            Wednesday’s six-pack

            — Buffalo Bills have won four games in a row for the first time since 2008; they haven’t made the playoffs since 1999.

            — Colorado Buffaloes are 7-0 vs spread this year, only college team with a perfect spread record. Oregon Ducks are 0-5, only team with a perfectly bad record against the number.

            — Arizona State had an outdoor basketball practice last week, something designed to pump up support in the community. UNLV did same thing last year; they had a practice downtown on a portable court.

            — Carolina Panthers have played in two Super Bowls; they started the next season 1-5 both times.

            — After a lot of public/private jostling, the Big X will stay at ten teams for the time being, so no football championship game for them, for now.

            — I bought Halloween candy yesterday; what are the odds the bags stay closed until October 31st?

Wednesday’s List of 13: Our readers have their say……

The other day, I posed this question: “If you could change one thing in the world, what would it be?” Here are the answer some of my readers provided…….

            13) Unretired Buckeye: “Fix the mess we’ve caused with the environment/climate.”

            12) The Professor agrees: “Gotta do something seriously about climate change, and fast.”

            11) Then there is this from Baseball Guy: “I’d get rid of the designated hitter. I hate the DH more than I hate climate change.”

            10) Football dad: “I wouldn’t have bit on a fake in my last HS football game and I would’ve intercepted the pass that turned into the game-winning TD for our arch-rivals.”

            9) Rebel Girl: “As cheesy as it sounds, world peace would be wonderful.”

            8) Santa Monica’s finest: “People would have a fundamental understanding/appreciation for liberty— what it is, why it is important and why it must be upheld.”

            7) Sean F: “The next President of the United States.”

            6) Wolf Pack mom: “Too many people are shady, mean and cruel. We need harder laws and tougher punishments.”

            5) JJ Arias: “#people”

            4) Bartending Engineer: “Human equality. People should be all be treated the same, regardless of age, sex, religion. The fact that they’re not is ridiculous.”

            3) Bayou Babe: “I’d change myself, make myself bolder, fiercer, more charismatic, fearless.”

            2) Basketball dad: “I’d let kids go straight from high school to the NBA, just like Lebron did. Kids playing one year of college ball is a farce and hurts both college ball and the NBA.”

            1) Me: “I wish we would treat each other with more respect and a tolerance of our differences.”

                    • Preview: Red Wings (1-2) at Rangers (2-1)
                      Date: October 19, 2016 8:00 PM EDT

The Detroit Red Wings suffered one of the bigger losses of the summer when center Pavel Datsyuk decided to ostensibly retire to and return home to Russia. He wanted to spend more time with his family and play in the Kontinental Hockey League, and the Red Wings allowed him to do so.

How much the Red Wings feel the absence of the future Hall of Famer remains to be seen. The team dropped their first two games of the season before breaking through for their first win Monday, a 5-2 thumping of the Ottawa Senators at Joe Louis Arena.

General manager Ken Holland signed free-agent center Frans Nielsen to fill Datsyuk's roster spot, but the group effort the Red Wings showed against the Senators will be the formula for success in the post-Datsyuk era, which continues against the New York Rangers at Madison Square Garden on Wednesday night.

Defenseman Mike Green had a hat trick, the team scored two power-play goals and nine players had points, including new acquisition Thomas Vanek, who had three assists. Unlike their season-opening loss to the Tampa Bay Lightning, when they squandered a lead, the Red Wings pulled away after grabbing a 3-0 advantage in the first period.

"Right now as a team, we've got to learn how to get more comfortable and play better with the lead," Vanek said to the Detroit Free Press. "We saw it in Tampa, too -- we were great, had lots of energy, got the lead, and then sat back. We did the same until (Green made it 4-1), and then we got better again."

The Rangers have won two of three games to start the season and had to stave off a third-period push in both victories.

A 2-0 lead against the New York Islanders on Thursday became a 2-2 game in the third period before the Rangers pulled away. On Monday, the San Jose Sharks cut a 5-2 lead to 5-4 late in the third period before the Rangers scored a pair of empty-net goals to secure the victory.

"I think we played pretty smart," Rangers goaltender Antti Raanta said. "There are some things we can do better but we know what we can do protecting the lead. Of course when you have a three-goal lead and there are only four or five minutes left, sometimes it's mental things. You give them a little bit and suddenly it's back to 5-4. It's good to practice those things when it's a one-goal game like that."

It may be tough for the Rangers to play better defensively, as they could again be without Kevin Klein and Dan Girardi. Klein's status should be decided by Rangers coach Alain Vigneault on Wednesday morning.

"We know teams are going to surge when they are down," Rangers captain Ryan McDonagh said, "and I think in certain areas we're still trying to work on and make sure that we don't get hurt like that as we continue here."

The past six meetings between the Rangers and Red Wings have been decided by one goal, with four going to overtime.

"There aren't any teams in this league that aren't quality," Rangers left winger Chris Kreider "There's an unbelievable amount of parity. So it's going to be another test for us. We'll enjoy (beating San Jose) for about five minutes and then get ready for Detroit."

                      • Preview: Maple Leafs (1-0) at Jets (1-2)
                        Date: October 19, 2016 8:00 PM EDT

WINNIPEG, Manitoba -- Auston Matthews and Patrik Laine will forever be linked as the top two selections in last spring's NHL draft, and the rivalry between the two -- whether they like it or not -- officially starts Wednesday night at the MTS Centre.

Matthews and the Toronto Maple Leafs visit the Winnipeg Jets for their first battle of the season. There is no question Matthews, an Arizona-born center, made the bigger splash thus far, albeit over a two-game body of work.

The 19-year-old scored a quartet of goals in his first NHL game, a 5-4 loss to the Ottawa Senators, becoming the first player in league history to accomplish such a feat. Laine followed up the next evening with a goal and an assist in a 5-4 victory over the Carolina Hurricanes.

The duo cooled off since, with Matthews being held off the scoresheet in a 4-1 victory over Boston on Saturday while Laine posted a pair of goose eggs in losses to both the Minnesota Wild (4-3) and the Bruins (4-1).

They don't award the Calder Trophy in October -- despite what many observers in Toronto seem to think -- so hockey fans can look forward to another six months of comparisons and dueling highlights. There are also a large number of other first-year players throughout the NHL who may have something to say about the end-of-year rookie hardware.

Matthews, for one, isn't buying into the hype.

"We're on our own teams now," he told the Toronto Sun following practice Tuesday. "It's not any comparison, not one against the other. It's just another game. We have 80 more of them. It's the Toronto Maple Leafs against Winnipeg Jets."

Laine concurred, telling a media scrum on Tuesday that they will each follow their own careers.

"I don't need any rivalry between us. I just focus on my own job," the 18-year-old Finland native said.

                        Whatever you say, fellas.

Jets coach Paul Maurice and Leafs bench boss Paul Maurice are also quick to downplay the comparisons, noting Matthews is a center while Laine plays on the right wing.

The dynamic duo will be far from the only rookies in this game. Laine is joined by forwards Kyle Connor and Brandon Tanev and defenseman Josh Morrissey, while Matthews has right winger Connor Brown and center Mitch Marner as teammates.

Fans of the WHA Jets will also get their fix on Wednesday evening as the famed Hot Line of Bobby Hull, Ulf Nilsson and Anders Hedberg will be inducted into the Jets' newly minted Hall of Fame.

Hull won't able to attend for personal reasons, but the two Swedish superstars arrived in Winnipeg late Tuesday evening.

Graying stars of yesteryear from the Jets and Oilers started to trickle into town a few days prior to the Heritage Classic's alumni game Saturday, but it will turn into a geyser over the next couple of days as the likes of Wayne Gretzky, Mark Messier and Jari Kurri from the Oilers and Teemu Selanne and Dale Hawerchuk from the Jets touch down.

WINNIPEG, Manitoba (AP) Rookie Patrik Laine completed a hat trick 2:40 into overtime, helping Winnipeg overcome a four-goal deficit and beat Toronto 5-4 on Wednesday night.

Laine tied the game with 55 seconds left in the third before winning it in overtime. Laine has four goals on the season, tying fellow rookie Auston Matthews and three others for the NHL lead.

Toronto led 4-0 early in the second period on two goals from Nazem Kadri and one each from Connor Carrick and William Nylander.

Tyler Myers and Mark Scheifele also scored for the Jets.

Michael Hutchinson made 36 saves for Winnipeg, and Frederik Andersen had 29 saves for Toronto.

                              RED WINGS 2, RANGERS 1

NEW YORK (AP) - Jimmy Howard made 32 saves to lead Detroit.

Thomas Vanek and Drew Miller scored for Detroit, which improved to 2-2-0.

After beginning the season with two straight losses, the Red Wings have won consecutive games.

The Rangers outshot Detroit 33-18 for the game and Howard was forced into making highlight reel stops to keep the Red Wings in the game.

New York led 1-0 as Mika Zibanejad redirected Ryan McDonagh's slap shot from the right point past Howard 1:09 into the game.

                              • Thursday’s six-pack

Some football trends to consider for Week 7………

                                — Chicago is 7-17-1 vs spread in last 25 NFC North games.

                                — Falcons covered seven of their last nine games.

                                — Patriots are 5-13 vs spread in last 18 games as a road favorite.

                                — Houston is 10-4-1 vs spread in its last fifteen games.

                                — Oakland covered its last six road games.

                                — Seattle is 10-5 vs spread in last fifteen NFC West games.

                                Thursday’s List of 13: NFL’s top 10 and bottom 3……

                                32) Browns— Jimmy Haslam owns the Browns; apparently his brother Bill is the governor of Tennessee. Wonder if they bet on last week’s game with the Titans and if so, did the governor give his brother seven points?

                                31) 49ers— San Francisco has allowed 42 pts/game in losing all three road games- they’ve been outscored 54-17 in second half of their last two games.

                                30) Jets— Geno Smith gets the nod under center for Gang Green this week; not sure why they have four QB’s, two who have never played in the NFL, but they do. Short week this week for their game with the Ravens.

                                10) Steelers— Ready to drop them out of top 10 until Big Ben returns, but there isn’t anyone better to put ahead of them this week. Landry Jones has started two NFL games but didn’t last long in the one Steelers won.

                                9) Raiders— Why are they getting points in Jacksonville this week? They’re 3-0 on the road.

                                8) Bills— So much for trying to have balance on offense. Rex Ryan wanted them to run the ball more, so he fired the OC and told the new guy to run it more, which they have, and very well.

                                7) Redskins— Jay Gruden was a head coach for 162 games in the Arena League and UFL before he got his chance in the NFL— he’s a really good coach who paid his dues.

                                6) Broncos— Not sold on either of their QBs, but their defense is really good and they’re still the defending champs.

                                5) Seahawks— They’ve slipped some but with 14 rookies and a veteran core, expect them to play better as the season rolls along.

                                4) Cowboys— Why would you replace Dak Prescott? Dallas won their last five games, they won easily at Green Bay, Cowboys have it rolling. Don’t mess with a winning streak.

                                3) Falcons— Was just as impressed with them in their loss in Seattle as I was by their wins. Atlanta gained 269 yards IN THE THIRD QUARTER at Seattle last week.

                                2) Patriots— Wonder if Microsoft stock will take a hit now that Belichick has disowned the tablets teams use on the sideline.

                                1) Vikings— Sam Bradford went thru training camp with the Eagles, now he goes back to Philly in Week 7 as the starting QB of the hottest team in the league.
