  • Life of a goalie in Eastern playoff series is complicated
    April 28, 2017

WASHINGTON (AP) When the difference between winning and losing is a puck shot from behind the goal line that goes in off his helmet, all Henrik Lundqvist can do is shake his head.

Among the hundreds of decisions and 41 saves he made against the Ottawa Senators, the New York Rangers goaltender knew all anyone wanted to know was how that one crazy goal went in.

''That's the life of a goalie,'' Lundqvist said.

Life as a goaltender in the Eastern Conference during the second round of the playoffs is complicated, whether it's the matchup between Lundqvist and very capable Senators counterpart Craig Anderson or the Washington Capitals' reigning Vezina Trophy winner Braden Holtby against the Pittsburgh Penguins' Marc-Andre Fleury. The Senators and Penguins are each up in their respective series going into Saturday's Game 2s because of goaltending, with it taking on greater importance moving forward.

''If you don't have the goalies, it's hard to win,'' Capitals coach Barry Trotz said Friday. ''In a series there's going to be games where the difference is going to be the goalie on the other side is going to make one more save or your goalie is going to make one more save.''

One more save by Holtby on Sidney Crosby or Nick Bonino in Game 1 would've made a difference even considering his 18 other stops. Meanwhile Fleury stopped 33 of the 35 shots the Capitals put his way, including four without his stick during a mad scramble in the final minutes that he called ''fun.''

Fleury was at best the Penguins' 1B goalie this season after Matt Murray led them to the Stanley Cup last year, but so far he has looked very much like the goalie who won it for Pittsburgh in 2009.

''He's always been up for the task, making those big saves at big moments,'' veteran winger Chris Kunitz said. ''We have to do a better job for him and not give up those quality chances.''

The Capitals outshot the Penguins 35-21 in their 3-2 loss in Game 1, and though Trotz thought Holtby was fine, the Vezina finalist wanted two of those goals back.

''I know I need to be better if we're going to have success, and that's basically the bottom line,'' Holtby said.

Lundqvist knows that pressure all too well after making 21 saves in the first period alone Thursday and keeping the Rangers in Game 1 before Erik Karlsson's sharp-angle goal in the third. The Swedish star kicked himself for waiting and guessing too much on Ottawa's game-winner, but teammates weren't going to blame him for losing a 2-1 game.

''He was fantastic,'' center Derek Stepan said. ''We need him to be our best player, and he was phenomenal again.''

Only problem is, so was Anderson, who has phenomenal career numbers against New York and is 5-2 with a 1.81 goals-against average and .930 save percentage so far in these playoffs. Anderson's ability to stop breakaways sets him apart, and making the timely save is sometimes even more valuable than making a large quantity of them.

''He's made those huge saves on those breakaways, and he's made I think the keys save at the right time,'' said coach Guy Boucher, who believes his team must put 40-plus shots on Lundqvist every game to win. ''That's our goalie. He's done that. We know we've got a good goalie. We know we're playing against a good one, but we know we got a good one.''

    Some things to watch Saturday:

Rangers at Senators, Ottawa leads 1-0 (3 p.m. ET, NBC)

All eyes are on the crowd at Canadian Tire Centre after 16,744 fans - almost 2,000 below capacity - showed up for Game 1. Karlsson told Canadian TV network Sportsnet on Friday that he noticed the empty seats at what's believed to be the smallest Ottawa playoff crowd in 16 years.

Though the arena being a half-hour from downtown continues to be an issue, a Saturday afternoon puck drop for Game 2 should make a difference.

    ---

Penguins at Capitals, Pittsburgh leads 1-0 (8 p.m. ET, NBC)

Carl Hagelin could return to the Penguins' lineup after being out since mid-March with a lower-body injury. Coach Mike Sullivan called Hagelin a game-time decision after the speedy winger took part in a full-contact practice Friday and said he's feeling good.

''He brings that element of speed, his ability to stretch the ice, his pursuit game, forces turnovers all the time and we can create a lot of offense off of it,'' Sullivan said. ''He's a good penalty killer, he's a solid two-way player, so we can use him in a number of different capacities. But I think his speed certainly helps us play the type of game that we want to play and we're a more competitive team when he's in the lineup.''

Hagelin in means a tough call on who comes out, though Sullivan was critical of winger Conor Sheary's play the past couple of games.

      • Saturday’s six-pack

        — Clippers 98, Jazz 93— Game 7 is in Staples Center Sunday afternoon.

        — Boston eliminated the Bulls, Wizards ousted the Hawks, both on the road.

        — Blues 2, Predators 1— Nashville’s first loss in six playoff games this spring.

        — Oilers 2, Ducks 1— Edmonton wins first two series games, both on the road.

        — Arizona P Shelby Miller tore his UCL, is done for the year.

        — Larry Bird stepped down from running the Pacers Friday; playing the game and running a franchise are two different skills.

        ***********************

Saturday’s List of 13: Random stuff with the weekend here……..

        13) Apparently our politicians make a boatload of money; I’ve heard of three groups involved with buying the Miami Marlins— one includes Jeb Bush, one includes Ivanka Trump’s brother-in-law and another one involving Mitt Romney’s son.

Must be nice to be rich.

        12) Florida State’s Dalvin Cook finally got drafted by the Vikings with the #41 pick; apparently there are concerns about some of his friends, who he hangs out with.

With lot of players, the concerns aren’t about during the season, it is about the off-season, when their free time combined with having a lot of money can turn into problems. Hopefully things will work out of the best for Cook— he’s an excellent player.

From watching the Showtime show on Florida State football last fall, Cook also seemed like a good kid.

        11) With the #48 pick, the Bengals took Oklahoma RB Joe Mixon, who dropped in the draft because he broke his girlfriend’s jaw (on camera) three years ago. It was reported Friday nite that only four teams considered drafting Mixon.

        10) Chicago Bears beat the 49ers 26-6 last December, which is why they had the #3 pick, not the #2 pick in the draft. That win cost them two draft picks, the picks they sent to SF to switch spots Thursday night.

        9) Bronx 14, Baltimore 11 (10)— Orioles led 11-4 in the middle of the 7th inning. These teams are now tied for first place in the AL East.

        8) It is April 29 and the White Sox are in first place in the AL Central. Surprising.

        7) Mets are 9-13; Syndergaard is hurt, Cespedes is hurt. Been a rough month.

        6) There are 2.5 games separating first and last place in the NL Central.

        5) Jason Terry is a substitute guard for the Bucks; he’s played 17 years in the NBA. Last summer, he interviewed for the vacant UAB head coaching job. I’m guessing he would’ve had to take a pay cut if UAB hired him.

        4) If I ever write a book, one of the chapters will be “Baseball players get hurt a lot.”

        3) I have a team in a 16-team fantasy baseball league; 25 guys on a team, can have minor leaguers on the roster.

As I type this this, there are 42 players on the DL, only 3.5 weeks into the season, and thats not counting the guys who got cut because they might be out for the year or most of the year.

        2) Was watching the Toronto-Milwaukee NBA game Thursday night; was cool to see players from the Milwaukee Brewers watching the game together in a suite in the arena. Players live together for 7-8 months; bonding events like this one must make the season more fun.

1— This is old news, but bears reporting: St Peter’s went 10-0 vs spread in their MAAC road games this past winter. Very hard to do that; they didn’t cover either of their games in the MAAC tournament, but they finished the season 23-13 with the #34 experience team in the country.

              • Preview: Rangers (48-28) at Senators (44-28)
                Date: April 29, 2017 3:00 PM EDT

OTTAWA -- Even after taking a series lead, the Ottawa Senators were still trying to portray themselves as the underdog in an Eastern Conference semifinal battle against the New York Rangers.

"Their window to win a Stanley Cup is right now, and they have an opportunity right now to win the Cup," Senators winger Alex Burrows said on Friday of the Rangers. "They're not coming in just to play and see what happens."

What happened in Game 1 on Thursday was a 2-1 Ottawa win, thanks to captain Erik Karlsson's tiebreaking goal from behind the goal line that went in off the head of goalie Henrik Lundqvist with 4:11 left in the third period.

Afterward, Senators coach Guy Boucher said his team was motivated by the fear of being swept by the favored Rangers.

"It's a pretty good line," New York coach Alain Vigneault said with a smile Friday. "I'll remember it next time. It's a great line."

Burrows maintained the Senators feel like they're up against a juggernaut.

"They really have the mindset that they have the team to do it and I do believe they have the team to do it," Burrows said. "For us, we had some fear playing them (Thursday). We saw them play against Montreal (in the first round), the best team in our division, and they were able to win that series. We know what to expect. We know they're great team, but yes, we had some fear."

Ottawa outshot the Rangers 43-35 in the opener, with Lundqvist stopping all 21 shots he faced in the first period.

The Senators believe they have to keep firing the rubber at Lundqvist in Game 2, which is set for Saturday afternoon (3 p.m. ET) at Canadian Tire Centre.

"Did we get more shots than we expected to get? Yes," Ottawa coach Guy Boucher said. "But that was our plan. We know we can't beat this guy with 20 shots. We can't even beat him with 30 shots. We're going to need 40 shots and above. Even with over 40 shots and so many high-end scoring chances, we only got two in. That's how it's going to be."

Vigneault indicated he was satisfied with the way his team played 5-on-5, but while both teams were 1-for-4 on the power play, he felt the Senators picked up more momentum during their man-advantage situations.

Vigneault also said he may make lineup changes for Saturday, while Boucher is leaning toward sticking with the same group, even though winger Tom Pyatt has been cleared to return.

Pyatt could have ample opportunities to get back in the lineup over the next two weeks.

"We're prepared for a long series," Rangers center and former Senator Mika Zibanejad said. "We're prepared for a good series. We know it's a good team. If they want to try and low-ball themselves that's up to them, but they're good team, It's going to be a tough team to beat and we've got to make sure we really step it up and bring our A game

"It's an unlucky bounce that turns the game to 2-1 and a win for them. We've got to be on top of our game and make sure the bounces go our way."

                • Preview: Penguins (50-21) at Capitals (55-19)

WASHINGTON -- The rich could be getting richer as the visiting Pittsburgh Penguins look to take a 2-0 lead over the Washington Capitals in their best-of-seven Eastern Conference semifinal series when they play Game 2 on Saturday night.

Carl Hagelin, who missed the last 16 games of the regular season and all six playoff contests thus far due to a lower-body injury, was a full-contact participant in Friday's practice.

The forward will be a game-time decision for Saturday's contest.

Hagelin's return would add more speed to a Pittsburgh offense that was outshot 35-21 in a 3-2 win over the Capitals on Thursday night. The Penguins have won 11 of their last 14 playoff games going back to last season.

"It was fun to be out there and it felt good," Hagelin said after Friday's practice. "It's a step in the right direction. It's a day-to-day thing. Hopefully it feels even better (Saturday)."

Hagelin had only six goals and 16 assists in 61 games during the regular season, but recorded three goals and four assists in last season's playoff series win versus Washington.

"Hagy's a great two-way player," teammate Phil Kessel told the team's website. "He's a fast player. He brings speed."

The Capitals, meanwhile, had won five straight series openers before Thursday's setback. They started slowly in Game 1 and eventually fell behind 2-0 when Sidney Crosby opened the second period with two goals in 64 seconds.

Washington rallied to tie the score in the third period and appeared to have the momentum before Pittsburgh's Nick Bonino netted what proved to be the game winner.

"What I like about our group is it was 2-0 and there was no panic," Capitals head coach Barry Trotz said. "There was absolutely no panic and you saw us building momentum and keep coming and coming. I thought we generated enough chances to not only tie it up, but maybe go ahead."

Including shots on goal, missed shots and blocked shots, the Capitals totaled 83 attempts to 41 for Pittsburgh. The Penguins mustered only 21 shots on net and Braden Holtby said that two of the goals were ones he is capable of stopping.

"I thought he was fine, but he didn't think he was as good as he could be," Trotz said, "But I do know this. Hh is guy who responds and he's going to be better, he's going to be better (Saturday). That's good for us."

Eighty-seven times an NHL team has lost the first two games of a series at home, and only 18 of those teams came back to win the set.

The Penguins will be looking to create more scoring chances Saturday night and therefore keep the puck away from Alex Ovechkin, who scored his fourth goal of the playoffs in Game 1.

"We think we're at our best when we control territory and that's something that we've been working on with our players and talking to our players about," Penguins coach Mike Sullivan said. "And just doing a better job of hanging onto pucks in the offensive zone and forcing teams to have to expend energy defending us."

The Capitals are 14-11 all-time in Game 2 of a series and have posted a 10-6 record in Game 2 when trailing a series.

"They are the Stanley Cup champions so we have to dictate the game," Ovechkin said following the Game 1 defeat. "From the first minute of the game, we have to make a statement. We have to make a push."

                  • SATURDAY'S NHL STANLEY CUP PLAYOFFS BETTING PREVIEW AND ODDS

The second round of the Stanley Cup Playoffs continue Saturday as the Rangers and Capitals look to even up their respective series at one game apiece. We break down all the betting angles to help you handicap the day's puck action.

New York Rangers at Ottawa Senators (-105, 5)

                    Senators lead series 1-0

ABOUT THE RANGERS: New York needs to focus on a better start in Game 2 after Ottawa forced netminder Henrik Lundqvist to make 21 of his 43 saves in the first 20 minutes -- his highest save total ever for one period in the postseason. “Obviously we want to play fast, but we can’t rush it up with one guy trying to break through, give it away and have them come back and shove it up our (butt),” forward Mats Zuccarello told the New York Post. “It’s important for us to be patient with the puck against their trap." Leading goal scorer Chris Kreider remains stuck on one assist through seven playoff games.

ABOUT THE SENATORS: Karlsson missed five games down the stretch because of a pair of stress fractures in his heel, but he once again delivered with his first goal of this postseason to go along with his six assists, leaving Boucher grasping for superlatives. "I think our fans have to appreciate what we have here," Boucher marveled. "It's more than a star right now. That's what I think is unbelievable. He's a skilled player that became a star and now he's a winner." That also applies to goaltender Craig Anderson, who has won his last four against New York with a staggering .984 save percentage.

LINE HISTORY: The Senators opened Game 2 as very slight -109 homes favorites (must be the lack of fans), but they have since been moved to -105, making the Rangers now the -115 favorites. The total has been set at 5, but 4.5 can be found at a few shops. Check out the complete line history here.

                    INJURY REPORT:

Rangers - No injuries to report.

Senators - D M. Borowiecki (Out Saturday, lower body), LW T. Pyatt (Out Saturday).

                    TRENDS:

                    * Senators are 5-1 in their last six overall.
                    * Under is 4-0-1 in Rangers last five overall.
                    * Under is 2-0-2 in Senators last four overall.
                    * Home team is 5-1 in the last six meetings.

                    ********************************

Pittsburgh Penguins at Washington Capitals (-145, 5.5)

                    Penguins lead series 1-0

ABOUT THE PENGUINS: Nick Bonino continues to be a thorn in the side of Washington, ending last year's second-round series with the overtime winner in Game 6 and scoring and setting up a goal during the regular season before converting on a breakaway with 7:24 remaining in the third period on Thursday. "'Bones' is a guy that's a high-stakes player," coach Mike Sullivan said of the 29-year-old Connecticut native. "He brings his best game when the games are most important, and we've got a lot of guys on our roster that we can say that about." Marc-Andre Fleury falls into that category after making 15 of his 33 saves in the third period Thursday to improve to 5-1 in the playoffs with an impressive .934 save percentage.

ABOUT THE CAPITALS: Alex Ovechkin used some colorful language to express his displeasure with the officials failing to call any penalties against Pittsburgh in Game 1, while fellow teammate and former Penguin defenseman Matt Niskanen offered the more politically correct take of "no comment." While several members of Washington were pointing the finger at the officials, Braden Holtby had his directed at himself - with Crosby's first goal 12 seconds into the middle session as a sticking point. "I thought I got there in plenty of time," the reigning Vezina Trophy winner told the Washington Post. "... I just didn't keep my glove in the right position. It's just you leave that one little space and it goes right there. It's one that I'm capable of stopping and will next time."

LINE HISTORY: The Capitals opened Game 2 as -129 favorites and bettors like them to even up the series, moving the line to Washington -145. Oddsmakers set the total at 5.5. Check out the complete line history here.

                    INJURY REPORT:

Penguins - D C. Ruhwedel (Questionable Saturday, upper body), G M. Murray (Questionable Saturday, lower body), LW C. Hagelin (Questionable Saturday, lower body), D K. Letang (Out for Season, neck).

Capitals - D K. Alzner (Questionable Saturday, upper body).

                    TRENDS:

                    * Capitals are 1-5 in their last six Conference Semifinals games.
                    * Under is 8-0-3 in Capitals last 11 vs. games Metropolitan Division opponents.
                    * Home team is 8-1 in the last nine meetings.
                    * Over is 4-1-1 in the last six meetings.

                      • NHL roundup: Pageau scores 4 goals in Senators' win
                        April 29, 2017

OTTAWA -- Jean-Gabriel Pageau's fourth goal of the game 2:54 into double overtime gave the Ottawa Senators a 6-5 victory over the New York Rangers at Canadian Tire Centre on Saturday.

The win gives Ottawa a 2-0 lead in its best-of-seven Eastern Conference semifinal series, which shifts to New York for Game 3 on Tuesday.

Pageau scored his second and third goals in the final 3:19 of regulation time. He started the comeback by deflecting a Zack Smith shot and completed his hat trick with a tip of a Kyle Smith shot 62 seconds from the buzzer with goaltender Craig Anderson on the bench for an extra attacker.

Marc Methot and Mark Stone also scored for the Senators, who erased two-goal deficits on three occasions.

Rookie defenseman Brady Skjei led the Rangers with two goals while Michael Grabner, Chris Kreider and Derek Stepan also scored.

                        Penguins 6, Capitals 2

WASHINGTON -- Phil Kessel and Jake Guentzel each had two goals and an assist, Marc-Andre Fleury made 34 saves and Pittsburgh defeated Washington to take a 2-0 lead in their best-of-seven Eastern Conference semifinal.

Evgeni Malkin and Matt Cullen each had a goal and an assist, and Sidney Crosby had two assists as the Penguins won despite getting outshot 36-24. After winning twice away from home, Pittsburgh hosts Game 3 on Monday night.

Nicklas Backstrom had a goal and an assist for the Capitals, who have yet to lead in the series. Goaltender Braden Holtby was pulled after allowing three goals on 14 shots over the first two periods.

                          — Nationals’ OF Adam Eaton tore his ACL Friday; is done for the season.

                          — Ottawa 6, NY Rangers 5 OT— Senators head to NYC with series tied 1-1.

                          — Dolphins didn’t pick an offensive player until the 5th round, latest of any team.

                          — Michigan had 11 players drafted by the NFL this weekend, most of any school- remember, they were Brady Hoke’s recruits, not Jim Harbaugh’s.

                          — 53 SEC players were drafted, 11th year in a row SEC had the most players taken.

                          — Dodgers 6, Phillies 5– LA hit three consecutive HR’s in bottom of 9th inning to tie game, then scored on a Philly error to win it.

                          Sunday’s List of 13: Wrapping up a sports Saturday……

                          13) Ominous note for the Atlanta Falcons: Last team to lose the Super Bowl and get back to the Super Bowl the next year? Buffalo Bills, in 1993.

                          12) There is only one Game 7 in the first round of the NBA playoffs; there were none in the first round of the NHL playoffs, which seems unusual.

                          11) What time do garbagemen begin their work day? They switched my garbage collection day from Monday to Tuesday; truck came thru my neighborhood at 5:55am last week- thats a lot of noise for 5:55am.

                          10) It is snowing in Colorado this weekend; if the Rockies had been scheduled at home this weekend, they wouldn’t be playing.

                          9) Washington Redskins had the most passing yards to tight ends LY, which explains why the Rams drafted TE Gerald Everett from South Alabama— Sean McVay obviously isn’t too impressed with the Rams’ TE’s from last year.

Rams drafted two guys from Eastern Washington, which went 12-2 LY and lost in national semifinals at the I-AA level.

                          8) Raiders drafted T David Sharpe from Florida in the 4th round. Florida’s QB LY was Luke Del Rio, son of Raiders’ coach Jack Del Rio.

                          7) Those 100 or so people ESPN fired this week; what do they do now? You figure some of them will hook up with other TV networks, but probably not that many— how many openings can there be? There have to be a lot of people wondering what direction their life will take next.

                          6) Minnesota Vikings had only two games started by rookies LY, fewest in the NFL.

                          5) 49ers drafted QB CJ Beathard from Iowa, grandson of former Redskins’ GM Bobby Beathard. From ESPN.com:

“Beathard lacks an elite physical skill, but he is an unselfish leader and tireless worker — all of which may allow him to overcome his physical deficiencies. He possesses a strong combination of competitiveness, toughness and football IQ to potentially develop into a serviceable backup.” Kevin Weidl

                          4) From everything said on TV, Philadelphia did a great job hosting the NFL Draft; they had a ton of people there Thursday/Friday night.

                          3) Nike, adidas, UnderArmour all passed on endorsement deals with UCLA PG Lonzo Ball; this becomes more interesting if the kid is the #1 pick in the NBA Draft. Been a while since a father’s big mouth cost his son this much money.

                          2) Denver drafted Jim Kelly’s nephew (Ole Miss QB Chad) with the last pick in the draft. I’ll make a prediction that Mr Kelly winds up (maybe in 2018) as the Broncos’ starting QB.

1— If every American did his/her job as well as Mel Kiper Jr does his job, this would be a better country. The man is totally prepared.

                              • Sunday’s NHL Stanley Cup Betting Preview and Odds

Anaheim find themselves in unfamiliar territory, as the Pacific Division champions have suffered back-to-back regulation losses for the first time since October.

The second round of the Stanley Cup Playoffs continues Sunday with two critical Game 3’s. The Oilers look to take a commanding 3-0 lead while the Predators look to take advantage of home ice. We break down all the betting angles to help you handicap the day's puck action.

Saint Louis Blues at Nashville Predators (-145, 5)

                                Series tied at 1

ABOUT THE BLUES (51-31-5-2 SU, 38-51 ATS, 36-39 O/U): Vladimir Tarasenko, who pumped in a team-high 39 goals this season after scoring 40 in 2015-16, had been limited to one tally and three points before breaking loose in Game 2. "What he's done in the playoffs speaks for itself," St. Louis coach Mike Yeo said of the Russian standout. "If you want to look up the stats and what he's done speaks for itself. ... It’s not like he’s been playing poorly.” Goaltender Jake Allen also stood tall when it mattered most, making 14 saves in the final 20 minutes after facing only nine shots in the first two periods.

ABOUT THE PREDATORS (46-30-8-4 SU, 45-43 ATS, 42-36 O/U): Despite its inability to hold the third-period lead and the fact that Nashville put St. Louis on the power play five times without having one of its own in Game 2, a bright spot was provided by forward James Neal. A 31-goal scorer for the Predators last season, Neal ended a 10-game goal drought with his first of the postseason after tallying four times in each of the previous two seasons. The Predators' blue-line corps continues to provide production, with Ryan Ellis following up P.K. Subban's three-point game with a goal and assist on Friday.

LINE HISTORY: The Predators opened as -140 moneyline favorites for Game 3 on home ice and the total opened at 5.

                                INJURY REPORT:

Blues - C Robby Fabbri (Out for Season, knee)

Predators - RW Craig Smith (Questionable Sunday, lower body), LW Pontus Aberg (Questionable Sunday, undisclosed), LW Vernon Fiddler (Questionable Sunday, possible suspension), LW Kevin Fail (Out for Season, leg)

                                TRENDS:

                                * Predators are 5-1 in their last six overall.
                                * Under is 5-1 in Blues last six games following a win.
                                * Under is 1-0-3 in Predators last four games playing on 1 days rest.
                                * Under is 3-0-2 in Predators last five home games.

Anaheim Ducks at Edmonton Oilers (-130, 5)

                                Oilers lead series 2-0

ABOUT THE DUCKS (50-25-10-3 SU, 46-42 ATS, 30-38 O/U): The "other" goaltender in this series is John Gibson, who rebounded from a four-goal performance in the series opener by stopping 21 shots on Friday - although he yielded his ninth power-play tally of the playoffs. "If you're going to play a long time, you're going to have adversity," the 23-year-old Gibson told the Orange County Register. "We have it now. If you want to have success, we have a job to get done." Jakob Silfverberg scored for the second time in as many games Friday to match captain Ryan Getzlaf with a team-leading four goals, while the 26-year-old Swede's point total resides at 28 in 29 playoff appearances since 2015.

ABOUT THE OILERS (53-27-5-5 SU, 49-41 ATS, 35-46 O/U): While likely Hart Trophy candidate and generational talent Connor McDavid traditionally commands the undivided attention of the opponent, several unsung Edmonton players temporarily have grabbed the spotlight in his stead. Andrej Sekera has joined fellow defenseman Adam Larsson and forwards Zack Kassian, David Desharnais and Anton Slepyshev in providing offense in the playoffs for the Oilers. Former Duck Patrick Maroon, who scored the game-winning tally on the power play Friday, has no trouble in that regard after setting career highs in both goals (27) and points (42) to go along with personal bests in rating (plus-13) and games played (81).

LINE HISTORY: The Oilers opened as -130 favorites and moved to -135 before returning to the opening number of -130. The total hit the betting board at 5 and hasn’t moved off the opening number.

                                INJURY REPORT:

Ducks - D Sami Valanen (Questionable Sunday, shoulder), LW Nick Ritchie (Questionable Sunday, flu), D Kevin Bieksa (Out Sunday, lower body), D Simon Desires (Out Indefinitely, concussion), D Clayton Stoner (Out Indefinitely, abdominal)

Oilers - LW Drake Caggiula (Questionable Sunday, lower body), D Andrew Ference (Out for Season, hip), RW Tyler Pitlick (Out for Season, knee)

                                TRENDS:

                                * Ducks are 12-3 in their last 15 vs. a team with a winning record.
                                * Oilers are 11-1 in their last 12 home games.
                                * Over is 5-0-2 in Ducks last seven when their opponent allows two goals or less in their previous game.
                                * Over is 4-1-4 in Oilers last nine after allowing two goals or less in their previous game.
                                * Under is 4-1-1 in the last six meetings in Edmonton.
