Greiss stops 35 shots, Islanders blank Devils 3-0

NEW YORK (AP) Thomas Greiss made 35 saves for his first shutout of the season, and the New York Islanders beat the New Jersey Devils 3-0 on Saturday night for their fifth straight win.

It was Greiss' ninth career shutout. Dating to Oct. 28, Greiss has allowed just four goals on 114 shots.

Jordan Eberle, Brock Nelson and Scott Mayfield scored for New York, which improved to 6-0-0 against the Metropolitan Division this season. Josh Bailey had two assists to extend his point streak to eight games.

New Jersey lost for the sixth time in seven games after opening the season with four wins. Keith Kinkaid had 30 saves.

The Devils came up empty on two early power-play chances before Eberle tapped in Anders Lee's rebound on the power play 7:43 into the game.

Nelson got his team-leading seventh goal of the season with 4:54 left, and Mayfield sealed the win with an empty-netter.

STARS 4, CAPITALS 3, OT

WASHINGTON (AP) - Jason Spezza and Tyler Pitlick scored 10 seconds apart, Jason Dickinson had the overtime winner and Dallas beat Washington to win its third straight.

Dickinson scored 3:17 into overtime to salvage two points for Dallas, which also got a goal from captain Jamie Benn and is finally finding its game under first-year coach Jim Montgomery. Ben Bishop stopped 29 shots to beat the Capitals for just the third time in 12 games.

Bishop allowed sharp-angle, short-side goals to Nicklas Backstrom and Evgeny Kuznetsov during an inconsistent performance. Brett Connolly also scored for Washington, batting the puck out of the air before Bishop could get back to glove it away.

Capitals goalie Braden Holtby made 32 saves and stopped Tyler Seguin on a penalty shot in overtime but lost to the Stars for the fifth time in eight games.

MAPLE LEAFS 5, PENGUINS 0

PITTSBURGH (AP) - Frederik Andersen made 31 saves for his first shutout of the season and 16th overall to help Toronto blank high-scoring Pittsburgh.

Morgan Rielly scored twice and John Tavares had a goal and an assist to help Toronto improve to 6-0 on the road. The Maple Leafs are averaging an NHL-best 5.4 goals on the road. Zach Hyman and Patrick Marleau also scored and Kasperi Kapanen had two assists.

The Maple Leafs picked up their first win with star forward Auston Matthews out indefinitely with a shoulder injury. Toronto scored just one goal in each of its two straight regulation losses without Matthews, who has 10 goals and 16 points in 11 games.

Evgeni Malkin saw his nine-game point streak end for the Penguins, losers of three straight.

Matt Murray made 26 saves for Pittsburgh.

SABRES 9, SENATORS 2

BUFFALO, N.Y. (AP) - Jeff Skinner and Jason Pominville each had two goals and an assist to lead Buffalo.

Conor Sheary, Casey Mittlestadt, Patrik Berglund and Zemgus Girgensons added a goal and an assist apiece, Kyle Okposo also scored, Jack Eichel had three assists and Linus Ullmark made 27 saves for the Sabres, who snapped a three-game losing streak.

Pominville extended his point streak to seven games, his longest since 2014, after being honored in a pregame ceremony for playing his 1,000th NHL game Thursday night in Ottawa.

Max McCormick and Thomas Chabot scored for Ottawa and Mike McKenna stopped 25 shots after replacing Craig Anderson in goal late in the first period. The Senators have lost five of their last six

MONTREAL (AP) - Steven Stamkos scored two goals to lead Tampa Bay.

J.T. Miller and Yanni Gourde also scored for the Lightning, winners of nine of 13 games this season. Anton Stralman had three assists. Andrei Vasilevskiy continued his dominant start in the nets, finishing with 34 saves in his seventh victory.

Max Domi scored the only goal for the Canadiens. Carey Price made 32 saves in the loss.

The Lightning improved to 6-0-0 against Eastern Conference opponents this season.

OILERS 4, RED WINGS 3

DETROIT (AP) - Kyle Brodziak scored his first two goals of the season and star center Connor McDavid extended his points streak to seven games for Edmonton.

Drake Caggiula and Alex Chiasson also scored for Edmonton, which has won five of its last six. McDavid and Jujhar Khaira had two assists each and Mikko Koskinen made 23 saves.

McDavid has five goals and five assists during his run.

Jacob de la Rose, defenseman Danny DeKeyser and Tyler Bertuzzi scored for Detroit, which had won three straight. Jonathan Bernier stopped 38 shots.

WILD 5, BLUES 1

ST. LOUIS (AP) - Eric Staal got his 400th career goal to lead Minnesota.

Staal became just the 96th player in NHL history to reach the milestone, accomplishing the feat less than five minutes into the game. He joined Alex Ovechkin, Patrick Marleau, Ilya Kovalchuk, Sidney Crosby, and Marian Gaborik as the only active players with the mark.

Nick Seeler, J.T. Brown, Matt Dumba and Eric Fehr also scored for the Wild. Devan Dubnyk stopped 15 shots.

Ryan O'Reilly scored for St. Louis, and Jake Allen finished with 40 saves.

Sunday’s List of 13: Wrapping up a college football Saturday

13) Auburn 28, Texas A&M 24— Talk about gagging a game away; with 7:14 left, A&M led 24-14 and had the ball on the Auburn 43. The ESPN TV guys were talking about running the ball and about clock management, taking time off the clock, but the Aggies threw an INT on the very next play. Not good.

Game completely swung on that play; Auburn had TD drives of 71-58 yards in the last 6:00 and pulled out a game that looked lost midway thru the 4th quarter.

12) West Virginia 42, Texas 41— This was a tremendous game, too bad Gus Johnson had the play-by-play and went into his hysterical act with both TD’s late in this game. He calls the action well, but if the game is close at the end, it always has to become about him and his screaming.

West Virginia trailed 41-34, but scored a TD with 0:16 left; Mountaineers went for 2 and the win— QB Will Grier ran it in for the two points.

I’ve said here before that I’m not a fan of going for two points in that situation, but Grier is a senior QB and coach Holgorsen trusted him to get the two points, and he did.

11) Georgia 34, Kentucky 17— Swift/Holyfield both ran the ball for 100+ yards as the Dawgs KO’d Kentucky and clinched the SEC East title- Georgia plays Auburn next week.

Kentucky RB Benny Snell Jr is very good; his dad was a RB for the Las Vegas Outlaws in the XFL in the one year that league existed. Snell’s granddad is cousins with Matt Snell, a terrific RB who helped the Jets win Super Bowl III.

10) South Carolina 48, Ole Miss 44— Teams played so little defense, it looked like they were auditioning to join the Big X. Ole Miss didn’t punt until midway thru the third quarter.

Rebels gained 616 yards but lost; Gamecocks averaged 11.3 yards/pass attempt and won.

9) Michigan State 24, Maryland 3— Terrapins’ offensive line were the people who were upset about coach coach DJ Durkin being re-instated this week; they helped get him fired the next day, but the OL was useless in this game. Maryland ran 53 plays for a total of only 100 yards.

8) Central Florida 52, Temple 40— UCF is 8-0, but when you’re trailing Temple 34-28 at the half and the Owls get 35 first downs against you, you’re not going too impress the pollsters who may not want to be impressed in the first place.

6) Clemson 77, Louisville 16— Two years ago, Louisville was -2.5 at Clemson, but lost 42-36; they were +39 in this game and didn’t come close to covering. Even Dabo Swinney’s son scored a TD, his first-ever college touchdown. Clemson ran the ball for 492 yards, which is just total domination.

5) Ohio State 36, Nebraska 31— OSU fans are spoiled; Buckeyes trailed 21-16 at halftime, got booed off their home field- not much enthusiasm for a team that is now 8-1.

4) NC State 47, Florida State 28— Seminoles were 5-6 LY; they’re 4-5 this year. From 2012-16, FSU was 59-9; what the hell happened?

3) Purdue 38, Iowa 36— Boilermakers kicked a FG with 0:08 left to win the game after blowing a 35-23 fourth quarter lead. Iowa tried and failed on a pair of 2-point conversions earlier in second half, otherwise this might’ve been an overtime game.

Purdue has won five of its last six games after an 0-3 start.

2) Oklahoma 51, Texas Tech 46— Tech led 31-28 at halftime, but apparently their QB Bowman got drilled in the head with a football while warming up for the second half and went back to the locker room for evaluation- he didn’t play in the second half, or return to the sidelines.

1) Michigan 42, Penn State 7— Wolverines’ defense is really good; in their last six games, Michigan has allowed 12.5 ppg, only 185.8 ypg. Notre Dame/SMU are only two teams that gained more than 300 yards against the Wolverines this season.

Penn State lost three of last five games; they’re 0-3 when scoring less than 30 points.

Lundqvist, Vesey lead Rangers to 3-1 win over Sabres

NEW YORK (AP) Henrik Lundqvist was in vintage form in helping the New York Rangers get a big win.

Lundqvist stopped 39 shots and Jimmy Vesey scored twice to lead New York to its third straight victory, 3-1 over the Buffalo Sabres on Sunday night.

''Hank was outstanding tonight,'' Rangers coach David Quinn said. ''We managed a way to get it done. I thought the third period we did a pretty good job of managing the puck and getting it behind them.''

Neal Pionk also scored for New York, and rookie Brett Howden picked up his sixth assist of the season before leaving with an injury in the second period.

''I think we earned this type of game,'' Lundqvist said. ''Then in the third, I think we played our best period. Tonight, we made some really strong plays at the right time.''

Lundqvist was stellar while picking up his fourth win of the season and 435th of his career, moving just two behind Jacaues Plante for seventh place on the NHL's all-time list.

Conor Sheary scored for Buffalo and Carter Hutton made 19 saves.

The Rangers made the most of their first two shots in the middle period, scoring twice within 19 seconds.

''We capitalized on a few chances we had and that was the difference in the game,'' Vesey said.

Pionk scored 41 seconds into the period when his wrist shot sailed past Hutton. Vladislav Namestnikov and Mika Zibanejad assisted on the play. On the Rangers' next shot, Vesey snapped off a wrist shot from the slot to make it 2-0. Howden made a nifty drop pass to set up his linemate.

Howden crashed hard into the boards later in the second before being helped off the ice with about 6 1/2 minutes remaining. He did not return.

Lundqvist appeared to be injured late in the second when Rasmus Dahlin, the first overall pick in June's NHL draft, collided with his Swedish countrymate. However, after an extended look from the trainer, Lundqvist remained in the game.

Sheary took advantage of a turnover by Brendan Smith to pull the Sabres within one as he scored off his own rebound at 6:07 of the third.

''I really liked the way we played from start to finish,'' Sabres coach Phil Housley said. ''We would like to take two or three shifts back in the second period. ... It's just important in those situations when it's a tight hockey game you can't take a shift off. You can't let your guard down and they capitalized on some soft coverage. It's a good lesson to be learned.''

The Rangers had allowed a tying or go-ahead goal in the final minute of their previous three games on the west coast trip but managed to win the last two with the help of a shootout. Sunday, Vesey tallied an empty-netter to seal the deal.

Buffalo finished 0 for 4 on the power play, and New York was 0 for 1.

The Sabres' top line of Jeff Skinner, Jack Eichel and Jason Pominville has been one of the best trio's in the NHL since being put together. After combining for 38 points in the previous seven games, they were held scoreless by the Rangers.

NOTES: F Pavel Buchnevich returned to the Rangers' lineup after being a healthy scratch for the second time this season. ... F Chris Kreider skated in his 395th career NHL game. ... Rangers F Ryan Spooner missed the game due to a lower-body injury. D Adam McQuaid has missed three straight games and is now considered week-to-week not day-to-day. ... Buffalo scratched F Tage Thompson and F Remi Elie along with D Nathan Beaulieu.

Saints 45, Rams 35— New Orleans had 18 first downs, three TD’s on its first 32 plays in this game; then they blew a 35-14 lead- wild game, but they pulled away late. Saints have won their last seven games; average total in their four home games is 67.3.

Former NFL ref Gene Steratore posted this Sunday morning:

“Through Week 8, the average number of penalties accepted per game is 13.4- that is the fewest since 2013. Despite what most may think, the refs are letting them play this season.”

Vikings 24, Lions 9— Minnesota is now 10-0 vs spread (9-1 SU) in its last nine pre-bye games; they’ve won four of last five games. Yardage in this game was just 283-209, and game was indoors. Under Zimmer, Minnesota is 21-7 as home favorites, 3-2 this year.

Vikings sacked Stafford 10 times; in its last two games, Detroit has run ball for 34-66 yards. Obviously, they’ve got some issues on the offensive line.

Steelers 23, Ravens 16— One of key plays in this game was a 22-yard pass by backup QB Dobbs to Smith-Schuster when Steelers were backed up on own 5-yard line with 20-13 lead and 12:35 left to play- drive ended in a clinching FG. It was Dobbs’ only play of the game. This was just second win for Steelers in their last six visits here.

Pittsburgh converted 10-16 on third down, outgained Baltimore 395-268 in a game with no turnovers. Ravens lost their last three games, are 4-5 heading into their bye week.

Panthers 42, Buccaneers 28— Three of Carolina’s six TD’s came on drives of 42 or fewer yards; Panthers ran ball for 179 yards, are looking strong- they’re a game behind New Orleans in NFC South- teams have two meetings coming up.

In their last six games, Bucs are an astounding minus-17 in turnovers. Over is 7-1 in Tampa Bay games; hard to believe the Bucs won’t be cleaning house again when this season ends- they allowed 30+ points in five of their last six games.

Dolphins 13, Jets 6— This was an unusual boxscore:
— Jets’ offense ran 64 plays; they were outscored on those 7-6 by Miami’s defense.
— Neither team scored an offensive touchdown.
— Total yardage was 282-168, Jets- Miami had only 7 first downs.
— Teams combined to convert only five of 29 third down plays.
— There was only one play the whole game inside either team’s red zone.
— Not many team go +4 in turnovers and score only 13 points.

Bears 41, Bills 9— This was an even more unusual boxscore:
— Chicago led 28-0 at the half; their defense scored two of the TD’s.
— The other two first half TD’s came on drives of only 37-23 yards.
— Total yardage was 264-190 Bills, and they lost by 32 points.
— Bills turned ball over four times (-3); Bears had 18-yard edge in field position, and thats not counting their two defensive TD’s.
— What Buffalo has done this year is just astoundingly bad; they made the playoffs LY for first time in 19 years, but quickly traded LY’s QB and are now the worst team in the NFL.
— New England’s three AFC East rivals scored a total of 28 points Sunday.

Falcons 38, Redskins 14— Atlanta was 10-13 on third down in this game; they’ve converted 42 of last 68 third down plays- this was their first win in three outdoor games this season.

NFC East teams are 1-8 vs spread as non-divisional favorites this season. Washington leads that division with an unimpressive 5-3 record.

Texans 19, Broncos 17— Houston is first team since the 1970 New York Giants to start a season 0-3, then win their next six games. Broncos missed a 51-yard FG wide right in the last minute.

Denver lost six of its last seven games, appears headed to its first consecutive losing seasons since the mid-70’s- they’re 2-5-2 in last nine games as home favorites. Under is 4-1 in last five Houston games, 6-2 in last eight Denver games.

Boyle scores 3 times as Devils beat Penguins 5-1

PITTSBURGH (AP) Brian Boyle scored three times for his first career hat trick, and the New Jersey Devils beat the Pittsburgh Penguins 5-1 on Monday.

Boyle got his natural hat trick on ''Hockey Fights Cancer'' night in Pittsburgh. It included two power-play goals and two redirections in front of the net.

The 33-year-old Boyle was diagnosed with a form of bone marrow cancer at the beginning of training camp last season. He underwent treatment, returned to the lineup last November and won the NHL's Masterton Trophy, best exemplifying qualities of perseverance, sportsmanship and dedication to hockey.

Will Butcher had a goal and two assists for New Jersey, and Travis Zajac scored his fourth goal. The Devils stopped a three-game slide with their first road win.

Jamie Oleksiak scored for the Penguins, who have dropped four in a row.

CAPITALS 4, OILERS 2

WASHINGTON (AP) - Alex Ovechkin scored on the power play, backup goaltender Pheonix Copley made 31 saves and Washington ended its two-game losing streak.

The defending Stanley Cup champions came out flying two days after a mistake-filled overtime loss to Dallas. Jakub Vrana scored on his first turn with the fourth line after being demoted, and linemate Devante Smith-Pelly scored on the group's second shift a few minutes later as the Capitals jumped all over Cam Talbot and the Oilers.

Ovechkin's 11th goal of the season was his 234th career on the power play, tying him with Marcel Dionne for eighth on the career list. T.J. Oshie also scored by firing short-side on Talbot, who allowed four goals on 23 shots in his first start since Oct. 30.

Oilers captain Connor McDavid extended his point streak to eight games with his 10th goal of the season. Leon Draisaitl scored for Edmonton, which lost for just the second time in seven games.

BRUINS 2, STARS 1, OT

BOSTON (AP) - Brad Marchand scored a power-play goal 4:29 into overtime, lifting the Bruins to the victory.

David Pastrnak also scored on the power play for Boston, which had lost two of three. Tuukka Rask made 24 saves.

Radek Faksa had a short-handed goal for the Stars, who are 3-1-1 on a six-game trip. Former Bruins goaltender Anton Khudobin stopped 33 shots.

Boston had a two-man power play in overtime after Jason Dickinson and Esa Lindell were whistled for minors 11 seconds apart. Marchand banked in a shot off the far post from the bottom of the right circle.

CANADIENS 4, ISLANDERS 3, SO

NEW YORK (AP) - Joel Armia scored in the fifth round of the shootout to send Montreal to the road win.

The Canadiens rallied from two goals down to win for the fifth time in the last six meetings with the Islanders. Max Domi and Jonathan Drouin each had a goal and an assist, Artturi Lehkonen also scored and Noah Juulsen added two assists.

Antti Niemi started in place of Carey Price and made 21 saves before stopping all five of New York's attempts in the shootout.

Casey Cizikas scored twice and Valtteri Filppula also had a goal for the Islanders, who had won five in a row. Thomas Greiss stopped 32 shots and the first four skaters in the tiebreaker.

FLYERS 5, COYOTES 2

GLENDALE, Ariz. (AP) - Claude Giroux had two goals and an assist, Calvin Pickard stopped 35 shots and Philadelphia ended Arizona's five-game winning streak.

The Flyers jumped on the Coyotes early, going up 2-0 after first-period goals from Giroux and Shayne Gostisbehere. Sean Couturier also scored and Oskar Lindblom added an empty-net goal for Philadelphia, which completed its four-game trip 3-0-1.

Pickard made his second straight start after Michael Neuvirth was placed on injured reserve and Brian Elliott was injured colliding with teammate Travis Konecny during practice Sunday.

Pickard was sharp most of the night, giving up Alex Galchenyuk's power-play goal in the second period and Michael Grabner's goal late in the third.
