        • Blues defense fuels offense in 4-2 Game 2 win over Sharks
          May 13, 2019
          ShareFacebookTwitterDiggMySpace

SAN JOSE, Calif. (AP) Defensemen Vince Dunn and Robert Bortuzzo scored second-period goals that helped the St. Louis Blues overcome another big game from San Jose's Logan Couture with a 4-2 victory Monday night that tied the Western Conference final at one game apiece.

Dunn's second goal of the postseason gave the Blues a 2-0 lead and Bortuzzo then added his first career playoff goal late in the period after Couture had tied the score. Jaden Schwartz and Oskar Sundqvist also scored and Jordan Binnington made 23 saves to send the Blues home for Game 3 on Wednesday night tied in the series.

Couture scored his goals in a span of 1:59, giving him an NHL-leading 13 this postseason but the Sharks couldn't get anything else and lost their third straight Game 2 after winning the series opener. Martin Jones made 21 saves.

Couture tried to take over the game for the sluggish Sharks after they fell behind 2-0 in the second period on Dunn's point shot that beat Jones through a screen. The Blues were in position to add onto that lead after a questionable interference call against Marcus Sorensen when Couture single-handedly turned things around.

He took the puck from Alex Pietrangelo at the blue line and skated in on Binnington for the short-handed goal just 16 seconds into St. Louis' man advantage, waking up the crowd.

Couture struck again shortly after the penalty was killed, taking a stretch pass from Timo Meier and firing a shot between the pads for the equalizer, giving him 100 career postseason points.

The Blues then answered late in the period with a pretty goal from an unlikely source. Bortuzzo passed the puck from the point to Tyler Bozak and skated in behind Joe Thornton. He then took a pass from Joel Edmundson and beat Jones with a backhander into the top corner for his first career playoff goal.

Bortuzzo added a big blocked shot in the third when Kevin Labanc got a pass in the slot with time to shoot. The Blues then killed off a power play later in the period before getting the insurance goal with 3:08 remaining when Alexander Steen fed Sundqvist on a rush for the goal that made it 4-2.

The Sharks were looking to avoid their pattern from the first two rounds when they followed up convincing Game 1 wins with losses at home in the next contest.

But the Blues were the more desperate team from the start and got the early lead when Schwartz finished off a give-and-go with Vladimir Tarasenko with a shot into the corner of the net from the faceoff circle just 2:34 into the game.

St. Louis had chances to add onto that lead but Jones made a point-blank stop against Sundqvist and then was helped out when Colton Parayko's shot went off the post. The game remained 1-0 after the first because St. Louis couldn't convert on two power-play chances and San Jose came up empty on its chance with the man advantage.

NOTES: Couture is the fourth player this decade with 100 playoff points, trailing only Sidney Crosby (123), Patrick Kane (109) and Evgeni Malkin (106). ... Schwartz has nine goals in the playoffs after scoring just 11 in the regular season.

Armadillo: Tuesday's List of 13: Nobody asked me, but……

              13) John Beilein signed a 5-year deal to coach the Cleveland Cavaliers:
              — Beilein is 66, so worst case scenario for him, he fattens his retirement fund.
              — Beilein is one of 28 coaches in NCAA history (all divisions) with 750+ career wins (754-425); he will be the first of those 28 to coach in the NBA.
              — Beilein’s last losing season was 2009-10 (15-17) at Michigan. He is a very good coach, but the NBA is more about players than coaches.
              — This figures to set off a domino effect of other coaching changes.
              — What %age of college coaches have the itch to try the NBA?

              12) Kawhi Leonard took 39 of Toronto’s 89 shots in Game 7 Sunday; rest of the team was 18-50 (36%) from the floor, and they still won.

Don’t see lot of NBA games where one team used only two subs, the other one three subs. 76ers’ subs played total of only 27:00 Sunday.

              11) Brett Brown will return as the 76ers’ coach next year; not even sure why this would be an issue, but apparently it was. Who could they hire that would be better?

              10) Justin Thomas (wrist) withdrew from this week’s PGA Championship Monday.

              9) Former Seattle Seahawks punter Jon Ryan is returning to his hometown of Regina, Saskatchewan to punt for the CFL’s Roughriders this summer.

              8) PG recruit Boogie Ellis switched his commitment from Duke to Memphis, as Penny Hardaway establishes himself as one of the best recruiters in the country.

              7) Baseball stuff:
              — A’s activated Mark Canha, DFA’d 1B/DH Kendrys Morales
              — Bronx put P Jonathan Loaisiga (shoulder), 3B Miguel Andujar on IL
              — Detroit put P Tyson Ross on IL.
              — White Sox P Carlos Rodon needs Tommy John surgery, is out for the year.

              6) First-round matchups for the Paradise Jam tournament in November:
              — Valparaiso-Grand Canyon
              — Fordham-Nevada
              — Illinois State-Cincinnati
              — Bowling Green-Western Kentucky

              5) On Sept. 28, 1974, Nolan Ryan threw a no-hitter against the Twins, walking eight and striking out 15- he threw 158 pitches that night. Safe to say you won’t see that happen anytime in the next 10-20 years, at least.

              4) David Letterman is going to be a guest on the Sunday Today show this week; he has this thick gray beard now and looks like he should be on Duck Dynasty instead of the Today Show.

              3) College basketball transfer portal:
              — Pitt grad transfer Malik Ellison bolts to Hartford.

              2) St Louis 4, San Jose 2— Western Conference finals are tied 1-1.

              1) Get well to former President Jimmy Carter, who had surgery for a broken hip today after he fell while leaving his house to go turkey hunting. Mr Carter is 94 years old.

                • Preview: Bruins (49-24) at Hurricanes (46-29)

RALEIGH, N.C. -- The Boston Bruins see no reason for significant changes with the way the Eastern Conference finals are going against the Carolina Hurricanes.

At the very least, the venue will be different for Game 3 as the Bruins look to put a stranglehold on the series Tuesday night at PNC Arena. Boston won each of the first two games at home.

"We know that they play well there (in Raleigh)," Bruins defenseman Charlie McAvoy said. "Refocusing, resetting and getting ready to play in a hostile environment, and we just plan to play to our standards and our culture."

The Hurricanes returned home for the second time in this postseason facing a 2-0 deficit. They overcame that in the first round against the defending Stanley Cup champion Washington Capitals.

"We've done it before," Hurricanes captain Justin Williams said. "Experience, that's what we lean on right now."

Yet they didn't like the way they played in the two games at Boson. The six-game winning streak that Carolina put together vanished as the Bruins won twice by a combined 11-4 score.

One of the priorities for the Hurricanes is to put the Bruins through some adversity.

"We're certainly going to make it as tough as we can on them, and it won't be easy," Williams said. "Our identity hasn't been established in this series, so far."

The Bruins are aware that the Hurricanes haven't come this far just to fade away. So that's the part that's a bit of the unknown for Boston.

"Teams don't make it to this round if they don't have their tough group of guys," Bruins goalie Tuukka Rask said. "It's 2-0, that's good. We took care of business at home, which is what we wanted to do, now try to transfer that on the road."

Carolina goalie Petr Mrazek has a similar outlook.

"It's 2-0. We've been in this situation before," Mrazek said. "We know what we can do at home."

Hurricanes coach Rod Brind'Amour has been vague about his goalie situation for Game 3, though he has pointed out multiple times that the core of the problems in Boston weren't related to goaltending.

Mrazek was injured in the second-round series against the New York Islanders, and Curtis McElhinney played in Carolina nets in the final two-plus games as the Hurricanes produced a four-game sweep.

Now the Hurricanes must deal with Boston's onslaught of offense. The Bruins have secured contributions up and down the lineup in the postseason.

"Depth scoring is so crucial for playoffs," Bruins defenseman Torey Krug said. "Most of the time when you see a matchup, the two big lines are going head to head, that kind of washes each other out typically over a series, and then you have the depth scoring that comes into play, and that's what wins you games. ... We want to bottle that up and continue to use it to our advantage."

The Bruins have had 21 players post at least one point in this spring's playoffs.

"I think this year because we've scored a lot more up and down the line," Boston coach Bruce Cassidy said. "It's just a little easier to roll lines and look for your matchup but roll lines and not have to overextend skill guys."

The Bruins are expecting to see an improved Hurricanes team.

"You don't get here by accident, so we know that they are going to be better next game," McAvoy said.

                    • Bruins vs Hurricanes NHL betting picks and predictions: Carolina rallies behind home crowd
                      Monty Andrews

Petr Mrazek and the Carolina Hurricanes will look to bounce back at home as -120 favorites against the Boston Bruins in the Stanley Cup playoffs.

The Boston Bruins thoroughly outclassed the Carolina Hurricanes in the opening two games of their Eastern Conference final showdown – but things won't be nearly as easy as the series shifts to Raleigh for Game 3.

The Hurricanes were walloped by a combined 11-4 score in back-to-back losses at TD Garden, and will need a victory Tuesday night to avoid falling into a virtually inescapable 3-0 hole. Fortunately for the hosts, they have been truly dominant at home during the Stanley Cup playoffs, and will look to penetrate a stout Bruins defense and goaltending combo that has been quite stingy on the road.

We break down the odds and give you the best betting notes and leans so you can make a profit on the playoff action on the ice.
Boston Bruins at Carolina Hurricanes (-120, 5.5)

                      QUICK-HITTER

PNC Arena will be hopping for this one, as it welcomes back a Hurricanes team that looked out of sync at both ends of the ice on the way to allowing 10 consecutive goals to the Bruins between Games 1 and 2. And getting off to a fast start will be critical for a Carolina team that has just seven first-period goals in the postseason; by comparison, Boston has 16. We like both sides to see plenty of scoring chances in the early going, making the O1.5 on the first-period play a great way to get things started.

                      PREDICTION: Over 1.5 first-period goals (-105)

                      PERIOD BET

You'll no doubt notice a theme for Game 3, which is that bettors and fans alike should expect plenty of scoring. The Hurricanes will aim to clean things up defensively, but are almost certain to come out swinging against a Boston team that has been unstoppable over the first two games. And these teams love their third-period scoring: Five of Carolina's last nine games have featured three or more third-period goals, while Boston has seen an average of 3.6 third-period tallies in its last five. Think big with this one.

                      PREDICTION: 3+ third-period goals (+195)

                      TEAM/PLAYER BET

Going all-in on a high-scoring game allows for access to extra props; in this case, since we believe at least one of these teams will produce three or more goals, it's just a matter of determining which team gets there first. Carolina has won four consecutive playoff games at home, each of the last three by identical 5-2 scores. And while this one might a more closely-contested affair given how well the Bruins are playing, we like the team averaging 4.4 goals per game at home to win a race to three.

PREDICTION: Race to 3 goals: Carolina (+135)

                      FULL-GAME TOTAL

Do we really need a full write-up here? Perhaps not – but it's certainly worth sharing a few other tidbits that could make the Over a great option for Game 3. Carolina has now finished above the total in seven of its previous nine playoff games, averaging 7.25 total goals in its past four. And the teams have been on an incredible run of high-scoring affairs, producing seven or more goals in eight of their past nine meetings. This could very well be a totals trap – but we don't think so.

                      PREDICTION: Over 5.5 (+100)

                      FULL-GAME SIDE

If there is one positive to be taken from that Game 2 shellacking, it's that the Hurricanes limited Boston to 25 shots. And while it didn't matter in terms of the final outcome, it suggests that better goaltending will go a long way in helping Carolina get back into the series. Boston is allowing just two goals per game on the road in the postseason, but PNC Arena has been fantastically hostile for opposing teams – and we don't see the Hurricanes rolling over just yet. We like the home side to prevail.

                      PREDICTION: Carolina -120

                        • Bruins edge 'Canes, take 3-0 series lead

                          ShareFacebookTwitterDiggMySpace

RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) Chris Wagner and Brad Marchand scored 5:07 apart in the second period, and the Boston Bruins beat the Carolina Hurricanes 2-1 on Tuesday night to take a 3-0 lead in the Eastern Conference final.

Tuukka Rask stopped 35 shots for the Bruins, who have won six straight postseason games for the first time since 1978. They are one victory away from their third Stanley Cup Final appearance in nine years.

Boston will go for the sweep on Thursday night.

Calvin de Haan scored and Curtis McElhinney made 29 saves for the Hurricanes while starting in place of Petr Mrazek, who allowed 10 goals in the first two games of the series.

But it wasn't enough to keep alive Carolina's postseason perfection at home - where a pig named Hamilton looks on from behind the corner boards.

Now they're in an unenviable spot. Only four teams in NHL history have ever rallied to win a series they trailed 3-0, and none since Los Angeles in 2014 - though Carolina captain Justin Williams was on that Kings team that rallied to beat San Jose in the first round.

This one got away from them in the first 7 1/2 minutes of the second, when the Bruins claimed control with their fourth line turning a turnover by Carolina's Brock McGinn into a 1-0 lead at 1:21.

Sean Kuraly collected the puck and passed low to Joakim Nordstrom, with the former Hurricane then finding Wagner alone in front for a tap-in.

The Bruins entered with the NHL's best postseason power-play unit - converting on a full third of their chances in the playoffs - and they were 1 of 5 with the man advantage against a Carolina penalty kill that began with a sub-50% success rate in this series.

But that one goal was a significant one.

With 19 seconds left on a high-sticking minor on Nino Niederreiter, Marchand put Boston up 2-0 when his shot from between the circles trickled past McElhinney.

It loomed large because the Hurricanes pulled within a goal when de Haan's slap shot off a draw got through Rask's pads for the defenseman's first goal since Nov. 8.

The Bruins thought Torey Krug had an insurance goal with 15:45 left in the third, but the officials ruled Jake DeBrusk interfered with McElhinney - a decision that was confirmed after Boston's challenge led to a review in Toronto.

That seemed like a significant development.

Rask made sure it ultimately wasn't.

After stopping 20 shots in the first period alone - and becoming the first Boston goaltender since Tim Thomas in 2011 with that many in a postseason period - he remained difficult for the Hurricanes to figure out. Thwarting perhaps their best chance to tie it, Rask stuffed a slick power-play redirection by Jordan Staal with just under 13 minutes left.

This one was chippy throughout, with 14 penalties - 10 in the first period alone. That includes six by Boston and three by Williams, who also took his team's only two penalties in a 6-2 loss in Game 2.

NOTES: Carolina scratched LW Jordan Martinook, who has been dealing with a nagging lower-body injury. ... The Bruins improved to 5-1 this season against Carolina.

                              Wednesday’s List of 13: Mid-week musings…..

                              13) New Orleans wins the draft lottery; does that mean Anthony Davis will want to stay with the Pelicans? Memphis got the #2 pick, Knicks #3, Lakers #4.

                              12) What would it be like if they did the lottery just before the start of the draft in June? Make people think on their feet.

6:30 lottery, draft starts at 7:00. Would be better than jamming it in before the start of a playoff game on the other side of the country.

                              11) Seeing Patrick Ewing at the lottery reminds me that I saw him watching Zion Williamson play at an adidas tournament in Las Vegas two summers ago. Tons of kids there; Ewing gets up to go to the concession stand, and not one kid asks him for an autograph or says anything to him. One of the 50 greatest players ever, 7-feet tall, and he got as much attention there as I did.

                              10) New Jersey took in $313.7M in bets in April, according to numbers released Tuesday by the state’s Department of Gaming Enforcement. 81% of those bets were made via a mobile betting app.

Meanwhile, across the river in New York State………nothing, zero, bupkis.

                              9) Warriors 116, Trailblazers 94— Lillard/McCollum combined to shoot 11-31 from the floor. Would be odd if Golden State swept its way to another title and Durant never came back to play.

                              8) Rockies 5, Red Sox 4 (11)— Colorado batters struck out 24 times in this game, while receiving only two walks. Home plate ump Dan Bellino didn’t win many friends in the Rockies’ dugout.

Chris Sale struck out 17 but didn’t get the win; he is the first pitcher since Randy Johnson in 2001 to strike out 17+ and not win- Johnson had 20 strikeouts for Arizona that night.

Colorado is third team ever to strike out 24+ times and win; the other two:
                              June 2, 2018: Cubs beat the Mets (24 K in 14 innings)
                              June 8, 2004: Brewers beat the Angels (26 K in 17 innings)

                              7) Baseball stuff:
                              — Brewers put 3B Travis Shaw (wrist) on IL, promote 2B Keston Hiura.
                              — Dodgers’ P Julio Urias was arrested Monday on suspicion of domestic battery.
                              — A’s traded Kendrys Morales to Bronx for cash or a player to be named later.

                              6) Four teams left in the Hard Knocks sweepstakes: Lions, Giants, Raiders, Redskins. You figure the Raiders are 2020’s team, with the move to Las Vegas and all, so they’re out, too.

                              5) The Oakland-Alameda County Coliseum is about to become the Ring Central Coliseum; they signed a 3-year deal at $1M a year for naming rights.

                              4) College basketball transfer portal:
                              — PG Elijah Mitrou-Long bolts from Texas to UNLV.
                              — Justice Kithcart bolts from Old Dominion to Nicholls State.

                              3) If you don’t living in this country is an honor, keep this in mind: the S Sport TV station in Turkey will not televise the Blazers-Warriors playoff series because of Enes Kanter’s history of criticizing Turkey’s government. Kanter plays for Portland.

Living in a democracy is a good thing; we need to make sure it stays that way.

                              2) In a related story, if Portland-Toronto play in the NBA Finals, will Kanter go to the games in Toronto? Pretty sure Kanter skipped a regular season game in Toronto in March, fearing for his safety outside of America.

Kanter had his Turkish passport revoked in 2017 and has had a warrant out for his arrest in Turkey since January. Turkey also reportedly seeks an Interpol red notice for Kanter, which could result in him being detained and deported back to his home country.

                              1) RIP to the great comic Tim Conway, who passed away Tuesday at age 85. He was on McHale’s Navy and the Carol Burnett Show. just a really funny guy. RIP, sir.
