Rielly's OT goal gives Maple Leafs 7-6 win over Blackhawks
    October 7, 2018
    By The Associated Press

CHICAGO (AP) Morgan Rielly scored 19 seconds into overtime, John Tavares had three goals and the Toronto Maple Leafs spoiled Chicago's home opener with a wild 7-6 victory over the Blackhawks on Sunday night.

Auston Matthews added two goals and two assists for Toronto in the opener of a four-game trip. Rielly also had two assists and Kasperi Kapanen finished with a goal and an assist.

Garret Sparks made 25 saves to get the win in his first NHL game since 2016.

Patrick Kane scored twice in the final two minutes of regulation, and defensemen Duncan Keith and rookie Henri Jokiharju each had three assists.

Jonathan Toews, Alex DeBrincat, John Hayden and Brandon Manning also scored for Chicago, which opened the season with two overtime wins on the road. Cam Ward finished with 27 stops.

    HURRICANES 8, RANGERS 5

RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) - Warren Foegele had two goals and an assist, Andrei Svechnikov got his first career goal to snap a tie midway through the third period, and Carolina rallied to beat New York.

Svechnikov, the No. 2 overall pick in June's draft, deflected Justin Faulk's shot in front of the net with 9:16 remaining to break a 5-5 tie and give the Hurricanes their first lead. Foegele followed with his second goal 47 seconds later and Teuvo Teravainen added an empty-netter to secure Carolina's first home win under new coach Rod Brind'Amour.

Jordan Martinook, Jordan Staal, Micheal Ferland and Lucas Wallmark also scored for the Hurricanes.

Jimmy Vesey and Chris Kreider each scored twice and Pavel Buchnevich added a goal for New York, which remains winless in three games under new coach David Quinn.

Petr Mrazek made 19 saves for the Hurricanes and Alexandar Georgiev had 32 for the Rangers in a wild offensive game.

    KINGS 4, RED WINGS 2

LOS ANGELES (AP) - Alex Iafallo scored two goals and Ilya Kovalchuk had his first two NHL assists in nearly 5 + years, leading Los Angeles to its first victory of the season.

Captain Anze Kopitar and Paul LaDue also scored for the Kings.

Anthony Mantha and Dylan Larkin scored for the Red Wings, and rookie defenseman Dennis Cholowski had two assists.

Kovalchuk's first point with the Kings also was his 400th career assist when he set up Kopitar's goal in the second period. The Russian star then pounced on a puck in the corner during the third period and made a beautiful pass to Iafallo for the Kings' third goal.

          Armadillo: Monday's six-pack

Top 6 picks in Week 5 of Westgate SuperBook NFL handicapping contest (3,123 entries)

          1) Ravens, -3 (1,014)- L

          2) Rams -7 (873)- L

          3) Titans -3.5 (811)- L

          4) Cardinals +4 (759)- W

          5) Redskins +6.5 (757)

          6) Broncos +1 (712)- L

          Season record: 13-14-2

          **********

Armadillo: Monday's List of 13: Wrapping up an NFL Sunday……

Browns 12, Ravens 9 OT— Cleveland is 2-2-1, with all five games decided by 4 or fewer points; Browns have 15 takeaways, are +7 in turnovers. There was only one TD in this game; Browns missed PAT after that one. Ravens are now 6-10-1 in last 17 games as road favorites; they’re 3-0 when scoring 26+ points, 0-2 when they don’t. Under is 4-1 in Cleveland games

Lions 31, Packers 23— Brutal day for Green Bay K Crosby, who missed four FGs and a PAT; in first half, Packers had ball five times- three missed FG’s, two fumbles. Green Bay outgained Lions 521-264, but Detroit had huge 25-yard edge in field position. Lions covered their last four games; four of their five games went over. Detroit was perfect (28 pts/4 trips) in red zzone.

Panthers 33, Giants 31— Graham Gano kicked a 63-yard FG at the gun and Carolina recovered a muffed punt in end zone for a TD as they improved to 3-1. What were odds that Odell Beckham would throw a TD pass before he caught one this year? He did both in this game. Giants scored 31 points without converting on 3rd down (0-7); they had three turnovers (-1).

Chiefs 30, Jaguars 14— Jacksonville threw 61 passes, ran ball 17 times; I’m sure Tom Coughlin loved that. Jaguars had ball in red zone five times, scored only one TD— four empty trips to red zone in one game!!! Chiefs covered nine of last 11 as a home favorite; they had five takeaways (+3), two more than they had in first four games combined. Chiefs play Patriots next week.

Bengals 27, Dolphins 17— Miami led 17-3 after third quarter; Cincy scored three TD’s in fourth quarter, two of them by defense- an 18-yard fumble return with 2:37 left covered the spread. Miami is now 10-18 in last 28 games as road underdogs. There were five TD’s in this game, one for each offense- Miami ran a punt back for a TD. Cincy’s offense is suspect without TE Eifert.

Vikings 23, Eagles 21— Game was 3-3 when a sack/fumble was run back 64 yards for a TD that put Minnesota ahead to stay; Vikings scored only one offensive TD, tried five FG’s (two missed), but they hung on for win, avenging loss in LY’s playoffs. Eagles scored TD down 20-6 with 12:05 left; for whatever reason, they went for 2, which NEVER happens, but they made it. All five Eagle games this season were decided by 6 or fewer points.

Steelers 41, Falcons 17— Roethlisberger tried really, really hard to get ball to Antonio Brown in this game; he targeted Brown 13 times, completed only six, but for 101 yards. Big Ben threw an awful INT in end zone at end of first half, but Steelers dominated second half. Falcons allowed 43-37-41 points in their last three games.

Here is a breakdown of Atlanta’s offense:
2 road games, both on grass fields: 22 drives, three TD’s
3 road games, all indoors on turf: 30 drives, 13 TD’s

Rams 33, Seahawks 31— LA receivers Cooks/Kupp were both KO’d in first half (concussions) but Rams scored 16 points in second half anyway, gaining 194 yards on 23 plays on three scoring drives on first three 2nd half drives, then killing clock for final 3:28 on last drive. Gurley scored three TD’s for Rams. Seattle ran ball for 190 yards, gave it their very best shot here. Seahawks are 8-2 vs spread in last ten games as home underdogs.

Bills 13, Titans 12— Only one TD in this game, and that was on a 47-yard drive by Bills; Buffalo has one TD on 20 drives in its last two games- when was last time an NFL team won a game with only 79 passing yards? Tennessee’s last four games were decided by total of 10 points; Titans turned ball over six times (-3) in their two losses, one time (+1) in their three wins.

Jets 34, Broncos 16— Jets ran ball for 323 yards, which doesn’t happen much in NFL games; they had TD plays of 77,76 yards in first 5:00 of second quarter. Gang Green is now 7-2-1 in last ten games as home underdogs; Denver is 7-11-2 in last 20 games where spread was 3 or fewer points. Jets led 24-10 at half; they had total of 31 first half points in first four games.

Chargers 26, Raiders 10— With 1:05 left in third quarter and down 20-3, Carr threw an awful INT in end zone, ending Oakland’s day. Team that won field position won all five Raider games. Chargers averaged 11.9 yards/pass play; they won field position in last two games by 19-14 yards. Bolts are +5 in turnovers in last four games; they had 14-yard edge in field position here.

Cardinals 28, 49ers 18— Cardinals are 12-4 vs spread in last 16 NFC West road games; they’ve won last seven games vs 49ers, but these were Arizona’s four TD’s Sunday:

          — Arizona’s first offensive play was a 75-yard TD pass.
          — 18 yards, four plays after a 49er fumble.
          — Defensive touchdown
          — 26 yards, five plays after a 49er INT.

San Francisco was -5 (0-5) in turnovers; hard to win that way.

Texans 19, Cowboys 16 OT— Houston outgained Cowboys 462-292, but scored only one TD on six red zone drives. Dallas is 19-60 on third down this year; they’ve scored only seven TD’s on 49 drives, 33 points on last eight red zone drives. Cowboys are desperate for an explosive WR; other than RB Elliott (7 targets), no other Cowboy had more than four targets.

Bruins' Bergeron has hat trick; Sabres' Eichel gets 2 in win
                October 8, 2018
                By The Associated Press

BOSTON (AP) Patrice Bergeron had a hat trick, scoring his first just 30 seconds into the game, and Tuukka Rask stopped 28 shots to earn his first win of the season while leading the Boston Bruins to a 6-3 victory over the Ottawa Senators on Monday.

Bergeron also had an assist, David Pastrnak had two goals and two assists and Charlie McAvoy had his first career three-assist game for Boston.

Brad Marchand picked up his fifth, sixth and seventh assists in three games so far this season, and Chris Wagner also scored for the Bruins in their home opener.

It was their fifth straight victory over Ottawa and their second straight win this season since losing the opener 7-0 to the Washington Capitals on the night they raised their Stanley Cup championship banner.

Ryan Dzingel scored twice for the Senators, who picked up a 5-on-3 power play with about 12 minutes left but failed to score. Mike Condon made 24 saves for Ottawa.

                SABRES 4, GOLDEN KNIGHTS 2

BUFFALO, N.Y. (AP) - Jack Eichel scored two goals to lead Buffalo Sabres to its second straight win.

Marco Scandella and Jason Pominville had the other goals and Carter Hutton made 35 saves for the Sabres (2-1-0).

Erik Haula and Jonathan Marchessault scored for the Golden Knights (1-2-0), playing the second of a five-game road trip. Haula had the winning shootout goal in Vegas' victory at Minnesota on Saturday. Marc-Andre Fleury made 13 saves.

                ISLANDERS 4, SHARKS 0

NEW YORK (AP) - Robin Lehner stopped 35 shots for his ninth career shutout in his New York debut, leading the Islanders over San Jose.

Anders Lee, Scott Mayfield, Matt Martin and Casey Cizikas scored to help New York get new coach Barry Trotz his first win at home. The Islanders, who opened the season with an overtime win at Carolina last Thursday, then lost their home opener to Nashville two nights later.

                    Tuesday’s six-pack

Six interesting college football games this weekend:

                    — Miami (-6) @ Virginia

                    — Texas A&M (-2) @ South Carolina

                    — Colorado @ USC (-7.5)

                    — Washington (-3.5) @ Oregon

                    — Wisconsin @ Michigan (-7.5)

                    — West Virginia (-6.5) @ Iowa State

                    Quote of the Day
“He’s such a great quarterback, you have to do a really good job early in the game, otherwise he’s going to be out front, and you don’t want to play him from behind. This guy is so good, now. Even if … there might’ve been something he hadn’t seen before early in the game, you know he’s going to dial into it pretty quick and then he’s going to have success.

It’s that whole mental toughness of playing 60 minutes against that guy because he is so dangerous in those situations.”
Lions coach Matt Patricia, on coaching against Aaron Rodgers

                    Tuesday’s quiz
Who was the San Diego Chargers’ coach when Drew Brees was an NFL rookie?
(Hint: He’s been a major college head coach since then)

                    Monday’s quiz
James Buchanan was the only bachelor President of the United States.

                    Sunday’s quiz
Pittsburgh Steelers have had only three head coaches since 1969.

                    *************************

Tuesday’s List of 13: Nobody asked me, but…….

                    13) If you like the NFL and you’re in Las Vegas, a Sunday afternoon in the theater at the Westgate Casino is something you have to do.

1,500 seats, all the games are on, there are betting windows in the back, a concession stand on the left, and it is surprisingly quiet— everyone has always been cool when I’ve been there.

                    12) Saints 43, Redskins 19— New Orleans’ first four drives Monday night: 30 plays, 276 yards, four TD’s, two missed PAT’s. Last of the four TD’s was a 62-yard pass that put Drew Brees on top of the all-time passing yardage list.

There was a brief ceremony after the record-setting play; Saints actually got penalized 15 yards for excessive celebration.

                    11) Oklahoma lost 48-45 to Texas Saturday, so of course a coach had to get fired; DC Mike Stoops was told to take a hike. Ruffin McNeill, former HC of East Carolina, will be the new DC, which ain’t going to help a damn thing. Recruit more good defensive players!!!!

                    10) Alabama QB Tua Tagovailoa has thrown 18 TD passes this season, and only 25 incomplete passes. Bama’s backup QB has a 26-2 record as the starter.

                    9) Boston 16, New York 1— Brock Holt is the first baseball player ever to hit for the cycle in a playoff game; how weird is that?

David Price sucks in the postseason, and he doesn’t pitch well against New York; Red Sox still owe Price $127M over the next four seasons, but when you’re a fat-cat team, you can afford miscues like this, and just spend more money to overcome them.

                    9) AFC North is only division in NFL where all the team are .500 or better.

                    8) If you think your favorite team is screwed up, be thankful you don’t root for the Phoenix Suns, who fired GM Ryan McDonough Monday, eight days before the season starts.

Last year, the Suns fired coach Earl Watson AFTER THREE GAMES. Oy.

                    7) Looks weird seeing Lebron James wearing a Lakers’ jersey; Lakers-Warriors play here in Las Vegas tomorrow night at T-Mobile Center.

                    6) Spurs’ PG Dejounte Murray tore his ACL Sunday night; he was expected to be the Spurs’ PG this season, replacing the departed Tony Parker.

                    5) 49ers ran 92 plays in their loss to Arizona Sunday; Cardinals ran only 49, but when you’re minus-5 in turnovers, not else matters too much. Still, 92 plays is a hell of a lot for an NFL game.

                    4) You see Cleveland 12, Baltimore 9 and you think it was an ugly game, but yardage was actually 416-410, Browns, so both teams moved the ball well enough, they were just useless in the red zone, scoring 18 points on six drives.

                    3) Over $50M of the Buffalo Bills’ payroll this year is going to players who aren’t on the team.

                    2) FOX TV analyst Chris Spielman said Sunday that he considers Aaron Rodgers to be the best QB ever. Pretty strong statement.

                    1) According to the 2010 US Census, Los Angeles County has more people than these 12 states combined:

                    Alaska, Delaware, Hawai’i, Idaho
Maine, Maryland, New Hampshire, North Dakota
Rhode Island, South Dakota, West Virginia, Wyoming

                            Grand Salami - October
                            October 9, 2018
                            By VI News

The Grand Salami in pro hockey is decided by adding up all the goals scored in every game scheduled for that particular day. You can wager on 'over' or 'under' the Grand Salami total. The total is set by adding up all listed 'over/under' odds for each game on that particular day.

Note: The Grand Salami will have no action if any game is suspended or cancelled before the regulation time of three twenty minute periods. Also, regardless of the number of goals scored during the shoot out portion of the overtime, the final scored recorded for the game will give the winning team on more goal than its opponent based on the score at the end of regulation time.

*The majority of sportsbooks do not put out a total on the Grand Salami when there is only one game on the card. For tracking purposes, we will continue to show the 'over/under' for goals and combined goals scored on days with just one game.

True grit: Sharks jump on Flyers early in 8-2 blowout
                                October 9, 2018
                                By The Associated Press

PHILADELPHIA (AP) Joe Pavelski scored two of San Jose's four first-period goals, and Evander Kane also scored twice to spark the Sharks to an 8-2 win over the Philadelphia Flyers on Tuesday night.

Flyers fans were still buzzing from the pregame festivities for the home opener, which included rookie mascot Gritty rappelling from the rafters to the ice, when the Sharks pounced.

The Flyers turned over the puck at the point, and Couture beat the odd-man rush and fired his first goal of the season past Brian Elliott. Pavelski made it 2-0 just 11 seconds later when he knocked in a rebound for his first goal of the season.

The Sharks, a Stanley Cup favorite, were just warming up. They had five goals in their first three games and then scored five goals through two periods.

Kane added his second of the game and fourth of the season in the second to make it 5-1. Tomas Hertl, Timo Meier and Barclay Goodrow also scored in the third for an 8-1 lead. Aaron Dell stopped 31 shots.

Shayne Gostisbehere and Wayne Simmonds scored for the Flyers.
