going from an owner-coach-president of OHL team in his hometown of Windsor, Ontario to some NHL assistant stints and finally getting the head job in Florida in 2017.

''It wasn't an easy road. It was a hard road,'' Boughner said. ''I earned it as a player and I had to work every day to stay there. And it was not like I had a secure spot every year, too. But I always worked hard to be a team guy and that's what has sort of turned into some of my coaching philosophy. I had to build it from the ground up. I miss playing every day, but coaching, there's something gratifying when it all comes together.''

He feels that gratification coming in Florida.

The Panthers, who open their home schedule on Thursday against Columbus, won three playoff series in their third season of existence - 1995-96. They've won zero series since, missing the playoffs entirely in 17 of the 21 seasons that followed their lone run to the Stanley Cup final. Boughner spent two seasons as part of the Panthers organization as a player, though he never made the NHL club.

Panthers general manager Dale Tallon knew it would take time for Boughner's system to take root. Florida was 25-8-2 in its last 35 games last season, going from near the bottom of the Eastern Conference to just missing the postseason.

''I just like his whole attitude about everything,'' Tallon said. ''He's a straightforward, no-nonsense guy. His technical aspect is terrific. And he gets the player. He has good relationships with all the players.''

Boughner looks back at last season with the obvious tinge of disappointment.

But he also knows the growing pains were vital.

Much of the core from last season remains the core now, and those players know what makes Boughner tick - and what makes his system work. There's a culture in place now, a level of expectation, a level of accountability.

It's what Boughner demanded from himself as a player, and it's his blueprint for what he wants as a coach.

''There's no more excuses,'' Boughner said. ''There's a point last year, maybe 10 or 15 games in, when we were on a trip and I couldn't wait to get off our plane and get to the hotel and tell the guys get into the meeting room. I sort of blew up, got a lot of things off my chest, and the guys sort started taking inventory of themselves. I think we've turned a corner now. I think we're ready now.''

Voracek, Laughton net 2 each in Flyers win
                  October 10, 2018

OTTAWA, Ontario (AP) Jakub Voracek rebounded quickly from an embarrassing loss.

Voracek had two goals and three assists and Scott Laughton also scored twice in Philadelphia's 7-4 victory over the Ottawa Senators in Wednesday, a night after an 8-2 loss to San Jose in the Flyers' home opener.

''It was a tough start at home for us, but we scored seven and I think we played a pretty good hockey game,'' Voracek said. ''We just have to take it to the home ice now.''

Sean Couturier, Robert Hagg and Claude Giroux also scored, and Calvin Pickard stopped 31 shots.

Brady Tkachuk scored his first NHL goal and finished with two goals and an assist for Ottawa.

''(My mother's) birthday is (Thursday), so it's a nice little pre-gift for her because as of right now I don't have a gift for her yet,'' said Tkachuk, the No. 4 pick in the June draft. ''Maybe try to send flowers overnight, but it's kind of my gift for her.''

Maxime Lajoie also had two goals and an assist for the Senators, who were playing the first of a five-game homestand.

Craig Anderson made 38 saves, but the Flyers victimized him with four goals through two periods before they pulled away in the third.

Philadelphia took the lead for good with 4:15 remaining in the second period when Thomas Chabot missed an opportunity to clear the puck down low and Laughton beat Anderson off a backhand.

The game took a nasty edge in the second that continued in the third.

Playing his second career game, the 19-year-old Tkachuk endeared himself to fans with his scoring touch, but also showed his propensity to mix things up when he took a double minor for roughing early in the final frame.

The Flyers didn't score on the ensuing power play, but Hagg picked up his second of the season shortly thereafter.

Giroux scored his first goal of the season late in the period on a power play to make it 6-3.

Tkachuk, making his home debut with the Senators, got his first goal when he redirected a shot by Chris Tierney off his skate on the power play midway through the first period. He became the fastest Tkachuk to score in the NHL. It took his father Keith five games, and brother Matthew, who plays for Calgary, scored in his fourth outing.

The Flyers tied it on the power play as Voracek, at the side of the net, redirected Shayne Gostisbehere's one-timer.

Tkachuk picked up his second of the night early in the second period as he carried the puck in and beat Pickard shortside, but less than two minutes later Couturier grabbed a rebound and backhanded it past Anderson to tie it 2-2.

The Flyers took the lead on Voracek's second of the night as he showed great patience before beating Anderson through the five-hole. The Senators managed to tie it when Lajoie fired a rebound past Pickard.

                  NOTES

Ottawa C Paul Carey and D Ben Harpur were healthy scratches.

Kuznetsov's 4-point night helps Capitals beat Golden Knights
                  October 10, 2018

WASHINGTON (AP) Evgeny Kuznetsov is dancing with the puck and celebrating when it's in the net just like last June.

Kuznetsov continued his wizardry against the Vegas Golden Knights on Wednesday night, scoring a goal and assisting on three more as part of a 5-2 Washington Capitals victory in a rematch of last season's Stanley Cup Final.

Kuznetsov assisted on two goals by Alex Ovechkin and one by Nicklas Backstrom and scored his own on the power play. The leading scorer in the Cup Final with eight points in five games, Kuznetsov has seven points through the defending champions' first three games of the regular season.

''If you play with the good players, you're always gonna get points,'' Kuznetsov said after one of the best all-around games of his career. ''It's just about have fun every night you go out there. If you don't have fun and you don't want to enjoy, you don't want to play hockey, you should be retired. But you can see we always have fun.''

The Capitals are having plenty of fun right now with the franchise's Stanley Cup banner in the rafters and almost the same team back. Perhaps most importantly, they still have Kuznetsov and Ovechkin, whose sublime chemistry from the playoffs was again on display against the Golden Knights.

''He knows when to pass, he knows when to shoot,'' said Ovechkin, who has four goals in three games. ''Sometimes he try to make crazy pass. You think, `What's he doing?' But he have his own mind. ... You just have to be ready at any second.''

The 610th and 611th goals of Ovechkin's career put him in sole possession of 17th on the NHL's career list, passing Bobby Hull. Kuznetsov pointed out that Ovechkin passes someone every 10 games or so and joked, ''That's a free meal for me.''

Braden Holtby, who made ''the save'' with his stick in Game 2 of the Final, stopped 29 of 31 shots and bailed out his teammates during an especially sloppy second period. Holtby allowed goals to Cody Eakin in the second period and Reilly Smith in the third.

''We've played against them enough to know that they're going to come at some point,'' Holtby said. ''It's a matter of keeping your cool and not getting frustrated. You need a couple big plays, be it blocks or saves or guys getting the puck out.''

Vegas goaltender Marc-Andre Fleury, who wanted to start this game instead of facing his former team in Pittsburgh on Thursday night, allowed four goals on 28 shots.

''I think just a few mistakes here there, including myself and guys in our defensive zone maybe,'' Fleury said. ''But if we clean that up, we'll be in good shape.''

His teammates hit the post a handful of times and went 0 for 3 on the power play and are 0 for 11 so far this season. The Golden Knights fell to 1-3-0 at the beginning of their second season a year after starting 8-2-0.

''It's a long year and we have to figure out things quick,'' Vegas defenseman Shea Theodore said. ''We definitely have to work some things out and find our game.''

Notes: T.J. Oshie sealed the Capitals' victory with an empty-net goal with 1:55 remaining, sparking chants of ''back-to-back.'' ... Washington D Brooks Orpik returned early in the second period after taking a big hit from William Carrier and landing awkwardly in the first. ... Vegas C Paul Stastny will miss at least the next two games with a lower-body injury. Coach Gerard Gallant said Stastny will be re-evaluated when the team returns home over the weekend after this road trip. ... Washington D Michal Kempny made his season debut after missing the first two games with a suspected concussion. ... F Dmitrij Jaskin made his Capitals debut after they claimed him off waivers from St. Louis.

Coyotes beat Ducks in shootout for 1st win
                  October 10, 2018

ANAHEIM, Calif. (AP) Nick Cousins and company took a deep breath.

The first goal is on the board. The first win is in the books.

Cousins scored in the shootout, Antti Raanta made 23 saves and the Arizona Coyotes beat the Anaheim Ducks 3-2 on Wednesday night for their first win.

Dylan Strome and Brad Richardson scored for Arizona (1-2), which dropped its first 11 games last season.

''It's huge. Because of what happened last year it is a big relief,'' Cousins said. ''I think it relieves some pressure.''

The Coyotes got their first goal this season when Strome converted a power-play opportunity with 2 1/2 minutes left in the first. They were the last NHL team to score.

''I just looked and there was a lot of relief. We didn't want to go another period without scoring a goal,'' Strome said.

Coach Rick Tocchet also looked relieved that he didn't have to answer any more questions about when his team was going to get its first victory.

''We are going to enjoy the win,'' he said. ''We have some work to do, but there was a lot of chances on both teams tonight, especially early on.''

Anaheim was trying for the first 4-0 start in franchise history. Ryan Kesler and Ben Street scored for the Ducks (3-0-1), and John Gibson made 37 saves.

''We didn't manage the puck properly in some areas,'' coach Randy Carlyle said. ''We had people on the wrong side of it in some of the battles.''

Kesler returned to the lineup after missing the first three games. The center had hip surgery in June 2017 and played in only 44 games last season.

Kesler centered the third line and scored on his third shift 5:52 into the first period. He battled for the puck in front of the Arizona goal before firing it past Raanta to give Anaheim a 1-0 lead.

''To be able to score that goal that early on in the game definitely feels really good,'' Kesler said. ''Everything I went through for the past year and a half, it hasn't been fun. I had fun out there tonight.''

Street's goal at 14:39 of the second period was his first in the NHL. At 31 years and 240 days, he is the oldest player to score his first NHL goal with Anaheim in the 25-year history of the franchise.

NOTES: The Ducks have allowed only six goals in their first four games, which is the lowest total in franchise history. ... Anaheim's Andrew Cogliano has an assist in two straight games. ... It was Arizona's longest goal drought to open a season, more than doubling the 67:11 mark at the start of the 1996-97 season. ... Two of the six goals Anaheim has allowed this season were short-handed. The Ducks and Flyers are the only teams to have allowed two so far this season. ... Arizona's Derek Stepan played in his 600th NHL game. He is the ninth player from the 2008 draft class and first non-first round pick to reach that milestone.

Coyotes: Return home to face Buffalo on Saturday before embarking on a four-game road trip.

Thursday’s List of 13: Nobody asked me, but…….

                      13) Weird season for the Cleveland Indians, who won a weak AL Central by 13 games; Twins finished second, but at 78-84, so Indians coasted into the playoffs with a lame bullpen that blew many games the season. When Cleveland got swept by the Astros, I was wondering if there are Indian fans who even think their team had that good a season?

                      12) Watching Jose Altuve hit a double in the gap in left-center Monday, no way is he 100%; there is something wrong with his knee. Normally he would’ve rounded second and threatened to try for a triple- he labored just to get to second base.

                      11) Why do playoff games have six umpires, with extra umps in outfield on each foul line? With instant replay, they just aren’t needed. They probably weren’t needed before replay.

                      10) Los Angeles Rams scored 173 points in their first five games; nine years ago, the Rams went 1-15 and scored 175 points all season.

                      9) There are 11 unbeaten teams left in college football; Cincinnati is ranked #25, lowest of those 11 unbeatens.

                      8) There are 27 players who won five NBA championship rings; 13 of those 27 guys also won a sixth championship ring.

                      7) Los Angeles Dodgers’ GM Farhan Zaidi is an MIT graduate with a doctorate in economics; when he was a kid, his father moved their family from Canada to the Philippines. Zaidi found a copy of Bill James’ Baseball Abstract in a bookstore on a military base, and from reading that book he studied his way into becoming a major league GM. Pretty cool.

                      6) When the Giants/Dodgers moved to California in 1958, the Dodgers won three World Series in their first eight years in LA, but they also finished under .500 four times in their first 11 seasons there. Dodgers haven’t won a World Series since 1988.

Meanwhile, the Giants had winning seasons their first 14 years in the Bay Area, but never won a World Series in SF until 2010, when they won three in five years.

                      5) 76ers star Joel Embiid signed a multi-year endorsement contract with Under Armour, making him highest-paid big man on a shoe deal. Embiid had been with Adidas.

                      Lot of money in sneakers.

                      4) Kansas Jayhawks lost their last three games, so they fired offensive coordinator Doug Meacham this week; HC David Beaty will take over his duties. Kansas has a bye this week; they play Texas Tech next.

                      3) Tweet of the Day, from Nick Friedell, who covers the NBA for ESPN.com:

“Rajon Rondo remains one of the most unique personalities in the NBA. He just helped workers at T-Mobile Arena roll some beer kegs down the hallway before walking back into the Lakers locker room.”

                      2) Final Four baseball teams: Brewers-Dodgers-Astros-Red Sox

Only one guy ever played for all four teams; utility man Mark Loretta.

                      1) RIP to coach Tex Winter, one of the greatest basketball minds ever, who passed away this week at age 96. Winter is probably best known as one of Phil Jackson’s lieutenants in the NBA, but he also won 453 games as a college head coach. RIP, sir.

Vegas scored the first goal, and Kessel had the next three - with the final two coming on second-period breakaways. It was Kessel's sixth career hat trick and first in four seasons with Pittsburgh. His last hat trick came Feb. 1, 2014, with Toronto.

Jake Guentzel scored his third goal and Evgeni Malkin had three assists.

Casey DeSmith stopped 35 shots in his first regular-season start for Pittsburgh. Starter Matt Murray is day-to-day with a concussion sustained Monday during practice.

Reilly Smith scored his second of the season for Vegas and 100th career goal. Tomas Nosek also scored for Vegas, which lost its third straight and has opened the season with four losses in five games.
