PITTSBURGH (AP) Sidney Crosby scored in his season debut as the Pittsburgh Penguins rallied to beat the Florida Panthers 3-2 on Tuesday night.

Crosby, who scored on a power play, missed the team's first six games with a concussion. Carl Hagelin and Eric Fehr also scored for the Penguins, who extended a seven-game unbeaten streak against the Panthers.

Marc-Andre Fleury, who has started the first seven games of the season for Pittsburgh, stopped 20 shots. Matt Murray, who backstopped the Penguins to a Stanley Cup in June, served as the backup to Fleury after missing the first six games with a broken hand.

Reilly Smith scored a power-play goal and Mark Pysyk also scored for the Panthers, who have lost 11 of 12 against the Penguins in Pittsburgh.

James Reimer made 19 saves in his second start of the season.

WILD 5, BRUINS 0

BOSTON (AP) - Devan Dubnyk made 27 saves, Charlie Coyle and Chris Stewart scored 12 seconds apart and the Wild used four second-period goals to beat the Bruins.

Ryan Suter and Jason Zucker each had a goal and an assist for Minnesota, and rookie Joel Eriksson Ek got his first three NHL assists.

Jason Pominville scored in the third period, and Dubnyk got his 20th career shutout and the first for Minnesota this season.

Boston was missing its top two goalies and the Wild capitalized after a lackluster first period.

Malcolm Subban started in net but was pulled after allowing three goals on 16 shots in the first 30:36. Zane McIntyre then made his NHL debut and stopped 15 of 17 shots.

DEVILS 5, COYOTES 3

NEWARK, N.J. (AP) - Travis Zajac scored twice in the final 2:01 to lead the Devils over the Coyotes.

Taylor Hall scored twice and Adam Henrique also had a goal for New Jersey, which is 3-0-0 at home and 0-2-1 on the road.

Hall, acquired by the Devils in a trade with Edmonton in June, has scored all five of his goals this season at Prudential Center.

Cory Schneider made 28 saves to help New Jersey win its third straight against Arizona dating to last season, and its fifth in seven games against the Coyotes overall.

Oliver Ekman-Larsson scored twice in the third period for Arizona to tie it before Zajac's two goals. Jordan Martinook also scored for the Coyotes, and Justin Peters stopped 30 shots.

LIGHTNING 7, MAPLE LEAFS 3

TORONTO (AP) - Steven Stamkos matched a career-high with four points - two goals and two assists - and the Lightning beat the Maple Leafs.

Frederik Andersen gave up seven goals on only 24 shots, the third time in five starts he has allowed at least five goals and fourth time he's allowed four or more. The 27-year-old has an .851 save percentage so far this season.

Alex Killorn, Victor Hedman, Nikita Kucherov, Vladislav Namestnikov and Jonathan Drouin added goals for Tampa Bay, while Ben Bishop made 40 saves.

William Nylander, James van Riemsdyk and Auston Matthews scored for the Maple Leafs, who outshot the Lightning 43-24.

RED WINGS 4, HURRICANES 2

DETROIT (AP) - Dylan Larkin scored two goals to lead the Red Wings to their fifth consecutive win, a decision over the Hurricanes.

Andreas Athanasiou had a goal and an assist and Thomas Vanek scored for Detroit (5-2-0). Petr Mrazek made 28 saves for the Red Wings, whose last five-game winning streak was Jan. 13-27, 2015.

Jordan Staal and Victor Rask scored for Carolina while Cam Ward stopped 21 shots.

An apparent goal by the Hurricanes' Teuvo Teravainen with 3:03 left was waved off because he deflected a shot in with a high stick.

Athanasiou gave Detroit a 4-2 lead with 2:56 left in the second period on a wrist shot from the right circle. It was Athanasiou's second goal of the season.

That was after Carolina scored twice in the second to pull within a goal.

FLAMES 4, BLUES 1

ST. LOUIS (AP) - Brian Elliott stopped 23 shots in his return to St. Louis, Johnny Gaudreau and Sam Bennett each had a goal and an assist and the Flames beat the Blues.

Elliott was traded from St. Louis to Calgary in June, and the 17,337 in attendance serenaded Elliott with chants of ''Moose,'' his nickname, on his first couple of saves. Elliott's best save came late in the second when he slid his right pad across the crease to rob Nail Yakupov on a rebound attempt.

Dennis Wideman and Deryk Engelland also scored to help the Flames snap a seven-game losing streak at St. Louis.

Kevin Shattenkirk scored for the Blues on a two-man advantage in the third, and Carter Hutton made 26 saves. After winning their first three games, the Blues are 1-2-1 in their last four.

FLYERS 4, SABRES 3, SO

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Claude Giroux and Jake Voracek scored shootout goals to cap a fantastic Flyers rally in a win over the Sabres.

Trailing 3-1, Brayden Schenn and Mark Streit scored the tying power-play goals with 3:05 left in regulation.

Buffalo's Dmitry Kulikov was whistled for charging when he wiped out Jake Voracek late in the game to start a scrum between the two teams. Schenn quickly followed with a power-play goal with 3:05 left to make it 3-2. Streit scored with 1:51 left in regulation when he knocked in the puck on the fourth rebound past a stunned Anders Nilsson.

Travis Konecny also scored for the Flyers. Matt Moulson scored two goals for the Sabres.

STARS 3, JETS 2

DALLAS (AP) - Antti Niemi made 28 saves and the Stars beat the Jets.

The win salvaged the last game of Dallas' 1-1-1 home stand. Winnipeg lost its second straight and fourth in five games.

Brett Ritchie, Patrick Eaves and Tyler Seguin scored for the Stars.

The goals against Niemi came in the closing seconds of the second and third periods. Joel Armia beat him to the puck to score with 5 seconds left in the second, and Mark Scheifele put in a rebound on the power play with 9 seconds to play in the third.

Niemi made two big saves while the game was scoreless in the first period. He stopped a breakaway by Alexander Burmistrov and a shot by Scheifele on a 2-on-1.

Seconds later, the Stars had a 2-on-1. Curtis McKenzie passed back into the slot to Ritchie, who sent a wrist shot past Michael Hutchinson at 14:37 and Dallas never trailed again.

SENATORS 3, CANUCKS 0

VANCOUVER, British Columbia (AP) - Ryan Dzingel scored two goals and Craig Anderson made 22 saves for his first shutout of the season and the 34th of his career as the Senators beat the Canucks.

Jean-Gabriel Pageau scored into an empty net for the Senators.

Anderson entered play with a 3.66 goals-against average and an .866 save percentage, but was flawless as Ottawa (4-2-0) opened a three-game road trip through western Canada with a solid defensive effort.

Ryan Miller made 25 stops for Vancouver (4-2-1), which has dropped three straight and lost at home for the first time in 2016-17.

After opening the scoring in the first period, Dzingel added his fourth of the season at 2:12 at of the third, taking a slick no-look feed from Bobby Ryan in front and beating Miller for the first two-goal game of his career.

SHARKS 2, DUCKS 1, OT

SAN JOSE, Calif. (AP) - Marc-Edouard Vlasic scored less than 90 seconds into overtime to give the Sharks a victory over the Ducks.

Joe Pavelski also scored for the Sharks, who snapped a two-game losing streak.

Chris Wagner scored for the Ducks, who had a two-game winning streak snapped.

Goaltender Jonathan Bernier, in just his second game with the Ducks, left the game following the first period with an upper body injury. He stopped 10 of the 11 shots he faced.

John Gibson, who led rookies in goal against average and shutouts last season, came on and stopped the first 25 shots he faced before allowing Vlasic's goal in a 1-on-1 situation.

Sharks goalie Martin Jones stopped 19 of 20 shots and improved to 3-5 all-time against the Ducks.

KINGS 3, BLUE JACKETS 2

LOS ANGELES (AP) - Alec Martinez scored 1:14 into overtime, and the Kings rallied to beat the Blue Jackets for their third straight victory.

Drew Doughty scored the tying goal with 5:57 left in regulation for the Kings, who won their third straight overtime game after an 0-3-0 start to the season. Captain Anze Kopitar also scored, and third-string goalie Peter Budaj stopped 19 shots in his third consecutive win.

Cam Atkinson scored a tiebreaking power-play goal late in the second period, and Sergei Bobrovsky made 27 saves for Columbus. Brandon Saad also scored for the Jackets, who had won two straight after an 0-2-0 start.

Martinez ended it by putting a rebound into an open net for the defenseman's second goal of the season.

Wednesday’s List of 13: Sports Illustrated ranks NBA players……

Before starting today, I have something that needs to be said.

New Jersey Giants are taking some heat for how they handled the Josh Brown situation; they may have made a mistake giving the guy a 2-year contract after his domestic violence issues, but they corrected that mistake and sent Brown on his way. No one is perfect; when mistakes are made, they need to be corrected and this one was.

The Giants used to have training camp here in Albany; I got to know some of their PR people and they couldn’t have been nicer to me. First class people all the way. My dad (a huge Giants fan) got sick one summer and the Giants gave him a football signed by the whole team. It meant a lot to him. It is still here in my living room, next to my football signed by Vince Ferragamo (ha!!!).

Last year, when my dad passed away, the Giants sent a bouquet of flowers to the wake. It was so kind, so unexpected, just a very nice/thoughtful thing to do. Nice people get scoffed at in today’s society; it is too damn bad.

Lot of people like to report negative things for whatever reason; the positive things that are done by people/teams get glossed over, because that is corny. Kicking people when they’re down is in vogue, but truth is, a hell of a lot more good is done than bad.

You can take this to the bank: the New Jersey Giants are good people. Top-shelf.

Islanders lost their last six games with Montreal; under is 5-3 in last eight series games. Canadiens won their last five visits to Long Island (under 3-1 in last four). Montreal won its last four games, allowing five goals (over 3-3). Islanders won three of last four games (all at home); four of their last five games stayed under.

Home side won last six Boston-NY Ranger games; Bruins lost last three visits to Manhattan by combined score of 10-5. Three of last four series games went over total. Boston lost last two games 4-2/5-0; four of their last five games stayed under. Rangers won three of their last four games (over 3-2-1).

Backup plan: The case to play goalies on consecutive nights

If NHL coaches want to provide goalies quality downtime during a constricted schedule, Martin Biron believes he has an ideal backup plan.

Rather than split starts as teams often do when playing on consecutive days, the former netminder suggests it might be more beneficial to have the starter play both and then sit out the next game.

''If your goalie is going to play Friday, have Saturday off and play the Tuesday game, there's never a time to check out in that time off,'' said Biron, who spent 16 NHL seasons as a starter and backup. ''I'm of the school that thinks it's almost better to play your starter on Friday-Saturday and then not play him until next Friday, and then he has six days of preparation and rest.''

It's not as if goalies aren't accustomed to playing twice in two days.

''Most of the guys that are young played three (games) in three (days) in the American League. They can handle that,'' Biron said. ''I can't speak for (skaters), but as a goalie, once you get your mindset into a game, if you have to extend it for another 24 hours that's fine.''

The goalie balancing act is never simple.

And how much increased playing time backups get will be a pressing issue for a league squeezing in an 82-game schedule in a shortened calendar. The season began a week later than usual because of the World Cup of Hockey and the schedule, for the first time, features each team enjoying a five-day bye week.

Capitals goalie Braden Holtby tends to agree with Biron, saying there's too much concern placed on goalies playing on consecutive nights when, in actuality, the entire team is tired.

''Historically, teams aren't as good on back to backs in general, and goalies go hand in hand,'' Holtby said. ''Goalie stats are a lot to do with how your team performs. That's just the way it is. It's a little bit harder, but it's a little harder for everyone.''

And, Holtby added, it's also hard on a backup goalie being thrust into action with negligible on-ice time because teams don't normally practice the morning before playing their second game.

Holtby's production bears him out.

Over the previous two seasons, Holtby is 12-5-2 when playing both nights, including a 6-2-1 mark on Day 2. He's given up a combined 23 goals on each night.

Kings goalie Jonathan Quick's record is even more impressive. In the 14 times he's played back to backs over the past two years, Quick has allowed 20 goals the first game and just 12 the next with a 5-1-1 record.

The only straggler of the 10 goalies' records analyzed by The Associated Press is Tuukka Rask. The Boston starter is 7-1-3 (plus one no decision) and allowed 18 goals in the first game. He is 2-8-2 with 29 goals allowed the following night.

What's never been up for debate is how critical the backup's role is during a busy stretch or when the starter is sidelined.

Last year, the Montreal Canadiens unraveled once Carey Price went down with a season-ending knee injury in late November. After opening 19-4-3, Montreal finished 38-38-6. The Canadiens addressed their backup spot this offseason by signing veteran Al Montoya in free agency.

The move has already paid off. The eighth-year player is 2-0-2 after Price opened the season sidelined by the flu.

On the other hand, minor leaguer Matt Murray led the Penguins to a Stanley Cup championship after being called up in March once starter Marc-Andre Fleury was sidelined by a concussion.

This year, the Los Angeles Kings are banged-up in net with Quick and backup Jeff Zatkoff both sidelined by groin injuries. They're now leaning on 11-year journeyman Peter Budaj, who won his first two starts.

Biron said it's not uncommon for minor league call-ups to find their groove because they're already accustomed to a starter's workload as opposed to the primary backup who's had less game action.

BY THE NUMBERS

Since 2006, only two goalies have led their team to win a Stanley Cup when playing 60 or more regular-season games.

Quick played 69 times when the Kings won title in 2012, and Fleury played 62 for the 2009 Cup-champion Penguins. On the low-end of the scale, Murray played only 13 regular-season games for Pittsburgh last year. Cam Ward played just 28 during his rookie year in leading the Carolina Hurricanes to the championship in `06.

Of the 10 netminders who played 60 or more games last year, two missed the playoffs: Rask and Ottawa's Craig Anderson. And only two reached the conference finals: Tampa Bay's Ben Bishop and Martin Jones, whose Sharks lost the Cup Final to Pittsburgh.

SLUMPING

The Chicago Blackhawks penalty killers. In allowing two goals on five power-play chances in a 3-2 shootout loss to Calgary on Monday, Chicago has allowed 14 power-play goals on 24 opportunities.

STREAKING

A year after opening 9-0, the Canadiens are 5-0-1 and the NHL's only team yet to lose in regulation.

NEW YORK (AP) Shea Weber scored a power-play goal with 2:57 remaining to lift the Montreal Canadiens to their fifth straight victory, 3-2 over the New York Islanders on Wednesday night.

With the Islanders' Nick Leddy off for slashing, Weber fired a shot from the point. It was just the second power-play goal in 23 opportunities given up by New York's league-leading penalty-killing unit.

Paul Byron and Phillip Danault also scored to help Montreal improve to 6-0-1 and remain the only team in the NHL without a regulation loss.

Al Montoya, who played for the Islanders from 2010-12, stopped 26 shots in his first start since Oct. 18. The Canadiens beat New York for the seventh straight time.

John Tavares and Dennis Seidenberg scored for New York.

RANGERS 5, BRUINS 2

NEW YORK (AP) - Brandon Pirri scored twice to help New York beat Boston.

Rick Nash, Kevin Hayes and Jimmy Vesey also scored for New York, and Henrik Lundqvist stopped 27 shots. The Rangers won their third straight game, overcoming a 2-0 deficit to improve to 5-2-0.

David Pastrnak and Austin Czarina scored for Boston.

Zane McIntyre made 26 saves in his first NHL start. He was called up prior to Boston's 5-0 home loss to Minnesota on Tuesday night to back up Malcolm Subban due to injuries to Tuukka Risk and Anton Khudobin.

Down 2-0 after the first, the Rangers scored three times in the final 10:44 of the second. Pirri's power-play goal with 36 seconds left made it 3-2. He made it 4-2 2:23 into the third.

OILERS 4, CAPITALS 1

EDMONTON, Alberta (AP) - Benoit Pouliot scored twice, Cam Talbot made 34 saves and Edmonton beat Washington to stretch its winning streak to four games.

Patrick Maroon and Milan Lucic also scored for the Oilers. They have won four of five games at Rogers Place, their new downtown arena, and are 6-1-0 overall.

Alex Ovechkin scored for the Capitals, and Braden Holtby made 25 saves.

DUCKS 6, PREDATORS 1

ANAHEIM, Calif. (AP) - Jakob Silfverberg scored a short-handed goal and another on the power play to lead Anaheim.

Nick Ritchie, Corey Perry, Andrew Cogliano and Ryan Kesler also scored for Anaheim, and John Gibson stopped 28 shots, as the Ducks earned a point in their fourth consecutive game and for the fifth time in their last six outings.

Silfverberg had his ninth career multi-goal game, leading a five-goal burst in second period.

Ritchie put the Ducks ahead 2:57 into the first period with his second goal of the season, putting a backhander between Pekka Rinne's pads.

Thursday’s List of 13: NFL knowledge and our top 7

Some notes about how NFL teams have done on the first drive of each half this season: in my mind, the first drive of each game goes to how coaches prepare for their opponent each week.

First drive of the second half goes to halftime adjustments, as much as can be done in 10-12 minutes. Through seven weeks, here is some information:

13) Dallas Cowboys, in six games, have three TDs, two FGs and a missed FG on their first drive of the game, averaging 66.7 yards/drive, by far the best in the NFL thru seven weeks.

12) Three teams have yet to score on their first drive of a game: Arizona, Jacksonville and the Giants, who have only 79 yards on 27 plays on the first drive of their seven games.

11) Saints/Chargers both have four TDs on their first drive, though Saints did that in six games and Chargers seven; New Orleans averages 54.2 yards/first drive, San Diego 47.1.

10) Most surprising that I’ve found so far: Denver has allowed four TDs and a FG on opponents’ first drive of a game- their 31 points allowed on the first drive is 2nd-worst in the NFL.

9) Less surprising is Cleveland’s defense allowing five TDs on its seven game opening drives, with foes gaining an average of 55.9 yards/drive.

8) Giants have been outscored 30-3 on each team’s first drive of each half; Jets have been outscored 35-16. For the Giants, 66 plays, 210 yards (3.2 yards/play) on the first drive of their 14 halves is very poor.

On to the NFL’s top 7 for this week:

7) Chiefs— Andy Reid is this generation’s Chuck Knox— very good coach, wins a lot of games, just not any Super Bowls. Nothing wrong with winning a lot of games.

6) Raiders— 4-0 on the road and all four games were east of Mississippi; this week is #5.

5) Seahawks— Lost 9-3 in LA, tied 6-6 at Arizona, their two games on grass. Won the other four games. Not sure how bad Wilson’s leg injuries are, but if he doesn’t start running around soon, I’ll lose faith in Seattle.

Related point; NBC’s Cris Collinsworth actually grouped Wilson with Brady and Roethlisberger as a pocket passer during Sunday night’s game. Um, no. Not even close.

4) Cowboys— Is it easier for a rookie QB to be without Dez Bryant and not have him calling for the ball all the time? What Jason Garrett has done in the first six games is tremendous- their offensive line is just super.

3) Broncos— Little queasy about having them at #3, but they’re the defending champs and they’re 5-2. I wouldn’t bet your money on them on win the Super Bowl this year.

2) Vikings— Sam Bradford began his NFL career with the Rams, so pardon me if I’m skeptical he can lead the Vikings to the Super Bowl. He just doesn’t stay healthy.

1) Patriots— They head into heir bye week with an actual revenge game this week; Bills beat them in Foxboro in Week 4, the last week of Brady’s suspension and also in all probability, the last NFL action Jacoby Brissett will ever see.

Tampa Bay won five of its first six games, scoring 11 goals in winning its first two road games (over 3-2-1). Montreal won its last four games, outscoring opponents 16-5 (over 3-3).
