  • Preview: Blues (46-29) at Predators (41-29)
    Date: May 02, 2017 9:30 PM EDT

By taking care of matters in their end of the ice, the Nashville Predators' defensive corps is earning the right to contribute to matters on the offensive end.

That was evident again on Sunday when the Predators bounced the St. Louis Blues, 3-1, in Game 3 of their Western Conference semifinal at Bridgestone Arena to grab a 2-1 series lead. Ryan Ellis scored the first goal while fellow defenseman Roman Josi tallied the final marker.

P.K. Subban and Mattias Ekholm each registered assists, giving the blue-liners a combined seven goals and 14 assists in seven playoff games. Ellis has scored in six straight games and leads Nashville scorers in the postseason with eight points off three goals and five assists.

St. Louis is well aware that in Game 4 Tuesday night, it will have to do a better job of accounting for the Predators' defensemen and their ability to produce points.

"We knew that was going to be a challenge walking into this series," Blues coach Mike Yeo said, "and obviously that's a part of our game we're going to have to be better at."

Subban dominated Game 1 with three point blasts, leading to a goal and two assists in Nashville's 4-3 win. Ellis produced a goal and a helper in Game 2, staking the Predators to a 2-1 lead before St. Louis rallied in the third period for a 3-2 decision.

Nashville's skill on the backline came to the forefront throughout Sunday's game. The Ellis-Josi pairing and the Ekholm-Subban duo combined for 20 shot attempts, with Josi firing eight times on net.

"If we get a chance as a D corps, there are a lot of guys who can skate and we try to join the rush and make something happen," Josi said.

The Blues need to keep things from happening. Better puck possession would be one way. The Predators won 39 of 63 faceoffs Sunday, the second time in the series they dominated St. Louis in the circle.

More discipline is a second avenue to success. After avoiding the penalty box in Game 2, aside from a coincidental minor in the third period, the Blues took a half-dozen minors on Sunday. Two occurred in the first 8 1/2 minutes of the second period when Nashville buzzed their zone at will.

"You're giving them and their skill players the opportunity to field the puck and make plays," St. Louis captain Alex Pietrangelo said. "They start to feel more confident. So I think that certainly makes a difference."

If the Blues can earn more possession time and keep penalties to a minimum, they could return to the formula that enabled them to control long stretches of Game 1 and 2 when playing 5-on-5. Any deviation from that, particularly against an opponent playing at its best with a raucous crowd behind it, is going to create issues.

And chances are those issues are going to come from Nashville's defensemen.

"The more you have the puck," Subban summed up, "the less defense you play."

          Wednesday’s List of 13: Mid-week musings……..

          13) Revisionist historians were out at the NFL Draft last weekend; Bill Walsh didn’t “find” Joe Montana in the 1979 draft, he didn’t even want the 49ers to take him. Seriously.

49ers had a scout named Tony Razzano who (along with former Denver coach John Ralston) wanted the Niners to draft Montana. Walsh wanted Steve Dils, whom he had coached at Stanford. The scouts won out and since then people have jostled for position to take credit for it.

49ers took Montana in the third round; Dils wound up getting selected by Minnesota in the 4th round, lasted 10 years in the NFL, starting only 27 games (10-17).

          12) A football fan in San Francisco paid $30,000 to sit in the 49ers’ draft room last weekend.

          11) A 3-star basketball recruit from Georgia was all set to sign with Eastern Kentucky, until Duke jumped in and offered the kid a scholarship, which the kid took.

Huh? Duke doesn’t pursue 3-star recruits, so what gives?

Well, current Blue Devil Frank Jackson hasn’t withdrawn from the NBA Draft yet, and Trevon Duval hasn’t decided where his six months of college will happen— if neither of those two guards plays at Duke next year, then Jordan Goldwire will find himself as Duke’s point guard.

If Jackson/Duval both attend Duke next year, then Goldwire will work hard in practice and never see the light of day in game situations that matter.

          10) So far this baseball season, Cubs’ starting pitchers have a 9.69 ERA in the first inning, which is very bad.

          9) Boston’s Chris Sale threw behind Manny Machado in the first inning last nite; both benches were warned. Machado later homered in the 7th inning off of Sale.

Orioles turned a triple play in the bottom of the 8th inning of a 5-2 Boston win.

          8) Miami’s Edinson Volquez allowed three runs in 4.1 IP last nite; he walked 8, struck out 9 in a Little League-like appearance. Of the 24 batters he faced, 17 walked/struck out. He is only the second pitcher in last 100 years to walk 7+ hitters, strike out 9+ and not finish the 5th inning- he left with a blister problem.

          7) Phillies’ pitcher Vince Velasquez has good potential; he struck out 16 Padres in an April game LY, but in order to help the Phillies, he has to get deeper into games.

Philly handed Velasquez a 7-0 lead in 2nd inning Monday, but he still lasted only five innings, throwing 98 pitches. That means the bullpen needed to get 12 outs in a game where they had a huge lead and should’ve been able to relax some.

Over the course of a long six-month season, bullpens need some down time.

          6) When he was 11-12 years old. Tampa Bay Rays’ P Alex Cobb was a spring training batboy for the Dodgers in Vero Beach. Sounds like a fun job for a kid.

          5) Looks like Valparaiso will be replacing Wichita State in the Missouri Valley Conference; there was some though that the league would add three teams (Omaha, Murray State were mentioned) to get o 12 teams.

          4) Indians’ ace Corey Kluber left last night’s game with back discomfort, bad news for Cleveland.

          3) ESPN fired Ed Werder even though his contract runs thru April 2019; how does this make any sense? The guy is really good at his job, you have to pay him for two more years anyway, and you still fire him? It makes you wonder what really is in play here.

          2) Nick Saban got a contract extension this week. From ESPN.com:

“Saban will receive a $4 million signing bonus and make $6.725 million in salary this year. He gets another $400,000 bonus for completing the season, bringing his total compensation for the year to $11.125 million. He has completion bonuses in each year of the contract, culminating in a $3.6 million payout after the 2021 season before going back down to $400,000 per year in subsequent seasons.”

Saban is the 2nd-highest paid college coach in the country, behind Jim Harbaugh.

1— The wife of talk show host Jimmy Kimmel gave birth to a little boy couple weeks ago; young man was born with some heart problems, but is doing better now. Kimmel started his show Monday nite with a monologue describing what happened and thanking all the people who helped. He had a list and read it, with lot of nurses/doctors’ names on it.

Kimmel is a wealthy guy, but what if it was my kid or yours? Could I afford that kind of health care? Could you? The baby has already had one heart operation; he’ll need two more before the problem is totally behind him.

One of Kimmel’s points in his monologue was this: No parent should have to decide whether he/she has enough money to save their child’s life. Good health care is for all Americans, not just the wealthy ones. Makes a lot of sense.

                • Wednesday’s NHL Stanley Cup Betting Preview and Odds

Sidney Crosby was in the midst of another memorable playoff run before a cross-check to the head has the Penguins' superstar in an all-to-familiar place: the NHL's concussion protocol.

Washington Capitals at Pittsburgh Penguins (+105, 5)

                  Pens lead series 2-1

ABOUT THE CAPITALS (60-21-5-5, 40-36 O/U): While a significant portion of the spotlight rests with Matt Niskanen and his role in Crosby's concussion, fellow defenseman Kevin Shattenkirk finally saw a positive light in the playoffs with his power-play goal 3:13 into overtime on Monday. The prized in-season acquisition had been called more derogatory names than most politicians after entering Game 3 with a league-worst minus-seven rating in eight playoff contests. Nicklas Backstrom has enjoyed more consistent success with a goal and an assist in back-to-back contests to give him a team-best 10 points (four goals, six assists) in nine games.

ABOUT THE PENGUINS (56-22-7-5, 51-34 O/U): Sidney Crosby was in the midst of another memorable playoff run before a cross-check to the head has the Penguins' transcendent superstar in an all-to-familiar place: the NHL's concussion protocol. The 29-year-old's history of concussions is well-chronicled, and the latest chapter was written after he was blasted early in the first period of Monday's 3-2 overtime loss by Washington defenseman and former Penguin Matt Niskanen. While Crosby remains the face of the league, fellow former Hart Trophy winner Evgeni Malkin leads the NHL with 15 points (four goals, 11 assists) in eight playoff games and is no stranger to picking up the slack in the absence of "Sid the Kid." "(Malkin) is an elite player. He has that ability," Sullivan said. "We're going to rely on him that much more, and we believe he'll get the job done for us. I don't think the burden falls on him solely." Fellow forward Phil Kessel is the next man up both figuratively and literally, as the 29-year-old's 12 points trail only Malkin in the league.

LINE HISTORY: The Penguins opened as -115 favorites however news of Crosby's confirmed absence sent bettors clamoring for the Capitals, dropping the Pens to +105 dogs. The total opened at 5.5 and was dropped to 5 without Crosby in the lineup.

                  INJURY REPORT:

Capitals - No injuries to report.

Penguins - LW C. Sheary (Questionable, concussion), D C. Ruhwedel (Questionable, upper body), C S. Crosby (Out, concussion), G M. Murray (Out Indefinitely, lower body), D K. Letang (Out For Season, neck).

                  TRENDS:

                  * Capitals are 6-1 in their last 7 road games.
                  * Penguins are 6-2 in their last 8 Conference Semifinals games.
                  * Under is 9-1-3 in Capitals last 13 vs. Metropolitan.
                  * Under is 4-1-1 in Penguins last 6 home games vs. a team with a winning road record.
                  * Capitals are 1-6 in the last 7 meetings in Pittsburgh.

Anaheim Ducks at Edmonton Oilers (-120, 5.5)

                  Oilers lead series 2-1

ABOUT THE DUCKS (51-25-10-3, 31-38 O/U): The Anaheim Ducks have made themselves at home in the relatively cool Alberta air this postseason, and the five-time reigning Pacific Division champions can breathe new life into their Western Conference second-round series should they continue that dominance in Wednesday's Game 4 against the Edmonton Oilers. The Ducks doused the Flames in both encounters in Calgary during the first-round series and improved to 3-0 in Alberta with Sunday's 6-3 triumph in Edmonton. Anaheim's walking wounded tag was taken to the extreme as forward Patrick Eaves was seen wearing a walking boot following Game 3 on the heels of a neutral-zone collision with former Duck Patrick Maroon in the third period. The 33-year-old Eaves joined defenseman Kevin Bieksa (lower body) in the stands during Tuesday's battle drills, with his availability to play in Game 4 depending greatly on if he's able to skate on Wednesday morning, coach Randy Carlyle said. Bieksa's status is much clearer as he will miss his third straight contest on Wednesday.

ABOUT THE OILERS (53-28-5-5, 36-46 O/U): Edmonton captain Connor McDavid schooled Ducks defenseman Sami Vatanen while scoring a highlight-reel goal in Game 3 for his second point in the series and sixth in the playoffs, but his minus-2 rating on Sunday shows that the 20-year-old still can learn a thing or two in the eyes of coach Todd McLellan. "He (McDavid) like everybody else is learning and we'll sit with him." Ryan Nugent-Hopkins finished the regular-season with nine points in his last nine games before seeing his offense dry up in the postseason. "I feel like I've had a lot of chances. ... I'm close, but I've got to find a way to take the next step." said the top overall pick of the 2011 draft , who was held off the scoresheet in the first round versus San Jose before notching an assist in the first two contests against Anaheim. Fellow former first-round pick Jordan Eberle is also struggling, setting up two goals in nine playoff games after recording six points (four goals, two assists) in his final four regular-season contests.

LINE HISTORY: The Oilers opened as -125 home favorites for Game 4 and that moneyline came down slightly to -120 by Tuesday evening. The total opened at 5.5 and will, most likely, not move off that number.

                  INJURY REPORT:

Ducks - RW P. Eaves (Doubtful, lower body), D K. Bieksa (Out Indefinitely, lower body), D S. Despres (Out Indefinitely, concussion), D C. Stoner (Out Indefinitely, abdominal).

Oilers - D A. Ference (Out For Season, hip), RW T. Pitlick (Out For Season, knee).

                  TRENDS:

                  * Ducks are 7-1 in their last 8 games following a win.
                  * Oilers are 11-2 in their last 13 home games.
                  * Under is 5-1-2 in Ducks last 8 games playing on 2 days rest.
                  * Under is 8-2-1 in Oilers last 11 games playing on 2 days rest.
                  * Ducks are 19-7 in the last 26 meetings in Edmonton.

                    • Preview: Capitals (55-19) at Penguins (50-21)
                      Date: May 03, 2017 7:30 PM EDT

PITTSBURGH -- The play has been debated and dissected. Now there is a diagnosis.

Pittsburgh Penguins captain and NHL star Sidney Crosby has a concussion after leaving Game 3 of an Eastern Conference semifinal against the Washington Capitals. Crosby will miss Game 4 Wednesday at PPG Paints Arena and then will be monitored per the league's concussion protocol.

There is no target date for Crosby's return, although Pittsburgh coach Mike Sullivan on Tuesday described Crosby as "very upbeat. He's very positive. We're very optimistic, and we're hopeful that we'll get him back in a timely fashion."

Monday's 3-2 overtime win got Washington back into the series, trailing 2-1.

"Right where we were last series (against Toronto)," defenseman Nate Schmidt said. "You're down 2-1 having a chance to win a Game 4 and go back home tied up, and go from there."

Whether Crosby, a finalist to win what would be his third Hart Trophy as league MVP, will suit up before the end of this round is unknown. Crosby has four goals and 11 points in eight games this postseason.

This is at least the third concussion for Crosby, who missed the first six games of the 2016-17 season because of one. Earlier, he missed half of 2010-11 and most of the following season because of concussion and neck problems.

Crosby wasn't the only Penguins player injured Monday. Winger Conor Sheary, who left after colliding with teammate Patric Hornqvist, also has a concussion.

Sheary skated separately before Pittsburgh held an optional practice Tuesday, but his timetable is as inexact as that of Crosby, who was at the team's practice facility but did not skate.

Sullivan declined to divulge lineup changes or revised matchups he might look for with those two players out.

"We have capable guys," Sullivan said. "We'll put combinations together that we feel will give us the best chance to win."

Two players who will be counted on to help fill the void are center Evgeni Malkin and winger Phil Kessel, who lead Pittsburgh -- and, going into Tuesday's games, the NHL -- with 15 and 12 points, respectively, this postseason.

"(Malkin) is an elite player. He has that ability," Sullivan said. "We're going to rely on him that much more, and we believe he'll get the job done for us. I don't think the burden falls on him solely. But (Malkin) is going to have to bring his very best game to help us win. Phil's the same way, and then it goes down the bench."

One player who will be available for Game 4 is Washington defenseman Matt Niskanen. He got a cross-checking major penalty and game misconduct for the play on which Crosby got hurt. Niskanen will not face supplemental discipline from the NHL.

"I thought it was the right decision," Capitals coach Barry Trotz said. "You had two forces coming across. ... That's hockey."

The play happened at 5:24 of the first period Monday. Crosby, going to the net on a two-on-one break, got thwarted by goaltender Braden Holtby. Near the crease, Crosby's left skate was clipped by the skate of Washington's Alex Ovechkin, who then appeared to slash Crosby in the back, only to have his stick bounce up and hit Crosby in the helmet.

Crosby struggled to regain his balance as he moved to his right, where he crumbled as he was met by a Niskanen cross-check to his face. While it looked as though Crosby's left leg bent awkwardly, Sullivan said the only injury is the concussion.

Even though Pittsburgh is known more for skill and speed than for tough, physical play, the Capitals are prepared to face a club fired up over losing Crosby.

"Yeah. I mean, it should be nasty. It's the playoffs," Washington center Jay Beagle said. "That's the way we like to play. That's the way they like to play. Hard hits. Going after each other. These are two teams that don't like each other.

"It's fun to play hard between the whistles. After the whistles, you never want to get a penalty. There were a couple of times the refs were warning us, both sides, and if you take a bad penalty and it's something after a whistle, that's when you've got to make sure emotions are in check."

The Penguins will be channeling some of their emotion toward playing a strong game in Crosby's absence.

"He's our leader," winger Carl Hagelin said. "We showed a lot of resilience last game. After he got hurt, we started playing with a lot of intensity, a lot of emotion. If he's not going to play next game, we'll play that one for him."

                      • Preview: Ducks (46-23) at Oilers (47-26)
                        Date: May 03, 2017 10:00 PM EDT

EDMONTON, Alberta -- An NHL team works hard all season long in order to secure as high a playoff seed as possible. A high seed, after all, means home-ice advantage.

But, this season, the question has to be: Why did so many teams even want home-ice advantage?

Throw away the color-coordinated shirts and pom-poms; turn the arena noise down to zero -- because winning on the road is what this year's playoffs are about.

Out of the first 53 playoffs games that have been completed this season, 30 have been won by the road teams.

And the Western Conference second-round series between the Oilers and Ducks is prime example of the home-ice curse. The Oilers won the first two games in Anaheim, and the Ducks roared back to win Game 3 at Rogers Place by a 6-3 count.

So, the Oilers will look to do in Game 4 what many teams have failed to accomplish in the 2017 playoffs -- overcome their home-ice disadvantage. The Ducks and Oilers meet again at Rogers Place on Wednesday night with Edmonton holding a 2-1 series advantage.

Oilers coach Todd McLellan said that his group of young players are only learning about the pressures that come with hosting playoff games. And he spoke Tuesday about what the team has to deal with when they are at home.

"It is a different animal, the playoffs are different," he said. "And we prepared a long time ago, before we even started, in managing life away from the rink, helping the players as much as we can. There are ticket demands, the media demands are much greater. Rest is important, so if you can't get rest at home because you might have twins up late at night, we have some rooms available for players. But we're not doing anything special, there's a lot of teams in the league are doing at as well."

The "twins" reference from the coach was a direct reference to goalie Cam Talbot; he and his wife welcomed new twins late last year. Talbot, who has logged more minutes in goal than any other NHL netminder in regular and postseason combined, was outstanding in the first two games of the series, but admitted he was at fault for many of the six goals allowed in Game 3.

Winger Jordan Eberle, who was placed on a line with Milan Lucic and Hart Trophy Nominee Connor McDavid midway through Game 3, said the Oilers gave the Ducks a lot of gifts, and need to clean that up Wednesday.

"A lot of it was us, it wasn't them," Eberle said. "We weren't crisp. We were making mistakes that caused us to chase the puck and basically do a bag skate, skating down and back. We worked on it today and we'll be better in Game 4."

While the Oilers were under the media microscope in Edmonton, the Ducks were in Kelowna B.C., on the second of a two-day retreat to get away from a place where the series is the only topic of discussion.

"This gives us the chance to get some bumps and bruises healed, both mentally and physically," Ducks coach Randy Carlyle said.

Ryan Kesler, who scored in the 6-3 win, told Ducks TV that it was important for the Ducks to get out of Edmonton.

"When you have the days off and you're able to go somewhere, obviously where we're staying is a beautiful resort, and be able to do different things and spend time together and get out the city you're playing in, it's good for the group," he said.

Getting away also allows the Ducks to get away from the prying eyes of the media. The Ducks have said defenseman Kevin Bieksa, who left with an injury in Game 2 and missed Game 3, will also miss Game 4. Right winger Patrick Eaves, who has a lower-body injury, didn't practice in Kelowna, and was seen in a walking boot. Had the team been in Edmonton, the Eaves watch would have been on red alert. But, getting away allows the team to be protective of its roster.

                              • Minus Crosby, Pens edge Caps to go up 3-1
                                May 3, 2017

PITTSBURGH (AP) Forget about revenge for the brutal cross-check that knocked Pittsburgh Penguins star Sidney Crosby out of the playoffs indefinitely.

Marc-Andre Fleury didn't want any part of it. The Pittsburgh Penguins goaltender came up with a more effective method of retribution against the Washington Capitals

''The best way to make them pay is winning,'' Fleury said.

Something the defending Stanley Cup champions keep doing no matter who is - and who isn't - in the lineup.

Fleury stopped 36 shots, rookie Jake Guentzel took advantage of a fortunate bounce for his playoff-leading eighth goal and Pittsburgh pushed Washington to the brink of elimination with a 3-2 victory in Game 4 on Wednesday night.

Game 5 is Saturday night in Washington.

Outplay and outshoot the Penguins all you want. Outscoring them is another matter entirely.

Patric Hornqvist provided the Penguins with an early boost and Justin Schultz's power-play goal just past the game's midway point was enough for Fleury to do the rest .

Rendered a backup most of the season behind Matt Murray, Fleury is now Pittsburgh's most vital player, one who seems to thrive in the face of Washington's incessant pressure.

''He's elevated his game at an important time,'' Penguins coach Mike Sullivan said. ''He's a competitive guy. He's a Stanley Cup-winning goaltender and I think he's showing it.''

Consider the Capitals believers. Washington has pumped 142 shots at Fleury through four games, nearly 50 more shots than the Penguins have managed the other way (93). And yet all those opportunities have translated into just one victory.

''We had good chances and we didn't bury them,'' Washington coach Barry Trotz said. ''Our backs are against the wall.''

Again. One more win by Pittsburgh and the Penguins will send the Presidents' Trophy winners home for the ninth time in 10 playoff meetings.

The Capitals insist it's not mental, though at times they were their own worst enemy. Guentzel's goal came when a crossing pass deflected off Washington defenseman Dmitry Orlov and by Braden Holtby .

Washington took seven penalties, including a high-sticking call against T.J. Oshie with less than two minutes left in regulation.

Oshie called it an ''amateur play,'' one symbolic of a night in which the Capitals failed to take advantage of a Penguins team missing Crosby, defenseman Kris Letang and forward Conor Sheary.

Alexander Ovechkin managed just two shots and Washington's power play went 0 for 4.

''I would say our top players didn't play as well as they need to be to be top players,'' Trotz said. ''They need to step up right now.''

Capitals center Jay Beagle believed things could get ''nasty'' as the series moved forward after Matt Niskanen's shot to Crosby's head early in Washington's Game 3 victory.

Pittsburgh's Phil Kessel countered that Beagle's assertion that Niskanen's shot was ''clean'' made Beagle ''an idiot.'' Beagle jokingly suggested the two work out their differences over a video game.

The nastiness never showed up. The ''Mario Kart'' showdown Beagle wanted will have to wait too.

Save for a scrap in the second period that amounted to little more than an extended wrestling match between Chris Kunitz and Tom Wilson - who made a run at Kunitz but missed - things stayed relatively tame.

An emotional and energetic start and a dash of luck allowed Pittsburgh to build a 2-0 lead. Hornqvist took a feed from Olli Maatta and beat a pair of Washington defenders to break in on Holtby. A flick of Hornqvist's wrists and the puck sailed over Holtby's glove and under the crossbar 4:39 into the first period to put the home team ahead for the first time in the series.

The Penguins' advantage doubled 3:51 into the second when Guentzel's cross to Matt Cullen instead ended up in the Washington net.

The Capitals tied it within a 72-second span later in the second. Justin Williams escaped a pair of Penguins on the boards and fed Evgeny Kuznetsov at the top of the circle for a wrist shot that zipped by Fleury.

Just over a minute later, Oshie's shot caromed off the end boards and straight to Nate Schmidt, who beat Fleury for the first playoff goal of his career.

Pittsburgh's power play, which struggled early in the series even with Crosby in the lineup, came through when a blast from Schultz 11:24 into the second put the Penguins back in front.

Fleury did the rest as he continued his renaissance with starter Matt Murray out indefinitely with a lower-body injury. Fleury withstood surge after surge and when his teammates finally found their legs late in the third period, Washington found itself on the brink of having another promising season end with a loss to their longtime rivals.

''Right now Game 7 is every game for us,'' Ovechkin said.

NOTES: Pittsburgh improved to 5-4 in the playoffs without Crosby during his career. ... Washington again went with seven defensemen in the lineup for a second straight game.
