  • Preview: Ducks (46-23) at Oilers (47-26)
    Date: May 07, 2017 7:00 PM EDT

EDMONTON, Alberta -- In Game 5 on Friday night with less than four minutes left, the Edmonton Oilers led the Anaheim Ducks 3-0. The Ducks mounted an epic comeback to win 4-3 in overtime and take a 3-2 lead in the Western Conference semifinal series.

That's not the first time the Oilers have lost a lead. After two games in the series, Edmonton was up 2-0 after winning twice on the road. But Anaheim came back to win the next two games in Edmonton, including a Game 4 rally from two goals down.

Now the question for a young, inexperienced Oilers team is do they mentally recover for Sunday's Game 6.

The Oilers need to win to extend the series to Game 7. Lose and the Ducks advance to the Western Conference final.

MVP finalist Connor McDavid, who had a goal and an assist in the Oilers' Game 5 loss, showed a bit of defiance after the collapse.

"It sucks, but we'll be back here (in Anaheim for Game 7) Wednesday," he said.

"We're all (ticked) off, we're down, we're allowed to feel those emotions right now," Oilers coach Todd McLellan said. "We're allowed to vent and feel that way. But we've got to come back with a game that's that much better at home. We can do that. We believe we can play with this team since day one."

In Edmonton, the focus was on two video reviews that both went the Ducks' way. Both calls have been hot topics on social media and talk radio. There is even talk about anti-Canadian conspiracies and pro-Anaheim refereeing. (A Canadian team hasn't won the Stanley Cup since 1993.)

In Game 4, the comeback was spurred when Ryan Getzlaf scored as teammate Corey Perry made contact with the skate of Oilers goalie Cam Talbot. The NHL allowed the goal to stand, ruling that the contact was incidental and didn't prevent the goalie from stopping the puck.

In Game 5, Rickard Rakell's late tying goal came as Ryan Kesler's arm looked to be hooked on Talbot's pad. But the league ruled that Kesler was in the crease because he was knocked in by Oilers defenseman Darnell Nurse.

But that's all history now. Those controversial calls may have confirmed a couple of key goals, but they were both only parts of major comebacks by the Ducks.

The truth is, the Oilers have had the Ducks by the neck several times -- up two games to none, up 2-0 in Game 4, up 3-0 in Game 5 -- and each time showed their inexperience and inability to close a team out.

Ducks captain Ryan Getzlaf, who has 15 points in nine playoffs games, said it wasn't so much about his team getting off to slow starts and needing to scramble back. It's about a team that has kept its intensity high and doesn't get breaks early but keeps the effort going.

"The message is, to keep doing what we're doing," Getzlaf said. "We talk about the same things every time, our group is resilient and we have to be able to maintain things throughout a game."

Remember that the Ducks were down 4-0 to the Calgary Flames in the Game 3 of the first round, so it's fair to call them the comeback kings of this year's playoffs.

The Oilers have to know that -- with the leads they've had through this series, with the chances they've had to win games -- if they lose Game 6 at home and their season comes to an end, they'll have to live with the "Atlanta Falcons of the NHL" tag all summer long.

Knowing that, the Ducks expect a big pushback.

"It's a great achievement for our players and we should feel good about ourselves," Ducks coach Randy Carlyle said of the comeback. "But the next one will be the most important one, the toughest one, in their building."

On Saturday, McLellan said he had no update on the condition of defenseman Andrej Sekera, who left in the first period of Game 5 after taking a clean hit from Getzlaf.

Ducks winger Patrick Eaves, who has missed the last two games with a lower-body injury, and defenseman Kevin Bieksa, who has missed the last three, are question marks.

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) Ryan Johansen scored the game-winning goal 3:15 into the third period, and the Nashville Predators advanced to their first Western Conference final in franchise history Sunday by beating the St. Louis Blues 3-1 to take the series in six games.

The Predators won their ninth straight playoff game in Nashville going back to last postseason.

Goalie Pekka Rinne made 23 saves and had an assist. Roman Josi had a goal and an assist, and Calle Jarnkrok added an empty-netter with 60 seconds left.

Nashville will play either Anaheim or Edmonton.

Paul Stastny scored for St. Louis, which fell short of a second straight conference final.

        OILERS 7, DUCKS 1

EDMONTON, Alberta (AP) - Leon Draisaitl had three goals and two assists, Mark Letestu added two goals and two assists, and Edmonton cruised past Anaheim to force a decisive Game 7 in their Western Conference semifinal series.

Zach Kassian and Anton Slepychev also scored and Cam Talbot stopped 34 shots for the Oilers, who led 5-0 after the first period.

Rickard Rakell scored midway through the second period for Anaheim. John Gibson was pulled after giving up three goals on six shots less than 8 1/2 minutes into the game. Jonathan Bernier came on and finished with 25 saves.

Game 7 is Wednesday night at Anaheim, with the winner advancing to face the Nashville Predators in the conference finals.

          25-1: Nevada
          30-1: UNLV
50-1: Fresno State, San Jose State

          **********

Armadillo: Monday's List of 13: Wrapping up a sports weekend

          13) Rough times for the Mets; Matz/Syndergaard are injured pitchers, Cespedes is on the DL and now struggling pitcher Matt Harvey was suspended for three days, for what sounds like an accumulation of actions, dating back to last year.

Harvey was sent home Sunday after he didn’t show up Saturday; Mets started Adam Wilk, a non-roster pitcher who has a 5.69 ERA in AAA- he got pounded by Miami. Tough times for Terry Collins, in the final year of his contract as manager.

          12) Watching Wilk pitch to Giancarlo Stanton, you wonder if Stanton would want to hire Wilk as his pitcher for Home Run Derby at the All-Star Game in July, in Miami.

          11) ESPN had the Bronx Bombers on last nite, has them on again at home next week against Houston, their 3rd Sunday nite game in five weeks. Five of their first seven Sunday night telecasts will be from NYC or Boston. Awesome.

          10) Wizards 121, Celtics 102- Washington had a 26-0 run in third quarter; why do they play so much better at home than on the road?

          9) Seattle Mariners have already used 20 pitchers this season; that’s hard to believe. They lost two pitchers to injury in a 3-pitch stretch in extra innings Friday night.

          8) Bad teams are also often unlucky teams; Brandon McCarthy tweaked his back or something lifting weights, so his start was changed from Saturday to Sunday and Clayton Kershaw was moved up to pitch Saturday against the Padres.

Just San Diego’s luck; they get rained out at home Sunday for only the third time in Petco Park history, meaning that they would’ve missed facing Kershaw had McCarthy not gotten hurt.

          7) A’s 8, Tigers 6—Before Saturday, Oakland was only MLB team that hadn’t won a game where the GW run scored after the 6th inning- then they had walk-off wins both Saturday/Sunday, making my house a happier place.

Yonder Alonso has been a big leaguer for 8 years; his career high in homers is 9, in 2012 with San Diego. Alonso hit his 9th homer this year on Sunday- May 7. He’s been a very good player in his 1+ seasons in Oakland.

          6) John Daly won on the Senior Tour Sunday, his first tournament win in 13 years. Someone should make a movie on his life—I’m guessing it would be entertaining. I’m also guessing his travelling party had a lot of fun last night.

          5) I find this surprising: Leonardo DiCaprio’s character died in nine of his first 36 movies.

          4) Edmonton led Anaheim 5-0 after the first period Sunday, coasted to an easy 7-1 Game 6 win. Not a stellar effort by the Ducks; very few NHL games are ever 5-0 in the first period.

          3) Bryce Harper, Mike Trout both have minor leg injuries; Harper didn’t play all weekend. Trout missed three of the Angels’ last four games.

          2) Rockets 125, Spurs 104—Not lot of fun games to watch in these playoffs. At least this series is 2-2, like Celtics-Wizards. Just no close games.

          1) San Francisco Giants were outscored 31-5 in three games against the (first place) Reds this weekend, then their team bus broke down on the way to the airport Sunday. At 11-21, been a rough spring for Bruce Bochy’s ballclub.

            • Monday’s Stanley Cup Playoffs betting preview: Capitals at Penguins

Ovechkin's detractors appear to come out en masse during the postseason due in large part because the three-time Hart Trophy winner has yet to guide the Capitals past the second round.

Washington Capitals at Pittsburgh Penguins (-125, 5.5)

              Pens lead series 3-2

Alex Ovechkin's detractors appear to come out en masse during the postseason due in large part because the three-time Hart Trophy winner has yet to guide the Washington Capitals past the second round. After recording his 10th goal and 20th point in 19 contests in which the Capitals face elimination, Ovechkin looks to temporarily quiet the critics once again on Monday when his team visits the Pittsburgh Penguins in Game 6 of their series.

"We're still down. We take good moments in the game (Saturday) and move forward," said Ovechkin, who capped Washington's three-goal third period in Saturday's 4-2 triumph with his eighth point (five goals, three assists) of the playoffs. While the 31-year-old Russian has been impressive versus Pittsburgh with 26 points (12 goals, 14 assists) in 18 career postseason games, the Penguins have enjoyed the last laugh by winning seven of the previous eight series - and going on to capture the Stanley Cup after the last two (2009, 2016). Pittsburgh coach Mike Sullivan isn't interested in history, whether it dates back to last season's second-round series versus Washington - the Penguins won in six games, by the way - or the events of Saturday's Game 5. "We have to have a short memory," Sullivan said. "We just have to reset our mindset and go home and try to put our very best on the ice."

TV: 7:30 p.m. ET, NBC Sports Network, CBC, TVAS

LINE HISTORY: The Penguins opened as -120 home favorites for this crucial Game 6 and that moneyline bumped up slightly on Sunday evening to -125. The total opened at 5.5.

              INJURY REPORT:

Capitals - No injuries to report.

Penguins - D C. Ruhwedel (Out Indefinitely, upper body), G M. Murray (Out Indefinitely, lower body), D K. Letang (Out For Season, neck).

ABOUT THE CAPITALS (61-22-5-5, 41-37 O/U): While Ovechkin often gets the headlines, countryman Evgeny Kuznetsov continues to be one of the main stories of this series after scoring a goal in each of the past three games to tie Nicklas Backstrom and Ovechkin for the team lead with five. The affable 24-year-old Russian is often one to make outlandish statements, too, but played it close to the vest with reporters when he shared the team's mindset. "We talked about winning (Game 5) and then going to Pittsburgh and win another game," Kuznetsov said. "Now we have to focus on the second game. We can't think about Game 7. We just focus on Game 6 right now."

ABOUT THE PENGUINS (57-23-7-5, 52-35 O/U): Captain Sidney Crosby and fellow forward Conor Sheary returned on Saturday from respective one-game absences due to a concussion, with the former notching his franchise high-tying 96th assist for his 12th point (four goals, eight assists) in nine playoff contests in 2017. Crosby told reporters that his team needs to focus on puck possession as a means to overcome a huge shot discrepancy in the series (Washington leads 174-115). "I would say just a little bit more zone time," the two-time Hart Trophy finalist said. "If we can hold onto the puck a little bit more, we should get more shots. I think we'll generate a little bit more from that."

              TRENDS:

              * Capitals are 4-10 in their last 14 Conference Semifinals games.
              * Penguins are 22-6 in their last 28 home games vs. a team with a winning road record.
              * Under is 4-0 in Capitals last 4 games following a win.
              * Under is 6-1-1 in Penguins last 8 home games.
              * Capitals are 1-7 in the last 8 meetings in Pittsburgh.

              • Preview: Capitals (55-19) at Penguins (50-21)
                Date: May 08, 2017 7:30 PM EDT

PITTSBURGH -- There is momentum -- the Washington Capitals are coming off of a 4-2 win Saturday against the Pittsburgh Penguins to remain alive in an Eastern Conference semifinal playoff series.

Then there is reality -- the Capitals trail the series 3-2 and again will face elimination when the teams meet Monday in Game 6 at PPG Paints Arena.

"All it's going to take is all we have, and all we have is our leadership, the 20 players we dress. They're going to have to be all in," Washington coach Barry Trotz said Sunday during a conference call with reporters.

If the Capitals get that and it translates to a win, it earns them a winner-take-call Game 7 back in Washington on Wednesday.

Evgeny Kuznetsov, who scored his fourth goal of the series in Game 5 and has a career-high eight points in these playoffs, said Game 7 hasn't been on the Capitals' radar since then fell to the brink of elimination at 3-1.

"We talked about winning the first game and then going to Pittsburgh and win another game," he said. "Now we have to focus on the second game. We can't think about Game 7. We just focus on Game 6 right now."

Alex Ovechkin scored one of three third-period goals in Game 5 as Washington erased a one-goal deficit to pull off a comeback win at Verizon Center.

A nice accomplishment, but Ovechkin considers it just one step in the Presidents' Trophy club's mission.

"We're still down," said Ovechkin, who has 12 goals, 26 points in 18 career playoff games against the Penguins, including two goals, five points this series.

"We take good moments in the game (Saturday) and move forward."

The Penguins, who are 4-1 at home this postseason, share a mantra as they look to eliminate Washington in six games for the second spring in a row.

"We just have to have a short memory and get back for Game 6," Penguins defenseman Brian Dumoulin said. "We just need to get the job done and learn from these (games)."

Coach Mike Sullivan agreed nearly word for word.

"We've got to have a short memory," Sullivan said. "We've got to reset our mindset and go home and try to put our very best on the ice."

The Penguins' best likely would include more scoring chances.

Despite being ahead in the series, Pittsburgh has been outshot in every game, by an average of 34.8 to 23. In all but Game 3, the Capitals have had at least 10 more shots than the Penguins.

Pittsburgh center Sidney Crosby, who unexpectedly returned from a concussion to play in Game 5 on Saturday, believes rectifying that will take a better job of puck possession.

"I would say just a little bit more zone time," he said. "If we can hold onto the puck a little bit more, we should get more shots. I think we'll generate a little bit more from that. Just being a little bit better in the offensive zone."

Pittsburgh defenseman Trevor Daley apparently was the only player who got hurt in Game 5. There has been no update on the nature of his problem or his status for Game 6.

                Neither team practiced Sunday.

                • Pressure on Caps, but spotlight n Fleury
                  May 7, 2017

Three goals in five minutes sparked sing-song chants of ''FLEU-RY! FLEU-RY!'' and might've planted enough of a seed of belief for the Washington Capitals against the Pittsburgh Penguins.

All series the Capitals had struggled to beat goaltender Marc-Andre Fleury, but he allowed four goals on 32 shots in the Penguins' Game 5 loss Saturday night in probably his worst performance of the playoffs.

Pittsburgh still leads the series 3-2 going home for Game 6 Monday night (7:30 p.m., NBCSN), so the pressure remains on Presidents' Trophy-winning Washington, but finally cracking Fleury could make all the difference.

''Some of the things that we're trying to do are starting to have an effect,'' coach Barry Trotz said on a conference call Sunday. ''It doesn't hurt the psyche, that's for sure, because I think it takes a little frustration out of your game if you finally crack through a little bit.

''We were sort of stuck in that two- and three-goal area and in a very important moment in the third period obviously in an important game, our guys delivered against him, so I think that gives us a boost of confidence.''

Fleury had stopped 133 of 142 shots through four games, making a mockery out of the core fundamental of hockey that having the puck more and putting it on net leads to success. He was the much hotter goaltender than reigning Vezina Trophy winner and again finalist Braden Holtby, who outdueled him in an emotional Game 5 as the Capitals avoided elimination.

''We're still down,'' captain Alex Ovechkin said. ''We take good moments of the game and move forward.''

The best moments were the times they got the puck past Fleury, the 2009 Stanley Cup winner who was Matt Murray's backup on the Penguins' title run a year ago and is only starting because of the 23-year-old's injury. If Fleury has sprung a leak, the Capitals have the talent from Ovechkin down to make him pay.

''He's been standing on his head this whole series,'' said Capitals winger Andre Burakovsky, who scored his first goal of the playoffs Saturday. ''We've been out-chancing them almost every game and he's been saving them. So he can't do that this whole series. If we keep just pounding pucks ... he's going to get tired.''

Trotz said he believes Fleury will continue to play well, and Penguins coach Mike Sullivan had no issues with the veteran's showing in Game 5.

''I thought he was solid,'' Sullivan said. ''He's made save after save for us. The goals they scored were good goals. I think we can do a better job in front of him.''

All series the Capitals have been aiming to play better in front of Holtby, who had his best game of the series Saturday in stopping 20 of 22 shots. For them to force Game 7 on Wednesday, they'll need Holtby and the rest of the stars to continue to be the best players on the ice.

''It doesn't matter, leaders or not leaders, top six, bottom six,'' said Evgeny Kuznetsov, who scored the Game 5 winner.

''We have to play all together like a team and we did (Saturday). We talk about win first game and then going to Pittsburgh and win another game. Now we have to focus on the second game, not think about the Game 7.''

                  CROSBY BACK:
Sidney Crosby played 19:10, the most among Penguins forwards, and had an assist in his return to the lineup five days after being concussed. He lamented some struggles for his line, but expressed no concerns about his health.

''I felt good,'' Crosby said. ''There were some chances there. We just missed. Some nights you just don't execute as well. I think there were some chances to be had there a few times and we just didn't execute.''

                  TURRIS TIME
: Ottawa Senators Game 5 star Kyle Turris became the seventh player in NHL history to score three overtime winners in his first 40 Stanley Cup playoff games. In beating the New York Rangers' Henrik Lundqvist to put Ottawa up 3-2 in the series, Turris joined Devin Setoguchi, Martin St. Louis, Niclas Wallin, Danny Gare, Rene Robert and Mel Hill in the record books and passed Daniel Alfredsson for the most in franchise history.

                  EXPERIENCED BLUESHIRTS:
New York is facing elimination for the first time in these playoffs on Tuesday at Madison Square Garden, and coach Alain Vigneault hopes the collective experience serves his team well.

''There's no doubt that for me experience, when you have it, is a good thing,'' Vigneault said on a conference call Sunday. ''This is going to be an opportunity for our team to respond and to play a strong game in a pressure situation.''

                  SUCCESS IN SMASHVILLE:
A 3-1 victory in Game 6 Sunday over the St. Louis Blues put the Nashville Predators in the Western Conference final for the first time in their 18-year franchise history. The Predators will face either the Anaheim Ducks or Edmonton Oilers for the right to come out of the West.

                  • History made clinching Western finals berth, Preds now rest
                    May 8, 2017

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) The Nashville Predators may have been the last team in the Western Conference this postseason. Now they're the NHL's first team to reach a conference final.

And the Predators believe they're only halfway through.

''The expectation is the Stanley Cup,'' Nashville defenseman P.K. Subban said. ''I think we took a big step (Sunday) and obviously for this organization and this city, but that's not our ultimate goal. Our ultimate goal is to win a Stanley Cup. We worked really hard to put ourselves in a good position. There's still a lot of hockey left to be played.''

The eighth-seeded team in the West, the Predators followed up a stunning sweep of the Chicago Blackhawks by ousting the St. Louis Blues in six games with a 3-1 victory Sunday. This is their first trip to the conference finals after falling short in the second round in their first three attempts, including a year ago to San Jose after pushing the Sharks to seven games.

''Right now, it means everything,'' Nashville goalie Pekka Rinne said. ''We haven't gotten further than this before. Obviously, it's a great feeling. There's a lot of work left. After this second round, there are only four teams left. We all know that we have what it takes and everything is in our hands. It's a good feeling. This is why you play this game. Right now, I'm pretty happy.''

The Predators, who began play in 1998, now are the NHL's only undefeated team at home this postseason with a nine-game winning streak dating to last season. Grammy winners Lady Antebellum sang the national anthem, the latest country stars to handle the honor.

''It's obviously a tough building,'' Blues goalie Jake Allen said. ''So whoever they play next is going to have their hands full.''

The Predators also are a league-best 8-2 with Rinne posting a 1.37 goals against average and .951 save percentage. He helped Nashville give up only one goal per game on home ice to St. Louis in this series. Rinne even posted his third assist of the postseason on Calle Jarnkrok's empty netter with a minute left that clinched their series against St. Louis.

''Pekks was unbelievable again,'' defenseman Roman Josi said. ''Probably every game, he was our best player and he was our best player again.''

Paul Stastny gave St. Louis a 1-0 lead scoring just 2:04 into Sunday's game. They wouldn't score again as Rinne finished with 23 saves.

The teams wound up tied at 1-1 after 40 minutes thanks to Josi scoring 35 seconds into the second period . That was the ninth goal by a Nashville defenseman this postseason, a franchise record. Predators defensemen have either scored or assisted on 16 of their last 18 goals.

Ryan Johansen, who had an assist on Josi's goal, scored the game-winner on a 2-on-1 after skating up the slot and beating Allen with a backhander off a pass from Viktor Arvidsson at 3:15 of the third. Only Allen kept the Predators from padding that lead with save after save, including a big stop on a breakaway by Filip Forsberg.

Johansen's goal was a big score from Nashville's top line, which had been held to just three points in the series with St. Louis. Forsberg got the play started, and it was just Johansen's second goal this postseason.

''Joey's our No. 1 center, he's our most important guy and every time he's going, the team's playing well,'' Nashville coach Peter Laviolette said.

After Johansen's goal, a sold-out crowd took every chance to stand up and stayed there for the final minutes to celebrate franchise history.

''You take a look into the crowd, everyone's on their feet for the entire game, and the atmosphere that the fans bring for us is unbelievable,'' defenseman Ryan Ellis said . ''Standing ovations at every whistle almost. It was an exciting game, an exciting series, and now we're on to the next one.''

That will be either Anaheim or Edmonton, but the Predators will get some rest before the conference finals because the Ducks and Oilers will play a deciding seventh game Wednesday night.

''I feel like right now, we can do some damage,'' Rinne said.

                    • Penguins' Crosby passes concussion test
                      May 6, 2017

WASHINGTON (AP) Sidney Crosby returned to the Pittsburgh Penguins' lineup for Game 5 against the Washington Capitals after missing the previous game with a concussion.

Crosby is in the lineup five days after being concussed on a cross-check to the head by Matt Niskanen in Game 3. Coach Mike Sullivan said Saturday morning that Crosby had passed his concussion test and was considered a game-time decision.

Conor Sheary was also back after missing Game 4 with a concussion that came as a result of a collision with teammate Patric Hornqvist on Monday.

Pittsburgh leads the second-round series 3-1 and can eliminate Washington with a victory Saturday night. Sullivan said being up in the series didn't factor into the decision for Crosby or Sheary being available.

''We trust our doctors and the process that they go through, and when they tell us that these guys are healthy and are cleared to play, then that's all we need to know,'' Sullivan said after an optional morning skate. ''The health and safety of our players is always the priority and that will never change. But we trust our medical staff, we trust the doctors that are monitoring these guys.

''They know way more about it than the rest of us do. And so, we rely on those guys to monitor these situations and advise us the right way. So I think that's the most prudent way to approach it and that's how we are.''

Crosby has a history of concussions and missed the first six games this season. He skated in full gear Thursday and took part in a full-contact practice Friday, taking rushes with usual linemates Jake Guentzel and Hornqvist.

Crosby has two goals and two assists in parts of three games in this series. His 11 points on four goals and seven assists are tied for fifth among all players in the playoffs, and he led the NHL with 44 goals during the regular season.

''He does everything,'' winger Bryan Rust said. ''He is who he is for a reason, and he plays a full 200-foot game and that would help us all over the ice.''

The NHL's concussion protocol does not stipulate a certain amount of days a player must sit out after being diagnosed. Capitals coach Barry Trotz said Friday he wouldn't be surprised if Crosby was back for Game 5.

Sullivan said it's his experience that players respond to concussions in their own way.

''Some recover quicker than others, and I don't claim to know a whole lot about it and that's why we refer to the people that do,'' he said.

                        • Caps overwhelm Pens, force Game 7
                          May 8, 2017

PITTSBURGH (AP) The Washington Capitals are well aware of their franchise's inglorious past, one filled with unmet expectations and gut-wrenching collapses.

                          And they don't care. It's not 1992. It's not 1996, 2009 or 2016 for that matter.

The Capitals have spent the better part of the season insisting this time, things will be different. That they're not burdened by the weight of the team's history of playoff flameouts, one most of the guys in red, white and blue had nothing to do with.

Backed up to the precipice against a rival that's tormented them for decades, the Capitals finally punched back. Hard.

Andre Burakovsky scored twice, Nicklas Backstrom got his sixth of the playoffs and Washington beat the Pittsburgh Penguins 5-2 on Monday night to force a Game 7 in their seesaw Eastern Conference semifinal.

This is the fourth time the two teams will meet in a winner-take-all. The Penguins have won each of the previous three. Not that it bothers the Capitals.

''I haven't been here forever but, one, I've never been in a Game 7,'' said Washington forward T.J. Oshie, who opened the scoring with a first-period power-play goal . ''Two, I've never been past the second round. I know how much it would mean to me and I imagine it would be the same to every guy in this locker room.''

The Capitals are as close as they've been to their first appearance in the conference finals in 19 years after rallying from a 3-1 series deficit by sprinting by Pittsburgh in the third period at home in Game 5 and then delivering a masterful performance 48 hours later in a city that's often been a burial ground for once-promising seasons.

A year ago, Washington trailed Pittsburgh 3-1 in the second round, won Game 5 at home only to fall in overtime of Game 6. Intent on not repeating history yet again, the Capitals jumped on the defending Stanley Cup champions early and didn't relent until the things were well in hand and a once raucous arena was largely empty.

''Since Game 3 we've had a sense of calmness about what we're doing,'' Washington coach Barry Trotz said. ''We're having fun now. The fun part has been the obstacle.''

Jake Guentzel picked up his playoff-leading ninth goal and Evgeni Malkin added another 52 seconds later late in the third period to make the score look cosmetically better, but the Penguins were never in it. The Capitals controlled play throughout. Marc-Andre Fleury finished with 21 saves and received little help in front him.

''I think we were probably guilty of making a few mistakes early on and then probably chasing our mistakes after that,'' said Pittsburgh captain Sidney Crosby, who had an assist in 20 minutes but was largely a nonfactor in his second game back after missing Game 4 with a concussion.

Pittsburgh coach Mike Sullivan tinkered with his line combinations reuniting the ''HBK'' line (Carl Hagelin, Nick Bonino and Phil Kessel) that played an instrumental part in the team's Cup run last spring. Sullivan also moved rookie Guentzel alongside Malkin and put Conor Sheary with Crosby.

None of it worked as Washington pushed the Penguins around. Crosby took a nasty spill in the first period when he was slammed into the end boards head-first while he tangled with Carlson. He remained in the game but found little room to work.

Then again, neither did any of his teammates as Washington dominated.

Pittsburgh's first shot in the opening 17 minutes was a 136-foot flip by Brian Dumoulin that made its way to Braden Holtby, who easily stopped it for the first of his 16 saves. By then the Capitals already had a 1-0 lead on Oshie's fourth of the playoffs.

It wasn't unlike most of the first four games of the series, when Washington would control play for long stretches only to have Pittsburgh expertly counter on its way to a 3-1 advantage.

This time, there would be no response by the Penguins.

Pittsburgh had trouble executing even the simplest of plays. Defenseman Ron Hainsey went to boards to retrieve a loose puck in the Penguins end only to get checked by Burakovsky, who skated away with the puck and stuffed a shot past Fleury 6:36 into the second .

Holding two-goal leads in the postseason has been a tenuous proposition at best, with 13 times teams letting them away so far in the postseason.

Yet instead of simply trying to protect its advantage, Washington kept pressing. Backstrom flipped a wrist shot by Fleury 16 seconds into the third to make it 3-0 and when John Carlson fired one past Fleury 11:17 into the third, the arena began emptying out.

It was a sweet moment for the Capitals, but they're aware an even more blissful one awaits if they can duplicate their performance on Wednesday.

''We're going to have to be better,'' Oshie said. ''We're going to have to push them out. That's going to be a tough task but I think it's something we have the right guys and the right mentality right now to do that.''

NOTES: Penguins D Trevor Daley did not play after getting hit by Washington's Tom Wilson in Game 5. Chad Ruhwedel filled in. ... Washington went 2 for 4 on the power play. The Penguins were 0 for 3.

Armadillo: Tuesday's List of 13: Nobody asked me, but……

                            13) New York-Chicago played an epic 18-inning game on Sunday Night Baseball; games like this are what baseball unique- lot of odd decisions have to be made and it tests the mental toughness of the players. Excellent theater.

Of course, in today’s softening society, some people want there to be tie games in baseball. Everyone is entitled to their opinion, no matter how wrong it is.

                            12) One thing that is really irritating; hearing someone who is getting paid to watch baseball complain that a game went extra innings. You have a cushy job; too bad there is a small bit of inconvenience involved. If you quit your job, I’m guessing a ton of people would wait outside in a snowstorm to take your place.

                            11) 583 pitches in the game; umpire Joe West is 64 years old. Hope he has today off. He basically umpired a doubleheader behind the plate Sunday night.

                            10) Interesting stuff on the Interweb about Kansas State football and succession plans for 77-year old coach Bill Snyder, who battled throat cancer this past winter.

Snyder is an icon in Manhattan, KS—it is hard to describe how pathetic Kansas State was before he became coach. Barry Switzer’s Oklahoma teams used to beat K-State 64-3 without breaking a sweat, but Snyder made the Wildcats winners and he carries a lot of influence- he wants his son Sean to take his place as head coach.

Others have resisted this succession plan, but some of those others have moved on to other jobs. It appears as if Snyder will get his way and his son will succeed him, but the real question will be, can Sean Snyder succeed as his dad’s successor?

                            9) In France, they hold elections on weekends and get a higher voter turnout than we do in this country.

                            8) Mets are so spineless they pushed back Matt Harvey’s next start until Friday in Milwaukee- they don’t want him starting at home right away. Hell, part of his punishment should be having to pitch in front of the home fans, who will give him the grief he deserves if he doesn’t do well.

If Harvey pitched well, the home fans would love him, no doubt.

                            7) Cincinnati Reds in first place after five weeks of baseball? Surprising.

                            6) Patrick Ewing is going to be an interesting study as the new basketball coach at Georgetown- the Hoyas picked up a grad transfer this weekend from South Dakota (43.8% inside arc, 31.6% outside arc), a team that won the Summit League regular season title- Monday they offered a 9th grader (Class of 2020) from Washington DC a scholarship.

                            5) Red Sox scored a total of 15 runs in Chris Sale’s first six starts; they scored 17 in his 7th start, Sunday in Minnesota.

                            4) If Kyle Lowry stays with the Toronto Raptors, they can offer him a contract worth $205M for five years; if he goes elsewhere, he can get $152M for four years. I’m not sure of the tax implications of playing in Canada, but it sounds like he would be forfeiting a lot of cash if he chooses to leave Toronto.

                            3) Average attendance at all minor league baseball games in April: 3,986, best-ever for April. Owning a minor league team is a solid investment.

                            2) Former New Mexico/Ole Miss guard Cullen Neal will be a grad transfer at St Mary’s next year; Neal was headed to St Mary’s out of high school, but then Steve Alford got the UCLA head coaching job and his dad Craig Neal inherited the Lobos’ job, so Cullen stayed in Albuquerque and played two years, but the fans were tough on him when the team struggled, so Cullen transferred to Ole Miss. Craig got fired this past spring.

                            1) This from Jon Heyman of FanRag Sports, on the Matt Harvey story:

                              • Tuesday’s Stanley Cup Playoffs betting preview: Senators at Rangers

The Rangers, who sustained a double-overtime loss in Game 2, suffered a similar fate in Game 5 - falling in one extra session to find themselves on the verge of elimination.

Ottawa Senators at New York Rangers (-170, 5)

                                Sens lead series 3-2

The New York Rangers find themselves in a familiar position, only their postseason hangs in the balance this time around. New York attempts to send its Eastern Conference second-round series to the limit when it hosts the Ottawa Senators for Game 6 on Tuesday.

The Rangers, who squandered a lead and sustained a double-overtime loss in Game 2, suffered a similar fate in Game 5 - falling in one extra session to find themselves on the verge of elimination. Kyle Turris scored at 6:28 of overtime to put Ottawa one victory away from reaching the conference final for the third time in franchise history and first since 2007, when it went on to land in the Stanley Cup Final. New York is hoping a different trend continues as the home team has won each of the first five games in the series. The Rangers, who have scored the first goal in every game of the series thus far, posted a pair of 4-1 triumphs in their own building while the Senators have recorded three one-goal victories on home ice.

TV: 7:30 p.m. ET, NBC Sports Network, CBC, TVAS

LINE HISTORY: The Rangers opened as -170 home favorites for this crucial Game 6 and that moneyline has yet to move. The total opened at 5.

                                INJURY REPORT:

Senators - D M. Borowiecki (Out Indefinitely, leg).

Rangers - No injuries to report.

ABOUT THE SENATORS (51-31-7-4, 36-50 O/U): Turris is proving to be a clutch postseason performer, as his goal in Game 5 was his third career playoff game-winner - with all three coming in overtime. Captain Erik Karlsson registered the first three-point performance of his playoff career with a trio of assists in Game 5. The 26-year-old Swede has scored a goal and set up 10 others this postseason, setting franchise records for most assists and points by a defenseman in one playoff year.

ABOUT THE RANGERS (54-30-5-4, 43-41 O/U): Captain Ryan McDonagh scored his 10th career playoff goal in Game 5, tying Barry Beck for fifth place on the franchise list among defensemen while becoming the sixth blue-liner in club history to reach double digits. Derek Stepan is riding a four-game point streak after notching an assist in Game 5 to tie Steve Vickers and Ron Greschner for sixth place on the franchise list with 49 career postseason points. Jimmy Vesey and defenseman Brady Skjei have each recorded five points this postseason, becoming the franchise's second rookie duo since 1986-87 to accomplish the feat (Jesper Fast and Kevin Hayes in 2015).

                                TRENDS:

                                * Senators are 1-4 in their last 5 games playing on 2 days rest.

                                * Under is 4-0-2 in Rangers last 6 home games.
                                * Home team is 7-0 in the last 7 meetings.
