NEW YORK (AP) Josh Bailey scored 54 seconds into overtime to give the New York Islanders a 3-2 victory over the Anaheim Ducks in their home opener Sunday night.

Brock Nelson and John Tavares scored for the Islanders and Jaroslav Halak stopped 24 shots to get New York its first win of the season after opening with two road losses.

Cam Fowler and Ryan Getzlaf scored in the third period for the Ducks and John Gibson finished with 27 saves. Anaheim fell to 0-2-1 on its season-opening five-game trip.

The Ducks trailed 2-0 in the third before rallying to tie it.

EDMONTON, Alberta (AP) - Ryan O'Reilly had two goals and two assists and Buffalo pounded Edmonton for its first victory of the season.

Brian Gionta also scored twice, and Kyle Okposo and Matt Moulson had Buffalo's other goals. Robin Lehner made 31 saves.

Benoit Pouliot and Milan Lucic scored for the Oilers, who had won back-to-back games before the loss.

Cam Talbot stopped 17 shots for Edmonton. Jonas Gustavsson relieved Talbot in the second period and stopped the only shot he faced before exiting with an injury about 10 minutes later.

Titans 28, Browns 26— Bad beat if you laid 7.5 with Tennessee; Browns scored 13 points in last 2:07 to cover spread, as they fall to 0-6 SU (3-3 vs spread). Titans averaged 10.4 yards/pass attempt, best in league so far this week. Browns went 3/out seven times, scored the other five times (three TD, two FG) they had the ball.

Giants 27, Ravens 23— All six Raven games were decided by 6 or less points. Baltimore scored with 2:04 left to take lead, but neglected to cover Beckham (DB fell down) on a 4th-and-1 a few minutes later and he went 66 yards for GW TD. Beckham caught eight balls for 222 yards and two TDs.

Bills 45, 49ers 16— When Buffalo fired their OC after Week 2, they said they wanted to run the ball more; Bills won their fourth straight game here, running ball 44 times for 312 yards- they converted 8-13 on 3rd down, have outscored last three opponents 45-9 in second half.

Saints 41, Panthers 38— New Orleans led 21-0 with 4:00 left in first half, but Carolina tied game with 2:58 left in game, before Saints hit 52-yard FG with 0:11 left for the win. Saints won their last two games, despite allowing 72 points in those games- they’ve allowed 34+ points in four of five games. Defending NFC champs are 1-5.

Redskins 27, Eagles 20— Philly scored two TDs, one on the NFL’s first TD on a kick return this year, then the defense scored one, but the Eagle offense ran 45 plays for 239 yards; they had 114 yards in penalties, no TDs, as Washington had 67-45 edge in plays run. Yardage here was 493-239. Redskins, like Buffalo, have now won four in a row after an 0-2 start.

Dolphins 30, Steelers 15— Miami was +2 in turnovers, had 14-yard edge in field position and beat Pittsburgh for just second time in last seven meetings, first time at home since 1998. Yardage was 474-297 Miami; after the game, Steelers said Roethlisberger will have an MRI on his knee, which would make Landry Jones the starter next week.

Jaguars 17, Bears 16— Chicago was in red zone four times, but scored only one TD; they led 13-0 after three quarters, but left door open for Jaguars, who hit a 51-yard TD pass with 2:49 left for a stunning comeback win. Bears were +2 in turnovers but had 10 penalties for 87 yards.

Chiefs 26, Raiders 10— Andy Reid is now 16-2 SU off a bye week, 12-4 vs spread in last 16 post-bye games; his Chiefs ran ball for 183 yards on a rainy day in Oakland. KC has now won six of last seven games against its arch-rival, winning four of last six visits to Oakland.

Cowboys 30, Packers 16— Its none of my business, but Dak Prescott has to stay the starting QB in Dallas, as long as they keep playing like this- they waxed the Packers on the day when Brett Favre got his Hall of Fame ring. Cowboys won/covered five games in a row with a rookie QB drafted in the fourth round. Highly unlikely story.

Seahawks 27, Falcons 26— Refs swallowed their whistle on Falcons’ last gasp pass to Julio Jones— Sherman grabbed his arm, no flag was thrown. Seattle led 17-3 at the half, but Atlanta stormed back and had ball around midfield up 24-23 with 4:00 left, before Ryan threw a pick that turned game in Seahawks’ favor. Falcons gained 269 yards in this game, just in the third quarter. These teams could meet again in January.

Texans 26, Colts 23 OT– Indy led 23-9 with under 4:00 left, then Texans came alive and Osweiler gets a big win, keeping Houston alone in first in AFC South. Next week the Texans head to Denver, Osweiler’s homecoming after he bolted the Broncos last winter. Bad loss for Indy, just a game you cannot lose, being up 14 points in last 4:00.

Rangers won three of last four games with San Jose; under is 4-0-1 in last five series games. Sharks lost three of last four visits to Manhattan. San Jose won its first two games, allowing a total of three games (under 2-0). Rangers split their first two games (over 1-0-1).

Penguins won eight of last ten games with Colorado; four of last six series games stayed under. Avalanche lost four of last five visits to Pittsburgh (under 3-2). Colorado won its opener 6-5 at home over Dallas. Pittsburgh won its first three games, allowing a total of five goals (under 1-0-2).

Detroit won three of last four games with Ottawa; four of last six series games stayed under the total. Senators split their last four visits here. Ottawa won its first two games, one in a SO, one in OT (over 2-0). Detroit lost its first two games, outscored 10-5 (over 1-0-1).

Preview: Sharks (2-0) at Rangers (1-1)

NEW YORK -- The banged-up New York Rangers defense suffered another injury, which means they will be further depleted when they host the high-powered San Jose Sharks at Madison Square Garden on Monday night.

Kevin Klein, the Rangers' top right-handed defenseman, missed the team's first two games with a back strain. During the Rangers' 3-2 loss to the St. Louis Blues on Saturday night, fellow right-handed defenseman Dan Girardi left the game with a hip flexor strain and may miss extended time.

Coach Alain Vigneault said he expects Girardi to be "a little bit more than day-to-day."

If Klein misses his third straight game, the Rangers defense would be down to two regulars from a season ago -- Ryan McDonagh and Marc Staal. It's likely that Dylan McIlrath, sporadically used last season and a healthy scratch the first two games, would make his season debut.

It will be a tough task against the Sharks, who had the NHL's best road record a season ago and returned most of the roster that reached the 2016 Stanley Cup Final. They added the speedy left winger Mikkel Boedker in free agency, and he was helpful as the Sharks improved to 2-0 with a 3-2 road win against the Columbus Blue Jackets on Saturday.

Boedker and linemates right winger Joonas Donskoi and center Logan Couture generated several chances in the win, although they did not register a point. The Sharks' depth could prove to be a challenge against the depleted Rangers.

"We play well together," Boedker said to the San Jose Mercury News on Saturday. "A lot of talk and helping each other out. I think it's a key component to the success we've had the last two games. We have to continue that and continue to play the way we can play."

"I thought that line was pretty good again, (Boedker) in particular," Sharks coach Peter DeBoer said to the San Jose Mercury News. "He created quite a bit of stuff and could have had at least another one and set up a couple guys. He was one of our better guys."

While both teams have played well at even strength, they each enjoyed a game in which they had 12 power-play shots, slightly skewing their overall shot totals.

The Sharks have outshot their first two opponents by a combined 69-50 while the Rangers have a 74-46 edge in shots, which includes holding the Blues to zero shots in the third period.

"I don't think we can play much better than we did in the third," Henrik Lundqvist said to Newsday after the Rangers outshot the Blues 15-0 in the final 20 minutes. "Obviously, they (the Blues) battened down, and waited for mistakes. It felt like we were going to tie the game, we had enough chances, (Blues goaltender Carter Hutton) just made some big saves."

If the Rangers want to avoid succumbing to a Sharks' onslaught, they'll need to play that same aggressive style to protect their weakened back end.

"We had the puck in their end most of the time, so that reduced the burden," Staal told the New York Post. "It can be tough going with five if you're defending a lot, but our mindset was to be aggressive and take the game to them. That helped."

Preview: Avalanche (1-0) at Penguins (2-0)

PITTSBURGH -- The Pittsburgh Penguins are 2-0-0 as they begin their defense of the Stanley Cup, and perhaps that shouldn't be a surprise.

If there's anything the Penguins know how to do - no matter the roster or the identity of the coach - it's how to follow up after winning a championship.

After beating the Detroit Red Wings to win the Stanley Cup in 2009, Pittsburgh started out 9-1-0 in 2009-10. When captain Mario Lemieux's Penguins began their quest for a third straight Cup in 1992-93, they opened up with 11 wins and two ties in their first 14 games.

The current-day Penguins go for their third straight win at the newly renamed PPG Paints Arena on Monday night when they face the Colorado Avalanche (1-0). The Avalanche debuted under new coach Jared Bednar by beating the Dallas Stars, 6-5, on Saturday behind Joe Colborne's three goals.

Colorado knows it has to stop getting off to the poor starts it experienced under former coach Patrick Roy over the previous two seasons. The Avalanche lost six of their first eight last season and eight of their first 10 in 2014-15, which forced them to try to play catch-up the rest of both seasons - and they never caught up.

Bednar liked how his team responded to a 2-0 deficit with five consecutive goals, though he wasn't happy that the 5-2 lead later became only a 5-4 margin.

"I liked the way we played offensively. I thought we were skating and on our toes, creating chances. (But) I think we have to get better defensively," Bednar said. "We made some mistakes defensively up ice that gave them some numbers and gave them some scoring chances early in the game, and also a bit later."

Bednar is learning how to coach in the NHL on the fly - literally. He wasn't named the head coach until Aug. 25 following Roy's unexpected resignation. Bednar barely had two weeks to get ready for training camp and to learn the league.

Penguins coach Mike Sullivan can relate to that. Like Bednar, who won titles in the American Hockey League and ECHL, he was coaching in the minors last season when he was hired Dec. 12 to replace Mike Johnston in Pittsburgh.

That's why Sullivan said, more than 10 months later, the Penguins still are learning his style, even after winning the Stanley Cup with a half dozen of his former Wilkes-Barre/Scranton players in their room.

"What I like about this group is, over time, we have a better understanding of how to play in one-goal games," Sullivan said following a 3-2 win over the Anaheim Ducks on Saturday night. "We're still trying to score, still trying to play with speed, but I think our guys are making good decisions and forcing our opponents to play that 200-foot game. We're hard to play against in that regard. I think that's when our team is at its best. Our guys have bought in."

Marc-Andre Fleury is proving to be hard to play against, too. After barely playing since late March, when he sustained his second concussion of the season, Fleury has stopped 73 of 77 shots and posted a 1.92 goals-against average.

"It's been fun," said Fleury, who lost his starting job to the currently injured Matt Murray just before the playoffs began. "I wanted those games in the preseason (to get accustomed to playing again). I wasn't as sharp as I'd like to be. There still are things I want to get better at, but not right now. I feel better now than I did at camp."

Colborne, a former University of Denver player, is feeling better the longer he gets accustomed to being with the Avalanche, He had 19 goals while playing for Calgary last season.

Colborne and Real Cloutier (1979) are the only players in franchise history to get a hat trick in their first game with the team.

"The three goals, (that's) probably the way I'm going to score most of them, and I'm just fine with that," Colborne said. "It's my job and something I take pride in, going to those tough areas and making them try to drag me down, draw some penalties and hopefully bury some."

The Penguins, who had the day off Sunday as they play three games in four nights, already are making some adjustments as they compete without captain Sidney Crosby (concussion).

On Saturday, Sullivan moved forward Conor Sheary to right wing on Matt Cullen's wing, with Chris Kunitz on the left. Right wing Patric Hornqvist shifted to center Evgeni Malkin's line so Scott Wilson could play on his natural left side. Sheary responded with a goal and a number of scoring opportunities.

"You're kind of hitting yourself for not burying a couple of those," Sheary said. "But it's a good sign when you're getting a lot of chances."

Bednar will switch goalies Monday, from Semyon Varlamov to backup Calvin Pickard, who stopped 47 of 48 shots in 1-0 Avalanche overtime loss in Pittsburgh on Dec. 18, 2014. Varlamov will start Tuesday against his former team, the Washington Capitals.

The Penguins were 2-0 against Colorado last season, winning 4-3 on Nov. 19 in Pittsburgh and 4-2 at Colorado on Dec. 9, Johnston's last victory as coach.

Preview: Senators (2-0) at Red Wings (0-2)

DETROIT -- The Ottawa Senators and Detroit Red Wings began the 2016-17 NHL season going in opposite directions.

The teams are scheduled to meet at 7:30 p.m., Monday at Joe Louis Arena in Detroit's season home opener.

Ottawa is 2-0-0 after defeating the Toronto Maple Leafs 5-4 in overtime on Wednesday night in its opener and a 4-3 shootout win over the Montreal Canadiens Saturday night, while the Red Wings are 0-2-0 after a 6-4 loss to the Tampa Bay Lightning on Thursday night and dropping a 4-1 decision to the Florida Panthers Saturday night.

"Early in the season, it's good to grow and learn from different things ...," Senators forward Ryan Dzingel told the Ottawa Sun after Saturday night's game. "We grew as a team. Both wins helped us out a lot."

Dzingel had a goal and an assist in the game, in which defenseman Erik Karlsson and center Kyle Turris scored in the shootout.

It will be the Senators first road game of the season.

It is the first time that Detroit has lost its first two games of the season since 2009.

The Red Wings defensive corps was an issue last season, when they reached the playoffs for the 25th consecutive season -- the longest current streak in the NHL -- and were eliminated in the first round of the NHL playoffs by the Tampa Lightning in five games, and it continued to be an issue in the first two games of the 2016-17 season.

"I think we got some guys on the back end that have to play better," Detroit coach Jeff Blashill told mlive.com after Saturday night's game.

The Red Wings have already surrendered numerous breakaways and odd-man rushes. They fell behind 1-0, 1:10 into the game Saturday night and trailed 2-0 midway through the first period.

"We can't keep giving up free opportunities like that. It's nonsensical," Blashill said. "That put us on our heels. I thought then we played to not give up chances and when you do that you're tentative and we weren't quick enough on pucks. Their second guy beat our second guy to too many pucks, so we didn't spend any time in their zone."

Blashill switched his top two defense pairs after the season-opening 6-4 loss to Tampa Bay on Thursday night.

Danny Dekeyser played with Alexey Marchenko in the opener but was paired with Mike Green Saturday night.

Marchenko skated with Brendan Smith against Florida. The third pair of Jonathan Ericsson and Xavier Ouellet was intact for both games.

"I think Johnathan Ericsson has been very good in two games," Blashill said. "I think Xavier Ouellet has been very good in two games. I think Mike Green for large portions has been good. But as a group we got to do better."

This season is Detroit's last at Joe Louis Arena. The team will move to the Little Caesars Arena, which is under construction, to begin the 2017-18 season.

WINNIPEG, Manitoba -- The Boston Bruins have had enough of rookie sensations, so Patrik Laine had best be on his toes.

Boston fell to the Toronto Maple Leafs 4-1 Saturday night, when Mitch Marner, last year's Canadian junior player of the year, scored the winner. Now the veteran-laded Bruins want to remind the Winnipeg Jets on Monday that there is a reason why the most common adjectives used to describe them are "big" and "bad."

The only saving grace for the Bruins from the road loss was they kept Toronto's Auston Matthews, who scored a record four goals in his first NHL game, off the score sheet. But when there is more than one roadrunner on a team, shutting down the fastest one doesn't guarantee victory.

"We told our guys they would be fast," Bruins coach Claude Julien told the Boston Globe, "and that they would have to fight to get to those positions. That's where our team didn't do a good enough job. A few times we had opportunities we didn't stop in front of the net. We skated by. (Brad) Marchand at the end, if he puts on the brakes, he gets a goal there on a (David) Pastrnak pass. But he did a fly-by there."

The Jets, like the Bruins, come into their third game of the season with a record of 1-1-0.

Winnipeg is grasping for answers to what went wrong Saturday night in St. Paul, Minn., when the Jets jumped out to a 2-0, first-period lead only to give up the next four goals en route to a 4-3 loss to the Minnesota Wild. Perhaps the most frustrating part for Jets coach Paul Maurice was the fact his troops mustered a whopping eight shots on net during the last two periods, and one of those came from center ice.

"All things open up after chaos gets created, and we didn't create enough chaos in the offensive zone to create some of the plays we were looking for," Maurice said.

Laine, the Jets' rookie sensation who was selected No. 2 in last spring's draft behind Matthews, had a goal and an assist in Winnipeg's 5-4 opening-night victory over the Carolina Hurricanes on Thursday. However, he was held pointless against the Wild, despite spending most of the night on the top line with winger Blake Wheeler and center Mark Scheifele.

The ever-impatient Jets fans, who have used Ondrej Pavelec as their punching bag for the past four years, are calling for the recall of the recently demoted goalie after Connor Hellebuyck and Michael Hutchinson each gave up four goals in his first starts of the season.

They also were crying foul after Maurice banished winger Joel Armia and defenseman Ben Chiarot to the press box against the Wild and inserted and right winger Chris Thorburn and rearguard Mark Stuart in their place. Center Alex Burmistrov also dressed for his first game of the year against the Wild, filling in for Bryan Little, who is out indefinitely after sustaining a lower-body injury against Carolina on Thursday.

PITTSBURGH (AP) Gabriel Landeskog redirected a shot by Nathan MacKinnon past Marc-Andre Fleury 22 seconds into overtime to lift Colorado by Pittsburgh 4-3 on Monday night.

Landeskog tied the game with 6:32 left in regulation with a power-play goal and his second of the night handed the defending Stanley Cup champions their first loss of the season.

Jarome Iginla and Patrick Wiercioch also scored for the Avalanche, who never led until Landeskog's game-winner. MacKinnon had two assists and Calvin Pickard stopped 28 shots for Colorado.

Matt Cullen had a goal and an assist for the Penguins while Phil Kessel and Trevor Daley also scored. Fleury made 27 saves.

RANGERS 7, SHARKS 4

NEW YORK (AP) - For the third straight game, Chris Kreider had a goal and an assist for New York.

Kreider, who signed a four-year, $18.5 million contract on July 22, has three goals and three assists in New York's first three games. According to the team, he is the first Ranger since Brian Leetch in 1992-93 to tally six points in New York's first three games. He also became the first New York forward to record six points in three games to start a season since Bernie Nicholls and Darren Turcotte in 1990-91.

Marc Staal, Rick Nash, Kevin Hayes, rookie Jimmy Vesey, Mats Zuccarello and Michael Grabner also scored for the Rangers, who have won two of their first three games this season.

Martin Jones finished with 22 saves for San Jose.

New York goaltender Antti Raanta made 26 saves on 30 shots.

RED WINGS 5, SENATORS 1

DETROIT (AP) - Mike Green scored three times for his first hat trick and Darren Helm had two goals to help Detroit win in their last home opener at Joe Louis Arena.

Green scored twice in the first period and his third goal restored a three-goal lead with 6:36 left in the game. Helm scored on a breakaway in between Green's goals in the first period and added a second goal with 2:56 left in the third.

Ryan Dzingel's short-handed goal midway through the second period pulled the Senators within two goals.

Detroit's Petr Mrazek made 13 of his 31 saves in the second period.

Andrew Hammond stopped 20 shots in his first start of the season for Ottawa.

The Red Wings are leaving the venue they have called home since the 1979-80 season next year for a new arena nearby.

BRUINS 4, JETS 1

WINNIPEG, Manitoba (AP) - David Pastrnak scored his team-leading fourth goal of the season for Boston.

The 20-year-old Pastrnak extended his point streak to three games while suiting up in his 100th career game.

Winnipeg captain Blake Wheeler opened the scoring 10 minutes into the game.

Boston trailed for all of 19 seconds, however, as Dominic Moore tied things up at 10:19 of the first period.

Rookie Brandon Carlo's first career goal added insurance for the Bruins with 1:59 remaining in the third period and Zdeno Chara scored an empty-netter inside the final minute.

Boston's Tuukka Rask turned away 34 of 35 shots, while Winnipeg's Connor Hellebuyck stopped 21 of 24.

Hurricane Warning

Bettors have the North Carolina State Fair to thank for the road odyssey for the Carolina Hurricanes to start each and every National Hockey League regular season. The parking lot for PNC Arena fills up for the nearby state fair, causing the Hurricanes to vacate their Raleigh home and hit the road for a week or two. While the young Hurricanes have been productive early in games, their failures in the third period and overtime so far in stops in Winnipeg and Vancouver have been as painful as trying to choke down a Krispy Kreme bacon double cheeseburger or deep-fried Twinkie from the fair. The Hurricanes blew a 4-1 lead with 14 minutes to go in Winnipeg on opening night, eventually falling 5-4 in OT. Their game in Vancouver was nearly a carbon copy, blowing a 3-0 lead late, as the Canucks forced OT and eventually won it 4-3.

Where's the Deef?

The Edmonton Oilers have been involved in three games to start the season with scores resembling All-Star Game results. The Oil snuffed out the Flames 7-4 to christen their new arena, Rogers Place, in successful fashion. In the second end of the home-and-home, the offense was dialed back slightly, as Edmonton topped Calgary by a 5-3 count. The Buffalo Sabres dealt the young Oilers their first setback in their new home, dropping them 6-2 Sunday night. So far the total for each Edmonton game has been set at 5.5 goals, but their games have seen an average of 9.0 goals per contest. The Oilers have averaged 4.7 GPG through the first three outings while the defense/goaltending has coughed up 4.3 GPG. Until the Oilers show signs of slowing down the opposition, or Vegas adjusts their total to 6, keep banging the 'over' in Edmonton games.

Looking Ahead

Tuesday, Oct. 18

The Pittsburgh Penguins and Montreal Canadiens tangle at Bell Centre. The Penguins have won four of their past five trips to Montreal, with the Pens skating away with wins in 11 of the past 16 meetings overall. The road team has cashed in six of the past seven in this series. ... The Florida Panthers have dominated the Sunshine State rivalry against the Tampa Bay Lightning lately, winning four of the past five meetings, but they're just 2-5 in their past seven trips to the Ice Palace. There are usually plenty of goals in this rivalry, with the 'over' 11-3 in the past 14 in Tampa, and 10-4 in the past 14 overall. ... The 'under' is 19-4-4 in the past 27 in Minnesota between the Kings and Wild, and the 'under' is 31-12-8 in the past 51 overall.

Wednesday, Oct. 19

The Detroit Red Wings invade Madison Square Garden to battle the New York Rangers, one of just two games on the NHL slate. Dating back to last season the Wings have dropped 18 of their past 23 games away from home. Conversely, the Blueshirts have won 50 of their past 68 against a team with an overall winning percentage under .400. While the Rangers look good for a wager, you can certainly expect to eat a lot of chalk. Detroit has dropped six straight at MSG, and the home team is 14-3 in the past 17 in this series. Total bettors might also be interested in the fact the 'under' is 8-1-3 in the past 12 meetings between these Original Six teams, and 5-1-1 in the past seven at MSG.

Thursday, Oct. 20

The Kings and Stars tangle in Big D Thursday night. Los Angeles won its only trip to Dallas last season, winning 5-2 back on March 15, and they're a respectable 6-4-1 in their past 11 skates in the Heart of Texas. ... The Hurricanes skate in the Saddledome to try and extinguish the Flames. It's a tall order for Carolina, as they're 0-6-1 in their past seven trips to Calgary, last winning Dec. 12, 2002. The Hurricanes have been outscored 26-9 during the span, too, and in one of those games they lit the lamp six times. So it's been a real house of horrors for them over the years.
