      Armadillo: Saturday's six-pack

      — Indians 2, Blue Jays 0– Is Terry Francona changing how bullpens will be used in the future?

      — Louisville 24, Duke 14– Blue Devils hung in until the last 3:00.

      — Oilers 5, Flames 3– Alberta rivals played twice in three nights, now do not play again until January 14.

      — Memphis 24, Tulane 14– Back-door cover for the Green Wave.

      — UNLV’s hoop team is practicing in brand-new T-Mobile Arena while their arena is being prepped for the last Presidential debate.

      — When LA Kings started playing in the NHL 50 years ago, they played six games in Long Beach Arena before moving to the LA Forum.

      **********

Armadillo: Saturday's List of 13: Clearing out a cluttered mind……

      13) Derrick Rose is 28 years old; at the end of this season, he will have earned $117M in salary in his career, not counting his immense sneaker contract and other endorsements. He should be sitting on the top of the world, without any cares except his playing career and his family.

Yet there he is, sitting in a courtroom in Los Angeles, the defendant in a $21M civil suit filed by an ex-girlfriend. Young people who get so rich, so quickly need to hire a life coach, someone to advise them on the pitfalls of fame and fortune, because there are many.

Being really, really rich makes you a target for parasites, being a celebrity means everything you do is fodder for social media and the nightly news. Be above reproach, because given the chance, people will come after you and try to syphon off some of your wealth for their own pockets.

I have zero idea what the truth is in the Rose matter; i just know if I’m advising Mr Rose, I’m telling him to stay the hell out of the way of drama, because he is the person with the most to lose.

      12) Alex Rodriguez went out of his way the other night to praise Indians’ reliever Andrew Miller, as both a pitcher and a person. A-Rod, Pete Rose and Frank Thomas are an interesting combination in the FS1 studio after playoff games.

      11) They were saying on TV the other night that one-third of the people who vote in Ohio will vote before Election Day. It isn’t just absentee ballots, either. How/why does that happen? I’d like to vote early, anything to avoid waiting in line.

      10) San Diego Chargers switched the holder for kicks; backup QB Kellen Clemens was the holder Thursday night, after the backup punter botched a snap on the game-tying FG last week.

I’ve been saying for a while that players should hold for kicks, not punters, but for convenience sake (free time during practice), punters always seem to be the holders.

Back in the day, holders were mostly backup QBs, or guys like Nolan Cromwell (Rams), Karl Noonan (Miami) or Joe Scarpati (Saints) who was the holder for Tom Dempsey’s 63-yard FG for New Orleans.

      9) Davidson’s basketball team has players from seven different countries.

      8) Ottawa Senators have had seven head coaches in the last ten years.

      7) North Carolina Tar Heels have a freshman guard named Seventh Woods; he is the youngest of six kids, his birthday is August 7. He will wear #21 because a) it is a multiple of 7 and b) his dad was born on the 21st. I’m glad the young man wasn’t born on the 29th.

      6) Long Beach State alum Casper Ware is trying to make the Washington Wizards’ roster; he has played pro ball in France, England, Germany and China, as well as nine games with the 76ers three years ago. Have to admire guys who stick with it and work so hard to achieve their dreams.

      5) Obscure baseball record: Norm Cash (377 HRs) holds the major league record for most career homers, without ever hitting a walk-off home run. Mark Teixeira had been the record holder until he hit a walk-off HR in late September.

      4) Atlanta Braves named Brian Snitker full-time manager this week; he led the Braves to a 50-47 record in their last 97 games after a dreadful start under the previous skipper. Atlanta moves into its new stadium in Cobb County next spring.

      3) College teams like South Florida or San Diego State, who play their football games in an NFL stadium? Their rent bill is usually around $250K, per game. UNLV will have to come up with that kind of $$$ to play in a new domed stadium in Las Vegas, if the Raiders move there.

      2) The late Robin Williams was a great comedian/actor; he passed away far too soon. He also really liked cycling; his collection of 87 bicycles is being auctioned off this week, to benefit a couple of Williams’ favorite charities.

1— I’ve mentioned this before, but the NBA preseason is too long; they need to utilize October to stretch the regular season out and eliminate some of the back/backs that cause stars to sit games out and cheat fans (who pay lot of $$$) out of seeing them play..

This is where I point out that a player named Ron Boone (now a broadcaster for the Jazz) once played in 1,041 consecutive games; back then, teams had to play on three consecutive nights now and then and also flew commercial. This was in the 70’s and Boone was a good player— he averaged 16.8 pts/game in his career.

PITTSBURGH (AP) Phil Kessel's power-play goal in the second-period stood as the winner in the Pittsburgh Penguins' 3-2 victory over the Anaheim Ducks on Saturday night.

Ian Cole and Conor Sheary also scored for the Penguins, who have won four straight home games against Anaheim and are 6-1 in their last seven games overall against the Ducks. Marc-Andre Fleury made 33 saves.

Chris Kunitz got his 200th assist with the Penguins in his 500th game with the team. Kunitz, who was acquired from Anaheim in 2009, became the 18th player and fifth active to play 500 games with Pittsburgh.

Corey Perry scored his first of the season and 13th goal in 14 games against Pittsburgh. Cam Fowler scored on the power play for the Ducks, who haven't won in Pittsburgh in more than four years.

Jonathan Bernier stopped 42 shots in his debut with the Ducks.

                  BLACKHAWKS 5, PREDATORS 3

CHICAGO (AP) - Richard Panik scored three goals for his first NHL hat trick, Scott Darling was sharp in making 33 saves and Chicago earned its first victory of the season.

Nick Schmaltz, one of four rookies in Chicago's lineup, scored his first NHL goal and Brent Seabrook added a power-play score and an assist as the Blackhawks rebounded from a 3-2 loss at Nashville on Friday. Patrick Kane and Duncan Keith each had two assists.

Colin Wilson, Craig Smith and Viktor Arvidsson scored for the Predators.

Nashville trailed 3-0 after Schmaltz, Seabrook and Panik scored in a 3:43 span in the first period, and could never pull even in this one.

The Predators outshot Chicago 36-27 and dominated in stretches, but were stymied by Darling in the backup goalie's first start this season.

Nashville backup Marek Mazanec had 22 saves.

                  CAPITALS 2, ISLANDERS 1

WASHIGNTON (AP) - Fourth-line grinder Daniel Winnik scored two goals and Vezina Trophy winner Braden Holtby made 21 saves as Washington beat New York in its home opener.

Winnik's fifth career multi-goal game helped the defending Presidents' Trophy winners bounce back from a season-opening loss at Pittsburgh and earn their first victory. Two of those have come with the Capitals, a good sign as they hope to get more depth scoring.

Ryan Strome scored a power-play goal for the Islanders, who have no points through two games after losing to the New York Rangers on Thursday. Backup goaltender Thomas Greiss stopped 26 of the 28 shots he faced in his first start.

                  SHARKS 3, BLUE JACKETS 2

COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) - Mikkel Boedker and Joel Ward scored for an early lead and Patrick Marleau had a power-play goal, leading San Jose over Columbus.

Martin Jones made 26 saves for San Jose, which beat the Los Angeles Kings 2-1 in its season opener Wednesday.

Zach Werenski and Josh Anderson each got his first goal for Columbus, which has lost its first two games this season.

Boedker scored 9:22 into the first period when a dump-in play by Logan Couture led to a tricky rebound off goaltender Sergei Bobrovsky. The puck was deflected to Boedker, who buried it over Bobrovsky's left shoulder.

                  BLUES 3, RANGERS 2

ST. LOUIS (AP) - Vladimir Tarasenko had a goal and an assist, Carter Hutton stopped 33 shots and St. Louis beat New York.

Tarasenko has three goals in three games for the undefeated Blues after netting 40 last season.

St. Louis has begun the season with three straight wins for the fourth time. St. Louis also started 3-0-0 in 1969-70, 1993-94 and 2013-14.

Hutton got his first win and made several tough saves in his first game with St. Louis. He signed to a two-year, $2.25 million free agent contract on July 1 to back up Jake Allen.

The Rangers outshot St. Louis 35-18, with New York's Henrik Lundqvist making 15 saves.

Chris Kreider and Mika Zibanejad scored for the Rangers. Paul Statsny and Alex Pietrangelo also had goals for St. Louis.

                  PANTHERS 4, RED WINGS 1

SUNRISE, Fla. (AP) - Colton Sceviour scored his first goal for Florida and Aleksander Barkov added his second of the season.

Sceviour signed with the Panthers as a free agent in July.

Vincent Trocheck and Jonathan Marchessault also scored goals for Florida and Marchessault recorded two assists. Jaromir Jagr also had an assist.

Barkov's goal made it 3-1 with 2:22 left and Marchessault added an empty-netter about a minute later. The Panthers won their second straight and the Red Wings fall to 0-2.

Darren Helm scored for Detroit while Petr Mrazek stopped 34 shots for the Red Wings.

Roberto Luongo had 21 saves for the Panthers.

                  AVALANCHE 6, STARS 5

DENVER (AP) - Joe Colborne had three goals for his first NHL hat trick and Colorado withstood a 6-on-4 opportunity over final 46 seconds to hold off Dallas.

Trailing 2-0 early, Colborne scored three of Colorado's next five goals to build a 5-2 lead. Carl Soderberg and Nathan MacKinnon also scored during the stretch, and Tyson Barrie added an insurance goal in the third period to kick off the Jared Bednar Era in winning fashion.

Bednar took over for Patrick Roy after the Hall of Fame goaltender-turned-coach surprisingly stepped away two months ago.

Tyler Seguin had two goals for the Stars, while Devin Shore, Jamie Benn and Brett Ritchie also scored.

Dallas pulled starter Antti Niemi at 7:05 of the second period after allowing five goals. Kari Lehtonen slowed the Avalanche's potent offensive attack so the Stars could work their way back into the game.

                  MAPLE LEAFS 4, BRUINS 1

TORONTO (AP) - Rookies Mitch Marner and Connor Brown scored, helping Toronto roll over Boston for its first win of the season.

James van Riemsdyk and Milan Michalek also scored for the Maple Leafs, while Frederik Andersen made 24 saves for his first win with Toronto.

Anton Khudobin allowed four goals on 20 shots for Boston. David Pastrnak scored his third goal in two games this season.

One of six rookies in Toronto's lineup, Brown opened the scoring with his second career goal just over 2 minutes into the first. The 22-year-old Toronto native pounced on Matt Hunwick's point shot that caromed off a pile of bodies in front of Khudobin, shooting it high for the 1-0 lead.

                  LIGHTNING 3, DEVILS 2

TAMPA, Fla. (AP) - Valtteri Filppula scored the go-ahead goal on a nifty redirection early in the third period and Tampa Bay beat New Jersey.

Steven Stamkos and Alex Killorn also scored for the Lightning, who have opened the season with two comeback wins after trailing by two early on in both games.

The Devils got goals from Kyle Palmieri and Travis Zajac. New Jersey lost its season opener 2-1 in overtime Thursday night at Florida.

Filppula was positioned in the slot and had his thigh-high deflection of Jason Garrison's shot elude Cory Schneider at 5:43. Rookie Brayden Point also assisted on the goal to get his first NHL point.

                  WILD 4, JETS 3

ST. PAUL, Minn. (AP) - Eric Staal and Chris Stewart each got their first goal with Minnesota since being acquired in the offseason, helping the Wild overcome a two-goal deficit.

Stewart scored to start the comeback and assisted on Matt Dumba's power-play goal that tied it, then Staal made it 3-2 as the Wild erased the 2-0 deficit with a three-goal second period.

Devan Dubnyk made 14 saves for Minnesota, which is now 14-0-2 in its home openers at the Xcel Energy Center. Jonas Brodin added a goal for the Wild.

Nikolaj Ehlers, Blake Wheeler and Mark Schiefele scored for Winnipeg. Michael Hutchinson stopped 27 shots for the Jets.

                  COYOTES 4, FLYERS 3, OT

GLENDALE, Ariz. (AP) - Oliver Ekman-Larsson scored at 1:48 of overtime and Arizona kicked off its 20th season in the desert with a win over Philadelphia.

The Flyers dominated the early part of overtime, but Mike Smith made a sprawling save on Matt Read and the Coyotes were able to clear.

The Coyotes used quick passing to get the puck to Ekman-Larsson, who gathered the feed from Martin Hanzal and lifted it over a diving Steve Mason on a delayed penalty.

Hanzal also had a goal, along with Shane Doan and Brad Richardson for the Coyotes. Smith stopped 27 shots.

Read, Michael Raffl and Wayne Simmonds scored for the Flyers. Mason stopped 31 shots.

                  SENATORS 4, CANADIENS 3

OTTAWA, Ontario (AP) - Erik Karlsson scored the winner in the shootout to lift Ottawa over Montreal.

Tom Pyatt, Ryan Dzingel and Zack Smith scored in regulation for the Senators, who have won two straight to open the season. Craig Anderson made 21 saves.

Jeff Petry scored twice and Artturi Lehkonen got his first NHL goal for the Canadiens. Al Montoya stopped 35 shots.

Pyatt tied the score 3-3 off a great pass from Dzingel to beat Montoya stick side with 2:33 remaining in the third period.

Dzingel and Smith scored in the first period to put the Senators up 2-0. Petry's power-play goal late in the second got the Canadiens on the scoreboard. Lehkonen tied it early in the third and Petry's second put Montreal at the 9-minute mark.

                  CANUCKS 2, FLAMES 1, OT

VANCOUVER, British Columbia (AP) - Brandon Sutter scored the only goal of the shootout to give Vancouver a victory over Calgary.

Sutter beat Chad Johnson through the five-hole on the winner in the fourth round of the tiebreaker after Ryan Miller stopped the Flames' shooters at the other end.

Daniel Sedin scored in regulation for the Canucks, who got 24 saves from Miller in their season opener.

Troy Brouwer was credited with the game's first goal in the opening period after Canucks forward Loui Eriksson, who was making his Vancouver debut, put the puck into his own net on a delayed Calgary penalty.

Johnson made 30 stops in his first start for the Flames, who have started the season with three losses (0-2-1).

Preview: Ducks (0-2) at Islanders (0-2)
                    Date: October 16, 2016 6:00 PM EDT

NEW YORK -- Two winless teams looking to ensure a slow start doesn't snowball into something more serious will meet Sunday night when the New York Islanders host the Anaheim Ducks in the home opener at Barclays Center.

Both teams fell to 0-2-0 with narrow road losses to Eastern Conference powerhouses Saturday, when the Islanders lost to the reigning Presidents' Trophy-winning Washington Capitals 2-1 and the Ducks dropped a 3-2 decision to the defending Stanley Cup champion Pittsburgh Penguins.

The Islanders, who are entering their second season at Barclays Center, are pointless through two games for the first time since 2006-07, which was the last time they opened 0-3-0. The Ducks are pointless after two games for the first time since 2010-11, which was also the most recent season in which they got off to an 0-3-0 start.

"They're playing (Saturday), too, so no excuse for tired legs," Islanders left winter Jason Chimera said.

Especially for the Islanders, who merely had to take a train into Manhattan for Thursday's 5-3 loss to the crosstown New York Rangers before trekking 230 miles down I-95 to face the Capitals.

"We've got to come back," Chimera said. "We need to get in the win column, for sure."

The Ducks, who are in the midst of a five-game road trip that is the franchise's longest season-opening trip since 1996-97, lost 4-2 at the Dallas Stars on Thursday before heading to Pittsburgh.

"It's a tough road trip to begin the season," right winger Corey Perry, who scored one of the Ducks' goals, told the Orange County Register. "We need that first win to get us going and get the confidence up again."

At least one streak will end Sunday: Neither the Islanders nor Ducks have led in their first two games.

"We can measure our game by the number of mistakes that we feel we made that are correctable," Ducks head coach Randy Carlyle told the Orange County Register. "And our team's not playing to the level that's required right now from our group. Simple as that."

Thomas Greiss started in net and took the hard-luck loss, stopping 26 of 28 shots. No. 1 goalie Jaroslav Halak is expected to start for New York on Sunday. Halak is 7-5-0 in 13 career games against the Ducks and won the last time he opposed Anaheim on Dec., 21, 2015, when he had 27 saves in a 3-2 win at Barclays Center.

For the Ducks, No. 1 goalie John Gibson is also likely to draw the start after backup Jonathan Bernier performed well (42 saves) in defeat Saturday.

Gibson made his only career appearance against the Islanders last Dec. 21 when he relieved Frederik Andersen after a three-goal first period and stopped 18 of 19 shots he faced the rest of the way.

Preview: Sabres (0-1) at Oilers (2-0)
                      Date: October 16, 2016 7:00 PM EDT

EDMONTON, Alberta -- The Buffalo Sabres marketing slogan for the 2016-17 NHL season is "Sharpen Your Swords."

Judging by the team's long injury list, maybe it should be "don't play around sharp objects." After losing their home opener Thursday to Montreal, the Sabres jet to Western Canada to begin a four-game road trip that opens Sunday at Rogers Place against the Edmonton Oilers (2-0-0).

The Oilers turned back the clock to the high-flying 1980s in their two wins over the Calgary Flames to open the season. Edmonton scored 12 goals in the two wins, and center Connor McDavid already has six points.

"I don't really know what to say, he's phenomenal, he's just that good," said Oilers center Leon Draisaitl, who had a three-point night against Calgary on Friday, about McDavid. "He makes something happen, every single shift, out of nothing, where you think there's nothing going on and he creates an absolute top, grade-A chance."

"He's got all the skills and tools," said Edmonton coach Todd McLellan of McDavid's red-hot start. "He's got a toolbox that's second to none. His mind and the way he sees the rink and the players on the ice surface. And he does things fast and slow, so you're never really sure (as a defenseman) if you should go or you shouldn't go."

The Oilers haven't made the playoffs for a decade but, thanks to the hot start and the Sabres' poor health, will be heavy favorites on Sunday.

For Buffalo, the talk is about who won't be going on this road trip. Before the season began, 2015 No. 2 overall draft pick Jack Eichel (56 points last season) went down in practice with a high ankle sprain and will miss a minimum of one month. Then, left winger Evander Kane left Thursday's opener and was taken to hospital after crashing heavily into the boards.

He suffered three cracked ribs and is expected to be out for "weeks," according to coach Dan Bylsma.

"There's a little bit of shake your head and snake bitten a little bit, but it's kinda come in droves," said Bylsma."But it's part of our game we're playing -- you know you're going to have injuries, you expect to have them throughout your lineup and, unfortunately, you have a rash of them. That's no excuse for how we need to play and how we can play and we got to keep fighting through it."

"It sucks losing players," said Sabres netminder Robin Lehner. "But we've got to find a way, just work even more and we have to look to Edmonton on Sunday. ... We can't think too much about it, we all have got to step up."

There is some good news for Buffalo as Kyle Okposo, who scored 22 goals with the Islanders last season but hurt his knee in training camp and missed the home opener, is on the trip and is expected be available for Sunday.

Like Okposo, defenseman Dmitry Kulikov missed the opener due to injury (back) but could skate against the Oilers.

To make up numbers on the roster, the Sabres called up right winger Nicholas Baptiste from their AHL affiliate in Rochester, N.Y. on Saturday.

Edmonton defenseman Adam Larsson did not practice with the team on Saturday.

Preview: Hurricanes (0-0) at Canucks (1-0)
                        Date: October 16, 2016 10:00 PM EDT

VANCOUVER, British Columbia -- The Vancouver Canucks know plenty about the goaltender that they will face Sunday night -- but not much else about the Carolina Hurricanes.

Eddie Lack, who spent five seasons with the Canucks organization, will start in goal for the Hurricanes (0-1-0) as they visit the Canucks (1-0-0) at Rogers Arena. But the Western Conference-based Canucks seldom battle the Eastern Conference-based Hurricanes due to the NHL's imbalanced schedule.

So Canucks winger Jannik Hansen needed only one word to describe what he knows about the 'Canes.

"Nothing," said Hansen on Saturday night. "Maybe if Eddie Lack is in net, I know a little bit about them."

He and the Canucks will soon discover that the Hurricanes are a young, fast offensively talented team considered to be on the rise -- and, sometimes, they have decent goaltending. Lack will make his first start of the season as the Hurricanes try to make amends for a season-opening loss to the Jets in Winnipeg on Thursday.

Cam Ward will back him up after playing in Winnipeg.

"I'm very, very excited," Lack told The Vancouver Province after the Hurricanes skated in Vancouver on Saturday. "Just being back and seeing old friends, and getting the season going for me."

As a team, the Hurricanes are not feeling that good about their season opener. Carolina squandered a 4-1 third-period lead before bowing 5-4 in overtime to the Jets.

Lack will be looked upon to help his team tighten up defensively. That might not be difficult against the low-scoring Canucks, who won their season opener Saturday by edging the Calgary Flames 2-1 on former Hurricane Brandon Sutter's winning goal in overtime.

Although the Hurricanes have had a couple days of rest in Vancouver, the Canucks will be playing their second of back-to-back home games as they attempt to get off to a strong start at home.

"It's a quick turnaround," Hansen said. "Let's get these back-to-backs out of the way early in the season when you are still feeling fresh and clear in the head."

Hansen will try to beat the loquacious Lack on the ice after trading barbs with him in the dressing room during the goaltender's two full seasons with the Canucks before he was traded to Carolina prior to the 2015-16 season.

Lack, who also spent three seasons with Vancouver's farm teams while getting occasional call-ups, will also try to get the upper hand on old friend and fellow Swede Jakob Markstrom, who will make his first start in goal this season for the Canucks.

After being acquired from Florida in 2013-14 as part of the Roberto Luongo trade, Markstrom toiled mainly in the minors while he and Lack were in the Canucks organization together.

But even after Lack played reasonably well in 41 stars in 2014-15, Vancouver general manager Jim Benning decided to send him to the Hurricanes in the offseason.

Lack will make his second appearance against the Canucks since he was sent packing in exchange for a pair of 2015 and 2016 draft picks. A strong showing against the Canucks could launch his bid for more consistency this season.

Lack went 1-4-1, with a 3.28 goals against average and a .874 save percentage, in his first seven appearances with Carolina in 2015-16. He rebounded to finish with a 12-14-6 record. But the numbers paled in comparison to the 34-30-9 mark, 2.43 goals against average and .917 save percentage that he posted in two seasons as a full-fledged member of the Canucks.

"The start I had last year was horrendous," he told The Vancouver Province. "I feel like I've done a good job this summer, putting everything behind me. I feel like I'm ready to go."

Lack prepared for the start by digesting some tacos Saturday afternoon. He became known for his love of the traditional Mexican dish during his days in Vancouver. So he had tacos waiting for his teammates after they finished their practice.

"They asked if I could order something," Lack told The Vancouver Province. "Obviously, I had to order that -- right?"

If Canucks defenseman Ben Hutton has his way, the Canucks will dish out a strong effort against the Hurricanes.

"We know they are a good team," Hutton told reporters. "They've got some good players and they are fast. We are going to have to come prepared."

Hutton, a second-year rearguard who joined the Canucks after Lack left, is also known for his easy going nature. But he was stressing the need for self-discipline."

"Back-to-back, we have to come out of the gate strong," he said. "It's a lot about us, not really them. We have to control us and stick to our systems and stay within our structure and it should be fine."

Accordingly, he was not willing to allow his teammates to let the possibility of fatigue from two games in as many nights enter their heads.

"It's going to be tough, but it's also good," said Hutton. "You get right into it. There should be no excuses for being tired."

                          Armadillo: Sunday's six-pack

Six most popular picks in this week’s Westgate Super Contest:

                          1) Chiefs (even) 704

                          2) Seahawks (-6.5) 450

                          3) Packers (-4.5) 448

                          4) Texans (-3) 424

                          5) Eagles (-2.5) 410

                          6) Falcons +6.5 (404)– Lot of action both ways in this game.

                          **********

Armadillo: Sunday's List of 13: Wrapping up a sports Saturday……..

                          13) Clemson 24, NC State 17 OT— Tigers GOT SO LUCKY in this game; Wolfpack had a 33-yard FG to win it at the gun, but the kicker choked and pushed it wide right. Clemson should drop in the polls this week; key word there is “should”.

                          12) Arkansas 34, Ole Miss 30— Want to thank both teams for 3.5 hours of solid entertainment. Didn’t care who won, but it was a close, interesting game between two good teams, and it was fun to watch. I’m not a big fan of Arkansas coach Bielema, who is now 8-19 in SEC games, but this is a solid win for him.

                          11) Upset of the Day: Syracuse (+19.5) 31. Virginia Tech 17— Dino Babers gave an emotional post-game talk to his team, where he quoted the Vegas spread on this game. Go find it on the Interweb, it is worth it. Will he recruit well enough/stay long enough to make the Orangemen relevant?

                          10) Stanford 17, Notre Dame 10— Cardinal star McCaffery didn’t play, Irish led 10-0 before Stanford scored a defensive TD, then a safety. Notre Dame is now 2-5; this was a very bad loss, after the Washington schools eviscerated Stanford the last two weeks.

Random tangent: Why doesn’t NBC have Notre Dame alums doing color on Notre Dame games? Have a different guy do it every home game: Theismann, Golic, Tim Brown, Ismail, Bettis, Reggie Ho. Doug Flutie went to BC; why is he on there?

                          9) Temple 26, Central Florida 25— Knights led 25-7, I turned game off but Owls rallied for the win, scoring GW TD with 0:01 left. AAC games are oddly entertaining.

Houston 38, Tulsa 31– 21-point favorite Cougars stopped Tulsa on the one-yard line on the last play of the game.

                          8) Northwestern 54, Michigan State 40— Wildcats have now covered seven games in a row in East Lansing, winning five of the seven SU. No explanation for this, but wheels have fallen off for Michigan State this season- they’ve now lost four games in a row.

                          7) Indians 2, Blue Jays 1— Teams head to Canada with Cleveland up 2-0. Andrew Miller is first reliever EVER with 5+ strikeouts in consecutive playoff games.

Cubs 7, Dodgers 3— I had Miguel Montero on my fantasy team this summer and was happy to get two pick ups from the scrap heap for him in a trade; now he is a playoff hero. Life makes no sense sometimes.

Cubs last won a World Series in 1908; the last living player from that team passed away……in 1961. Indians haven’t won a Series since 1948. Lot of anxiety in those two fanbases.

                          6) North Carolina 20, Miami 13— Not many teams beat Florida State/Miami in same year; both UNC wins came on road (and they lost 34-3 at home in the game between those two- go figure). Huge win for Larry Fedora’s program; hats off to him!!!

                          5) Eastern Michigan 27, Ohio U 20— Tip of the Armadillo’s cap to Eastern Michigan coach Chris Creighton, who was a QB in his playing days at D-III Kenyon College (Shaka Smart’s alma mater). From 2012-15, Eastern was 7-41; they’re 5-2 this year, one win from the Eagles’ first bowl game since 1987 (their only bowl game). Mr Creighton is going to get some job offers.

                          4) Alabama 49, Tennessee 10— On last four Satudays, Vols played Florida-Georgia-Texas A&M-Alabama; no off weeks, way too tough a stretch for a college team. Alabama just killed them here, running ball for 438 yards on 49 carries. Now the Vols can regroup during a bye week and finish their season strong. Whoever made Tennessee’s schedule needs a pay cut.

                          3) Whoever invented the TV camera-in-the-pylon thing deserves a pay raise. They get some interesting views from that camera in the end zone.

                          2) Ohio State 30, Wisconsin 23 OT– Coaches get more out of close wins than routs; Buckeyes survived a stiff test here, made them a better team. Tough loss for the Badgers, who played their hearts out.

                          1) Florida State 17, Wake Forest 6— Much like Tennessee, Seminoles need a week off to get healthy and just recharge some- they’re off this week, then play Clemson. Watching the reality show about FSU on Showtime, they seem like a tired group, maybe with not as much depth as recent years.
