  • Armadillo: Tuesday's six-pack

Odds to win the college basketball national title:

    3-1: Duke, Kentucky

    5-1: UCLA

    7-1: North Carolina, Kansas

    8-1: Villanova

    12-1: Baylor

    15-1: Louisville-Indiana-Gonzaga

    **********

Armadillo: Tuesday's List of 13: Nobody asked me, but…….

    13) Cowboys 42, Lions 21— How does a team that has trailed in 4th quarter in 14 of 15 games still have a shot to make the playoffs? First half of this game was great but then Cowboys won going away, winning easily in a game they didn’t need.

Redskins are happier than hell; they’re in playoffs if they beat the Giants Sunday except for one incredible scenario. If Packers/Lions tie Sunday, they both make the playoffs. Imagine if that game goes overtime and both teams play cautiously, just to make playoffs? Wow.

    12) Did Edwin Encarnacion turn down more money from the A’s than he took from Cleveland?

I can feel my blood pressure going up; A’s were going to sign him, then if they weren’t in the pennant race in July, trade him to a contender for prospects, the way they traded Matt Holliday and Ben Zobrist. Oakland’s starting pitching is better than it has been in couple years, so they could contend this year, if everything goes well.

Not often a player turns down more $$$ to sign elsewhere, especially if elsewhere is Cleveland.

    11) Note to self; next year, when the Broncos play the Chiefs, there will be hard feelings, moreso than usual in this divisional rivalry, after Dontari Poe’s TD pass in the last 2:00 of Sunday nite’s win. Mr Poe is a defensive end who weighs over 300 pounds; him throwing a TD pass was the kind of stunt that gets remembered for a long time. Hopefully we can take advantage of that next year.

    10) I was surprised by this: the mayor of New York City makes $225K. The governor of the state of New York only makes $179K. Shouldn’t a governor make more than a may0r?

    9) Ravens’ WR Steve Smith was 11th wide receiver taken in the 2001 NFL Draft; the graduate of Santa Monica College and Utah is the only one of those 11 WR’s who is still playing in the NFL.

    8) Houston Texans have been outscored by 42 points this season, but are in the playoffs.

    7) When Jay Ajayi had his big run in overtime that set up the Dolphins’ game-winning FG Saturday, Buffalo only had ten men on the field. That kind of stuff gets coaches fired.

    6) Matt Ryan has thrown TD passes to 13 different players this season, most in NFL history in one season.

    5) Derek Carr is going to be the first-ever NFL QB to win 12+ regular season games but not make a playoff start- thats how unusual the timing of his injury was.

    4) San Diego State 62, San Francisco 48— Aztecs win the Diamond Head tourney in Hawaii.

    3) Nuggets 106, Clippers 102— No Paul, no Griffin, no Redick……no good.

    2) Pistons 106, Cavaliers 90— Handicapping the NBA means you have to keep close tabs on who is “resting” that night. Lebron James “rested” last night and the Cavaliers got killed. Go figure.

1— 16 NFL games this Sunday, the way it should be. Most of the important games are at 4:00, except for the Detroit-Green Bay game, which is the night game. Should be quite a day.

            • In the Crease - Week 12
              December 27, 2016

              STREAKY TEAMS

Wins and Losses Streak Over/Under Streak
Boston 3-0-3 past six road Arizona Under 15-3-4 past 22 overall
Columbus 12-0 past 12 overall Columbus Under 4-1-2 past seven road
Minnesota 10-0 past 10 overall Dallas Under 4-0 past four overall
Ottawa 4-0 past four overall, 3-0-1 past four home Edmonton Under 5-0-2 past seven overall
Pittsburgh 8-0-1 past nine home N.Y. Islanders Over 6-1 past seven overall

              Bedeviled
The New Jersey Devils have struggled mightily since the calendar turned to December, and they are in the midst of a 1-7-1 slide dating back to Dec. 8. Goaltending has been a major reason for the skid, as they have allowed three or more goals in 17 of the past 19 outings overall. Things do not figure to get any better, as Pittsburgh skates into town Tuesday following by a home-and-home with Washington and a visit from Boston. The Pens have outscored the Devils 8-4 in two earlier losses, while the Caps have yet to face New Jersey this season. Pittsburgh is 4-1 in the past five meetings, although the home team is 24-6 in the past 30 in the series and Pittsburgh has won just five of their past 21 trips to Newark.

              Sour Notes in Music City
The Nashville Predators have been struggling on home ice lately. They were pounded 4-0 against Los Angeles in their most recent home game Thursday, and they are 2-3-2 in their past seven in Nashville. The next three home games feature the red-hot Minnesota Wild Tuesday night, as they skate in on a 10-game winning streak. One of those wins was a 5-2 Wild victory in Nashville Dec. 15. The Chicago Blackhawks follow that visit Thursday, and the Eastern Conference leading Montreal Canadiens come to town Jan. 3 for the first game of the New Year. It might be a good idea to continue to fade the Predators at home until they can solve their issues. Nashville has allowed 26 goals over their past seven games at home.

              Looking Ahead

              Tuesday, Dec. 27

The Rangers host the Senators in a battle between Eastern Conference contenders. The Senators have made themselves at home over the years in Madison Square Garden, winning 27 of their past 37 trips to Midtown Manhattan. The road team has won 22 of the past 31 meetings in this series, too. And if you're into totals, you might want to hammer the 'under' at MSG Tuesday. The 'under' is 19-5-2 in the past 26 meetings in New York, and 32-10-9 in the past 51 meetings overall in this series.

Two red-hot Golden State rivals do battle on the ice in Southern California. The Sharks have won six of their past seven games overall, and they're 4-1 in their past five against teams with a losing overall record. The Ducks have won each of their past four on home ice, and they're 6-2 in their past eight battles against teams with a .600 winning percentage or better. The Sharks have won just once in their past five skates in Anaheim, and San Jose is just 1-5 in their past six meetings overall. The home team has won 27 of the past 38 in the series.

              Wednesday, Dec. 28
The Canadiens head to South Florida to try and add to the woes of the Lightning. Montreal hasn't been too good on the road recently, going just 3-7 in their past 10 away from Bell Centre and 7-18 in their past 25 road outings against a team with a winning home record. The Lightning have struggled since superstar Steven Stamkos went down, and they have won just four of their past 14 overall. They're also 0-4 in their past four against teams with a winning percentage over .600, while winning just two of their past eight against Eastern Conference foes. Montreal has won five straight in this series, and the over is 5-2-2 in the past nine meetings in Tampa.

The Hurricanes look to change their luck against the Penguins in the Steel City. Carolina has won just 25 of their past 80 games over the past couple of years against teams with a winning overall record, and they're just 1-6 in their past seven games within the ultra-competitive Metropolitan Division. Pittsburgh has won 40 of their past 52 home games, and they're 26-9 in their past 35 against teams with a losing record. The Canes have won just six of their past 19 meetings overall, and they're 3-9 in their past 12 trips to Pittsburgh.

              Thursday, Dec. 29
The Bruins look to stay hot on the road, and they look to keep the Sabres down in the process. Boston has won each of the first two meetings this season, including a 2-1 win in Buffalo Dec. 3. The Bruins have won nine of the past 11 meetings in this series, including each of the past five trips to Western New York. The 'under' is a perfect 3-0 in the past three meetings, and 2-0-3 in the past five skates in Buffalo. Boston enters the week 3-0-3 in their past six games away from home, and they have been much better overall on the road.

The Blackhawks invade the Music City looking to add to the woes of the Predators at home. Chicago has won six of the past nine regular season games in this series, although they have won just twice in the past six trips to Nashville. When these teams hook up there are generally plenty of goals. The 'over' is 3-1-4 in the past eight meetings overall, and 2-1-3 in the past six skates in Tennessee.

              Friday, Dec. 30
The Predators head to St. Louis looking to tame the Blues. Nashville hasn't had a lot of success in the Gateway City, however, losing three straight along the banks of the Mississippi River, and five of their past seven. The 'under' is 5-2-1 in the past eight meetings in this series, too. The Blues have piled up an impressive 7-1-2 mark in their past 10 home games, including a 3-1 win back on Nov. 19 against the Predators.

Vancouver hosts Anaheim in the late game Friday. The Ducks won their most recent trip to the Pacific Northwest by a 3-1 count back on Dec. 1, cashing as a -165 favorite. Anaheim has outscored Vancouver 7-3 in two meetings this season, and the Ducks have won eight of their past 10 trips to British Columbia. Anaheim has outscored Vancouver 36-15 during the 10-game span in Vancouver. The Canucks limp in with the third-fewest points in the Western Conference, and they haven't won back-to-back games at home since opening the season 4-0.

              • Surprising Jackets pile up wins, lead NHL
                December 27, 2016

COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) When the Columbus Blue Jackets beat the Montreal Canadiens two days before Christmas for the team's 12th consecutive win, the sell-out crowd at Nationwide Arena stayed put and cheered long past the final horn.

Understandable, given that the fans here haven't had much to celebrate in the team's 16-year history.

Just a season removed from a last-place finish in the Metropolitan Division - coach John Tortorella called 2015-16 ''embarrassing'' - the Blue Jackets have hockey's best record fueled by a roster light on stars but deep in key contributors.

Goaltender Sergei Bobrovsky led the way against the Canadiens on Friday, stopping 36 shots in a 2-1 victory, including two acrobatic blocks using the toe of his skate. The previous night, Scott Hartnell was the star, getting a hat trick in a 7-1 win over the defending Stanley Cup champion Pittsburgh Penguins to take over first place in the league's toughest division.

The Blue Jackets are off to their best start ever at 23-5-4. They have the league's largest goal differential (plus-45) and haven't lost in regulation since the day before Thanksgiving.

Columbus is hunting its first ever division title and third postseason appearance after limping to a 34-40-8 record last season, a shocking feat since the core of the roster largely returned.

                So what's the difference?

''Mental,'' said Tortorella, who replaced Todd Richards after the Blue Jackets started 0-7 last season. ''We're a much better mentally equipped team, in handling things, in understanding what it is to be a pro. More businesslike.''

''The energy,'' said left wing Brandon Saad, who led the team last year with 31 goals and 53 points. ''When you're winning hockey games, everyone is coming in excited and with confidence and we're playing well as a team. Last year, the way things were going, it was tough coming to the rink.''

Another reason for the turnaround is the resurgence of captain Nick Foligno, one of four players with 10 or more goals. He's back to his old self following a disappointing 2015-16 in which he had just 37 points - he led the team with 73 the season before.

''I think the biggest thing is that we have an identity,'' Foligno said. ''It's something we didn't have. Every team needs to have that to be successful. We're a depth team, good defense, we play fast, obviously great goaltending, and we really believe in ourselves right now, which was maybe lacking last year.''

Columbus has also gotten a jolt - and some big minutes - from some emerging young stars. Defenseman Zach Werenski is pulling over 21 minutes per game and showing surprising maturity for a 19-year-old rookie. Werenski is paired with 22-year-old Seth Jones, another fast, aggressive defender and top-notch passer.

Sam Gagner has also been a pleasant surprise. The 27-year-old journeyman signed a one-year, $650,000 free agent contract over the summer and has 14 goals already after scoring eight in 53 games with the Flyers last season.

''Being on a winning team helps,'' Gagner said. ''Coming to the game and knowing your role and what's expected of you, and knowing there's a good possibility of winning the game, that's exciting. I've enjoyed being on a team like this.''

Columbus hasn't made the postseason since 2013-14, when it lost in the first round. This improbable team doesn't just look like a rare playoff-worthy squad, though. It seems primed to compete for the Stanley Cup.

Just don't expect to hear that coming from the locker room.

''We have to stay so focused on what we have to do each day because we simply are not good enough to think we're OK here now,'' Tortorella said. ''We have to concentrate every day on what we're trying to do, and that's where I think we made the biggest improvement.''

COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) Nick Foligno scored a power-play goal midway through the third period, Sergei Bobrovsky had 37 saves and the NHL-leading Columbus Blue Jackets beat the Boston Bruins 4-3 on Tuesday night to extend their winning streak to 13 games.

Scott Hartnell, Seth Jones and Matt Calvert scored to put the burgeoning Blue Jackets up 3-0 in the first period, but they were outplayed from there by the more aggressive Bruins. Columbus stayed in the game thanks to the latest stellar performance by Bobrovsky, who got his first career victory in eight games against Boston.

David Backes, Austin Czarnik and David Krejci scored for the Bruins, and Tuukka Rask had 18 saves.

Columbus hasn't lost since Nov. 26 on this franchise-best winning streak. It leads the brutal Metropolitan Division a season after finishing in last place.

Foligno scored the winner with a wraparound goal 10:46 into the third period off a pass from Alexander Wennberg. NEW YORK (AP) - Defenseman Nick Holden scored the go-ahead goal less than seven minutes into the third period, lifting New York to a comeback victory over Ottawa.

Holden's second goal of the game and sixth of the season came at 6:31 as he wedged the puck past Senators goaltender Mike Condon just 4 seconds after a Rangers' power play had expired.

GLENDALE, Ariz. (AP) - Jason Spezza had a goal and an assist, Kari Lehtonen made 35 saves and Dallas beat Arizona in a testy contest.

Smith retaliated, and players from both sides intervened. Arizona's Lawson Crouse and Dallas' Curtis McKenzie were given five minutes each for fighting.

Jamie Benn also scored for Dallas, and John Klingberg's empty-net goal with 1:08 left made it 3-1, but the Coyotes were awarded a penalty shot with 6.6 seconds left that Radim Vrbata converted.

Anthony Duclair also had a goal for Arizona.

                    SABRES 4, RED WINGS 3

DETROIT (AP) - Evander Kane scored his second goal of the game in the third period to lift Buffalo over Detroit and get coach Dan Bylsma his 300th NHL victory.

The Wings rallied from 2-0 and 3-1 deficits and thought they had tied it late when Frans Nielsen appeared the score, but the whistle had already been blown because goalie Robin Lehner was hurt after being struck in the throat by teammate Zach Bogosian's stick.

Lehner was able to continue after being attended to by the Buffalo training staff.

                      • Armadillo: Wednesday's six-pack

                        — Bills fired Rex Ryan Tuesday, benched Tyrod Taylor for the season finale. Not sure how the GM kept his job, but somehow he did.

                        — I highly recommend the Burger Lounge in the Aria casino. Tremendous bacon burger.

                        — Northwestern 87, Penn State 77— Big road win for the Wildcats.

                        — Wake Forest 34, Temple 26— It is easier when the other team doesn’t have your plays.

                        — Kent State 63, Texas 58— Horrible home hoop loss for the Longhorns.

                        — Michigan State 75, Minnesota 74 OT— Gophers couldn’t get good look at end of regulation or end of overtime; a bitter loss for Richard Pitino.

                        **********

Armadillo: Wednesday's List of 13: My top 13 NFL teams……

                        13) Broncos— Curious to see who plays QB for the Broncos next season; I’m guessing it is someone who is not currently on their roster.

                        12) Texans— Won division title with JJ Watt missing the whole season; not bad.

                        11) Redskins— Can you imagine if Green Bay and Detroit tie Sunday night? People in our nation’s capital are not going to be very happy.

                        10) Dolphins— Can’t wait to bet under on their 2017 over/under win total.

                        9) Seahawks— Need to improve their offensive line this winter/spring.

                        8) Packers— It is basically impossible to overpay a guy like Aaron Rodgers or Tom Brady, thats how much they mean to a $1B business.

                        7) Giants— I see Scott Linehan doing so well as OC in Dallas and Steve Spagniolo’s defense playing well in New Jersey, then I remember how terribly they did as head coach of the Rams. Timing is everything in life.

                        6) Steelers— I really liked their all-black uniforms they wore Christmas night.

                        5) Raiders— Derek Carr’s injury is just very unfortunate for a team having a great year.

                        4) Chiefs— Still unsure what that lineman’s TD pass was all about Sunday night, but they aggravated Denver, now they need help from the Broncos this week to win AFC West title.

                        3) Falcons— Falcons/Braves are both getting new stadiums next year; why?

                        2) Patriots— Since 2000, the AFC East has had 24 different head coaches; the Patriots have had one, other three teams 23.

                        1) Cowboys— Pounded Detroit in a game they didn’t even need. Impressive.

Armadillo: Thursday's List of 13: Random thoughts after my vacation

                              13) It is good to be home; had great fun at the Aria Hotel in Las Vegas for eight days, but now it is time to get to work on college basketball. Having fun can be tiring.

                              12) There was a middle-aged man doing pushups in the McCarran Airport terminal by gate B14 Wednesday morning; I enjoyed my jelly doughnut while watching him exercise.

                              11) One of the basic rules of life: If there is a screaming child on an airplane that I am on, the child will undoubtedly be sitting right behind me. Just because.

                              10) $8 for WiFi is a sound investment for a 5-hour flight. Makes the time go so much faster.

                              9) Walking on the Las Vegas Strip at night is something everyone should do at least once; great place to people watch. It is better in summer than winter, but any time of year is fine.

Not a lot of English being spoken in Las Vegas this week; lot of visitors from other countries. Lot of people taking pictures of the ceiling in the Bellagio.

                              8) Planet Hollywood improved their sportsbook; put little dining area in near the bar, with white furniture that brightens the whole place up.

I’m watching the end of the Laker game Tuesday; game is 99-99 with 0:58 left, total is 204.5. Two guys in their 20’s come in and stand next to me; one of them has over 204.5. It looked good for his bet until a couple of missed foul shots, then lousy shot selection by D’Angelo Russell doomed him. My new friend was not happy. I went on my way.

                              7) If you ran an NFL franchise that needed a QB, would you trade a 1st and 4th-round draft choice to New England for Jimmy Garoppolo? Apparently that offer is on the table.

                              6) Dez Bryant’s TD pass against the Lions Monday night was the only left-handed TD pass in the NFL this season.

                              5) Tampa Bay Lightning head coach John Cooper was once a public defender in Lansing, MI; not sure how he got from there to being an NHL head coach, but he should write a book.

                              4) Oakland Raiders’ QB Matt McGloin is 1-5 as an NFL starter, with all six starts coming in 2013, when he helped ruin my ridiculously injury-riddled fantasy team (he was my 7th QB that year).

McGloin’s only win was against Houston, coached then by Gary Kubiak. McGloin needs to beat Kubiak’s Broncos this week for the Raiders to win the AFC West title.

                              3) I’m typing this and Bill Walton is at the UCLA-Oregon game talking about clothing-optional beaches in California. He is a gem.

                              2) Rookie QB Carson Wentz bought his offensive linemen shotguns for Christmas; if I’m coaching the Eagles, not sure I think thats such a great idea.

                              1) Northwestern 31, Pittsburgh 24— Cubs won World Series, Northwestern won a bowl game; whats next? Northwestern in NCAA tournament? That could happen too.
